Designer John Robshaw is an artist at heart who has translated his talent into a passion for textile design. Designer Danielle McKim doesn’t have to look very far for inspiration when it comes to designing her home and her client’s homes. “Being inspired by things that I love keeps me creative,” she says. “For me, I buy what I’m drawn to and then figure out how I will make it work. I think this creates a home that is filled with curated pieces that really reflect my style.” Lately, McKim has been inspired by her children and her desire to create a space that inspires creativity. COASTAL CALM If the “urban” vibe of downtown Charleston isn’t quite the getaway you’re looking for, head instead to nearby Seabrook Island. While the look of Seabrook is similar to Kiawah, the vibe is a tad more casual. There are plenty of private homes to rent, not to mention smaller townhomes, villas, and condos available through Seabrook Island Club and Seabrook Island Real Estate. The newly renovated oceanfront pool at the Seabrook Island Beach Club makes beach life even easier with the adjacent Pelican’s Nest or Osprey Café for quick bites to eat, while the two pools provide respite from the hot, sandy beach nearby. Off the sand and surf, Seabrook Island Equestrian offers guided trail rides through the quiet woodland, marsh, and coastal areas. These small group tours are a great way to see the oft-missed parts of the island. 32

In a city like Charleston, hotels are as abundant as churches. So when Emeline opened its doors last July, one might’ve brushed it off as just another hotel. And yet, it’s not. Unlike larger accommodations, Emeline feels intimate and inviting. Much of that timeless vibe stems directly from its classic interiors, which feature a stylish, updated midcentury-modern aesthetic with a dose of Southern charm. Each of the 212 rooms—many of which are suites with timeless midcentury-modern furnishings and decor—feature bespoke embroidered Matouk linens, Red Flower toiletries, and a Crosley turntable with vinyl records to listen to while sipping an old fashioned. Drinks are a must at Emeline’s onsite restaurant Frannie & the Fox, which is abuzz at happy hour with stylish locals and visitors alike. Charleston is a foodie town, and nearby Tempest does not disappoint. Named best new restaurant in January by USA Today’s reader poll, Tempest easily lives up to its title with a menu chock-full of the freshest seafood, often coming straight from the Carolina coast. (The monkfish liver mousse with seasonal compote on buttery brioche is a necessary order, as are the umami tuna bombs, which have inadvertently become one of Tempest’s most popular items.) Afterward, stroll the Battery and end the day with a nightcap on the patio of Frannie & the Fox, where the glow of an oversized fireplace serves as the perfect backdrop—and bookend—to the evening.

Architectural designer Garrett Nelson created a plan inspired by Nantucket homes and E.L. Lutyens’ English manor styling. Lutyens-inspired double-side gables keep the roof massing delicate. AS KELLY AND RICK HOPKINS’ CHILDREN MOVED into their high school years, the couple decided to seek a home that was a little more private and set back from the road than their previous Myers Park renovations. When some friends off of Forest Drive put their home up for sale, the Hopkinses jumped at the chance to start a new renovation project on a quieter street and make it their own. But after discussing the changes they wanted to make, the couple discovered that building a new home made more sense. “I was driving around admiring the design of homes in Charlotte and saw Garrett [Nelson’s] name frequently,” Kelly Hopkins explains. “When I toured a home he worked on for a neighbor of mine, I knew I needed to connect with him for ours.” With that, they enlisted the expertise of Charlotte architectural designer Garrett Nelson, homebuilders Thompson Custom Building, and longtime friend and designer Jolee Fennebresque to collaborate with them on the perfect home for their most current phase of life. “Jolee and I have been friends for a long time, and I have seen her work in various friends’ homes, including in the beginning when she worked with Bill Cooper,” Hopkins says. “Over the years, I feel like I’ve developed an eye for talent and really like working with up-and-comers, and I knew Jolee would not only execute a brilliant design but allow me to be a partner in the process with her.” Hopkins envisioned a home that would be equal parts comfortable and great for entertaining, with formal touchpoints punctuating the design—nostalgia from her childhood homes. “I wanted to keep the essence of what was here originally but also incorporate my vision of a New England beach home into the design,” Hopkins says. “Now, I have never been to Nantucket, but images of the homes there have always inspired me, and after renovating several homes in Charlotte, I felt it was time to make this inspired architecture part of my own home in the South.” Nelson elaborates by adding, “This home has an eclectic style, drawing influence from Nantucket-inspired homes and E.L. Lutyens’ English manor styling. Lutyens-inspired double-side gables alongside traditional Nantucket principles like a cedar shake roof and siding and prominent chimney masses really evoke that emotional connection integral to the project.” HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 39

