ike it or not, we are caught up in technology’s mad, headlong rush into the future, and as much as we embrace the ease and convenience technology brings, we sometimes resent its depersonalization of our lives. So, in reaction to that—or perhaps in spite of it—an interesting trend is shaping up: 21st-century design is becoming decidedly personal. Even as more goods are massproduced, custom-made goods are coming back, especially when it comes to home furnishings. The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, located on the SUNY New Paltz campus, is showcasing the movement toward handmade and one-of-a-kind objects in its current exhibit, “Made for You: New Directions in Contemporary Design.” The show runs until July 10 in the Dorsky’s Morgan Anderson and Corridor Galleries. “In an era of technology, when we can buy everything we want or need on the Internet, people like things unique,” says the exhibition’s curator, Jennifer Scanlan. “Each piece in this show has its own personality. Owning one is like having something that a friend made in your home.” About 20 artists have contributed to the exhibition’s array of handcrafted home goods, including: Atlas Industries, Sheila Bridges, Doug Bucci, Tom Burtonwood, Emily Cobb, Deborah Ehrlich, Sharan Elran, EyeBodega, Kieran Kinsella, Christopher Kurtz, LALOON, Malfatti Glass, Andrew Molleur, Nervous System, Michael Puryear, Kathy Ruttenberg, Courtney Starrett, Thornwillow Press, Joshua Vogel, and Jessica Wickham. Although Scanlan, who is based in Brooklyn, had no geographic perimeters in mind for the show, most of the featured designers wound up being from the Hudson Valley, which pleased her. Buying handmade goods, notes Scanlan, is “a great way to support local artists rather than chain stores like Restoration Hardware.” Standouts abound. Bearsville artist Kathy Ruttenberg’s The Mysterious Lagomorph, a chandelier composed of wooden branches and roots, ceramics, and glass, was created as a meditation on what her pet rabbits get up to at night; it hangs above Walked All Over, a rug bearing her self-portrait. Rosendale ceramicist and woodworker Kieran Kinsella’s organically shaped stools of reclaimed wood, which he calls “stumps,” feature wood grain, holes, and cracks as points of interest. There’s an entire wall of handmade wooden spoons by Josh Vogel, author of The Artful Wooden Spoon and owner of Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Company, and the subject of this issue’s “Back Porch” feature. A handle-free glass carafe by Brooklynbased Deborah Ehrlich was designed to fit into the palm of the user’s hand for Blue Hill restaurants in New York City and Pocantico Hills. Each piece leads to ruminations not only on the relationship between material and design but on the very concept of singularity. That’s especially true of 4

the work of ceramicist Sharan Elran, who has created a simple mold that, with a few permutations, can be used to make a unique vase for every person on the planet. In Malfatti Glassware’s installation,“Ideas meet functional dishware,” says Scanlan. "The work is fun and irregular—handcrafting means misshapen instead of Crate & Barrel regularity. You’re getting something that actually looks like it was made by a human being.” Conversely, though, she notes, “Just as people are interested in the craft processes of customization, they’re also looking at computer technology as a process for making very individual pieces.” Some of the show's most innovative objects were made possible with 3-D printing; the show includes designers demonstrating the use of a MakerBot 3-D printer on loan from the SUNY New Paltz Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center. Tom Burtonwood’s 3-D-printed Braille picture books form an interesting counterpoint to Thornwillow Press’s letterpress pieces. Two other 3-D-printed project designs relied on data. Red plastic bracelets, shaped like melted beads, are readings of the daily glucose levels of artist Doug Bucci, a diabetic; and huge, colorful plastic mats resembling 1950s Tupperware doilies, created by Courtney Starrett, graph gender inequality in America. Visitors can “read” the doilies through a smartphone app, which demonstrates that the technologically-produced can be individual as well as startlingly insightful. Honoring the Tree Spirit Andrew Hunter began his career as a master furniture maker through a self-imposed apprenticeship with a small collection of Japanese hand tools. In this way, he explored the woodworking traditions of Japan, China, and early America, spending over a year on blade sharpening alone. In Japanese Shinto tradition, he also learned how to merge his own spirit with those of the trees giving their lives to the pieces he builds. History in a Bottle The Hudson River flows both ways between the Atlantic and Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondacks, and for the past four centuries of the waterway’s trade and travel, the river has tumbled broken glass into tiny gemstones. A longtime resident of Kingston's Chestnut Street Historic District, Lowell Thing examines the rise of not one but two cities by looking at the ground beneath his feet, recalling the Native American concept of "vertical history." What layers underlie the present? Get Your Goats

