Sustainable New Year’s Resolutions Hard as it may be to resist, each year at this time I find myself composing a lengthy list of New Year’s resolutions (I call it my “goals list” to make it seem more doable).

As we ring in this New Year and new decade, I’ve taken a slightly different tack. My list still centers around simple behaviors I can do to improve my life, but this time the actions have the added benefit of helping me walk more gently on this earth.

Here’s a peek at my top goals for 2010: • I resolve to bike more frequently to work and for my local shopping trips, leaving the car parked more often. This not only will help me meet my fitness goals, but will conserve fuel.

• This year I will buy more goods locally. My family already purchases fresh produce and eggs from a neighboring farm, and buys meats, grains, breads, honey, and maple syrup from local producers, but there’s still so much more we can do to support our local producers and retailers.

• While I already buy certain products in bulk and bring canvas bags on shopping trips, I will endeavor to purchase goods that have no extra packaging, and will speak up to store and company officials when I see goods with excessive packaging.

• To save paper, I resolve to print fewer documents and to do more bill-paying and correspondence electronically (although greeting cards will still be handwritten).

• When I plan my garden and landscaping this spring, I will choose varieties that consume less water, and this year I will at long last install rain barrels for use in the garden.

• Finally, I will put my money where my mouth is and make more environmentally- and socially- responsible investment choices in my retirement and savings accounts. Emerging and growing markets for renewable energy and sustainable technologies can reap as much financial growth as traditional ones; it just takes the resolve to move the money.

The first positive thing about this particular New Year is that there’s no further need to discuss the economic debacle that was 2009—thankfully, it’s now one for the books. The question is, where do we go from here? For many of us, there is still a hangover effect and much work remains to be done before a comfort level can seep in. For others, this will be a year of landing and rebuilding. And for the very fortunate among us, what lies ahead is a year full of opportunities and the chance to pursue deals in all shapes and forms.

But the real news, for all of us, is that since we’ve made it this far, there’s really no reason why we can’t keep moving forward. What the next cycle of prosperity will look like no one can say for sure. But rest assured, we’ll know it when it happens. And it’ll happen. Of course, we’ll be falling back on the sentiments of the early 1990s, and accordingly, this year’s common business refrain might turn out to be, “God, please grant me one more recovery and I promise not to blow it.” There may not be much wisdom there, but maybe that isn’t what we need this year—not while we’ve still got hope and a whole lot of prayers.

The Art of Living Respectfully Stephanie Odegard’s hand-woven designs pay homage to the past and provide hope for the future of weaving communities.

S

ince the inception of her eponymous company, Stephanie Odegard has operated under the stance that a business should give back to the people and places that contribute to its success.

At the heart of Odegard Inc.’s operations is a kindness and global awareness that stems from its founder’s premise for creating the company: you can indeed create a beautiful product while paying fair wages, give back to the artisans and communities with whom you work, and make a profit. More than two decades later, Odegard’s rugs can be found at such notable locations as The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and Restaurant Daniel in New York City, and her ongoing mission serves as a positive example in the design industry.

The seed of her company was planted when Odegard was serving overseas, working with organizations such as the Peace Corps, the United Nations, and the World Bank, helping artisans in third-world countries create products that would appeal to a global audience. It was during her time in Nepal that the idea struck. “I loved the product and the people who were making it and it all came together in a rug,” Odegard says of her experience.

As such, Odegard is concerned with the threat of the breakdown of the system that keeps the centuries-old craft of hand-weaving rugs alive, stressing points such as stopping deforestation through the use of alternative fuel sources other than wood, education for all children, adult labor with fair wages, and overall sustainability. “The cycle will die,” she says.

“My work is to try to stop that.”

For Odegard, to perpetuate that way of life is also to be an activist for the proper treatment of workers, the elimination of child labor, and environmentally conscious operating practices in the facilities. One way she contributes is through her work with RugMark.

“We know from studies that child labor perpetuates poverty passing the use of child labor from generation to generation,” Odegard says. A longtime part of RugMark’s work has been to take children out of the factories and place them in schools.

“Now that our program is working, people can actually see the results,” Odegard says. “You can’t turn your back on this.”

