s we are adjusting to a new and hopefully temporary way of life, it has become overwhelmingly important to discover the silver lining. It is essential to seek out and find the beauty that surrounds us. The timing of our Great Escapes Issue may seem a little ironic. At first glance, you might assume this issue is dedicated to getting away. But in truth, it’s more about creating your own retreat right here. Many of us are now spending an unusual stretch of time at home, so what better occasion to focus on those projects you always wanted to do? And this gorgeous spring weather makes for the perfect backdrop. As many of us are learning how to stay connected to the world from our homes, we share with you ideas and inspiration for better days ahead. For designers Kelley Lentini and Berkeley Minkhorst, it’s not all work and no play. I
nterior design duo Kelley Lentini and Berkeley Minkhorst of House of Nomad share a love of travel and design. They have traveled all over the world and agree that Morocco is their favorite destination for sourcing tribal-chic items for clients and their Myers Park store. “Berkeley and I are obsessed with Morocco—everything about it, the entire vibe,” Lentini explains. “We walk
through the markets and visit with the artisans and feel completely energized.” After starting House of Nomad three years ago, Lentini and Minkhorst began traveling together to source items for their clients. They had been to Mexico and South Africa on buying trips but kept hearing about the incredible markets in Morocco. They embarked on their first trip there in 2018.

“We started exploring the medina in Marrakech and found inspiration at every corner,” Minkhorst says. “The sights, the sounds, the smells—whether you’re a designer or not, it’s so cool.” The medina is the ancient, walled city within Marrakech. Bustling with activity from donkeys to scooters to food vendors, it is home to many souks—or markets—where local artisans sell handmade wares such as intricately designed baskets, tiles, rugs, poufs, and bone-inlay furniture. The items are from all over Africa, so Lentini and Minkhorst are able to stock up on the travel-inspired items sought after by their clientele. “During that first trip, we made a lot of contacts and found amazing things,” Lentini shares. “We felt like we had just dipped our toes in and couldn’t wait to go back and bring back more.”

Morocco is home to a wide variety of artisans who are eager to sell to tourists, but you have to trust your source and know how to negotiate. “You have to have the right relationships,” Minkhorst explains. “There’s a language barrier, there’s a currency exchange, there’s the challenge of shipping—a lot of time and effort goes into acquiring the pieces we want, but it’s what we live for.” The pair will return to Morocco in April for their third excursion to the exotic African country, and they are ready to shop. “We hope to ship back a container full after this trip,” Lentini says. u

reating an escape from the demands of city life has become increasingly important for many homeowners. One SouthPark couple decided to build a beach-chic cabana in their backyard as a relaxing poolside getaway for them and their four children. They engaged Jones & Hedges Custom Builders, architect Christopher Phelps, and interior designer Stephanie Poore for the project, and they knew exactly the look they wanted.
“We vacation in the Charleston area a lot, and The Obstinate Daughter is our favorite restaurant there,” the homeowner says. “We love the vibe, and the decor was our inspiration for the interior of our pool house.” Designer Stephanie Poore’s first priority was to find reclaimed wood to use for the shiplap walls, which were essential in creating the weathered, rustic aesthetic that her clients wanted to achieve. She sourced it from Southend

style Reclaimed in Davidson and wrapped the entire interior of the pool house with it. “The wood was already the perfect color,” Poore explains. “Some pieces had layers of old whitewash, which gave it instant character.” The dark walls, soaring ceilings, and tall windows and doors create the ideal juxtaposition of light and dark, which influenced Poore as she worked with the homeowners to design the space. The fabric and furniture colors are neutral throughout, creating a cool, coastal vibe. To maintain a natural, soothing setting, she selected organic pieces such as a teak root, found in Indonesia, that fits flawlessly as a console in the main room. The husband’s focus was the bar and outdoor cooking area, while the wife’s priorities were the laundry room and bathroom. He wanted ample shelf space for cocktail supplies, an accordion passthrough window for easy entertaining, plus a suitable area for his grills. She requested pretty tile, plenty of hooks, and a Dutch door.
“My client always wanted a Dutch door, so we incorporated that into the laundry room,” Poore explains. “The kids can throw suits and towels through the top of the door into the laundry room or hang them—the whole wall is lined with hooks.” The black-and-white cement tiles in the bathroom are from Cement Tile Shop and have an almost tribal design, contributing to the bohemian feel. The wall-hanging sink has two faucets, a must when their four children plus friends are running in to wash hands. “I think about how to improve my clients’ lives not just aesthetically but functionally,” Poore notes. “The whole point is to create a space that is visually pleasing and makes your life easier.” The luxurious yet understated backyard retreat is as beautiful as it is practical. The hardwood floors have a strong protective coating, the rugs and furniture are made of durable indoor-outdoor materials, and the pillow and upholstery fabrics are

