ADVERTISING

2018

2018 advertising on sale now! We have great NEWS, it has been agreed that we can now offer advertising in the IMEX Frankfurt preview (for information see page 5). The Preview will be posted with visitor and hosted buyer badges before the show, it will also be emailed in digital format to the full IMEX database. This means you will get into buyers and visitors minds at the moment they receive their badge and to all those who have entered the database over the years, who may not be able to visit the show this year, or are yet to register. The Digital Show Preview will be sent out to over 50,000 potential visitors, hosted buyers and all exhibitors in April 2018, on top of the printed and posted edition with the badges mentioned above. The Preview will cover all important information that visitors need for IMEX 2018 and will be packed with video content too. Advertisers will once again have the opportunity to add video content to their advertisements for maximum impact. We are also offering a 10% early bird discount in September, for all advertising booked and paid for before October. So for those advertisers who have already planned their budgets, there are big savings to be made.

sanfrancisco.travel Australia’s business events industry has a reputation for delivering successful events that consistently exceed expectations. To ensure that Australia’s cities and venues remain competitive on the international stage, massive investment has been dedicated from state governments into capital cities across the country. Thousands of new hotel rooms are being built and additional flight routes will be opened thanks to renewed airline partnerships. Key infrastructure developments underway include the AU$1 billion development of ICC Sydney scheduled to open this December. The convention centre will be capable of holding four fully separate concurrent events of more than 12,000 delegates and will have a total exhibition capacity of 40,000 sq. m. The surrounding Darling

Harbour will feature a new 600-room hotel by 2017 and new retail and entertainment spaces. In Melbourne the AU$210 million start of stage two of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre will significantly increase the footprint by 20,000 sq. m. In Brisbane proposals have been put forward for the development of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane, an iconic world-class resort and entertainment precinct that will feature five hotels, including RitzCarlton, which will bring over 1,110 new premium hotel rooms to the city centre. A pedestrian bridge will provide access to South Bank, making the development within walking distance of the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Another world-class year for London 2015 was a great year for London. Hailed the world’s number one tourist destination by Mastercard’s Global Destinations Cities Index, London welcomed major conferences and events including London Technology Week, Advertising Week Europe (both returning this year) and the European Society of Cardiology’s most successful congress to date. Between 2009 and 2014, London saw an increase of more than 28% in business visits, with 3.3 million in 2014, proving the city more attractive than ever for

event professionals. 2016 is set to be another momentous year. Landmark openings to add to the existing 1,535 hotels in London include two Park Plaza hotels in Park Royal and Waterloo, the Four Seasons Hotel at Ten Trinity Square and the Nobu Hotel Shoreditch London. The city will welcome groundbreaking events, such as the AI Summit and New Scientist Live, along with major congresses, including the European Respiratory Society and the European League Against Rheumatism.

Celebrations and events are planned to mark the 40th anniversary of punk, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the Queen’s 90th birthday. Harry Potter will return to London for new adventures on the stage and the first-ever International Rolling Stones’ exhibition will open. The stage is set for another world-class year.

Event organisers encouraged to let their creative side show ESS than 40% of event planners are creative thinkers despite 71% believing they have a creative approach to their work, according to new research by London & Partners in partnership with supplier directory MICEBOOK.com. The research, which was developed to mark the launch of the London Convention Bureau’s Love the Event, Love the Experience campaign, also reveals that while 53% of event professionals feel under pressure to deliver innovative events, less than a third of respondents say that risk-taking is encouraged by their organisation. Only one third said that they were allowed free time to think, and only 32 per cent agreed that creative excellence is rewarded by their organisations. More than 400 event planners were invited to find out whether planning of events is dominated by rational leftbrained or emotional right-brained thinkers. With under 40% of respondents shown to be right-brain thinkers, the study highlights that global event planners must push themselves to embed creativity within their workplaces in order to deliver bold, dynamic events. Tracy Halliwell, director of business tourism and major events at London & Partners, said: “Creativity and innovation are growing ever more important as clients demand event activations that set them apart from their competitors and deliver enduring memories for consumers. The experience itself is now what drives the event, but it’s only by combining pioneering ideas with concrete solutions that we can truly surprise and delight.” Respondents were tested using a 30-Second Brain Test devised by agency Sommer+Sommer. Its chief creative officer, Leonard Sommer, said: “An event without an extraordinary experience certainly has less impact as memory systems in the brain are not fully activated. To ensure an event leaves a lasting brand impression, event planners need to incorporate unique emotional experiences, both to make them memorable and to help overarching messages resonate”. Two-thirds of those surveyed blamed lack of time for ham-

pering creativity, with another 53 per cent blaming budget limitations. However, three-quarters of those surveyed believe that their team members are free to deliver creative ideas. Chetan Shah, founder and CEO of MICEBOOK.com, said: “Whilst time-constraints and restricted budgets can sometimes hinder creativity, a balance is always needed between the creative and the logical. Great teams bring together a mix of personalities, approaches to work and creative or logical attributes.”

