E
ver since I was a young girl, I’ve had a penchant for color. I remember being fascinated by the names of the Crayola crayons and wanting to submit my own ideas for new introductions. Not much has changed. Today, I see a color and I want to pinpoint exactly what shade it is – robin’s egg blue, aubergine, chartreuse. Just saying those words aloud makes me happy, so it should come as no surprise that I’m eager to present our first In Living Color Issue – a celebration of living vibrantly. Throughout our pages, you will see some of Charlotte’s most colorful homes on display. From the walls and built-ins to the upholstery and rug, designer Laura Archibald swathes her client’s study in rich jewel tones to create a dramatic and luxe space (page 30). A mundane room can be brought to life with just a little color. Charlotte Lucas together with Caren Bistany of Bistany Design transform a master closet into an elegant dressing room using a tranquil aqua hue (page 34). Artist Jean Johnson uses her creativity and resourcefulness – along with family heirlooms – to craft the collected, bohemian vibe that is her home (page 54). Designer Aida Saul transforms a traditional Foxcroft residence into a contemporary dream home using hues that span the color spectrum (page 66). And Charlotte Lucas infuses bold color and vibrant patterns into her Scandinavian clients’ Queen City vacation home – making it their happy place (page 80). I’m excited to announce the launch of our inaugural travel section, Off & Away, which aims to be an insider’s guide to beautiful places to explore and treasures to discover. In this issue, we move from coast to coast to bring you the newest and latest in design. Charlotte tastemaker Laura Vinroot Poole never imagined expanding her iconic store, Capitol. But when an opportunity to partner with friend and jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth in Hollywood’s Brentwood Mart presented itself, Vinroot Poole headed west (page 46). Back on the East Coast, Charleston still has its charm. From pastel-hued historic homes in The Battery to internationally-inspired modern restaurant interiors, Charleston offers myriad destinations for design lovers (page 40). They say do what makes you happy. I say design your happy and do it with color. Together, let’s paint the town!
On the Cover: Using bold pops of color, designer Aida Saul updates a traditional Foxcroft home, giving it a colorful and contemporary modern vibe (page 66).

MAD FOR MEMPHIS Flashback to the future: Memphis design gains momentum in the modern era.
Just one look is all it takes – the vibrant colors, graphic patterns, and bold geometric shapes and figures – and you are immediately transported back in time to the 1980s. Influenced by Art Deco, Pop Art, and 1950s kitsch, the distinctively eccentric movement of the Memphis Group, an Italian postmodern design collective named after Bob Dylan’s song Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, was driven by form rather than function and aimed to produce provocative, outrageous designs – a complete departure from the restrained, minimalist designs of the ’70s. Like all trends, there’s been a resurgence of this distinctively ’80s aesthetic in recent years, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Contemporary artists and designers are carrying the torch by continuing to shock the senses and the status quo with their own take on the movement.

A Study in Color Written by Anne Marie Ashley Photography by Ashley Sellner

nterior designer Laura Archibald has been designing for her clients Gracey and Scott Wooster for many years. When they came to her asking for a redesign of the study, she was eager to perform a makeover. The Woosters wanted to take the space from an ordinary neutral room to something bold and different. In fact, Archibald’s client came with a specific request – she wanted all the walls painted in a high-gloss lacquer. The challenge was deciding on the perfect color. “Not every color is great for a lacquer finish,” Archibald explains. “So it took us a little bit of time to land on a color that was bold and appropriate. We were looking at fabrics, and when
30 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
we got to the pinkish-purple tone in the Osborne & Little fabric we considered for pillows, that’s when it hit us – magenta.” The paint, which was a high-gloss paint that appears as lacquer, was a custom color mixed by Eastway Paint and is from Fine Paints of Europe. “I must have gone back three or four times to get the color exactly right,” Archibald recalls. From there, Archibald decided to go for a tone-on-tone look and chose to reupholster the existing sofa in a shade as close to the wall color as possible – a velvet fabric from Pindler. “I thought that sofa would be perfect in the nook between the bookshelves. The paint really sparked the rest of the room,” Archibald says.

“THE COLORS IN THIS ROOM ARE JEWEL TONES, REDEFINED.” – LAURA ARCHIBALD
A vintage ottoman in white vinyl brings high contrast, and Archibald chose a popular but perfect Stark antelope rug in navy blue. “The magenta and navy blue were really a beautiful combination of colors, and dark tones can still provide contrast without being opposites,” she says. A custom-made console table sits perched beneath the television, painted white with an Ashe wood inlaid on the top. Art by Herb Jackson of Hidell Brooks Gallery brings in the perfect amount of jewel tones to complement the room. 32 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | February / March 2019
Vintage chairs flank the sofa that is covered in a Robert Allen cut velvet fabric, and hardware by Charlotte-based Addison Weeks was chosen for the built-in desk. “I thought the brass hardware with a turquoise stone was an ideal match for the bold colors in the room,” Archibald says. “The colors in this room are jewel tones, redefined,” she continues. “Normally, I hear ‘jewel tones’ and see red, navy, and hunter green, but these are today’s hues, and it’s exciting to design with so much color.”u