RugMark recently updated the label it bestows upon rugs from factories that meet its standards to read GoodWeave, a change Odegard says was to incorporate the organization’s work beyond the elimination of child labor. “We’re working with the factories with regard to what goes into the soil and becoming more environmentally conscious in their practices,” she says. “We’re also working on labor standards in Nepal and for better conditions for workers.

“RugMark and GoodWeave are doing something here that changes the paradigm,” Odegard says. “We’re actually contributing to the future of these cultures.”

One of the ongoing challenges for companies like Odegard is to educate the public about the differences between products with high social and environmental standards and those without.

he or she needs “an awareness of the product,” Odegard says, “To understand and appreciate the wearability, the lasting quality, and original design.”

One way to be sure the message will resonate is by educating the next generation of designers—this is made possible by the Odegard Award for Excellence in Rug Design. The student design competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students and was created to show them that by combining modern design with traditional techniques, they can increase awareness of the ancient practice of hand-knotting rugs and contribute to its future while expanding their artistic possibilities. This year marks a departure of sorts for the competition, as there will be no computer-aided designs accepted: all submissions must be drawn by hand.

“I’m excited to see the progression,” says Odegard, who serves as one of the judges. “There has been a big change in the younger generation and it’s exciting. They have a bigger desire to see the world and do good. They are more globally aware.”

And global awareness and an appreciation for ancient and diverse cultures continue to inform Odegard’s own design direction. Her most recent introductions include collections inspired by the extensive textile collection at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe; Tibetan manuscript covers from the 12th to 15th centuries; dreamlike forests; and hand-woven Guatemalan textiles.

To keep her many collections as natural as possible, Odegard chooses vegetable dyes and chemical-free washes for her rugs when appropriate, but says chemical dyes can be chosen with an eye to the environment as well, as certain options are significantly safer than others.

“To be completely chemical free is a cost issue,” Odegard says, adding that it’s a cost most consumers are not yet willing to pay. She further notes that many consumers simply want the purity of color of chemical dyes provide. “You need several colors to make one color and with vegetable dyes you can see all the components and people don’t like it,” Odegard says.

According to her, the natural striation is amplified further by wool’s rich lanolin content.

That said, Odegard has had the opportunity to call in a third-party certifier for customers who have made special requests for rugs that are completely chemical free.

As she looks ahead, Odegard says she is happy to see business starting to return, and she is further pleased with the government’s allocation of significantly greater funding to expand the Peace Corps. This not only points to an economy on the mend, but to a new generation that will be not only globally aware, but globally active as well. n

A Lightbulb Moment The future of lighting is spelled L-E-D.

hether it’s to cut down on energy costs, live a greener lifestyle, divert trash from landfills, or preserve a star-filled sky, consumers needn’t underestimate the power of an energy-efficient lighting makeover.

The ability of lighting to transform the mood of a room is undeniable, while the method of meshing lighting with the tasks at hand in any given area is vital. Lighting designers refer to the technique of placing multiple light sources around a room in order to enhance its many roles as layering.

“It is vital that lighting make a space function and that the correct fixtures are selected to match the tasks,” says Karen Rowe, director of marketing for Urban Archaeology, a Manhattan-based lighting manufacturer.

Jody De Vine of Sea Gull Lighting uses the example of a kitchen to illustrate how layering lighting effectively improves both the look and functionality of a space. Food preparation and recipe reading call for under-cabinet lighting—a popular spot for recessed light-emitting diode (LED) sources—and decorative lighting like chandeliers over breakfast nooks provide light and style to other areas.

—David Silverstein, Lighting by Gregory “So many rooms are multi-function spaces, making it nearly impossible for ‘one’ light to successfully do it all,” says De Vine. “Another great element to all this layered lighting is the addition of controls— putting different sources on dimmer controls. Therefore, you can adjust the function and feel of a space.”

But just as lighting can change the look and feel of a home, it can have an even greater effect on your utility bill. The U.S. Department of Energy says newer lighting technologies can cut home energy costs 50 to 75 percent. And while experts acknowledge there is a time and place for halogen and incandescent applications, the industry has clearly embraced energy efficiency, resulting in stunning designs which don’t sacrifice style for savings.

