I
It takes really living in a home before you can understand how it works and doesn’t work for your family. Once you’ve discovered the ways it doesn’t work, you can make changes accordingly. Sometimes, too, the ceiling collapses, and it paves the way for you to make the changes you’ve been considering anyway. Such was the case for Molly and Michael Painter when they came home to find the living room ceiling in pieces on the floor. “After living in the home for five years and sharing a bathroom with our daughter, we decided we needed our own space,” explains Molly. “The ceiling collapse was just the impetus to make the changes we’d been considering for a while.”
The couple wanted the first priority to be maintaining the integrity of the architecture while also making it more livable for their active family of five.
The Painters were drawn to their Georgian Revival home because they love classic architecture and the charming neighborhood with its walk-able streets was idyllic. “We really love the gracious common spaces a Georgian Revival offers when you walk in the front door,” says Molly. The couple wanted the first priority to be maintaining the integrity of the architecture while also making it more livable for their active family of five. Though the project would be challenging, trying to merge the original home with a new addition, not to mention matching the original brick exterior with the new wing, Molly says the 18-month process was seamless. “Larry Irwin was our superintendent,” explains Molly, “and he did a fabulous job on the day to day management.” While the ceilings were being replaced with sheetrock, the HVAC and plumbing was replaced as well, and landscape designer Frank Liggett moved the rose garden from the back yard, which was in the way of the 20 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2015

addition. “I was thrilled that Frank was able to create an inviting rose garden in the new space,” says Molly. “It’s our refuge in the spring, summer and fall when the roses are in bloom.” A designer herself, Molly took to completing the look of their home, calling on her background in fashion (she worked at Ralph Lauren in New York City), as well as her own family. “My three girls are all extremely creative and individual,” she offers. “They provide a lot of inspiration.” Molly continues, saying that she also took inspiration from her favorite designer Kelly Wearstler and fashion designer Lela Rose. “Her style is feminine, yet edgy and cool.” She keeps her textile background close with etches taken right from the Ralph Lauren draft tables, framed and hung as art in various places around the home. We asked Molly what her go-to fabric and wallpaper lines were and she quickly replied with Osboure and Little, Cowtan and Tout, Quadrille, Celerie Kemble and Travers. She adds that her favorite way to add a wow factor lies in lighting fixtures, spending a lot of time searching for the perfect unique piece. And though every space has different appeal to her, Molly’s favorite room in the home is the navy lacquered den with the orange couch. “I love to curl up on the couch under a blanket and read a book.” Their family of five spends most of their time in the large kitchen, cooking, doing homework and entertaining. “It’s the hub of the house and the grey and white palette provides a soothing appeal amidst the chaos,” shares Molly. “My advice to anyone decorating their home,” she says, “would be to live in the home before you make any major changes. See how you live, move and feel in the space. Trust your instincts and go for it.”v

