reetings from maternity leave. Three children under the age of three has proven more challenging than I could have ever imagined, so please excuse any errors you may find! While I am fully immersed in postpartum bliss, including diapers, bottles, and pumping on a revolving track, we have another beautiful issue to present—our Great Gatherings Issue— a celebration of coming together with friends and family. Katherine Weeks Mulford, one half of the amazingly talented team behind Addison Weeks, loves to entertain during the holidays. Mulford shares how she preps for holiday parties and let us in on her gift exchange, which was as impeccably designed as her pieces are (page 24). And who better to ask about the best gifts than designers who scour local stores and vendors for the perfect piece to complete a client’s home? We tasked five local designers with choosing gifts and putting their own personal touches on them with gift wrap. The result is a gift guide worth checking out (page 18). This issue is all about repurposing and reusing to create beautiful and comfortable spaces for families to gather together during every season of their l ives. For visionary architect Frank Smith and builder Phil Goodwin, they could see past their clients’ rundown Eastover home and envision the endless possibilities. It was designer Kathryn Dixon’s finishing touch to the project that resulted in a sophisticated upgrade of a home that many would’ve razed instead of embracing its stunning architectural details that make it unique (page 86). Nearby, architect Ken Pursley and designer Bronwyn Ford transformed a client’s Eastover home by utilizing the homeowners’ existing pieces. By repurposing them, Ford was able to create a design that was warm and inviting and ideal for entertaining friends and family for years to come (page 62). Finally, designer Kelley Vieregg’s clients came to her with a dated, circa-1971 home in Foxcroft that needed serious updating. Together with architect Susan Dudley and Alair Homes, Vieregg gutted the interior, leaving a blank canvas for the team to install a clean and sophisticated—but ultimately comfortable—interior for the growing family (page 74). With time off this winter, now might be a great time to visit our Southern neighbor, Atlanta. Writer and travel expert Sarah Crosland dishes on everything ATL, including the top places to dine and stay, but, more importantly, where to shop—with a focus on home design and decor that you do not want to miss (page 42). Despite the sleep deprivation and nonstop toddler corralling, I’m trying to remind myself that these days are fleeting and to hold onto them as tightly as possible. I wish you and yours a joyous holiday season and a very Merry Christmas filled with precious moments that will transform into cherished memories you’ll look back on for years to come. Cheers!

When it comes to entertaining, Katherine Weeks Mulford, co-founder of Addison Weeks, knows how to bring the fun and style. Planning for her holiday gift exchange, she knows her party priorities: fun guests, good music, and a signature cocktail. This calls for a mix of childhood friends and new friends, including a conceptual artist and a ballroom dance instructor. As well, a selection of holiday tunes from her extensive record collection is a must. As for the cocktail, “A holiday brunch calls for bubbles,” Mulford says.

As friends gather at Mulford’s Myers Park home, they’re greeted with prosecco and pomegranate cocktails wrapped in embroidered linen napkins created by Charlotte artist Stephen Wilson. Combine juices then divide among four champagne flutes. Add one teaspoon of sugar to each glass and stir until dissolved. Fill with prosecco and add some pomegranate arils for garnish.

“We may repurpose them to meet our needs, but we always include family heirlooms in the mix.” This practice of blending old with new is apparent throughout Mulford’s thoughtfully appointed home. In the dining room, her grandmother’s crystal chandelier dangles over a large marble- topped table that her mother purchased in France decades ago.

Mulford sets the table with a variety of new and vintage china and crystal complemented by heirloom silver—a wedding gift from her husband’s family. She adds pops of color with crisp monogrammed linens, fresh floral arrangements by John Lupton Events, and, of course, some Addison Weeks brass dogwood branch “sitabouts” that were designed in collaboration with interior designer Barrie Benson. A consummate hostess, Mulford includes beautifully packaged party favors at each place. Guests dine on delectables prepared by Sarah Wrenn of Copain Gatherings before retreating to the living room to exchange gifts. Mulford’s penchant for mixing old and new seems to influence her social life, too. “Nothing makes me happier than when my old friends and new friends meet and hit it off,” Mulford shares. Every October, thousands of the country’s top interior designers and home furnishings retailers descend upon High Point, North Carolina, for the world’s largest home furnishings market. I served as one of eight international “Style Spotters” selected by High Point Market Authority as a market ambassador and trend forecaster. After scouring thousands of new products and walking countless showroom miles, I found that one of the most prominent trends

emerging from High Point Market this fall is a return to craftsmanship and using furniture as art. From multiple mixed materials in case goods to sculptural shapes in upholstery, the devil is in the details. Statement hardware is showing up across categories, while even sofa arms are creating interest with architectural shapes. No longer is art limited to the walls; furniture is taking its turn at creating interest and dimension in a space with form meeting function.

