Hello (585) families

It is with a heavy heart that we share that our very first “Ask Audrey” interviewee has left us. Madison Kait Bathelmes passed away on February 14, 2023. Madison was seven years old. She loved to dance and eat french fries and ice cream. Her favorite nurse was Sam, and her favorite movie was Harry Potter. We just love that Audrey Mead interviewed this sweet little girl about her brave fight against leukemia. Our greatest hope was that a year after that interview we would be able to write about Madison’s recovery. We

are grateful that Audrey gave us a small glimpse into Maddie’s life.

If you would like to donate life-saving blood or platelets in Madison’s honor you can give to Team Mighty for Madison through the American Red Cross. redcrossblood.org

Camp ready

Am I ready to send my child to overnight camp?

As the van pulled away, I wanted nothing more than to change my mind. I wanted to pull my kids back to me, bring them home, and keep them with me forever. Instead, I stood there watching them go, watching until the van was out of sight, watching just a few minutes longer as my eyes filled with the tears I had been holding back all morning. I didn’t want them to go as much as I wanted them to go.

Knowing when kids are ready for overnight camp feels concrete, even if there is a bit of a learning curve in the process.

- Do they want to go? Are they excited?

- Are they comfortable sleeping away from home?

Knowing when we as parents are ready for our kids to go to overnight camp is rarely even talked about.

While we can do all the research, find the perfect camp, and understand the amazing opportunities overnight camp gives our kids, there are things to consider before watching that van drive away.

How do I feel about it? Excited? Nervous? Ready? No matter how you feel, you will probably never be ready. That’s the reality of parenting kids as they grow up. There will always be a pull from somewhere deep inside of you that wants to hold on. Even when you know you need to let go. It isn’t easy for anyone but recognizing it helps.

Does it feel safe? The safety of your kids is always one of your top priorities. Sending them to overnight camp, for one night, one week, or a whole summer, is a big decision. Take time to learn about the camp. Find out about the people working with the kids. Questions about requirements for lifeguards and background checks are completely appropriate and reputable camps will not be offended by any of these. Understanding the camp, how it works, and the people responsible during that time will help you decide how comfortable you are entrusting them with your child.

What is the emergency plan? Part of protecting our kids means being aware of dangers. The idea of not being there if something goes wrong can be hard and can even hold parents back from sending kids to camp. From an injury to simple homesickness, think about how you would handle a situation if it arises. While it isn’t comfortable, understanding the camp protocols as well as how you would be available and get to your child is a helpful way to feel ready.

Am I excited about the opportunities they will have? If you are going to balance the struggle of letting them go, it is key to know why you are sending them in the first place. Will they be able to have tons of outdoor time to play? Will your science lover get to do experiments every day? Will your artist have a full week of creating? Knowing the benefits of the camp and how it will help your child grow, develop friendships, learn, and foster independence will help when you are missing them.

How will I know what’s happening?

Camps are full of ways to connect. While most don’t allow phone communication, many have fun ways to stay connected. Camps today have opportunities to send emails, text, or even see daily pictures of your child at camp. Know the ways you can stay aware of your child’s experience. It will help you feel connected each day.

If you are uncertain about these things, take some time to think about them. Explore different camp options like how far it is from your home and how many days they will go. If you are struggling, start closer to home or opt for shorter time frame. If you are feeling more confident, explore longer options or out-of-state possibilities. Sending kids with a sibling or friend is a great way to have some peace of mind and talking to families that have sent their kids to the camp you are considering will help you find out more than what they show on the website. See what makes you feel more comfortable and go from there.

While it is important to decide if your child is ready to go to camp, it is equally important to make sure you are comfortable sending them. Taking time to think about these questions will help you decide if you are ready to send your child to overnight camp.

Color your world

585kids.com | Spring 2023 21 JUST FOR KIDS

It’s a beautiful day for a walk!

Mindfulness while walking can help you find peace, joy, and creativity

Most of us walk toward a destination. What if it were different? What if we walked with the purpose of being fully in the moment? Your stroll could take you along a city sidewalk, a trail, a playground, or your own neighborhood. Wherever you go, pay attention and let all your senses engage. I don’t mean a hypervigilant forced walk but a mindful walk.

Taking time to be present in your surroundings can open a whole new world. Start mindful walking often and in different settings! Let’s talk about a walking activity that can provide a sensory experience for your whole family.

Spring is a perfect time for getting out, taking a walk, and putting all your senses to use. The fresh smells, blossoming plants, and new life all around can provide a much-needed pick me up after a 585 winter.

All you really need is imagination, your senses engaged, and a bit of focus. If you are inclined, add in a journal and cool writing tool.