ELCOME to IMEX in Frankfurt 2017. The elements are in place for the industry to do business, to make valuable connections and to make the most of their experience this week. The hall is set with inspiring new destinations, venues, hotels and technology suppliers; the education schedule is packed with more innovative sessions than ever and industry colleagues are arriving from all over the world to share experiences at the many networking events this week. “We’ve focussed our resources on creating enhancements throughout the show so that everyone will feel ‘I’ve had a great experience here this week’ whatever their needs and reasons for coming to the show,” said Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group. More than 41 new stands and hundreds of new exhibitors from all areas of the world and the industry offer buyers the chance to connect with many potential new suppliers, including Moldova Tourism, Meet Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Kyoto Convention Bureau and many new technology suppliers. It all adds up to the largest IMEX to date. With almost 3,500 companies exhibiting representing more than 150 countries, there are plenty of opportunities to make new connections – and with the show now closing at 18:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday, there is more time to meet exhibitors and attend networking or educational events. The continued investment in IMEX by all sectors reflects the mindset of the industry. It spotlights resilience to extraordinary world issues, and a quietly confident, cautiously positive attitude within an industry that is well-placed for solid, long-term growth. At this morning’s Opening Ceremony, Professor Greg Clark CBE, a world renowned

EduMonday IMEX has further developed its education programme, now the biggest ever with over 200 sessions to match every need. This year’s major innovation was yesterday’s EduMonday, a full day of learning opportunities in both English and

German providing insights into event design, future trends and hot new technologies. The PCMA Business School featured Tremaine du Preez leading a workshop on How to Make Better Decisions. At Exclusively Corporate @IMEX, a large group of corporate event planners enjoyed a new programme streamed to meet their needs while association professionals from around the world took part in Association Day, and networking at Association Evening before coming to the exhibition today. The education continues throughout the show at the Inspiration Hub, with experts exploring ten different tracks. CMP/CEU and

ILEA credits can also be accrued at many sessions. New research and training certifications This year a theme, Purposeful Meetings, is running throughout the show. Janet Sperstad of Madison College, USA will be delivering a new keynote tomorrow as part of the education programme and will reveal the first findings of a fascinating major piece of research. Be Well at IMEX will help everyone stay healthy, with the Be Well Lounge, yoga and meditation sessions and new White Space area offering places to relax. The 5km #IMEXrun is again taking place along the river Main early tomorrow morning.

A new initiative this year is Waste Watcher. Partnering with local organisation ShoutOutLoud, the IMEX team is reducing waste by providing new opportunities for everyone to re-use and recycle an extensive range of materials. IMEX is also saving 2.7 tons of paper by not producing a printed Show Catalogue. Full information about exhibitors and education sessions is available from the new Show Planner, from the Show App and via the website. Combine all this with more than 200 networking opportunities including SITE Nite Europe, cim-clubbing and the IMEX Gala Dinner and there are all the elements here for a great experience. Here’s to a successful week.

HE Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is launching its first international campaign to market the country as a destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions, at IMEX. Marketing activity by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage in association with the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau will highlight that more than 600 first class hotels, convention and exhibition facilities are available across the country.

The marketing initiative is in line with Vision 2030, announced in April 2016, setting out economic and social policies designed to move the Kingdom’s economy away from its dependence on oil. Hosting business events is one of the focal points of the reforms, along with leisure and religious tourism, to generate revenue and employment. Under the National Transformation Plan, the centrepiece of Vision 2030, the Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage (SCTH) is investing almost SAR 26 billion (€6.3 billion) in initiatives. Established nearly four years ago, the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau was created with a mandate to develop the meetings industry. Tariq A. Al-Essa, executive director of the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau, said: “As the worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events, IMEX is the perfect place for us to meet thousands of influential event and meetings buyers face-to-face and to show them the opportunities in Saudi Arabia and many superb facilities that we could offer them.” Stand D600 secb.gov.sa

Sponsor’s editorial, in all 3 days Daily 1 Industry must demonstrate resilience in testing times Recent world events have threatened order and economic stability. The meetings industry must remain resolute, says Joachim König, JMIC president

