Merriment and Magic

HOME Charlotte

D E S I G N

ntertaining season is upon us. And nothing motivates me to spruce up my home more than a festive holiday party and seasonal decorating. Bring on the lights, crank up the music, set the table, and drape some garland. The most wonderful time of the year is here! It’s also the busiest time of the year, and our editorial team has been joyfully working on a gift just for you: a new editors’ piece we are calling Fabulous & Feature Worthy. In this Best of Guide, we have offered a new outlet for capturing high-style interior design in Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Unwrap pages of inspiring design in a room-by-room feature that showcases the exquisite talent in our community (page 43). We also welcome you home for the holidays with an inside peek of a residence on one of the most festive tours in our city, the upcoming 40th Annual Fourth Ward Holiday Home tour. Gift giving is one of the most delightful parts of the holiday season, but it seems like it gets harder and harder every year to come up with an original gift. To help, we asked local interior designers, some of the area’s most creative minds, what they enjoy giving, and wow, did they deliver! Be sure to check out their fun, out-of-the-box ideas that are perfect for everyone on your list (page 26). As we gather (and linger) around the table this season, we fill our dining rooms with love and beauty. So we curated three tablescape styles which feature brand new fine china patterns that will elevate your entertaining and tabletop decor. From whimsical monograms to simple geometric patterns to nature-inspired forms, we’ve got you covered (page 22). The true elegance of the holidays is captured through celebrating new and old traditions, connecting with friends and family, and giving back. Growing up, my family always beautifully captured the magic of the season, and admittedly, I continue to take the tradition overboard in my home. Whether you prefer to keep the season subtle or bring on the glitter and glamour, Home Design & Decor is here to help inspire your own magic. Thank you for connecting with us, and cheers to celebrating the spirit of the season together!

deep cranberry, the different shades of this rich, saturated hue works well with a variety of ambiences. As for textiles, lush cut velvets set a sensual tone while light-weight ikats impart a playful sophistication. This sumptuous color pairs nicely with complementary greens such as emerald and peridot. But to really indulge the senses, incorporate a rich dark chocolate into the space. It will leave your mouth watering.u

Holly Hollingsworth Phillips The English Room

“Travel is certainly the best source of inspiration for me. The different design styles and cultural diversity always fill me with ideas. Morocco and San Miguel, Mexico have been recent favorites. India is next on my list. But, most importantly, you must live with your eyes open and take in all the details. It can be found in the souks of Marrakech, a coffee table book, or an elementary school art fair. You must train your eye to see the beauty and appreciate it. Pattern and color palettes are around us constantly. We just need to look.”

Tips of the trade • Always mount your curtains all the way up to the crown molding or the ceiling. This will make your ceilings look higher. • Don’t forget the fifth wall. Use your ceiling as a way to add more color or pattern with wallpaper or a colorful paint. • An area rug that is too small can ruin a room. Twelve inches is the optimal distance for an edge border in most spaces. • When hanging a light fixture or chandelier over a dining table, place it thirty inches to thirty-six inches above the table to allow for a centerpiece.

Colorful History Meets Colorful Design in the Fourth Ward. By Brandy Woods Snow Photography by Dustin Peck

T

he eclectic Fourth Ward house with its colorful history was not what Richard and Marlene Moody had in mind when they started their house hunt, but it’s a classic example of how sometimes the best laid plans can go astray and often with the most fulfilling outcome. Knowing they were soon to become empty nesters, Richard and Marlene Moody began exploring options for a new home in 2013. “We felt the need for a change. I wanted a new construction, open floor plan, and a three-car garage,” she says. “That’s not at all what I got, but I couldn’t be happier with my new home and neighborhood.” Originally built in 1933 as a quadraplex, the Fourth Ward home they found came with a colorful history—in more ways than one. “Over the years, it became a speakeasy and then a painter’s gallery that was purple with 311 (the house number) in neon pink on the front door.” During the Fourth Ward rejuvenation in the 1970s, the home was renovated into a single-family space, and in 2007, the home underwent another remodel where the front facade and cedar portico was added. When the Moodys purchased the home in 2015, they immediately began renovating the house to their own tastes, eliminating the lingering reminders of the disco era, including the ‘70s-style Jacuzzi tub, track lighting, and popcorn ceilings. A jewelry designer by trade and founder of her own line, Hoopla, Marlene Moody harnesses that creative spirit in reimagining her home’s design. “Designing jewelry is all about combining colors and shapes with a few great accent pieces,” she says. “That really describes my new home decorating, as well.” So much so, her husband made her promise that the entire house would not be redone in her favorite turquoise hues. “We kept all of the paint colors very clean and

