From the editor

I

t’s unquestionable that the political landscape has gripped our lives in ways we never saw coming. And in effect, it’s caused rifts between some of those nearest and dearest to our hearts. Despite the harried world we live in, we find ourselves back at the time of year where we need to let go of what divides us and embrace what unites us – friendship and family. Coming together over the holidays is a beautiful thing where we create memories that have staying power. For me, this holiday season is even more special, as it will be my daughter’s first Christmas. This issue, our Great Gatherings issue, is a celebration of coming together for food and fellowship – nourishment for the body, mind, and soul. In the case of the Twine & Twig sisters, founders and owners of the jewelry and lifestyle brand, it’s a “framily” affair with an open-door, zero-formalities policy where friends, family, and children gather on Sundays, watch football, break bread, and engage with one another. You might even get blazed over by a roller-blading child or two gliding through the home (page 54). For anyone who’s ever put together a dinner party or hosted an oyster roast, they can tell you that it’s a full-on production. One way or the other, food must be made, drinks must be served, and plating must be provided. There’s a lot that’s involved. And it’s the thoughtfulness and care that go into each decision that make it such a special occasion. Interior designer Barrie Benson welcomes us into one of her client’s homes and shares with us how she creates a perfect dinner party tablescape and also provides a few tips and inspired looks for the holiday season (page 20). After all, it is the season of giving, so we’ve put together a designinspired gift guide to give you some ideas for the design enthusiast in your life. You may even find a little something for yourself, too (page 24). Whether it’s offering presents, devoting time, preparing food, or designing your tablescape, it’s a gift of giving to others. I wish you and yours a joyous holiday season and a truly merry Christmas filled with sweet moments that will transform into treasured memories you’ll look back on for years to come. Cheers!

On The Cover: Combined with architect Ruard Veltman, Twine & Twig co-founder Elizabeth White creates a soulful design where cozy gathering spaces abound in her Myers Park home (page 54).

Dine by Design From the jaw-dropping wallcovering and drapery to the elegant tableware and greenery, interior designer Barrie Benson creates an outrageous dining room and tablescape certain to inspire your next great gathering. Written by Anne Marie Ashley | Produced by Ashley Hotham Cox | Photography by Dustin Peck

W

hether gathered in your formal dining room to feast on a gourmet meal amidst gorgeous place settings or hovered over takeout boxes shared in your eat-in kitchen, the sentiment is the same: breaking bread with friends and family nurtures the connections that we all crave as humans. Put that way, it may seem dramatic, but truly – laughter, conversation, and sharing create an intimacy that can be easily misplaced in today’s harried world. What better way to tend to your soul than to gather those closest and host a classic dinner party? Whether formal or casual, it all leads to a great gathering. From sentimental china pieces mixed with luxurious linens to a well-planned menu and thoughtful atmosphere, it’s true that all you really need to create connection is each other. But, a pretty set-up doesn’t hurt. And a beautifully executed tablescape can convey a message of caring and engagement with your guests. Renowned Charlotte-based designer Barrie Benson of Barrie Benson interiors created the perfect dinner party tablescape in her clients’ newly designed dining room and has a few tips and inspired looks to share with you for the holiday season. Designed by architect Sam Greeson of Meyer-GreesonPaullin-Benson, this jaw-dropping dining room is a traditional stunner highlighted by beautiful windows, perfect scale, and spot-on panel dimensions. “This de Gournay wallpaper would be pretty in any space, but it is especially striking in a room with such gorgeous architecture like this one,” Benson says. “While this is a more traditional formal dining room, we added a few modern nods like the ebonized credenza by T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings and a geometric rug from Merida.” Using a natural palette of green and white, she mixed moss-colored candles in vintage Swedish candelabras with boxwood topiaries in varying sizes and small arrangements of white roses with forest berries. “We wanted the design to complement the room, not distract from its interest,” 20 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

