or her home differently, Which is what makes
house hunting so fun.
Each one is so unique and different, tailored to the homeowners that have so lovingly created the space to fit their lifestyle. Searching for one that matches yours (or at least, closely enough that you can make it your own) is what’s challenging. Some people want cozy spaces for reading and spending time with family. Others want rooms just for working out, and others want open spaces where you’re never out of sight from children or parents. When Larry Schwartz discovered his little slice of heaven near Freedom Park, a 1956 ranch home in a cul de sac, he knew it would be a perfect space catered to his penchant for entertaining and his love for family. “A ranch was the way to go for me,” says Schwartz. “I cook a lot, I entertain a lot. So, I needed something that was conducive to that.” Despite the age of the home, updates had been made, but Larry called on designer Emily Bourgeois to fine tune plans for the home. The team gutted the home, removed the roof and added 2,800-square feet, transforming a once closed-off ranch into an open home perfect for entertaining. Guest rooms were added along with a bathroom and a media room. The kitchen was widened and a banquette was added for a cozy aesthetic that Larry says has become one of his favorite spaces in the home. “When Emily suggested a booth in the kitchen, I was kind of skeptical because I thought it could be an enclosed 18 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014

The process took around three years, and if you ask Larry, it’s still in progress. He says that the aesthetics grew as he worked more closely with Emily and they got to know each other. “Once we learned about each other, the style evolved,” explains Schwartz. A frequent international traveler, Larry incorporated European influences in the home and even discovered his inspiration for the living room ceiling while he was touring the Cave of Moët in Champagne, France. “I took a picture of 20 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014
the ceiling and texted it to Emily,” he recalls. “I think she thought I was crazy at first, but she made it happen and it really adds some drama.” Emily and Larry brought in Chris Kudra of The Beauty of Iron to create all the ironwork, handcrafted and created especially for the home. Chris custom-made the chandelier, dining table base, sconces, curtain rods and art hangers, and the metal doors – to name a few things. The ironwork throughout the home, coupled with the European vibe adds a feeling of unity and provides a flow to the home that wasn’t there in the old floorplan. For the powder room in the hallway, Emily created a space that’s both functional and fashionable. The mirror-tiled, curved wall leads into a private water closet, while the lounge-like “waiting room” offers

guests a chance to have a seat on the bench and take a minute before washing up to return to the party. Hard wood, leather, brass and mirrored tile give the room a swanky look and the paneled door in the wall means you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. When asked what his advice to homeowners would be when renovating

a home, Larry offers an audible wry smile and suggests they hire Emily. He quickly adds, “Have a lot of patience and don’t rush. If a house flows properly, almost any design can work, so create rooms that give thought to other rooms.”v