E
xotic plants are invading New York State’s landscape, clogging woods and meadows with a new understory that’s not only inhospitable to native species but also provides the perfect conditions for Lyme disease-carrying ticks to thrive. Meanwhile, poison ivy, while native, is also increasing. So, no matter how thoroughly you check for ticks or scrub your skin after encountering poison ivy, simple outdoor activities like walking in the woods or mowing the lawn are becoming anxiety producing and even dangerous. Recent studies by the University of Connecticut found that forests infested with Japanese barberry had 12 times more deer ticks per acre than unspoiled forests. Scientists attribute the trend to climate change: Rising carbon dioxide levels cause invasive plants to grow bigger and faster, and poison ivy to have

higher levels of urushiol, the oil that causes an itchy allergic reaction. Fortunately, poison ivy and many other invasive plants are among goats’ favorite foods. “Poison ivy and Japanese knotweed are probably tied for [goats’] first choice, followed by multiflora rose and anything else with thorns,” says Larry Cihanek, who’s operated and operated Green Goats, a goat-powered vegetation-removal service in Red Hook, for 10 years. Goats are gaining popularity across the country as an eco-friendly, cost-effective way to clear land of unwanted plants. The critters are devouring kudzu down South; chowing down on the poison oak, thistle, and brambles that fuel forest fires out West; and gobbling up plants like poison ivy, Asiatic bittersweet, and buckthorn from parks and estates throughout the Northeast. and, here in the Hudson Valley, visitors and staff members alike enjoy watching Cihanek's goat herd dining out on Vanderbilt Mansion’s hard-to-access hilly slopes in Hyde Park and among Wilderstein Historic Site’s wooded areas in Rhinebeck. Hudson Valley homeowners are also taking advantage of goats to rid their yards and woods of noxious weeds. Jennifer and Eric DeCamp recently hired a herd of goats from Red Hook-based Hudson Valley Kinders and Critters to clear out an acre of wooded land that borders their Rhinebeck backyard. They chose goats to avoid having toxic chemicals around their young daughter or the sound of heavy machinery wreak havoc on her naps. “There was a ton of poison ivy and thorn bushes. Our baby was just starting to walk, and we wanted to be able to have her back there without having to worry about what she might be getting into,” says Jennifer DeCamp. After walking the DeCamps’ property to identify any shrubs, flowers, or trees that would need protecting, and to determine that there were no potential hazards for the goats, the owners of Hudson Valley Kinders and Kritters, husband and wife Stephanie Wyant and Paul Williams, arrived with a trailer carrying 10 goats they call Green Machines, and an acre of portable, flexible, solar-powered electric fencing. Wyant fenced in the goats out of reach of the shrubs the DeCamps wanted to preserve, and made sure there was access to shade and plenty of water to drink. The goats feasted on the poison ivy, barberry, and multiflora rose that were clogging the DeCamps’ forest understory. Wyant or Williams returned daily to check on the goats, refresh their water (goats are finicky when it comes to 14