December 2018 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 21

22 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

Benson explains. Richard Ginori Fiesole china is placed at each seat with Georg Jensen flatware, William Yeoward crystal glasses, and vintage embroidered linen napkins passed down from Benson’s mother. “The Fiesole china dressed the table in a way that felt timeless, in keeping with the room,” Benson says, adding that the brass birds added an unexpected element, as well. Benson makes creating a tablescape look easy, but the skill is in thoughtful preparation. Creating conversation pieces and bringing personal elements to the meal can spark dialogue and even inspire connections on deeper levels. Serving a nostalgic dish, for example, is a great way to personalize a meal. “When hosting a formal dinner party, I love to bring back an old-fashioned favorite from my childhood like chicken curry with sides of peanuts and coconut shavings,” Benson says. “It’s unexpected and intriguing, and it usually triggers warm conversation.” Benson also suggests using your table design to engage guests, noting that you could use a modern fabric for table linens mixed with your more traditional china or include a family heirloom or a unique flower arrangement as the centerpiece. “Also, while large, dramatic floral arrangements work in some cases, it is important to keep in mind the line of sight when seated,” Benson says. In the end, however, being prepared can remove stress and distraction, leaving a smooth and enjoyable evening for you and your guests. “Have all of the china ready, linens ironed, silver polished, and candles lit so that you can focus on your guests,” she says. “I have found it is so important to have everything set ahead of time, so as soon as your guests arrive, you are ready to welcome them. And if you are still in the shower, it looks pretty when they arrive, even if [you] do not!”u

Avant-Garde Aubergine

1

A dark and delicious serving of eggplant Produced by Ashley Hotham Cox Written by Christina Spratt Spencer The mysterious allure of this composed and dignified hue lies in the sultry way it muddles the luxurious red and coy blue with rich licorice notes to create something reserved yet completely complex. With the ability to serve as both a savvy neutral and a bedazzling jewel tone, aubergine, like a fine wine, matures and ages a palette, granting a sense of depth and importance. Always beautiful conveyed in rich textures like plush velvet, mohair, or buttery leather, this regal shade of purple transcends tastes from neoclassical to lavishly layered bohemian and everything in between. Pair with onyx, chartreuse, cobalt, scarlet, moss, or duck egg to bring out its certain je ne sais quoi.

HANNAH Ozburn It’s all about livable beauty for interior designer Hannah Ozburn, who recently moved to Charlotte. Employing an unexpected mix of texture, pattern, and color, her interiors are never too serious, yet always sophisticated. “A home should be a reflection of those that inhabit it, which is where I tend to draw my inspiration and creativity. I strive to create beautifully livable interiors. I have two small children and many of my clients are young families, so functionality is at the forefront of every design-related decision,” Ozburn says. “I’m inspired by everyday life – by vibrant art or a beautiful textile, my friends and family, nature, travel, and all my surroundings. My children’s artwork displayed on the walls, my grandparents’ china I use to entertain, the scuff marks on our hardwood floors — these things, to me, create a happy home,” she explains. “I want my clients to feel their home is an extension of 6 their best and truest self — very livable without compromising style.” 1. The original den was transformed into a formal living room because it was a space that Krissa and Glenn Gaston had to walk through to get to and from their bedroom. “For that reason, I wanted it to be ‘my pretty room,’ where we could keep our piano and more,” Krissa Gaston says.

rissa Gaston and her husband, Glenn, thought they’d found their forever home. After renovating their four-bedroom home in Eastover for their family of four, they were certain that this was where they’d raise their children and eventually retire. However, when the couple had their third child, they knew that they needed more space. “We never wanted to move,” Gaston says, who reluctantly started looking at homes in the same neighborhood. But one home in particular always caught the Gastons’ attention. A stunning whitebrick Colonial sitting atop a hill caught their eyes every time they drove by or went for a walk. “I never really thought anything about it, though,” Gaston says of the house, which was, at the time, not for sale. It was a phone call from a close friend, however, saying she’d found the perfect “Krissa and Glenn home” that was about to hit the market that