Kitchen Envy
Catherine Whitney With the holidays practically here, you still have time for some updates to your kitchen.
For those of us who remodeled our kitchens 10 to 15 years ago, going on a kitchen tour can really give us kitchen envy! As I toured several kitchens on the Heart of the Home kitchen tour in September, I walked away feeling like my kitchen was “oh, so 20 years ago.” Don’t get me wrong, I love my kitchen! It’s beautiful, my appliances are top of the line, I have great lighting and the layout is still functional after all these years. My cabinets have stood the test of time and look great. So… why am I still envious? Styles change constantly – whether it’s paint colors, tiles or countertop materials, appliance designs, fabric textures and lighting fixtures – all are important elements of kitchen design. What was cutting edge a few years ago is now dated. The
26 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014
truth is, it’s not like getting rid of a few pair of pants and some outdated dresses for a wardrobe makeover. This is a big project and remodeling may not be an option. I am the consummate DIY homeowner because quite honestly, I like design changes but cannot always justify a complete overhaul. Over the years, I have learned to install a sprinkler system, use a wet saw to cut and lay brick pavers for our 2,000-square-foot patio, replace light switches and simple plumbing parts and I’m not afraid of a paint brush either! I have learned that if I take my time, I can achieve some very satisfying changes without remodeling my entire kitchen. I also know what I cannot do myself and then I hire a professional.
Here are top 10 kitchen makeovers that you can do without a lot of dust and fuss: 1. New cabinet hardware. Beautiful knobs and handles are easy to find and install. 2. A fresh coat of paint on the walls and ceiling makes a huge difference in little time. 3. If you have a chandelier, change the color and/or shape of the shades. 4. If you don’t have adequate task lighting, add under cabinet lighting and consider using a better bulb (halogen or LED). 5. Update the fabrics of the kitchen chairs or banquette. 6. Install a new faucet. 7. Change out the sink. This can be tricky, so consult with professionals about reworking your cabinetry and countertops to accommodate. 8. Refinish hardwood floors. 9. Update the appliances. Again, consult a professional to ensure a good fit. 10. Replace fabric window treatments with plantation shutters. You will love the clean look it gives to the room and you’ll definitely love the outside light that can now come inside! With the holidays practically here, you still have time for some updates to your kitchen. Charlotte has some wonderful resources for great cabinet hardware, fabrics and upholstery, paint stores with knowledgeable staff and many excellent contractors and interior designers to help you along the way. Make use of local resources!v

“With two small children, the
Petillo’s knew they needed something stylish and comfortable, but also
wanted a space in which they could entertain friends and co-workers.”
Moving to another state is difficult. Add onto that a home that needs some serious organizing and design and it will make you want to call in reinforcements. Which is exactly what Lynn Petillo and her husband did. “We move a lot for my husband’s job and had just arrived to Charlotte from Seattle,” explains Lynn. “We needed a design that was clean, flows easily from room to room and can easily translate to any home, should we pick-up and move again.” After interviewing several designers, a friend of Lynn’s suggested she contact Anne Buresh Interior Design for help with their home in Eastover. “As soon as I called Anne, I felt like I’d known her all my life,” remembers Lynn. Though Lynn and her husband weren’t quite sure what design they had in mind, they knew they liked a timeless, classic style. “With two small children, they knew they needed something stylish and comfortable, but also wanted a space in which they could entertain friends and co-workers,” says Anne. During their first meeting, Anne and Lynn discussed how they wanted the house to be used. “It’s
important for the client, and by extension, me, to know how they want the rooms to function,” offers Anne. “Once that component is identified, then we can move onto design direction.” Operating on a “less is best” philosophy adopted by Lynn and her husband, the three worked closely to find a look that made sense for their lifestyle. When agreeing on a color palette, they decided that the “backbone of the design” as Anne puts it, should be a range of neutral tones. They needed some pop, so Anne suggested they take a look through Lynn’s closet to see what she gravitated towards. There, they discovered deep corals and decided that a subtle achromatic range with pops of deep coral would be a logical palette for the living room. A gilded glass coffee table added interest and contrast. The Petillos travel a lot, so it was important to incorporate items they’d acquired along the way into the design. “We added many things, but the book about Seattle on the coffee table was a must,” offers Anne. Moving from a home in Seattle with a very different floorplan, the

