The best designs emerge when designers and clients forge relationships built upon mutual trust and shared understanding.

nterior designer Amy Vermillion has long been intrigued by how the right design can inspire better and easier living. “What I mean by that is the importance of finding out what each of my clients needs to function at their highest level while enjoying life more,” she explains. “Fifty years ago, we had none of the conveniences that we do now, and yet we are more stressed and over-scheduled then we have ever been.” Although always on top of the latest trends and newest technologies in home design, her biggest influence is her client’s lifestyle. She asks first, “What would make their lives happier? I want to know—does my client love to curl up with a book (Amy Vermillion Interiors is designing more libraries than ever before), do they need an entry point that is utilitarian (mudrooms!), or is it a cooking/entertaining kitchen that they have been dreaming about.” Vermillion believes in the “total fix—making homes not just beautifully appointed, but also functional and completely livable.” One of her recent designs in Foxcroft provides an excellent example of creating beautiful functional living at its best. Vermillion and her client have worked together for years on

several projects and have developed just the type of trust and understanding it takes to build the most successful of working relationships. Together they found an excellent starting point in a home with great architectural potential, located in one of Charlotte’s most desirable neighborhoods. However, the house had not been updated in several decades and “needed a lot of love.” The original design included a kitchen with an impractical floorplan, two master baths connected by an odd hallway, and a loft with a spiral staircase above the kitchen that had absolutely unusable square footage. Ultimately, they took most of the house down to the studs to allow for an incredible new functional design. They added a second story giving enough space for an additional bathroom, media room and even another bedroom. Along the way, there were a few wonderful surprises as well. Some of the unfortunate finish choices of the previous owner featured pink shag in the master bath and carpet over antique heart pine floors in the kitchen. “We all high fived each other when we found the heart pine in the kitchen!” describes Vermillion. Throughout the home today, a soothing, yet warm palette of colors flows through each room. Sunlight beams in from the home’s many skylights set against gorgeous vaulted wood ceilings. From the beginning of the project, Vermillion understood her client’s vision of his new home. april / May 2016 Urban Home Charlotte 19

Throughout the home today, a soothing, yet warm palette of colors flows through each room.

“My client has a great aesthetic—he loves the mix of antique and modern pieces and truly appreciates architectural detail to set the stage.” Understanding her client’s needs, Vermillion knew she wanted to create a home that he could entertain in, showcase his fabulous art collection, and truly enjoy day to day. As the transformation unfolded, she explains, “We laid out a thoughtful kitchen (he loves to cook), a functional master bath and turned a closet into a library office for his extensive book collection.” Another nonfunctional area was gutted and repurposed into a shared mudroom/laundry/ wine room. Her new favorite room of the home, the dreamy kitchen, is full of visual surprises and delights around every incredible corner. An engaging brick fireplace immediately creates a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, anchoring a room lit by inviting brass lanterns among other delightful lighting choices. The gorgeous heart pine floors contrast with greige cabinets and quartzite counters to add clean lines and sleek sophistication. “I wanted the cabinetry hardware to mimic the home’s original door hardware, so I designed it to scale and had it custom made in Chicago,” said Vermillion. “We used every inch of space, even incorporating cabinets with pull-up doors above the sink.” april / May 2016 Urban Home Charlotte 21

“Good design starts with the big picture,” believes Vermillion. 24 Urban Home Charlotte april / May 2016

The end result was not just an extremely functional kitchen, designed especially for someone who loves to cook, but also a cozy gathering spot where her client can read by the fire or have guests enjoy a glass of wine while he cooks. “Good design starts with the big picture,” believes Vermillion. “Whether I am designing a whole house or one room, it’s really important to think about how design choices affect the rest of the home. Rooms should flow into each other and share similar finishes, colors or appointments.” Vermillion also strongly advises, “Put some of yourself in the space! I always ask my clients if they have collections or anything they would like to showcase. It makes the space so much more interesting when it’s not all designer-related. One of my clients has a gorgeous assortment of antique objects all made with tortoise. We grouped them together in one room and they are now definitely conversation pieces.” She explains that one major downfall of the popularity of today’s reality design shows is that they make it appear as if you can produce the perfect amazing space overnight. According to Vermillion, “Patience is also key. You can certainly stage a complete room quickly, but it won’t be layered with all the special details and custom touches that make a space truly inviting and yours alone.”u

The Welsh House By Thomas Calamia Photography by Dustin Peck Home Plan Design by Jim Phelps

When a representative from the bucolic development of Cheval, located in Mint Hill, approached Mary Ludemann about building and decorating a home for their annual HomeArama event in 2015, she jumped at the chance.