changed everything. “I got the address and drove over that day, and when I pulled up to the house, I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “It was as if it was meant to be.” A quick tour inside the circa-1990s home and Gaston was smitten. “I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the home the minute I walked in,” she explains, noting the layout, which put the master bedroom on the first floor and the additional bedrooms on the second. High on the priority list: updating the ‘90s-style design details such as outdated brass hardware and all-white ceiling fans in lieu of light fixtures. “The bones of the house were perfect; it just needed updating,” Gaston says, who Opposite: The couple loves to scour antique markets and vintage stores for unique pieces for their home. worked with Todd Carter of Sonoma Builders to design the new plans for the home. It also needed a touch more space, which resulted in an addition off the back of the house and moved the existing den—which became the formal living room—to the new portion of the home. The expansion also gave the Gastons a sixth bedroom, which they transformed into an at-home gym. While Gaston has a keen eye for design, she knew she couldn’t tackle the project on her own. So the Gastons enlisted designer Patrick Lewis to help bring their vision to fruition. “Most clients don’t really know what they want; they just know what they like or don’t like,” Lewis says. “Krissa was refreshing in that she knew exactly what she wanted. While most people were skewing towards a

In lieu of marble, which the Gastons had in their previous home, the couple opted for quartzite counters complemented by a walnut top island to add warmth to the newly renovated kitchen.

Durable and kid-friendly materials were important to the Gastons, who have three children and three dogs. In light of that, Lewis used Stark’s Amilios indoor/outdoor carpet. But then he softened the space with a side table from Bliss Studio, lamp by Visual Comfort, and traditional furniture such as the sofa upholstered in a Lee Industries fabric.

soft modern look, the Gastons really loved a more traditional, Southern aesthetic.” “We’ve always been drawn to older homes,” Gaston says. “We’ve always lived in homes built in the 1920s and just love the craftsmanship put into them.” To replicate that level of detail, heavy crown molding and detailed fireplace mantles were added while all of the eight-foot doors were replaced with heavier, thicker nine-foot doors to help heighten each room. Brand new casement was added to each window to make each one more prominent. With its dark cabinetry and exposed brick, the kitchen was completely gutted, and in its place brighter, lighter finishes such as a quartzite counter coupled with a walnut-top island were added. Lewis incorporated a color palette of creams and whites, which further brightens each of the rooms and take advantage of the home’s surplus of natural sunlight throughout. The Gastons’ love for traditional architecture and detailing inspired their love of antiques and vintage items, which Lewis wove throughout the interior design. “I love adding a little something—like a tiny silver bowl or another accent—that might seem insignificant alone but really helps create a cohesive

look,” Gaston says. The couple’s travels have led them to various antique markets and collectibles stores where the Gastons are constantly scouring for the next item to layer into the design Gaston and Lewis have created together. One such find are the circa-1890 Louis XVI-style antique doors to the bar, which Glenn Gaston found at Architectural Accents in Atlanta. “We wanted something old that would really stand out,” she says of the find. “The doors are works of art themselves.” Though Lewis was the designer on the project, he is quick to add that this project was a partnership between him and Gaston. “She has impeccable style and a great eye for design,” he says. “She knew what she wanted, and we worked so well together.” Adds Gaston: “What I love is that Patrick really took what we wanted in the home and helped us pull it all together. He was such a pleasure to work with.” For the Gastons, finding this home and eventually making it the place they’d raise their family was a dream come to fruition. “It was really important to me that my kids had a childhood home,” Gaston says. “So that when they come back from college, they can come back to the place where they grew up.”u December 2018 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 51

A “Framily“ Affair The Twine & Twig sisters keep family and friends near and dear to their hearts with an open door and an invitation to gather.

The softness of textiles and the silence of colors create a warm mix in the family room as Elizabeth and Jacquelyn join the children for afternoon gaming.

very parent can attest that they dread the day when their children choose their friends over their family. The day when the table becomes set for just two and the swarming madness of suppertime ceases. For Elizabeth White and Jacquelyn Buckner, the talented sisters behind the evolved Twine & Twig jewelry and lifestyle line, the answer is Sundays spent with a mass of friends and family. In its most simplistic form, the girls gather at Jacquelyn’s most cherished watering hole, the popular Plaza Midwood brewery Resident Culture. With its effortlessly cool and family-friendly vibe, the brewery opens its doors to the most serious of craft-beer enthusiasts, as well as the most harried of parents. It is this open-air, down-home atmosphere that allows Jacquelyn to have, as she puts it, her “Sunday Fun Day.

