Family-Centric Design When Tyler and Amanda Covington bought their sprawling ranch home in High Point, they planned to make it their own with artwork, paint, new flooring and a few minor renovations. They hired interior designer Christi Barbour of Barbour Spangle Design to help.

C

By Nancy Atkinson David Clark Photography

Christi first met the couple in their current home. “In order to do my job well I needed to know a lot about the family – how they live together and what they love,” says Christi. “Homeowners are not always comfortable being completely open and honest, but the more they are, the better the results.” “At our first meeting, I told Christi I love to cook,” said Amanda. “I am always feeding someone. She also asked if she could look inside my closet.” But when Christi toured the couple’s new home she quickly discovered that is was not laid out to meet their needs. She knew the narrow galley kitchen and separate den would not work for the family-centric way they wanted to live. “I told them we could take the home they’d bought as it was now and put their stamp on it with their look and their things,” she said. “Or we could completely renovate the home and create what they’d asked for.” Having decided this would be their forever home, the couple agreed to renovate. “We only wanted to do this once,” says Amanda. “And we wanted to get it right.”

Design is a Labor of Love Christi’s vision included moving the kitchen to the much larger den area, and re-envisioning the entire first floor. She collaborated with John Vaughan of B.E. Vaughan and Sons on all the details. “The driving force was configuring a family-centric home that was easy to entertain in, a wonderful circular living space that is comfortable and reflects their colorful personalities,” says Christi. Christi’s design sketches worked in the colors from Amanda’s closet. “She was very conscious of making sure we loved everything; okay was not good enough. She made sure we loved every detail,” says Amanda. Messy living Renovation began, taking the home’s first floor down to bare bones, floor joints, ceiling beams and load bearing walls during one of the coldest times of the year. “The main floor was gutted,” says Amanda, who was at home all day with the couple’s two boys (ages nine months and three years). “We stayed in the basement during the day. Upstairs was our sleeping area. I would go from the top floor through the construction, sometimes on my hands and knees, to get a bottle from the refrigerator. But it was all worth it – every bit of it.”

Happily Ever After The home is the result of a successful collaboration between a couple who knows what they like and a designer who invests time in getting to know her clients. “It takes more time to design a home around its owners, personality and lifestyle – it is more of an investment,” says Christi. “But in the end it is much more rewarding for everyone. When people come into the home they say, ‘This is so Amanda,’ and that is the highest compliment I could receive.”v

The

wow

factor Amanda loves details, so Christi incorporated extra attention to detail throughout. 1. Brown on brown. On brown. The sophisticated rich brown study was once the dining room. “Tyler trusted us with his study. And he loves it,” says Amanda. Luxe details like the brass coffee table created a masculine meets glam look and offset the dark walls. The built-in cabinets were designed around the antique gun – willed to Tyler by an elderly man he once helped on an elk hunt and framed as a gift by Amanda. 2. The banquette. This family-centric cozy space was inspired by a dinner Christi had with her children, sitting close in a restaurant booth. “I wanted to give Tyler and Amanda opportunity to snuggle with their boys at dinner.” 3. The console. “Home is being surrounded by the things you love,” says Christi. “Amanda saw this console by Mr. Brown London and fell in love with it, so we placed it in the foyer. Now it brings her joy every day when she walks into her home.” 5. The island lamps. “These happened because the eight and a half foot ceilings had me so bummed,” says Amanda. “I couldn’t put a chandelier in the kitchen and wasn’t happy with anything flush mounted. Christi came in with this solution and it was genius. It makes the area cozy but also gives it grandeur.”

The photos from this home are from a filming an episode of the critically acclaimed PBS show, A Chef’s Life. To see all the photos of this home, the dinner party, plus behind the scenes photos of the filming, please visit www.urbanhomemagazine.com.

5. The arches. “All of the design pictures Amanda showed me included arched hallways and doors,” says Christi. “We couldn’t get all the arches she was asking for, so we framed the dining room with architectural arches and rounded the ceilings in the master bedroom hallway to give her room for the chandeliers she loves.”

