Fueling the Green Economy In this issue, we feature two sides of the same coin. First, we address the coming autumn and winter months with a feature about heating and the most economically and environmentally friendly ways to keep us comfortable.

Although we still rely on our most traditional methods of oil and gas, as well as nuclear power, we’re also seeing solar energy being installed in our area at a pretty steady clip. It’s certainly a long way off between our current state of affairs and a carbon-neutral world. Yet, bit by bit, people in the New York area are seeing the benefits of alternative energy sources.

This brings us to the other side of the equation, which

is bringing forth knowledge about alternative energy and sustainable practices. The September issue also features an article about “green” education through our local university system. You might be surprised to see how many colleges offer degrees and courses of study in this burgeoning field. The opportunities that lie ahead for those who realize and understand the magnitude of the coming green economy are endless, in addition to being better equipped for the eventual improvement of our economy. It’s been said over and over again that new jobs will come from the green sector, and this is a great way to learn about what options are available.

Investing in Renewable Energy; An Investment in Recovery More solar panels are going up on roofs in my community.

It’s astounding—it seems every month there’s another installation on a home or business nearby. I’d be lying if I said I’m not a little envious.

This summer my husband and I consulted the leading solar suppliers in our area and were denied the privilege of installing PV panels or a solar domestic hot water system because of our home’s lack of southern exposure and too many gables.

What I find interesting, though, is the green economy at work in our community and the number of contractors kept busy by the increasing demand for energy-efficient upgrades and clean energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal.

The heating company that gave us a quote on optimizing our heating system with a computerized energy monitor and super-efficient hot water heater [see heating story in this issue] has seen a spike in interest in tankless hot water heaters, energy monitors, and conversions from oil to natural gas and propane. The contractor we’re hiring to replace our ancient roof is reinventing himself and studying to become a Building Performance Institute (BPI)-certified energy auditor and retrofitter. This will just make him even more marketable, 10 NEW YORK HOUSE / September 2010

he says, as more homeowners seek ways to reduce their energy consumption and save money. In fact, as we reveal in Kim Plummer’s green workforce story this issue, home energy auditors will be most in demand in the green collar workforce.

The U.S. government is doing its part to incentivize homeowners to make changes—the Home Star Energy Retrofit Act of 2010, or “Cash for Caulkers” legislation that’s awaiting Senate passage, proposes giving cash rebates for weatherization and insulation upgrades and a wide variety of energy-reduction measures. Rebates can go up to $3,000 for homeowners who reduce their total home energy consumption by 20 percent; but rebates can reach as high as $8,000 for even more improvements.

Growing the Green Collar Workforce With funding for training from the state’s green legislation and initiatives for renewable retrofits, an educated, trained, and certified green workforce is finding its place in the market.

I

t’s a fact: green workforce training is becoming more prominent. Continuing education programs are offered through community colleges and nonprofit organizations, and more are sprouting up regularly throughout the state. Buildings are certified for energy efficiency and sustainability, and everyone’s new favorite color is green. But still, many are left wondering what the future of the green workforce is, and, more importantly, where the jobs will be.

It’s simplest to think of a green job as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network (O*NET) as any occupation that helps to conserve energy, develop alternative energy, reduce pollution, or recycle. O*NET breaks green careers down into three categories.

First are higher demand green occupations, where job duties remain the same, but opportunities will grow as demand increases. Like bus drivers, for example, who will be in higher demand with the increased need for public transit.

However, the other two types of green careers require training and continued education, as well as evolving green certifications to help establish standards for these new professional fields such as green building and retrofitting. These other two green career types, as defined by O*NET, are “changing skills green occupations” and “new green occupations” such as energy auditors and wind energy engineers.

In the Hudson Valley the Clean Energy Technology Training Consortium (CETT) focuses on training students in four areas of clean, renewable technology: photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, and geothermal.

CETT functions in a five-county partnership, coordinated by SUNY Ulster’s Continuing Education and Public Programs in partnership with SUNY Community Colleges of Sullivan, Rockland, Orange, and Dutchess.

According to Christopher Marx, director of Continuing and Professional Education at SUNY Ulster, nearly 40 percent of the students enrolled in the program either come from a business that is looking to evolve to be a cleaner energy, green business, or are entrepreneurs seeking to start green businesses.

As this trend continues and enrollment grows, Marx says you can begin to see where the workforce is going.

“We see that these are the people who are going to be creating the green jobs,” according to Marx.

The most popular class in the CETT program is photovoltaics. In fact, the program has expanded from the basics of installation to include classes like solar sales, solar design, advanced PV installation and design, as well as classes to help students understand the forms and regulations required by NYSERDA for PV reimbursement.