There are epic games of Rummikub, endless battles at the Go-Fish table, and volumes of good grub thanks to the brewery’s steady rotation of food trucks. Beyond the gaming and grazing, a common thread resonates – to spend the final hours of your weekend with a breeze at a brewery with loved ones in toe undoubtedly results in a fantastic collection of family-time memories. These memories are an absolute reflection of the respect and adoration that the sisters hold for their mother, Meb Wentz. As a single mother, Meb wanted the girls to always feel like the 58 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

house was full – full of energy, full of love, and most of all, full of people. Her gatherings were never about the food. Rather, they were simply about the conversation and community of friends her girls learned to know as “framily.” It was an awesome mixture of chaos and cool, where the kids could run like crazy, and the adults could cocktail and fascinate over the week ahead. Elizabeth’s home is no different. On any given Sunday, you could be trailblazed by a kid roller-skating down the front hallway or may find yourself in debate over the making of a new business model. “I see our table as not only a place to

gather with friends but a place to learn how to run a business!” Elizabeth says. “It is a place where everyone at the dinner adds value, a place where it becomes somehow fun to learn again,” Jacquelyn says. And what an education they have received. From friends like Urban Ministry enthusiast, Ethan Grossman, the sisters learned that their philanthropic efforts needed to be tangible. It is this notion that inspired Elizabeth and Jacquelyn to create charitydriven collections like the Water and Low Country collections, where proceeds benefit a designated not-for-profit dear to their

hearts. There is always a beat to the purpose of their collaborations, a way to give back and remain grounded in their community. They are compelled to share their good tidings with not only those less fortunate but also with the grand supporters they have encountered since the brand’s inception in 2013. There is an unspoken need to thank friends like Max Nicholson (better known as the man behind favorite deli shop, Sandwich Max). “There were endless nights of cutting suede or branding leather, and sure enough, you would find someone like Max out in the garage, beer in hand, just there ready to help,” Elizabeth explains. Both sisters joke, “It is not uncommon to find cheap labor among our dinner guests!” Humor aside, Elizabeth and Jacquelyn agree that honoring their friends’ stewardship with simple things like an invitation to Sunday supper is just a nod to the thanks they deserve. The open-door policy at Elizabeth’s is an understatement. While there are always many friends to thank, there are just as

many new acquaintances to be made. And this grand collection of people on Sundays is a direct result of “the more, the merrier” policy instituted by Elizabeth. “I’d rather open my home to thirty than cook for the mere five that live under my roof,” she says. Luckily, Elizabeth had the opportunity to collaborate with architect Ruard Veltman in creating an informal dining area that allowed everyone to just “pile in.” The result? A very casual, yet dynamic space that features a custom-built table (also designed by Ruard Veltman) that can easily seat twenty people and enables Elizabeth to showcase her true talent: tablescaping. She conceptualizes a table like one would fashion an outfit. She considers the season, the color, the palette, the undertones, and the need to layer. Her table is dramatic and simultaneously subtle. It is a perfect balance of new and old with blush-hued linens from West Elm and stormy, faux bois plates from B.D. Jefferies placed effortlessly with vintage sterling, and floral-filled mason jars.

Opposite: Perfecting all the elements, the creative genius of Nectar, Inc. showcased an assortment of jar-filled café au laits, hellebores, butterfly ranunculus, and chocolate Queen Anne’s lace. The textural arrangements complemented Elizabeth’s vision to layer the table with natural elements, soft tones, and savory dishes. Above: Mapping out place cards and seat assignments are forbidden. “You may find kids standing and babies crying, but most of all, you will find laughter and love at our table,” Elizabeth says. December 2018 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 61

An invitation to dine, the casually chic spirit of the day continues with family-style serving by The Open Road Kitchen. Kid-friendly, yet sophisticated, the menu was a perfect fall arrangement that included butternut squash bisque, mapleglazed root vegetables, tomato-gruyere macaroni and cheese, and a show-stopping herb-roasted chicken.