A

s co-founder of New Old with her husband, Troy Ludemann, Mary has worked hard to meld their signature character-driven architecture with her impeccable taste in modern, approachable interior design. For this project, she was certain that her love of British style would be the perfect aesthetic for this show house, the Welsh House. Nestled inside the pretty pastoral neighborhood, the house mimics the classic country homes from the English countryside, but easily incorporates American architectural elements. The exterior features European-styled diagonal boards, while a path on the side of the home leads to the backyard pergola and garden. The result is a luxurious but comfortable aesthetic. “The goal was to create a space that was upscale but that also felt familiar and timeworn,” explains Mary Ludemann. “Truly, the home was inspired by a British country home with the casual sophistication reflective of the British countryside. It’s that classic design with a twist for which we’re known.” Stepping inside, the blend of rustic and modern designs is immediately relatable and unique. Oak hardwood floors and classic furnishings were all designed with style and durability in mind. “I kept a young and growing family as inspiration, but because this is an iconic, finely april / May 2016 Urban Home Charlotte 29

detailed style of design that deftly blends both city and countryside life, it has broad appeal – equally captivating to multiple generations,” says Ludemann. The kitchen, with its mix of sleek and modern appliances, including a classic cast iron AGA range, combines seamlessly with worn bar stools and marble hardtop island, all of which accent Ludemann’s overarching theme of timeless style meets function. The walk-in pantry gives a nod to a seemingly bygone era of simpler times and family togetherness. “We like to call it ‘livable luxury’ – the home is full of very high-end, upscale details, yet it retains the warmth of a casual countryside home beckoning you to kick off your shoes, bring in the dogs and kids and just relax and live,” says Ludemann. Ludemann designed two of the bedrooms for children; one in neutral tones with an outdoorsy boy in mind, the other – warm pink with twin beds for little girls. “In many ways, the home was reflective of our own young, active family – Troy and myself, our

The design was a hit and the home won the October 2015 ‘Houzz Tour’ award. All of the art featured in the home were original pieces done by local artists, which were later auctioned by Charlotte’s Anne Nielsen Fine Art Gallery to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) local chapter. “The home was turned into the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Charity Home, where we held an online auction for all the art and furnishings and were able to raise over $25,000 for this incredible group and worthy cause,” said Ludemann. This little Welsh House has made countless people happy from the inside out.u

Aida Saul New fabrics, and newfound furnishings mixed with old favorites have found their way into a client’s study that I’m designing. My inspiration and anchor for the room is the bookshelf; it feels new, unpredictable and it’s a handmade work of art. A Pierre Jeanneret chair and an Edward Wormley Tête à Tête – which can sometimes seem unattainable as vintage pieces, but are now available and manufactured in High Point – make a great addition to the study without breaking the bank. Vintage and antique pieces excite me; I love incorporating them into my designs. It makes a home feel more collected. Another key element of my design philosophy is to play with contrasting elements. In this

study, the rugged texture of the wallpaper and pottery urns is juxtaposed with a glamorous glass and brass chandelier and a furry silk velvet bench. I think it adds interest when opposing styles, finishes and materials create visual tension. My rooms are complete when all the pieces come together in a cohesive vision – and it not only makes my clients happy, but also excites my sensibility.

Outdoor Living Trends in 2016 Outdoor Great Rooms

Creating a super stylish living space in your backyard is now easier than ever. Weatherproof lighting, furniture, fabrics, flooring and accessories mean that you can move your living room out of the din of the den and into the bright sunshine. Deck features like integrated benches with upholstered cushions, privacy walls and accents like ornamental post caps and railings with decorative balusters similar to those found inside the home create a real sense of indoor comfort outside.