The “dream team,” as Hopkins refers to them, agreed on an open, clean, and fresh design, from architecture to interiors. This shared vision made it easy to bring things together, even as some elements morphed during the process, as happened in the keeping room and the family room. “We enlarged the family room after construction was underway, so the layout of the room was challenging,” Hopkins recalls. “I wanted the space to be welcoming and family-friendly, but also to have formal elements and room to entertain. We also wanted a TV in the room (I know, I know), and these changes resulted in rethinking the scale of the furniture and the connecting patio. But Jolee and Garrett were wonderful.” Fennebresque commiserates, discussing a few challenges with the keeping room during the project. “The keeping room was tricky because there are no windows, which means you can’t warm the room or make a statement with drapes,” she says. “Instead, we searched elsewhere to create a wow moment; we
thought we landed on it by bringing in hot pink with the pillows or a sofa, but it never felt quite right. So we held off and kept reworking the space.” Eventually, Fennebresque found a unique basket-weavepatterned seagrass wallpaper that brought the perfect amount of Florida-cozy to the room—a nod to Hopkins’ roots and “Palm Beach fresh” aesthetic. For symmetry, a pair of leather-clad doors with nail-head trim was added (one side accessing the back staircase, the other a hidden bookshelf), along with a pretty wool rug. “Scale was critical in the small space, and though we considered four chairs and a table in the middle, we settled on two perfectly scaled sofas on either side,” Fennebresque says. Hopkins brought in several works of art to consider in the keeping room, and the pair chose a piece from a friend— London-based artist Selena Beaudry, represented by Hidell Brooks Gallery. “We brought in the purple from the art in the pillows, and voilà! The keeping room came to life!” HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 41

Despite any hiccups, Fennebresque maintains that the team’s combined efforts gave the project an overall smooth feel while making challenges seem minor at worst. “Kelly and Rick were really thoughtful about planning each room based on its function,” Fennebresque says. “That level of teamwork, from the creatives to the homeowners, really allows a process to go smoothly, and even when you need to adjust, everyone can easily transition, which makes a project joyful.” “You’re only as successful as the people you surround yourself with,” Nelson adds, “and I think this project became a true reflection of all of those partnerships.” Since Hopkins and Fennebresque shared similar tastes in furniture, fabrics, and style, designing schemes for the interiors was a breeze. And though Fennebresque was not involved in the architectural design phase with Nelson, their collaboration resulted in connected yet distinguished

spaces, familiar yet fresh. “Garrett is incredibly gifted,” Hopkins says. “He is amazing to work with and tapped into the look we wanted. He is great with details.” By adjoining repurposed pieces with a fresh design, Fennebresque created the lived-in, everyday look that the Hopkinses hoped for, with the updated look that made it exciting. “Kelly had a wonderful collection of furniture and art from her previous homes, including homes I worked on with her in Palm Beach and Roaring Gap, and incorporating those pieces was elemental and easy,” Fennebresque explains. The working relationship between client and designer meant that each could push the other when needed, and rules of design could be broken for fun. Her husband’s blue den, for example, was 44

a call back to Hopkins’ living room as a child growing up in Florida. Incorporating the couple’s love for Carolina, their honeymoon in Africa, and even a little reminder of Rick Hopkins’ Texas blue-jeans roots, brought the room to a gathered and authentic level. “Interestingly, the hallways in this home turned out so incredibly beautiful. Some have stone floors and thin metal console tables and unusual iron light fixtures, while others house incredible works of art layered onto carefully chosen unique wallpapers,” Fennebresque says. “The silver lanterns hanging in the circular hallways are particularly special.” Together, Fennebresque’s expertise in design and Hopkins’ flair for color and fabrics created spaces that speak volumes about the family’s love for entertaining, comfortable living, and a style that is all their own. “Our goal was to make sure every vista within the home has an intention behind it,” Nelson says. “Our challenge was to make a large master-plan home feel intimate and charming, and by being thoughtful about how this family lived, we were able to achieve that, making sure that every space has a specific function.” u