“These are people who own businesses, and sales are a big part of it,” Marx explains. “If they’re going to go out and do the work, they have to be able to navigate through the red-tape systems that the government has 20 new york house / September 2010

in place in order to get their customers the incentives that really allow people to put these things on their roof.”

Continuing education training also offers a gateway into a variety of green certifications.

Jeffrey Gordon, director of communications at New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), believes that certification is important because it sets a quality and performance standard, “providing greater assurance to the customer of the skill

sets a person has and the quality they can expect.”

The courses offered at CETT allow for two geothermal certifications with the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, as well as a new certification through NATE, North American Technician Excellence. Students can also begin certification for PV installation with the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).

NABCEP was founded in the early 2000s to raise industry standards and promote consumer confidence, and offers various certifications in renewable energy professions.

According to Timothee Neron-Bancel, senior manager for business development with NABCEP, the board’s certification for PV installation is the most popular. The certification combines education, training, and experience for a well-rounded, qualified green professional. Currently, there are about 1,200 NABCEP PV installers throughout the country. NABCEP’s PV installer certification has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute and, according to Neron-Bancel, is the only renewable energy certification to be accredited by the Institute.

While PV continues to reign in popularity, NeronBancel explains that NABCEP’s certifications are market-driven. The board also certifies solar thermal and small wind installers and is developing certifications in the next year for PV technical sales and small wind site assessor, Neron-Bancel says.

“There’s a whole aspect that is being completely overlooked right now,” Neron-Bancel relates. “A lot of people see installation as the main drive for employment, when really there are a lot more jobs in technical sales, which is why we’re launching these certifications.”

Gordon believes that this type of green workforce training and certification will transform the marketplace as incentives to have this work done become more readily available.

The Green Jobs Green New York (GJGNY) initiative passed last September was touted as “landmark” legislation by the New York State Senate. The legislation is a three-part initiative designed to lower energy costs and improve efficiencies for residential, multi-family, and small commercial properties. In addition it will fund programs for green workforce development and training, all while reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The $112 million statewide program will be administered and distributed through NYSERDA. According to Gordon, $8 million will be available for green workforce training. Nearly $80.6 million will go toward energy efficient improvements and renovations for residential, multi-family, and small commercial building. The remaining funds will go towards marketing and program administration and evaluation.

According to Gordon the jobs in highest demand through the GJGNY initiative will be home energy auditors, as $40.3 million are set aside specifically for energy improvements for existing residential housing.

However, he says that there will also be a need for air sealing and insulation installation technicians, and HVAC technicians. Gordon says that this is the type of workforce training NYSERDA will be funding in order to meet the needs of the legislation.

Neron-Bancel agrees that this is where most of the jobs will be. While NABCEP currently specializes in certifying installers, he admits there is limited employment in the field, which is part of the reason why the company is working on certification programs in technical sales and assessment.

Neron-Bancel suggests that those looking to go into the green workforce think about the skills they already have and how they can apply them to green industry.

“Understand what your niche is,” Neron-Bancel says.

“If you’re an electrician it makes sense to go into PV, if you’re a plumber it makes sense to go into solar thermal.

If you have a construction background it makes sense to go into small wind installation because the construction aspect is much larger than electrical.”

to disappear next year, so Neron-Bancel advises professionals to take their time to find where they best fit. Most agree that the green workforce is ever-growing, and that clean, renewable energy technology will be filling the needs of many industries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In building construction, building maintenance, transportation, I think that clean energy is going to end up becoming a ubiquitous part of what someone considers,â&#x20AC;? says Marx, of SUNY Ulster. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whether theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re putting up a new housing or developing a transportation system,â&#x20AC;? Inhabitat, one of the organizers of the conference, reported the rack â&#x20AC;&#x153;boldly proved that green gadgets neednâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rely upon circuit boards and batteries to accomplish their function.â&#x20AC;?

If it turns out your insulation isn’t at fault, and you can’t seem to stay comfortable or keep your heating bills down, you can optimize your existing forced air or hot water heating system with an electronic heat manager, like Intellidyne’s IntelliCon-FA or HW+, which guarantee an energy savings of 10 to 30 percent and cost roughly $400 installed. They do this by monitoring and analyzing the load on a heating or cooling system in real time, and then dynamically modifying the way that system is controlled or “cycled.” Many other intelligent controls are available as well, so consult a heating professional.

But if you’re at the point of replacing your system, upgrading your

boiler or furnace to a high efficiency system is a great option.

