The 2019 opening of the Palmetto Trail at Stumphouse Mountain will create opportunity for both an improved quality of life for our citizens as well as a positive economic impact created through the hiking and premiere mountain biking the trail will bring. Our close proximity to Clemson University and the new Oconee Campus of Tri County Technical College offers you, the reader, a wide range of opportunities. INFORMATION The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is an association of businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals working together to better the business climate in Oconee County, South Carolina. For more than a century, the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce has been in the center of our community’s business growth and development. Founded in 1906, the Chamber has fostered creative ideas in developing our community both culturally and economically. The Chamber offers three locations to serve the community better. CITIES & TOWNS SENECA City Hall: 221 E North 1st St., Seneca, SC 29678 (864) 885-2700 Seneca, the largest city in Oconee County, was founded in 1874. Early development of the city revolved around textiles making, Seneca a marketing and shipping point for cotton. Today, Seneca is better known for its downtown historic district centered around Ram Cat Alley, along with shopping, dining and lodging opportunities. Somewhere between studying the historic 19th century architecture and choosing from the abundance of recreational opportunities, tourists and residents alike will have no problem finding their place in Seneca. WALHALLA City Hall: 206 N Church St., Walhalla, SC (864) 638-4343 Walhalla was founded in 1850 as a land expansion by German Settlers out of Charleston, South Carolina. It is the County Seat.. The area’s history is shown through 8 • www.oconeechambersc.org

the historic churches, home and museums scattered around town. Approximately 4300 citizens call Walhalla home. The tree lined Main Street has a number of antique and specialty shops, as well as a variety of restaurants. Walhalla’s culture is celebrated every year with Oktoberfest and Mayfest. Walhalla’s history and legends continue at Issaqueena Falls and Stumphouse Tunnel located just a few minutes from downtown. Come to Walhalla. Enjoy a town that celebrates the past and embraces the present.

WESTMINSTER City Hall: 100 E Windsor St., Westminster, SC (864) 647-3212 Chartered in 1875 the City of Westminster has a Mayor/Council form of government. The City provides complete municipal services and utilities to its approximately 2,700 residents. A treasure trove of unique architecture, Westminster boasts more than one hundred homes that are unique to the late 1800’s and turn-of-the-century. Our residential and business historical districts offer a visual smorgasbord for the sightseer along our Crape Myrtle-lined streets. Westminster is the home of the South Carolina Apple Festival.

Oconee is steeped in rich heritage and tradition. Originally a Cherokee nation, General Andrew Pickens and Colonel Benjamin Cleveland founded and negotiated the territory for the fledgling colony, finally settling in Cheohee Valley near the present-day Tamassee community. From 1800 until 1814, Oconee was a part of Pendleton District and in 1826, this District was divided into Anderson and Pickens Districts. During Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Pickens County was split in half with the western half named Oconee in 1868. An influx of German immigrants, who had found Charleston unwelcoming and difficult to succeed in, brought fresh blood into the mountains with the founding of Walhalla in 1850. Railroads brought more towns into the predominantly rural county, with the founding of Seneca at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Railroad and the Air Line Railroad in 1874. Westminster was founded in 1875 at a water stop on the Southern Railway.

{ LIFESTYLE } SALEM City Hall: 5A Park Avenue Salem, SC 29676 (864) 944-2819 Originally established as a lumber town, Salem is located on Scenic Highway 11 which is abundant with beautiful views of Oconee County’s landscape. Salem is also popular for its luxurious residential neighborhoods and golf courses. Tamassee is a small community located just outside of Salem. The two communities are often referred to as Tamassee-Salem.

FAIRPLAY

Fairplay is an unincorporated census designated place (CDP) located on I-85 in the southern area of the county and is accessible via exits 2 and 4. The Fairplay Welcome Center serves as a gathering

place for community events and provides free information and services for tourists and new residents of South Carolina.

LONG CREEK

Long Creek is an unincorporated community located in the far west corner of the county. Long Creek is known for its fruit orchards, rafting adventures, and scenic views.

WEST UNION Town Hall: 1442 W Main Street West Union, SC 29696 West Union is located next to Walhalla and was incorporated in 1880. People from all over Oconee county travel to West Union to shop for hidden gems in its retail and antique stores.

Some have found the county by chance, through a visit or a vacation, while others have sought out a retirement location through research before choosing Oconee. Located at Oconee Nuclear Station in Seneca, S.C., the center opened in July 1969, when Oconee Nuclear Station was under construction. The World of Energy is the longest continually operating nuclear visitors center on the planet. Whether you are looking to fill an hour or spend an entire afternoon, the World of Energy engages you with informative exhibits and displays. Begin with a tour of our new educational exhibits inside and outside. Pack a picnic and enjoy nature on the grounds. The Story of Energy offers fun and interactive ways to learn about electricity. Visitors of all ages will discover how energy is made from water and uranium, as well as wind and solar. Kayaking on Landings throughout the county Lake Jocasee give access to lake fishing to even the smallest water craft and the Oconee lakes are even home to large fishing tournaments including a 150 boats at the 2016 Fishers of Men in Lake Keowee. If a faster, more intense ride on the water peaks your interest, the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River may be more your style. Guided rafting tours are available on this river, which was the site used for the filming of the 1970s movie “Deliverance.” The guide-led rides take the adventure seeker through rapids that reach Class V status.