LED technology continues to climb in popularity and functionality, and companies now make it a point to ensure their fixtures can accommodate the notorious squiggle of the compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb.

market,” says Kim Banks, public relations representative for Progress Lighting, which operates from a LEEDcertified corporate headquarters in South Carolina.

“Significant increases in efficacy (lumens per watt), warm white color consistency, and an exceptionally long lifeline—more than 25 times longer than incandescent and five times longer than CFL—make them viable alternatives to traditional light sources.” Additionally, Banks points out, LED does not contain mercury and emits no UV rays.

Experts agree LED still has some progress left to be made in its color and general utility. However, the selection gets better every year and there’s no doubting the technology’s current dominance in the marketplace.

The future of lighting can certainly be spelled L-E-D. “There are still issues with LED with color. It’s not as good as an incandescent or halogen lamp would be,” says David Silverstein, vice president of sales for distributor Lighting by Gregory, whose Bowery lighting showroom is the biggest of its kind in New York City. “But every year I see better and better LEDs… dimmable like regular lamps. LED will one day replace traditional lamps; the technology will improve over the next two to five years, and the difference will be virtually indistinguishable. It’s a matter of time and research.”

Lighting can also be sustainable in the materials it’s made of. Manufacturers like Urban Archaeology incorporate recycled materials into their fixtures, resulting in unique lighting sources which give new meaning to “one man’s treasure.”

Beyond energy efficiency and repurposing materials, another environmental movement has spread across the nation and into the Empire State—and while it has everything to do with lighting, it has little to do with energy but more with the light itself. The Dark Sky movement, a campaign to reduce light pollution, has traveled eastbound from the southwestern states and the Pacific coast. The lighting industry has responded; Sea Gull Lighting, for instance, offers more than a dozen products designed to meet the specifications of the Dark Sky initiative. [For more information on Dark Sky, see newyorkhousemagazine.com] The idea has caught on in the Northeast, but not yet at an impacting level, says lighting designer and LEED AP Michael Stiller. “We don’t want to just light up the exteriors of buildings anymore—we don’t want to throw a ton of extra light into the sky where it just bounces back,” says Stiller, who has offices in New York City and High Falls. “It is a concern—not one that many people are taking into account in the bigger community, but it’s being attended to slowly.”

The growing popularity of these new products and acts of environmentalism among home and building owners in New York—whether a neighborhood conforming to Dark Sky standards or a homeowner switching his or her incandescent bulbs to CFLs—is evidence that saving power is attractive and easy for anyone. Even the smallest act—like changing a lightbulb—can make a big difference. n

In the wake of the successful Cash Allowance Rebate System (CARS, or Cash for Clunkers), which took nearly 700 gas-guzzlers off the road and provided $2.87 billion in total rebates, New York State has set up a similar program for energy-inefficient appliances.

The month-long program, appropriately dubbed the Great Appliance Swap-Out, will begin in February 2010 during Presidents Week, and will offer attractive rebates for tradeins of older models for Energy Star-approved ones; $75 for refrigerators, $75 for washing machines, and $50 for freezers. In addition, you get extra money for each with existing recycling payouts. As part of a package deal, if you buy a new refrigerator, washing machine, and dishwasher, you get a $500 rebate ($555 with documented recycling).

Applicants will need to fill out a detailed form and send it to NYSERDA; however, forms will not be accepted before February 13, and there will be a 30-45 day window for rebates.

Now is definitely the time to start thinking about replacing your older appliances with newer, more efficient ones. The rebates are handsome and the energy savings is well worth it, because in order to be Energy Star approved, a product must be 30 percent more efficient than standard models. This equals savings of roughly $75 a year on energy bills, according to the Energy Star website.

Green financing options for homes may widen in New York with development of Municipal Funding Programs

Q:

Dear Paul, I read about new legislation passed in Albany which authorizes municipalities to sell bonds to fund programs that finance energy efficiency improvements to buildings.