Modern Lifestyle.

W By Nancy Atkinson Photography by Chris Edwards

When former Charlotte residents Erica and Craig Coblenz moved home to be closer to their family, the perfect house was waiting. Ideally situated in the Old Providence North area and sitting on three acres, the home was built in 2003 and still in mint condition.

While the couple loved the property, its location and schools, they weren’t as enamored with the homes’ heavy country French architectural style, reproduction furnishings and materials. They wanted a quieter palette with a simpler, more modern vibe to make the home livable for their active family with three young boys and a dog. To achieve their vision, their realtor led them to Circa Interiors and Antiques and designer Heather Smith. Well-traveled and known for her ability to bring a youthful, edgy spirit to traditional interiors, Heather’s aesthetic was a perfect match for the family’s needs. She pulled together a handpicked team of master craftsmen to build in layers of creative details that transformed the home. Her team included kitchen designer Emily Bourgeois, who completely redesigned the kitchen as well as cleaned up and redefined the breakfast area, family room, mudroom and coffee bar, which are all adjacent to the kitchen. David Purser refinished all the hardwood floors in the home and

collaborated on the kitchen island with builder Damon Rumsch. Mudwerk created the artisan plaster for the range area, ceiling, and walls in the coffee bar. Damon Rumsch of Coral Construction oversaw the six-month renovation. Heather also called on the talents of local artists to add a layer of modern interest to the home. Terry Reitzel’s original branch artwork creates a statement in one of the hallways. Custom sconces designed by lighting artist Evan Wood accent the padded headboard in the master bedroom. And Chris Kudra created custom steel windows, doors and the mesh firescreen drapery in the family living area. Other art, furnishings, accessories and lighting in the home are from Circa Interiors. Each element was carefully to be functional as well as beautiful. “If it’s not useful, it’s cluttering up the space,” says Heather. “With three small children and a dog running around, we don’t need that.” The breakfast room, located to the right of the kitchen is one of Heather’s favorite rooms in the house. With its

“Clean lines, neutral colors and fabrics that wear well over time are key. You don’t want to invest in trendy pieces you will grow tired of years down the road.” custom steel and glass doors that let in lots of light and a great view of the backyard, this is the spot that invites you to linger, long after breakfast. “I love the way Emily defined that space with the ceiling beams, painted darker to make the space feel cozy,” says Heather. “Some of my favorite antiques from Circa are in the house. I love the pair of bookshelves we used to hold everyday dishes and the pair of Venetian lanterns we hung in this space and over the kitchen island. The crusty gilt on those pieces is balanced by the warm walnut iron trestle table.” You might not expect these beautiful furnishing to be so functional. “The seating is super kid-friendly,” she says, explaining that the stools of faux leather are easily wiped clean, the chairs are on casters to move around effortlessly and, like the sofa, they are covered in washable slipcovers to manage any spills. 30 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

While the homes she designs are layered with details, Heather’s design philosophy is simple. “The main components – paint, carpet, drapes, lighting and large furnishings – should be timeless and durable,” she says. “Clean lines, neutral colors and fabrics that wear well over time are key. You don’t want to invest in trendy pieces you will grow tired of years down the road.” Like the home she transformed for the Coblenz family, she prefers functional simplicity and a clutter-free environment, using beautifully collected items and thoughtful layers to add personality. “I like to personalize the space with pillows, throw rugs, books, objects, artwork and lamps that are fun to move around as you accumulate new things,” she says. “It’s the same way I think about clothes – invest in quality where it matters and throw on some great accessories.”v

