Behind the Brush with Kichael Bonofiglio For as long as she can remember, Kichael Bonofiglio has been painting.

In 2019, Kichael said goodbye to her day job and made the leap to pursue her art full-time. As an abstract artist, Kichael aims to convey an emotion with each piece, pulling inspiration from the people, objects, and natural environment around her. Having spent much of her life in the tropical islands of South America, nature is a big part of what inspires her, and who she is. Q&A with Urban Barn’s brand stylist Q. What are some key décor elements that will elevate a room?

Layering! This is what adds depth and interest to your space, and what creates that “right at home” feeling. If your sofa comes with pillows, don’t stop there – add more! This will bring in textures and colours that unite your home from room to room. Layering also can include using different shapes and sizes of furniture and accents. Oh, and don’t forget plants. If you are a plant killer, invest in some good quality faux ones. Nothing makes your home feel more elevated than a beautiful house plant.

Q. What tips do you have when designing small spaces?

This can be a real challenge of what you want, and what you can fit. When it comes to furniture, if you really want that chunky sofa, go for it! Just remember to keep the other pieces in your home light. For example, pieces with glass or slim legs are great for letting the light pass through.

Any pieces of furniture you can get that also double as storage is a huge win. Too many accents can create a chaotic look, so only display items that really highlight your style or are meaningful to you.

Q. What are the most common mistakes people make when redecorating?

Not sticking with a colour palette. You can dip into any style you like and create a beautiful, unified look if you stick within your colour palette. This goes for woods too!

You can mix wood colours, just remember to stick with warm or cool tones. No one wants to feel limited or confined to one style, so just remember this one rule and your space will look amazing!