Petillos needed furnishings to round out their space but still wanted to use existing pieces to fill in the gaps. Anne worked with their sofa and chairs in the family room but added a weathered French grey console and various accessories to brighten it up and create unity. “I love fitting my clients’ personalities into my designs,” Anne smiles. “It can be challenging but extremely rewarding and I love pleasing my clients.” Anne easily pulled together a breakfast room off the kitchen and a fabulous dining room where the Petillo’s could host dinner parties. “The whole project was completed in about three months,” says Anne, “because they really wanted to host Thanksgiving in their beautiful new home. The dining room was one of the chief projects.” Working with the existing wallpaper, Anne added an antique gilded oval dining table and soft linenupholstered dining chairs with nailhead trim. “I was excited to find this Greek Key console table,” adds Anne. “It’s a gorgeous piece that fits the space perfectly and adds an ideal flow from the kitchen to the dining room.” A textured rug and antique mirror round out the space, while the Italian chandelier is an immediate eye-catcher. “They really wanted guests to feel comfortable to linger after dinner and converse. This space lends itself perfectly to that.” On “reveal day”, Anne sends her clients out of the home, often to the spa, and installs the design to be revealed upon their return. Candles are lit, Champagne is chilled and the homeowners get to experience their new look for the first time. “I love to see the WOW expressions on my clients’ faces,” says Anne. “It’s an unbelievable experience.” Of course, no home that Anne designs is complete without her signature bowl of almonds placed as a nod to good old southern hospitality. “It represents a welcome and a wish of good health,” explains Anne, “and what’s more inviting than that? Clients say they can never keep the bowl filled – which I think speaks to how an attention to detail makes all the difference.” When asked what her favorite room in the home is, Lynn quickly answers that it’s the living room. “I never had one in Seattle,” she explains. “It’s inviting, peaceful and cozy, and with two kids that’s important.”v

Leslie and Mitchell Wickham looked for a perfect home for over a year,
T
and when they came across this lot on Bolling Road in December of 2006, they were certain they’d found a location for their ideal home.
They called in a team of professionals to help build a home that was ideal for their family, but also looked like it had long been a part of the Eastover neighborhood. “We liked the village feel,” explains Leslie. “We take advantage of the tree-shaded sidewalks and walk-ability of the neighborhood.” Architectural designer Frank Smith visited the empty lot with the couple and drew up plans for a home that included a lot of natural light and the ability to see the gardens outside from all angles in the home. “The architectural style of the house is designed with a playful geometry,” explains Frank. “It’s inspired by an Edwin Lutyens English country house, selected to reflect the romance of the outdoor life, and the hospitality and the heritage of the Wickham family.” Emily
Bourgeois designed a kitchen for family and friends to gather around complete with a large island with plenty of storage. John Byrd landscape design spent a year with the couple choosing just the right plants and landscaping for year-round enjoyment of their outdoor spaces. Mark Phelps Interior Design rounded out the finished home with a cozy, traditional aesthetic perfect for the family’s collection of art and favorite pieces. The paneling up the staircase, in fact, was designed after Leslie’s grandmother’s home, a perfect set-up to display the many pieces collected over their marriage. “We wanted to build a home that had the character and integrity of an original Eastover home,” offers Mark, “but built from the ground-up.” Mark worked closely with Frank on the design of the home, careful Best of Guide 2014 Urban Home Charlotte 37

to consider the architectural details that would add character and authenticity to the structure. “The interiors are laid out in a completely different expectation from the exterior’s first impression,” offers Frank. “It is a system of organized space designed to create movement and accommodation; rooms positioned on axial aligned site lines from multiple directions with a mathematical logic that is a paradox of the exteriors playful whimsical character.” The design and build phase took almost two full years to complete, with everyone working together to create a cohesive look to the inside and outside of the home. “Good design is giving the client a space that fits their personality,” says Mark. “Choose a team that you’re comfortable with and that understands your family’s lifestyle. That’s when you get results you’re happy with.” Most of the accessories and décor for the home were purchased through local shops in Charlotte, Atlanta and across the pond in England, adding to the traditional English style that punctuates the eclectic home. Tufted leather chairs placed in front of the fireplace offer a great winter spot for the family to enjoy in their living room, while the loggia couch is perfect at dawns year-round. A wide range of art lines the walls in the stairway, highlighted by a classic chandelier, and pieces around the remainder of the home tie everything together with a harmonious design. Mark’s favorite

room in the home is the living room, with all its seating options and pretty angles, while Leslie really enjoys her kitchen to gather friends and family around the counter. When asked what her advice for homeowners would be, Leslie offers this, “Don’t try to do everything at once and always follow your instincts.”v