Before getting out there, take a deep breath, clear your head, and do some mindful breathing. Remember: in through the nose, fill up that belly, and out through your lips like you are blowing out a candle. The whole point of this walk

is to really see what is around you. Open up—see, smell, touch, and listen! A pebble can reveal tinier stones and colors inside of it. Leaves on the ground will crunch and give off different smells. Imagine a piece of bark is a mountain and tiny creatures are crawling over it. Examine the texture, smell, and color (NOT taste!). REALLY notice! Something as simple as the tree you see every day in a neighbor’s yard will soon become a tangle of colors, shapes, and movement. The sidewalk below you will be more than pavement—it will feel differently as you notice the jagged edges. As you walk, try this. Pick up something that intrigues you. Never pick something from a living object (that includes the dog walking past you). Keep these items and create a collage or an ever-changing shadow box! Voila! A reminder to be present.

If writing is more your thing, journal all that you’ve experienced. Journaling can be done with pictures or words. You can list ideas that came to you during your stroll, create a poem, or draw a picture. Really focus on your overall experience. Mindful walking is so much more than seeing. So next time you head out the door, keep all your senses alive. Bring a friend, share the journey and the joy.

PARENT ’S CORNER

• Adults can take a mindful walk with their children, too. A nice, healthy stroll is about so much more than just getting in those ten thousand steps.

• After you do some of your own mindful breathing guide, your little ones to do the same before heading out.

• Children are very good at discovering all that is around them. If you’ve ever walked with a toddler, you know they can find wonder and

excitement in every step. Join them as they curiously explore the world around them.

• Ask your child what those sidewalk cracks would seem like to an ant trying to pass over. How is it a different perspective from their own or a giant’s?

• Be patient. There is no need to make this walk stressful. Allow your children to lead the way and enjoy this special time with them.

An environmentalist

Audrey is a curious eleven-year-old who wants to learn more about everything. She is searching for kids in the Rochester area who are doing big things. Today she interviews fourteen-year-old Noah Moretter. He has started his own recycling business. He is in the eighth

grade at Johanna Perrin Middle School in Fairport, and he has a younger brother named Aiden who is in sixth grade. He likes Italian food like spaghetti and watching Outer Banks on Netflix.

I heard that you really care about recycling. What got you interested in it?

I have been interested in recycling ever since I was three. I remember a garbage man coming to my house and I thought it was so cool. After that I waited for the garbage truck every day and I’ve continued to be passionate about the whole refuse industry ever since.

When did you decide to start your own recycling business?

I started it in 2020, right about when COVID started. I noticed that people around that time stopped recycling, and I was fascinated by that. I thought I could make a big difference. My aunt is a graphic designer and she helped me design a logo.

Tell me more about your business. I collect bottles and cans, and I recycle them at the Palmyra Recycling Center and Can Kings. I use some of

the money on my business costs like my website, logo, and business cards. And I save some of it for college. But every year I donate a big portion of the money I earned to a local charity.

How can someone become a customer?

They can visit noahsrecycling.weebly.com or contact me at noahsrecycling@gmail.com and sign up to be a customer. Then we set a time and day for your collection, and it’s free.

How much time do you spend on your business?

I usually spend 3–4 days a week on collecting, recycling, and keeping up with emails from customers. I also attend committee meetings like the sustainability committee in Fairport. I service around ten customers a week including some businesses that weren’t recycling previously.

Do you have any hobbies or secret talents?

I have a YouTube channel with over four thousand subscribers where I talk about waste and recycling.

Where do you see yourself in five or ten years?

I want to go to college for environmental science, and my dream has always been to be a CEO of a waste management company.

and then a fragmentary portion of the other one,” McIntosh says. “We took a little section out of there and we were able to look at the growth bands. We were able to say that he’s probably twenty years old or so.”

These mastodons’ teeth and bones were also used in determining their age before they died. The Bloomfield mastodon had a worn-out tooth with no roots and a fused back, which indicates that it was an older adult. McIntosh estimates the Farview mastodon to have been younger, while the Bloomfield mastodon was likely in his forties.

In this exhibit, both mastodons are displayed in glass cases for visitors to observe and learn from. Before their extinction, mastodons “ruled the forest” in herds, weighing as much as six tons (12,000 pounds) each.

“Starting about two million years ago they started showing up both in Alaska and as far south as Mexico. They came in by crossing the land bridge, possibly during some interglacial period,” McIntosh says. “Then about 10,000 years ago, they all just went extinct—but they weren’t the only ones.”

Although mastodons and many

other Ice-Age mammals went extinct around the same time, scientists can’t agree on what led to their demise. One theory suggests humans hunted them to extinction.

“There’s no doubt about it that there weren’t people here two million years ago. They weren’t here even 500,000 years ago. Is it just

a coincidence that all these large animals go extinct when people arrive or not?” McIntosh says.