This placid whisper of blue-green encapsulates the meeting of sea and sky. Produced by Ashley Hotham Cox Written by Christina Spratt Spencer Vitreous and fluid, the gradients of this tint reminisce gossamer and glassy rays of light filtering through the dynamic depths of the ocean, making it as refreshing and serene as its namesake. Completely unclouded, aqua is assured, poised, and composed, a limpid drop of soothing clarity. A neutral of its own right, aqua kindles a tranquil and timeless sense of balance – clean and crisp when paired with cotton whites, invigorated with tropically inclined coral or citron, or smoky and sophisticated with muddled and murky neutrals, maroon, or mauve. 1. CHERYL Luckett There’s one word that can without a doubt describe interior designer Cheryl Luckett, and that’s busy. On top of running a full-service design firm, Luckett has launched her inaugural furniture line, and she shows no signs of slowing down. “Color will forever inspire me. Whether it’s a beautiful textile, a picturesque seasonal landscape, or an up-close encounter with a favorite perennial, I live for color,” Luckett says. “I love the opportunity to bring life to a client’s home, and color helps me do just that. It can be scary, though, so I work to ensure that the colors infused into each project 1 convey the feeling the client is looking to achieve.” “Growing up in South Mississippi, I was surrounded by the history and grandeur of the South and that included architecture and furnishings,” she says. “To this day, I prefer the classic lines and timeless appeal of antique and vintage furniture. All of the pieces in the Belle by Cheryl Luckett collection for Sylvester Alexander were born out of my affinity and appreciation for what’s old and recreated in a way that makes them fresh and new.”

he secret to exploring Charleston in the summertime is to set your alarm. The city’s charming streets are perfect for wandering on morning strolls – before the throngs of tourists and summer’s heat fill them by midday. Wind down the smaller cobblestone alleys that offer peeks into lush Southern gardens before making your way to the busier avenues of Market and King Streets. Here, you’ll find boutiques and galleries just as gorgeous as the items they hold, and inventive bars and restaurants offering as much flavor in their style as on their plates. Nowhere is Charleston’s transformation into a sophisticated world-renowned destination more evident than at The Dewberry. 40 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
Housed in a former federal building overlooking Marion Square, this stunning hotel is a mid-century design lover’s dream. Its lobby, dubbed the “Living Room,” has the vibe of a Mad Men set with its authentic mid-century furnishing vignettes. The space has quickly become a see-and-be-seen destination where the city’s most beautiful mingle around its brass bar centerpiece imbibing classic cocktails. The Dewberry’s rooms offer luxe details like marble bathrooms, Irish linen bedding, and accents featuring the hotel’s signature botanical print by artist Becca Barnet. And the hotel’s Lowcountry-inspired spa with its dark, curtain-draped rooms and decadent treatments is the perfect cool respite from the city’s bustle and heat.

Be sure to save at least one sunset for The Dewberry’s new Citrus Club. The eighth-floor terrace is the highest rooftop in town and offers sweeping views of Charleston’s streets, steeples, and the water beyond. Sip on citrus cocktails and nibble light bites that are the ideal fare for a warm summer afternoon. There are plenty of other places to drink and dine in Charleston, though. It’s hard to walk down a street without stumbling on some creative new restaurant – that likely houses an award-winning chef inside. Start your day at The Rise Coffee Bar, a chic coffee shop just off King Street featuring local roasts and smooth cold brews. While King Street fills up fast – especially during the summer months – you’ll want to peruse the shops and galleries along this thoroughfare. Stop by Mitchell Hill, a space known for its perfectly curated home decor and local art. And plan a peek inside The Vault on King, a bright and airy 3,600-square-foot modern space featuring an art gallery, studio, and marketplace with designs from around the world. The inspiring concept has its roots in Charlotte. At its helm is photographer Teeny Morrison, who grew up in Charlotte and pulled fellow Charlottean friends, abstract painter Anna Bett Moore and artist Millie Sims, into the business along with seven other female creatives.

When you’re ready for a shopping break, step inside King Street’s popular fashion boutique, The Skinny Dip, and head up its small staircase. On the second floor, you’ll find the shop’s bar and coffee café complete with Instagram-worthy frosé and a rooftop patio with palm fronds and white accents that feels like a secret escape from the crowds below. In the evening, unwind at the new Joséphine Wine Bar featuring a Parisian-inspired interior complete with parquet floors, an ornate mirror, and wine-bottle-covered walls. Order a glass of Burgundy alongside burrata and a crusty baguette, and you’re as close as you can get to the Left Bank while you’re in the Lowcountry. Perhaps the most beautiful new restaurant in town, though, is Tradd’s, a recent addition to East Bay Street’s culinary lineup that, like Charleston, mixes modern and traditional. Its white marble walls, plush banquets, and soft golden accents are elegant and understated, while its dishes like oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail, and caviar are perfectly classic. End your evening with the restaurant’s Boozy Milkshake. It’s a playful mix of coffee ice cream and Six & Twenty Carolina Cream, a sweet cordial made in South Carolina. The local drink in the sleek setting is the perfect cool end to another warm summer day in Charleston.u