their drinking water), and move them to a new, uncleared area. By the end of a week, the goats were full, and the woods were gloriously empty. “We’re really happy,” says DeCamp. “Everything we didn’t want is gone, and you can actually walk into the woods now. It looks like we have a lot more land because it’s so much more open.” In Hopewell Junction, Carolyn Ohlson hired 15 Green Machines goats to remove poison ivy, grapevines, Japanese barberry, and multiflora rose on her lightly wooded property. Ohlson says she enjoyed watching the goats and was “extremely satisfied” with them. “I'm hoping that if the goats come back again, they'll rid my land of Japanese barberry for good,” she says. “Everyone we work with puts the environment first,” says Wyant. “We’re never gonna be cheaper than a guy with a weed whacker, but our goats can go places he can’t, and they don’t pollute—the only thing they leave behind is great fertilizer.” In addition to these selling points, goats are undeniably entertaining. “It’s just fun to interact with them—they each have such distinct personalities,” says Wyant. One of the Green Machines is called Evel Knievil. “You can see right away that her main goal in life is to have fun,” she explains. It’s a rare and beautiful thing when everyone is happy, but that’s the case when it comes to goats grazing professionally: Homeowners get cleared land and lower tick populations, native species gain an edge, and the goats eat their favorite foods. Even the managers of the goat brigades seem to enjoy themselves. “It’s a happy way to make a living, and a happy way to be a goat—they just walk around and eat all year,” says Green Goats’ Larry Cihanek.

hinebeck is a dream town that retains its village atmosphere and charming Victorian architecture even while it grows and prospers. Thanks to its stringent zoning laws, the village has expanded its retail dramatically in the last decade or so without wrecking its historic character. Numerous restaurants; art galleries; fashion, home goods, and specialty shops; jewelers; salons; and yoga centers occupy the storefronts along Rhinebeck’s two main streets—Montgomery and Market, which meet beneath its only traffic light—seamlessly shifting from the 1880s to the tastefully new. And like Mary Poppins’s carpet bag, the village magically expands along its brick and bluestone walkways to reveal courtyards and lanes filled with yet more stores and eateries. As the jewel in the crown of the Hudson River National Historic Landmark District, the US mainland’s largest, Rhinebeck was settled in the early 18th century by Dutch and German immigrants, many of whom leased land from Colonel Henry Beekman, who owned thousands of acres that were originally part of patents granted by the English crown. tion there in 2010 helped make Rhinebeck a hot destination. The Hudson River Railroad’s arrival in 1851 enabled Rhinebeck to export produce, ice, and machinery to New York City and Albany, and allowed wealthy New Yorkers to commute to country retreats. Trains also ensured Rhinebeck’s reign, from the Civil War to the 1970s, as the world’s violet capital, the subject of the 2012 documentary Sweet Violets. In the 1890s, Rhinebeck’s millionaires donated a hospital, a library, and Ferncliff Forest Preserve. Such beneficence continues, most recently with the restoration of Wilderstein, once owned by Daisy Suckley, whose relationship with Franklin Delano Roosevelt was portrayed in the film Hyde Park on Hudson. THE SCENE Rhinebeck is a magnet for families, thanks to its quaint residential streets; wellrated schools; year-round farmers’ market; top-notch Starr Library, renovated in 2005; and Recreation Park, which includes a pool, tennis and basketball courts, and playing field. In town, Samuel’s Sweet Shop, bought last year by celebrity weekenders Paul Rudd and Jeffrey Morgan, is a charming gathering spot for all ages. Rhinecliff Amtrak train station allows easy commuting and attracts New

The village revs it up at holiday time, drawing crowds from throughout the Hudson Valley to its annual Sinterklaas Festival; a classic Memorial Day parade; and Fourth of July fireworks, but is otherwise quiet and peaceful, combining small-town charm with big-city amenities like independent bookstore Oblong Books, indie cinema Upstate Films, art galleries, a wine bar, and restaurants offering a wide array of cuisines. Events at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds draw crowds from throughout the Northeast. THE MARKET Houses in the village are in demand and tend to sell quickly. amed after a Revolutionary War general, the village of Montgomery is tucked into a bend of the Wallkill River in northern Orange County, and combines quaint charm and contemporary amenities: At least eight restaurants, cafés, and pubs are located within the two-and-a-half-block commercial center. Subject to oversight by a historic preservation board, the village appears to be caught in an early 20thcentury time warp, with many of its 19th-century buildings recently restored, ranging from Federal-style houses to white clapboard Greek Revivals to capacious Victorians. New development has replaced some of the surrounding farmland, but the farm-to-table movement is revitalizing interest in Montgomery’s rural roots as well as the village’s easy contemporary lifestyle. Montgomery grew up around a gristmill and bridge over the Wallkill River built by James Ward in the 1700s. The village school’s original 1818 brick building now houses the library and village hall. When the railroad arrived, farmers transported their produce and dairy products to New York, and the village thrived. A regal white clapboard Presbyterian church still presides atop Academy Hill; nearby is an 1832 pinnacled Methodist church, which houses the Montgomery Village Museum. Many of the village’s Victorian buildings were developed by master carpenter Chauncey Brooks, an avid Temperance advocate who arrived in the village in 1868.