62 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

The kids’ spirits and freedom reign in Elizabeth’s back lounge area.

“Her gatherings were never about the food. Rather, they were simply about the conversation and community of friends her girls learned to know as “framily.” The table itself is crowned by a chandelier made of reclaimed wood, dusted in a cloud-like plume of pampas grass and Lunaria. The creation, a design by boutique florist Nectar, Inc., was intended to be light and airy. “We wanted the overall look to be subtle but exotic, comfortable but high end,” says Karisa Pennell, owner and lead designer. Natural and textural in design, the look was softly elegant and produced a subtle nod to the season. Food is an integral part of the table and should harmonize

with the table’s decorative elements. However, Elizabeth elects to never formally plate. “The meal needs to be playful, yet sophisticated,” she says. With a vegan husband, a meat-loving sister, and the unpredictable appetites of young children, it is understandable that a typical menu writes like a ten-course meal. But this never overwhelms as long as you maintain Elizabeth’s mantra to “over prepare, over serve, and always treat friends like family. We are all ‘framily,’ after all.”v December 2018 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 63

eena Knight and her husband, a retired NBA player, had built their dream home in Charlotte. They went all out – 10,000 square feet of house on more than three acres of land filled with all the bells and whistles, choosing luxury wherever possible. When it was all said and done, they sat back and enjoyed – until they didn’t anymore. “I began to feel a longing for simplicity,” Knight says. “Everything in that house was too precious; I found myself more uptight about it than delighted by it.” Realizing they had more home than they could live in, Knight and her family decided to put the home on the market and begin looking for something a little more practical. “I thought, for sure, a home like ours would take up to a year to sell,” she recalls. “But it was much quicker than that, and we were suddenly faced with having to choose a new home fast.” When they walked into a home in Providence Plantation, Knight was anything but impressed. Built in the 1980s, it needed some serious updating and renovation. But pressed for time and encouraged by her

husband to work her magic, she agreed they could make a home here. “The backyard really made it worth the purchase; it was so gorgeous. And with my husband believing I could make it beautiful, I was ultimately happy with our decision,” Knight says. Over the next six to eight months, Knight worked closely with Corbin Homes to renovate and redesign the outdated home. “This house is such a reaction to our old home,” Knight says. “Where everything in the old home was very lavish, I wanted this home to be livable and modern.” Admitting she took several cues from Chip

and Joanna Gaines and their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper, Knight created a modern farmhouse feel with transitional appeal. In place of imported stones like in her previous home, she opted for simple and sophisticated choices like subway tile. Instead of crystal and glass, warm wood and brass. “My style, in general, has always been high/low. I think mixing affordable pieces with splurges, in fashion and interior design, is the best approach,” Knight says. “I tell my clients the same: not everything needs to be high end. I splurged on my Newport Brass faucet in my kitchen but was really pleased with December 2018 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 71

the inexpensive subway tile I chose for a backsplash.” In the end, as you see, it all marries beautifully. “Ultimately, design is an art, not a science,” Knight says. “If it makes you feel warm or makes you smile, it’s doing its job. You can’t use rules and standards to get a design right; you just have to love it.” When working with her clients (she’s started her own business post-home renovation), Knight gives them three pieces of advice: If you love it, build around it. Every room needs a “Beyoncé” element. In Knight’s case, she almost always chooses lighting to create it. And once you find something you like, stop looking, don’t over think it. It’s clear in her own home, Knight has practiced what she preached and created a space that’s modern, warm, and above all, simple. Her kitchen is her favorite room in the home, where she used wood, brass, and rattan as an anchor to the bright white finishes. When she can, Knight uses local artisans to bring authenticity to the home. For example, a handmade coffee table in the living room 72 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

