Get Cozy

A

nd just like that, fall has arrived in the Carolinas. While wrapping up in its coziness, I find myself a bit more relaxed as I embrace the changing leaves, cheer on my favorite football teams (go Panthers! go Gamecocks!), and rejoice in all things pumpkin spice. My family has long outlived spring fever and unstructured summer days. Now you will find us mesmerized by the background noise of a crackling fire while relaxing on our back porch. It is the season to delight in oyster roasts, s’mores, tailgates, and fall festivals. While Mother Nature forges a rustic backdrop outdoors, our team at Home Design & Decor is here to provide you with an abundance of inspiration for your interiors. In this issue, interior designers share innovative ways in which they are interpreting and incorporating wallcoverings into a space. Going beyond residential design, we have the unique opportunity to bring you a glimpse of some of the city’s most notable hotels and the interior designers behind them. Additionally, designers Holly Hollingsworth Phillips, Caroline Brackett, and a team of modern geniuses spearheaded by Sarah Catherine Garvin infuse comfort and sophistication in the distinguished homes featured throughout this issue. We invite you to grab a blanket and join us fireside as we relish in the crisp surroundings and welcome the changing, yet inspiring, palette that now encompasses us. Warmly, Angie

On the

Map How the city’s hotel interior design is proving that Charlotte is a hot bed for design in the South By Blake Miller

C

harlotte has fast become a hot bed for design. In the last ten years alone, the city has seen an emergence of hotels, restaurants, storefronts, and more that are exceptional examples of Southern-inspired design. While restaurants like Suffolk Punch and Haberdish and clothing

boutiques like Capitol are leading the way when it comes to striking commercial interiors, the city’s newest (alongside one enduring favorite) hotel accommodations are quickly helping to establish Charlotte as a design force to be reckoned with. Here’s a look at three of the top properties in the Queen City that boast stellar interior design.

24 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | October / November 2017

Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel Kimpton hotels are known for

their sophisticated and elegant interiors and the hotel collection’s latest addition, Tryon Park, is no exception. Designer Susan Caruso of Marina Del Ray, California-based design firm IntraSpec Hospitality Design transformed the 217-room property with modern Southern-inspired decor that feels rich yet comfortable. (Caruso previously designed the interiors of another Kimpton project, the Argonaut Hotel in San Francisco.) In true Kimpton fashion, the attention to detail in both the service and the design are of the utmost priority, so you can expect architectural detailing and elegant finishes throughout.

HIGHLIGHTS The millwork As a LEED-certified gold property, the team could only source materials within a 500-mile radius or less. In the public areas of the hotel, Caruso opted to use local red oak, which was then stained to look like mahogany resulting in a rich, luxurious yet cozy feel to the hotel the moment you walk in.

The rooftop Atop the 19th floor of the hotel, the spacious 4,500-square-foot rooftop bar, Merchant & Trade, provides birdseye views of some of the city’s top attractions including Romare Bearden Park. But it’s the restaurant’s oversize retractable roof that’s the design draw here, offering an indoor/outdoor feel year-round.

The lighting Most of the lighting throughout the hotel was custom designed by Caruso and the Kimpton team including the dramatic crystal chandelier hanging in the entryway of the hotel. This threestories-high piece features undulating crystal drops and doubles as a piece of artwork and functional light. “The illumination it creates can be seen from outside the hotel in the evening, which is pretty spectacular,” Caruso says.

The wallcoverings In the guestrooms (including the 1,300-square-foot Presidential Suite) and ballrooms, you’ll find a silvery damask wall covering, which was commissioned for Tryon Park Hotel. “The ballrooms are wrapped in this silver wallcovering and creates a sophisticated look,” Caruso says. “And it helps with acoustics.”