outdoor quality, so they don’t have to worry about kids running in with wet swimsuits. Even the leather chairs have outdoor cushions on the seats. And they use the space all the time. “We love it,” the homeowner affirms. “We can leave the clutter and responsibilities of our house and escape to our getaway in our backyard. Hill Rondero loves when opposites attract. “I am extremely inspired by contrast and juxtaposition,” says the designer and founder of Millicent Design Studio. “Whether in nature or design, it all applies and allows me to create balance in a space.” That balance is apparent throughout Rondero’s work, where she seamlessly blends modern with antiques, and sleek metallic finishes with organic, natural materials. “I’m always inspired by gilded antiques mixed with classic, modern pieces. Likewise, I adore a portrait with a modern edge paired with a vintage art piece found at an off-the-beaten-path shop. With this, we’re able to notice an object’s intrinsic beauty when paired with another object of a very different nature.” But her transitional aesthetic and simple, sophisticated sensibility go beyond the coupling of opposites in her designs. Rondero also loves to layer natural materials such as plants, branches, and textural woods, and at least one piece of edgy or humorous decor in her projects. “This maintains the overall humility and livability of the space, not to take itself so seriously.”

T
he homeowner knows what she likes when she sees it. “It’s one of those things where if I see something that’s beautiful, I’ll find a way to work it into my home,” she says. Which is exactly the design approach the homeowners took when it came to the interior design of their Eastover home. Despite the homeowner’s eye for design, the circa-1964 brick Colonial’s awkward floorplan continued to pose a problem. “The bones of the home were stunning: high ceilings, beautiful windows and light, and the most amazing moldings,” close friend
and interior designer Nicole Mooney says. “But, like many homes of its time, the rooms were somewhat compartmentalized, and the flow was not ideal. The kitchen was still set in the 1970s, and the entire backside of the first floor lacked outdoor access.” After living in the home for two years, learning its nuances and developing a firm list of things they wanted to update, the homeowners enlisted Mooney, architect Kent Lineberger, and builder John Bourgeois of Bourgeois McGinn Builders to design a plan that would not only open up the main floor but also extend the living space to the outdoors through an extensive covered APRIL/MAY 2020 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 55
porch. In addition, Lineberger was tasked with creating mainfloor access to the backyard, which had been a constant issue. “We needed to open up these dead-end spaces and create a flow from side to side across the back of the house so that they could enjoy the views of the backyard while also having enough space to entertain family,” Lineberger says. The backyard slopes steeply down the back of the lot, so Lineberger designed an outdoor living space that cantilevers off the back of the house, giving the feel of a mountain home tucked high into the trees. Hidden outdoor heaters, a large dining table for extended family gatherings, and a lounge space with ample seating by the fire created more living space, a plus for the homeowners, who entertain frequently. The kitchen, which once had Formica counters and a fauxbrick linoleum floor, was transformed into a stunning, allwhite space anchored by the handmade Urban Archaeology tile backsplash, which is layered up to the ceiling. “I’d seen a kitchen designed by Robert Couturier in a magazine,” the homeowner says, “and I just fell in love with it.” A custom hood by Mudwerks complements the Caesarstone counter, custom 56 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | APRIL/MAY 2020

cabinetry, and pair of pendants from Ann-Morris, Inc. Though the homeowner has a great sense of personal style, she knew she could use some help from a professional like Mooney. The homeowner “has impeccable taste in both fashion and interior design,” Mooney says. “When she asked for my help, I couldn’t have been more excited. I knew between our like-minded design styles and attention to detail, the entire project would be a ton of fun and extremely rewarding.” With a fresh layout and open floor plan, Mooney was able to help add layers of details and refine areas of the home. “She has a great eye for design, and several rooms like the living room, dining room, and sitting rooms were already well designed. Seeing her design style in those rooms definitely provided me with inspiration throughout the process. Plus, the home’s original millwork was incredible.” Mooney went to work in the den, which was wrapped in wood paneling. “As much as I love a lacquered den, painting the paneling here was not even a consideration,” Mooney says. “The reddish-brown wood had this warmness to it, making it the ideal backdrop for layering furnishings, textiles, and artwork. I love the way this room came together and how it ties in beautifully with the kitchen.” Bourgeois added a new doorway to the outdoor living space. “John matched the wood APRIL/MAY 2020 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 59

