ince people from every state in the Union have been married at Magnolia Manor Bed & Breakfast in Westminster, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the phrase “I do” has rubbed off on the manor’s owners, Glenn and JoAnn Blake.

Recently, that “commitment by association” virtue exemplified itself when the Blakes purposely said “I do” to all local contractors for a major expansion and renovation project.

“Before we decided to go ahead with renovations and upgrades we knew we would be hiring all local contractors.” said JoAnn, “J. Davis Construction, Landscape Perfection, M&K Construction, Burchfield Welding and Machine Shop, and Duncan’s Tree Service are local heroes to me.

“They’d all put in a long, hard week, and then go the extra mile to clean up the site for the weekend for my wedding couples and their families,” she added. “And, then they would graciously pull everything back out on Monday morning to continue the project. Beyond the exceptional work they did, they also cared about the work that we do here at the Manor.”

“From Joel Davis and Tim Winchester and their building crew, to landscape artist Sandy Brockington, to Jeff Frederick and Jim Lynch and their landscapers, to Mike King and his concrete men, to Tommy Smith at the welding shop and Sam Duncan in the trees, every one of them exceeded our expectations while not exceeding

our budget,” Glenn added.

“Small business folks have to stick together,” JoAnn said.

The result of the local collaboration was a 30 x 60-foot pavilion with a unique overlook, providing awesome views from under a peaked roof, while surrounded by white pillars, handsome stone walls, walkways and an exceptional courtyard, all adjacent to the 3,000-square foot banquet hall.

“At the end of every day, I was so heartened by the character of these men and how well they worked together,” JoAnn said. “They are simply exceptional people and professionals.”

The Blakes and their sons, Eric and Ryan, purchased the six-acre property and manor house in the summer of 2007 as a family-run business.

Continuing with renovations undertaken by the previous owners, they converted the Manor into the elegant Bed & Breakfast and event center it is today.

With the help of Eric and Ryan and Glenn’s brother, Gary, the Blakes offer five distinctive guest rooms with fireplaces, satellite television and private baths.

But, realizing there was potential beyond a traditional B&B, the family has also developed the property as a venue for all-inclusive weddings (now 35-40 per year) and private celebrations, special events and class reunions. The Blakes also host dinner theater nights throughout the year and open the formal dining rooms to the public for dining on Christmas Day and Mother’s Day. Completion of the new pavilion rep-

Manor History Magnolia Manor was built in 1897 by W.R. Anderson.

Mr. Anderson owned one of the first cars in town, and his youngest son, John, remembers this as a concern since his father could not turn his head and would have to back the car up with hopes that he would not hit anything.

The concern was addressed by placing large fence posts to guide him out the driveway.

With the Great Depression, the family moved to Cashiers, NC and then on to Clearwater, FL, where Anderson started a drug store business that eventually grew into Eckerd Drugs.

Many families have owned the home since, and it has also been used as an apartment house and even as a chicken hatchery for a time.

Around 1944, the Pruitt family, who owned a car dealership in town, purchased the home.

Their only daughter, Joan, has visited since the Blakes acquired ownership and enjoyed walking the property, telling stories of her days here at the Manor. One story explains why her name and “1948” are written in the cement in front of the garage. That was the year she took out the center pole of the garage on one of her first days of learning to drive.

Known as “Dr. Kuemmerer’s home” in recent years, Ilene and Steve Sendy purchased the property from his estate in 1996 and began a total renovation of the 19-room Manor, an effort that was completed after Glenn and JoAnn Blake purchased the property in 2007.

“We can now offer a most awesome ‘rain plan’ as well,” JoAnn said.

With the addition of the pavilion, courtyard and enhanced views of the property — with some of the oldest Oak trees in Oconee County — Magnolia Manor has become one of the finest venues for outdoor weddings in the Upstate. But, the Blakes’ desire to achieve that status hasn’t been confined to the outdoors.

While maintaining the five main suites of the B&B, they have renovated other rooms to accommodate brides and bridesmaids before the wed-

ding; converted a porch into a room for photographing flower girls and ringbearers; enhanced “Grandma’s and Grandpa’s Corners,” where generational photos can be taken; and turned a former storage room into an area where entire families can gather prior to the ceremony, which is across the hall from the bride’s dressing room.

Additionally, JoAnn has converted another area of the Manor into an exten-

sive wedding design center. Here, brides can choose from a colorful array of reception settings, selecting everything from the dishes and linens to vases and florals.

hen you think Tennessee, you may think Nashville, the home of country music and a popular ABC television series. Or, you may think Memphis and Elvis and the Blues.

If Knoxville does come to mind, your thoughts probably turn to football or women’s basketball. Or maybe it’s just that place a couple of hours past The Biltmore.

Nestled along the Tennessee River at the western base of the Smoky Mountains, Knoxville is always a few degrees cooler than Upstate South Carolina. In recent years, however, that “coolness” has taken on a whole new meaning.

“Knoxville has a voice, and people are just starting to let that voice be heard,” said Erin Donovan, communications director for Visit Knoxville, whose job of promoting the city is, by her own admission, getting easier every day.

“It’s easy to sell Knoxville,” she said. “It’s really becoming quite cosmopolitan. People meander around and hang out at Market Square. There’s an evolution taking place.”

Since evolutions take time, Knoxville’s emergence onto the national stage may be more like a revolution.