The Duke Mansion This historic gem has

been a mainstay in the boutique hotel scene in Charlotte (and the Southeast) for decades. In the last eight years or so, though, the interiors have been given a gentle overhaul by interior designer Jane Schwab whose eponymous firm continues to tweak the interiors every few months. “The Duke Mansion is exquisitely beautiful architecturally,” Schwab says. “The proportions and the scale of the architectural details are stunning. It’s perfection for this style house.” The idea behind the updated interiors was to “create an environment within such an expansive space that would be intimate and encourage gatherings anywhere from 200 to 300 people to 15 to 20 people.”

HIGHLIGHTS The foyer Schwab worked hand-in-hand with Duke Mansion staff to modernize the interiors with the first step being to revamp the entrance. Schwab freshened up the space by switching the paint color from the mansion’s classic yellow to a more modern, neutral hue – Benjamin Moore Philadelphia Cream. “So many events take place on property and so many people want to customize their florals, so this neutral color works best,” Schwab explains. The blue accents Drawing inspiration from an original painting of founder Doris Duke as a young girl, which hangs in the entry of the mansion, Schwab added doses of soft blue throughout the interiors, most notably in the entrance hallway where a pair of settees swathed in a stunning blue-and-gold brocade fabric by Suzanne Tucker provide comfortable seating. In other rooms, blue-and-white glass jars and

26 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | October / November 2017

bowls Schwab uncovered in the mansion double as accessories and vessels for florals. Organic accessories Though the interior design is wholly traditional, Schwab wanted to create a high/ low appeal to make the interiors feel more accessible and casual while also elegant. To achieve this, she added straw baskets underneath the gold consoles in the entryway. Original features To address the dated interiors of the guest bedrooms, Schwab worked with some of the original design details and built off them. The Dowd Suite features floor-to-ceiling drapery in a Kelly green-and-white botanical print, which was added in 1995. To complement this, Schwab designed a new headboard, swapped out the existing sheets for clean, white bed linens, and added an ottoman in a Brunschwig & Fils fabric to match the existing club chair.

The Ivey’s Hotel In a city where so much

of history has been torn down, The Ivey’s Hotel is a breath of fresh air. Formerly the J.B. Ivey & Company department store, which dates back to the 1920s, the building has undergone a rebirth with the renovation and addition of this boutique 42-room hotel. Truly a team effort, the interiors were designed by Brett Kreuger, principal at the MRK Hotel Collection and owners of the hotel, and Miami-based designer Nick Alain. (MRK Hotel Collection is also behind the stunning Windsor Hotel in Asheville.) The coupling of an hotelier’s love for interior design with an interior design pro resulted in an ultimate combination of Art Deco-meetsmid-century-modern with a steam punk vibe in a pre-War historic building.

HIGHLIGHTS The floors An avid traveler, Krueger found 500-yearold oak beams from a vineyard in France that his gut told him to buy. “I knew I’d use them for a project at some point down the road,” he says. But having them cut into hardwood flooring proved difficult, as mill after mill turned down Krueger’s request for fear the beams would fall apart during the cutting process. Finally, a mill out of Atlanta agreed, and now those stunning French oak floors can be found throughout the entire Ivey’s Hotel.

the guest room hallways, and a framed 100year-old map of France.

Vintage everywhere Krueger’s love for collecting during his travels proved to be a great source for the hotel’s interior design. Throughout The Ivey’s Hotel, you’ll find vintage clock faces (Krueger collected more than 10,000 from his travels) framed in a shadow box, early 20th century French magazine ads along

Framed history Krueger and his team hung photos from the Ivey family throughout the Tulip Room, the hotel’s meeting space. Family photos from Thanksgiving and Christmas at the department store are hung alongside a smattering of photos of the family throughout the 1920s and beyond.

Exposed brick Though much of the historic architectural detailing of the building was wiped out during a renovation in 1995, the original brick columns from the building remain in the lobby. A nod to the Ivey’s original facade, Krueger and Alain brought the outside in by adding exposed brick walls to the guest rooms resulting in a rustic elegance to every space.