from Rosewood Co. and art from local artist Leslie Poteet Busker. “I like to leave room for curating,” Knight says. “You’re not always going to find the perfect piece immediately, so don’t feel the need to decorate every inch of your home. Leave some spaces blank so you can add things that mean something to you. Design with neutrals so that you can edit with color.” As someone who’s moved a lot with her traveling husband, Knight has learned these key things and discovered something about herself that’s probably true for most homeowners. “Whenever we get into a new home, I tend to design and complete the kids’ rooms first, so that they will feel at ease quickly,” she says. “But, I wish I was that kind to myself. I only just decided on a look for our master bedroom. It’s easy to get caught up in making our gathering spaces feel photo ready, but we need to take better care of our personal spaces, too.” A simple request from a woman who has discovered the joys of a less adorned life.u

rowing up, Christmas was my favorite. And it wasn’t because of the presents. It was because I liked food. A lot. Our family gathered together every Christmas afternoon around – what seemed to a teenage football player – an unlimited supply of food. I always went back for seconds. And thirds. There was green bean casserole or asparagus casserole. Ham and turkey. The turkey of my youth wasn’t very good – the birds were too big back then – but it was great in a sandwich with stuffing and gravy. My Aunt Esther would make a brown sugar pound cake. She and her husband, Uriah, worked at a bakery in Virginia. She’d also make lemon tarts and little pecan pies. Uncle Uriah was the donut guy. He could crack four eggs at a time; he’d put two in each hand, smack them together, crack them open, and toss them. Over and over. It was rhythmic and mesmerizing. The holidays are special for their ability to create memories like these, specific ones that seem to center around food but are really rooted in fellowship. People that don’t usually cook much during the year start cooking and baking. Everybody pulls out those special family recipes, the ones where if you get the faintest whiff of them cooking, it will instantly take you back to childhood. Maybe even the mere mention of them can do that. Peanut butter cookies. See? Here’s another one: my dad always did what he called a “whitewash gravy” for the turkey. The name for this giblet gravy comes from his childhood, which involved a lot of painting. His dad was a preacher; all of the kids in his family painted or hung wallpaper to help the family make ends meet. I still make this gravy now, though I’ve adapted it over the years. Being in the restaurant business makes getting together around the holidays a little harder. I’ve been working weekends and holidays pretty much since college, and we usually hold our staff holiday party in January, when the pace slows.

76 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

We do what we can, though, to reserve time for fellowship with friends and family. That usually means keeping it simple. We’ll smoke a prime rib roast and open a really good bottle of wine. My daughter will make a broccoli casserole, and we’ll have mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, turnips, and some kind of greens. Nothing complicated. To do otherwise would be to miss the point. Sometimes, we’ll rush through the holidays and get so worn out that we’re happy when it’s over instead of being happy when it’s happening. Whatever your entertaining calendar looks like this year,

try to slow down enough to make room for those memories to be created. Christmas only comes but once a year, after all. u Chef Jim Noble is the executive chef and owner of Noble Food & Pursuits. itchen and breakfast areas often go hand-in-hand when it comes to redesign or renovation. Since most breakfast areas are part of the kitchen, it’s important to design a space that complements the entire room for a cohesive look. However, here I tried to step outside the box a little. I worked closely with contractor Ben Collins of The Salins Group and homeowner Whitney Balzer to create an entirely new kitchen and breakfast room that opens beautifully to the dining space and family room. Collins is such a joy to work with – full of creative ideas, and Balzer’s great sense of style made my job easy! The kitchen, in short, is all new, all white, all new cabinets, and has a much larger island. We decided to mix up the hardware to keep it interesting and eschewed typical shiplap, opting for more texture. I wanted something other than your typical dining space, so I designed a large banquette and two round tables for a seating area. The result reminds me of all the outdoor bistros in Paris, which I love – intimate and cozy. I chose two forty-inch round pedestal tables for ample legroom and cow hide stools that can be moved around depending on the number of people. When considering lighting, I chose two fixtures that “wandered” a bit. An irregular light fixture gives a little leeway with placement, which lends perfectly to a space that’s conversational