THE SCENE Many of Montgomery’s residents commute to New York City or nearby Newburgh or Middletown, but more and more of them are opening businesses in town, like the Montgomery Book Exchange (owned by a former commuter to New Jersey whose wife recently founded Ms. Claire’s Montessori School), and the old-fashioned general store Late Bloomer, owned by a local farmer, which offers organic produce and locally produced foodstuffs. Iron Café is the local go-to for coffee; Eat This Bakery offers its fare on premises as well as nearby at Deja Vu Boutique; and Clinton Shops Antique Center sells stoneware, handmade footstools, and other artifacts from a bygone era. Historic Ward’s Bridge Inn is the restaurant of choice for special occasions. Copperfields Pub draws a crowd for its food and clubby atmosphere, and the restaurant and wine bar Wildfire Grill’s chef is winning kudos. Borland Brunch House, a bed-andbreakfast with an inviting porch, located in an 1839 house once owned by a congressman who helped build the Erie Canal, recently opened a restaurant and also offers farm-to-table cooking classes. The village is at its liveliest on General Montgomery Day, held on the first Saturday after Labor Day, and featuring a parade, a full day of local entertainment and classes, and fireworks. Montgomery has even had 15 minutes of international fame: In 1801, the “Montgomery Mastodon,” the

world’s first fully articulated prehistoric skeleton, was exhumed just outside of town; the site has been listed in the US National Register of Historic Places since 2009. THE MARKET It’s a great time to buy a house in Montgomery, since prices are still slightly down from the peak eight years ago. The 2015 median home price was $220,000, with no-frills, ranch-style houses priced at around $100,000 and fully restored Victorians selling in the low-to-mid $200,000s. Older houses are few and far between, but a cozy 1808 colonial, complete with fireplaces, lists at $249,000. Most properties are newly built on large lots outside the village; a 2,539-square-foot house, built in 2002, with an atrium, large, paned windows, and fireplaces, is priced at $349,000. Last year, a stunning 1790 brick Federal house in the village, with a plantation-style porch and parklike grounds, was listed for $388,000. The most unusual property currently on the market is the 5,772-square-foot Montgomery Grange, a white-clapboard historic building that’s priced at $269,000. On the downside, village property taxes are unusually high.

STARRING SUNLIGHT NATURAL LIGHT SHOWCASES AN INNOVATIVE HILLTOP HOME By Brian PJ Cronin | Photos by Roy Gumpel
T
rains don’t run through the historic district of Coleman Station anymore. The dairy farms tucked within this three-square-mile valley south of Millerton once supplied most of New York City’s milk. But the rail lines have been replaced by the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, and the remaining dairy farms now count among their neighbors a sheep farm, an upscale coffee roaster, and a curious house near Indian Lake that could be mistaken at first glance for another barn and silo. “There are a lot of nods to the historic architecture and barn architecture of the area,” explains architect and homeowner Larry Wente, “even though it’s a very modern house.” In the dining room, he reaches upward toward the dark timber beams, nine feet high. “Houses in this area from the 1700s tend to still have their original, small-scale timber frame,” he says. “I wanted to re-create that forced archaeology. So there’s a timber frame at the heart of the house. The wood was reclaimed from a barn nearby. It was the first thing that was built, just like a barn raising.” Wente, co-founder of the Manhattan architecture firm Gertler & Wente, and his partner, Jack Hyland, an author, investment banker, and board co-chair for Columbia University’s Teachers College, built the house in 2002 on a 40-acre lot. It’s been their weekend home ever since. (Previously, they spent 13 years living just down the road in a 1920s house.) Wente looked for inspiration from both local architecture and the land itself, noting how the mountains channel the winds and the quality of light changes throughout the seasons, before deciding how to maximize the property’s expansive views. Just like the area’s original barns, the house was built on a north/south axis to block out the biting northwest winds of winter and draw in the cooling southwest winds of summer. “That’s our airconditioning,” Wente says, pointing to the awning windows below the massive, southwestern solarium

