Energy for Tomorrow In June, PowerMarket and its partner, the Stamford, Connecticut-based Green Street Power Partners, opened a 5.544-MW community solar farm, which Kaplan says is New York State’s largest, on Riley Road in New Windsor. The project offers approximately 750 Central Hudson customers the chance to subscribe and save. Although Kaplan says there’s no risk to subscribing—there’s no impact on a customer’s relationship with Central Hudson or third-party suppliers, and subscribers can withdraw at any time—he notes that “being New Yorkers, like we are, it’s sometimes hard to sell us something that’s too good to be true—and community solar is both too good and true.”

At press time, the Riley Road project’s subscribers included the United Methodist Church and the nonprofit Hudson River Nature Museum, both in Cornwall-on-Hudson; and Fruition Chocolate in Boiceville.

“In terms of sustainability and the environment, this is a great fit for us; plus, no wires, no panels, no installation, no issues with the roof,” says Tom Bregman, Hudson River Nature Museum’s executive director. “The goal of the program is to activate all of us to participate in our community’s energy future.

New York wants residential and small commercial customers to participate. Other states, like Minnesota, have only a few large commercial entities participating. Here, we have this diverse group of participants from all different walks of life.”

The Riley Street project was expected to be fully subscribed by early September, according to Lisa Raffin, chief investment officer at Green Street Power Partners; the partners will open a second project, Baxter Community Solar, nearby on Jackson Avenue in New Windsor later this year.

hen I bought a house in Kingston, I was as eager to install solar panels on its roof as I was to renovate it. But my hopes of going solar were quickly quashed. A neighbor’s elm tree—tall and lovely—stood smack in the way of the sun. So I put my solar plans on hold. I had plenty of renovating to do in the meantime anyway.

The elm tree recently came down in a storm, so I could install my own system, but there’s no need.

New York State’s community-distributed generation program—aka community solar—allows local utility customers to generate solar energy, and save on utility costs, simply by signing up—and a slew of solar-power utility companies are participating.

“Community solar is a new type of energy opportunity for everyone”—residents, small businesses, schools, and houses of worship—“to enjoy the benefits of receiving solar energy, especially people who otherwise couldn’t participate,” says Jason Kaplan, general counsel and director of operations at PowerMarket, based in Brooklyn.

“They might be renters, not own their roof, or have too much shade on their property. But they may also be passionate about using solar energy, and want to save money on energy bills, and community solar offers both those opportunities.”

Each community solar project is owned and operated by a project developer, management company, or contractor. The sponsor oversees the subscribers and interfaces with the local utility. Based on their historic annual usage, subscribers are each allocated at least 1,000 kWh per year. “Solar energy is generated by this project, and all that clean energy is sent into the grid,” says Kaplan. “Community solar acknowledges the value of the energy being made and entering the grid, and provides monthly credits of up to 10 percent to each subscriber.”

To celebrate the Brooklyn-based Workstead’s 10th anniversary this summer, the architectural and interiors company opened a second studio in Hudson and launched its new “Chamber” line of lighting fixtures. As weekend residents of Hudson, Workstead’s cofounders, Robert Highsmith and Stefanie Brechbuehler, who married at a local Dutch barn in 2011, create customdesigned spaces and furnishings blending Midcentury Modern, Contemporary, and historic elements. At their new, 1,000-square-foot upstate auspices on Warren Street, they are continuing to “explore concepts of

enclosure and seriality,” says Highsmith. Workstead’s products can be seen at Hudson’s Rivertown Lodge, which Highsmith and Brechbuehler designed in 2015.

The Chamber collection features sculptural metal shrouds that can be raised and lowered to reveal light by degree or conceal it altogether and display only its glow.

The line’s four pieces—sconce, pendant, chandelier, and table lamp—are available in brushed nickel, bronze, and brass finishes.

Architect and interior designer Carol Kurth, based in Bedford, is well known for blending art and design. Her new “Squarish Chair – In Bloom” follows suit as the first piece in a collection currently in development, which promises to similarly juxtapose form and function. The swivel chair is also a dynamic piece of sculpture. Its creamcolored, leather-upholstered tapered lines are accented by a bold cut-out that draws attention to its frame.

Handcrafted leather flowers further emphasize the chair’s dynamism, seemingly blooming from the chair in artful clusters that signify hope, according to Kurth. She says she designed the piece “with a vision to create a chair that literally flourished beyond the boundaries of the surface of the chair, and creating an interplay of shadows.” The Squarish Chair debuted at an artisans’ panel at the annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City last May. So far, Kurth’s new collection also includes award-winning hardware.

Bogolanfini is the traditional fabric of the West African country of Mali, and is as unusual in its materials as it is in its production. First, women dye the 100-percent cotton cloth with fermented mud. Then, using narrow looms, men weave the cotton into 5.9-inch strips of fabric and sew them together to create clothing and home goods that are available from Adolophine, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo. IN THE 1990S, THE MUSIC WORLD HAD WRITTEN OFF CARLOS SANTANA, WHO HADN’T HAD A SIZEABLE HIT SINCE 1971. Enter musicbusiness guru Suzanne Hilleary-Cameron, who paired him up with composer Itaal Shurr on a song Shurr had cowritten with Matchbox 20 vocalist Rob Thomas. The song, “Smooth,” won three Grammy Awards in 1999 and became the second-best-selling single of all time. In 2000, its success allowed HillearyCameron and her husband, musician Jeffrey Cameron, who together run the music licensing and management firm WACBiz (Writers Artists Composers Business), to purchase an 1864 farmhouse in Kerhonkson.

“Sometimes we call it ‘the house that “Smooth” built,’” Hilleary-Cameron jokes. But the couple’s budget for renovating was tight, and the 5,000-squarefoot antique structure badly needed fixing up. After redoing the second floor and raising the roof to give the couple and their two sons more living space, it was time to attack the kitchen.