“Since most breakfast areas are part of the kitchen, it’s important to design a space that complements the entire room for a cohesive look.” and lounge-like, allowing friends and family to linger while dinner is being prepped. The new pass-through to the dinning room brings in even more natural light, dispersed in all spaces. The kitchen “office” has been moved to an area off to the side and is a new home for pups Happy and Zola, all dressed up with new complimentary wallpaper. The result is a casual, light, and bright space to accommodate every member of the family.u Beth Keim is the owner of Lucy and Company, a full-service interior design firm located at 2108 South Boulevard, Suite 213. Home remodeling

nytime someone asks me when is the best time to take a remodeling project, my answer is almost always “right now.” There is no ideal “remodeling season” like there is for homeowners that live in areas where the ground stays frozen for part of the year or deal with months of rain or other extreme weather. In this current economic environment, there really is no busy or slow season. As remodelers, the only thing that really affects us is our client’s availability. School, holidays, vacations, family changes, and work schedules are all parts of life that drive the timing for when clients decide to focus on remodeling their home. With that in mind, I’ve put together a summary of common reasons why you should either move forward now with remodeling your home or wait until later:

B r a d L ittl e

Now • Inflation – In the world of residential remodeling, inflation is real. Wages are increasing, codes are getting stricter, labor is getting scarce, and demand is high. Rising interest rates may cool things some, but it is safe to say that your remodeling project will cost more a year from now.

u

Now or Later

• Momentum – Do your research, gather your ideas, and talk to professionals. Once you get going, use that momentum for seeing it through to the end. • You’re not getting any younger – Continuing to live in a space that you’re not happy with or comfortable in can take its toll on you and your family. Make those improvements now so that you can begin enjoying them sooner.

84 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018

Later • Family transitions – Taking on a remodeling project is disruptive to the entire household. If the kids will be moving off to college in a couple of years, or a family member is staying with you temporarily, wait until they’re out of the house.

• Career opportunities – Investing in larger remodeling projects generally take time to pay for themselves in terms of increased home value and equity, so if a possible relocation means you may have to put your home on the market, hold off on any major improvements until you know for certain you aren’t planning to relocate anytime soon.u

• Funds – Yes, inflation is real, but if it takes another year or so to build up the funds to get the project you really want, do that rather than having to trim off scope or features that are important to you.

Soaking in Style

uring this time of year when the weather is cold and rainy, one of my favorite things is an evening soak in a steaming hot bath with lavender bath salts, a glass of wine, and Instagram. (Yes, I’ve been known to drop a phone in the tub a time or two!) After spending winter afternoons on cold job sites building our clients’ gorgeous baths, I can’t help but look forward to warming up in my own. You’ve probably read how much I love designing and building kitchens, but I have to admit I have a passion for designing pretty baths, too. I love seeing the look on a client’s face when they see their spa bathroom brought to life. The master bath is an intensely personal space. Not only does it have to be highly efficient for busy mornings of two people getting ready at the same time, it’s also the homeowners’ getaway, their haven when they need a second to press pause on hectic days and relax in some bubbles. From the classic claw-foot tub to a sleek modern soaking tub, I like to use the bathtub as a focal point in the room. Whether tucked away into an unused nook or centered between the vanities, the tub isn’t just a feature of the room. It is a purposefully placed asset used to enhance the design of the space. A timeless tub is a mark of elegance in a master bathroom as is an oversized shower. Not all our clients are as into taking baths as I am. An oversized shower is just as important or more to many of our clients. Many of New Old’s recent builds have featured highly detailed tiling on the walls and floors of the master shower. From hexagons to herringbone, traditional running-bond, and even the use of specialty custom patterns our tile installers carefully hand place, master showers are spaces where you can get creative with detail. We’ve also been including quite a few built-in benches and extra shower sprays for those who like to sit for a bit in a steamy shower. Adding character to a new house is what makes it feel like a home. And adding the details that make your heart sing in a utilitarian space makes for a happy morning (and evening, too, in my case). A well-planned bath is key. And when it’s also pretty, you have your very own personal spa that keeps families loving their homes for years to come. u Using her trademark blend of tradition and innovation, New Old co-founder Mary Ludemann has been designing and building dream homes for more than a decade. To find out how she can bring your ideal home from a dream to a reality, visit www.newold.com, call 704-975-3723, or email building@newold.com.