Patrick Lewis approaches all projects as one big collaboration. “It’s never just me telling the client what they need to do,” Lewis says. In fact, he says, the beginning stages of the design process feel largely like an interview. “I’m trying to really drill down to find out what the client is drawn to in terms of design and function.” That process begins with a meeting in Lewis’ Dilworth office where he spreads out dozens upon dozens of images of rooms, pieces of furniture, accessories, fabric swatches, and more along a massive 10-by-4-foot table. There, his client combs through and chooses items that speak to him or her visually or emotionally. It’s only then that Lewis begins his work, seamlessly combining each one to create his signature classic and timeless yet approachable aesthetic. That look oftentimes begins with a neutral base, which 6 Lewis layers with varying textures via fabrics, finishes, and wallcoverings that result in a sophisticated but livable look. “Over the years, my work has become a lot more modern and more driven by solid color and texture and less pattern,” he says. “My aesthetic is founded on a simplicity approach: I like things modern and classic in design but also practical for everyday life.”

hen a Charlotte couple went to Pursley Dixon Architecture looking for a new build on a small footprint, Ken Pursley was eager to take on the project. Fans of the architecture firm’s work, the clients were moving from an uptown condominium to a small lot in Eastover and felt confident that Pursley’s team could create the ultimate living space for them. The kicker? Every square inch of the home had to be beautiful and functional. Pursley was undaunted by the challenge and called on their
in-house interior designer, Bronwyn Ford, to help bring their vision to fruition from start to finish. “It was refreshing to be asked to design something small but with a high level of integrity,” Pursley says. “It’s a fun challenge to design a house with an ambitious program on a tight lot. Much like designing a yacht, every inch must be considered and thoughtfully utilized to maximize the efficiency of the planning.” Ford’s biggest portion of the project presented some challenges of its own, though none that she couldn’t handle. “Once in the interior design phase, we had to repurpose or reuse as many pieces as possible from their existing Charlotte condo,” she says, DECEMBER 2019 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 65
“which is not typically a problem, but the new home’s architecture, layout, and scale were vastly different than their old. We were able to create a fresh, more modern vibe with new upholstery and pillows.” Over the next two years, Pursley and his team poured their creativity into building a beautifully functional home for the couple. The narrow lot was in a desirable section of Eastover that allowed the couple to walk to their favorite places on Providence Road and enjoy the beautiful street views out their windows. Still, it was elevated from the road to offer more privacy. The downstairs master bedroom was built in the back of the home to provide further privacy, complete with a hidden courtyard 66 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019
and a covered porch just outside. With a portfolio of ideas from the couple in hand, Pursley and Ford were able to marry the clients’ wishes with the firm’s expertise and design-savvy. “The wife had wonderful images and ideas that were easily folded into a smaller home design infused with rich detail,” Pursley says. Ford adds that since the firm offers both architecture and interior design services, the opportunity to employ both provides a particular satisfaction in completing a vision. “Our designers work closely with the architects to ensure that the soft goods specified for the home are cohesive with the overall aesthetic vision from the onset,” she says. “In the end, we hope and truly feel that it’s tailored to that specific homeowner.”

Pursley and his team, as they do in each project, paid particular attention to the architectural details that make a home with a smaller footprint feel equally as open and airy as a larger home. This includes highlighting sightlines alongside the use of details that help the eye move smoothly from room to room throughout the home while adding a special touch to each. As an example, Pursley points out his favorite room. “I love standing behind the kitchen island looking toward the street,” he explains. “There is a rich architectural layering that charms the eye as it moves 68 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019
toward the bay window on the front. The plan is open, but the beams of the kitchen, the arch of the dining room, and the plaster coffers of the living room define each of these spaces uniquely. Those features act as speed bumps that break down the long narrow footprint into spaces that are comfortable and thoughtfully proportioned.” Ford was able to repurpose a large amount of the couple’s previous pieces in the new home with some creative design, including even just the simplicity of the color palette. “We wanted to include accessories that would
make the large furniture pieces and architecture look elevated,” she explains. “Simply showcasing the more formal antique pieces against a subdued, neutral backdrop allowed them to be distinctive and interesting.” Custom sideboards in the picture window were layered with simple minimal accessories that added interest without distracting from the views of the gardens beyond. “I love the Catbird chaises we had custom made to fit into the side window box in the living room, too,” Ford says. “It is a wonderful spot to sit and enjoy the sunshine and observe the street

view while being tucked comfortably inside the house.” In the upper lounge, Ford created a cozy and moody space to create a tension of contrast to the rest of the home, which is very light and bright. “I like to create a tension that makes everything in the room more interesting as a result of being 70 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019
paired together. Whether that’s light/dark, old/new, or traditional/modern, my belief is that good design is not about creating perfectly coordinated, idealistic rooms, but instead creating luxurious, comfortable spaces that can be lived in and appreciated for their imperfections.” u