windows that line the living room. “They draw in the air, just like the other traditional barns in the area do, and then exhaust upwards through the tower.” At the top of the 33-foot tower are several windows and a daybed. With three bedrooms; five bathrooms; and a one-bedroom, one-bath, 256-squarefoot guest cottage on the property, it’s rare that the tower gets used for sleeping. Instead it’s utilized as a reading nook and indoor treehouse by the couple’s grandchildren. Wente and Hyland have had as many as 18 people staying over at a time, however. “Amazingly, it didn’t feel crowded,” says Wente. The house is passively cooled entirely by wind, powered exclusively by a field of solar panels on the property’s northern edge, and heated by sunlight, fireplaces, and radiant heat. Its two fireplaces, on the sunporch and in the living room, are made of stone from a 400-year-old Connecticut quarry. The stones are laid in a manner recalling 18th-century Hudson Valley kilns. Salvaged stone and wood blend seamlessly with contemporary materials throughout the house, with the muted and natural colors soaking up the ambient light. Wente designed the 2,980-square-foot house and surrounding garden using multiples of four as an organizing principle, and for efficient construction waste management. “Most building materials come in four-by-eight-foot sheets, or four-foot increments of structural lumber,” he says. “This way, the
builders were using full sheets of plywood [and] sheetrock, and keeping the Dumpster empty.” Each room has windows in at least three directions, taking full advantage of the light. The light’s daily journey through the house is what Wente and Hyland enjoy most about it, along with the way the house flows into the gardens outside, and the stone walls and pavilion-style windows blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Maples, spruces, pines, and apple trees—all rescued from an abandoned farm nearby—surround the house, and in the summer, the grasses can reach 10 feet. But Wente admits to enjoying winter most of all. He likes looking out through the seemingly unframed pavilion-style windows at the frozen paths throughout the fields, the lonely benches no longer surrounded by walls of wildflowers that create outdoor rooms, the gnarled crabapple trees bereft of fruit, and the empty pool. In the summer, Wente and Hyland host outdoor parties for over 1,000 guests, and while the house has seduced more than a few visitors, Wente isn’t about to re-create it for anyone else. “Someone hired me and wanted me to build this exact house for them,” he recalls. “In the end, it was completely different. This house wouldn’t work anywhere else.” upstate HOUSE

It’s easy to miss A House in the Woods, but the homeowner likes it that way. Seventy-seven Norway spruce trees, spaced six feet apart, curve around the perimeter, extending from a 125-foot structural wall clad in weathered steel that shields the house from view. The homeowner wishes to remain anonymous, so we’ll call her Red, which is the color of her hair (more on that later). Red spent 25 years designing her dream house to be the antithesis of her frantic life as a corporate real estate lawyer in New York City. She chose the 8.5-acre plot of land at the base of the Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County based on the view, and the architect, William Wreue, based on his willingness to take
seriously her design, which she had drawn on a sheet of printer paper. Red’s house was Wreue’s first ground-up design under his own name, and from the get-go it was to be no ordinary house. First of all, Red wanted a curved house. “I can’t do a straight house,” Red explains. “Everybody has a straight house. I wanted an elegance that comes with a curve.” She also wanted a large, curved metal wall in front of it. “It was scary,” Wreue recalls, “because it was a really masculine thing. How do you straddle the masculine and feminine in everything? You have to.”