R

ECENT terrorist incidents are putting us all to the test, and the results will be of major consequence not simply in the immediate future but for the long-term survival of our industry. A quick look at the travel-related impacts of global incidents suggests that business travel, and particularly travel related to meetings and conventions, were both the most resilient and the first to recover from such setbacks. Certainly this was the case in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, where association meetings in particular were least affected in terms of both attendance and cancellations. In fact, a case can be made that it was the continued support from this sector that kept the industry alive during what was a very challenging time. But the recent terrorist incidents represent an even greater challenge in that they not only invoke the fear factor but will inevitably result

in even greater security measures and potentially even a weakening of cross-border agreements that have facilitated travel in recent years. Together, these will reduce travel inclinations at a time when industry recovery was only just beginning to gain traction. But as has been pointed out so many times before, to succumb to the threat simply delivers the kinds of wins those responsible are hoping for – the disruption of global exchanges and

economic prosperity that have made the world a better and more tolerant place. And as the clear leaders in this respect for so many years, this is a threat we must do all we can to resist. So far, anecdotal evidence suggests the pattern has held: even in those areas hardest hit, there have been relatively few event cancellations even as leisure tourism has suffered significant impacts. Once again, the desire to meet has outweighed the desire of others to keep that from happening. Let’s keep it up. We have a legacy of leadership in driving travel recovery and now more than ever that needs to be maintained.

ONSULTANTS are used in just about every industry. Even presidential candidates rely on the expertise of consultants to help them navigate the tricky waters of an election cycle. Candidates, managers, and organisations rely on consultants because they are experts in their field. In today’s meetings industry, planners are being asked to do more with less, while at the same time being asked to deliver a unique meeting experience for their attendees and satisfy their meeting stakeholders. Convention and visitors bureau (CVBs) are there to help, so why not let destination experts take some of the strain of meetings planning. Here are seven ways CVBs offer consultative advice to meeting planners; 1. A fresh perspective: Want to step outside the ordinary and offer events that are unique? The CVB consultant can provide a fresh perspective on how to incorporate the unique aspects of the location into a programme.

2. Expertise and specialised knowledge: You don’t need to spend time figuring out a destination’s logistics, hotel package, or transportation options. CVBs have specialised knowledge in planning an effective programme and staying on budget. 3. Best practices and proven methodology: CVB consultants work with planners of every size and type, from a ten-person board meeting to large citywide events. Let their proven methods and the best and most efficient ways of achieving your meetings objectives guide you. 4. Strategic partner: One of the most valuable services CVB consultants offer is their ability to listen, assess, and understand what meeting planners are trying to accomplish, and then match those goals to the right solution. 5. Analytical horsepower: The CVB is the key source in obtaining and sharing vital destination demand factors, historical occu-

pancy data, meeting history, and help to understand the overall economic value of their event. 6. Advocate and ally: As your ally and advocate in the destination, your CVB will promote the total value of a meeting to the community, leverage their community relationships, and help to solve any problems that may occur before and during a meeting. 7. Cost savings: These services provided by the CVB are free for planners to use. CVBs are funded primarily through hotel occupancy taxes and/or assessments from organisations vested in tourism. To connect with your CVB consultant and to take advantage of their free consultative advice in over 150 destinations, visit empowerMINT.com, the DMAI-powered personal meeting planning tool. empowermint.com

60 second guide: ICC Sydney What is it? The International Convention Centre Sydney is set to be Australia’s first and largest integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment centre when it opens in December of this year. Built on the former site of the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, the ICC has been three years in building and represents a €1billion investment. The ICC is one major part of an urban renewal project centred on Darling Harbour. The development will be a mix of business, residential and open space, that will reinvigorate this recreational centre of Sydney. What does it offer? ICC Sydney consists of three conjoined structures: ICC Sydney Theatre, ICC Sydney Exhibition Centre and ICC Sydney Convention Centre. It will have more than 70 meeting rooms, three theatres and two formal ballrooms. For meetings organisers, it will be capable of holding three entirely separate, self-sufficient, concurrent events in convention spaces for 2,500, 1,000 and 750 people. It will also include a flexible space of 2,500m² and the largest ballroom in Sydney for up to 2,000 people. The ICC Exhibition Centre and Entertainment Centre will include 35,000m² of exhibition space, which can be divided into smaller spaces.

Anything else? There’s a 5,000m² event deck, including a 1,000 m² lounge and bar area to soak up all that lovely Sydney sunshine. The venue is also promoting itself as somewhere that food really matters. Its Feed Your Performance philosophy acknowledges that the nutritional value of food is just as important as its provenance. The ICC aims to deliver ‘smart’ menus comprising fresh, seasonal and ethically sourced ingredients, expertly combined to drive physical and mental performance. Oh, and the 600-bed ICC Sydney Hotel is set to be the city’s largest 5-star hotel when it opens next year. The 35 storey structure will be a managed by Accor as a Sofitel hotel.

Who is going to be using it? The ICC has confirmed 35 exhibitions for 2017 with a further 30 under negotiation. Events have been secured with all of the major exhibition operators in Australia, including Reed Exhibitions, Diversified Communications Australia, Expertise Events, Australasian Gaming Expo and Boating Industry Association, which runs the iconic and much loved Sydney International Boat Show. 20 large international conventions have been secured for ICC Sydney, including the International Chamber of Commerce World Chambers Federation, 2017; World Chambers Congress, 2017, and Sibos, 2018.