California Dreaming Capitol Brentwood in Los Angeles is the perfect complement to Charlotte’s own version.

hen Laura Vinroot Poole first opened Capitol more than twenty years ago, she never imagined there would ever be another iteration of her iconic store. But, as luck would have it, a few months after Capitol celebrated its twentieth anniversary last spring, Vinroot Poole and her architect husband, Perry

I love that its goal is to be this amazing conglomeration of the best stores in the country. There’s Goop, Sid Mashburn, Space NK Apothecary, Roberta Roller Rabbit – some of the most interesting stores. I never wanted to open a second location of Capitol, but I told myself

that if I ever were to do it, this would be the only place I would.” Since giving the green light in October, the Pooles’ team of architects and designers including designer Scott Newkirk, architect Drew Button, and designer Margaret Farnham, got to work on creating the space. “We had to revise the first iteration of the design because it was too simple and sweet; too stereotypical of the South,” Vinroot Poole says. “My clients and my roots are more complex. We are a complicated bunch, full of myriad contradictions, and I wanted the store to reflect that in addition to the graciousness, the warmth, and the hospitality that are a big part of our heritage.” The result of the revision: a space that couples the Pooles’ warmth and laid-back elegance with the spirit of both California and the South. As you weave through Capitol Brentwood, new design elements and displays pique curiosity while encouraging you to move from room to room. “This layout was intentional,” Newkirk says. “We wanted you to discover something new every turn you take.” In “the Parlor,” which

serves as the centerpiece of the store, you’ll find a rare Serge Mouille one-arm swing lamp and a pair of Jacques Adnet floor lamps, which illuminate a linen Charlotte Perriand daybed with red leather piping. A large lacquered multipanel screen features a de Gournay hand-painted wallpaper (similar to the one in the Charlotte Capitol) developed by Perry Poole Architects (PPA) that incorporates a lemon tree, a toucan and an opossum amongst palm trees, and tropical plants and flowers – a nod to both the South and California. The rest of the space features pieces pulled from the Pooles’ personal collection, most notably a rosewood George Nelson shelving unit and a monumental Oregon pine display cabinet by 50 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
Tom Hobgood – a stunning display for accessories and luxurious dresses from the collections of Rosie Assoulin and Peter Pilotto. At the front of the store is jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth’s collection. (Neuwirth and Vinroot Poole are close friends and collaborated on the store’s design.) The space, designed by Pam Shamshiri of Studio Shamshiri, complements PPA’s design. “The shop’s design feels at once familiar and unexpected with a healthy dose of wonder and whimsy,” Shamshiri explains. “Stepping into a Capitol store feels like entering a friend’s home,” Perry Poole says. “Hospitality is core to who Laura is, and our top priority was to translate that relaxed, intimate feeling into the design.” Mission accomplished.u

hen Jean Johnson and her husband first began dating in New York, they never intended to end up back in Charlotte. Her husband, a native Charlottean, grew up on Canterbury Street, but New York was the new norm and the new hometown. When he was offered a job at Bank of America, however, the pair couldn’t say no, and back to Charlotte they came. They enlisted the help of Johnson’s mother-in-law for their home search, and as crazy luck and circumstance would have it, a home became available – on Canterbury Street. Johnson fell in love immediately. “I admit I walked through the home with rose-colored glasses the first time,” Johnson recalls. “I remember finding gum and writing on the walls in a walkthrough after we signed
the contract and realizing it was in pretty bad shape. But I saw the potential and was really excited to get to work.” With a background in fashion and textiles and an MFA from SCAD, Johnson knew she could make this run-down house a home fit for their family . . . in time. “The first couple of years, sadly, were spent fixing things you don’t see,” she laments, “electrical, facia, insulation, etc.” Two years into the new home, and newly pregnant with their first child, Johnson worked with contractors to renovate their kitchen, knocking down a wall and adding cabinets. They removed tiling and replaced it with hardwood floors. At the same time, they updated one of the two master bedrooms and bathroom, ripping it out entirely and starting over. “The house was built in 1951, with the second master being added in the ’60s – and it was so obviously done in the ’60s,” Johnson says. “There was a huge vanity in the middle of the room along with a small toilet and shower on a separate but raised level just beyond it. It was completely strange, and we used that room as storage for the first full two years we lived here.” They gutted the space, creating a separate bedroom and bathroom, and adding a closet perfect for the room. 60 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
The remainder of the home, as Johnson puts it, has been a work in progress and still has things to be done. “We want to work on the backyard, and I am constantly editing as I go along.” Most of the things in Johnson’s home are inherited or found locally in consignment shops with some treasures found in the Lowcountry as well. “I have a booth at Cotswold Marketplace,
so I am partial to it being an incredible resource, but I also love Slate Interiors and Sleepy Poet, and I make a habit of visiting the Habitat ReStore,” Johnson says. “I can almost always find a gem or, at the very least, get inspired.” Her in-laws lived in Argentina for a time and have passed down many things that make