Vieregg loves to create small nooks throughout a home where someone can enjoy a cup of coffee or curl up and read a book, so she designed this intimate area by the bar to unwind with a glass of wine or read the morning newspaper. OPPOSITE: To open up the original concrete-slab sunroom, architect Susan Dudley vaulted the ceiling and added shiplap to create interest. Vieregg then layered in varying textures through limestone flooring, hair-on-hide rug with leather binding, Belgian linen upholstery by Verellen, and a custom jute-tassel chandelier.

osephine Jones found the home online. Tired of their existing home’s lack of privacy, Jones and her family were looking for something that was in a quieter yet still kid-friendly neighborhood. This Foxcroft home checked all of the boxes. When the mom of three went to see it, though, it was clear that it had not been updated or renovated since it was built in 1971. “There was lime-green shag carpeting in the sunroom and jungle-print wallpaper in the kitchen with green appliances,” she says. Despite the dated interior,
Jones could see the home’s potential. “It had some really appealing qualities. A great backyard. I loved that it was similar to a ranch, long and wide with the master bedroom downstairs. I’m the type of person who likes to imagine what can be done with a home, and I could see so much potential here.” While Jones, who purchased the home in 2011, has an eye for design, she knew that she needed to enlist the help of a professional to modernize the home. She hired architect Susan Dudley, who then referred Jones to designer Kelley DECEMBER 2019 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 77
TOP: The side entry of the home is more used than the front door, so Vieregg wanted the space to be practical but also well designed. John Busbin designed the custom cabinetry to hide away all of the family’s everyday items like jackets and shoes, then Vieregg layered in a vintage Turkish rug, an antique bench, a mirror from LaDonna Antiques & Interiors, and an antique Biedermeier chest from Darnell & Company to complete the look. BOTTOM: Vieregg intentionally designed the laundry room with a light, bright color palette. The white quartz countertop, custom cabinetry by Busbin Cabinetry, wall sconce, and brushed-nickel hardware create a warm, sophisticated look. OPPOSITE: The bar area on the other side of the sunroom serves as one of those nesting places Vieregg loves to create in a home. Vieregg. Together with Alair Homes, Dudley and Vieregg pulled together a whole-home renovation master plan that would transform the once worn-out home into a modern stunner. Vieregg is no stranger to completing a whole-home makeover. And while the designer is used to projects spanning several months and even a couple of years, there are just a few that sometimes take a little longer. The Jones’ home was one that took three individual renovations before it finally came to fruition. “Initially, we renovated the master bedroom and bathroom and did plans for the kitchen,” Vieregg says. “But as they lived in the house, they started to live in the space differently. For example, the kitchen changed to incorporate the dining room, and we added a
scullery. We never went outside the existing footprint. But we really enhanced the spaces that were there.” One of the most significant components of the renovation was the sunroom (or solarium, as it was referred to on the original architectural plans). “It was such an odd space,” Jones says. “It was one long room with each window covered by these tiny shutters, and lime-green wall-to-wall shag carpeting and a sliding glass door that led into the living room.” But, like Jones, Dudley and Vieregg could see the potential. Dudley vaulted the ceiling of the room and added shiplap siding, which immediately breathed life into the space. Limestone floors replaced the concrete slab, while the coupling of a custom jute-tassel chandelier and DECEMBER 2019 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 79

monochromatic neutral paint color pulled the sophisticated look together. “Intentionally, the color palette and finishes— truly everything we did—was open enough to lend itself to renovation down the road,” Vieregg says. Much of the remaining renovation consisted of gutting bathrooms and replacing the wall-to-wall carpeting throughout, as well as other aesthetic upgrades. But even so, the team was careful to create a timeless look that, despite the length of the renovation, would look seamless.

To play up the home’s inherent 1970s vibe, Vieregg designed the master bedroom headboard with a curved silhouette and swathed it in a Romo blue-velvet fabric that felt glamorous and feminine. “It’s a combo that made the room soothing and relaxing, but still gave it some life,” Vieregg says. OPPOSITE: To create interest and texture in the large master bedroom, Vieregg added the Cowtan & Tout wall covering. “It has this great movement to it, so it created texture and warmth to the bedroom,” she says.