Sure, there was a World’s Fair here in 1982 but, for a century before that, the city was isolated and introverted. Even in the era when people — rich and poor — traveled by train, Knoxville slipped to the side as railway experts found faster southern routes to the east.

Likewise, the gleam from the Fair’s Sunsphere was quickly clouded and the city fell back into a role as a quaint Southern city where folks could opt to catch I-40 west or I-75 to sunny beaches of Florida.

Donovan pegs 2005 as the year the city and private developers began to change Knoxville’s destiny. Since then, the city’s urban development has been like a boulder rolling down

The city of Knoxville and its tourism arm, Visit Knoxville, host countless events along the riverfront. And, even if no event is happening during your visit, you can still cruise the river, enjoy a cocktail while overlooking the river or take a short walk along the city’s enhanced waterfront.

old Rocky Top … unstoppable. Today, the city is not only attracting more and more permanent residents, but it is stamping itself as a tourist destination.

“We really are the hidden gem of the South,” Donovan said.

“We’re a small city with a big city feel.”

Knoxville’s western suburbs are a popular place to live, but the popularity of downtown cannot be ignored. Secondstory residences above historic buildings sell as quickly as developers can get permits, and the fingers of the core city are reaching out to create communities that now have names — SoKno to the south and NoKno to the north. Happy Holler wasn’t so happy all that long ago. Now it boasts a theater, three craft breweries, a honky-tonk and a few blocks of vintage stores that tourists can’t get enough of.

Two years ago, at the urging of developers, the city rehabbed the 100 block of Gay Street, stretching the downtown area a few blocks north. Today, every storefront is filled. It’s one of the hottest dining areas in town, and the limits are being pushed again as a popular urban winery just opened in the historic Southern Railway Station right across the tracks.

Market Square, where gunslingers frequently shot it out and where two armies stored munitions during the Civil War, is the hub around which the downtown turns. A host of unique eateries and specialty shops lines the square. Buskers work the area during the day and each evening free entertainment takes to the stage.

There are shady park areas, a fountain for children to play in, street cafes and a rooftop bar.

The city has hotels of every size and variety. There is a Hilton, a Holiday Inn and more. Just off the square is The Oliver, a boutique hotel with reasonable rates, great service and bike rentals. Just off the lobby is a sliding door behind which hides 14 • UPSTATE LAKE LIVING

the Peter Kern Library, a not-so-well-kept secret that has “speakeasy” written all over it.

One block over from Market Square is Gay Street, home to the restored Tennessee Theater, home to a series of Broadway productions each year. To the south is the historic Bijou, a Civil War era hotel that the Union army used as a hospital. Today it hosts smaller theatrical productions.

The city is rich with history. Museums dot the terrain, focusing visitors on art, history, culture and science. The Blount Mansion is open for public tours, showcasing the home of William Blount, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first governor of the Southwest Territory.

Self-guided tours of the city focus on facets of the Civil War, and guided tours range from musical history to things that go bump in the night.

When it comes to cuisine, Donovan is quick to note, “It’s not all barbecue.”

“Oh, we have delicious barbecue,” she said, “but it’s 2014. We have everything from steakhouses to Southern chains such as Tupelo Honey, to Lenny’s Submarine Shop. And, of course, Market Square has all kinds of food like Tomato Head, and Chesapeake’s has great crab cakes.

Visit Knoxville is the organizer of a variety of festivals and events in the city and even hosts the daily Blue Plate Special — an hour-long free concert — in the lobby of its Gay Street headquarters. The long overlooked arts culture of East Tennessee is brought to life at the Knoxville Museum of Art, and the city boasts a nationally known opera, a symphony and a jazz orchestra.

Much of what Knoxville offers visitors is walkable from any of the hotels.

You can also rent bikes, take a free trolley or hike the greenway, which, happens to be the gateway to something truly unique to Knoxville … the Urban Wilderness, 1,000 acres of forests, parks, trails, paved greenways and historic sites.

The Ijams Nature Center is a great place to begin to discover this vast natural resource. It sits at the center of the South Loop Trail, 42 miles of paved and natural surface trails. Ijams features two historic quarries that once supplied pink Tennessee marble for some of the nations grandest buildings and monuments. Now visitors can rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard to enjoy the quiet serenity of Mead’s Quarry Lake, hike through the “keyhole” built by quarrymen or rent a bike and ride the trails.

“We are the anchor of the Urban Wilderness,” said Ijams Assistant Director Mary Thom Adams. “This is a very fun place. We have bird walks, scary night movies and a hummingbird festival that attracted 1,000 people. We have symphony in the park, cocktail hikes and they even bring food trucks to the quarry.

The historic Southern Railway Station has been completely restored to house Knoxville’s only urban winery, Blue Slip Winery.

Visitors to the old station will not only be able to tour the winery, but also the building and, for an additional fee, the vintage rail cars that line the track outside the former passenger terminal.

ood wine requires aging.

That’s why it makes perfect sense that Linn Slocum has renovated an aging Knoxville landmark and relocated her urban winery.

In this case, good wine and a good dose of local history are adding up to a savvy business model that, as an aside, is likely to push the bounds of bustling Knoxville even a little further north.

Before moving into the former Southern Railway Station on Depot Street, Blue Slip Winery operated out of a cramped, 2,000-square foot facility at 105 W. Jackson Ave. There, Slocum had a small retail area and tasting bar on the main level, but all the wine was made in the cellar.