FOR MARK AND KATHLEEN REYNOLDS, IT’S ALWAYS been about the space. The couple, who lived in Arizona full-time while Mark Reynolds was a first and third baseman for multiple MLB teams, had a seamless, open floorplan with ample outdoor living. “In Arizona, we had a one-story home with a huge outdoor living area on a little over one acre,” Kathleen Reynolds says. “We entertain a lot, so we loved having so much space outdoors, because in Arizona, you’re outside almost all year long.” But when the couple moved to Charlotte in 2015, the lot they purchased in Longview wasn’t wide enough to accommodate a one-story home, and the land itself was a little over one acre. “We loved our home in Longview,” says Kathleen Reynolds of the custom home they built with Arcadia Homes. “We loved that it was very open and airy. But with three young boys and two large dogs, we needed more outdoor
space than that home could afford us.” After four years in their Longview home, their contact with Arcadia showed them a ranch on a two-acre lot in South Charlotte that could bring their dream of an oversized outdoor living space, along with a sizable yard for their young boys to play, to fruition. After razing the existing home, the Reynoldses finally had the land they wanted for their new home. The couple once again enlisted Arcadia to design their new home and tasked Lynn Blackwell to design the interiors. Having worked with the Reynoldses on their previous home, Blackwell knew the couple’s style. “Their first house was light, bright, and airy, and French Tudor–style in architecture,” the designer says. “But for this home, they wanted black and white with neutrals woven through. I tried to add in those neutrals to temper all of the white to make the home more family-friendly.” HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 51
Having Blackwell team up with Arcadia again proved to be a pairing the Reynoldses loved. “We’re not very good at seeing things spatially,” Mark Reynolds says. “Lynn would come in and really help us with the scale and overall flow.” Adds Kathleen Reynolds, “We would send Lynn something we liked, and she would tweak it for us. We knew what we wanted, but we just couldn’t put it down on paper. Lynn did all of that for us, and it was amazing.” Blackwell knew how important it was for the homeowners to integrate the interior and exterior. Hence, she pulled together materials, textures, and a color palette that helped move the flow effortlessly from room to room. “I felt like the inside needed to suit the outside,” she says. “So we added doses of camel color and black iron and a lot of warm woods throughout the entire home to help with the flow.” Black French limestone in the foyer and hallways complement the pattern and peacock stone in the spacious outdoor living space and on the pool deck. Custom-stained hardwood floors extend throughout the main living areas and soften the more industrial accents 52

that Blackwell added. “We told Lynn we wanted a modern house, but still homey,” Mark Reynolds says. “She brought in a lot of modern light fixtures and modern lines but made it comfortable and warm.” Durability and livability were of utmost importance for the family with young children and pets. “We wanted it to be designed beautifully but not feel too precious,” Kathleen Reynolds says. “Lynn really nailed that for us. Everything is kid-friendly but still looks modern and rustic and industrial but comfortable. And we love that.” With an oversized open floorplan, Blackwell and Arcadia seamlessly blended the interior with the outdoors, a priority for the Reynoldses from the outset of their dream-home build. The entire downstairs features a modern, open floorplan, which gives the home an innate airy feeling. It also lends itself to an effortless flow between the everyday living area indoors and the entertaining and casual lounging space just outside. Mark Reynolds knew he wanted a grand twenty-foot, two-story foyer, and so with that, the view from the entry extends straight through the living room to

the spacious backyard. “It draws your eyes in and through the house,” Blackwell says. The backyard is a mecca for entertaining and kid-oriented activities. “We wanted our home to be where all the kids wanted to be,” Mark Reynolds says. A large pool is bordered by plenty of deck space in a peacock paver to allow sunbathing and lounging. The loggia is a highlight as well, with an al fresco dining area and adjacent kitchen space, and a full living room for adults to unwind by the fire. “The whole backyard is really about our kids and entertaining,” explains Mark Reynolds of the Wiffle ball court, putting green, and wide-open green space to run and play. (A golf simulator and theater room inside are also big entertaining spaces for the family.) The outdoor living space was complete with the installation of a landscape design by Garden Design by Tiz. While they loved their Arizona home and the first home they built here in North Carolina, the Reynoldses say they really got it right this time. “We took a lot of the mistakes we made in our first two homes and really fixed them in this house,” Kathleen Reynolds says. “It really is the perfect home for us now.” u