Falling In Love With Your Home Again
BETH KEIM As I worked my way through this home, preparing it for sale, it suddenly took on a new life
I have lived in my home for 12 years now and I just love my classic 1921 bungalow, with all its quirks and character. I have designed and redesigned it about three times – a bonus of being in the business – but after so many years, things are starting to look (and act) a little dated. My first thought was to move — find a new project and start all over. In reality, however, I love my neighborhood and all my neighbors, so I decided to bite the bullet, gut the bathrooms, tweak a few things and stay put. I also just recently proposed this strategy to a client. Lori and Brian Crowder, along with their three small kids and big fluffy dog, came to me wanting to turn their front living space into a functional and cozy home office. Halfway into the project, they decided they wanted to move. We went ahead
44 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014
and finished the space we started and I suggested staging the home with pieces that would work in their new place as well as help in showing the home at its best. Buyers consistently pay closest attention to the kitchen. Will it require updating? How’s the layout? Is it functional? We gave all the cabinets and the backsplash a facelift, offering an updated look. It’s always amazing to me what a little paint can do. The room also had a window nook just screaming for a banquette, new table, lighting and chairs. Banquettes are one of my favorite kitchen elements; not only are they visually appealing, but they also cut down the clutter too many chairs can create, and they are a great idea for multiple kids. Upholstered in a vinyl, leather, vinalized or treated fabric, you’ll have easy clean up. Pair a pedestal

table and coordinating chairs and you have a nook that dresses up your kitchen. At Lucy & Co, we have our banquettes made at the right height and length to fit like a glove in your space. One of my favorite local artists, Josh Utsey, created our table with an inset base for easy access. Finish off the space with a few simple accessories, an oversized light fixture and, of course, artwork to pull all the colors from the other parts of the home, and you have something cohesive, cozy and beautiful. As I worked my way through this home, preparing it for sale, it suddenly took on a new life – something that is always satisfying as a designer. However, my favorite moment of all? When my client decided to stay.v Beth Keim is the owner of Lucy and Company, a full-service interior design firm located at 1009 East Boulevard. Hip local hot spots are packed with patrons closely with their contractor, Matt Ferguson of Stirling Group and young and old, and once dilapidated homes have been lovingly architect Drew Button. “We went to painstaking detail to preserve Best of Guide 2014 Urban Home Charlotte 49

and recreate original elements of the home,” says Gary. The first four months were spent breaking the home down to the studs so that the team could reach the electrical and plumbing lines for repair. They also worked to redesign the kitchen and the master suite to feel updated, yet like it had always been a part of the home. A screened-in porch was added off the back of the home for ample entertaining and original touches like glass doorknobs and hardwood floors and were added back into the renovation to restore character in the home. “We had a very clear vision of how we wanted to define our new space,” explains Gary. “We didn’t want too much space or to feel like we had rooms that we never used. We wanted a living area that was warm and inviting, a kitchen and dining area that was large enough to entertain, and a private master suite that was spacious and special.” A love for earthly elements drove the design. The couple chose lots of wood and stone textures to mix with vintage and found

objects that punctuate the décor in every corner. “Nature creates a sense of calm, peace and centered-ness that we wanted to bring into the home,” offers Mark, “and the vintage objects are a nod to our heritage – we both grew up in the South.” An oversized island was added in the kitchen to create a cooking and gathering spot, while a mahogany square dining table and banquette seating opened up a unique dining space in the formal dining room. Gary even created his own sconces to complete the dining area using panels made of real bark that emanate an earthy glow when the lights are turned on, complimenting the moss centerpiece perfectly. In every nook and cranny, Mark and Gary lovingly placed items they found interesting, historic or meaningful, including a vintage doctor’s bag, mechanical wheels, old books, leather saddles, worn teddy bears and the model battleship Mark’s grandmother was given before her soldier went to war. “Design is most successful when it creates a space in which we can relax and re-energize,” says Mark. “For us, that means surrounding ourselves with things that bring us joy. This could be colors and fabrics, books, photographs, and art. It could be things that were gifted to us or things that we’ve always had; and finally things that we have picked from antique stores, flea market and roadside junk shops.” Listed among some of their favorite places to shop are High Cotton Home and The Furniture Connector for new décor and Slate Interiors and Southend Trading for more eclectic and original finds. When asked what their best advice is for decorating, both Mark and Gary express similar sentiments – collect things that help you remember who you are and who you want to be. “You should feel warm inside when you look around your home,” offers Gary. “A home represents the individual. First and foremost, it should make the homeowner feel at home.”v 52 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014