As quaint as some downtown aficionados felt it was to follow the trail of grapes to the cellar window, loading 20 tons of grapes through a small window was neither fun nor feasible in the long run.

As Knoxville’s only winery and Tennessee’s first urban winery, Blue Slip had to have a larger facility. When Slocum, who works for the city’s Public Building Authority, realized the station was for sale, she seized the opportunity.

“This is more than wine,” she said.

“This is history.”

The Station, built in 1903, was a prominent southern terminal for many years.

When typography prompted development of a line further east, the Knoxville route became less appealing. The last train ran out of the station in 1970 and it sat, largely empty and unused, until it was sold at auction in 1988 and converted into office space.

Even before moving Blue Slip to the site, Slocum tuck-pointed and painted the exterior brick and began restoration of the station’s once-glorious interior. Rich wooden staircases and paneling were restored, marble and wood plank floors in two elegant ballrooms were repaired and chandeliers were added. With the addition of dressing rooms, a catering prep kitchen and restrooms, the facility hosted numerous wedding receptions and private parties.

The former terminal area now serves as the retail shop and tasting room. Wine is being made in the former baggage area and barrels of wine are being aged in the building’s cellar.

As an “urban winery,” Blue Slip produces and bottles 20 of its own varieties all made from Tennessee fruit.

“We started with seven varieties, but

Slocum, who began producing wine from kits in 2000 and opened Blue Slip downtown in 2007, said Tennessee is just beginning to establish itself as a wine-producing state.

“Actually, there were some very large producers prior to Prohibition, but then the vineyards were all turned into tobacco fields and wine is just now starting to come back,” she said.

“We have a number of micro-climates in East Tennessee, and they lend themselves to grapes that are not easily found in liquor stores.

“Our Chambourcin is a unique grape that we can count on,” Slocum continued.

“It produces a wonderful medium-bodied red. The Cynthiana we make is a hearty red wine, reminiscent of a Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Cayuga white is made from a hybrid grape that was developed at Cornell University that flourishes in our humid climate.”

Blue Slip not only produces wine from its own vines in neighboring counties, but also has, for the past three years, produced bottled wine for a number of local growers.

In the future, the winery hopes to extend that kind of production to individuals who want to use their facilities for personal production.

Changes in state law in 2010 allowed Blue Slip to begin shipping wine out of state and distributing limited amounts to

local hotels and restaurants. The facility can also sell wine by the glass, which segues to a partnership with Old Smoky Railway Museum, Inc., a local group of train aficionados.

The railway group has several cars on the rail outside the station. Tours of a coach that operated last with Amtrak in the 1980s, a 12-compartment Pullman sleeper with one shower, a Southern Mail car, a multipurpose car and a 1915 private car with the observation deck, as well as more history on the station and neighboring depot building, are offered to Blue Slip visitors. For a nominal fee, visitors can tour the station and train cars, enjoy a wine tasting and learn more Knoxville history.

Train tours are available three times a day, whenever the winery is open.

There is more to Knoxville’s story than Rocky Top Story by Brett McLaughlin hen people hear “Knoxville” they tend to think of The Volunteers … as in football.

However, there’s more to this city than football and there’s more to the “volunteer” title than a Bluetick Coonhound named Smokey. In fact, there’s a lot of history in Knoxville and there are numerous

Knoxville has a rich history filled with colorful characters and famous, and infamous, figures whose lives have been the inspirations for books, movies and works of art. Whether your interest lies with the roots of American independence, a city divided by the Civil War, with literary and musical history, or gunslingers and ghosts, Knoxville won’t disappoint.

During our visit, we took what was billed as a Civil War walking tour that can be obtained online at http://www.knoxcivilwar.org.

And, while several of the buildings referenced on the tour are no longer standing, the tour proved to be quick and interesting. Better yet, its point of origin was the Blount Mansion near the riverfront. We decided to pay a little extra for the guided tour of the mansion and properties, and it was well worth it.

The mansion not only has ties to the Civil War, but it dates to 1792, having been built for William Blount, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first governor of the Southwest Territory.

Although in a state of renovation, the tour is very interesting and, if you like history, should be included on your visit if it’s the only thing you do. Visit: www.blountmansion.org.

There are also historical driving tours of Knoxville. One we came across has several of the same stops as the walking tour but also extends north to the Old Gray and National Cemeteries; south across the river to Fort Dickerson, one of 16 Federal forts in the Knoxville area; and west to the Farragut Folklife Museum, so named for David Glasgow Farragut, the first admiral of the Navy who is best remembered for his saying, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”

“People kept asking me where all these things were and I could tell them, but I could never show them or take the time to tell them the stories they needed to hear,” she said.

The result is the business she shares today with Brent Minchey, an undertaking that offers several regular tours — Civil War, Gunslingers, Musical History, the Shadow Side Ghost Tour, Early Years and Literary History — as well as custom tours.

Still’s favorite and the one she claims is the most fun is the Gunslingers, which features family feuds and wanted outlaws.

“It’s just fascinating to walk up and down these streets and realize that there were actual gun battles,” she said. “People shot each other and got away with it.”

The Ghost Tour is the most popular, particularly among young people, but the music tour is also fascinating because so much of Knoxville’s musical history is overlooked.

“The music scene actually started here and moved to Nashville,” Still said.

“We were isolated by our typography and, while that kept people away, it gave birth to our own style of music. It was sort of mountain music to begin with, influenced by the folks who settled here from Ireland, Scotland and England and also by the Native Americans.”