ELIZABETH CRIPPEN AND HER HUSBAND, MICHAEL, WERE ready for a change. The couple and their two kids had lived in and around Rock Hill, South Carolina, for thirteen years. “But we just wanted more space, more privacy, more room to do whatever we wanted,” Crippen says. And so the couple commenced their search for acreage where they could build a home, host larger gatherings with friends, let their kids and dogs roam free outdoors, and raise horses. “We truly wanted a retreat,” she says. “Michael and I are both entrepreneurs and have very demanding schedules, not to mention our kids’ activities and family life. We wanted our home to feel like we could just play all weekend and relax here and not worry about anything.” After finding an existing ranch-style home, the Crippens began their plans to renovate and eventually transform it into
the retreat they’d been envisioning. Not wanting to tear down the existing home, the couple enlisted residential designer Frank Smith to renovate the 1970s French provincial ranch home and design a modern structure that seamlessly tied the outside with the in. “It was a fine house, but all of the rooms were so chopped up,” Crippen says. “You felt really boxed in everywhere you went. No other architect really understood that we wanted the home to feel like we were living outside all the time. Frank understood that I want to be outside even when I’m inside. He sketched out something really quickly on a scratch piece of paper, and Michael and I looked at each other and were like, ‘That’s it.’ I still have that piece of paper today!” Smith’s design added a second story to the home and maintained an outdoor view from every room, a priority for the Crippens. Smith also utilized cedar, glass, and stone to HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 61
The Crippens purchased the live edge wood dining table from Leake Furniture Makers in York, South Carolina. Benson used that as the springboard for the rest of the dining room’s design. To balance the organic stone and wood details, Benson added the Italian Murano orange glass chandelier, dining chairs by Artistic Frame swathed in a traditional but colorful Zoffany Pagoda River fabric, and a Stark carpet with red binding.

To add warmth to the large family room, Benson applied a Phillip Jeffries grasscloth to the walls. Benson introduced color and pattern by adding a pair of Louis XVI bergère chairs upholstered in patterned Dedar linen with Houlès gimp and a pair of William Haines tufted slipper chairs upholstered in ginger velvet with Samuel & Sons trim tape and trim. establish an organic foundation that pulled the outdoors in. “It was like taking each room and changing its identity,” Smith explains. After living in their modern home for three years, the Crippens were ready to work on the interior design, but they weren’t sure where to start. “After living here for a few years, we pieced together some of the rooms by ourselves, and then I got paralyzed,” Crippen says. “I was afraid to buy anything else because I was scared it wasn’t going to be the right thing. I’m terrified of color and pattern because I don’t know how to mix them. But I knew that I wanted the home to be colorful and fun.” A search on social media led the Crippens to designer Barrie Benson. “Barrie can mix anything and pull it off. And she did.” Having worked on her own modern home, tweaking, adding, and layering over the last twenty years, Benson knew the Crippens’ struggle with designing a modern home. “Your first thought is to 64

fill it with all modern furniture, which is what they started to do,” Benson says. “It’s tricky for people to figure out how to design the interiors of a seriously modern house. You don’t want it to be strictly cold and modern. The Crippens wanted it to be a warm, inviting, family house, but also modern. And we have to carefully curate that ourselves. It’s not the easiest thing to work out.” For Benson, the home was missing one critical piece: the Crippens’ vibrant personalities. “Elizabeth is such a fun person, and they’re such colorful people. I want you to walk into someone’s home and immediately feel their personality,” Benson says. “While the architecture is absolutely stunning, the home didn’t feel like them quite yet. We can bring out the brilliance of our clients in the interiors.” To soften the interiors, Benson wrapped most of the downstairs living spaces, including the stairway, in a Phillip Jeffries grasscloth, which gave the home immediate warmth. From there, the designer
took some of the homeowners’ existing pieces, such as the pair of Knoll sofas the Crippens had purchased from Design Within Reach, and balanced the clean, modern lines with “traditional finds,” Benson says. “A big part that was missing was the warmth and a little bit of the traditional mix.” Antiques and midcentury-modern pieces coupled with the modern architectural details and furnishings helped to balance the aesthetic while also injecting the colorful personality of the homeowners. Using the 180-degree view to the back of the home as inspiration for the color palette, Benson incorporated pops of color into every space. In the dining room, a bold orange glass Italian Murano chandelier hangs above a live edge wood table by Leake Furniture Makers in York, South Carolina, creating a stunning combination of organic-meets-contemporary. Swathed in Zoffany Pagoda River fabric, the Artistic Frame dining chairs provide the traditional touch that spaces like the dining room and adjacent kitchen were once missing.