and stain, and it looked like it’d been there forever,” the homeowner says. The Anke Schofield artwork over the fireplace was commissioned through Hidell Brooks Gallery and served as the inspiration for the rest of the room’s interior design. The powder room, which had been reworked during the renovation—“It was excessively large,” Lineberger says—is one where the homeowner displayed her style. “That tile is one of my favorite things,” she says of the Kelly Wearstler selection she found at Ann Sacks. “I thought it would make that room so much fun.” A Cole & Son wallpaper and a mirror by Bunny Williams Home make the powder room playful and elegant. Though the home’s interiors are considered complete, “the home is constantly evolving,” the homeowner says. “I’ve had to curb myself a little with buying anything new,” she laughs. “But if I see something I love, I’ll find a way to work it into my home’s interior design somehow.” u

et the lakefront be the star.” That was the design ethos that Charlotte-based interior designer Teri Thomas encouraged when she worked with her client of more than twenty years on their new vacation home. The married couple, who had recently retired and downsized to a condominium in Charlotte, sought a gathering place for their four adult children, grandchildren, and friends in a location that’s accessible to Charlotte and “had beauty and serenity at its core. We wanted bathing suits and dinner parties to happen in the same space,” the client says. And they decided that Uwharrie Point on Badin Lake, just about an hour from Charlotte, was the right spot for their getaway home. “We both grew up on Lake Michigan, so a lake was enticing to us,” the client says. The couple had never built a house before, so they commissioned Thomas, founder of Teri Thomas Interiors, to expedite the design from the start. “We designed on paper what we thought would be a perfect house,” the homeowner explains. “Teri helped us put together a team of Bruce Clodfelter for landscape design and Don Duffy for architecture, and she attended every meeting, knowing our style and what we were comfortable with. We found an inspiration house online that helped us, too.” Thrilled to be a part of the project’s construction from the ground up, Thomas says, “Collaborating with Don was great because we had a couple of pictures, and he made our ideas stand up off the ground.” With the intent of creating a single-level home that’s casual and suited to three-generational 64 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | APRIL/MAY 2020

family gatherings, Thomas devised a design scheme that accomplished these project goals while exploiting the waterfront locale. “They didn’t want anything that was too fancy for babies and young children,” Thomas says of the five-bedroom home. “They wanted easy living with fewer, bigger spaces.” At the core, Thomas designed a massive living space that includes the family room, dining space, and kitchen. The adjacent porch mirrors these spaces with the kitchen connecting to the grill area, doors in the dining room linking to the outside dining space, and the interior family room expanding to the exterior living room, complete with fireplace and television. The guest foyer and guest hallway leading to three of the guest rooms are set behind the kitchen’s butler’s pantry at one wing of the house, while on the opposite end, the master suite, den, and remaining guest bedroom are tucked behind the living room. “That floor plan lives so well. And then all those doors open up straight out to that porch, which is literally an extension of the indoor space—so you’re living twice as big,” Thomas explains. “And it’s ground level, so you can pull up those retractable screens on that porch and walk out into the yard to the lake.” By employing copious amounts of glass, Thomas incorporated lake views into the interiors. In fact, from the front facade, there are clear sightlines through the house to the lake, which

influenced the interior color palette. “Certainly, the blue design elements reflect the water,” notes Thomas, who says she layered in color with neutrals. “I tried to use color where it made sense. I think having some color and pattern lends a more casual feel.” Similarly, with regard to the materials, Thomas says, “We tried to use materials like wood, concrete, and iron, mixed with a few old pieces so that things didn’t feel too new.” Rather than selecting pristine white tile for the kitchen, she opted for a metallic tile that plays off of the island’s concrete countertop. “I think that people are tending to be a little cookie-cutter, if I may be so bold,” Thomas offers. “To me, that subway tile is a nod to that industrial look; it’s actually a bronze color that felt a little more special and different.” The tile behind the range extends to the ceiling to amplify the height of the space, and it’s capped with a wooden-slab ceiling that elicits a feeling of warmth. throughout the ceilings and on the walls of the living room and den offers a subtle reference to the home’s lakeside locale. Overall, the interior design is grounded in an effort to foster an environment that’s indicative of how this family actually lives. “The design is meant to provide ample opportunities for all to connect and be comfortable together. We have had two Thanksgivings here with fourteen to sixteen people, and everyone felt they had space,” offers the client. “The decor has a more contemporary style with bold light fixtures, hidden sliding doors (to conceal the television), fabric choices, and design that makes you want to sit in every spot in the house. Teri also incorporated our art and helped us pick out some new pieces to give the house character.” The homeowner adds, “Just approaching the house, you can see through to the lake and Uwharrie Forest. That gives us that instant peace and relaxation that a vacation home should be.” u