Still said few people realize it, but Knoxville native Walter “Brownie” McGhee performed pop blues, which was a precursor to “rock ’n’ roll,” and that the city also lays claim to Roy Acuff and the Everly Brothers.

“Knoxville has a very unusual history that has been largely ignored for the last 50-60 years,” Still said. “It is very diverse and multi-layered. That’s why you can’t do the city’s history in one tour and why I have eight of them.”

T

he Knoxville Museum of Art is at the forefront of this city’s focused effort to end centuries of cultural isolation.

The reality of life in Southern Appalachia may have been created, in part, by treacherous typography and a war that severed a state, but it was nurtured by senseless stereotypes. The fact is there has always been “higher ground” in Knoxville, and now that ground is on display for all to see.

Opened in 1990, the KMA recently underwent a $6 million renovation that addressed needs from outdoor terraces to interior floor and wall treatments. The project opened up vast areas of natural lighting and included a new garden area that, when completed, will provide a picturesque setting for everything from city events to weddings.

Although the 25th anniversary of the facility is just around the corner, Executive SPRING 2014 • 21

Director David Butler explained that the real catalyst for the renovation was the commissioning of a massive new sculpture by internationally acclaimed Knoxville artist Richard Jolley.

ing the separate sky portions, which hang independently from the ceiling and measure 90 x 9 feet, the sculpture weighs between 7 – 8 tons.

Five years in the making, the work was delivered on flatbed trucks with the largest sections being hoisted by cranes over the museum’s south garden wall.

“The sculpture is an affirmation of our focus on artists of this region,” Butler said. “It says that there is something here worth celebrating.

“It’s big and amazing,” he continued. “There is nothing like it anywhere. It’s what we do on steroids.”

Visitors to the KMA can pick up a brochure that provides a seven-part narrative, explaining the various panels that depict the entire cycle of life, from a man and woman in nature to a final figurehead that represents the quiet introspection people so often find during life’s final stages.

Choosing Jolley to create the piece, according to Butler, was emblematic of the KMA’s commitment to art of the region. That commitment is further enhanced by ever-changing temporary exhibits on the ground level but even more so, by the facility’s permanent “Higher Ground” exhibit on the upper level.

“With ‘Higher Ground’ we are embracing who we are,” Butler said. “We are celebrating who we are.

“You place value on the authenticity of what is produced in your own backyard,” he continued. “We are not provincial or parochial, but we are focused on this area.

“Part of our mission is getting past the stereotypes of the Appalachian identity. There is a lot of richness to this region when you dig into it. Artists are uplifting. It is where they aim … to the higher ground.”

The exhibit itself consists of approximately 60 pieces from public and private collections. Many of the featured artists spent their entire lives and careers in the area, while some moved away to follow their creative ambitions. Others were drawn to the region by its natural beauty as several landscape images attest.

Through Nov. 9, the KMA will also feature “This World Is Not My Home,” an exhibition of more than 50 photographs

att Gallaher is setting Knoxville’s dining world on its ear, and he’s doing it with a formula that doesn’t involve the word “fine.”

Set squarely in the middle of the bustling 100 block of Gay Street — the most popular extension of the city’s throbbing downtown district — Knox Mason is routinely filling its 49 seats with locals out for a stroll and outof-towners in the know.

Gallaher — who cashed in not one, not two, but three high profile cooking gigs to risk it all on Knox Mason — couldn’t be happier.

“Being chef-owned is important,” he said when asked about the eatery’s popularity. “It allows us to provide continuity to everything we do. I think chef-owned restaurants separate themselves from the pack.”

Clearly, Gallaher has attained separation. In the 18 months since he opened, Knox Mason has been reviewed by practically every travel and dining publication in the region. He’s given countless interviews and, this year, he was named the city’s top chef.

He doesn’t hesitate to explain what his restaurant is and what it isn’t.

“I think the phrase ‘fine dining’ is overused,” he said. “In one place you find linen tablecloths that have been ironed. Then you go to another place and they’re not ironed, but it also claims to be ‘fine dining.’ Honestly, if the fork isn’t exactly where it’s supposed to be, I don’t have a problem with that.”

Likewise, while Knox Mason purchases a preponderance of local vegetables — generally from the twice-weekly farmers market at nearby Market Square — and meat, Gallaher won’t attach the in vogue phrase “farm to table” to his operation.

“We’re helping our neighbors,” he said, referencing local producers. “Our menu changes four or five times a year depending on what they are able to provide us with, but the catfish aren’t from the Tennessee River.”

So, what is Knox Mason?

“I want the food and hospitality to be an extension of my personality,” he continued.

“I’m very conscious of cost (no entrée over $20) … I want people to come two or three times a week. I want them to laugh and have a good time. My staff gets it and that helps

generate business.”

The food itself is “familiar, simple and accessible.” It is a product of Gallaher’s upbringing, which involved his grandmother’s small farm, some cows and two gardens. It’s some of what he learned in his mother’s catering business and the small tearoom she operated in Morristown, TN. “It’s recognizable,” he said. “The flavors are clean and it is well-executed.”

Gallaher calls it contemporary Southern food that reflects the people who carved out a living from Appalachian rock.

“They were thrifty people who wasted nothing,” he said. “They were isolated, and I think that reality defines the cuisine in Southern Appalachia.”

Our visit came on Gallaher’s day off, but when we arrived he was processing a delivery of plums that became available just that morning.