“Your boiler and furnace are the heart of the home,” Robert Mahoney, equipment sales manager for Abbott & Mills, says. While Abbott & Mills sells Weil-McLain, Thermal Cut, and other brands, they recommend System 2000, one the most efficient heating systems that can work on oil, natural

gas, or propane. This fuel-neutral system can save fuel consumption by up to 40 percent or more. Unlike a typical burner, once it is shut off System 2000 will continue to send all existing heat through to the desired location. “You are using every bit of water, instead of letting it just sit in the system, wasting your money,” Mahoney says. Systems like this range in price, depending on the size of your home, but can typically be purchased for around $8,000.

For homeowners looking for an alternative type of

heating, radiant floor heating, although best used in specific rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, is an option that has gained popularity. It is a system that supplies heat directly to the floors, instead of using baseboards or ducts. “With radiant floor heating you don’t have to worry about where you put your furniture, which is always a nice option for homeowners,” Mahoney says. There is no energy lost and floors can be heated with a wide variety of energy sources, including standard gas or oilfired boilers, wood-fired boilers, and solar water heaters.

These days a 200-gallon delivery of oil can run you between $500 and $600 from a full-service company, and around 30 to 40 cents cheaper per gallon from a strictly oil company. If you are looking to minimize the amount of oil you consume, a fireplace, run by either wood, gas, electricity, or pellets, can suffice. In addition to providing heat for your home, they are aesthetically appealing, and in some cases, become a decorative piece. An EPA-certified woodburning fireplace can heat a home ranging from 1,200 square feet to 3,500 square feet and burn for eight to 10 hours. The advantages are shown in the amount of money you save each year by only having to set your thermostat to a minimum.

While the savings might be very appealing, remember a woodburning fireplace is a hands-on heating source, notes Javier Fiscal, owner of FireScapes of Newburgh. Someone needs to be responsible for stacking wood and tending to the fire, he says. The Twinfire, a German fireplace, which is 93 percent efficient, the highest in the market, will cost between $5,500 and $9,000, depending on the size and model. “This is the cleanest woodburning stove on the market,” Niels Wittus, owner of Wittus-Fire by Design, says.

Unlike a wood stove, a pellet-burning fireplace works off a thermostat, like a regular boiler, so you can set your comfort level and leave. It can heat up to 2,000 square feet, but the pellets tend to be more expensive than wood. An average price of a ton of pellets, which is 50 40-lb bags, is $399. Average consumers in this area will go through three tons. The advantage of both wood and pellet-burning fireplaces is the $1,500 tax credit available until December 31. As long as your stove meets 75 percent efficiency, you can qualify. Since most of the fireplaces at FireScapes will cost between $3,500 and $5,000, this can make a significant difference.

An alternative to oil or wood is a gas fireplace, which is 83 to 86 percent efficient and also runs off a thermostat.

The idea behind gas fireplaces is that you have to get the heat to circulate, Fiscal says. Putting this in an open floor plan home works best. This can heat up to 3,000 square feet, and ranges in the same price point. For small areas, space heaters are also a good option, as they will heat 400 to 500 square feet. These products use small light bulbs, and are zone-specific.

A long-term option is geothermal heating, which primarily relies on the earth’s natural thermal energy, a renewable source, in addition to a small amount of electricity to circulate high-quality heating throughout a home. “This type of heat pump is hard to renovate into older homes, so it is often more economical for a homeowner who is building to use this option,” Fred Schabot, residential sales manager for Lowe Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, says. Although the initial investment for geothermal heating can be 10 times more expensive than conventional systems, little to no maintenance is required and it is meant to last for decades.

For homeowners with enough roof space, solar heating is an ecofriendly way to heat the home. “This three to four day job will add an additional water tank to your house and run lines up to the roof,” Schabot says. This can run you $5,000 to $10,000, depending of the number of people in your home. This also has government incentives, depending on the type of installation, which can save you up to 30 percent on your taxes. In conjunction to the year-round savings on your energy bill, solar panels are worth the investment if your home is an ideal solar candidate.

There are plenty of heating sources on the market, ranging in price. Although most seem like a big expense up front, upgrading or using alternatives will pay for themselves in the long run. For those not looking to make big purchases any time soon, be more conscious of your thermostat, and know that bundling up is always an inexpensive option. n

Comfortable Countryside

A northern Westchester family builds closer bonds and greener living through their tranquil second home in the Catskills.

hen it came time for Cathy Lehman to build a second home with her husband and become a stay-at-home mother for her two girls, the familiar mountains of her childhood were a perfect fit. Having made frequent visits to the Catskills with her family at a young age, the idea that her own children could spend part of their youth appreciating the same serene locale drew her in. “I think it’s a great family neighborhood,” she says. “I’d rather be up here or in the city. I don’t like that in-between. This is country and I love it here.”