{ LIFESTYLE } The addition of the scenic Palmetto Trail, South Carolina’s premier hiking and mountain biking pathway that extends from the mountains to the sea will soon be a reality in Oconee. Before the extension into Walhalla, the trail ended at Oconee Station Historic Site but once complete, the Trail will add about 16 miles to the mountain end providing both biking and hiking opportunities. Prominent on the new passage is Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park, home to the historic pre-Civil War railroad tunnel to nowhere and the beautiful Issaqueena Falls. There’s much anticipation for a completed trail in 2019. For those who prefer to enjoy history and heritage, there are a variety of offerings including The S.C. Museum of the Cherokee, the Oconee Heritage Center, Patriot’s Hall, the Lunney House Museum, and the Bertha Lee Strickland Museum. Many communities also boast memorials to honor the sacrifices of military veterans.

OCONEE MUSEUMS

As it celebrates its 150th birthday in 2018, Oconee County is rich in history even as it looks ahead to the future. Local museums offer a variety of ways for residents and visitors to see different aspects of that history.

OCONEE HERITAGE CENTER

The Oconee Heritage Center offers a free, self-guided tour through the history and ever-changing culture of Oconee County. Started in 2004, in Walhalla, the museum branched out to Westminster in 2011 with the General Store Museum. The Heritage Center, located at 123 Brown’s Square Drive, includes the area’s history of Native Americans, railroads, textile mills, agriculture and more, all curated from local families and discoveries. Popular features include the 200-plus -year-old dugout canoes and the Stumphouse Tunnel exhibit, as well as a children’s corner for a more hands-on experience for little ones. The General Store Museum is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. and includes original artifacts from the former England’s General Merchandise. Located at 126 E. Main Street in Westminster, the branch location also features exhibits and information on the history of the greater Westminster area. THE LUNNEY HOUSE

The Lunney House in Seneca, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1909 by Dr. W.J. and Mrs. Lilian Mason Lunney and occupied continuously by the Lunney family until 1969. The historic home is now the Lunney House Museum featuring a collection of Victorian furniture as well as historic memorabilia from Oconee County. The arts and crafts interior has art glass windows, original chandeliers, long-leaf pine woodwork and quarter-sawn wood mantel, English fireplace tiles, flat panel wainscot with burlap inserts, and a 1866 Chickering and Sons “cocked hat” parlor grand piano that is a permanent exhibit. BERTHA LEE STRICKLAND CULTURAL MUSEUM

The Bertha Lee Strickland Museum opened in February 2016 and focuses on the history, culture and contributions of the local AfricanAmerican community. The city-funded museum is currently showing the exhibit Segregation – Integration – Assimilation. Museum manager Shelby Henderson said the museum is “one of a kind” since it’s the only exhibit museum in Oconee County. Henderson said the museum has a strong focus on education and preserving and sharing the local African-American story. Museum staff is combing through and archiving a collection of 5,000 pieces from the collection of the late local historian Louise Matheson Bell. Bertha Lee Strickland Cultural Museum, located at 208 West South 2nd Street in Seneca, is open Tuesday-Saturday at 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and closed Saturday-Sunday. MUSEUM OF THE CHEROKEE IN SOUTH CAROLINA

The Museum of the Cherokee in South Carolina has been open for five years giving residents and visitors a glimpse of life for Native Americans in Oconee County and the Upstate. Curator Luther Lyle said the museum, located in Walhalla across from the Oconee County Courthouse, began with just two rooms before the county donated a building next door. That building’s renovation is nearly completed. A variety of exhibits and artifacts are on display with personal collections donated to the museum. “Everything we have has been donated,” Lyle said. “We have a really large research library. If we need an artifact that we don’t have, we have people that we can call on.” The museum closed a deal on the purchase of the Oconee Town site,” Lyles said. PATRIOT’S HALL VETERANS MUSEUM

The Patriot’s Hall Veterans Museum was established to honor the approximately 8,000 Oconee County veterans, representing one in three families in the county, according to the museum’s website. The museum offers an opportunity for residents and visitors to see how veterans have contributed and sacrificed for their country, the world and freedom. The museum, located in Walhalla at 13 Short Street near the county courthouse, has a variety of exhibits including one honoring Marine Staff Sgt. Lewis G. Watkins, the only Oconee County recipient of the Medal of Honor. The medal is on exhibit at the museum. Watkins was killed in action on Oct. 7, 1952. The two floors of the museum have been renovated with artifacts and displays that begin with the Revolutionary War and include the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Persian Gulf as well as more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is also a library with books available for check out. There are also personal stories of Oconee veterans throughout the museum. conee County is continuing to show growth in bringing new industry and business development into the county and with it millions of dollars in investment and hundreds of new jobs. In 2017, expansions of six existing companies along with the addition of two announcements of new business and industry locating into Oconee County accounted for more than $153 million in investment in the county, according to Richard Blackwell, executive director of the Oconee Economic Alliance. Two other new companies announced plans to locate in Oconee in the first months of 2018. That combined with a $3.8 million investment by an existing industry brings the total investment in the first four months of 2018 to $49.4 million and 62 new jobs. And more is expected in the coming year. Baxter Enterprises and Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering, sister companies owned by the Schulte family and full-service suppliers for the plastics industry, are established operations in Oconee County. At that time, the firms planned an investment of $20.7 million in the project, creating 87 new jobs over the next five years. They already have 70 employees.