“Plums are hard to come by around here,” he explained. “I wasn’t quite sure what to do with 40 pounds of them, but we’re working through them. They are probably all we will get this year, so we have to make them last.”

The chef ’s quest for freshness and his ingrained thriftiness sometimes collide, but he says he never “haggles” with his grower partners, and he never shorts his customers when it comes to preparation and creativity … our appetizer of duck wings being a perfect example.

“Everyone has wings, but I thought to myself ‘Why not duck wings?’” he said.

The result is wings that have been slowcooked, smoked and then fried in a Kentucky Soy and Muddy Pond sorghum teriyaki sauce.

Sprinkled with Anson Mills Benne seeds we, honestly, could have eaten two servings.

The Knox Mason menu has several unique salads, all with a Southern flare. There is a local peach blend that includes Benton’s country ham and Cruze Farm crème fraiche, young arugula and Texas pecans, served with sorghum-whiskey vinaigrette. Another salad highlights local heirloom tomatoes, while the Anson Mills Farro salad features Danny Shelton’s black raspberries, mint, Mountain Meadows cucumbers and Knox County peach tea vinaigrette.

“When I decided to make cooking a career, I knew that restaurant ownership was my long-term goal. My path took a few turns along the way as opportunities presented themselves, and working for the Haslams (Governor Bill and First Lady Crissy) was one of those once-ina-lifetime opportunities. When I interviewed, I let them know that moving back to Knoxville to open a restaurant was something I was interested in as my next step,” said Gallaher.

“I cooked on four continents and in 14 countries,” he said. “It was a great job. We stayed in some of the best hotels. I got to hear great concerts, and I cooked for everyone from the artist to the truck driver.”

But now, Gallaher feels he is where he wants to be, doing what he enjoys the most.

Each hole on the 6,602-yard course is unique, presents its own challenge and is meticulously groomed from tee to green.

Five level tee boxes lead to cropped bluegrass fairways and smooth bentgrass greens. Typical of a Jones’ design, 74 sparkling, lime sand bunkers provide target lines off the tee and openings to the greens.

“There are generous landing areas before and beyond the fairway bunkers, and with an accurate shot you can get to the green without having to fly a bunker,” said Ott. “The course can be abusive, if you try to overpower it. Play the course the way it was designed.”

As he describes the 12th hole, a 546yard, par 5, appropriately named “Trail of Tears,” Assistant Pro Carr Crowe says the course looks more intimidating than it really is. Between the tee and fairway is a deep ravine that appears further away than it is. A 185-yard tee shot easily puts you in the fairway and makes the hole playable.

“It’s visually deceptive,” Crowe notes.

“You don’t have to crush it off the tee to reach the fairway, and you can get to the

green in three.”

Carts with GPS tracking are precise and deliver accurate distances from tee to green. As you arrive at each tee box, the visual screen provides a virtual flyover complete with an audio description of how to play the hole.

The front nine at Sequoyah features three par 3’s and three par 5’s and the back has two of each making for an even par 72. From the forward tees it plays 5,325 yards but is no less challenging than playing from the tips. Mountain courses generally are characterized by sharp doglegs, sloping fairways and drop-offs leading to ample greens. While Sequoyah has all those features, well-played tee shots will offer flat lies with makeable approaches.

Undulating and tiered greens make it imperative to know the daily pin placements, and Crowe also reminds golfers to adjust club selection for the change in elevation.

While Ott finds it difficult to pick a signature hole he is partial to the second hole and the 15th hole. Two is a 166-yard, downhill, par-3 over a steep and deep ravine. The long, narrow green, only 18 yards in depth, has a limited fringe and is bordered front and back by rock walls.

measures 408 yards from the back tees, plays considerably less. A hidden green rests 300 feet below the tee box.

“First timers try to cut the dogleg and drive the green over the tree tops. It’s a blind shot that usually gets lost,” Crow said, advising players to hit an iron to the fairway, another to the green and two putts for a par.

Playing Sequoyah National is not only an enjoyable golf experience with spectacular views, it is also a journey through Cherokee Indian lore. Each hole is adorned with a plaque depicting an endearing piece of tribal culture. Names like “Long Man,” “Thunder” and “Kingfisher” describe rituals, events or nature’s role in Cherokee beliefs and legends. The first hole is aptly named “Creation” and explains how the mountains came to be. The last is called “Yona” explaining the important role of the bear in Native American culture. It contains a mammoth, fairway bunker in the shape of a bear paw.

There is no turn at Sequoyah, and the holes are side by side. Pro shop attendant Earl Carroll, a Native American, loves the long ride from the 17th green to the 18th tee. He calls it the “Ride of Reflection.”

“I think about my round, my golf game and my life. It puts it all in perspective,” he said.

As a member of Troon Golf, Sequoyah is held to a high standard of service and has been rated as the 9th Best Golf Course in North Carolina. resident Herbert Hoover took fishing seriously, and once said, “Fishing is much more than fish … it is the great occasion when we may return to the fine simplicity of our forefathers.”

Given that, fishing can be an even greater occasion when we return to the fine rivers of those forefathers — rivers that are teeming with trout and heaving with history.

If you come to Cherokee, NC, you’re likely to catch a little of both.

The waters leading to and running through Cherokee’s 30 miles of streams are considered the longest stretch of managed private fishery in the East and are stocked with brook, brown, golden and rainbow trout.

The Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail — a combination of 15 rivers, creeks and forks — includes some of the finest fly-fishing waters in North Carolina. The trail begins just over the border on Highway 107 and continues all the way to Swain County, and proudly includes a section on the Raven Fork River on the Cherokee Indian Reservation. From hatchery fish to wily natives, the Trail has an abundance of trout in both delayed harvest and wild trout water.

For either the experienced fisherman or the novice caster wishing to drop a line in the Tuckasegee, the backbone of the Trail, or preferring to venture off the highway and discover more secluded and smaller creeks and streams, a detailed map provides simple directions as well as access points avoiding private property. Fishing regulations — seasons, limits, bait, etc. — are also listed for all 15 fisheries.

But, if it’s a monster you want, the Trophy Waters on the Cherokee Indian Reservation, 8 miles north of Dillsboro, are the place to head.

“The Raven Fork Trophy Water enhances the Trail’s overall experience because it provides a type of fishing not found anywhere else,” said Julie Spiro, executive director of the Jackson Valley Chamber and Tourism Authority. “It’s thrilling to catch fish on that stream. There are a lot of large trout in there.”

inches are not uncommon. The 2.4-mile stretch is a catch-andrelease fishery and requires special permits, which can be purchased at local shops in Cherokee.

If it is your first time in the area and you are unfamiliar with the water, a local guide might be just the ticket.

“Everyone needs to experience some time on the river,” said local guide and lifelong fisherman Alex Bell, who along with Spiro and WNC native Bobby Kilby created the Trail Map. Bell has fished Jackson and Swain counties for over 30 years.

“I used to keep my fly rod, waders and gear in the truck, and hit the river for a few hours just to unwind and decompress,” said the now happily retired educator.

Bell operates AB Guide Service and points to the river saying, “This is now my classroom. I tell people they can learn the basics here in a few hours and then fish for a lifetime trying to master the art.”

Bell echoes Spiro’s description of the Raven Fork.

“The smaller streams are the locales for native, smaller fish that are often a little more wily. All these streams and creeks have fish,” said Bell, “but they are spooky and a little tougher to catch. The weekly stocking on the Reservation’s Trophy Waters provides anglers with the rare opportunity to net some really big fish.”

He points out that there are more trout per mile than most rivers, easy access, trouble-free wading and wide areas for easy casting. “We are fortunate to have a fishery like this in our own backyard. I can’t think

CHEROKEE TROUT TOURNAMENTS The Cherokee area plays host to several trout tournaments each year.

Two this fall are The Qualla Country Tournament, Sept. 5 – 7, and the Rumble in the Rhododendron, Nov. 7 – 9.

The Qualla event features the biggest purse as the $11 entry fee puts competitors in line for a share of $20,000 in prize money.

For those unfamiliar with tagged tourneys, you’ll discover the waters (excluding the 2.2 miles of catchand-release waters) stocked with fish tagged with different colors.

Just catch and redeem them for cash up to $500. Prize redemption for tagged fish will be at the Water Beetle Stage, a pavilion next to the Cherokee Welcome Center on US 441.

The Upstate is rich with Cherokee culture, but nowhere are the customs and traditions of the Cherokee Nation more vividly portrayed than in this sovereign nation near the North Carolina entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is, like the Cherokee people themselves, entirely unique. At the museum, visitors can experience the 11,000-year-old Cherokee story vividly told through interac-

tive video, intriguing displays and a full sensory experience. Stepping through the entrance doors, one can discover the Cherokee people’s spirit of inventiveness, resilience and will to survive. Museum officials warn to keep a handkerchief close because Cherokee history is serious stuff.

As you enter the soft trails of the Oconaluftee Indian Village, it’s no longer the 21st century; you’re immediately transported to the 1760s. The faint tang of wood smoke wafts by as you are led by a Cherokee cultural expert on an interactive journey through Cherokee lifestyle and history. Your guide will show you the way through the winding paths, flanked with traditional Cherokee dwellings, work areas and sacred ritual sites. Delight in cultural dances amid the swaying Oaks and sycamores. As you wander, interact with villagers as they hull canoes, sculpt pottery and masks, weave baskets, and fashion beadwork. Watch as a village prepares for war. Hear the sounds of an authentic stickball game. Be amazed by a blowgun demonstration.

Hours of operation until October 18 are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with tours every 15 minutes except from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The last tour is given at 4 p.m.

The Village will also be open from October 29 through November 16

for Native American History month.

Special hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Village is located at 218 Drama Road.

There are a number of special events planned for this fall as well.

The Cherokee Indian Fair is over a century old. It’s a carnival and an agriculture show. It’s an art show and a game show. There’s food, music and rides, fireworks and stickball. It will run Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on opening day and noon to 10 p.m. Oct. 8 – 11.

And, starting Oct. 25, Cherokee hosts three haunted attractions and a scare-free kid zone. Though Nov. 2 visitors to the Oconaluftee Indian Village and Mountainside Theatre can experience the Haunted Theatre, Horrific Hide’n’Seek, Village Myths & Legends Ghost Walk or the 5 Little Pumpkins kid zone.

itting on the deck of their new home, Steve and Lisa Fendrich appear perfectly content.

They have found their place.

They engage in casual conversation about the house, but try as they might to make eye contact with a stranger their gazes keep drifting toward Lake Keowee and the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond. Those irresistible little glances tell the real story of why they are here.

The Fendrich’s principal residence has long been Atlanta. For years they lived in a beautiful home situated on two acres that Lisa had finely groomed. Then they downsized to a condominium.