Wreue says he refined Red’s design from a value-driven perspective. “We design the best house for the person who comes to us,” he explains. “There’s a lot of time spent getting to know them, to understand them.” Red’s original design called for a passive-solar house with three separate wings (garage, master suite, and guest suite) connected by small breezeways. Wreue connected the three wings and adjusted the idea for a passive house. “The geometry of the house and the view, two primary design goals, were contradictory to a passive house,” he says. Mindful of Red’s passion for environmental stewardship, Wreue incorporated several green elements that enabled the house to be certified LEED Silver in 2013, including using FSC-certified materials for construction, installing a large submerged rainwater harvesting tank for irrigating the surrounding trees, a direct-exchange geothermal heating system, an energy recovery ventilator, and radiant floors. To maximize the house’s energy efficiency, Wreue also designed the enormous windows—65 feet long and 13 feet high—to have four layers of glass, air space, and suspended film sandwiched together in sustainable wood frames 28

by Duratherm. “In the middle of winter, when it’s really cold, you can stand next to the window and not feel any cold at all,” says Red. The house, which includes a wine cellar, master-suite Jacuzzi tub, sauna, walk-in closet, and fully functional guest suite, was designed to be nurturing and minimize stimulation. Smooth cabinets conceal from view the television, home office, refrigerator, pantry, and appliances. “That’s just how I live,” explains Red. “I don’t want to have clutter. I wanted clean lines.” The house’s exterior is a combination of Italian cement board and custom-cut bluestone. The Timberline walls are made of 14-inch-thick structural insulated panels (SIP) that insulate the house from cold and heat, as well as noise. And then there’s the wall. Standing 24 feet tall at its highest point and 21 feet at its lowest, it was constructed with SIP panels sandwiched between wood with Cor-Ten steel metal sheets attached. Wreue and Red accelerated the rusting process by spraying the sheets with a mixture of water, salt, and vinegar until it was the desired shade of red, similar to Red’s hair. “As a kid, I was always teased over my hair,” she explains. “My hair was a barrier between me and everybody else. For me, the wall is [symbolic of ] my initial position towards everything in life, which is: ‘Let me just see how this goes, and then I’ll open up.’” The overall effect of the 4,800-square-foot house’s uncluttered spaciousness, beautiful views, and quiet make it feel like a complete retreat from the world, which was Red’s goal. “I like the solitude and the privacy—this is why I built it,” she says. “Here it’s about recharging my batteries. If my dream in life is that I’m at peace with myself and my world, then here I feel that I get that.” For Wreue, working with Red was life changing, both professionally and personally. The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Westchester + Hudson Valley chapter selected A House in the Woods for its 2013 High Honors Design Award, and AIA New York State awarded it a 2014 Citation for Design. Wreue showcases A House in the Woods in presentations all over the world. He and Red also remain close friends. “This house is nothing without its owner,” says Wreue. “It’s a manifestation of her dream, and the best architecture is that which responds to something real.” 30

A
s marijuana gradually infiltrates American medicine, one of its cousins, hempcrete—a mixture of nonpsychoactive, industrial-grade hemp, natural lime, and water—could change the U.S. building industry. Former Wall Street analyst and Columbia County resident Jim Savage is so convinced of hempcrete’s benefits that he started a business promoting it. Savage discovered hempcrete while renovating his 1850s farmhouse in Stuyvesant. A plumber’s misstep led to substantial leaks in two rooms’ ceilings, one of which was insulated traditionally, the other with hempcrete. Savage’s insurance company promptly dispatched mold remediation specialists to evaluate the damage. While the traditional insulation was beyond repair, the hempcrete dried almost completely within a few days, leaving no permanent damage. It was as if it had “healed itself,” Savage recounts. “They’d never seen anything like this; they expected that they’d lose that ceiling as well.” Savage has been promoting hempcrete through his company, Green Built LLC, since 2012. He says the material has many benefits, not least of which
is that it prevents water damage, which is no small thing in the flood-prone Hudson Valley. Hempcrete’s name, however, is slightly misleading, as it doesn’t possess the load-bearing properties of concrete. Unlike concrete, hempcrete “breathes,” allowing moisture to pass through and prevent saturation. As insulation, hempcrete reduces indoor humidity in the summer and retains it in the winter, reducing the cost of running an air conditioner or furnace. The use of lime in hempcrete also makes it virtually fireproof, eliminates the need for added chemicals, and raises the material’s pH to levels intolerable to mold, insects, and rodents. Plus, Savage notes, hempcrete is so natural it can literally break down into mulch, thereby reducing toxins in the home. Traditional insulation is rife with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxic chemicals. Savage believes hempcrete’s usage improves air quality, potentially alleviating illnesses like asthma and “sick building syndrome.” “I look at spray foam and think, boy, am I glad I don’t have that in my house,”