“It wasn’t terrible-looking, just sort of IKEA-ed out and not to our taste,” says Hilleary-Cameron. “The big problem was the floor.” After decades of moisture seeping from the unsealed stone foundation, the original wideplank pine floor was in danger of collapse. Luckily, Hilleary-Cameron’s sister, Bronwyn Ferguson, is an interior designer (of AskBronwyn/RENOVATE) whose partner, James Stephens, is a master contractor (“the John Coltrane of wood,” says Cameron). In February, Stephens drove down from Vermont, and he and Cameron rehabbed the floor and took the walls down to the studs.

Cameron also built a set of wood foundation forms to mold the staggering 38,000 tons of cement that were pumped into the basement to seal it from the elements and stabilize the structure. The cracked stone foundation was repaired; cellar joists were remade; old plumbing was replaced by Heckeroth Plumbing & Heating; outdated wiring was redone by local electrician Michael Ponte (“Another musician, there’s so many of them up here!” HillearyCameron says); soundproof, water-repellant insulation was installed; and moisture-resistant, sustainably made AdvanTech subflooring was laid down.

and recessed spot lighting was installed along the back-wall counter area.

Ferguson connected the couple with Omega Cabinets, where they worked with representative Heather Belanger of Lacillades LLC on final cabinetry designs. The counter’s backsplash was redone with Byzantine Arabesque Alice Blue ceramic tiles from TileBar, working with the new royal blue-andwhite color scheme to give the room an airy Provencal feel. The like-new Bosch dishwasher in the refinished central island—whose chunky Latoscana porcelain farmhouse sink is set into a marble countertop from Barra & Trumbore in Kerhonkson—and in-counter GE gas stove came from a model home in Vermont. The Kenmore refrigerator was relocated from the counter’s right end to the left, and in its footprint Stephens built a cabinet for the wall oven/microwave unit. EaseLife stainless-steel hardware was used for the pantry’s new sliding barn door, and a Sea Gull chandelier and retro-chic Edison bulbs light the island.

Lastly, the 520-square-foot floor needed resurfacing. And with the WACBiz client band Little Days set to visit during Mountain Jam in June, time was ticking away. But the big-box store from which the couple had ordered the flooring couldn’t get it there on time. “But then we found the Carpet Store and Warehouse in Rosendale, which turned out to be a godsend,” says HillearyCameron. “Within two days, they’d found us 800 square feet of Mohawk fiveinch maple flooring, delivered, and installed it—for half the price of what the first place quoted us.” (The 280 extra square feet will resurface the staircase.)

The result is a cozy kitchen that feels like an Old-World tavern, yet is light and modern. “People compliment us about the upstairs rooms and I say, ‘Yeah, but have you seen the kitchen?’” quips Cameron.

The couple christened the new kitchen by inviting Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke and his wife for dinner. A classic Colonial revival dining set is nestled under a bay window with vistas of the surrounding Shawangunk Mountains. “The whole thing was about five months of crazy construction and making our meals with a hotplate, but it was absolutely worth it,” says Hilleary-Cameron, running her hand across the island’s marble surface. Like the song says: smooth.

STONE RIDGE Hip, Historic Enclave

N

estled between the Catskills and the Shawangunks, Stone Ridge’s Main Street Historic District can sneak up on you as you head through the center of Ulster County. A cluster of restaurants, inns, Colonial-era houses, galleries, and small businesses comprises the heart of town. It’s a well-stocked but quiet Main Street, compared to other Hudson Valley towns, but even though “bustling” is the last word that could be used to describe the 5.2-square-mile hamlet of Stone Ridge, it emanates vibrancy—not to mention a rich history.

As part of the Town of Marbletown, settled in the late 1600s, Stone Ridge’s historic Main Street is located on Routes 209/213, a major thoroughfare that was established when the area helped provide Europe with grains and butter. Thanks to the Esopus and Rondout creeks flowing through town, as well as easy access to the Hudson River, Marbletown’s exceptionally fertile ground bolstered its status as an agricultural hub.

Stone Ridge’s Main Street Historic District is a venerable time capsule of Colonial-era and early 19th-century structures, which has remained largely untouched, to the delight of history buffs. One of the Stone Ridge’s claims to fame is that George Washington spent a night in the home of Cornelius Wynkoop, major of the Revolutionary Minutemen, before attending Wynkoop’s wedding reception in neighboring Hurley. But those who live there today adore it for its neighborly small-town charm, reminiscent of the earlier half of the 20th century.

THE SCENE “Stone Ridge is a bit of an upstate cliche,” says Robert Miraldi, a journalist and retired SUNY New Paltz professor who moved there in 1982 with his wife, investigative journalist Mary Beth Pfeiffer, and their family.

Stone Ridge checks all the boxes of a quintessential upstate hamlet thanks to its bucolic setting, a population of just over 1,100, agricultural bounty (summer corn from Davenport Farms is highly coveted), and a small but select number of businesses. On weekends, local residents can be found strolling through town and along the rail trail bordering Route 209. Or they’ll be shopping at Emmanuel’s or Applestone Meat Company for groceries; the eclectic Marbletown Hardware, which advertises as “the World’s Only Rock-and-Roll Hardware Store”; or Twilight Acres Homegrown, which specializes in field-grown bouquets and offers CSA shares of its flowers.

For a hamlet, Stone Ridge has a surprising number of food options. On weekends, crowds pack into The Roost; Benny’s Pizzeria; and Bodacious Bagels, which is famous for its falafel; and the gamut of Asian food offerings: Ming Moon’s Chinese food, Asia’s Asian fusion, and Momiji’s Japanese fare.

Some of the hamlet’s historic structures now live luxurious second lives as upscale inns and event venues. The 18th-century Dutch colonial Hasbrouck House on Main Street is a boutique hotel with an adjacent orchard, historic landmark pool, and Butterfield farm-to-table restaurant and bar with a menu that changes according to the season.