After considering many different options, Cathy and her husband Bob Lehman, a partner with Ernst and Young LLP, settled on Yankee Barn Homes, a custom post and beam company with versatile home designs based on barn architecture. “I did a lot of research, and when I stayed in their model home, it was just a very solid product,” Cathy says. “They had a lot of choices, and I felt like this kind of house would fit great up here. There were certain things I wanted to add, and by starting with their model, I was able to do what I wanted with full control.”

At approximately 4,000 square feet, the finished home sits tucked away in the hills of Jewett and conveys a stunning view of the countryside. deck, complete with an outdoor kitchen, barbecue, dining table, and fire pit, as well as a 10-foot-deep black bottom swimming pool and volleyball court for their children and friends to enjoy. “This is my absolute favorite area,” says Cathy, who used her love for photography and creative nature to design the entire pool area as well as many other features within the house. “I hang out here all day.”

Besides being able to spend their leisure time in the stunning backyard, Brittany, 14, and Caitlin, 13, often enjoy the getaway with their closest friends in what Cathy calls “the kid section.” In a separate area of the house, the girls’ bedrooms feature a connecting Jack and Jill bathroom, as well as a guest loft located directly above, giving them ample opportunities to host sleepovers. One of the girls’ favorite features, however, is their proximity to Windham Mountain and other picturesque local scenery, where they enjoy a worryfree vibe with plenty of skiing and kayaking. “When everybody gets up here we just relax,” Cathy says. “We’ll find ourselves reading and just kind of chilling and then noticing it’s already 5 o’clock.”

For the Lehmans, one of the most important aspects when designing and building their new home was sustainability, which made Yankee Barn’s selection even more enticing. The Yankee Barn roof and wall panels in

their second home’s smarter design, the Lehmans rely only on the cool air circulating from the collection of open windows throughout the house, creating a spacious atmosphere in touch with the surrounding nature. “This is my air conditioning,” she says pointing toward a window in her workout room. “That’s all I need. No matter where you are inside the house, you feel like you’re outside. You don’t feel enclosed and stuck.”

With its convenient location, the Lehmans’ new home has inspired them to channel fresh ways to live a greener lifestyle. In addition to recycling and using compact fluorescent light bulbs, supporting local agriculture and buying organic food is very important to Cathy, especially during the summer months when the regional farm stands are open. The family is also considering installing a wind power system because they are in “the perfect place for it,” says Cathy.

The Catskills have brought more than healthy, sustainable living to the Lehmans—Cathy can now share the affection she developed for the area with her own children as their family bond grows stronger. “Just simple things like making s’mores at the fire pit bring us closer,” she explains. “They’re going to come up tonight and we’re all going to have dinner out [in the pool area]. We’ll be out here till 10 or 11pm. At home, we would sit down, eat, and they’d be up in their rooms on Facebook. When they leave home and they come up here, it’s a different mindset.” n

each of their models contain efficient, rigid closed-cell foam insulation to retain heat, requiring less energy use. This particular model also employs a Lifebreath Total Recovery Ventilator, which regulates humidity in the house, preventing condensation from forming in high-humidity areas like the kitchen or bathroom. With this system, humidity is evenly spread around the home, allowing heat to be recovered and circulated for even distribution. Additionally, radiant heat warms the floors in the bathroom, garage, and basement.

According to Lisa Glennon, design manager for Yankee Barn Homes, the building site chosen by the Lehmans was perfectly suited for solar assistance. With the help of sunlight pouring in from strategically placed windows, the large granite Rumford fireplace built in the middle of the great room acts like a heat sink. At night, when the ambient air temperature drops, the stored heat is released from the granite. Decorated with rocking chairs and a cozy couch, the great room is the perfect spot to “curl up and read an entire book,” Cathy explains. “It’s kind of a fun, easygoing, comfortable house. I didn’t want it formal. I wanted people to feel like they can come in and put their feet up.”

During the summer months at the Lehmans’ other home in northern Westchester County, they often will depend on their air conditioning throughout the day in order to stay cool. In fact, if you drive through their neighborhood, “Everybody is running air conditioners and all you can hear is a loud hum,” Cathy says. With

Mold Prevention Strategies for Renovations and New Home Building

Q:

Dear Paul, Can you tell me about mold prevention strategies for a house renovation I am doing?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve noticed mold issues seem to be more prevalent recently. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m especially concerned about mold with the heat wave we are having and how humid it has been. What do you know about mold-resistant wood and drywall? Your help is much appreciated. â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Jerry, Brooklyn

Hello Jerry, When dealing with mold you first need to make sure your house has no water penetration from anywhere, including the roof, basement, widows, or siding.