The late John Byrd designed the traditional and symmetric backyard to complement the home’s classical architecture. Recently, landscape designer Linda Greenberg was brought on to embellish and update it.
J
ohn Bossard approaches every project as a collaboration. “There’s nothing worse than walking into somebody’s home, and there’s zero soul of the client in the space,” the designer says. “Interior design has to be a collaboration. There has to be some kind of way that I can get into the client’s mind or persona or their style and reflect it in their space, so it’s identifiable as theirs and not mine.” With this SouthPark project, though, Bossard had no difficulty striking a harmonious relationship with his client. “My client jokingly refers to herself as a ‘frustrated designer,’” Bossard laughs. The homeowner adds, “I could design my own home, but John takes my ideas and makes them look one hundred times better than I ever would on my own. He’ll teach you things you wouldn’t know. I truly believe it’s because of that collaboration that my house looks like me and not somebody else.” This particular home, which was built in the 1990s, has been evolving since the couple purchased it in 2002.
Renowned architect Milton Grenfell, most notable for his classical, traditional work, designed the home. “The architecture is French provincial and feels very warm and cozy,” says Phil Goodwin of Goodwin Classic Homes. Goodwin worked on the home’s kitchen and master bathroom renovations. “It’s truly a reflection of the homes in the south of France with its symmetry and classical design.” Over the years, the homeowners have enlisted the help of several notable Charlotte designers, architects, and landscape designers to help bring the home to its 2020 iteration. The previous owners had barely touched the backyard, so the homeowners brought in the late John Byrd to design the stunning oasis in the backyard. “I wanted the yard to reflect the architecture of the house,” the homeowner says. “The house is very classic and symmetrical and formal. John designed a yard that mirrored that.” Most recently, landscape designer Linda Greenberg was brought on board to embellish and update it. APRIL/MAY 2020 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 73

Inside, close friend Neal Johnson, who had worked on the couple’s Sea Island, Georgia, home, was tasked with creating the first layer of interior design, which began in the dining room. “It was a difficult room to design because it has no windows,” the homeowner says. To create instant interest, the homeowners commissioned friend and renowned artist, the late Terry Reitzel, to paint a dramatic landscape mural of Charleston. “I’d looked at every Gracie paper, but I thought we ought to have something totally unique in here,” the homeowner says. “My husband is from Charleston, so we wanted scenes that he remembered seeing as a child.” The result is a striking and wholly unique piece of art that elevated the one-time dark dining room. But the real makeover took place in the kitchen, a dark and dated space that was in dire need of updating. “It was an early ’90s, compact kitchen with a very small layout,” Bossard says. He teamed with kitchen and bath designer Caren Bistany, architect Don Duffy, and Goodwin to renovate the 74 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | APRIL/MAY 2020

space. “I told John, ‘I’m all about pretty,’” says the homeowner. “I’m not one of these clean and spare design people. Our jumping-off point was that gorgeous marble I found in Atlanta. I saw this marble that had a thread of that gorgeous Venetian blue-green, and I flipped. I had to have it.” The addition of new custom cabinetry and a wide steel-framed window above the sink not only flooded the space with light, but it also opened up the view to the backyard. The adjacent room to the kitchen needed an uplift, too, as it was rarely used. “I hated that I felt separated from everyone while I was in the kitchen,” the homeowner 76 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | APRIL/MAY 2020
explains. “I wanted to have a space where my husband could relax and watch television and still feel like he was in the kitchen with me.” Bossard reworked the space, which the homeowner previously referred to as a “hodgepodge of stuff,” into a welcoming seating area that complemented the adjacent dining nook. Bossard added Roman shades with fabric from Michael S. Smith for Jasper Furniture & Fabrics to tie both spaces together, while a cozy banquette by Hickory Chair swathed in Lee Jofa fabric, a Julie Neill for Visual Comfort lantern, and a cerused oak table by Bunny Williams complete the dining area’s look.
The homeowner’s eye contributed to the design throughout the home and led her to purchase the pair of loveseats in the living room, which she found during an auction at Christie’s. “I’m constantly scouring online auctions,” the homeowner laughs. Bossard adds, “[My client] is so passionate about decoration and design that it is part of her normal vernacular. She has a great eye for design, but she knows her limitations.” Having noticed how dark the home had become over the years, Bossard added pops of color to balance the homeowner’s selections and to help bring