“We love Stone Ridge because it’s just as close to the ’Gunks as New Paltz, but without the pretentiousness,” says Ursula Lucander, a Rondout Valley Central School District tutor who’s lived in town since 2010 with her husband, SUNY Rockland professor of multicultural studies David Lucander, and is raising a family there. “There’s a lot of fun, outdoor things

During his tenure as president of the Stone Ridge Library Board of Trustees, Miraldi led a million-dollar community fundraising effort to restore and rehabilitate the library’s 1798 and 1806 buildings. The library serves as one of the hamlet’s main social hubs, and the annual library fair, held every June for 73 years, attracts thousands of people each year.

Stone Ridge is also home to a small group of artists, including internationally renowned sculptor Martin Puryear and painter Marilyn Reynolds, whose studio Blue Marble Arts is in town. Stone Ridge boasts a small but palpable arts scene. Pearl Gallery on Main Street features 20th-century and contemporary modern art, with both an indoor gallery and an outdoor sculpture garden. The innovative Three Phase Center offers “collaborative art research and building,” and hosts a different resident artist every month.

Much of the life on Main Street also revolves around the progressive, independent pre-K-to-eighth-grade High Meadow School, which hosts a number of fundraisers each year, including the popular Ride the Ridge bicycling event and concerts featuring jazz-jam keyboard virtuoso and High Meadow parent John Medeski.

THE MARKET In the 1980s, Stone Ridge was seen as a countrified alternative to New Paltz. Nowadays, the hamlet’s growing popularity among both transplants and weekenders has made it a destination unto itself.

From 2000 to 2016, the median household income soared from around $39,000 to just over $89,000, and the average house value rose from $126,100 to nearly $259,500. ourtney Kolb is always ahead of the curve. In 2013, before Instagram became synonymous with marketing, the Beacon native started an account called Hudson Valley Compass and began highlighting the best the Hudson Valley has to offer. The account has since racked up over 19,000 followers, but Kolb is already onto the next big thing: the village of Wappingers Falls.

“It’s important for us to do things here responsibly,” she says during a summer walk through town, gesturing to the trim, three-story building on Main Street, featuring a salon on the bottom floor and apartments above, that she and her husband are renovating. New sidewalks, crossing signs, and lamp posts are also under construction throughout the village. Kolb is currently serving as the chair of the Wappingers Economic Development Committee, and she and her husband are committed to raising their family there. “If I don’t believe in something, I don’t get this involved,” she says.

Calling what’s happening in Wappingers Falls a “revival” isn’t quite accurate. Unlike Poughkeepsie to the north and Beacon to the south, Wappingers isn’t coming back from hard times. There was no dark age here—no misguided urban renewal projects that leveled historic architecture or disrupted the fabric of village life. Maybe some of the historic buildings on the outskirts of downtown didn’t always have businesses in them, and perhaps too many people saw Wappingers as a shortcut to get to Poughkeepsie’s malls instead of a picturesque shopping destination in itself, but Wappingers still kept quietly hummed along. The Wagon Wheel kept serving pizzas, the County Players kept putting on plays, and Graceland Tattoo kept the locals inked. Life was sleepy, but good.

Newfound Energy

Then came County Fare, a neighborhood bar with an ample selection of craft beers and a locally sourced menu that’s more bistro than bar food, followed by the Vinyl Room, a beer-and-records shop featuring guest sessions from legendary New York City DJs. Today a new, homegrown energy is pulsing through the village, both literally—the 150-year-old hydroelectric plant at the falls, restored by the Terbush family 30 years ago, is providing local, renewable energy to many of the village’s businesses—and figuratively, as many of the downtown buildings have recently been bought by local investors and entrepreneurs who are renovating them. Even empty storefronts on the outskirts are being built out to accommodate new businesses.

THE SCENE Wappingers may not yet be the weekend destination of curious New York City travelers, but the village is more affordable than nearby Beacon. The New Hamburg train station is an easy drive, making a downstate commute doable. And the village’s charm extends well beyond its confines. The Chapel of the Sacred Mirrors, an art gallery/spiritual center, is a psychedelic, mystical delight, attracting visitors from New York and throughout the region; and the Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery, perched on the banks of the Hudson, offers public mediation sessions every weeknight. Or head to Obercreek Farm’s brewery to enjoy beer brewed onsite while relaxing next to the fields where the hops are grown, along with vegetables for a thriving farm stand and community-supported agriculture operation. The Wappinger Creek Boathouse Community Center, opening this fall, promises easy access to both the creek and the Hudson River. And coal-fired pizza icon Patsy’s will soon open its first-ever location outside the five boroughs, right in the village.

Nearby, in Poughkeepsie, are private schools Holy Trinity Elementary School (pre-K through eighth grade), St. Martin De Porres School (pre-K through eighth grade), Poughkeepsie Day School (pre-K through 12th grade), Our Lady of Lourdes High School, and Oakwood Friends School (grades six through 12).

THE MARKET Wappingers Falls’s newfound energy extends to its real estate scene. For years, the village had a low turnover rate, meaning that those who had their hearts set on moving here had to be prepared to wait, and then leap into action when something finally popped up. But now listings are blooming across the village, as those who held on through the recession and have seen their home values bounce back are finally cashing in.

It’s still a seller’s market, but buyers can find values like an 1868 historic five-bedroom in the village for $324,000. A three-bedroom ranch on a double lot can be had for $270,000. Want more room? Upgrade to a renovated 6,000-square-foot, six-bedroom Colonial for $699,000.

But if the three-minute drive to the train station is simply too much to bear, and you’re looking to make a splash, you’ve got a chance to buy an island.

Just offshore from the New Hamburg train station, the 1.3-acre Rabbit Island has only one home on it: a four-bedroom, four-bathroom house for $4 million. It’s pricey, but it provides river views from every room and total privacy—and it’s close to both the train station and Cafe Con Leche, located between the train station and White’s Hudson River Marina, in case you get hungry for some of the best Puerto Rican food in the Hudson Valley.