Rocking Railings

The unassuming railing on your back deck just got fancy. It may seem difficult to make a deck look distinct, but add a

contrasting handrail and it becomes the first thing you notice. For design-savvy homeowners looking for something distinctive, let the creative juices flow and go for a completely customized look that reflects your personal taste.

Warming Features

This trend will continue to be one of the fastest growing phenomena in outdoor living for 2016. From candles and tiki torches to fireplaces and lighting, products that lend physical and ambient warmth will be in high demand. Fire pits and fireplaces add a focal point to gather around, while the right lighting can highlight a special element or add a welcoming feel to the space.

60 Urban Home Charlotte april / May 2016

High Tech Decks

In keeping with bringing the inside outside, homeowners want to be able to listen to their favorite playlist, watch TV in high definition or control the lights and sound from their lounge chair. Home automation is on the rise.

Low Maintenance

You can’t blame someone for wanting to enjoy the outdoor space they’ve created more than maintaining it. Things like composite decking, stone pavers, allweather fabrics and natural landscaping all require much less care than some traditional materials, giving homeowners with the luxury of time.

Let’s examine some truths about the art economy. The fact that money changes hands as art moves between artists, dealers and collectors requires that it be examined, at least at some point, from a purely economic standpoint. In addition to enriching and adding beauty to our lives, art is also a commodity; it is bought, sold and traded in the marketplace much like all other articles of commerce. When considering the financial commitment of investing in a new work of art, consider these two points:

J erald M elberg

u

The Economics of Art: The Buying and Selling

Some art is worth more than other art, and it takes a knowledgeable dealer or collector to discern the difference. Certain works may be historically significant, unique in special ways, the products of pure genius, or masterworks by great artists. Many factors come together to determine the value of an artwork, and they may not always be apparent to the untrained eye. Art prices can fluctuate over time and will likely not remain constant. Changes in value can be the result of general outside forces such as taste, fashion or overall economic climate.

Dealers and collectors respond to these phenomena by evaluating dollars and cents as well as aesthetics when they buy. Beauty, visual appeal and critical acceptance are considered in varying degrees right alongside asking price and demand in the marketplace. Some individuals place major emphasis on the money aspects of art; others buy, sell and collect primarily because they love art and don’t care that much about money. No buying pattern is right or wrong, better or worse. u Robert Kushner: Layered Form March 11 – April 23, 2016 Thomas McNickle April 30 – June 17 Jerald Melberg is the President and Director of Jerald Melberg Gallery, which he founded in 1983. Exquisite Entryways and Wondrous Windows By Lee Rhodes

What do handcrafted custom doors, custom aluminum-clad windows and the crystal-clear waters of Lake of the Woods have in common? Well, aside from the fact that all three stand for the essence of beauty itself, Clark Hall Doors manufacturers the aforementioned doors and Marvin® Windows manufacturers the aforementioned windows. The Marvin headquarters is nestled along the shores of the ethereal Lake of the Woods near the Canadian border – the perfect place for design inspiration –

while the Clark Hall is closer to home here in Charlotte. The two companies formed a partnership last summer when The Window Studio at Clark Hall Doors became an independent dealer for Marvin Windows and Doors. “Our goal is to provide the customer with the best product possible for their house, with the least amount of maintenance,” explains Gary Kesling, owner of Clark Hall Doors. “With the Marvin product and the installation and service of Clark Hall that’s what customers will be getting.”

