• locate stations at diagonals or mid block to enhance pedestrian circulation through pacwest lobbies • encourage the success and access to all at-grade retail in the office buildings within the station room

improve and support the pedestrian experience along sw madison between sw park and sw 4th to encourage east-west circulation

• make sw madison the focus for art as an amenity that strengthens the connection between 5th and 6th and beyond • introduce materials and lighting in a manner that enhances the pedestrian scale • be mindful of the day user verses the night users, their reasons for travel, their destinations, and their return to the stations

Coming down from the Hill It was concluded that an urban tram would be the most direct way to connect OHSU to the developable waterfront properties to expand it’s campus and misson as the hilltop campus was reaching it’s limit with regards to space.

Three Institutions, an emerging neighborhood and a whole city As Portland has continued to strengthen the relationship between parts of the city and it’s growing institutions, the catalytic nature of light rail and streetcar has extended to the OHSU Campus and South Waterfront.

A new bridge across the river will connect OMSI and central eastside and the Conventions center at Lloyd District.

a synthesis of goals 1. Accomodate an expanding mission for OHSU 2. Reinforce OMSI as a catalyst for science, industry, and education 3. Connect both banks of the River in a manner that enables OHSU and OMSI to transform the South Waterfront Basin 4. Provide a comprehensive Central City transit, open space, bicycle and pedestrian link between east and west sides south of downtown 6. Secure the future of the Central Eastside Industrial District 7. OHSU Master Plan 2007

Transit Circulation The OHSU campus will be served by light rail, streetcar, and bus.

Streetcar from the central eastside will arrive on the campus via the new Willamette River bridge, and join streetcar lines passing through the district on SW Moody and SW Bond–SW River Parkway to downtown Portland and points south. Eastbound streetcar will join buses in the right lane of SW Porter prior to crossing the bridge.

Light rail will carry campus visitors north to downtown Portland, and south across the new bridge to SE Portland and Milwaukee. Trains will cross SW Moody on SW Porter and stop at a central platform before crossing the bridge to OMSI. Buses will also use the bridge, and will connect the campus to many of the key arterial streets in SE Portland and Clackamas County.

Buses will stay in the transit street with light rail, and continue following trains up the transit-only elevated structure towards PSU and downtown Portland.

a public room the intersection of light rail, streetcar, cars, pedestrians comprised a complex mix of activity with varying priorities. To make the proper clearance at the center of the navigable channel of the river the slope was above the maximum for the location of a light rail station and stop that required a minimum 1.75%. The solution became a center platform station on the western side of the intersection. This 90’ ROW intersected with both the campus promenade and the River Parkway. The confluence of these three elements were resolved in a manner that enhanced the surrounding developable properties and created a plaza full of activity and promise.