Homestead Ecosystem Kathy Puffer was determined to become a microfarmer. Sandy soil couldn’t stop her.

or most women, working a full-time job, raising kids, and managing a household means more than a full plate. But for Kathy Puffer, being a teacher, wife, and mother is only part of the story. She also runs an ambitious 1.75-acre microfarm on her family’s property in Tillson.

Puffer, who’s a speech pathologist at the Arc of Ulster-Greene, a nonprofit developmental disabilities agency, and her husband Ed, a computer programmer at IBM in Poughkeepsie, bought the property in 2009. Their eldest daughter, Abigail, was two, and Puffer was pregnant with their second daughter, Meredith. They moved to the 2004 saltbox cape in Tillson from a condominium in Highland, looking for extra space and a chance to try homesteading. “We were going to be able to grow our own food and raise animals that were appropriate for our region and our scale,” she says.

Having grown up on a small farm in Florida and studied indigenous agriculture in southern Mexico during college, Puffer wanted to begin farming in hopes of alleviating Abigail’s autism diagnosis and both daughters’ food allergies. “As a mother, I was just trying to get through, week by week,” she says, “just trying to survive.”

But the property proved to be a poor candidate for Puffer’s agricultural aspirations. When her newly planted fruit trees started dying off, she knew the soil needed remediation. “It was very disappointing to realize that we had sand and shale, basically throughout the entire property,” she says. “It was heartbreaking to discover that.”

Soil restoration is a lengthy process, so Puffer researched alternative sustainable and economical agricultural methods, and discovered vertical farming. The method frees growers from the customary requirements of fertile land and warm weather through the use of indoor towers, where plants grow vertically and aeroponically (without soil or an aggregate medium), using minimal water.

Puffer’s 136-square-foot aeroponic greenhouse, built in 2015 with assistance from a Pennsylvania-based Amish designer, contains 10 towers boasting over 1,000 plants, grown using seeds from the Hudson Valley Seed Library, including lettuce, bok choy, Swiss chard, kale, herbs, and parsley, plus basil that’s sold wholesale to area restaurants.

Puffer incorporated the venture as Hudson Valley Vertical Farms in 2013, and once the greenhouse was installed, she established a small community-supported agriculture program to recoup the cost. The CSA is thriving, with pickup at RosenSpace, a community center in nearby Rosendale.

The property has grown into Puffer’s “homestead ecosystem,” and has become her greatest passion. At the Omega Institute, Boswyck Farms in Queens, and Holistic Management International, she has trained in hydroponic aeroponic growing; holistic farm and ranch management; and permaculture, a field focused on self-sustaining agricultural systems that

harmoniously blend with their natural surroundings. In the process, Puffer’s mission has expanded from caring for her own family to educating the public on microfarming.

As the microfarm evolves, her family is at her side. Ed, a self-described “heavy lifter,” contributes elbow grease and cheerleading, says Puffer, and Abigail and Meredith “help with all the farm chores.”

The Puffers’ menagerie’s members pull their own weight, too. The animals’ composted manure is replenishing the soil.

“Having animals, with the straw and the manure, is really important for building up that compost and soil restoration,” Puffer says. Three angora goats graze the property’s poison ivy; Puffer spins their fiber—along with those of two angora rabbits—into raw fleece, sold online. Free-range eggs are also sold online, and the Puffers dine on home-raised chickens, or “meat birds.” Two beehives, supported by pollinator flowers, produce honey for Puffer to barter for beef.

The once-sandy soil has been amended so successfully, it’s allowed Puffer to begin growing on the land. The family’s

The installation, which required only two large tanks and some basic plumbing supplies, costing about $800, provides enough methane gas fuel to power the Puffers’ two-burner gas stove and outdoor grill.

“The joy it brings me, seeing that blue flame on my stove—that this is true renewable energy—I just want to share that with as many people as I can,” Puffer says. She and Dr. Culhane, together with other associates, cofounded the nonprofit Solar CITIES with the mission of educating the public on biodigester technology and supporting users around the world. “It’s so important to be doing what you’re teaching,” she says. Puffer has shared biodigester and homesteading knowledge via workshops locally and in New York City, Haiti, Colombia, and Belize. The microfarm serves as a biogas education hub and local workshop venue; Puffer also sells startup biodigester and aeroponic equipment. At

personal “food forest,” planted with seedlings in 2014, is packed with elderberries, currants, gooseberries, apricots, pears, plums, raspberries, bush cherries, and sap-producing sugar maples. “It’s a privilege to be able to offer that to our family and to have such abundance,” Puffer says.

Yet another ingredient helps remediate the land: bio-slurry.

Initially, Puffer tried composting food waste to create organic fertilizer, but found it a messy affair, attracting flies and vermin.

Then, at Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival festival in 2013, she met Dr. Thomas H. Culhane, a Florida-based, Nat Geo-backed biodigester technology educator and innovator.

Through anaerobic digestion (meaning bacteria that digests organic waste), a tank-based biodigester converts organic waste into methane-based biogas, a clean energy that can be used as cooking fuel, and bio-slurry, a nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer known informally as “compost tea.” Dr. Culhane advocates using bio-slurry as plant food for vertical, aeroponic setups, eliminating the need for pricey liquid nutrients and creating a closed-loop, food/waste/cooking fuel production cycle.

Puffer was an immediate convert to biodigesters, and feels that the system is what makes her microfarm flourish. In 2014,

RosenSpace, she runs winter courses on topics like soapmaking and beekeeping.

“What we try to show everybody is that you can do this at the home level, at the homestead level,” she says. “It’s really not that hard. Once you get started, it pretty much manages itself.” Puffer’s experience has also shown her that regardless of the type or size of land, agricultural pursuits are within everyone’s reach. “You don’t have to build from scratch,” she explains. “You can refit a previously existing home.”

Ten years after she first despaired about those first fruit trees she planted dying off in sandy soil, Puffer turns out an impressive production yield. As for her daughters? “Their food allergies have disappeared.” Abigail’s autism has also improved, which Puffer credits not just to the food, but also to her connection with the farm animals.