In Perfect Tandem Clark Hall Doors is used to providing customers with what they want, offering hundreds of custom designed entries, from contemporary and transitional to traditional, with products gracing the entryways of some of the region’s most exquisite homes. So when Clark Hall customers began inquiring about windows, the partnership seemed a natural fit. A privately held, family-owned company with over 100 years in the business, Marvin strives to make every window the best window. Indeed, each product is made to order, to the customer’s exact specifications. Unlike many manufacturers, “They don’t generate budget-grade windows,” says Kesling. “Marvin produces the highest-quality product for those who understand lasting value, and that is what Clark Hall has always represented.” In addition to the extruded aluminum-clad window – which outperforms typical aluminum clad, particularly in how well it endures the elements -Marvin offers a pultruded fiberglass product line that is stronger than steel. Additionally, the commercialgrade paint finish of Marvin windows is the same as that on the Freedom Tower in New York, an indication that it too can weather the elements, without showing age or wear. From an aesthetic point of view, the power of both Clark Hall Doors and Marvin Windows is transformative; the products of both companies add panache via signature design and craftsmanship. Historical renovations are a particular point of pride for the individuals at Marvin. They have crafted stained glass windows for historic places of worship, proving that they’re ready to tackle renovations in some of Charlotte’s most historic districts, such as Dilworth and Myers Park. Customer reaction to the partnership has been excellent thus far, says Kesling, as customers take advantage of the full service local area expertise of Clark Hall Doors, and end up with a premier professionally installed product that was crafted along the shores of a far-away lake. “Marvin has the same values and line of thinking that we at Clark Hall Doors have toward our customers,” he concludes.u

“Our goal is to provide the customer with the best product possible for their house, with the least amount of maintenance.”

Let There Be Light!

Great lighting is one of the most important elements of good design!

1. Task 2. Pendant 3. Interior LED 4. Ambient I absolutely love creating different effects with all the colors and types of lights available. We have come a long way since florescent under-cabinet lighting and the minimal ceiling fixtures that we used to see so often. Today’s lighting options are not only beautiful, but can complement a design, enhance the space and illuminate all of the important areas at different times throughout the day and evening. In my experience as a kitchen designer, I have found that there are three types of lighting: General lighting starts at the ceiling and should provide good lighting for the

walkways around your kitchen. It basically lights the room. Task lighting is usually installed under your wall cabinets and lights your counter space. It illuminates the area that you are performing cooking tasks. Task lighting also highlights your backsplash and countertops. Accent lighting is the most decorative and most exciting because it can be a focal point. For example, many of my clients choose a “pendant” fixture over their island. These fixtures come in all styles and provide a great decorative accent in your kitchen. They also provide needed lighting

over the island. Lighting inside glass cabinets also adds effect by showcasing your wine glasses or your brand new everyday dinner plates! All of these different types of lighting work together to provide “layers” of lighting for a room. I’m a big fan of dimmer switches, whenever possible. An important step in planning your lighting strategy is to think about where to place the switches. I’m a minimalist and I prefer as few switches as possible in the most convenient locations. When you shop for lighting fixtures, choose a specialist that has a showroom with all available options. I recommend seeing firsthand how each light source actually works. Some provide “cool” light and some provide “warm” light. Work with your kitchen designer and your lighting specialist on a lighting plan that makes your new kitchen stand out. After

all, your kitchen lighting is most likely the first light that you turn on in the morning and the last light that you turn off at night, so make it shine!u Catherine Whitney is the showroom manager and designer at South End Kitchens. Paradise Reclaimed By Brandy Woods Snow Photography by Jim Schmid

82 Urban Home Charlotte april / May 2016

“Our outdoor oasis has become the hub of our home, and now we use every bit of our backyard all year long.”

When Jason and Beth Monastra moved into their Eastover home, they anticipated spending time with their children in the expansive half-acre backyard. But when habitual runoff issues left their yard soft and wet year round, they began looking for solutions. “I saw a photograph of this amazing rectangular pool and knew it would be the perfect solution for our yard,” says Beth. She called Pool By Design in October 2014 and embarked on a journey that would redefine and reclaim the family’s outdoor space. “I wanted an oasis — a place to spend family time and entertain. I wanted our backyard to function as a seamless extension of the interior. Pool By Design’s plan captured all that and more.” At the project’s beginning, Beth had only one caveat — her custom-built wooden pergola adjacent to the living room must stay. The Pool By Design team expertly integrated the existing piece into the final design, building two massive planters out from the pergola to flank each side of the three-step pool entrance. A rain shower curtain and LED lighting were installed across the length of the pergola to further define the entry. Pool By Design also suggested a curvier-shaped pool with a darker gunmetal-hued lining to evoke a more organic aesthetic that meshed well with the lot’s particular shape. A hot tub spills over its edge into the pool, creating a waterfall feature that simultaneously heats the water. Pool By Design brought in McGee Brothers for all masonry and hardscape, Lantern and Scroll for custom lighting, and Intelligent Technologies for A/V work. The result was a comprehensive total yard redesign that turned the Monastra’s backyard into a true urban oasis. A 2,500-square-foot blue