When marijuana was outlawed in 1938, so was hemp. But today’s hemp activists contend that while industrial hemp and marijuana may be of the same species, they have as much in common as a Great Dane and a dachshund. Industrial hemp contains no more than 0.3 percent THC (marijuana’s principal psychoactive agent), while recreational and medicinal strains of marijuana contain 5 to 10 percent. “You could smoke a telephone pole’s worth of our stuff and still not get high,” Minneapolis, Minnesota, hempcrete producer Ken Anderson recently told the New York Times. France and England never criminalized hemp, and the use of hemp in construction in both countries has been rising since the 1980s. In fact, English building insurers provide a discount for the use of hempcrete because of 34

its durability. Hempcrete was even used in The Prince’s Natural House, an eco-friendly demonstration home built in Great Britain by HRH the Prince of Wales’s Prince’s Foundation for Building Community. Here in the United States, hemp advocates like Susie Cody, director of the New York Hemp Industries Association, are campaigning for the deregulation of hemp in domestic production. Cody believes domestic hemp production could boost the state’s local economies. The hemp plant grows almost a foot a week during its lifecycle, so enough hempcrete for a 1,500-square-foot house could be produced on a few acres in one growing season, and New York State has the perfect conditions for cultivation. Plus, says Cody, “hemp is a good rotational crop. It breaks up chemicals in the soil [and requires] no pesticides or fertilizers.” Hemp has a multitude of other potential applications. “It’s the strongest fiber of any plant material. Anything that is made out of plastic can be made out of hemp,” says Cody. Hemp is already being used in clothing, manufactured goods, and even cars (BMW’s i3’s door panels contain a hemp polymer to save weight). Because hemp absorbs carbon during its life cycle, offsetting transportation-produced pollution through its cultivation would actually make many hemp products carbon negative. Because hemp must be imported from Europe and Canada, it’s currently significantly costlier than traditional insulation, with hempcrete priced at about $7 per square foot compared to $1 per square foot for traditional insulation. Local production, says Cody, would drastically reduce that gap. Cody believes hemp could become New York State’s new cash crop, which would be a boon to local farmers. As marijuana becomes decriminalized and even legalized in the U.S., both she and Savage are hopeful that local hemp production is not far off. In January, New York State opened its first eight legal medical marijuana dispensaries, a sure step toward legalization. In anticipation, Green Built LLC has several projects in the works to promote the use of hempcrete in construction. This spring, Savage plans to construct a 400-square-foot, passive-energy tiny house utilizing hempcrete to serve as a prototype for future production of modular hempcrete stand-alone structures and home additions. He’s also designing structural insulated panels (SIPs) using hempcrete to replace traditional materials. “By using homegrown materials that are grown by neighbors rather than mined out of the ground,” says Savage, “we can build homes that are nontoxic and carbon sequestering, provide comfort, and are resilient.”