Johnson’s home interesting. “All the brightly colored pieces no one wanted, I loved, and I wanted,” she says. When asked what influences Johnson’s style, her response comes as no surprise because it’s so clearly represented at every turn: textiles, natural found objects, animals (especially turkeys, bugs, and sea life), music, travel, worldly pieces, family keepsakes, and, of course, color. “My secret to making your home look layered is to buy what you love when you see it – doesn’t matter if it has a purpose yet, you will always find a

place for it,” she says. “Style with objects that are meaningful, and make comfort a priority.” She also suggests calling in help if you’re stuck, using herself as a perfect example. Last year, Johnson called friends Angie Perrson and Merrin Lowe from Swell Décor to help her design her office space and bring her vision to life. “Designers can get stuck, especially with personal spaces, and I was definitely stuck,” Johnson admits. “They gave me the exact ideas I needed to move forward, particularly help choosing the most perfect
green for my walls: Gecko by Sherwin-Williams. They also suggested lots of functional IKEA pieces that keep it all organized but fresh.” She found the ideal navy-blue antelope rug to complete the room and, alas, it all came together. The kitchen and den are Johnson’s two favorite spaces. “I love all the light in the kitchen. We have no rules on messiness, so it’s easy to use and a true outlet for us as a family,” she explains. “I love the den because it holds so many memories. I love the layout with a view into our ‘backyard jungle,’ the vaulted ceiling, and the Stark rug that I snagged for $250 at the outlet.”u

hen Paige Roselle and her husband walked into one of the Symphony Guild’s showhouses many years ago, they fell in love with the possibilities. The gorgeous lot located in Foxcroft was not only ideally
situated across the street from their children’s school, Charlotte Country Day, but the bones of the house were essential for how they wanted to live as a family. They snatched it up and have spent the past thirteen years editing it to perfection. “The property and lot were just beautiful – full of trees,” Roselle says. “It was a short walk to Country Day with our June/July 2019 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 69

children, and although the interiors weren’t our style at all, we loved the feel of it. I knew I wanted to design the interiors around our family.” The family waited a year to move in so they could do some basic renovations to the home. Since then, they have added a bathroom for one of their children, a home gym, and finished most of the unfinished attic space in the second story of the home. “Most recently, we added a pool house and redid our kitchen,” Roselle adds. Along the way, Roselle had been into the homes of some friends who used Aida Saul for their interior design and fell in love with the way she mixed styles, used color, and stayed true to the homeowners’ tastes. “I had shopped at Aida’s boutique in Charlotte, Luxe, many times for my home, so I got to know her that way, and when I saw her work in action, I was blown away,” Roselle says. “We instantly meshed.” From working with architects during more significant changes to choosing finishes, fabrics, and everything in between, Saul and Roselle have worked together on many projects in this home. “When I landed in the house, it was very traditional,” Saul recalls. “Paige wanted to update her family’s style, taking it from more traditional to a contemporary and modern vibe.” Roselle adds, “Yes, Aida has moved through many stages of life with me, from when my budget was smaller through larger. I’ve been so blessed to have Aida create the spaces our family loves.” Roselle says that her family and then color are the greatest influences when designing. “I have to think of my family first; we live here every day.

But I love color, especially blue, so I knew I had to have pops of blue throughout the home. Those are my favorite rooms.” Together, Saul and Roselle chose pieces that were highly functional and kid-friendly – and, of course, occasionally blue. “Paige’s tastes have evolved quite a bit,” Saul explains. “She developed a love of art, so we’ve incorporated a lot of pieces from 72 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
SOCO Gallery in Charlotte throughout the home alongside some older, cherished pieces. We wanted to incorporate the new while paying homage to the old.” Saul specifically points to a gorgeous fourteen-foot Chinese screen that she deems “probably museumworthy.” Roselle used many of her heirloom antiques alongside the new and more modern style that Saul infused into every room.
In the den, Saul ditched the entirely traditional feel for a more colorful and contemporary aesthetic, complete with a bold blue sectional and a newly upholstered citron loveseat. “We kept the family photos and got rid of the rest,” she says. In the kitchen, Saul did a “minor facelift,” as she puts it, reworking some cabinetry on one wall to create more storage and