The program is called Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE), and is said to eliminate upfront cost for energy improvements by allowing property owners to pay for improvements over time through increases in annual property taxes. This seems like a good idea since the tax increase is supposed to be less than the amount of money homeowners would save on yearly energy bills. It means it would be worth it for me to borrow money to upgrade my own energy systems. Please tell me more about this program. Who do I call to find out how to participate? —Emily, Accord

A:

Hello Emily, It will take time for these programs to trickle down to reality on local levels. Solar industry lobbyists who helped pass the Municipal Sustainable Energy Loan Program Legislation estimate that the program will be available no earlier than summer 2010. (Some municipalities might not even develop one). Credible sources reported that municipal programs might have to be tied to federal funding or have federal guarantees for the bonds that finance the program. Otherwise, municipal costs for raising money via bonds and subsequent interest rates on loans offered to homeowners will not be attractive enough for PACE programs to really work.

To get to the bottom of this I spoke with Dorian Dale, energy director and sustainability director for the Town of Babylon on Long Island. Babylon is way ahead of the curve on creating local financing mechanisms to fund energy efficiency and renewable energy systems for homeowners. Babylon’s Long Island Green Homes (ligreenhomes.com) pilot program enabled green home retrofits by using 3 percent loans from town coffers—money from a reserve funds part of a town waste management program. Dale said about PACE funding: “This legislation is useful but without federal loan guarantees it’s not practical. Federal loan guarantees will make interest rates lower and bring costs down.”

Hopefully more towns in New York will become as proactive as Babylon in helping residents green their homes without needing federal funding. The idea of PACE is great, but if it comes at too slow a pace, why wait? NYSERDA has a loan program in which homeowners can borrow up to $20K at low interest to do what PACE funding will do, if and when it even comes to your town. Talk to local lenders who might finance renewable energy systems or energy related home improvements that show you lowering monthly energy costs. There are also rebates and tax benefits for everything related to saving energy. Now has never been a better time to make these important improvements to your house. • The Greenward Ridge Vent System by Energy Alternatives, LLC, basically turns your whole roof into an energy source. It captures heat escaping from your roof attic and uses it in a solar thermal water heat system. Thus the heat you normally have to try and get rid of ends up as a valuable energy source.

• Roof tiles being developed by MIT students called Thermeleon change color to reduce energy consumption just as a chameleon changes color. In summer Thermeleon tiles turn white and reflect 80 percent of sunlight hitting them, reducing the need for air conditioning. The GREEN Team organized community volunteers and local businesses to weatherize an Albany home on a wintry afternoon. by alyssa jung; photographs by garret lown

O

ld fashioned barn raisings were community events where people got together to build a barn in a day. Music, food, and overall fun usually accompanied the work and more than anything, the community came together to help someone in need. A newly formed activist group, the GREEN Team, has brought that concept back by partnering with local businesses and nonprofit groups to weatherize a historic home in Albany on a wintry day in December.

The home on South Ferry Street wasn’t just any house in historic downtown’s rowhouse area—built in 1815, vacant for nearly a decade, and complete with four stories of narrow, creaky staircases, it now houses residents who participate in the Altamont Program, a part of Father Peter Young’s organization that houses and guides people down on their luck. Veterans, the homeless, and people struggling with addiction can receive a warm place to stay and educational and vocational training at 90 locations around the state, before they’re re-launched into society. The GREEN Team, which stands for Getting Residents Energy Efficient Now, partnered with the Altamont Program to help create an in-house green training academy that seeks to produce self-sufficient taxpayers who can get a job in the green field.

“We want to provide a job and give someone a dignity paycheck. They’re trained to be a building analyst specialist and if their academia doesn’t suit that need, they can get a job in insulation or manufacturing and production of green products,” says Bill Balfe, the Altamont Program’s COO and director of green jobs.

“This academy has all the components and [pieces] of the pie fitting together and it’s working out well—we’ve already found about 12 jobs through green training.

With close to 50 volunteers, a work crew from Lowe’s, and thousands of dollars of materials donated by Lowe’s, the work was finished in about four hours and is projected to reduce the building’s energy costs by more than $4,000.

Balfe says the green training academy goes hand in hand with the philosophy of the Altamont Program and Father Young’s mission.

