WELCOME TO 10-11 MAR 2017 SECC, GLASGOW It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the second edition of Language Show Scotland. The show is running once again in partnership with our friends at Scottish Government, Education Scotland and SCILT. Over the two days at the SEC we will see a gathering of thousands of language teachers, professionals and learners. This is a reflection of the fantastic work and passion being demonstrated across Scotland in the promotion of languages. The show will see 24 languages being taught and many more represented by our exhibitors, as well as over 75 different talks, seminars and performances over the two days. Bringing the community of multilinguists together from all over Scotland and beyond is a great way to reaffirm the progress which is being made. It is vital that Scotland continues along its path towards becoming a multilingual nation which in turns provides economic and social benefits. The 1+2 approach introduced by the Scottish Government is a wonderful start towards achieving these goals but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to the whole of the language community to ensure that these gains are supported and maintained. We advise you to make the most of your time at the event by attending some of our many informative CPD accredited seminars and talks across our features and seminar rooms. The show is lucky enough to have industry leaders from all over the UK joining us to inspire and educate. All of our seminars and talks are free to attend with timetables included in this show guide. For something a bit more fun, our Piazza and Language Taster Classroom have free content throughout the show and feature cultural performances and lessons. If you would like something a bit more in depth then 2hr Language Plus classes can be purchased from the registration area. WELCOME A Message from John Swinney MSP, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills As Cabinet Secretary for Education, I am in the very privileged position to be invited frequently to visit schools and to see the very best of what Scottish education has to offer. I have been impressed beyond my expectations by the young people that I meet – their creativity, resilience and ambition – and by the teachers whose day to day commitment and hard work make educational opportunities come to life. I am driven above all by the commitment to tackling and closing the attainment gap. That’s about education that is inspiring, of the highest quality and fully relevant to the world in which today’s young people will be living. In this context, I am delighted to see how the 1+2 language policy is developing positively throughout Scotland. Through learning languages, children and young people gain not only communication skills, but also an understanding of how others see the world. Young people today are growing up in a highly global, connected world, and it is right that from a young age we support and encourage them to embrace the opportunities that this presents. Positive attitudes start young and so I am always inspired to see friendships naturally forming between children from different backgrounds with different mother tongues. We are committed to making the most of children’s natural enthusiasm to communicate, building the expectation that language learning is a normal part of education from the start of primary school onwards throughout a broad general education. Curriculum for Excellence is all about breadth of opportunity as well as about the development of core skills. It is increasingly well understood that vital learning around literacy, numeracy and skills for life is developed not simply by sticking to narrow programmes of study. Competence and confidence flow from educational opportunities which are varied and broad, and which respond to young people’s interests and talents. Opportunities to gain skills in additional languages must be part of this breadth, especially as it is known that learning an additional language helps develop literacy skills in a person’s first language and supports cognitive development more widely. As young people move on from school education to further or higher education or into the world of work, language skills will serve them well. Employers seek applicants with languages, as these people tend to show flexibility and have awareness of the wider world, together with an understanding of how to live and work with people from different cultures and backgrounds. For all these reasons, our 2016 manifesto repeated the commitment we made in 2011 to language learning in Scotland’s schools. The policy is visionary, hugely ambitious and a significant change to the way we have, for too long, perceived language learning. It will take time and continued commitment to ensure that the change is a permanent one, and I know that leaders at all levels are essential in maintaining the vision and sustaining strategic development work to make it a reality. Never Mind Spoken Languages, Here's British Sign Language This seminar will be an opportuity to learn more about the BSL (Scotland) Act (2015) and its implications for teaching and learning for all. We will consider what my be included in future plans to implement the Act, including the possiblity of BSL teachers and deaf children working collaboratively to promote BSL as fun language learning option.