From hardwood to carpet, tile to stone, our floors are an integral part to everyday comfortable living. We dress them up with rugs or showcase them bare. We choose an array of hues in hardwoods and a range of designs in tile. There are so many options in flooring that it’s easy to get stuck in the safe zone. Check out some of the different ways to jazz up your floors and explore a new world underfoot. Cork One of the most exciting trends in eco-design is the use of cork flooring. The same material used to plug your favorite bottle of wine is being produced as elegant and modern flooring. With a wide variety of shades and textures— including a glamorous marble-looking finish—this soft, durable and hypoallergenic option is perfect for many spaces in your home. Cut and Loop Carpet Carpeting is created by sewing strands of yarn into a backing material, creating thousands of loops. When the loops are cut, you get high and low pile carpet, often known as plush carpet and even frieze. When the loops remain uncut, you get a loop carpet, similar to Berber. When some loops are cut and some are uncut, you get a “cut and loop” carpet that can be made into intricate or simple designs, adding interest and texture to your carpeted floors. Bamboo Bamboo floors by Teragren are made from Optimum 5.5 Moso bamboo that’s harvested between 5 1/2 and 6 years old. This maturity level produces flooring that is 25 percent harder than oak floors and 12 percent harder than maple floors. The light color is beautiful if left natural, but can be caramelized in a natural heating process for a deeper latte color. Bamboo flooring is made from grass and is a “green” option because it can be harvested from the same plant over and over again.

Reinkmeier Rietberg

Leather Tile Not only is leather tile warm, but it also welcomes nicks, scratches and spills, increasing character and patina with every one. This makes leather tile easy to maintain -- just dust, damp mop and wax as necessary. With proper maintenance it can last 50 to 100 years. According to architects and interior designers, leather is the ultimate splurge when it comes to modern flooring and options seem endless – from antiqued brown crocodile to metallic rattlesnake. Concrete Stain Concrete floors are not just for the garage. Dark stains give the concrete a glossy finish, dressing it up and adding texture to your space. Acid staining concrete creates intricate patterns and coloring to the floor, plus it doesn’t fade, dull, crack or peel. Glass Glass flooring can be used as tiles with different materials in between the base of the floor and the actual glass tiles. The toughened glass can be frosted or clear, like windows and even lit from below for a glowing floor effect.v

City Farm To Table The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reports that 800 million people worldwide participate in urban farming through raising animals or growing fruits and vegetables, producing what the Worldwatch Institute reports to be an astonishing 15 to 20 percent of the world’s food.

Urban agriculture has been gaining popularity on the heels of the farmto-table movement. Whether it’s a home agriculture experiment or a more organized, community-funded effort, more direct access to fresh vegetables, fruits and meat products through urban farming can improve food security and food safety. Plus, gardening can decrease levels of stress and increase overall mental health through connecting with nature. Clearly there are many benefits to growing and cultivating your own whole foods, too many to mention here, but here are just a few ideas to get you started on the path to better living. Who says you can’t get create your own farm-to-table inside the perimeter?

Planting Your Urban Garden If you’re going for the personal garden on your building rooftop, or in the smaller backyard of your city plot, a container garden is a great option. Container gardens must be deep enough to support root growth, ideally 8-12 inches. Remember to put some holes in the bottom for drainage, too. When choosing seeds, consider growing a bunch of herbs in a pot together. As for vegetables, almost everything will grow in a container. Lettuce, peas and greens can be placed outside mid-April; everything else should wait until mid-May. Remember that over-watering is the most common mistake; always let the soil dry out and then fill it up. A great container option, along with more information, can be found at Food Map Designs and http://stores.foodmapdesign.com.

Community Gardening If you’re building a community garden, one that everyone can access to help grow, tend and harvest for a profit, construct the garden to accommodate children, the elderly and people of all abilities. Raised beds, wider paths, and benches can all be used to create a more usable space. For information on city farms in Charlotte, visit www.smallcityfarm.com and for community gardens, www.charmeck.org. Coop Interest in raising chickens has grown quickly in the last few years, accompanied by a resurgent interest in heritage breeds, pastured poultry and on-farm processing. Baby chickens can be purchased through one of many chick hatcheries or through your local farm supply store in the spring. You’ll need a brooder to put your chicks in when they arrive; it can be 44 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

a commercially produced unit or a simple homemade item, but it must be big enough to hold the chicks to an age of 4-7 weeks. After 10 weeks, they should be between 3-5 lbs and ready for processing. If you’re keeping hens for eggs, they just need a comfy place to roost at night and lay during the day. For more information on how to raise and process your chickens, check out the American Pastured Poultry Association at www.apppa.org.v