make it functional. They built a new island, repainted cabinets, and added a new hood. “My mother taught me how to make a home welcoming and warm to all those who visit, and I truly try to impart this on every client’s home,” Saul says. “If you enhance how people live and make the house a reflection of them, they feel imminently happier, and having clients who can’t wait to get home is one of the best compliments there is.” When asked what her design
76 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
secret is, Roselle laughs and says, “Aida is my design secret! And I am happy to share this tip with everyone.” Saul shares some of her secrets about making this home look collected and eclectic, revealing that most of the lamps and accessories are vintage from flea markets like Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta, online at 1stdibs and Chairish, and locally at Darnell & Company and Slate Interiors. Saul designed the rug in the living room and had it custom made at Stark Carpet,
and the Moroccan rugs in the den and pool house are from Charlotte Rug Gallery. As if Roselle and Saul didn’t agree on enough, they both choose the study as one of their favorite rooms. “Blue makes me smile,” Roselle says. Saul adds, “I love the aqua lacquer we chose for the walls, and the ombre curtains bring this ethereal, almost magical feel.”u
Left & Right: The kitchen got a “minor facelift” according to Saul, with newly painted cabinets, a new hood from Artistic Ironworks, and a mirror-tiled Versailles backsplash from Ann Sacks. Lee Bongo stools covered in Pindler vinyl fabric are perfect for the spills and thrills of the kitchen environment. Local artisan Josh Utsey created the hand-blown glass and brass pendants that hang over the bar along with the walnut tabletop in the breakfast area. Velvet drapes in fabric from Knoll Textiles add a funky vintage pattern to the room, while Phillip Jeffries cork wallcovering in Navy Enchanted Woods furthers the agenda.

old pops of color and dynamic prints create an immediate impact upon entry into the Charlotte vacation home that Charlotte Lucas of Charlotte Lucas Interior Design created for a European family. “The clients do not have these kinds of bright colors in their permanent residence,” Lucas says. “But they were willing to go a little bit out of their comfort zone and do some splashes of color here. They just wanted it to be a happy place.” The clients – a couple from Norway with two young daughters – had seen Lucas’ work on Instagram and reached out to her through email. “Charlotte’s use of colors and way of combining old and new looked perfect for our project,” the homeowner offers. “We normally spend our summers in Charlotte, and we were looking for a place that could be a home away from home but still give us that ‘vacation’ feeling. Our design requirements were pretty basic: color, light, fun.” Having never met the clients prior to starting on the house, Lucas’ team emailed them questionnaires and talked with them on the phone. “Charlotte and her team were great at communicating with us and making sure they understood what we wanted and who we were,” the homeowner explains. “From there, they just took control and came up with something that we were blown away with when we walked in the door for the first time.” Since the clients were abroad, they needed a turnkey design service, so Lucas and her designers started with a completely blank slate and sourced all products in the house, from the sofa to the silverware and everything in between. Through very detailed hand-drawn renderings, the designers were able to express to the clients their interior design concept and walk them through various design details, including the unfettered use of color. “The dining room sets the stage for the rest of the house,” Lucas explains of her decision to pair a floral wallcovering with dining chairs covered in bright teal velvet set atop a leopard-print rug. “We really wanted the space to be bold, colorful, and exciting because that’s the first thing you see when you walk in.” The key to successfully employing so much color and pattern throughout the home is achieving balance. The

chairs upholstered in solid velvet complement the patterned walls and floors in the dining room, while in the family room Lucas clad the walls in grasscloth to provide richness and texture and added a vibrant floral sofa, animal-print club chairs, and hand-painted credenzas. For the master bedroom, Lucas created a serene place for the couple with a blue and white palette. A floral wallcovering offers a subtle backdrop to the vintage furniture, including the bed, mirrors, and Dorothy Draper chests repurposed as nightstands. “We wanted that space to be a little bit more toned down but still feel alive and fresh and fit in with the rest of the house,” Lucas says.
Color reemerges in the two daughters’ rooms, which were designed to suit each girl’s unique personality. For the youngest, who was in first grade at the time, Lucas wanted to create “something fun, whimsical, and not too babyish.” Varying shades of pink are executed in a more refined way by pairing a geometric-print wallcovering with floral window treatments and solid upholstery on the window seat. The homeowner said that her younger daughter would sleep in a hammock if she could, so that prompted the design team to install a swinging hammock chair as a final whimsical touch. The older daughter, who was in the tween stage, has a penchant for greys and blues, so the designers devised something

And we use modern lines complemented with modern furniture, so I think we achieved a really fun kind of fresh feel for her.” Lucas feels confident that she delivered the fun, happy vacation home that the clients were seeking. “When we design for people, I usually say, ‘I want your house to be the best version of yourself.’ And without having physically met these people, I was really hoping that was the case here,” Lucas offers, adding that she was most pleased to visit the family once they’d moved in to see how contentedly they had settled into the home. “The common areas of the house represent the way we want to live when we’re on vacation,” the homeowner says. “We’re so pleased with the house that we consider it Top: The designers covered the powder room walls in Cole & Son green patterned wallpaper, mirrored one entire wall, moved the sconce by Visual Comfort, and added a vintage brass decorative mirror over the vanity. The same textile was used for the window treatments and to create matching custom wallpaper.