“It’s extremely easy to get derailed in that type of situation and end up with a design that looks like it was done years apart,” Vieregg says. “It doesn’t come without a lot of work and intention. My designs tend to be more classic. I like to make a home curated and collected to make sure it reflects the clients’ personality and stands the test of time.”
Though the project took nearly ten years to complete, the design team and the Joneses were thrilled with the result. “It’s a very elegant family home,” Vieregg says. “Everything we did was intentional so that years from now, it would still be the same approachable and livable home with a nice, fresh sophistication.” u DECEMBER 2019 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 83

The family room provided a challenge for the design team. “There are large ceiling beams, and within the beams there is V-groove molding,” explains Dixon of Smith’s architectural detail. “That molding connects to the bookshelves and fireplace, so it was a tricky design to incorporate.” OPPOSITE: Dixon kept everything neutral in the breakfast area with a table by Tritter Feefer, light fixture by Robert Abbey, and woven chairs by Crate & Barrel. 88 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019

or most people, the home was a complete teardown. After all, the Eastover home was almost one-hundred years old, but, more than that, it had extensive foundation and structural damage from termites, and faulty work had been completed on it over the years. But when it comes to preserving older homes in Charlotte—not to mention much of the Southeast—architectural designer Frank Smith and builder Phil Goodwin often take a unique approach. “I have a love of old houses,” Goodwin says. “They have stories to tell. Homes with a history and wonderful character yet with all of the comforts of modern construction technology are what I love. Taking an old house with its history and restoring and preserving it for generations to come is immensely satisfying.” DECEMBER 2019 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 89
Goodwin, along with Smith and interior designer Kathryn Dixon of Circa Interiors, were enamored with the circa-1930s Colonial home’s character and bones. The team could see so much potential in a renovation with fresh interiors versus building from the ground up that they put their heads together to create a seamless, modern design from the architectural details to the textiles that truly brought the old beauty back to life. 90 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019
While the team saw serious potential in the home, they were not naive to the problems the old home presented for them. Among the massive renovations were removing the entire roof and entire rear exterior wall, adding a third floor with new dormers, replacing all millwork, flooring, wall, and ceiling surfaces, as well as completely replacing the circular staircase and salvaging the original Buckingham slate roof. “Frank did an excellent job enhancing and enlarging the
house significantly to meet the needs of the new owners,” Goodwin says. “And yet he stayed true to the original Colonial Revival architecture of the home as well as the historical context of the neighborhood.” Smith looked at the original design and instantly recognized proportion issues. “I felt like the height and width ratios were awkward,” he says. “The home looked so flat and wide. I saw the opportunity to adjust it and tweak it slightly

TOP: Dixon chose a pair of marble-top consoles with a brushed silver leg to bookend the windows in the dining room. A pair of architectural prints adds a dose of modernity to the semi-traditional space. BOTTOM: Dixon’s goal with the butler’s pantry was to “make it dramatic and handsome.” The designer wrapped the space in a rich blue grasscloth accented with trim painted in a high gloss of the same hue. The door leading to the basement is swathed in a luxurious wool by Schumacher and punctuated with antique brass nailhead trim. OPPOSITE: The Cowtan & Tout draperies with valances feature a flame stitch with an ivory background. “They brought in the yellow and gray and worked well with the rug,” Dixon says.
but also save the whole house.” The addition of the third floor allowed Smith to add extra square footage without expanding the footprint, which resulted in a more proportionate look. “By doing that, I changed the proportion of the rooflines to be more in line with a ratio that works with everyone’s definition of beauty.” The original footprint was common during the 1930s: a box with four rooms on the main living area. But Smith loves to create seamless, circular paths that allow people to move from room to room without ever dead-ending in one space. “I love to create interesting flow patterns, which not only give you a flexibility of flow between rooms but also delineates public and private spaces,” he explains of reworking the floorplan. “They’re these private spaces embedded in the structure in such a way that when you’re in the public spaces, you don’t notice them. It also provides interesting enclaves and makes the house feel bigger.” Rooms such as the scullery, home office, bar, and the area that accesses the basement are all transition spaces that are somewhat hidden from the main living areas but allow that free flow from room to room. It was Dixon who provided the finishing touches to the renovation. “The homeowners’ previous residence was very traditional, very dark,” Dixon explains. “It was really important for them that this home feel lighter, fresher, softer, and prettier. They wanted it to be calming and pretty both in the architecture and the interiors.” 92 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019

To create interest among the ivory and cream color palette in the sunroom, Dixon incorporated a high contrast accent color with the chenille throw from Circa, pair of table lamps by Barbara Barry, and metal stool by Arteriors. OPPOSITE: Dixon wanted the study to feel masculine but comfortable, so she opted for Farrow & Ball Pigeon for the paint color and layered in masculine fabrics such as heathered-wool draperies in a houndstooth pattern and a chocolate-brown velvet loveseat.