Wall EYE

A beautiful wallcovering can give your room a perfectly polished — or tailored — look. By Aleigh Acerni Whether it has a subtle shimmer, refined texture, or bold pattern, wallpapers have a universal appeal. Although it’s an enduring trend — the first wallpapers were developed in the 15th century — wallcoverings

have enjoyed a recent renaissance with the creation of some truly interesting and modern designs. We caught up with five local designers to highlight the versatility and beauty of this perennial design piece.

“Aside from its beautiful and bold hue, what I love most is the dual experience this pattern offers. From a few steps back, you recognize the overall classic trellis shape. Up close, the tiny symbolic details come to life — a clever twist!” Fez in Cobalt, $140 per roll, www.thejungalow.com

“The always-beautiful de Gournay – their hand-painted silk papers are true works of art. I think de Gournay often gets pigeonholed into being super traditional, but they have gorgeous papers for any design aesthetic. They also allow for complete customization, which is invaluable and oftentimes a necessity when you can’t find just the right thing.” St. Laurent, contact for pricing, www.ainsworth-noah.com October / November 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 33

“Wallpaper can be a big commitment, but if you want the look, there are plenty of peel and stick options that are fabulous. This speckled cheetah pattern is one of my all-time favorites. It adds a chic, interesting vibe to any space, and since it’s black and white, you can really play with accent colors. There aren’t many spaces this wouldn’t work in, but I really love seeing it in hallways and entryways!” Speckled Dot in Black, $29.99 per roll, www.target.com

Nature’s unrefined allure finds its way to the great indoors. By Christina Spratt Spencer

Sun-blanched textiles, warm burled grains, uncultivated textures, and a medley of natural elements have become the new focus of design as reversion to the raw and primitive seeks to enable the rediscovery of the very foundational beauty in nature. After years of painting, staining, gilding, lacquering, and polishing to perfection, we now take a step back.

Mrs. Howard | Max & Company “I draw inspiration from a lot of different places. Since I work in so many different parts of the country, one of the first things I look to for inspiration is the location itself. I am currently working on projects in Palm Beach, Atlanta, Linville, Asheville, and Southampton, NY. In each area, there are so many beautiful colors and textures found in the natural surroundings. When I first visit a new project, I am very aware and observant of the surroundings, as well as the local vernacular architecture.” “Additionally, I draw inspiration from my clients. I am a good listener and I really probe so that I can design the house of their dreams, not mine. I always tell them, ‘You will live here, I will leave.’ It is my goal to design a house for each of them that is a true representation of their personality and lifestyle.”

Tips Always include an antique or two in every room. The mix of old and new is what keeps a room interesting and unique. Be realistic about your lifestyle and how you truly live. Design a house for who you are and not who you want to be. Be mindful of trends. Karl Lagerfeld once said, “Trendy is the last stage before tacky.”

Who says bold can’t be elegant? The formal living room’s neutral-toned semi-circular sofas complement the unusual-shaped space while pops of hot pink and turquoise in both bold, floral prints and solids kick up the drama. A marble-top tassel table with turquoise ottomans offer transitional seating as well as a place to play and enjoy company.

hen Leigh Goodwyn and her family moved to their new home on Eastover Road, the decision to call on Holly Hollingsworth Phillips, interior designer and co-owner of The English Room, for a comprehensive home design was a no-brainer. After all, Phillips had already successfully decorated two of her homes, expertly marrying Phillips’ design style with Goodwyn’s vision for her family. As a designer and entrepreneur herself, and half of the duo behind dorm room couture experts LeighDeux, Goodwyn had specific desires for her new home—desires she knew Phillips would take into account when constructing the design plan. “Holly made the process a collaborative experience, even allowing me to go along with her to design centers to select pieces for the home. She listened to what we wanted as a family and gave me the opportunity to be an active participant in the finished product,” Goodwyn says. Known for her elegant design punctuated with eclectic pieces and punches of color, Phillips was the perfect match for Goodwyn’s vision. “Leigh’s previous home in Charlotte was more