The original home was a ranch-style 1970s French provincial home. Smith transformed the dated home into a two-story modern stunner that affords an expansive view of the large front and backyard from every room in the home. OPPOSITE: Seamless indoor-outdoor living was a priority for the Crippens, who love to entertain large groups of friends but also relax with their immediate family. Smith designed the martini deck for just that purpose. The Crippens own a company specializing in flooring solutions, so Benson designed a rug pattern on the floor utilizing different concrete stains and colors to create a bold look.
In addition to infusing the home with warmth and personality by using color and pattern, it was equally important to create an outdoor living area that allowed the Crippens to enjoy the space regularly and entertain large groups. The martini deck overlooks the pool and large expanse of the backyard. Michael Crippen runs a company that specializes in restorative and maintenance solutions for all types of surfaces found in commercial and public spaces, so Benson and her team put their creativity to the test using some of the Crippens’ products by installing a rug pattern using different concrete stains and colors. Benson then added supporting pieces to the couple’s existing sofas, such as the teak side table and the bespoke concrete fire table by Restoration Fabrication, as well as the Dedon orange woven lounge chairs and ottoman in Dedon
fabric. “When you look out the back of the house, the pool almost looks like the porch,” Crippen says. “There’s a natural rise in the landscape surrounded by big, tall pine trees with a barn up on the hill. have to produce a vineyard to indulge in your own wine collection year-round. A home should always be filled with cheer; simply finding time to relax can go a long way toward finding balance. There will be lots of getaways and memories made in this space. It is equally essential for us to rebalance from time to time, to adjust to what is going on in our lives. Working from home used to be a rare perk, an escape from the dayto-day. Now companies are mandating it. The occasional need to send an email from your laptop while sitting in the living room quickly shifted into establishing a dedicated workspace. Homeowners are searching for larger work surfaces, a comfy chair, and ample storage space. Zoom meetings have given us an intimate window into the private lives of our coworkers and a glimpse into the professional lives of our loved ones. This recently formed workspace offers the homeowners an area with a focus centering on function and aesthetics. The cabinet doors conceal the flexible storage area while displaying themselves on center stage. What is something that feels like therapy but is not therapy? A client recently expressed that her closet was becoming her escape room while her kids learn at home during a crisis.

Getting out of the city and on the river for a couple of days of fly-fishing is where you can find me when I have some downtime, although I can’t say that happens too often right now. One of my last fly-fishing trips was last summer, when my wife, Karen, and I spent a day on the South Holston River in east Tennessee with my buddy and expert fly-fisherman, Jeff Wilkins. The SoHo is a technical river, but Karen landed her first fish within three minutes of being in the water. Right away, the trip was 100 percent worth the drive. We aren’t all so lucky to be able to get out of town on a whim or when we need it. That is one reason why I love my job. At restaurants, we aim to provide the experience of a getaway daily. I’ve said it often, but food is restoration, and our restaurants exist solely to provide that.
From March through November (and on a handful of winter days, too), it’s tough to beat the joint patios of Noble Smoke & Bossy Beulah’s, with the smell of smoked hickory wood wafting over us and live music filling the air. The plates of barbecue and Charlotte’s best chicken sandwich (yes, I’m biased) don’t hurt. Whether it’s a brief weekday lunch break or a leisurely weekend afternoon, this space is a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This spring, we’re excited to bring even more ambiance and activity to those patios with the opening of the Beer Shack, which sits at the corner of the Noble Smoke patio and just up the hill from Bossy Beulah’s. We’re lining up the musical acts for the weekends, selecting local beer and seltzer for the taps, and crafting a special menu. We are more than ready to welcome a new season and provide a space for your next getaway—without the drive. u

IF YOU ARE A MORNING PERSON, WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN STARTING YOUR DAY IN A SUNNY LITTLE SPOT? I would love nothing more than to curl up with a cup of coffee—or two—in this light-filled room. When asked to design this space, I was instructed to use three of my favorite colors: black, white, and yellow. Being all about 88

pattern and texture, I began with a Schumacher black-andwhite deconstructed-stripe paper and layered from there. I included a bold patterned rug, abstract chairs, large art by Keith Keim, and unique side pieces, all anchored by a black-painted ceiling. It seems pretty simple, right? The key is in the pattern scale. When working with several patterns in a room filled with straight lines, remember to pay attention to their

different scales. Some patterns should be small, some large, some more organic. When all combined, it works. In this home, we used similar colors to achieve a clean, crisp feel. Mixed metals warm things up, and this room includes a killer brass side table I found locally and a small drink table in black metal with a black tile mosaic top. Large, original art is often more impactful than small pieces, so go big! Another trick is to paint the innermost interior grid black to achieve the look if you don’t have the thick black metal windows that are so popular right now. Altogether, this is an artful, strong, and calming space. u