Immerse yourself in splendor at Seabrook Island. Written by Lee Rhodes Photography courtesy of Seabrook Island Club
T
he promise of cool ocean breezes and proximity to Charleston is what first interests many in the coastal community of Seabrook Island, with barefoot ease and a vibe that suits any lifestyle. But it’s the seamless balance between the stunning natural landscape and the world-class amenities that attracts people here.
94 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
Caleb Elledge, general manager of the Seabrook Island Club, describes it as a private, yet warm and welcoming community. “Seabrook Island attracts residents from across the globe, and with good reason. It’s is a coastal barrier island that is defined by unspoiled beauty,” Elledge says. Three miles of pristine beaches vie for the attention of members and guests, who also enjoy the lush maritime forest and tidal marshes, a true island paradise.
Responsible planning ensures that the island’s natural assets and unique ecosystems remain protected. “Seabrook Island boasts a strong sense of community, supported by the healthy, vibrant lifestyle it promotes, from horseback riding to tennis to golf to fitness,” Elledge explains. The full-service, twenty-two-acre Equestrian Center not only offers one of the only beach rides on the East Coast, but there are also miles of meandering trails to explore. The Racquet Club has been ranked a “Top 25 Resort” by Tennis magazine and sports fifteen Har-Tru clay courts, new pickleball courts, and a pro shop. For an uncrowded game of golf, there are two challenging Audubon-certified courses set amongst the stunning natural surroundings. The Seabrook Island Clubhouse, perched overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and North Edisto River, offers magnificent options for both casual and formal dining, a —Caleb Elledge golf pro shop, and venue spaces for receptions, special events, and weddings. Al fresco dining, shimmering pools, and plenty of space for basking in the sun are available at the impressive Beach Club and pool complex. The Lake House community center offers a state-of-the-art health and fitness facility, indoor and outdoor pools, and more. Other amenities include a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment choices, as well as a full-service marina with
deep-water access just outside the gate. Seabrook offers the feel of endless summer, all year long. Rental homes, townhouses, villas, homesites, and luxury homes are available. Seabrook Island: Fast Facts Location, Location, Location: Seabrook is a private, gated community located about twenty-five miles southwest of Charleston. Island Community: Seabrook Island is primarily a residential and second-home community with no commercial entities or high rises to mar the island’s natural beauty. There are more than 2,500 property owners from all over the world, and more than seven hundred families make Seabrook their year-round home.
“Seabrook Island attracts residents from across the globe, and with good reason.”
Wide Beaches: This 2,200-acre island features some of the widest beaches on the East Coast.
Endless Amenities: In addition to boating, golf, tennis, and fitness options, the Equestrian Center caters to riders of all skill levels with guided trail rides, beach rides, pony rides, and riding lessons. Magnolia Paint Company helps you get color right the first time.
Interviewed by Lee Rhodes Photography courtesy of Benjamin Moore and Lauren Nicole Designs
M
agnolia Paint Company is an independentlyowned Benjamin Moore retailer that offers a true color showroom experience. Clients can find a relaxed environment full of natural daylight, work areas, and oversized color samples to help make sound
color decisions. With two stores in Charlotte and plans for expansion, Magnolia Paint is nothing like traditional paint stores. Rather than searching through tiny paint chips under a sea of fluorescent lights, clients can work with professional color consultants, in-house or in-showroom, who will advise them not only on color, finish, and product, but will also refer painters and help interpret bids. Clients can take advantage of the store’s unique color-board service where a consultant will custom paint twenty-four-by-eighteen-inch samples in the color of your choice, eliminating the hassle of painting on walls and collecting countless paint samples in your garage. Home Design & Decor sits down with Lisa Jenkins, color and design representative at Magnolia Paint, to hear more. What sets Benjamin Moore paint apart? Benjamin Moore has always been regarded in the industry as best in class with a price point for every budget. And just like any product, it’s all about the ingredients that go into it. We make our own resins and pigments – the stuff in paint that gives it durability and beauty. Our proprietary colorant system – made up of thirteen water-based pigments – is at the heart of every color we make. It’s how Benjamin Moore colors get their richness and why it’s nearly impossible to match our colors into other paint brands. Color matching is like trying to make grandma’s cookies with margarine instead of butter – you’re working with different ingredients, and they’re just not going to taste the same. This is especially true with our Benjamin Moore Off White Collection. For example, when mixing the ever-popular White Dove, we will use our gray colorant instead of black colorant. Gray softens colors and allows more light to be reflected off the surface, giving your wall a luminous quality. We use that gray colorant in almost all of our whites. It’s one of the secret ingredients that has made our Off White Collection famous with designers. Other manufacturers don’t have a gray in their colorant system, making our colors really hard to replicate. 98 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
What color trends are you seeing? We are dominated by whites and neutrals as everyone is decluttering and quieting their interiors and brightening their exteriors. Neutrals are getting much warmer – the greiges (half beige and half gray) are moving toward a light putty, and the whites are getting creamier – a countertrend to all the cool gray we’ve seen. We are also doing a lot of complex deeps—indigos or off-blacks that lean toward green or blue. I’m smitten with Cobalt from the new Century Collection. It’s the combination of its soft-touch matte finish and deep pigmentation that just takes your breath away!
What is your favorite color? That’s hard, but I’d have to say Sugar Cube. We did a custom palette with Lauren Nicole Designs, a well-known Charlotte designer, and created a new white for her. It’s a beautiful, luminous white that makes a space glow. There are actually five different colorants that go into it, which is kind of crazy color science when you see how bright it is. It’s techy, colortheory stuff, so we just say Sugar Cube has fairy dust in it. It’s the best way to describe that color! —Lisa Jenkins
color consultation. We use large eighteen-inch color boards in our consultations so you can see the true undertones and make good decisions quickly. Choosing color can be daunting, so working with someone who has knowledge of the palette and understands the rules of lighting and color theory can help avoid expensive mistakes. We are advocates for the homeowner and help them through the entire paint project – from the right color to the right product to the right painter. We are about color and quality first.u