A Modern

T
It’s glam, modern, sexy and extremely livable. But when Mollye Bell, personal stylist and senior managing partner for J. Hilburn, first saw the Georgian ranch house on Sharon Road, it was just another fixer-upper.
Thankfully she knew the perfect design team to give the home its unique style. Working with husband Tim, architect Garrett Nelson, builder Ben Collins of the Salins Group, interior designer Stephanie Semmes and several local artists, Mollye’s team made the magic happen. A native of Dallas, Texas, Mollye’s other homes, including her most recent in Colorado, had been traditional. With this home, she and Tim were ready to go more modern, a vision they shared with Garrett and Ben. The home needed a second story, but the couple didn’t want the house to appear any larger. Architect Garrett came up with a roof design to meet the need. “He was great to work with because he truly listened to what we wanted and was able to save the original integrity of the home, which was really important to us,” says Mollye. Renovation began with the home being completely gutted and a new second story (1,000-square feet) added. Garrett and Ben worked to maximize the home’s existing clean lines, redefining the space for the family’s lifestyle. The family lives in the kitchen, so it was enlarged,
an eight-foot island was added and the workings of the kitchen, coffee maker and other appliances, were compartmentalized behind a hidden wall to keep the look clean and streamlined. Garrett incorporated a large kitchen island the couple had used in previous homes into his own design. “This is the third house in which we’ve used the kitchen design with the huge island,” says Mollye. “When the kids were younger, I loved the design because the kids could sit at the island and do their homework or draw while I was cooking dinner. Now it is the perfect place to entertain, have meetings for my J. Hilburn team, or for my kids to work on various school projects.” Other architectural elements were added to redefine the large spaces and give a modern flair. The inspiration for the home’s large open arches, Mid-Century modern railing on the stairs, sleek limestone framing for the fireplace and interior design direction came from Hollywood. “Ben was watching the original Mommy Dearest movie and thought the home in the movie reminded him of our home, so we started moving towards that Hollywood regency style,” says Mollye. “The feel of the low-slung ranch was old-school classic,” explains Ben. “With its 10-foot ceilings and huge picture window, it was speaking Hollywood regency to me.” The remodel took a year from start to finish, and while no corners were cut, the team found ways to complete the renovation smartly and well within budget. “Ben understands my passion for design and helps me figure out how to get what I want,” says Mollye. One example is the downstairs playroom with the Murphy bed concealed behind white paneled doors. When Mollye wanted iron windows, Ben suggested painting them pewter to get a similar effect. The kitchen’s original design called for trusses; Ben had the idea for the wood ceiling. When Mollye couldn’t find the exact woodwork she wanted for the unique banister railing, Ben designed it himself. “All the people we work with get invested in the project,” says Ben. “They find creative ways to add value and that benefits the homeowner in the end.” Mollye brought designer Stephanie Semmes into the project once it became time to start talking about the interior. “Stephanie is a great designer because she takes the time to get to know her clients and decorates for the client,” says Mollye. “Rather than demanding you take on her style, she helps you improve your own. She is also great at finding new vendors and sources to make your home unique. I also love that she is able to mix price points. If she finds something that works, she doesn’t get caught up with where it came from.” Stephanie took Ben’s Hollywood regency inspiration and made the style livable for the family. “Stephanie really helped pull the Hollywood regency feel to a more casual livable style that melded my husband’s desire for the modern with mine for the traditional,” says Mollye. “Hollywood regency style had its heyday in the 1930s and is making a modern comeback,” says Stephanie. “The style is about the juxtaposition of super clean, minimalistic lines mixed with luxe fabrics and showy details that add drama. It is very hot on the West Coast right now and we’re just starting to see it move onto the East Coast and into Charlotte as homeowners turn away from the ultra traditional to cleaner, more contemporary living.” To keep the Hollywood regency look authentic, Stephanie found pieces that added drama and pop, pulling many from vendors on the West Coast, including the dramatic light fixture from Oly. The designer used color, texture and art to balance Best of Guide 2015 Urban Home Charlotte 31
Because Mollye loves supporting the work of local artists, she and Stephanie commissioned several local pieces that reference the family’s history. “It makes the artwork meaningful to me to know the artists personally...” the modern drama with warmth and personality, helping Mollye and her family feel at home with this new style. “I get to know my client’s personality and weave parts of their story into the home’s décor,” says Stephanie. She explains that the antlers in the master bedroom are a nod to the family’s home in Colorado. The cowboy painting in the bedroom connects Mollye with her Texas roots. Because Mollye loves supporting the work of local artists, she and Stephanie commissioned several local pieces that reference the family’s history. “It makes the artwork meaningful to me to know the artists personally, especially since my daughter Alley (whose own artwork graces the stairwell) loves art,” says Mollye. Charlotte artist Zan Byrd created the artwork in the keeping room from family photos taken in Colorado. The large painting in the living room is by Fran Kolmeyer (Alley’s art teacher) to remind the family of their two years living at The Ford Plantation in Savannah, Georgia. Windy O’Connor created all the artwork in her daughter’s room. Fellow Charlotte Country Day parent, Margot Whitley’s work hangs in the family room off the kitchen. Even the dining room has historical significance. Mollye and Tim have lived in Charlotte several times in the past as they moved for his career. The table was handcrafted for the family by Old Wood Company in Asheville and represents their new start in their Charlotte home. “Incorporating history into a home is so important,” says Stephanie. “It connects us to who we are – heart and soul,” says Stephanie. “The more I know about my clients the better I can work with them to create an environment that is meaningful and feels like home. Mollye is a unique, creative individual and this home is very much her,” says Stephanie. “I love the clean lines of the house with pops of bright color. Color has always made me happy!” says Mollye. “The house is definitely comfortable to truly live in. There is not a single piece of furniture in the house that the dogs and kids can’t lounge on.”v 32 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2015