A Labor of
Love
By Anne Marie Ashley Jim Schmid Photography
Not everyone walks into the home they’re going to purchase and falls in love.
W Sometimes, seeing the
potential in a home is just as exciting, knowing that you
have to put a little TLC into it to make it your own.
When Jennifer and Troy Felts purchased their first home on Maryland Avenue in Charlotte, it may not have been THE one, but they could imagine possibilities. After calling in the Realtor, contractor and designer, Sarah Catherine Norkum, the couple felt they could proceed with confidence. It became THE one. Over the course of three years, the Felts worked closely with Sarah Catherine to tear down walls, opening up the closed off layout to create a flow to the home that made sense, and updated the home from its original 1940s style. “The home was super choppy,” explains Sarah Catherine. “We spent a lot of time figuring out a floor plan that worked for them.” The biggest focus was on the living room and the great room. “We dropped down the raised fireplace in Best of Guide 2014 Urban Home Charlotte 59
the great room, added hardwood floors and ripped out the built-in shelving, adding a more modern custom built-in and mantle,” says Sarah Catherine. The master suite was remodeled to include another window to frame the bed, an upholstered barn door for the remodeled bathroom, and a second laundry in one of the walk-in closets. Upstairs, the team remodeled the guest bathroom, adding a walk-in shower and freestanding tub, new fixtures, vanity and tile. “My client’s style has evolved considerably over the three years,” says Sarah Catherine. “Some of my designs were a little out of their comfort zone, but now they’re much more willing to step outside the box.” When asked which is her favorite room, Sarah Catherine admits it’s the front living room. “It’s edgy, sophisticated and eclectic. I can envision some fantastic entertaining in the evenings.”v

Deck the Yard for Holiday Festivities
Mark Morgan The weather may feel colder on our faces when we step outside, but the winter landscape is just as functional and beautiful as the spring landscape.
Now that the planting of fall annuals is complete – ornamental kale, pansies, snapdragons and violas – the holiday season is tugging at your shirttail. There is an opportunity this month to build on the momentum of fall and winter color to design a spectacular landscape for the upcoming holiday season. It’s common to focus on decorating the main entertainment rooms inside the home before throwing open the doors to welcome holiday guests. For curb appeal and enjoyment, it’s equally important to decorate the landscape. It’s the first thing guests see when they pull into the driveway and sets the tone for the party. Our landscape design specialists at Morgan Landscape Group enjoy adding live cuttings like magnolia leaves, evergreen hollies with red berries like Burford Holly, green garlands and wreaths on windows and door surrounds, and wrapping trees in twinkling lights for the holiday season. The outdoor decor shouldn’t stop at the front stoop. Use the outdoor living areas you enjoyed in the warmer seasons as focal points by adding lights