Color Shift

While polished and high-gloss is still in demand, matte textures are making a comeback this year. Tile with a matte or semi-gloss finish lets you create a softer, more livable feel. Wall Tile Consider wall covering tiles. They let you put texture or patterns on the wall that rival the detail and softness of wall paper, without the mess. Wood-Look Flooring This year look for new trends in wood tile like: • Longer planks from 36” to 48” • Reclaimed, barn wood, or aged-looking wood • Mixing materials like natural stone and wood-looks • Parquet: creating geometric patterns with planks (no more linear) • Square-based patterns • Exotic looking hardwoods

Mosaics are more than little glass chips; this year, they go beyond the traditional medallions or glass 1x1s.

Love for Subway Tile grows stronger this year, a classic look that can be dressed up or down.

Stone Mosaics The specialty shape stone mosaics feature ovals, triangles, hexagons or marquise. Natural stone adds a hint of luxury or try limestone or marble. Offset the unique shapes with a complementary grout or match the grout to the tile for an understated effect.

Subway Tile Gets An Upgrade The classic 3 x 6 is always available in the perfect shades and finishes for your project. But consider adding a twist to your subway tile design. Go with a larger tile, vertical layout, or graphic design for a transitional retro look.

Glass Mosaics Multi-hued glass mosaics for the coming year have gotten away from the classic 1 x 1. Pencil tiles and metallic finishes expand the definition of mosaic in 2015.

Gray continues to be the hottest color but clay, taupe and other neutrals are making a comeback, with soft blacks making a move to rival gray’s popularity. Add To The Palate Classic neutrals will canoodle with pastel blues and greens as they join the palate. Peach, coral and purple will also become basic backdrops for the other elements in a room design.

When Steve Sechrest and Gary Mangione began The Comfortable Couch Company, now COCOCO Home, they understood the things that never go out of fashion, like high quality and superior craftsmanship, as well as the importance of giving customers new and unique styling choices. The rapid growth of this family-owned boutique furniture company was, in large part, due to the incredible flexibility they provide. Since all of their sofas, sectionals and chairs are made-to-order, they can offer options you can’t find with larger companies. Though they’re locally owned and operated, their furniture ships all over the country and, surprisingly, about 80 percent of their customers 50 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

never even sit on the furniture before they make their order. “They can do that because we offer what others do not,” explains Sechrest, “updated styles, made right here in North Carolina, offered with a greater ability to personalize than anywhere else.” “Big retailers choose the color palette for you,” he adds. “At COCOCO, we show you a huge selection of leathers and fabrics. In our Cornelius showroom, we have over 1,000 options in leather alone – customers can truly make a style their own, with the perfect material in exactly the right color.” Their solution-dyed fabrics from Sunbrella and Bella Dura have also

gained popularity. “These are beautiful, soft indoor fabrics produced with solution-dyed processes that make them extraordinarily cleanable and fade resistant,” said Sechrest. “They are a fantastic choice for an active household because you simply don’t have to worry about spills.” Every piece of furniture is built on a bench in their local production facility. Unlike most of today’s high volume retailers that rely on an assembly line somewhere in China, COCOCO knows exactly who is responsible for each important step. “Our team members are not only accountable for each piece of furniture, but it means something to them personally when they sign the completed order,” said Sechrest. COCOCO’S signature sofa style, and the item that is now drawing national attention, is their Chesterfield. Like all of their furniture, the Chesterfields are made in Newton, using top-of-the-line materials and craftsmanship. Beginning with a strong foundation, they use a kiln-dried hardwood frame. Their spring system is an elite pocketed coil system designed to spread the load across many more coils than a traditional coil spring system, providing an even, “float-y” feel. For their amazingly comfortable seat cushions, they use a high density ultracel foam core topped with a layer of super-soft oscillated foam, then wrap it in down. All eyes are on COCOCO Home this summer as they partner with FOX Network in its newest reality show, Home Free. Nine Atlanta-area couples are challenged to revive one run-down home every week. Not only must the couples work together to restore the home, they must live together 24/7 in the same dilapidated house. The final two couples will fight to the finish to win their ultimate dream home. COCOCO provided custom upholstery as a featured brand on the home makeover series which premiered July 22 and is hosted by professional contractor and TV host Mike Holmes. Stay tuned for all the excitement ahead! From their latest national television exposure and the grand opening of their gorgeous showroom in the heart of Atlanta’s upscale Buckhead Village, to wide scale recognition of their luxury brand, COCOCO Home is making waves in the industry this year.v The COCOCO Home Showroom is located at 19725 Oak Street in Cornelius. Hang-Out 54 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