light in the modern greige tones. And true to my word, the furnishings and accents are every shade of blue, from robin’s egg to navy—not just turquoise!” Marlene Moody says she finds blues to be relaxing and calming, using her collection of pottery, glass, and paintings as a basis for the home’s cohesive color scheme. Although, she’s

been eager to punch up the blue palette with splashes of red and orange to create an overall design that is warm, casual, and inviting. Though the home is now converted to a single-family space, the original layout is still evident in some areas, including where the downstairs space is split with the living and conversation pit Best of Guide 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 67

A hallway divides the upstairs with three bedrooms and a bath on one side and the master suite on the other. A sitting porch off the master suite overlooks West 9th Street, and Marlene uses a small room off the front bedroom for her in-home jewelry workshop. “I love the quirkiness of the layout, she adds. During their two years in the home, the Moodys have remodeled the master bath to include a walk-in shower, soaker tub, and vanity by Restoration Hardware. A custom walk-in

closet was also added to the suite to maximize storage capacity. Crown molding was added downstairs, and new cabinetry and a gas Viking range were implemented in the kitchen design. Modern fixtures, including a custom lighting installation at the front entrance by Lantern & Scroll, replaced all previous lighting. The remodels stretch beyond the square footage to the exterior, too. A custom color formulated by Frank Harrelson of Eastway Paint freshens up the home’s curb appeal, and a new cedar gate echoes the design of the front portico. yard. As well, Greg Hill/Tartan Builders Group installed removable screens to the porch, allowing the Moodys to fully enjoy North Carolina’s beautiful weather. These remodels are only the beginning, as Marlene says the planning and design is a continuing consideration. “For me, decorating a home is an ongoing organic process. There really isn’t a final finished product. We are actually starting a new project this week.” That project—the installation of a built-in cabinet designed in collaboration with Greg Hill/ Tartan Builders to replace the dining area’s current display shelves—will be available for viewing at the Fourth Ward’s Holiday Home Tour that will feature a walkthrough of various houses, condos, and townhomes decorated for the holidays. The 2017 event marks the 40th annual home tour in the Fourth Ward and the home’s first appearance since 2009. While Marlene finds the prospect of having more than 2,500 people visit her home a little overwhelming, she is honored to be a part of the tour, as well as the everevolving history of the residence. “We think it’s important to give back to this special neighborhood and be a part of the fabric that binds it together. Living in an older home in a historic neighborhood has made us realize that we are just the current caretakers of the house,” she says. “And, like the previous owners, we aim to preserve it and leave it better than we found it.”u

n the heart of Mecklenburg County, nestled in the immaculately manicured grounds of a five-acre estate, a hand-set cobblestone driveway transports guests to a world away—a world reminiscent of the rolling French countryside. This ambiance doesn’t wait at the door but travels throughout the five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom maison, intertwining itself in the home’s intricate craftsmanship. “The impeccable property has unrivaled details, including master millwork, hand-painted frescos, authentic masonry, and hardwood floors,” Lisa McCrossan says, the listing agent for Ivester Jackson. “The moment you step inside, the European influence embraces you – from the kitchen’s AGA stove to imported stained glass doors in the carriage house.” Built in 1969, then extensively renovated in 2005, this Providence Road estate offers quiet, country living in an exclusive neighborhood. The expansive foyer, filled with natural light, offers guests a warm greeting space punctuated by a stone staircase that sweeps up to the second level. An oversized great room capped with wooden beams, a grand formal living room, and a gourmet kitchen infuse a sense of European rustic elegance. The elevated master retreat offers ample luxury and privacy, boasting separate dressing rooms, closet spaces, showers and water closets, and a private sun terrace that overlooks the pool and grounds. Commanding views from every corner of the home brings the outside in, allowing homeowners and guests alike to revel in the serenity and sanctuary of the estate. Rodney Hines doubles the size of his Furniture Connector showroom while maintaining its charm. By Page Leggett Photography by Michelle Jones