“I can share what I’ve learned with other people so other women don’t have to go through what I went through,” she says. “I had an idea and a dream and I kind of jumped in before I knew what I was doing. I have been literally learning as I go.

I’ve had lot of fun. It’s something people shouldn’t be afraid of jumping in and trying, even if you do make mistakes.” upstate HOUSE

idcentury Modern has been making a comeback for the past two decades, and its minimal furnishings still look as fresh and innovative as they did during the postwar years, when the burgeoning American population adopted a more casual, egalitarian lifestyle. Today, Midcentury Modern designs are available from high-end sources like 1stdibs.com to low-end, big-box retailers. Designers and influencers hail Midcentury as so classic and versatile that it may be the only style that won’t ever go out of style.

The Midcentury Modern movement was led by industrial designer Russel Wright and his wife Mary, who established America’s first lifestyle brand, influencing future creators and tastemakers from Andy Warhol to Martha Stewart. Believing “good design is for everyone,” Wright rebelled against “style dictators” like Emily Post. Combining traditional and modern design and using durable, inexpensive materials, he created elegant, affordable functional objects for the layman.

Born into a Quaker family in 1904 in Lebanon, Ohio, Wright began studying architecture at Princeton but left to train with New York set designer Norman Bel Geddes, creator of the “Futurama” exhibit for the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

In the 1920s, Mary, the daughter of a textile manufacturer (and Albert Einstein’s niece), convinced her husband to turn his papier-mache animal props into metal bookends. They were a hit, and Wright soon switched from using chrome to cheaper, mass-marketable aluminum. His aluminum cocktail accessories proved so popular that they were featured in the Machine Art show at MoMA in 1934.

Wright is best known for his curvy-silhouetted, roundedged, richly-colored, mix-and-match dinnerware, made

by Steubenville Pottery from 1939 to1959 (and currently produced by Bauer Pottery in Los Angeles). Created to be affordable, each piece of the American Modern line was imprinted on the back with Wright’s signature. The dinnerware line sold over 250 million pieces, and whenever new stock arrived at Macy’s, customers flocked there.

An array of other sleek, no-fuss, inexpensive home goods followed: serving sets, glassware, table and standing lamps, furniture made mostly of maple (which Wright called “the wood of our forefathers”), Bakelite radios, and a Wurlitzer organ.

Although Mary was also a designer, she became Wright’s marketing wiz. She exhibited his wares in lifelike rooms in department stores, which had never been done before; pioneered the concept of a design showroom; and brought theatricality to their presentations. In 1949, when Wright dumped a bin of new dishwasher-safe dinnerware on a metal table to demonstrate its durability, the New York Times reported that “even the most butter-fingered husband could be trusted to wash the Wrights’ casual china.” In 1950, the Wrights’ Guide to Easier Living was published, establishing them as design and lifestyle gurus. The book favored overthrowing tradition for modern ease, advising that, if, say, you couldn’t afford to throw a formal dinner party with grandma’s china, crystal, and silver, you could host a buffet instead—using Wright’s inexpensive, stylish tableware.

Although based in Manhattan, the Wrights also owned a property in Garrison, which can be toured today. Their upstate HOUSE

upstate home was a lifestyle experiment, featured in Life magazine in 1962 as “A Wonderful House to Live In.” The Wrights bought the 75-acre property, an abandoned granite quarry and logging site overlooking the Hudson River, in 1942. Wright spent 15 years studying its topography, creating trails, diverting a stream, planting native species, and turning the quarry into a swimming and skating pond with a 30-foot waterfall, while the couple lived in a small farmhouse (still existing). After Mary died of cancer, at age 47, in 1952, Wright hired architect David L. Leavitt to design a house on his chosen spot: a rock ledge overlooking the new pond. Wright designed the home’s interior while Leavitt did

the exterior (though there is some controversy over who contributed what). Construction began in 1957; and in 1962, Wright moved in with his adopted daughter Ann, who named the house Dragon Rock, since its setting resembles a dragon curled around and sipping from the pond.

Today, the low-slung, Japanese-style house and museum is called Manitoga: The Russel Wright Design Center. Wright chose the Algonquin name, meaning “Place of the Great Spirit.” The property has been expanded to realize his full vision, featuring woodsy glades, moss “rooms,” wildflowerfilled ravines, a grove of swaying birch trees Wright nicknamed “the Martha Graham Girls,” four miles of hiking paths (open year-round), and access to the Appalachian Trail.

“When [Wright] arrived, it was a scarred, desecrated landscape,” says Allison Cross, Manitoga’s executive director.

“He brought it back to life.” The site, which offers tours of the house and studio from April to November, has more to offer than just Midcentury Modern design. It also teaches visitors about living in harmony with nature.

Wright delighted in the wilderness, designing the house to appear as if growing out of the stone, while keeping pieces of the site’s industrial past—metal rings drilled into the stone and bits of machinery for doorknobs. He brought nature indoors by “balancing modern materials—plastics and styrofoam, for example—with natural ones—granite with Formica or resin infused with pine needles or butterflies,” says Cross. The double-height living room is supported by a giant tree trunk. An early environmentalist, Wright created insulation from styrofoam, plastic laminate, and foil; included walls of windows designed for heating and cooling ; and built a “green” roof. The rooms have been preserved to showcase his lifestyle, down to a pack of Salem cigarettes in an ashtray on Wright’s desk—and tour guides demonstrate how the built-in shelving’s panels were swapped seasonally. “Manitoga represents a life dedicated to good design, which elevates the spirit and gives a sense of beauty and timelessness,” says Cross, who instituted an artist-inresidence program to help revitalize Manitoga. “One of the challenges of historic house museums, whether from the 1800s or the 20th century, is that we preserve them so you see that slice of time, but they have to stay alive,” she says. The residency program, which has hosted a dozen artist residents, is “about keeping alive and inspiring that spirit of creative output.” This fall, Ivy Baldwin Dance presents “Quarry,” a performance based on Wright’s desire to blur the line between inside and outside. Other programs are also under consideration, says Cross, including a design camp for adults, poet residencies, and retreats. A collection of over 500 Wright objects, from the late American industrial design collector George R. Kravis II, is being displayed.