When Phillip and Jennifer Goodrum purchased their 1930s Tudor-style home in Myers Park, they set out to truly make it their own – they renovated the existing house, added on square footage and created an outdoor living space that meshed seamlessly with the family’s vision. One of Jennifer’s main goals was to create an environment where their five children, aged 12 to 18 years, could have fun and bring their friends to hang out. Putting in a pool was the perfect option since it offered a place to gather, socialize or simply relax while also increasing the living space and value of their home. The project became a major component of their home’s total overhaul. Having heard several recommendations for Pool By Design, the Goodrums contacted owner Simon Spiers to discuss the project. “I wanted something modern but elegant with as much grass and natural areas surrounding it as possible,” says Jennifer. “The Pool By Design team was very accommodating in helping us achieve the desired aesthetic for our pool and surrounding areas. The quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail was phenomenal. They walked through the entire process with us, making suggestions and navigating hurdles to give us the backyard we really wanted.” The most challenging part of the process was designing the pool effectively within the Goodrum’s sloped yard; once Simon and his team suggested a tiered pool and spa with an upper and lower deck, the rest of the project easily fell into place. The project took just four months to complete and totally transformed the family’s outdoor living space. The clean lines of the rectangular pool require minimal accents for maximum impact. The square-shaped spa is situated on the upper elevation and spills over into the pool below. Two smaller waterfall features from stainless steel scuppers flank each side of the large spillover. Mirroring the pool’s design, the surround’s minimal elegance offers a thin slate edging along the waterline with grass and flower beds coming in close proximity, adding natural appeal. Bluestone coping along with bluestone on the back wall adds interest and for convenience, pool functions are all remote controlled. The Goodrum’s elected not to have a diving end in order to allow for more shallow areas where the kids could play basketball and volleyball. The custom-built pool and spa is the nucleus of the Goodrum’s outdoor living space which also features covered porches and patios and loungers along the upper deck as well as a built-in grill for many family dinners. “We eat almost all of our dinners in the outdoor space and enjoy spending time together by the fireplace,” Jennifer explains. “We definitely live all around our pool and spend a lot of time out here. The kids and their friends are always hanging out, which is why we built it, but even when they’re not, we enjoy the peacefulness of the pool and waterfalls. It’s definitely our favorite part of the house.”v Back yard designs by Blair Farris, www.blairfarrisdesigns.com. 704 737-1618. Kitchen & Bath

By Dana W. Todd

If you’re a homeowner in the midst of a home construction or renovation project, you’re probably mired in the seemingly limitless choices on the market for flooring, countertops, hardware and other materials. The choices can be overwhelming, which is why it’s refreshing that a local company like Stabella can clear the clutter and help homeowners pare down their choices on a key item like countertops for kitchens and bathrooms. Stabella fabricates quartz countertops, supplying homeowners a variety of options through manufacturers like Cosentino. The company has launched many new designs and colors of Silestone® quartz that easily match today’s kitchen trends and are pleasantly cost effective. No longer strictly available in solid colors, Silestone now offers choices with 58 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

the same organic movement of some granite slabs. Britney Spear of Stabella has been monitoring the design trends incorporating quartz in kitchen countertops and she asserts that there are two types of designs that are fresh and exciting. “French Country and the Urban/Modern feel are very popular this year,” she explains. “Whites and grays are our top quartz sellers so far, which integrate well with both looks.” Resembling marble, Silestone choices run the gamut of grays – from the splash patterns of Helix to light colored Ariel to dark gray Istmo or Dinux. For those who wish to add movement to the countertops for extra contrast and excitement, they can look to Silestone’s Zirix and Zynite choices.