Zoning Out on the Lake
Beth KEIM The name of the game in a room this large is cohesive color and zoning.
The “bonus” to this lake house bonus room is not just in the sheer space (it’s the same square footage as the entire main floor!) but that it has a sliding door that leads straight to the dock. There is room for everyone; room to watch a movie, shoot a game of pool, read a book next to the fire, have a meal, belly up to the bar or spend hours rediscovering board games. A space this large, however, can be daunting to design and furnish. Do you just find the largest sectional made and call it a day? Do you cave in and get that TV the size of a movie screen? Add to that floor-to-ceiling bookcases that need to be filled with accessories and it can be downright paralyzing. I was recently asked to turn this large, but amazing space into the perfect multi-purpose game room, dining room, lounging room and living space, all for a family of four and their friends. The name of the game in a room this large is cohesive color and zoning. I decided to cover up

those open shelves with pretty upholstered doors to hide all of the clutter. The upper doors slide open to expose a large TV and a new sofa and four chairs combine to create the perfect media zone. We created a separate space for gaming by moving the pool table to the other side of the room, and tucked a round table and chairs for party food or lunch into the bay of windows with dreamy views of the lake. Once I had created my zones, I pulled all my colors, keeping in mind the flow from the upstairs to the down. We chose cool tones with blues and a touch of teal – very “water-like” clean, crisp and calm. When Tyler and Amanda Covington bought their sprawling ranch home in High Point, they planned to make it their own with artwork, paint, new flooring and a few minor renovations. They hired interior designer Christi Barbour of Barbour Spangle Design to help.
C
Christi first met the couple in their current home. “In order to do my job well I needed to know a lot about the family – how they live together and what they love,” says Christi. “Homeowners are not always comfortable being completely open and honest, but the more they are, the better the results.” “At our first meeting, I told Christi I love to cook,” said Amanda. “I am always feeding someone. She also asked if she could look inside my closet.” But when Christi toured the couple’s new home she quickly discovered that is was not laid out to meet their needs. She knew the narrow galley kitchen and separate den would not work for the familycentric way they wanted to live. “I told them we could take the home they’d bought as it was now and put their stamp on it with their look and their things,” she said. “Or we could completely renovate the home and create what they’d asked for.” Having decided this would be their forever home, the couple agreed to renovate. “We only wanted to do this once,” says Amanda. “And we wanted to get it right.”
Design is a Labor of Love Christi’s vision included moving the kitchen to the much larger den area, and re-envisioning the entire first floor. She collaborated with John Vaughan of B.E. Vaughan and Sons on all the details. “The driving force was configuring a family-centric home that was easy to entertain in, a wonderful circular living space that is comfortable and reflects their colorful personalities,” says Christi. Christi’s design sketches worked in the colors from Amanda’s closet. “She was very conscious of making sure we loved everything; okay was not good enough. She made sure we loved every detail,” says Amanda. Messy living Renovation began, taking the home’s first floor down to bare bones, floor joints, ceiling beams and load bearing walls during one of the coldest times of the year. “The main floor was gutted,” says Amanda, who was at home all day with the couple’s two boys (ages nine months and three years). The driving force was configuring a family-centric home that was easy to entertain in, a wonderful circular living space that is comfortable and reflects their colorful personalities “We stayed in the basement during the day. Upstairs was our sleeping area. I would go from the top floor through the construction, sometimes on my hands and knees, to get a bottle from the refrigerator. But it was all worth it – every bit of it.” Happily Ever After The home is the result of a successful collaboration between a couple who knows what they like and a designer who invests time in getting to know her clients. “It takes more time to design a home around its owners, personality and lifestyle – it is more of an investment,” says Christi. “But in the end it is much more rewarding for everyone. factor Amanda loves details, so Christi incorporated extra attention to detail throughout. 1. Brown on brown. On brown. The sophisticated rich brown study was once the dining room. “Tyler trusted us with his study. And he loves it,” says Amanda. Luxe details like the brass coffee table created a masculine meets glam look and offset the dark walls. The built-in cabinets were designed around the antique gun – willed to Tyler by an elderly man he once helped on an elk hunt and framed as a gift by Amanda. 2. The banquette. This family-centric cozy space was inspired by a dinner Christi had with her children, sitting close in a restaurant booth. “I wanted to give Tyler and Amanda opportunity to snuggle with their boys at dinner.” 3. The console. “Home is being surrounded by the things you love,” says Christi. “Amanda saw this console by Mr. Brown London and fell in love with it, so we placed it in the foyer. Now it brings her joy every day when she walks into her home.” 4. The island lamps. “These happened because the eight and a half foot ceilings had me so bummed,” says Amanda. “I couldn’t put a chandelier in the kitchen and wasn’t happy with anything flush mounted. Christi came in with this solution and it was genius. It makes the area cozy but also gives it grandeur.”