To achieve this, Dixon opted for a serene color palette of creams and blues and grays. “And that really drove the furnishings,” she says. “The homeowner really responded to fabric, which I do as well. I’m really inspired by fabric and texture. She didn’t want a lot of pattern, but she did want interest, so texture and subtleties of tone were important. We used a lot of linen, velvet, and wool, but not a whole lot of silk.” In an effort to let Smith’s architectural details shine throughout the home, the majority of the paint colors were by Farrow & Ball. “They’re such complex paint colors,” Dixon says. “They change depending on the light in the room, which helps warm or cool a room’s overall aesthetic.” Dixon kept the interiors transitional with a mix of old and new, including antiques she pulled
from Circa’s showroom floor, stating that Circa owner Cindy Smith “taught me that in a home with stature and grace such as this, it’s important to have antiques layered in.” For example, the living room features a pair of early nineteenth-century Italian chests that Cindy Smith found during her scouting travels abroad. In the end, the merging of Smith’s architectural details with Goodwin’s creativity as a builder and Dixon’s elegant interior- design touch breathed new life into the old Colonial. “We had the opportunity to save this old house, enhance the charm, and give it a new future,” Smith says. “It takes an extra special appreciation for a structure like that to do those things that will let it perform for another century.” u DECEMBER 2019 | HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE 95

A “great gathering” means different things to different people. For some, it could be catching up with old friends over a bottle of wine and charcuterie at home. Alternative Accommodations This is an obvious one, but it is something that should be well thought out. Remodeling the whole house means you’ll want to put your furniture in storage and stay somewhere else while it’s happening. If you’ve bought a fixer-upper, do as much of the remodeling as you can before moving anything into the house. Economies of Scale Remodeling the entire house at once will allow your remodeler to spread out management and overhead costs over all of the spaces you are renovating, potentially saving you money.
The Age of the Home If your home’s plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems are more than twenty years old, they will likely need to be replaced or updated in some way to meet current code requirements, regardless of how big or small the project. Because these things affect all areas of your home, updating them all at once will be easier in the long run.
A whole-house remodel can seem like a lot to take on, but it may be right for you once you weigh all of the advantages against spreading out the projects over many months or even years. Whatever you decide, allow plenty of time to research and plan, so you get a customized remodel that you’ll enjoy for many years to come.u

When it’s time to kick the kids—and all of their friends—out of the family room, why not send them to an area created just for them, a place they never want to leave? That’s what my client and I had in mind for this subterranean space. Once dark and used for storage, we called in contractor Andrew Roby to move walls, add headers, create a bathroom,
116 HOME DESIGN & DECOR CHARLOTTE | DECEMBER 2019
and even build a little wine cellar for Mom and Dad. We ended up with a large and beautiful open space that is well lit and has several “zones.” Using a modular sofa for easy access down the tight stairs, this piece holds its shape and is the perfect position for gaming. The fireplace, once brick, was framed out for a cleaner look using concrete tile, then flanked with floating shelves and a custom storage cabinet with amazing wood detail by Jacob Wolfe.

Light wall colors, a lighter wall-to-wall carpet, and fun wallpaper also help to brighten up the space. One of my favorite pieces is the modern pool table that easily raises to dining height. This multifunctional table saves space and allows for gaming and gathering. With thoughtful planning and ample creativity, this room is now an inviting space where family and friends may never want to leave. u
Tips for creating a subterranean space: • Line up a really good contractor. • Keep your stairwell open until the last minute so furniture pieces easily clear tight corners and fit into the space. • Use modular furniture to allow for easy access and multifunctional furniture to save space. • Add plenty of can lighting and include cozy floor lamps or table lamps.

Using inventively repetitious processes to accrue and layer color, Rosenberg’s interdisciplinary practice of painting, sculpture, installation, food, and performance is at once grounded, meditative, and playful. This is Rosenberg’s first exhibition with Hodges Taylor. The opening reception with the artist will be held on Friday, December 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with an artist talk on Saturday, December 14 at 11 a.m.

Hall created a wonderful variety of art both on paper and with paper: acrylic paintings on paper, watercolors, and collages. A North Carolina native, Hall was a renowned abstract expressionist whose muses were the American and Mediterranean landscape.