“The three-legged stool—housing, industries, and treatment. You give them treatment for addiction and treatment for services, then give them a clean, sober place to live, which is what this is,” Balfe says.

He adds that by hosting the barn raising he’s expanding what the academy teaches to the community,

which was GREEN Team’s founder Jim Devine’s mission all along.

“By forming the GREEN Team group we’ve got a bunch of organizations coming together to build a team and a process that can be easily replicated,” says Devine, adding that GREEN Team has a website, Twitter account, and newsletter. “We’re going to give all the information and building blocks necessary to do the same thing in another town, city, or region; all the ‘how tos’ made available to everyone around the State of New York.”

This barn raising was the group’s first weatherization project and the work being done would have taken a work crew nearly a week or two to complete, Devine says. With close to 50 volunteers, a work crew from Lowe’s, and thousands of dollars of materials donated

by Lowe’s, the work was finished in about four hours.

Energy Management Solutions provides energyefficient weatherization techniques to clients across the state. Mike Bennett, an energy auditor and company official, laid out just what the energy savings from this

project would be—$4,183 a year, representing nearly 35 percent of the building’s energy costs.

Balfe said roughly $12,000 is spent to heat the four-story house for an entire year. Virtually zero insulation and far-from-airtight windows were largely to blame for high heating costs. The volunteers insulated an unfurnished attic with exposed rafters to reduce draftiness, while a multi-room basement with stone walls received insulation and window sealing treatments to reduce cold air and dampness.

Bennett says Energy Management Solutions will develop its own programs across the state and country that will train people to become energy managers, auditors, and installers.

“The result will be skilled energy auditors and analysts. There’s a growing list of jobs each day with projects across the state, and not enough people to get these jobs done. Between our program and Father Young’s people that will eventually be trained all over New York, we will be a vehicle to provide change,” says Bennett. “If successful, we’ll be creating green jobs newyorkhousemagazine.com 33

immediately. Under New York State’s new Green Jobs/ Green New York law, 14,000 jobs in this line of work will be created.”

Devine said that when, or if, GREEN Teams pop up across the state, the barn raisings will be an important component in reaching out to the community.

Volunteers “will be able to perform the work because now they’d done it,” Devine says. “Caulking windows, insulating cellar or attic walls—people who had no idea how to do these things this morning will know how to by nightfall. And hopefully they’ll be able to do this in their own homes as well.”

Devine said the GREEN Team will try to do one barn raising a month, and if it gets really brave, shoot for two.

Balfe said the Altamont Program liked the GREEN Team’s idea so much that it hopes to do the same thing to facilities in Rochester and Buffalo in the near future.

George Crockwell is a recent graduate of the green training program. He has since moved out of 37 South Ferry St. and runs and coordinates all the program’s maintenance efforts in Albany—which means that when another site is weatherized, he’s the go-to man.

“It was a very intense program but it was illuminating to realize how much energy people really lose without realizing it—whether it’s through holes or by using [incandescent] light bulbs,” says Crockwell, who helped insulate the attic. “In a building this size, a few hundred holes in a building can end up equaling a huge hole, which lets tons of heat leak out.”

The barn raising ended as community volunteers, residents, Energy Management Solutions staff, and youth from the Albany and Schenectady Youth Build Programs had their efforts rewarded at the end of the day, when they enjoyed food prepared by the Altamont Program’s culinary training program. n

anuary is a complicated month, as you may have noticed, and there are a few ways you can help yourself. Mercury and Mars are retrograde, and through the 15th, we’re in the midst of eclipses.

The key to making the most of things is to attempt less rather than more. The time to prioritize has arrived, and that will generally mean finishing what you have begun, rather than starting anything new. The lunar eclipse on New Year’s Eve and the solar eclipse on Jan. 15 will present you with situations that require thoughtful attention. Start with yourself, and honoring your most sincere and basic needs. Then consider your family. Appearances don’t count now—the truth does.

Aries (March 20 – April 19)

Sometimes the most frustrating times are the most creatively fruitful. While you may have to set certain professional plans and ambitions aside for a few weeks, you have an excellent motive for introspection. You have been feeling a push to express yourself for months, and yet you may seem to have no access to those desires now.