W

hen the building that housed The Furniture Connector (TFC) for eight years was sold, TFC owner Rodney Hines thought about downsizing but only for a minute. When he found showroom space in South End that was twice the size of his old space, he decided to go big or go home. “My mind ran with the possibilities,” he says. The 14,000-square-foot space doesn’t feel overwhelming. It’s easy to get a lay of the land from the moment you walk in the door. Furniture is mostly grouped into vignettes – a bedroom here, a living room over there – so you see how all the pieces could work together. There are some parts of the store grouped by category, too. “We wanted the new space to have a big rug presence,” Hines says. “We’re offering everything from hand-knotted to vintage to new, machine-made rugs. And – Ohmygawd – they’re gorgeous! Some of them are seventy years and older and have been bleached and then re-colored. Some of them are one-of-a-kind and at great price points.” Hines gets even more effusive than usual when he starts talking about rugs. “A lot of these rugs have what my husband, Mark, has started calling ‘POC.’ That’s Pop of Color. Every room needs a POC.” He’s increased his lighting presence, too. “Every week, we’re getting in more light fixtures. We like to do unusual and fun. I’d light up the world if I could.” Hines trails off mid-sentence when he sees an interior designer, one of his regulars, walk in. From the dreamy, cream sectional we’re sitting on (he calls it a “marshmallow cloud”), he invites Jessica Powell of Powell & Sullivan Design over to chat. She and her business partner, Jen Sullivan, consider Hines one of their key collaborators. “We’re their satellite home,” Hines says. Powell agrees and says they appreciate “the wide variety of fabrics in the store and the opportunity to be really creative.” And the joy of options. There’s an entire wall (on wheels) of fabric swatches in what Hines calls his “brother and sister” chair collection. He offers eight different chair styles and – wait for it – 800 fabrics in which to cover them. Every chair is $699, and that includes the custom upholstery with the fabric you pick. Hines and his staff love offering a good deal. He calls it “superstar pricing.” Hines, never one to follow trends, believes people should buy what they love. Though he may not follow the trends himself, Hines is still well-versed on “what’s in.” “Bohemian is strong right now,” he proclaims and points out

a few boho-chic statement pieces – a fabulous, tufted chartreuse headboard, for one. But for the most part, Hines curates four main looks for his store – industrial, modern, new traditional, and what he calls “retreat.” (That’s furniture he envisions in a beach, lake, or mountain house.) The design staff is as outgoing as Hines and always happy to consult – on a single piece, a room, or a whole house. “It’s not just about selling furniture,” he says. “It’s about helping you create a comfortable home.” In fact, comfortable is a good way to describe the shopping experience at The Furniture Connector. It’s a welcoming, no-pressure environment, and the sheer size of the place makes it likely you’re going to find something (or some things) you want to take home. Another plus, Hines has relocated to another happening street. He loved being across from Triple C Brewing on Griffith Street, but he points out that he’s now within walking distance of five watering holes: Olde Mecklenburg and Sugar Creek breweries, Good Road Ciderworks, The Broken Spoke, and Queen Park Social. Hines jokes: “I’m always gonna find my way to a brewery.”u

Opening Up

T

ear down this wall!” President Reagan exclaimed during his 1987 speech in West Berlin. He, of course, was referring to the Berlin Wall and his message was directed to Mikhail Gorbachev. Today, our design team is frequently repeating Reagan’s words, developing projects and plans that feature the removal of walls. Prior to the ’90s, it was still fashionable in residential design to split up public areas with walls, creating the illusion of a larger home with a higher room count. But home design and the way we live have evolved over the last 25 years. Kitchens have become a “living room” and the public areas that surround it are an extension of this hub of activity. I’m a big fan of open floor plans and all the benefits they offer, but I realize they’re not for everyone. Whenever I walk into a kitchen that has four walls, I’m immediately checking out opportunities

86 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | Best of Guide 2017

for removal of at least one or two of them. I’ve generated a list of real-world examples to give you an idea of the benefits of opening up your home: That dining room you rarely use Having a closed-off formal dining space is great for dinner parties and holiday gatherings, but older homes with smaller kitchens can benefit from more elbow room. The kids or guests you can’t see when you’re in the kitchen Whether you’re entertaining or just getting through your daily meal routines with your kids, a kitchen with four walls has only enough room for one or two people. Removing a wall between the kitchen and living room keeps everyone within view. The large island you’ve dreamed about Removing a kitchen wall often creates an opportunity to feature a large, multipurpose island that becomes a place for everyone to hang out. Removing that dark feeling Depending on how your house is situated

and how the trees around you filter the sun, rooms that feel dark can lighten up once a wall or two is removed, allowing more natural light to flood in. Often, homeowners run into the question of whether or not the wall coming down is a load-bearing wall. If that is the case, a structural engineer needs to be consulted to design a plan to redistribute the load using engineered lumber or steel beams. Many times it means adding supplemental support to the foundation or the walls below as well. It sounds painful and costly, but in most cases the resulting improvements to a home’s design are well worth the effort. Sometimes it may be difficult to imagine how a space will look and feel with an open floor plan. What about furniture placement? What about acoustics? What about traffic patterns?