When it comes to design or sustainability, Manitoga offers “timeless lessons that were innovative in his day and they are very important for us to embrace because they are being ignored,” says Cross. “Ridiculously big houses or ones that pay no attention to the movement of the sun, so that they cost more to heat and cool, are being built. We’re repealing all kinds of environmental controls. It’s very important to hold up Manitoga as a beautiful oasis that has stood the test of time.”

fter more than a decade of living in Brooklyn, architectural photographer Garrett Rowland and his wife Jillian, a design publication editor, yearned for a weekend escape. The California natives wanted to offset their busy weekday schedules with leisurely weekends spent outdoors, so they decided to start looking upstate for a second home.

Finding a house that was move-in ready was definitively not on the couple’s wish list. Thanks to their creative professions, the Rowlands are well attuned to the nuances of design, structure, space, and color, and they were eager to take on a home renovation project.

While scouting out houses off the Taconic Parkway, they reminisced about their college days, when Jillian attended Vassar College and Garrett was a student at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. They decided to focus their search on Beacon, which they had passed through many times, traveling on MetroNorth to visit each other.

After a six-month search, the couple fell for a 1970s threebedroom, three-bathroom home not far from Beacon’s Main Street. Although the house was in a state of disrepair, they appreciated its overall structure and were excited about its potential. They were also enticed by its hilltop location and the canopy of trees that give the 1.5-acre property privacy.

“Initially built in pieces, the home included decks, closets, lots of walls, a loft above the garage, and an office addition,” says Jillian Rowland. “With the redesign, we wanted to make it feel more cohesive yet have separate spaces for entertaining, resting, and working.”

The couple called upon their longtime friend Stephen Conte, a fellow Pratt graduate and the principal of STUDIOSC in Brooklyn. “Since we work in the design field and wanted to be hands-on, it was essential that we have an open dialogue from planning through completion,” says Rowland.

STUDIOSC’s redesign involved reimagining the floor plan to open up the space. The mission: to honor the integrity of

the house’s original ’70s-style architecture, but create a more contemporary aesthetic.

The main living room was originally the house’s centerpiece, but it was separated from the kitchen, so STUDIOSC joined the spaces by removing walls and adding windows. “This led us to realize that the project was going to be extensive, a full gut-renovation,” says Conte. The flow of the original layout sectioned the space off into separate rooms, he explains. STUDIOSC also opened up the interior partitions to showcase the stairs to the loft.

The revamped kitchen area is awash in white, and the modern ambiance contrasts well with the rustic sensibility of the space’s original vaulted ceiling. Built-in, white-lacquered cabinets, created by Hudson Valley Cabinet & Woodworking in Fishkill, are seamlessly integrated into the walls. The white countertop, back splash, and kitchen island are offset by wooden kitchen stools, which are painted light green. An elongated window extends across the entire back wall, and white hexagonal floor tiles from Highstyle Stone & Tile in New York City contrast subtly with the room’s other textures to create interest. A door in the kitchen area links the house to the garage.

STUDIOSC also redesigned the original staircase, which extends from the kitchen to an office loft. The cantilevered, floating staircase, created by Acadia Stairs in Fishkill, serves as a showpiece, breaking up the space without physically separating the kitchen from the dining area. In the bright, airy dining space, a modern chandelier looms above an elongated table, and a colorful, vibrantly patterned rug adds artistic flair. The dining area opens up to an upper and lower deck overlooking the backyard.

Preserving the character of the vaulted ceilings in the living room, which is adjacent to the dining area, was a priority.

The original ceilings were stained to resemble cherry wood and sealed with a high-gloss finish. STUDIOSC stripped the sealant, sanded the wood, and added a water-based satin finish for a more contextual feel.

Orange accents in the living area’s furnishings pop against the blue and gray palette. Large windows welcome the sunlight, which sparkles across the original, refinished hardwood floors. The windows look out onto the front lawn, which was landscaped only slightly to retain the natural look and feel of the original site.

The three bedrooms were designed for simplicity and comfort. “The master bedroom is the only space with wallto-wall carpet. It gives a sense of comfort, especially in the wintertime,” says Conte.

As is the case with many fixer-uppers, the three bathrooms were dated and required a full renovation. Conte decided to “contrast the warm, decorative living spaces with a spa-like feeling.” The focus of the master bath is a white freestanding tub that is set against a dark tiled wall (also by Highstyle Stone & Tile). Custom walnut vanities by Hudson Valley Cabinet & Woodworking add warmth.

As with any renovation, there were a few surprises along the way. Replacing the front windows revealed structural problems that triggered a compete wall renovation.

Construction also continued longer than planned—beyond the birth of the Rowlands’ son. But the couple feels the renovation was well worth it, since it’s brought them the “blank slate, to be filled with art and life,” explains Rowland, that they envisioned from the start.

fter renting a vacation cottage year-round for 10 years on Orange County’s Greenwood Lake, near Warwick, New York City couple Karen and Jim Thompson (not their real names) began thinking about creating a “family base” there—a place to gather with their two children and extended family for summer vacations, holidays, and ski weekends. “It had to be homey and accommodating for lots of different types of guests,” says Karen Thompson. In 2016, two neighboring properties came up for sale—one featuring a 1950s A-frame and a small cottage, and an adjacent property with a two-story, stone house built in the 1980s. The couple snapped both properties up, and began looking for a designer to renovate the stone house.

Karen Thompson found Elizabeth Mercer, principal of Mercer Interior, based in New York City and Warwick, on Houzz. “We had strong aesthetic preferences from the start, but we needed guidance,” she says. “It was a complete redo of the look and feel of the space. ‘Rustic modern lake house’ was what we wanted.”

