A. INTRODUCTION STREET

THE QUESTION IS,

WHY STREET?

Street along with other urban elements contribute to create better live in the city. But a better-designed street playing important role in people and goods mover and improves quality of built environment. Its function as a system in the city make it important day by day since now people lived in the city. Streets are typically lined with building and public space, and the movement as a key function, but there are several function of street that important.

9

1. Connection

2. Conduit

An essential in today human life is mobility. This activity create lines that connect every place that matters. Lines that regularly we know as street. Transportation network capable of providing efficient, economical, reliable, safe, and secure movement of the people/goods. That make the very existence of cities and occurrence of global trade possible.

What inside the street? Is it private cars, public bus, public tram, bicycle or the people? Is it a fast traffic or slow traffic? Vehicle that crossing the street is affecting street design. Providing for movement along a street is vital, but it should not be considered for cater motor vehicles only, the passage of people on foot and cycle also an important modes of travel. A better designed street can create a safety street for people and the vehicle.

To create a street system, people classified street based on function and its physical shape.

3. Corridor Street not seen as functional system only, its capable to adding sustainability system and create an ecological corridor. Utilities and drainage can have a major impact on the design and maintenance requirements of streets. Sustainable drainage systems can bring environmental benefits, such as flood control,

10

STREET AS .. 4. Place

5. Crafting

The place function is essentially what distinguishes a street from a road. The sense of place is fundamental to a richer and more fulfilling environment. It comes largely from creating a strong relationship between the street and the buildings and spaces that frame it. A better designed street can increase development value in surrounding area.

In planning new developments, achieving a good place should come before designing street alignments, cross-sections and other details. Streets should be fitted around significant buildings, public spaces, important views, topography, sunlight and microclimate. This procces of crafting street bring out human scale and pedestrian walkable district.