T
he owners of this Woodstock home call it their Eden, and it’s easy to see why. For starters, the house has played a crucial role in shaping its homeowners’ lives. For a decade, its quiet, secure setting at the end of a private road helped the homeowners, an artist and her husband, a best-selling writer and the creator/producer of a new cable TV series, nurture their talents. (In fact, it is because of the writer’s new West Coast cable TV venture that the couple has put the house on the market.) Here, within the couple’s Eden, their Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs cavort, and their active boys,
ages six and 11, hike, ride dirt bikes, swim, and simply spend time outdoors. “The view is great,” says the writer. “That’s unusual in the Catskills—when you’re in the mountains, often you cannot see the mountains—but we can.” The five-acre property backs up to thousands of acres of forever-wild land. “We’ll stand out on the deck and say good night to the moon and the stars,” he adds. “We still feel awe and amazement.” A heated saltwater pool, surrounded by a vegetable garden, was the first thing the couple added when they began a complete overhaul of the property

The house invites simple pleasures. Library shelves throughout the great room, accessible by a rolling ladder, are well stocked with books. in 2005. “One summer a squash plant grew up the umbrella base,” the writer recalls. The bulk of their focus, however, was on updating what was a plainJane house, a 2,410-square-foot split-level built in 1982. The renovation remains fresh 10 years later, thanks to what the writer calls his “crazy anal” design-forward approach. Rustic elements like hand-hewn barn beams, wideplank floors, and a soapstone woodstove balance with sleek, contemporary finishes, including a Japanese soaking tub, stainless-steel appliances, and steelcable staircase railings. New casement windows and the addition of sliders changed the appearance of the house, which has four bedrooms and two and a half baths. The postand-beam great room has 20-foot-high ceilings, and its two walls of expansive windows, letting in abundant light, framing remarkable vistas of mountains and sky, and providing a front-row seat to changing weather. “We feel like we’re in a snow globe on a winter’s day,” says the writer. The house invites other simple pleasures, too. Library shelves throughout the great room, accessible by a rolling ladder, are well stocked with books. The cook’s kitchen is large enough for friends and family to gather comfortably. The master bedroom suite overlooking the pool opens to an upper deck for entertaining or solitary lounging. On the lower level, the screened-in indoor-outdoor room is large enough for dinner parties. Less visible but equally important upgrades to the house include new utilities, ductless airconditioning, radiant heat, and an automatic whole-house generator. Being surrounded by so much nature has led to many magical moments for this young family. “We’re totally in love with this house,” says the writer. “You can’t hear a thing, can’t see a neighbor, yet I can ride my bike to my office in town in 15 minutes. If I could, I would add a rider to the purchase agreement for the new owner that requires them to have a dog.” 38

Halter Associates Realty’s principal broker, Lisa Halter, describes real estate as “an obsession” from which she hopes never to recover. Halter and her husband and business partner, Paul Schmalz, are both former award-winning art directors with New York City-based Propellor Design Inc. , which they founded in 1996. Preserving the Grain In conversation, it’s sometimes hard to tell if Kingston woodworker Josh Vogel is talking about woodworking or philosophy. His contemplative nature is reflected in the pieces he creates through his company, Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Company, founded in 2010 after Vogel moved upstate from New York City. Housed in an antique brick building, Blackcreek creates sculptures; furniture; kitchenware, including cutting boards and spoons; and cuttingboard oil made with natural ingredients right in the shop. For Vogel, woodworking is about cultivating a relationship with the material. Using locally sourced wood, Vogel endeavors to enhance rather than shape wood’s natural grains and textures. “We’re interested in the most knotty part of a tree,” he says, because that’s where you’ll find the most personality. “The

anomaly becomes a part of the larger shape,” he says, and a creator’s “personality is literally transferred onto the product.” Vogel’s passion for “finding the line between the utilitarian and sculpture” is best expressed in the 365 spoons he carved— one a day, for a year—and catalogued as the 365 Kitchen Tools Collection in his new book, The Artful Wooden Spoon: How to Make Exquisite Keepsakes for the Kitchen (Chronicle Books, 2015). “Every day,” he recalls, “I would devote time to making one of these spoons,” asking “where is the line between the spoons and sculpture?” The spoons are all different—some huge, others sized to hold a pinch of salt; some sanded, others stained—but each is hewn like a love sonnet written to the wood from which it was carved.—Peter D.