In its former incarnation, the 2,700-square-foot, two-story house was “very fussy and formal,” with “stuffy parlors,” says Mercer (who also refurnished the A-frame).

“It was time for an update” in favor of a look that the designer describes as “modernized and comfy.” The house is located on the shore of the seven-mile lake, so nature led Mercer’s design. “I was inspired by the beautiful outdoors right outside the windows,” she says. “This house has its own dock, and visitors spend hours on the water.”

Mercer maintained the house’s architectural footprint and other inherited features—beams, flooring, and windows—and chose a palette of charcoal and white for throughout the house, along with natural textures like petrified wood accessories, a driftwood feature wall, and stone mantels. She kept the existing slate flooring. “It keeps a feeling of flow, and it’s practical when you are coming in the house with wet feet,” she says. Other general touches include minimal window treatments and gray doors and molding. “I went for contrast,” Mercer says. “A lot of people do a light trim. I kept the moldings the same color throughout the house. It’s like the stitching in a piece of cloth.”

Mercer’s motto is “texture on texture,” which she lets play out in the light-flooded living and dining area. The space is dominated by wooden beams and two massive stone fireplaces—one on the far wall of the living area and one facing the dining area. “They are so dramatic and needed to stand alone,” she explains. She painted the ceilings’ rough-hewn cedar planks white to contrast with the dark beams. “It kind of hurt me to paint over that,” she admits, “but it came out nice and makes for a nice, clean background.” A custom light fixture from Michele Varian cantilevers over the dining table.

“It’s a moment for a bit of drama,” she says. “It’s evocative of the beams but doesn’t fight with them.”

Today, the living area is the family’s favorite part of the house, says Thompson. “It had wood paneling that wasn’t our taste. It was such a transformation,” she recalls. “We stayed away during construction and came in after the renovation and were like, ‘Wow!’ It felt like one of those remodel shows with a reveal. It’s dramatic, but not intimidating. It isn’t too pretty that you wouldn’t want to lie around. We watch movies and eat dinner and sit and talk. That was important to us, to be able to live life and not feel like we were at a hotel.”

The living room’s furnishings, with luxe Arteriors lamps, Homegoods baskets, and a Crate & Barrel rug, are “a bit of a high-low mix,” Mercer says. When it came to budgeting for 42

the furnishings, she says, “I gave as much bang for the buck as possible, picking pieces for maximum impact.” The couple bought the former owners’ dining table and added dining chairs from Wayfair. A custom couch with driftwood-like trim nods to the lakeside setting.

Originally, the house featured an upstairs, loft-style bedroom area that was open to the living area below, but Mercer added a wall to create a master suite and two smaller bedrooms. For the staircase, she replaced the original formal banisters and railing with a sleeker, tapered block version, which she painted charcoal. In the master bedroom, a large, nubby area rug adds softness to the slate. The owners kept the original bench niche, and Mercer reinforced it and recovered the cushion with Perennials fabric. “It makes a nice reading hangout,” she says. A Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams wall-hanging is positioned above the bed. In the guestroom, a Stikwood driftwood wall “brings the lake vibe in,” she says.

Back downstairs, the large TV screen is not a main focal point in the living room since this house is all about family.

“Hopefully, a guest can have a conversation with another person,” says Mercer. Instead, the TV is stored in a media cabinet, along with the audio equipment, because sometimes togetherness means binge-watching on a rainy day.

Designer Duo CREATING A PRIVATE PARADISE BRINGS A COUPLE CLOSER TOGETHER.

L

ife-partners Juergen Schuette and Stephan Szkotnicki both work in New York City’s fashion industry, but they’re creative opposites. While Schuette likes subtlety and tends toward monochrome, Szkotnicki prefers bright colors and lots of contrast. “For me, less is more,” says Schuette. “And for him, more is more.”

So when the couple bought a weekend house in Woodstock in 2013, combining their individual aesthetics presented a challenge. The 2,700-square-foot Colonial-style house, located on two overgrown acres, was built in 1971 and needed both a landscaping makeover and some interior redesign. “It was a place that was totally fresh and new for us,” Schuette admits.

“We decided to choose everything together and, as in every relationship, we ended up compromising. The property really represents how our relationship evolved together.”

Drawn to Woodstock by its “valley, mountains, reservoir, clean and healthy environment, and laid-back attitude,” the two searched the area for almost a year before finding the secluded property, tucked away in a patch of woods but still only a short distance from the village. Set back from the road and fronted by a bank of old-growth trees, the house already had many of the elements necessary to turn it into a private paradise. The backyard boasted a lagoon saline pool and hot tub, and inside, at the back of the house, was a large, contemporary chef’s kitchen, complete with custom wooden cabinetry, granite countertops, and a stainless-steel Wolf range, Subzero refrigerator, and Bosch dishwasher. facing three directions and featured a large, wood-paneled bathroom with a skylight and a tiled tub under a window overlooking the backyard. But while the house was appealing, it was also divided into many separate rooms, which kept the house dark.

Nonetheless, the couple was undeterred. As a designer for Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, Schuette specializes in seeing potential. “I’m in charge of bringing creations to life,” he says. “Whatever someone sketches or designs, I execute the pattern and make the fitting and everything else that results in the end product.”

Schuette and Szkotnicki decided to work from the outside in. They began by turning the property’s wild overgrowth into attractive, manageable grounds, which allowed more sunlight to shine inside the house. “I’m a big nature lover,” Schuette says. “My mandate was to do something sustainable and support the wildlife of the area with a pollinator garden that attracts and feeds bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.” He also understood the untapped value of the property. As a native of Hamburg, Germany, he had grown up frequently visiting his grandmother at her farm nearby, and, along with his extended family, helping plant and harvest fruit and vegetables as well as raise and slaughter chickens and pigs. “My grandmother fed the entire family from the farm,” he says.