What happened to the mastodons? No one really knows for sure. At RMSC’s dig site, you’ll be able to come up with your own theories, and perhaps crack the case yourself.

Meet Sailor

Eat, swim, and play. That is a typical day for Sailor, one of the North American river otters at the Seneca Park Zoo.

Sailor is sixteen years old. His exact birthday isn’t known because he was born in the wild, but it is still celebrated at the end of winter. He came to the Seneca Park Zoo when he was six years old in 2012 from Alligator Adventure Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina—a long trip! He and his friend Ashkii are the only otters at the Seneca Park Zoo.

North American river otters are found throughout Canada and the United States along rivers and near streams or lakes that are bordered by woods and wetlands.

Sailor was named in honor of another otter at the zoo who, unfortunately, passed away, called Admiral. He got his name for flipping onto a black rubber tub and paddling it like a boat captain or admiral. The zookeepers decided to continue the ship theme, and that’s how Sailor got his name.

Sailor gets three meals a day—fish for the morning and afternoon and ground meat for his third meal. North American river otters are piscivores. This means they primarily eat fish. They will also eat small mammals, reptiles, birds, and occasionally fruits and vegetables, too. In addition to his three meals, Sailor also gets plenty of snacks and

treats. This includes clams, scallops, shrimp, soft-shell crab, squid, and even hard-boiled eggs.

Two important features that help Sailor in his environment are his tail and double-fur coat. The North American river otter’s tail is very strong and muscular and almost a third of its body length! It acts like a rudder on a boat to help propel and steer in the water. Their double coat is made up of guard hairs on the outside that helps the soft undercoat stay dry and warm when they are in the cold water. It also traps air bubbles that you can see when Sailor swims underwater.

Some cool fun facts about these cute mammals are that they can dive up to sixty feet, swim up to twelve miles per hour, and hold their breath for up to four minutes! They also have a wide range of sounds they use to communicate like whistles, yelps, growls, screams, and even body posture; they sometimes stand on their hind legs on land.

The best time to visit Sailor is right when the zoo opens at 10 a.m. This is because North American river otters are crepuscular, which means they are more active at dusk and dawn or right when the sun sets and rises. No matter the time, though, Sailor can’t wait for you to stop by and visit him at the Seneca Park Zoo!

EASTER EGG HUNTS

What would Easter be without egg hunts? Luckily, we won’t need to find out in 2023, as there is no shortage of hunting events this year.

Starting in Batavia, Prairie Path Park’s lower field, behind Rotolo Middle School will host the city’s free Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 1 at 10 a.m. for ages two to eight. Bring a basket and say hello to the Easter Bunny while you’re there. For the local older kids, ages nine to twelve, a hunt will take place at dusk on the Mark Twain Trail on Friday, March 31 at 7:15 p.m. Tweens will bring a flashlight, and whoever finds the golden egg wins a prize! Tickets are $15, and registration is required at bataviaparks.org.

ALL ABOARD THE EASTER BUNNY TRAIN

Celebrate the start of spring with a mileand-a-half round-trip train ride through the grounds of the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush. The museum is hosting rides with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, April 8. Train rides will depart every thirty minutes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free cookies, juice and coloring books will be gifted to the kids who attend. There will also be refreshments available for purchase.

After the train ride, kids will enjoy an Easter egg hunt on the grounds, as well as a visit and photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny.

And of course, families will also be able to tour New York State’s largest collection of historic trains. In the past fifty years, the museum has preserved more than forty pieces of historic railroad equipment and built a demonstration railroad. The gift shop inside is stocked with souvenirs for all train lovers.

Tickets are $10–16. Children fouryears-old and younger ride free. rochestertrainrides.com

BRICKUNIVERSE ROCHESTER, A LEGO® FAN EXPO

Attendees will enjoy participating in the LEGO building zones, featuring handson activities and the chance for LEGO lovers to display their very own work of art at the event.

“Over the years, BrickUniverse has enjoyed supporting local LEGO communities and showcasing talented artists with a lifelong passion for LEGO bricks. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to help share their amazing works of art and passion with LEGO fans of all ages,” says Angela Beights, event organizer.

Beights has been bringing BrickUniverse to the public for the past nine years, featuring award-winning LEGO artists from around the country. Ethen Teeters, a LEGO artist from Orlando, Florida, will be debuting his gallery of lifesize LEGO mosaics at the two-day event in Rochester.

The Rochester LEGO User Group will also be participating in the event, with more than sixty tables showcasing their impressive LEGO creations. Tickets start at $16.45, and children three years old and younger are free. brickuniverseusa.com

A DAY OUT WITH THOMAS

Why not two train rides on one list? The Medina Railroad Museum will be hosting a twenty-five-minute train ride with a talking Thomas the Tank Engine on May 20, 21, 27 and 28. In addition to facetime with Thomas, this event includes a meet and greet with Sir Topham Hatt, controller of the railway.