What design trends are we seeing? Can you speak to the latest in color, artwork, lighting, et cetera? We area seeing a trend toward more color and deeper tones. We are getting away from the all-gray rooms and are seeing more earth-tone naturals with interjections of color. As lighting trends go, we are seeing more statement fixtures and more contemporary fixtures replace traditional ones. We are also in love with wall sconces, which are major right now. Artwork is still extremally personal and has to speak to the client. We always trend toward more modern artwork, and this is a great way to get color into —Eric Ennis your design.
design doesn’t happen overnight. We live in such a here-and-now society, and everyone wants everything yesterday. If you are doing a renovation, keep your structural elements classic and earth-toned, but interject fun in ways that can easily be changed over time, such as with wallpaper, paint, artwork, lighting, et cetera. Any recent success stories you want to share? There is a kitchen remodel that was a great success. The design was simple, and just by taking one wall down, the kitchen felt like it doubled in size even though the square footage did not change. This kitchen was designed to keep the cook and guests out of each other’s way. It’s always to good idea to think about how the kitchen is going to be used and try to have two zones: one for cooking and one for entertaining.u
“A well-designed space is like a great wine – it takes time to become layered and find all of the right pieces.”
What tips do you suggest for people looking to redecorate or renovate? A well-designed space is like a great wine – it takes time to become layered and find all of the right pieces. Be patient; great

On the Road By Jim Noble Photography by The Plaid Penguin
We just wrapped another research trip for Noble Smoke last week. There was a field-trip energy in the air as we gathered early at the Rooster’s parking lot to begin our two-day excursion to some of Carolina’s best barbecue places. Along the way, others joined us, including one of my oldest friends Randy. We were ten people strong. And hungry. Someone brought Krispy Kreme donuts, a thoughtful act that makes me chuckle considering how much barbecue we were about to eat. It set the tone, though. We would be breaking (corn)bread together for the next two days. Our first stop (and first tray of barbecue) was at Lexington Barbecue. Several of us sat with owner Wayne Monk and chatted with him for a good while. Others made conversation with his wife, Nancy, and the warm and friendly staff, who served up packed trays of coarsely chopped pork shoulder, hush puppies straight from the hot oil, slaw, and smoked-turkey sandwiches. It was ten in the morning, but this did not slow anyone down. The eating continued even after we boarded the Sprinter van for our next stop. “Be sure to try the turkey sandwich.” “Can you pass me a hush puppy?” “What was your favorite?” “Coarse chopped barbecue, all the way.”
“The act of sharing a meal creates connection.” It went on like this the whole day. Someone would place an order for the entire team; someone else would get the table; another person would grab the forks and extra plates. The food would arrive in bags, on trays, in Styrofoam containers, and we’d all get to work – cutting barbecue sandwiches in halves or quarters, passing the sides around, insisting that folks try this or that. By the time we were done visiting Sam Jones BBQ and Skylight Inn, we could probably pick each other’s favorites off any menu. Some of us work together every day and have traveled together in the past. Others were joining in for the first time. Regardless, we took care of each other at the table as though we were family. This could be because everyone is attached to the hospitality industry. But I think it’s more than that. It’s been written about many times, probably because it’s so plainly true: the act of sharing a meal creates connection. We find common ground, even if it’s over a simple topic like what we enjoyed most on our plates. We learn about each other, even if it’s just a basic fact, like the way someone prefers their tea – half and half, unsweet, not at all. We make hefty deposits in the memory bank as funny stories get swapped and new ones are formed. New friendships often begin in this way. Old friendships get reinforced. Perhaps the only other thing that can accomplish this so quickly is a road trip. I’m looking forward to the next one.u

