Why Study Environmental Management? Are you concerned about the environment? You can prepare yourself for an exciting and rewarding career making a difference in addressing many challenges that we face working locally and globally to protect our environment. As an Environmental Manager, you will be working to ensure that we maintain healthy ecosystems from natural landscapes to urban and industrial environments. The skills you will need to achieve this go beyond a sound understanding of the natural sciences to include social, cultural, economic, legal and management aspects of environmental management. The field of Environmental Management is projected to continue to grow in national and international importance. The University of Queensland program focuses on two key fields, Natural Systems and Wildlife and Sustainable Development.

Choose Your Major Why study Natural Systems and Wildlife?

Why study Sustainable Development?

By choosing the Natural Systems and Wildlife major you will learn to use scientific, social, economic and managerial information in natural systems and wildlife conservation and management.

The Sustainable Development major focuses on how to minimise conflict between growth and development and our environment. You will learn about designing and incorporating environmental solutions into better cities, industries, farms, mines, tourism and more.

This major combines fundamental biological studies with multidisciplinary skills in environmental management, decision making, problem solving and policy analysis. The final year develops your ability to manage complex problems that threaten the health of natural systems.

This major will provide you with multidisciplinary skills in environmental management, decision making and problem solving with a focus on urban, industrial and rural environments. It equips you with the ability assist firms and governments to set and meet appropriate environmental standards.

Industrial Placement Many employers require students to have a significant acquaintance with the conditions and activities of their profession prior to the attainment of full professional status. The Environmental Management industrial placement program provides you with an opportunity to put what you have learnt at university into practice. You will acquire a better understanding of Environmental Management as it is practiced and will be able to focus on a field of particular interest to you, which can be of benefit when searching for employment after graduation. Through the program you will gain an awareness of the social, economic and administrative considerations influencing the operation of industrial and commercial organisations. Many students are invited to continue to work at their host organisations after their formal industrial placement period is finished. The aim is to provide an environment where you can examine, in detail, the factors influencing and involved in the operation and management of a relevant enterprise and relate theoretical knowledge to practice in organisations involved in environmental management. You will normally be required to undertake a semester of continuous, structured, course-related industrial placement in organisations involved in Environmental Management or environmental sustainability. This placement usually occurs in the second semester of your third year of study. For many students its a highlight of their program.

Kristine Dewar Kristine’s Environmental Management degree has led her in to a career as a Business Sustainability Analyst. She designs and delivers innovative carbon management and sustainability services across a range of areas, including greenhouse gas inventory development, eco-efficiency assessments and energy audits and sustainability project development and implementation. Kristine credits her industrial placement and her honours research project on ‘corporate understanding of ecosystem services’ as the most beneficial parts of her degree. “Professionally, the most memorable thing was taking on my honours research project, which had me go out and interview environmental management professionals in a range of industries and organisations. It gave me some great insights into the range of jobs within the broader environmental management profession and allowed me to meet some amazing people that I learned a great deal from” she said. “In my experience, UQ graduates are highly sought after. Graduates of the Environmental Management program are known for having a broad understanding of a range of environmental issues and a professional background gained through the industrial placement program that other graduates often don’t have”.