EDUCATION IN OCONEE

he School District of Oconee County enjoys high-quality, dedicated teachers, hard-working students and a supportive community. The district’s mission is to “partner with families to develop responsible, productive citizens who are life-long learners.” The goal is to prepare students for a future beyond the classroom through educational experiences and extracurricular activities as well as by leveraging well-developed industry partnerships.

High schools and middle schools provide many extracurricular options for SDOC students, including JROTC, FFA and other organized activities that suit various interests. The district has also long been recognized for its quality arts and music programs at all levels. Various sporting activities continue to amass awards at the local, regional, state and national levels as well. Several new instructional initiatives and recognitions this year indicate that SDOC is establishing a reputation across

the state for being a quality district, determined to provide the best education possible to its students. In fact, one of the district’s three high schools was recently named 2017 Palmetto’s Finest High School. New initiatives include a district-wide implementation of foreign-language instruction at all elementary schools. SDOC participates in a program that provides two Chinese teachers to the Seneca area schools for minimal cost. This year,

{ EDUCATION } various Spanish programs were offered throughout the district as well. In the 2016-17 school year, one elementary school piloted Rosetta Stone software, offering students the option of learning French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese or Japanese. The experiment was a success and the district was able to work with the company to secure site licenses that will provide all elementary students with access to the software next year for a fraction of typical cost. SDOC will be the first district nationwide to do so. The School District of Oconee County recognizes that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) is the future of our country and provides the best career options for SDOC students. Because of this, the district has made a concerted effort to provide STEM educational opportunities for all students. Teachers re-

ceive STEM trainings in order to better provide hands-on learning activities for students. To help provide these experiences, the district applied for, and received, a grant for 3-D technology called Z-space. This technology allows students to manipulate abstract variables in 3-D to enhance learning.

To better disseminate STEM information, SDOC elementary schools often hold STEM nights. These evenings provide opportunities for students to interact with their families around STEM topics and activities. The nights are very successful and typically draw hundreds of participants.

{ EDUCATION } Also, the 2016-17 school year was the first year the district implemented the NOW (Nurturing Oconee’s Workforce) program in collaboration with the Oconee Economic Alliance, Hamilton Career Center, and local industry partners. The program was created to ensure students enter the workforce ready and marketable to employers. Participation in the program will also provide students an employment advantage over their classmates. The program will continue and expand in 20117-18. The school board’s goal is that SDOC rank in the top 10 districts in the state

of South Carolina. Toward this end, The School District of Oconee County continues to identify and implement best prac-

tices that assist in providing exemplary instruction for all students in a safe learning environment. The School District of Oconee County had an average of 10,300 students enrolled in 2016-17. The district has 16 regular schools and three special-focus schools, like Adult Education and the Hamilton Career Center. About 1,500 employees work for the district, making it the second largest employer in Oconee County, behind Duke Energy. The county is also home to Oconee Christian Academy, a faith-based K-12 school that opened its doors in 1993.

TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL COLLEGE OCONEE CAMPUS Tri-County Technical College, a public two-year community and technical college serving Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties in South Carolina, enrolls more than 9,000 students annually and offers more than 70 major fields of study, including computer technology, industrial electronics, mechatronics, nursing, and university transfer programs. Tri-County boasts the highest student success rate among two-year colleges in the South Carolina and ranks in the top 5 percent nationally for successful student transfers to fouryear colleges and universities. A great investment of student and taxpayer dollars, TriCounty offers a three-to-one return on every dollar spent on education and training, and graduates of its technical programs are in great demand for jobs by advanced manufacturing companies in the region. In the fall of 2018, Tri-County will open a new campus in Oconee County, located at the Industry and Technology Park on Highway 11 in Westminster. The campus will offer programs to support local manufacturing, including the first year of CNC Programming and Operations; Industrial Electronics; Manufacturing Management & Leadership; Mechatronics; and Business Administration with an emphasis in Operations Management. Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university can choose from a variety of University Transfer courses at the Oconee Campus and continuing education class-

High school juniors and seniors have the opportunity to earn college credit through dual enrollment in University Transfer classes or Technical Career Pathway programs in engineering and industrial technology majors at the new Oconee Campus and other Tri-County Campus. Tuition is the lowest in the area and nearly eighty percent of students receive some form of free financial aid, including Pell Grants, Lottery Tuition Assistance, LIFE scholarships, and Foundation scholarships.