5. The arches. “All of the design pictures Amanda showed me included arched hallways and doors,” says Christi. “We couldn’t get all the arches she was asking for, so we framed the dining room with architectural arches and rounded the ceilings in the master bedroom hallway to give her room for the chandeliers she loves.”

You Can’t Know Everything

Let’s spend this issue talking about some of my philosophies on collecting art. As a popular comedian once said, “You can’t own everything – where would you put it?” Worse yet, you can’t know everything; therefore, to ensure your approach to collecting art will be satisfying and knowledgeable, you must specialize. By specializing, you develop an in-depth understanding of the subject while expanding your appreciation and enjoyment and, incidentally, you come to know the prices well enough to understand the relative value of any given artwork. In one important sense, you don’t own a work of art anyway; you only pay for the privilege of being its caretaker and living with it for a time. Sooner or later you trade, sell or bequeath. The art then takes up company with a new “owner” who has paid the price required to intercept it, or with a relative who had the bad manners to outlive you. This concept of being a caretaker versus an owner of art helps

Every home tells a story about its owners; how they like to live, where they’ve travelled and the things they enjoy collecting. The best homes layer well-loved items throughout the house giving personality, style and an authentic character to it. Walking through the Eastover home of Amy and John Hines, you immediately sense the couple’s understated, refined taste: her love of fashion, with preppy New England roots and his interest in maps and history. And even though the couple, their four children and one Frenchie have lived in the home for only 10 years, it has the warm, relaxed feeling of a place that has evolved over time. Interior Designer Holly Phillips of The English Room may have something to do with that too. She began working with Amy soon after the couple purchased the home.
She says the décor works because her client has a passion for decorating and a clear vision for what she likes. The home is also a perfect example of Holly’s design philosophy: “Buy the things you love and you will find a place for them.” “Holly and I began with a good foundation of wallpaper and paints,” says Amy. “I still love all of the wallpapers we chose to this day, especially the painted Paul Montgomery paper Holly found for our dining room.” The things Amy loves most about her home are the textures that make it warm and welcoming: grasscloth, seagrass, fur and suede. She also loves the plaids and stripes used as accents and the artwork the couple has collected from their travels and from local artists in Charlotte. “Some people curate and Amy is one of those,” explains Holly. “That is why her