Charlotte’s newcomers bring new ideas in home design to the Queen City.

ombining the gentility of the South with the robust lifestyle of a world-class city, Charlotte’s real-estate landscape is responding in kind, answering the call for more modern and diverse styles suited to fit residents’ changing needs. We sat down with Cottingham Chalk CEO Daniel Cottingham and relocation director Suzanne Lail to talk about what’s driving trends in design and decor. Seeing inside different homes every day, you guys must come across some fantastic interiors. Cottingham: For sure. We are on the front end of a design renaissance in Charlotte, and our agents are seeing more diversity in home design and influences from other places— California-inspired architecture, European finishes, big-city fine art. When homeowners give architects and designers the green light to push the envelope, the results are inspiring. That creativity is now making its way beyond the home and into commercial spaces, which is really exciting. Why do you think this is happening? Lail: More people, more ideas. It’s no secret our city is a popular destination, and every day we work with people who are moving to Charlotte from other cities, looking for their own little piece of home here. Previously, they’ve had to create that for themselves, but recently, the opportunities for people to move right into homes that match their tastes have grown exponentially. 86 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | APRIL/MAY 2020

Is there a particular area that may have a more significant influence on design than others? Lail: When we hear about relocating corporate headquarters, we picture everyone at a company packing up their families and moving. But in reality, though some folks will relocate, a larger number of new people will be hired and brought in from all over the globe. So you shouldn’t necessarily expect a disproportionate amount of influence from one particular location—it will come from a variety of places.
What’s to come? Cottingham: This is only the beginning. The creativity we see today is the tip of the iceberg. As Charlotte grows out of its “big small-town” identity and enters world-class city status, we are going to see an explosion in diversity of style and design. Each new idea inspires others to express themselves—a snowball effect. As long-time Charlotteans draw inspiration from newcomers, the result will be a more imaginative city that attracts even more people.

ou’ve often heard that the secret to real estate is location, location, location. But the surefire way to seal the deal—and at top asking price—is to ensure potential buyers fall in love at first sight. Could your home look more modern without a complete renovation? Could it appear bigger without extensive construction? The art of home staging not only makes your home stand out against other competing listings, but it allows potential buyers to picture themselves in your home—a critical connection that turns into dollars. According to the 2019 Profile of Home Staging report from the National Association of

REALTORS® Research Group, 83 percent of buyers’ agents noted that buyers could more easily visualize a staged property as a future residence. In comparison, 25 percent said staging resulted in a 1 to 5 percent increase in dollar value over non-staged properties. Top agent Christine Hotham, a NC & SC Broker/Realtor® at Helen Adams Realty who also manages her own team at Hotham Homes, says that investing in the services of a professional stager is the best money homeowners can spend to update their house for today’s market, where current home buyers are looking for new construction or already-renovated move-in-ready homes to suit their busy lifestyles.