“One option for a French Country kitchen is adding a pop of color in an accent island that is different from the rest of the countertop,” Spear says. “For example, butter cream cabinetry looks striking with a bright teal center island of Arctic quartz.” Modern-styled kitchens look best with solid color quartz countertops, advises Spear, enabling a monochromatic scheme when cabinetry is painted in a related shade of the countertop color. “Clean lines and non-decorative edges add to a modern feel. We’ve even added infinity edges by wrapping islands in quartz all the way around the cabinet to the floor,” she says. Urban quartz choices include solid colors, of which Silestone provides more than 60 options. “Within the last year, Silestone has offered even better selections,” Spear says.

What is unchanged about Silestone quartz? Its material properties, which homeowners desire not only for aesthetics but longevity, make quartz a top choice for countertops. Its non-porous surface is stainresistant, even to stubborn stains like coffee and wine. It’s acid-resistant to substances like lemon juice that often etches marble and granite, and its hard surface makes it scratch- and impact-resistant. “Kitchens are customized more and more as the years go on,” Spear says. “Imagination is the only limitation. Silestone quartz is helping address the desire for uniqueness.”v Interested in a maintenance-free quartz countertop for your kitchen or bathroom project? Kitchen Central Station

trent haston A kitchen island is a natural place for people to congregate... Nice, comfortable island seating will keep everyone sticking around.

To say my family has outgrown our current home is an understatement. There are six of us crammed into 1,800-square feet, which, surprisingly, has managed to work quite well for us. Ultimately though, it’s just time to add some space. We have been planning an addition for years, and while we are excited about it, our one reservation is that we don’t want the added square footage to cause us to lose the closeness we currently share. Our solution to this is a wellplanned centralized kitchen that serves as a magnet for togetherness. I like to call it Kitchen Central Station, and here are the key features: Incorporated dining table – We want to skip a formal dining room and instead want our dining table to be right in the kitchen to serve as a natural center meeting point for our family. We want this place to feel comfortable and casual, and a place to linger after a meal. Island seating – A kitchen island is a natural place for people to congregate. While kids graze

64 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

and food is being prepared, it’s a great place for conversation to flow. Nice, comfortable island seating will keep everyone sticking around. Good lighting – I know this seems to be my bandwagon lately, but people are like moths; we are drawn to good light, and avoid harsh or bad light. Dimmable recessed cans are my favorite to meet a variety of needs – make them bright for food preparation or dim them for dinner ambiance. I also love good natural light in kitchens. Skylights are becoming more popular in kitchens, and it’s something we are considering in ours. High ceilings – Along the same lines as good lighting, high ceilings give a room unexpected comfort. People don’t feel so cramped, and higher ceilings give an airy feel to a room. Adding wood beams can create warmth. Higher ceilings can also allow room for high windows (to add more natural light) or extra storage space in taller upper cabinets. Staircase landing – We will be adding a second floor to accommodate the kids’ rooms, and we

want the staircase to take off from the kitchen. That way, kids can’t avoid it and mom always knows who is coming and going. Mom’s office – My wife spends about 80% of her time at home in the kitchen. She’s not just dealing with meals and groceries, but she’s often sitting at our current island on her laptop doing her “mom business”. Our new kitchen will have an incorporated office to include computer space, charging stations and filing. Open to Living Room – We really want our living room and kitchen to feel like one big room. This keeps everyone together even while doing different tasks. For example, mom could be making dinner in the kitchen, dad could be sorting mail at the island, one kid could be watching TV in the living room, another could be doing homework at the table. Everyone might be doing different things, but with an open floor plan, everyone is basically together.v