or greenery. It can draw guests outdoors to a place of special ambiance during the party. The gazebo can make a statement in the winter months, too. The warmth of a fire in an outdoor fireplace or fire pit is practical and pretty when combined with lights, greenery and outdoor fabric. Rock gardens and water features become more pronounced – let the hardscape speak during the colder months when blooming is less prolific.
Meravic
Another fun holiday addition is wrapping various sizes of spheres with lights and hanging them at differing heights from porches, tree branches, or placing them on the ground. Start with grapevines or chicken wire to make the spheres or buy them pre-made. In addition to winter-hardy annuals and holiday decorations, trees contribute interest to the winter landscape and can be spotlighted by appropriate lighting this time of year. Beautiful bark, like that on the white trunks of the sycamore tree, the deep red of Natchez crape myrtles, the exfoliated look of river birch, or the silvery-white majesty of the beech tree add liveliness worthy of highlighting. The sculptural branches of some varieties such as Chinese Fringe Tree encourage a lingering look in the winter months when leaves are AWOL. Plus, holiday lights can be added to some perennials that exhibit interesting texture year-round. For example, consider lighting the slender stalks of ornamental grasses for an eye-catching effect. One more strategy we like to use for our clients who have made a landscape investment over the previous months and years: clip twigs, berries, and leaves from established perennials such as Hydrangea blooms, Nandinas, Magnolias, Pines, and native Eastern Red Cedars to add beauty and aroma inside the house, too. The weather may feel colder on our faces when we step outside, but the winter landscape is just as functional and beautiful as the spring landscape. A trifecta of colorful and textural plants, holiday decorations and illuminated hardscaping will enliven your landscape just in time for holiday entertaining.v Mark Morgan founded Morgan Landscape Group over 20 years ago. He brings thirty years of knowledge and experience to every project he works on and has a passion for landscape design, environmental conditions and plant materials. Color Perfect By Anne Marie Ashley Photography by Jim Schmid
When Rick and Elizabeth Newton
H
were looking for a new home in Myers Park,
they suspected they would have to purchase and
renovate in order to meet the needs of their larger family and penchant for entertaining.
However, after seeing the huge yard and inviting floor plan of this home on Sherwood, they knew they’d found their perfect space and could move in without lifting a floorboard. The previous owners had spent two years working with Marilyn “Pete” Mangum of M Pete Inc., alongside architect Garrett Nelson, perfecting the total renovation of the home, and to the luck of Rick and Elizabeth, it was idyllic for their family of six. Having lived just two blocks away in their previous home, the Newtons knew how charming Myers Park was, so choosing to stay within the neighborhood was a no-brainer. “We just love the sidewalks and neighborhood feel of Sherwood Avenue,” explains Elizabeth, “plus, with so many children on the same street, my kids can run from yard to yard, or ride their bikes around safely.” Having worked with Holly Phillips of The English Room in Charlotte on two of her other homes, Elizabeth called on her once more to bring this project together. “Holly is very creative and loves color as much as I do,” says Elizabeth. “With
four young, active children and a dog, we wanted something elegant, yet totally practical and she helped me bring it all together beautifully.” Holly adds, “Elizabeth and I share a love of color. We often gravitate to the same textiles and art. I think this project is a wonderful reflection of our joint vision for a vibrant home that has refined style, yet still embraces the family full of young children that live there.” Making the home an inviting place to entertain and host friends and family were also top priorities for the couple, so choosing the right seating and living space arrangements were paramount. “A home is how you choose to live in it,” adds Elizabeth. The team opted to switch the dining room into a den, and the den into the dining room, for example. “I didn’t want to walk in my front door and see my family lounging in the living room as the first thing. It just made more sense for our family.” The Newtons began collecting art pieces from different artists around Charlotte and discovered just how complete it can make the rooms in your home. With the help of Holly and Hidell Brooks Gallery, Best of Guide 2014 Urban Home Charlotte 69
Elizabeth found pieces that fit perfectly into the spaces that needed a little something extra. Her children’s portraits, done by local artist Jackie Roche, are placed alongside several other local artists’ paintings and her face jug pottery collection from potters around the south can be found here and there throughout the home. “I like to mix old with new,” Elizabeth explains. The love of color can be seen throughout the home as well, with a spring-green kitchen, complete with a wood burning brick oven, a classic combination of bold blue and vibrant orange pop in the keeping room and bright pink and turquoise are toned with calming neutrals in the living room at the front of the home. “My interiors are
70 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014
often punctuated by the use of bold colors and abstract art mixed with antiques and vintage pieces,” explains Holly. “It is these layers combined with personal objects that make the house a home.” Drawing pieces from favorite spots around Charlotte, like Slate Interiors, Darnell & Co. and Cotswold Market place, including custom pieces from Holly’s workroom, the pair quickly finished the total look. The design took just three short months to complete, an unusual feat according to Holly. “Elizabeth is one of the best decision-makers I’ve ever worked with,” she explains. “She knows what she likes and is confident in her choices.”
The Newtons began collecting art pieces from different artists around Charlotte and discovered just how complete it can make the rooms in your home.