“It (the condo) was easy to leave,” Lisa quips.

Leaving meant coming to the Upstate, where the couple had purchased a home in Waterside Crossing. It was a nice home, but it still wasn’t quite what they were looking for. The neighbors were great, the house was on the lake and a cove meant their daughters could swim safely.

But, something was missing.

It turned out to be “the big view.”

That was something the Fendrich family had loved in every other home they had Steve and Lisa Fendrich didn’t necessarily want a bigger house, but they did want a bigger view. When they found this home in The Cliffs at Keowee Springs, they added a fire pit and small gathering area down by the lake to further enhance their view of the lake and Blue Ridge Mountains.

owned, from Atlanta to the mountains of Colorado. They decided to shop the housing market and turned to Sotheby’s International agent Justin Winter, who specializes in Cliff’s Community properties.

“We saw this house three times before we decided it was the one,” Steve said of the new home in The Cliffs at Keowee Springs.

Once the “buy” decision was made, 1st Choice Realty Broker Melanie Fink was engaged to sell the home in Waterside Crossing. She made short work of the task and the Fendrichs closed on their new home in May. They promptly engaged builder Gabe Yoder to do some remodeling that centered on making this home a composite of their entire lives — a little of Atlanta, a little of Colorado, a lot of their daughters and a good deal of what makes them happy. As they talk about the house, one can’t help but think this may be their final home.

“The girls are 19 and 17 now,” Lisa explained.

big house, but we wanted a bigger view.

We wanted more recreation. Steve likes to golf, so he can do that. This house is close to the water and it’s quiet water. We can kayak and swim. We have three coves now and the beach club is just around the corner.”

“We wanted outdoor living,” Steve said as he again looks out across the lake.

“We added a fire pit and small gathering area down by the lake. The girls like to bring their friends and now they can congregate at the lake.

“The view is like the ski mountains in Colorado but on the water,” he added.

The popular deck area of the home can be accessed from either the great room or the master suite. At one end is an outdoor kitchen; at the other is a stone fireplace, one of five in the home. A common chimney services a separate fireplace on the master suite side of the deck. The porch is lighted and features screening that can be raised by the flip of a switch.

There is ample room for entertaining.

Directly below, a large, flagstone patio services two of the low-level bedroom suites and provides the best views of the lake when the trees are in bloom.

Two more, back-to-back, gas fireplaces make this area useable year-round as well.

Like virtually all the houses in Keowee Springs, the Fendrich home has a rustic, almost mountain cabin, feel and appearance. The exterior use of stone, cedar paneling and slate shingles, carries inside where, again, there is extensive use of stone, including Tennessee fieldstone from countertops to ceiling in the kitchen. A massive stone fireplace dominates the main living area.

only opens onto the deck but, across the room, there is a small alcove that has its own sitting area and a small desk where Steve can keep up with business. Another unique feature of the suite is rich, paneled wainscoting that extends high up the wall, bringing the eye up and making the room feel even taller. As he did in other bedrooms, Yoder installed inset lighting and replaced chandeliers with much more functional ceiling fans.

The accompanying bath includes a double vanity, sunken tub and large walk-in shower.

The main level also contains a guest room with its own full bath, another half-bath and a laundry room.

Brother Bear guards the landing on the trip downstairs. Another reminder of the family’s time out west, the wooden carving is usually adorned in a hat befitting the season.

Yoder was kept busy on the lake level of the home, converting a massive, enclosed wine cellar into more useable space.

Adjacent to this area is the former “theater room,” which had been complete with theater chairs, a projector and large screen. The Fendrichs now use the space as “overflow” when they host large groups of visitors, or as a workout area. One wall has been strengthened to accommodate an unpretentious collection of elasticized workout gear. A small closet is the nerve center for the home’s audio and electronic systems.

This level of the house is also home to the couple’s daughters. Each enjoys a spacious room with views of the lake.

Marble countertops adorn large bathrooms in both suites. The youngest daughter’s room is larger and has access to the lakeside patio, while the older daughter has a more extensive bath, with sunken tub and walk-in shower.

Her room also has a small sitting area similar to that in her parents’ suite.

“We think it is the perfect home for us,” Lisa said. “The girls can invite their friends; we can rest and relax. It’s very livable.” n

Fall For Mountain Lake Bass

A

stopover to Port-Tronics Fishing World in Greenville, SC found manager Justin Holder holding court with several of his regular bass fishing customers on the topic of which Upstate lake was the best place to catch bass during the fall. Fortunately, several Upstate lakes produce good catches of both spotted and largemouth bass, but the discussion volleyed between lakes Keowee and Hartwell.

“When overnight cooler weather moves in, anglers on Hartwell will be catching good largemouth bass on deep points and humps in about 25–35 feet of water using jigging spoons,” said Holder.

“On the cloudier days, the largemouth are closer to the top, but most of the top water and schooling action that you’ll see on Hartwell will be spotted bass.”

One customer chimed in that his buddies and he typically fish back in the middle of the creeks on Lake Hartwell chasing schooling fish, and had found that spotted bass and hybrid bass will mix together and chase baitfish on the surface. The angler said that, if you targeted schools out in the main lake, a mixed bag was more in order. But, in any location where fish are schooling against red banks, he reported the catch is almost entirely spotted bass. The unanimous favored baits for casting to schooling bass are Zara Spooks and Lucky Craft baits in natural shad colors.