stone patio surround offers various spots to sit and relax, with chaise lounges and a gas firepit to conversational seating, an HD television and wood burning fireplace. Custom lighting and sound system packages provide ambiance for any occasion. Artificial turf replaced remaining grassy areas to ease maintenance and provides the Monastra kids with the perfect place to play corn hole. “The solitude of our yard, the lovely sounds of the waterfall and rain curtain, and the mood lighting all create the true oasis I wanted. We’ve reclaimed our yard, and it has truly increased the total square footage of our home,” says Beth. “Our outdoor oasis has become the hub of our home, and now we use every bit of our backyard all year long.”u Want to rediscover a world of opportunity in your backyard? Robert Kushner Layered Form

On view through April 23, 2016 Robert Kushner is well known for his richly textured and opulent paintings of flowers, which have been his main concentration since the late 1980s. The artist says, Gold leaf made its way into my paintings, and my subject matter began to shift from figures to flowers and plant forms...Japanese influences slumbered and meshed with other sources for a few years. However, as a counterbalance, Matisse, Bonnard, Klimpt, O’Keefe and Demuth remained (and still remain) important sources for me.

Modern and White

Clients are building homes with a MidCentury vibe and taking the 70s ranch to a whole new level of sleek and cool. I just knocked down some walls in my 1921 bungalow and made it wide open. The “open concept” kitchen, living and dining area creates great flow and ample, uncluttered spaces. More people are going with all-white walls, and while color, color, color has been kind of my trademark, I am hugely drawn to that clean white “gallery” look as of late. It evokes a feeling of simplicity and calm, allowing special furniture pieces, rugs and art to really shine. A recent client was looking for just that aesthetic. It is a new, very modern build and I was hired to help fill the spaces with special pieces and pull it all together. I chose the perfect rug – a custom by Stark – and I designed around that. The rug was large and pattern-filled, but it was created in all neutral tones, making it the perfect grounding piece for a large white sectional and two pale grey and chrome chairs. With the foyer being part of this open plan, this unique built-in was designed to visually separate the entry from the main area. Accessorizing it was causing my client a little stress (as accessorizing tends to do for many). I chose large, color complimenting pieces, all with form and texture, to give it interest but very little clutter. I maximized every space, even taking advantage of the open area under the stairwell as a little sitting area to fill the void. From main living space you also look into the dining room; a very modern space, with just a light pattern on the floor to let the gorgeous view outside stand out. I wanted to highlight all the amazing architectural features like the large windows and high ceilings, a sleek fireplace and a modern stairwell, so I chose simple pieces, a clean color palette and interesting lighting. u

With all the renovating happening these days (I just did one myself), the trend of modernizing and streamlining is on the rise.

Tricks to keeping a modern style from looking too cold and stark • Layer your accessories in like-colors and on a large scale; but be sure to edit! • Tall indoor trees are nature’s art and can really bring the outdoors inside. • Add plenty of big art. • Most importantly, make sure you purchase the right size rug; always go bigger than you think to anchor all those floating pieces of furniture.