After removing the overgrowth, Schuette planted a perennial garden along one side of the backyard, featuring multiple varieties of bleeding heart flowers, and built large raised beds near the pool, seeding them with native wildflowers that bloom from spring through autumn. upstate HOUSE

Szkotnicki then “pushed” Schuette to select trees and flowers for their textures as well as color, all the while keeping the plantings 95 percent native. “Texture is a huge factor for me, as well as the space around things; I love a pop of color as well,” says Szkotnicki, who designs for Fragments Jewelry and is a surrealist/impressionist artist and painter. Along the farthest edge of the yard, the couple added a large patch of ironweed to attract butterflies. “In the fall, when the Monarch butterflies migrate, they love to stop in our garden by the dozens and feed,” Schuette says. They built a 150-foot red cedar deer fence around the backyard’s perimeter to protect the plantings, along with a back entrance for maintenance vehicles and a small structure over the pool works to protect them from the elements.

Next, the two did some serious rock shopping. They chose quartzite imported from Utah for the 2,000-square-foot patio surrounding the pool, as well as the circular enclosure for an outdoor shower. “We love the quartzite because it never gets very hot; even on very sunny days you can walk barefoot over it,” says Schuette. “But what really surprised us is that when we have a full moon, the whole patio is illuminated by the moonlight.”

To anchor the landscaping with a variety of rocks, the couple bought 22 tons of stone in a range of types and sizes.

Szkotnicki designed the stonework laid throughout the gardens to integrate the stone waterfall along one edge of the pool, facing the house, along with a dry riverbed of stones at the back of the property. Boulders, laced through with quartz, are clustered throughout the property. To brighten up the entrance, the circular driveway is laid with white Connecticut 48

stone gravel, contrasting with the bluestone front steps that lead to the bright red front door.

Inside the house, Schuette and Szkotnicki took a similar collaborative approach. To create what Schuette calls “sunny solitude,” they removed a wall on the main floor to create one large living area reaching all the way from the front of the house to the back. At the home’s entrance, they left the original wood staircase intact, but enlarged the adjacent central hallway, creating a natural flow from the front entrance through the eat-in kitchen to a wall of glass sliding doors allowing access to the screened-in porch and patio. (Off the hallway are an additional bedroom and bathroom, which are used for guests.)

Throughout the house, windows have been replaced, with many of them enlarged to maximize views and light, including two bay windows in the living area, one with a window seat.

Upstairs, a wall was removed between the two guest bedrooms, creating one large space that Szkotnicki uses as a painting studio. “I just love working up here,” he says. “There is nothing to disturb you. It’s a great place to concentrate and just clear your mind.” His brightly colored paintings are hung throughout the house, providing a perfect compliment to Schuette’s selection of a neutral palette—with walls and trim painted gray, white, and brown—adding splashes of color to the light, airy home.

Schuette and Szkotnicki admit that they’re sad to sell the house, but a job relocation is taking them to Los Angeles.

However, their collaboration in creating a private mini-resort will stay with them. “We always make good compromises,” Schuette says.

Go with the Glow “DID YOU KNOW that every last neon Budweiser sign you’ve ever seen is hand-bent?” asks Lite Brite Neon founder Matt Dilling. In neon lighting, handbent glass tubing and noble gases (neon, argon, helium, xenon, and krypton) combine to create light in a variety of styles, from delicate firework filigree to an emphatic shout. At Lite Brite, with studios in Kingston as well as Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood, neon is created to illuminate industrial buildings; private residences; commercial venues like Bergdorf Goodman’s and Tiffany & Co.; publications like the New York Times, Print magazine, and Artforum; and seminal spaces in the world of contemporary art, including the Venice Biennale, Dia Center for the Arts, Whitney Museum of Art, and MoMa. An artists’ collective of 20 neon-shapers brings the concepts to life in light. “We have 20 to 40 projects going on at any given time,” says Dilling.

“Commercial work gives us more bandwidth for art-world fundraisers.”

“There’s work with [social practice installation artist] Theaster Gates out in Chicago, in the Stony Island Arts Bank, and with the Frankie Knuckles Vinyl Collection,” says Dilling. “There’s an artists’ edition that Polly Apfelbaum is working on for Byrdcliffe—did you know there were Bohemian glassblowers on Glasgow Turnpike before Byrdcliffe even existed? There’s another artists’ edition that Tschabalala Self is doing for Art Omi out in Ghent, and a rather large project with Glenn Ligon for the Musee d’Orsay.”

Besides fine art, Lite Brite creates architectural lighting, commercial signage, props, and displays of all sorts. “We specialize in fine art fabrication, but it runs the gamut, and so does the process,” says Dilling. “We work with all

kinds of artists and interior designers. One of the first projects I did was ‘Chez Max’ for over a cat’s bowl. Someone calls with an idea, one way or another we arrive at a design—it might be sketched on a napkin or a fully developed CAD file—and make full-size paper templates. Then we heat the glass tubing and shape it to the template. It’s very labor-intensive and there’s no shortcut.”

(With Lite Brite thriving, Dilling and fellow artist Erika DeVries, his professional and life partner, are also committed to giving back to the community. Their organization Cygnets Way, housed in the Lite Brite building, provides cross-disciplinary programming featuring local artists.)

Dilling can’t remember a time when he wasn’t drawn to electricity. “I asked my mom for a cake with a plug and an outlet for my fourth birthday,” he says.

When a high school art teacher told him about the neon workshops offered by sculptor Craig Kraft, he went to one and was immediately hooked. He started his own neon shop while still a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, officially founded his operation in Brooklyn in 1999, and moved production to a 15,000-square-foot factory in Midtown Kingston in 2017.

Artists who elect to bring their works to life in neon are after qualities that can’t be found in any other medium. “Our first piece with Glenn Ligon was taken from Gertrude Stein’s phrase, ‘the warm broad glow of negro sunshine,” says Dilling. “The front is black, with a warm broad glow around it; it’s striking.

It was at the Powerhouse in Toronto, it was in a retrospective of his work at the Whitney, and it sold at auction for $1 million. Neon is attention-getting; people have strong reactions to it. There’s a lot of power contained in light.”