home is ever-changing and always evolving. It is a product of constant layering and it absolutely speaks to Amy’s personality.” As Amy continues to curate, Holly helps her incorporate each new treasure into the home’s décor. Maps, nautical themes, equestrian items and original artwork are a few of Amy’s favorites that find their way into the design scheme. “We layer. Nothing is done in a hurry,” says Holly. “Amy finds a piece of art she loves and we move the décor around in the house to accommodate the new addition. She loves pieces she can move from room to room.” And while the home reflects Amy’s taste, Holly’s influence is seen throughout, as an eclectically modern twist on Amy’s classically understated style. “My style is more modern. I love mixing antiques with contemporary pieces and modern art,” says Holly. “I am also always attracted to color, while Amy prefers a more subtle palette of beiges, taupes and grays that remind her of the Nantucket coast where she loves to vacation.” Like the home itself, the working relationship between the two women has evolved. Amy appreciates Holly’s designer eye. “She is able to mix my more calm whites and grays with a pop of something modern like Kathryn Ireland’s Greek key window treatments, turtle lamps or Amanda Talley’s fun artwork.” Some of the most interesting design elements in the home speak to the women’s shared love of animals. Golden turtle shells and intertwined coy lamps, crystal snakes on the coffee table, antlers in the kitchen; paintings of birds, thoroughbreds and whale’s tales, animal-hide rugs and antelope patterned carpet (a personal favorite of Holly’s) connect the home with nature. The living room, with its mix of modern and traditional, is Holly’s favorite. She loves the contrast of the horn mirror, Best of Guide 2015 Urban Home Charlotte 73
modern artwork by Amanda Talley (of Hidell Brooks Gallery) and the David Hicks rugs. But she also thinks the kitchen is amazing. “It is modern and classic all at the same time, which is hard to achieve.” Recently renovated, the Hines’ kitchen was designed by Sam Greason at Meyer Greason Paullin Benson and builder, Andrew Roby. The large island is just big enough to allow people to gather without taking up too much space – perfect for the family that loves to cook together. “We added pretty lamps and curved sides to accent the area and make the oven hood a focal point,” Amy says. “The forged metal work on the cabinets brings in a preppy barn-like feel. We loved the Manhattan Calcutta marble with its dramatic veins.” Even though she loves her new kitchen, Amy says her favorite room is the great room. “It is layered with art and a pretty rug. There is a constant fire in the fireplace and on nice days we can open the French doors onto the terrace,” she says. “You can see the kitchen from the great room so it feels like you are in one big room. When the homeowners of this gorgeous mountain home decided to build, they knew from the start that they wanted a modern home that fit snugly into the North Carolina mountain landscape.

Having purchased the beautiful land right next door to their friends’ home in Boone, the couple couldn’t wait to wake up inspired by the expansive mountain views on a daily basis. Local architect Bradley Dowdy drew up a floor plan that happily combined their contemporary style with the rugged environment, and the couple called on Andrew Roby to construct their dreamy mountain escape and David Smith of Custom Interiors to make their reality beautiful and livable. “Our clients like a contemporary style, as the Mrs. is a fantastic artist,” explains Trent Haston, CEO of Andrew Roby. “They wanted this landscape to be the backdrop for their greatest masterpiece – a beautiful family compound.” Having worked with the family on their primary Lake Norman residence for over ten years, Trent and the team at Andrew Roby had an intimate knowledge of their clients’ style. From purchase to completion over two years later, the team worked together to create an extraordinary retreat that satisfied the modern appeal of the homeowners and the cozy feel of a mountain home. “I’ve discovered a fondness for contemporary architecture that I didn’t use to have. Wood finishes, natural coverings and clean architectural lines with sleek moldings not only look great, but force the highest quality of craftsmanship,” explains Trent, adding that his father introduced him to contemporary style and the beauty in details that can make a statement. “The designer’s choice of ‘matchbook stone’ on the grand fireplace wall and on the kitchen countertops really nailed both the contemporary style and the statement-making details.” Harkey Tile and Stone worked extensively with the designer to get the perfect look for the stonework on the home – something designer David Smith says is integral to the success of a pulled together home. “Working with a great team, including a contractor and especially an interior designer, who have access to a plethora of resources, is key to really pulling together a home and Best of Guide 2015 Urban Home Charlotte 81

making it feel complete,” he explains. Drawing inspiration from the homeowners’ love of modern art and natural earthy tones, David Smith got to work on the interiors. “The lady of the house is an amazing artist and nearly all the artwork came from her,” explains David. She also added pieces from friends and artists Rick Beck and Tom Spleith, as well as a sculpture in the kitchen by Phillip Baldwin and Mary Guggisberg. “When you start with beautiful art like that, it’s easier to build accessories from there.” Though many types of design inspire David including antiques mixed with modern European design, he felt equally at ease designing a modern home. “Modern country or mixing Mid-Century with anything antique is what really excites me, but in the end it just has to be great design. ” He adds that unexpected details are the secret to decorating. “No matter what overall style you’re decorating in, it doesn’t have to be predictable.” Owning his own retail store allowed David to pull many of the furnishings and custom pieces from his own collection in to round out the design of the couple’s home. Trent and his clients agree that the gathering room is their favorite space, noting that the kitchen, dining and sitting rooms are all open to one another, but sufficiently defined as their own space. The sliding glass doors that open up to the deck with panoramic views of the rolling mountains add drama and natural beauty, while the dining room table, custom made from a fallen 300-year old tree by local silversmith gaines Kiker, adds warm character. David, however, is drawn to the downstairs sitting room, which has become a great place for games and cocktails with warm colors and a goatskin rug that you “don’t want to step off of.” Either way, a marriage of modern aesthetic and warm livability make this home a success on all levels.v Best of Guide 2015 Urban Home Charlotte 85