traditional, a little more conservative and darker,” Phillips says. “The goal here was to design a home that felt lighter, cleaner, fresher, and brighter. We really wanted to take the traditional up a notch, mixing antiques with fresh patterns and colors to give it a contemporary twist.” The home, designed and built by Don Duffy Architecture and Whitlock Builders respectively, features white walls and darkstained hardwood floors throughout the majority of the home, creating not only a blank canvas of sorts but also imparting a clean, airy backdrop that allows spaces to flow seamlessly into each other. The home’s ample natural light enhances this open quality, available through oversized windows and glasspaned French doors. For a dash of drama, punches of vibrant color and layers of coordinating bold textiles flood the space with fun, contemporary flourishes that not only give the design a modern edge but also welcomes visitors like a friendly hug. It’s that happy hospitality that truly embodies the Goodwyns’ lifestyle. Focusing on family time as well as entertaining guests, it was imperative that the design represent a space that could be “lived in” yet elegant enough to host get-togethers and events. “I didn’t want a monochromatic show house,” Goodwyn says.

Bottom: The artful staircase runner grabs visitors’ interest and embodies the total home design built around contemporary twists on traditional style with an edge that is uniquely suited to the Goodwyns’ personality.

“I wanted a multi-functional space that could go from being a comfortable place to relax with family to a beautiful backdrop in which to entertain.” Upon walking into the home, guests are immediately wowed by the foyer’s crisp white walls, accented with unexpected dramatic elements, including the staircase’s artful runner, which imparts a bit of whimsy into the space, along with the settee’s metallic-printed linen throw pillows, gallery wall, and striking dome chair by Noir Furniture. “We needed something a bit outlandish to fill that negative space in the entry and create immediate interest,” Phillips says. The formal dining room’s Venetian-inspired chandelier is another statement piece that anchors the room’s design. Its tubular glass bead construction, reminiscent of feathers, along with the room’s metallic grasscloth and accents of corals and blues, perfectly complement the antique sideboard and more traditional dining room table. Ample seating in the living room, including matching semi-circular sofas, a punchy hot pink accent bench, side chair in a coordinating bold floral print, and tassel-style game table promises guests an abundance of opportunities to sit, relax, and chat. For entertaining or family time al fresco, the bluestone patio, complete with covered fireplace and television, offers distinct serving, seating, and dining areas perfect for any event or a night relaxing at home. Having comfortable family-centric areas in the home was one of Goodwyn’s main requests, and nowhere is this highlighted more than in the kitchen, which has become the hub of the home. “The kitchen area is truly where this family lives,” Phillips says. “They can work on college applications and essays while dinner’s cooking, spending time all in one space as a family.” Appliance corrals, crisp white cabinetry, and the simple elegance of the Carrara marble countertops give the kitchen sleek, uncluttered lines, while layers of vibrant, printed fabrics give the sitting and breakfast areas a fresh kick of color. A custom silver metallic vinyl double bench and barstools at the kitchen island ensure everyone has a place to hang out. conversation, relaxing with a book, or watching some TV. Goodwyn’s love (and heritage) in textiles is clearly portrayed through the room’s multi-layered patterns and textures that each breathes a sophisticated comfort into the space. Throughout the home, Phillips’ design is not afraid to mix things up, evidenced in the gold and silver mixed metals throughout, the brilliant repurposing of Goodwyn’s existing pieces in the new motif, and the revitalization of antiques with contemporary fabrics and accessories. And yes, there’s even a little co-mingling on designers. While Phillips designed and implemented the decor in the majority of the home, Goodwyn was inspired to throw in a little of LeighDeux’s product lines in two of her upstairs bedrooms. The guest bedroom features bedding and coordinating pillows and throws from LeighDeux’s soft and sophisticated Cynthia Sky line, which blends light blue and linen in a Moroccan-inspired design. MidCentury Modern Glam A team of architects, builders, designers, and modern cabinetmakers join forces to transform a mid-century modern diamond in the rough into a stunning home, creating Charlotte’s first Mod Designer Showcase Home. By Nancy Atkinson Photography by Dustin Peck