COMPANY’S COMING!

hether you’re celebrating the holidays or another special occasion, great food and drink are a great start to a fabulous get-together. But we think there’s another step to perfection – design your rooms in a way that make guests feel at home and encourage them to mix and mingle. It will help them— and you—relax and enjoy one another’s company. Here are five of our favorite pieces for entertaining friends and family in comfort that also deliver great style every day. ALL TOGETHER NOW The extension table is a classic go-to for big dinner parties; it’s a great investment if you have a spacious dining area. To get the most out of this piece, choose a timeless, versatile look that complements your lifestyle and adapts to your changing tastes. The Sayer extension table delivers an inviting rustic yet modern look that can go casual or dressy depending on how you style it. It has a generously sized planked top for family dinners and sprawling homework sessions, and it can easily seat up to ten with the addition of two twenty-inch leaves. WARM THE BENCH Rethink your seating plan: Swap dining chairs for an upholstered bench on one side of your table to create a more intimate feel. The Aldrich bench can seat up to three people and has a simple, elegant silhouette that can complement many dining styles. For fashion-forward flair, dress it in a stain-resistant fabric in a color or print that differs from the rest of your dining seats.

SET THE BAR HIGH What’s the next best thing to having your own bartender? A bar cabinet, of course! It’s a stylish and smart choice for storing barware and serving up food and drink in an instant. The Evansview bar cabinet has a chic, Hollywood cocktailhour vibe, and its modest size fits beautifully in many spaces. Gorgeous brass-accented doors open to reveal four drawers, two shelves, and four stemware racks. HIT A TRIPLE PLAY Nesting tables are some of our favorite functional pieces for gatherings. These duos and trios come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. Nested together, they make cool coffee tables or end tables. Pulled apart, they can expand your tabletop space, or you can use each table individually. The It All Started With A Mouse table from the Ethan Allen|Disney collection delivers a unique, midcentury-modern-inspired design. Tuck the two smaller circular tables beneath the larger

one, or let them peek out to form a cool three-tiered silhouette. (If you look closely, you may see Mickey Mouse!) CARVE OUT CONVERSATION A great seating arrangement makes it easy to relax over cocktails and conversation—and sectionals make it easy to have a great seating arrangement. They’re inviting, they can seat many people comfortably in less space than a traditional sofa-and-chairs setup, and they can be configured for your room any way you like. The Marcus sectional has a sleek, casual profile that works wonderfully with many styles. Add the Marcus ottoman, and you’ll have an extra seat if you need it, a table for a tray of food, and a place to kick up your feet when you’re done wearing your host or hostess hat.u Whether you’re hosting a small gathering or throwing a big bash, serve up a great time with the right mix of style and function. If you need help designing a space for entertaining, stop by our local Design Center at 11516 Carolina Place Parkway in Pineville, 704-341-7512. Each artist presents a unique vision captured through their lens, ultimately demonstrating new ways of seeing the world around us caught on paper. An opening reception will be held on January 10 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Charles Basham: Ends of the Day Jerald Melberg Gallery Through December 29 www.jeraldmelberg.com The Jerald Melberg Gallery will be hosting a solo exhibition on Charles Basham. Ends of the Day will feature new pastels inspired by the natural light over rustic farmland, perhaps stemming from his native roots of Ohio. Saturation, color, and temperatures are prominent in his new pieces creating a stunning visual representation of landscapes from sunrise to sunset.

Robert Lazzarini: wound SOCO Gallery Through January 4 www.soco-gallery.com The works of Robert Lazzarini have been exhibited across the globe since 1995. In his new series, wound, Lazzarini conjures the relationship between a violation of the home and both physical and cognitive exposures. A break-in at its core expresses a certain desperation by the offender and thus revisits common themes within Lazzarini’s work, including the complicated mythos of violence within American culture. 92 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | December 2018