Do Your Homework By Brad Little Photography by Deborah Scannell and Lassiter Photography
As you embark on your remodeling journey, homework is key to a successful transformation. Fortunately, you have a wide range of choices when it comes to choosing the professional who will guide you through the process of designing, planning, and executing your renovation, but deciding whom to choose is possibly the most important decision you will make. Once you’ve narrowed down your list to two or three remodeling professionals, it’s important to prepare for your meetings so they can apply their expertise to your specific needs. Here are some easy – but critical – bits of homework to help you prepare:
108 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
Think through your short-term and long-term plans. Whether you intend to sell your home within the next five years or plan to stay in your home until your last day on earth will make a big difference in how you approach and budget for your project. Your remodeling professional will help you make prudent decisions related to your plans. Decide how involved you will be. There will be myriad choices and decisions that you will be asked to make when it comes to planning your project. You may want to be very involved with every single one of those decisions, or you may choose to defer many of those decisions to your remodeling professional and trust them to guide you with
“Homework is key to a successful transformation.” their expertise and experience. Letting them know which decisions are most important to you is key. Identify your “big rocks.” Don’t overwhelm yourself with details early on. Focus on your headline goals, such as wanting your kitchen to have better traffic flow or wanting a more modern bathroom. It’s OK if you already know specifics like colors and products you want to use, but most of the time those are the “little rocks” that will fill in around the “big rocks” as your project-planning progresses. Set your expectations for timing. The amount of time required for planning, preparing, and constructing your project can vary greatly depending on the size and scope of the project. Your remodeling professional may also have a backlog of projects that will impact when they can begin work on yours. If you have a deadline such as the birth of a child, a major event such as a wedding or graduation, or anything else that will conflict with having your home partially under construction, make sure you share that with your remodeling team early on. Talk to friends and neighbors. If you know others who have gone through a remodeling project, ask what they might have done differently. Yes, you can watch remodeling shows and read stories on the internet to get a baseline of what to expect, but having real-life conversations with people you know and trust is usually a better way to get valuable information.u

Elegant Calm By Beth Keim Photography by Mekenzie Loli
When designing a master bedroom, I spend a lot of time talking with my clients to understand what calms them. When you think of a relaxed bedroom, it can mean just about anything, but tranquil color and soft, luxurious fabrics first come to mind. In designing this client’s bedroom, we went with the elegance of white-on-white with full drapes and beautiful bedding. The colors in this space all meld together to create a peaceful and sophisticated look. The bedroom is soothing, simple, and soft, with a touch of crystal “glam” overhead – a modern take on a traditional look. In its style and scale, the look is also in keeping with the house as a whole. In some cases, though, calm can mean a room filled with unique objects like beautiful art, funky furniture, or mementos from a special trip. It can be a room layered with bright fabrics and wallpapers or books and objects. It can also be a minimalist

room with a floating platform bed and simple side lamps where it’s all about the view outside. Your bedroom is your haven, your quiet spot, your thoughtful place. It’s where you wash away a rough day, revisit a glorious day, or just reconnect. Your bedroom can be as personal as you are, so whatever you can imagine, you can do. It’s yours. Tips for your master bedroom: • You do not (and should not) buy all matching bedroom pieces. • Create an accent wall. Generally, it’s the wall you face when you walk into the room. • Incorporate a nonfunctional version of simple bamboo blinds, which could cut the price in half, so you can have those amazing (and expensive) drapes you’ve been wanting. • Fill the room with your favorite scent. • Invest in good bed linens – they are worth every penny! u

COLOR YOUR WORLD WITH CONFIDENCE By Laura Wood and the Ethan Allen Design Team
Color is every designer’s essential trick of the trade, a go-to tool that works well in small doses. It’s the not-so-secret secret to creating memorable rooms that draw you in and invite you to stay. Many of our clients hesitate to use color, so we recommend starting small. Create a foundation with larger upholstery pieces, such as sofas and sectionals, and wood furniture in neutral finishes. Then introduce color – with rugs, artwork, pillows, throws, and accents. This way, when trends change or you want to mix things up, it’s simple to bring in some new hues. Here are a few easy ways to use color to enhance your home:
116 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | June/July 2019
FLUFF IT UP Pillows work color magic in any room. They add pop like nothing else, so be bold with prints, patterns, and embellishments – but don’t overdo it. Too many colors (and too many pillows in general) defeat the purpose of creating visual interest in a soft and simple way. HIT THE WALL We often suggest painting an accent wall as an easy, cost-effective way to create a focal point. We usually recommend a color a few shades darker than the rest of the walls. A plus: Red, yellow, or orange can turn up the heat in a room, while cooler colors like blue, green, or purple can open up smaller spaces.
GET THE HANG OF IT To be clear, we don’t recommend choosing a piece of art solely because it picks up a color in a room. A work of art that hangs in your home should be in sync with your furnishings and make you happy. That said, a colorful print or painting can work wonders. If you love it – and it happens to complement your palette in a pleasing way – all the better!
“Color is the not-sosecret secret to creating memorable rooms that draw you in and invite you to stay.”
LOOK DOWN A bold rug (solid or patterned) may be an obvious way to infuse a space with color, but some people don’t like too much drama underfoot. A simple trick: Place neutral furnishings on and around your statement-making rug – the contrast will delight you.
COZY UP There’s nothing like the ease and portability of placing a colorful throw on an ottoman, on the edge of a chaise, or over the back of a sofa. Layer a few in different shades or textures for fun with numbers and extra pop.u