These are all valid questions that an experienced designer can help answer. All you need to do is be “open to the possibilities!u Brad Little is the president of Case Design/Remodeling of Charlotte and has been leading a team of award winning designers and craftsmen since 2005. here is something about an older house that just by nature makes it homier – the wider moldings, plaster walls, and wide plank flooring with all its imperfections. While building your dream house is exciting, there is something to be said for caring for and updating an older home. This particular Myers Park residence has all the character I love in an older home. My client wanted a sunroom facelift, and the first thing I noticed when I met with her was the amazing old casement windows. I fell in love and could not wait to start.

While building your dream house is exciting, there is something to be said for caring for and updating an older home.

They wanted a casual, comfortable room for watching TV and lounging. I immediately planned a sectional in the corner for exactly that. I shopped the house and found a leather chair downstairs that needed a new home in this space. The room evolved from there with neutral shades and lots of texture. Mixing leather and shag with a brick wall and metal windows as a backdrop, I then pulled in two different light fixtures for either end of the sofa (in place of an overhead light and side lamps). I could picture myself curled up in the corner of that sofa on a chilly Sunday afternoon under that light with a good book and looking out of those beautiful large casement windows. We painted them black, and my client beat me to the punch and used a liquid gold leaf on the hinges! I love these windows, and I imagine myself in a New York City loft watching the street below or in a large open studio working on a new masterpiece. This room turned out just as I envisioned, evoking all sorts of daydreaming and comfort. Isn’t that what we all want when we come home?u Beth keim is the owner of Lucy and Company, a full-service interior design firm with a NEW location at 2108 South Boulevard, Suite 213. Fireside

I

t’s fall once again. The weather is crisp, the leaves are turning vibrant colors, and the holidays are just around the corner. I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things to do this time of year is to grab a good book, pour myself a glass of red wine, and snuggle up in a comfy chair in front of a crackling fire. My love of fireplaces goes back to my childhood. I grew up in the snowbelt of western New York. We had a roaring fire in our fireplace nearly every night from October through April. To this day, the crackling of fireplace logs and the cozy warmth of a good fire bring me comfort and many fond memories. As a designer and builder, I love to put at least one fireplace in each of our homes. If I’m lucky, I get to put in more than one! Fireplaces can be so beautiful and so personal— each hearth and mantle design is unique to the homeowner. I love working with different materials and playing with different heights and proportions to achieve different looks. That said, there’s much more to a great fireplace than a beautiful design. The first and most important aspect of choosing a fireplace is functionality. You need to consider both your lifestyle and the type of fireplace you’d like to have.

90 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | Best of Guide 2017

Everybody loves a crackling wood fire and most of my clients tell me they want a real, full masonry wood-burning fireplace right off the bat. However, once we discuss the logistics of a genuine wood fireplace, many change their minds and go with gas. Wood fireplaces are messy, time consuming, and a bit of a challenge to light. They require hard work, a place to store a lot of wood, and they tend to be more expensive to build. If you can’t give up your dream of having an authentic fireplace, a convertible unit might be the right option for you. We really like Isokern’s Magnum and Standard All Fuel Series. You can burn wood if you choose to, or you can use a fitted gas log set. The lack of a glass front really adds to the authentic look and feel. You could also opt for a gas fireplace with a glass front. Heat&Glo offers a great variety of products that heat effectively and efficiently. They are a breeze to operate and look so realistic that it’s very difficult to tell that they’re not wood-burning. If you just can’t decide which type of fireplace to go with, you can do what I did and put one of each in your home. You can have a genuine, crackling wood fire on your back porch on nights when you have more leisure time. Meanwhile, your gas unit inside can summon that dancing flame with just the flip of a switch on even the busiest of nights.u