Decorating

It All Starts With The Rug By Page Leggett

90 Urban Home Charlotte april / May 2016

Customers come to Kathie Tollifson with all manner of materials asking for her help in finding a rug – paint chips, wood chips and fabric swatches among the most popular. It’s a great way to get a head start on finding the perfect rug, it’s helpful for Tollifson to have a starting point. But… there’s a better way. “Trying to coordinate a rug with all that activity can be difficult,” says the manager of Pineville Rug Gallery. “It’s much easier if you start with a statement rug and then build your colors around it. The right rug can actually pull together disparate elements in a room. And the earlier you bring the rug into the equation, the easier your decorating will be,” she adds. “Don’t let your rug – the very foundation of your room – be the last thing you decide on.” Classic advice says that you should pick your paint first, but after talking to Tollifson, it’s easy to second-guess what you’ve heard. “You can always find a paint color to match anything in the room you’re styling. You can’t always find the right rug, though – once you have all the other elements in place.” And the advice applies more today than ever – especially if you’re decorating an oversized great room – which is so common in today’s homes. Sometimes, it takes two rugs to cover the entire area, and if you’re buying a hand-loomed rug, no two are ever identical. Tollifson advises that, rather than trying to match and miss, it’s better to get coordinating rugs – one with, for example, a mostly emerald green field with beige border and then the reverse of that. Customers should consider the fact that no two handmade rugs are alike as a plus – not a drawback. And there are plenty of other benefits to handmade. All-natural fibers – wool, silk, cotton – have durability and “clean-ability” their synthetic counterparts lack; Tollifson calls the lanolin on wool “God-made Scotchgard.” “They can take a lot of abuse,” Tollifson says. Another bonus: They’re environmentally friendly. “I’m a greenie,” Tollifson says, as she notes that synthetic carpets can

Don’t let your rug – the very foundation of your room – be the last thing you decide on. put off toxic fumes and an overpowering odor for several weeks after they’re installed. Ideally, shopping for a one-of-a-kind rug involves a little advance work. First, know your room dimensions. “Some people come in and tell us they need a 9 x 12 rug,” Tollifson says. “We always ask: ‘are you sure? Tell us your room dimensions.’” You want to have a good idea of how much floor will be showing around the rug. Too much floor will make even a large rug look like a postage stamp. Second, “Know what you want to achieve in the room,” Tollifson advises. A Persian or Turkish rug will work with just about any décor – from primitive to refined traditional to Mid-Century modern. It will help you narrow down your selection if you know the overall look you’re aiming for, however. Fine rugs are an investment and most stores will allow customers to try a rug for a day or two before committing. This is important; as rugs can change the way they look throughout the day according to different lighting. Your floor covering gets more traffic and use than any other home furnishing, so it should be made to last. A handmade rug is intended to outlive us, so don’t let something so durable and beautiful be an afterthought.u Visit Pineville Rug Gallery at 312 Main St. in Pineville. To Thine Own Heart Be True

A custom build or remodel is the realization of a long-held dream, and clients are naturally filled with anticipation, excitement and even a bit of nervousness.

In preparation of their project they have pored over gorgeous online images and meticulously created their Houzz ideabooks and Pinterest boards. As inspiring as these sources are, I have noticed that they can also have an unintended, overwhelming effect that can all too often overshadow the positive feelings and lead to crippling anxiety and self-doubt. Where once these homeowners delighted in dreams of a Pinterest-worthy home they would proudly show off, they now only see potential missteps. They lose confidence in their vision and start second-guessing

their decisions. They are afraid to get it wrong. A recent client of mine was incredibly excited, but equally anxious to begin a longawaited renovation on her kitchen. As we scoured her Pinterest and Instagram pictures, I could definitely see a common thread emerging. But when I made suggestions based around design elements she clearly loved, she immediately refused. “I couldn’t do that,” she said. “It’s too popular, too trendy.” She had a completely valid point. But as I questioned her further, it was obvious to me that, trendy or not, these design elements were really where her heart was. In fact, she had always loved them – they just happened to have recently reached mass appeal. Two weeks later, I attended Southern Living’s Annual Design Summit. I was so excited (and admittedly star-struck) to rub elbows with so many of the South’s greatest talents in architecture and design as well as the editors of some of my favorite magazines! I listened intently to all the speakers, but was especially appreciative of Bobby McAlpine and Susan Ferrier’s words of wisdom. “To thine own heart be true,” they essentially said. Trendy or unheard-of, they urged standing out, being different, and following your heart no matter what (you fear) others may think. Their advice resonated with me and also validated my own beliefs. So often I see clients deciding against things they sincerely love because they are afraid that loving them just isn’t enough. They are seeking perfection and they don’t trust that their own vision will get them there. It really doesn’t matter whether what you love was popular years ago, is unprecedented to date, or is the hottest thing going. Be brave. Have faith in your vision. Have faith that your builder and/or designer can make it work. Let the things you love drive your design. In trusting yourself, you’ll end up with something that will be so much better than someone else’s charming pin; it will be perfect for you.u