Making the home an inviting place to entertain and host friends and family were also top priorities for the couple, so choosing the right seating and living space arrangements were paramount. The finished basement offers a respite from weekly activities, with a separate living room and bathroom, and even a “man-cave” for Rick. An all-brick wine cellar doubles as a game room and the long hallways that branch off of the rooms are paneled in wood with a more modern feel. The sprawling backyard can be seen from the front of the house through soaring windows and a terrace on the main level is done in hand-laid stone, while the balcony off of the hallway upstairs offers a birds-eye view of the wooded backyard all-year-round. When asked what her favorite room in the home is, Elizabeth quickly answers the living room. “Hot pink and turquoise are two of my favorite colors, “ says Elizabeth. “But the room is simple, and with the sunlight that comes in, I feel like it’s a great room in which to decompress from the day. It’s easily one of my favorite rooms in the home.”v 72 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014

The Smart Woman’s Guide to Retirement: Invest for the future Jennifer Green Women who prioritize investing for retirement are more likely to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with financial security.
Although women face unique challenges when it comes to retirement planning, there are more resources available to support women’s investment and retirement decisions than ever before. Setting aside sufficient assets, while a common concern for all, is particularly important for women. In a 2012 study published by the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI), only four in ten women who are at least 55 years old believe they have done a good job in planning financially for their retirement years. And fully one-quarter of women have little to no confidence in the way they have planned so far. A comprehensive plan for retirement is well within women’s reach. It may mean adjusting current approaches to investing and money management, though, and certainly requires careful planning. To start, it’s important to look at some of the obstacles women face when investing for retirement, along with solutions for individuals and companies. Women’s investing challenges Women face multiple obstacles when it comes to planning for retirement. First and foremost is life span. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women, on average, live five years longer than men (80.5 versus 75.5 years old); and living longer requires more assets to live on. Women also generally earn less than men in the course of a lifetime. This is not only because of the well-documented income discrepancy between the genders, but also because of the opportunity cost when women leave the workforce to care for family.
Financial providers who make assumptions about a woman’s risk tolerance can also shortchange her in the retirement planning arena. Christine Cortes, Regional Sales Manager at PNC Investments, describes: “The need for financial security isn’t any different for women than for men, but what motivates women to invest is very different.” A landmark 2001 study by finance professors Brad Barber and Terrance Odean, found that women’s risk-adjusted returns beat men’s by an average of about one percentage point annually. Healthcare concerns also factor into a woman’s long- range financial planning. According to IRI, projected lifetime medical expenses for a woman starting at age 65 in 2011 were $417,550 – 13% higher than that of a 65-year-old man. Plus, women are more likely to require long-term care and therefore need to invest for it. Another potentially negative impact on a woman’s plans for retirement is divorce. Divorce can disproportionately negatively impact women, especially those who have earned less than their spouse. For all of these reasons, says Cortes, women who prioritize investing for retirement are more likely to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with financial security. Solutions for a better retirement Women can mitigate these issues is by working longer and taking advantage of their company’s retirement plan. In fact, IRI research shows that in 2012, 43% of boomer-era women anticipated retiring at age 65 or later. The advantages of