Topwater baits come in a variety of sizes, shapes and actions. Most are configured to create a surface commotion that either resembles an injured baitfish or a smaller predator attacking an even smaller prey.

A local favorite with Upstate anglers is the Sammy, a topwater, walking bait made by Lucky Craft Lures. When Lucky Crafts first emerged on the local market 48 • UPSTATE LAKE LIVING

nearly 10 years ago, many anglers scoffed at the higher-than-average price per lure.

These days the lures retail at around $15, and nobody bats an eye because the lure’s fish-catching ability is beyond reproach.

“I like a Sammy in either a mirror or white finish for Keowee,” said Holder.

“The spots on these lakes will come out of 40 feet of water or deeper to nail it.”

The design of the Lucky Craft Sammy makes “walking the dog” easy. Cast the lure out and then retrieve it with rapid, successive snaps of the rod tip. The tapered body and weighted tail make the head of this bait sit high in the water, putting it in a prone position that provides instantaneous turning and splashing with the slightest rod movement. The internal glass rattles call fish from great distances and depths. With the Sammy’s lifelike finishes and unsurpassed action fish find the bait hard to resist.

Holder said that Lake Keowee will also produce good catches of spotted bass during the fall on mid-depth baits. He

said anglers would do well by throwing a variety of bladed jigheads, like Road Runners and Blade Runner Tackle products, where they find concentrations of baitfish.

The common thread among anglers on both bodies of water is to target fish that are keying in on baitfish schools.

Cooler weather and any rainfall will tend to concentrate baitfish around the mouths of major creeks.

“You always hear: ‘Find baitfish in the fall and you’ll find the fish’,” said Holder. “It looks like now that fall has arrived, that’s exactly what’s going on in more than just one location.”

thought it would make sense to do a simplified layout and explanation of two Duke Energy guidelines that may have an impact on your existing boat dock or the permitting for a new boat dock or erosion control project.

Even though both of these guidelines have been touched on in previous issues, we have been fielding many questions over the past couple of months. To read about these guidelines in more detail, refer to the 2014 summer issue of Upstate Lake Living.

The link to the Keowee Toxaway Relicensing Agreement is also listed below. The Shoreline Management Guidelines (SMG) are located in section #7 with the Habitat Enhancement Program (HEP) information being in appendix H. Modification of Existing Docks to Reach Deeper Water The intent of this revision to the guidelines: • to improve the usability of existing boat docks during extended drought periods Who qualifies?

• existing approved boat docks on a case-by-case basis What modifications can I make to my dock?

• the ability to increase to total allowable square footage from 1,000 to 1,200 square feet if needed to reach deeper water • replacement of dock, approved relocation, reconfiguration and simple extensions of gangways or piers • Note: this 200-square foot allowance is intended to provide space required to extend gangways or piers to reach deeper water; not intended to add deck space to the dock.

• Docks must comply with all other existing guidelines.

When can this be done?

• Lake Services will accept applications from eligible property owners once the license agreement is signed but no sooner than Dec. 1, 2014.

• The licensee (Duke Energy) will provide broad public notification at least 30 days prior to the opening of the window of opportunity.

Once this window opens, then for a period of 365 days the Lake Services will accept eligible lake use permit applications for the surface area and build-out period exceptions.

Who qualifies?

• property owners with existing approved boat docks on a case-by-case basis • an approved lake use permit for a notyet-constructed boat dock issued less than 12 months prior to the Effective Date of this agreement What modifications can I make to my dock under this revision?

• The normal maximum size limit of 1,000 square feet may possibly be increased to 1,200 square feet if the larger size is needed to reach deeper water.

• Modifications can include complete replacement of dock, relocation of the dock along the approved shoreline, reconfiguration, simple extensions of gangways or combinations of these.

• This 200-square foot allowance is intended to provide space required to extend gangways or piers to reach deeper water, not intended to add deck space to the dock.

• Docks must comply with all other existing guidelines.

Waiver of permit fees: • There will be no permit application fee or a HEP fee for permitting approved dock modifications needed to reach deeper water.

• This waiver will only apply to applications approved within the window of opportunity noted above.

• Property owners who wish to modify their docks to reach deeper water either before or after the window of opportunity may do so with the proper approvals, including written approval from Lake Services. In this situation the applicant is not eligible to increase the surface size above 1,000 square feet or eligible for any fee waivers listed below.

Habitat Enhancement Program (HEP) The intent of this addition to the guidelines: • to create, enhance and protect aquatic and wildlife habitat within the Project Boundaries

How will this affect you?

• This is a fee that will apply to any dock or stabilization request requiring a permit this includes dock or stabilization modifications, expansions or maintenance. There is no fee associated with existing approved boat docks or shoreline stabilization structures, unless there is an application for alteration, expansion or maintenance.

• The HEP fee will also apply to other permit application types such as marinas, excavations, conveyances, line crossings, etc. The total list and fee chart can be viewed on the Duke relicensing link below.

• As a note, the existing fees required for lake use permits for such things as private docks and shoreline stabilization have not changed and remain at $300 for private docks and $50 for shoreline stabilization.

• The HEP is an additional fee that Duke Energy as the Licensee is required to assess and administer.

What is the fee amount?

• After Sept. 1 fees are: Standard boat dock application: $300 HEP fee: $500 Total: $800 (This amount total would be the same if the application was for a combined riprap and boat dock permit.)