Then you need to address interior air quality and keep humidity levels down. Mold can only grow inside the home if humidity is too high, so it is essential to be cognizant of humidity in bathrooms and laundry rooms. I once saw a serious mold problem in a basement laundry room where dryer vents were clogged, so make sure all venting is in proper order.

Room-by-room dehumidifiers are good, but try and explore an indoor air quality system which can dehumidify and filter air for your entire home. This requires ductwork but is an ideal way to circulate and purify air. Since you are in New York, an area with multiple climate changes, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) as part of an air system. HRVs circulate stale air from inside your house to outside without losing heat in the winter or allowing heat from outside in during the summer.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a growing list of mold-resistant drywall options also available. When using a contractor be sure to ask for bids that include different options for mold-resistant drywall.

A more expensive mold-resistant drywall has no paper on the gypsum board surface and is covered with Fiberglas: brands include DensArmor Plus and GreenGlass. Less expensive moldresistant drywall has a paper surface treated to be mold resistant, including brands such as USGs ToughMold. For bathrooms, laundry rooms, or other potentially humid spaces you might want to buy a more expensive Fiberglas-covered drywall, which is reported to be the most moldproof.

For other areas of the house you can buy less expensive mold-resistant drywall, which still gives added protection.

Larry Baum of Tiffany Lumber Co., located in the Bronx, reported that some moldproof drywalls, like those with Fiberglas surfaces, cannot be painted as easily as regular drywall. Be sure to keep that in consideration. Mike Young of S&E Building Materials, located in Brooklyn, reported that they carry mold-resistant drywall as well as a gypsum board substitute called DragonBoard. This option is a combination of magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride, in addition to being water, mold, insect, and fire-resistant.

Mold-resistant wood products include FrameGuard and EcoBlu. The closest FrameGuard source is in Rhode Island. EcoBlu can now ship treated wood to New York from Texas. (By press time EcoBlu might have other availability options.) Like FrameGuard, EcoBlu-treated wood is mold- and termite-resistant, but EcoBlu has the added benefit of also being fire-resistant.

There are several mold-resistant paints also available, including Olympics Premium Kitchen & Bath Paint, which is ideal for rooms where moisture is often present.

etail giant IKEA announced theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll no longer carry incandescent light bulbs starting in 2011. The 125-year-old Thomas Edison invention was a timely miracle, yet grossly energy inefficient. Many countries, including the United States, are banning the sale of most incandescent bulbs in a phase-out approach.

Enter the spiral and tubular CFLs, a type of fluorescent lamp, the green darlings of green expos for years running. Energy Star reports CFLs save you $30 over their lifetime, pay for themselves in six months, use 75 percent less energy, and last 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb. One downside: CFLs contain mercury, complicating disposal. Home Depot offers free CFL recycling, lessening the burden.

Despite their ecofriendly nature, the assumption that CFLs will be around much longer is untrue.

Halogen bulbs use one-third less electricity than incandescent bulbs and fit in conventional sockets.

Super long-lasting LEDs are more efficient than CFLs and sales are taking off like the hula hoop in the 1950s.

The next best thing illuminating lighting? Light Tape: an electroluminescent light source as thin as a credit card, capable of any color, can bend around any surface, for hundreds of feet, indoors or outdoors. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a light source containing no glass, gas, or any breakable filamentsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and 40 percent more efficient than LEDs at equal brightness.

Yet two powerful conjunctions that occur around the time of the equinox—Jupiter conjunct Uranus in Pisces, and Chiron conjunct Neptune in Aquarius—both say essentially the same thing: trust your intuition, and trust your ideas.

Aries (March 20 – April 19)

I suggest you avoid competitive situations, and do your best to make sure that you do not urge a spirit of competition from your intimate encounters. We live in a self-obsessed society that lacks self-knowledge.

The Maze One homeowner found unforeseen beauty and environmental benefits when he stopped clearcutting his field.

In 1990, my wife and I built a house on land that had been a cornfield. For many years thereafter, twice each summer, we paid a man named Bernie $125 to make sure the field did not revert to forest. Finally, one summer we asked ourselves a simple question: “Why are we doing this?” Failing to find a reasonable answer, the next time Bernie brought his brush hog I told him to just cut along the driveway. Then, on impulse, I asked if he’d cut some trails through the field.

Bernie pulled his brush hog behind his tractor while I ran in front of him. Pointing out where I wanted him to cut, I fell more than once in the uneven field. Bernie undoubtedly thought I was crazy.

That year and the next, the unmowed parts of the field stayed mainly goldenrod. Then it began to change.