working beyond age 65 include more time to accumulate assets, as well as continued access to employee benefits – an advantage in reaching retirement-asset goals for companies with retirement benefits. This is true of owners, or employees who work there. “One of the first things we ask executives and business owners when sitting down to create a retirement plan is, ‘What do you want to get out of it?’” says Amy Kuntz, senior vice president and director of distribution for PNC Institutional Asset ManagementSM. “They may be focused on their own retirement, or they may just think it’s the right thing to do for employees. Either way, we can make it a win–win situation.” Options include profit-sharing plans, SEPs, SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k) plans and defined-benefit plans. An appropriate approach depends on several factors, including number of employees, the amount the company will contribute and the age or income differentials between owners and employees. In all cases, owners can participate (and probably should) to enjoy the tax and retirement benefits the various plans offer. For business owners, planning for retirement can be even more complex, as their retirement plans are inextricably linked to plans for their companies. They know there will come a day when it’s time to step aside, and their retirement plan should include an exit strategy – whether that’s relinquishing day-to-day management or completely divesting. No matter where you are in the retirement planning process, PNC can be helpful.v Jennifer Green is the Wealth Director for PNC Wealth Management in the Western Carolina Region. Eclectic Casual Style
trent haston Eclectic casual style makes use of all of a room’s little spaces, especially those that are normally forgotten.
I sometimes think people feel bound to one particular style when decorating or remodeling their homes. Someone may define their style as traditional or contemporary, and do everything to stay in that respective box. However, one of my favorite styles, which I’m seeing more of lately, is eclectic casual. I really love this cool, relaxed hodgepodge of styles. It’s always exciting and unpredictable, and gives a home a lot of character and personality. So what does eclectic mean? Dictionary.com defines it as “selecting or choosing from various sources” or “not following any one system… but selecting and using what are considered the best elements of all systems.” Seems pretty simple, but how does one accomplish this style successfully? If not careful, it can be easy to go overboard, losing cohesion and fluidity. The last thing you want is a messy array of fixtures and décor that
88 Urban Home Charlotte Best of Guide 2014
resembles a flea market. Here are some simple ways to achieve this eclectic casual style. I think it adds a lot of visual interest to a room when you mix a variety of materials in unexpected combinations. For instance, break up a stone floor with reclaimed wood inlays. Or, place a collage of clean frames over an antique sofa. The key to this is balance. If you like worn-in pieces, offset them with more modern ones. An heirloom rug and a modern painting can work well in the same room. Strategic use of color is probably the easiest way to accomplish an eclectic look. The key to this is maintaining a neutral backdrop, and then using small pops of color in different areas around the room. You could also successfully mix pattern and scale by keeping a consistent neutral theme. Besides color, consider adding different textures to a room.
Nubby rugs, tactile fabrics, and peeling paint are all elements that can make a room feel inviting and comfortable. An eclectic style is always personal, so showcase what you love. Incorporate items from your travels, old items that have sentimental value, and special keepsakes. This gives a room character and makes it authentic to you. Be creative in how you display your personal items. For example, a special seashell collection can be displayed in many different ways, such as amassed in a beautiful vase or arranged into a hanging mobile. Displaying personal items creatively will bring due attention to them. Eclectic casual style makes use of all of a room’s little spaces, especially those that are normally forgotten. One example of this that I love is adding drawers and/or other storage concepts in stairwells, in breakfast alcoves, and in dead-wall spaces. This adds function to typically non-functional spaces and makes ordinary spots enchanting. Another example is turning high-traffic areas (ie. hallways) into useable spaces, such as cozy reading nooks. A comfy chair, small table, and lamp don’t take up much room, but add a cute practical area in an otherwise unused space. The best thing about the eclectic casual style is that there are really no rules. Simply follow these guidelines, and have fun making your home more interesting and more you! v Trent Haston is CEO of Andrew Roby and has spent many years in project management, focusing on style and craftsmanship for custom home projects.