The Mid-Century Modern Kitchen

Catherine Whitney

After designing many traditional homes in the mid 1980s, I’ve seen my share of trends come in and out of style. Think Tuscan villa, French chateaux, English manor, Georgian and Greek revival. However, over the last few years, I have noticed, and maybe you have too, that Mid-Century modern is having a renaissance in Charlotte and around the country. In fact, the modernist trend in design can be seen throughout our traditional neighborhoods and in many of the new condominiums and apartment projects.

70 Urban Home Charlotte August / September 2015

What makes Mid-Century modern so interesting and exciting these days? I believe it’s the refreshing return to simple design, open spaces and the use of a variety of materials both natural and manmade. These features are accented by both plain and detailed fabric design, a spectrum of paint colors, natural light and stylish lighting throughout. I find it both exciting and invigorating! Some of the characteristics of a Mid-Century modern home include clean and simple lines, with flat rooflines or slightly pitched rooftops being the

signature. Furniture is a generally simple – long deep sofa or leather chairs framed by bent wood or metal. Splashes of color and fabric, like a zebra skin on your hearth, can liven up the space and make it feel cozy. Fireplaces can be simple or exciting. Long, open hearths are very popular and can be accented using materials such as natural quarry stone, large ceramic tiles or slabs of quartzite. Some even use a neat stack of Fire Balls™. These create a beautiful geometric pattern and can be stacked in many arrangements. There are different shapes and sizes and they are an exciting variation from the standard. The flame can be blue and the elements can have color. It’s like a piece of art. Since many Mid Century modern homes have 8-foot ceilings, one way to “lift” the space is to use a very simple door style that has no frame or detail and take it as close to the ceiling as possible. Raising the backsplash by a few inches also creates a more open feeling. Combining exciting paint colors on the base cabinets with a natural wood veneer on the upper cabinets is also popular. Using a “waterfall” edge on the end of a cabinet run or on the ends of an island creates understated elegance. Simple under-cabinet lighting that accents the backsplash and counters is key and cabinet hardware can add to the overall look of the kitchen by being minimal and classic. Do you remember the Brady Bunch home located at 11222 Dilling Street in North Hollywood? That was Mid-Century modern before its time.v

Three Shades of Gray

Beth KEIM This large, large room with its shades of gray is a space calm enough to spend hours relaxing in and punchy enough to be exciting!

Gray is definitely my favorite neutral; I use it a lot – Benjamin Moore 1550 to be exact. There are cool grays and warm grays, both of which are the perfect backdrop for any pop of color. When Carla Fuller called me to help with her new home in Myers Park, she knew she wanted to create a look for her great room that used plenty of my favorite neutral color. This space is large, open and full of light. When I first walked in, I admit I was a bit envious of all the elbowroom. We brought in two long, 100-inch custom sofas instead of a sectional, and two swivel chairs and an ottoman large enough to complete the entire sitting area. Not only was “large” the name of the game in this space, the colors were very important to Carla, too. Each fabric, while different in texture and feel, are all very similar

in the warm gray palette. To add even more cohesiveness, we chose to do a gray wash finish on the sofa legs and incorporate a sofa storage console with just a slightly deeper version of the same gray wash. The side tables got a warm gray shagreen finish as well. With our neutral base in place, it was time to mix in a little color. Carla’s an orange girl and we pulled this warm and juicy color into the space with pillows, art, accessories and two ottomans. These single additions brought it all to life and added the cozy warmth this large space needed. Accessories are key to any space and while many clients want to wait on all those details, I try to discourage the delay. These pieces finish and personalize a room and are just as important at the perfect sofa. Bookcase styling can be tricky, but my one big

Prop artwork, stack books, lean things, float things — all words I keep in my head when placing bookcase accessories. Framed pictures are great; just keep them larger and similar in materials.