Eat your vegetables! Stir fry dinners hit the spot

Ithink all parents are constantly trying to get our families (and ourselves) to eat more vegetables. A stir fry is a great way to incorporate veggies into a fast and easy dinner. I often struggle with replicating a tasty sauce or keeping the vegetables from getting too mushy. Keeping everything bite-sized means everyone can see what they are eating, and the quick cooking time in the recipe below means vegetables stay tender. The recipe is delicious and fast-—cooks in about twenty minutes—perfect for a busy weeknight.

Kung Pao Chicken and Veggies

Serves 5–6

INGREDIENTS

Salt and pepper

If you have a picky eater, they may just eat the rice or the chicken. It’s ok, just keep trying—they WILL eat a vegetable one day. You can easily substitute any vegetables that your family likes or whatever you have on hand. One time I added a can of water chestnuts for extra crunch! The chicken can also be swapped out for shrimp, beef, or tofu or chickpeas to make it vegetarian. Try it out—I think this will become a family favorite!

About 3 lbs. boneless skinless chicken thighs cut into bite-sized chunks

3–4 tablespoons olive oil

2/3 cup roasted cashews or peanuts

1 red bell pepper chopped into bite-sized pieces

1 medium zucchini chopped into bite sized pieces

2–3 cups broccoli florets

Sauce

1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce

1/2 cup water

3 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons hoisin sauce

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

1/4–1/2 teaspoon dried red pepper chili flakes—more or less depending on heat preference

Cornstarch slurry

2 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder

2–3 tablespoons water plus more as needed to thin out consistency of sauce

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add chicken, salt, and pepper. Cook chicken about 2–3 minutes on each side, until browned.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, water, honey, hoisin sauce, garlic, ginger, and red pepper chili flakes. Pour over chicken.

3. Add your vegetables to the chicken. Continue cooking until the vegetables are almost fork tender. (Add the broccoli and peppers a few minutes before the zucchini as they take longer to cook.)

4. Add the sauce and continue cooking until vegetables are tender.

5. Whisk together the cornstarch and water in a small bowl.

6. Add the cornstarch slurry to the wok and cook a few additional minutes until the sauce has thickened up.

7. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions and serve over rice or quinoa. For more heat, top with siracha, sambal olek, or your favorite chili paste.

BFFs no more Helping teens through friendship breakups

Friendships between teens can be fickle: one day they’re the best of friends; the next day one of them gives the other the cold shoulder. It’s hard when a former friend disappears from your life. How can parents help their teens through friendship breakups? Here’s what the experts suggest.

Let them express how they feel

The first thing parents should do is to let their teens express how they feel. Parenting coach and author Mercedes Samudio says that parents should create a safe space for their teens to experience the emotions that come with a breakup. “They’ll feel angry and hurt,” she says, “but if they know they have a safe space to explore all their feelings they’re more likely to share them with you.” If your teens feel comfortable sharing how they feel with you, they’re more likely to listen to your suggestions when they’re ready to move on and make new friends.

Be mindful about how you respond

Listen to your teens, but also be mindful of how you respond to what they’re telling you. “If you appear to be overly emotional about the situation,” says youth social worker Jessica Wein, “your child in the future may choose to withhold certain information as means to protect mom/dad from becoming upset.” Keep your emotions under control and listen in as nonjudgmental a way as you can, showing that you understand what they’re going through. The mere fact of knowing that you understand, says child psychologist Dr. Kennedy-Moore, “lightens the burden of big feelings for your child.”

Explain that friendship breakups are normal

Explain to your teens that friendship breakups and the emotional process they are going through are part of. “Remind your child that a friendship breakup isn’t a failure,” says social worker and author of several parenting books, Signe Whitson, “but rather a predictable (albeit painful) part of growing up.” Clinical psychologist Dr. Margaret DeLong adds that parents should emphasize that the end of a friendship doesn’t imply “that there’s something ‘wrong’ with your child or the other child or that it’s anyone’s fault.” Teens may not realize that they and their former friend have simply grown apart or that their former friend has developed new interests and is involved in activities that make them gravitate towards other people.

Encourage them to look for new friends

Encourage your teens to look for new friends and do it by casting as wide a net as possible, and by being open to meeting new people in the neighborhood, at school, and during extracurricular activities like clubs, sports teams, and youth groups. “Parents play an important role in making sure that their kids don’t put all of their nest eggs into a single peer group basket,” says Whitson, “but rather develop genuine relationships with multiple peers and all kinds of friendship groups.” Dr. DeLong agrees: “Help your child to develop relationships in a variety of settings. This way, when your child experiences the loss of a friendship, he or she will have other people to spend time with.”