When former Charlotte residents Erica and Craig Coblenz moved home to be closer to their family, the perfect house was waiting. Ideally situated in the Old Providence North area and sitting on three acres, the home was built in 2003 and still in mint condition.

While the couple loved the property, its location and schools, they weren’t as enamored with the homes’ heavy country French architectural style, reproduction furnishings and materials. They wanted a quieter palette with a simpler, more modern vibe to make the home livable for their active family with three young boys and a dog. To achieve their vision, their realtor led them to Circa Interiors and Antiques and designer Heather Smith. Well-traveled and known for her ability to bring a youthful, edgy spirit to traditional interiors, Heather’s aesthetic was a perfect match for the family’s needs. She pulled together a handpicked team of master craftsmen to build in layers of creative details that transformed the home. Her team included kitchen designer Emily Bourgeois, who completely redesigned the kitchen as well as cleaned up and redefined the breakfast area, family room, mudroom and coffee bar, which are all adjacent to the kitchen. David Purser refinished all the hardwood floors in the home and
collaborated on the kitchen island with builder Damon Rumsch. Mudwerk created the artisan plaster for the range area, ceiling, and walls in the coffee bar. Damon Rumsch of Coral Construction oversaw the six-month renovation. Heather also called on the talents of local artists to add a layer of modern interest to the home. Terry Reitzel’s original branch artwork creates a statement in one of the hallways. Custom sconces designed by lighting artist Evan Wood accent the padded headboard in the master bedroom. And Chris Kudra created custom steel windows, doors and the mesh firescreen drapery in the family living area. Other art, furnishings, accessories and lighting in the home are from Circa Interiors. Each element was carefully to be functional as well as beautiful. “If it’s not useful, it’s cluttering up the space,” says Heather. “With three small children and a dog running around, we don’t need that.” The breakfast room, located to the right of the kitchen is one of Heather’s favorite rooms in the house. With its

You don’t want to invest in trendy pieces you will grow tired of years down the road.” custom steel and glass doors that let in lots of light and a great view of the backyard, this is the spot that invites you to linger, long after breakfast. “I love the way Emily defined that space with the ceiling beams, painted darker to make the space feel cozy,” says Heather. “Some of my favorite antiques from Circa are in the house. I love the pair of bookshelves we used to hold everyday dishes and the pair of Venetian lanterns we hung in this space and over the kitchen island. The crusty gilt on those pieces is balanced by the warm walnut iron trestle table.” You might not expect these beautiful furnishing to be so functional. “The seating is super kid-friendly,” she says, explaining that the stools of faux leather are easily wiped clean, the chairs are on casters to move around effortlessly and, like the sofa, they are covered in washable slipcovers to manage any spills.
While the homes she designs are layered with details, Heather’s design philosophy is simple. “The main components – paint, carpet, drapes, lighting and large furnishings – should be timeless and durable,” she says. “Clean lines, neutral colors and fabrics that wear well over time are key. You don’t want to invest in trendy pieces you will grow tired of years down the road.” Like the home she transformed for the Coblenz family, she prefers functional simplicity and a clutter-free environment, using beautifully collected items and thoughtful layers to add personality. “I like to personalize the space with pillows, throw rugs, books, objects, artwork and lamps that are fun to move around as you accumulate new things,” she says. “It’s the same way I think about clothes – invest in quality where it matters and throw on some great accessories.”v Best of Guide 2015 Urban Home Charlotte 95