A fresh, sleek, clean, and well-kept look adds to the buyers’ belief that the home has been well taken care of.” In staging, the concept of less-is-more goes a long way. “The goal is to depersonalize the home and make the aesthetic more in line with a model home. Staging is done from the perspective of the doorway, so buyers can get an immediate feel for the spaciousness of the room as well as the possibilities of how to mold that space to fit their desires.” Hotham suggests decluttering and cleaning as a first step in the staging process, then moving on to consider fresh paint, cool and eclectic furniture, and trendy accessories arranged in a way
that maximizes natural light and unencumbered walkability between rooms. “The shape of a new lampshade, mixed metals, an updated coffee table, or cowhide rug—these details can set a totally different tone to a home.” She also reiterates the importance of street presence as a pivotal factor in buyers’ first impressions, including a clean and tidy exterior, fresh door paint, and potted plants. Hotham brings in a professional stager for consultations on each of her listings, and the homeowner can elect to take their advice and implement suggestions or opt to hire the stager to prepare for listing. According to Hotham, the money is well spent, as the investment is quickly recouped by the resulting higher closing price, especially in a robust economy where many houses are being sold within a day of, or even before, hitting the market. “The old adage that you rarely get a second chance to make a first impression is so true in real estate. CROSS-STATE BBQ ESCAPES By Jim Noble Photography by The Plaid Penguin
With the hint of spring in the air and the thought of summer around the corner, we all get the itch to get out of town, to take the first true break since the busy start of the year. The warm air signals a slowdown in the fast pace of life and all of its great responsibilities. While spring in Charlotte is a delightful break in and of itself, it’s always nice to escape for a few days. Birmingham is my family’s top escape destination right now, where we visit our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. But my second favorite escape is to drive the North Carolina roads I grew up on, riding alongside my dad on his furniture sales trips and stopping
94 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | APRIL/MAY 2020
at the roadside restaurants where he became a regular during his travels. My love of barbecue began on those trips. Of course, some of those restaurants have since closed. But the great thing about barbecue in North Carolina is that the tradition is still very much alive. A cross-state trip will take you to some of the best barbecue restaurants in the entire country. At the top of my Carolina-barbecue-escape list is Honey Monk’s Lexington BBQ, less than an hour’s drive from most parts of Charlotte. I now count the Monks as close friends, as they were instrumental, and incredibly gracious, in helping me to realize my dream of opening Noble Smoke. Just writing about it, I can taste their tender, lightly sauced pork shoulder.
“A CROSS-STATE TRIP WILL TAKE YOU TO SOME OF THE BEST BARBECUE RESTAURANTS IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.” Next, I’d head to Stamey’s, which is just up the road in Greensboro. Its barbeque sandwich is often voted the best in North Carolina. Charlie, Chip, and Carver Stamey have carried on the legacy, which started way back in 1930 by Warner Stamey, who was the first person to serve hush puppies with his barbecue. Heading farther east to the small town of Dudley, about a three-hour ride from Greensboro, you’ll find Grady’s. Husbandand-wife team Stephen and Gerri (two of the nicest people I’ve ever met) prepare whole hog, pit-cooked barbecue with Gerri’s delicious recipes for sides like butter beans, steamed cabbage, black-eyed peas, and collards. But don’t leave without a helping of the luscious banana pudding. You’re probably already feeling full, but there is one more eastern North Carolina spot I wouldn’t pass up on this trip. Pete Jones opened The Skylight Inn on his family’s farm in Ayden when he was just seventeen years old, and it has since become emblematic of Eastern Carolina barbecue. Pete passed away in 2006, but his family continues the legacy. And you’ve likely
heard of his grandson, Sam, who opened his own restaurant, Sam Jones BBQ, in Winterville. The truth is, no matter which direction you’re heading in North Carolina, you can easily find some great barbecue along the way. And the places I’ve just named are far from the only ones you should consider. We’ve compiled some of the stories of our state’s barbecue icons in the Legends section of noblesmokebarbecue.com, and honor them at the Legends Counter in the restaurant. My hope is that they will encourage you to explore some of North Carolina’s small towns and the family-owned establishments you pass along the way. You never know who you’ll make friends with or what new love you’ll discover.u

When it comes to renovations, I have noticed that master bedrooms are sometimes the last rooms to be completed. But, honestly, they should be the first. There is nothing better than a retreat, a place to escape. For this project, I worked with the Bokases, who are longtime clients. The renovation was full of little details that needed to be well orchestrated and timed, but the result? A small piece of heaven.

We took out all of the dark, heavy furniture and created a sleek, bright, clean, and modern feel. The upholstered bed was custom made, as was everything in this space. Floating side tables with hidden interior USB cables and outlets with sleek pendants hang overhead. We added a trim detail to the walls that lines up with the wall-mounted side tables. Continuing the floating look, local woodworker Jacob Wolfe created hidden drawers with a little resting place for an accessory or two along the side walls. He also

constructed a daybed under the window, mounted to the wall and with a custom mattress for a little daytime reading. The name of this game was floating. Most everything was off the ground to show off one of my favorite Stark wall-to-wall carpets. The pattern pulls all of our colors together without being overwhelming.
When accessorizing this space, I chose to keep it simple with the focal point being a custom piece of art by Keith Keim over the bed, a unique nesting side table, plenty of like colors, and highly textured pillows on the daybed. This room is one of my favorite master bedrooms and a place I would surely sneak off to for a little “me” time.u

With a strategic dispersal of pigment into a 200-gallon tank of water, he photographically captures the billowing color colliding into a soft yet explosive choreography. A recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts grant, Keever has been living and working out of his New York studio for many years. He has exhibited extensively throughout the country and abroad, recently in both London and South Korea. Keever’s work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, Microsoft, Bank of America, and Philip Morris.