L

ast year, Tony Battah, owner of Hans Krug Fine European Cabinetry in Charlotte, sponsored his first Mad About Modern Home Tour. This year, he took his passion for preserving mid-century modern design to the next level when he became personally involved in Charlotte’s first Mod Designer Showcase Home. Battah was drawn to the home on Lansing Drive because of its mid-century bones. “Unfortunately, it was in bad shape,” he says. “I knew it was in danger of being leveled for a new home – one with much less character – to be built in its place. I didn’t want our community to lose another mid-century modern jewel.” He purchased the home and began remodeling it with the distinctive cabinetry from his store, Hans Krug. Around the same time, the Charlotte Museum of History’s Mad About Modern Board of Directors was searching for a home for its Mod Designer Showcase. Battah’s house was the perfect fit. The architects from Liquid Design had already provided the plans for the home, and Dennis Pumneo of Pumneo Builders, a contractor passionate about mid-century home restoration, was overseeing its renovation. Having worked with Pumneo on many projects over the years, Battah knew he was the right builder to enhance the clean, modern lines of the home’s mid-century past while giving it a more open, livable design for today’s homeowner. “To be great at this type of work, you have to not only have a vision for the house itself, but also for what is going on inside the home,” Pumneo says. “True midcentury modern was all about the colors, furniture, and details of the home. I think the thing that sets me apart from others doing mid-century, is that I understand the finishes and I listen to how people want to live in their homes.” Pumneo describes the home as a typical ‘60s ranch with good lines. The home needed curb appeal, and its main living areas needed to become more open for entertaining. A new front door and sidewalk were added to the home’s exterior. Cedar details completed the front gable and gave it a warmer appearance from the street, while reducing the brick on the facade. The home’s old kitchen and laundry room were very compartmentalized, true to mid-‘60s style. To bring them up to date, Pumneo opened up the main living spaces to create a large area for entertaining. Modern cabinetry by Hans Krug was added to each of the other rooms to complete the updated look.

“We used the very best materials,” Battah says. “Having access to everything we do at Hans Krug made the renovation process easier and gave the home a true feeling of modern luxury.” “To pull off a great project you must have a great team of people, including homeowners,” Pumneo says. “We had a great group of designers who pulled it together and supported each other’s ideas and truly made it fun. You don’t often work with

three different designers on a project, but things were seamless.” The entire showcase home highlights the contributions each designer made – the essential architectural and design elements that make the home a success. Sarah Catherine Garvin Sarah Catherine Collective Sarah Catherine Garvin, the lead designer, was also responsible for the collaborative design effort. She brings more than fifteen years of interior design experience and a globallyinspired perspective to her work. Her high-end studio, Sarah Catherine Collective (SCCo) has designed more than sixty homes. Ashley DeLapp of Ashley DeLapp Interior Design and Monika Nessbach with designbar were also on the design team. Ashley DeLapp’s studio is a full-service interior design firm based in SouthEnd, while designbar, also a full-service firm, focuses on hospitality, corporate, retail, and multifamily design projects. Garvin and the team began their work from the studs. Hans Krug had already designed the kitchen and selected cabinetry for the home. Garvin finalized their decisions and drew inspiration from their selections. The chartreuse color in the pantry cabinets became her jumping off point, as she weaved the electric color throughout the home, beginning with the home’s vibrant front door. A dramatic accent wall from Hans Krug in Tribal Makassar matte veneer divides the formal living area from the rest of the home. In this space, which seemed geared for the mid-century modern lifestyle of entertaining, Garvin envisioned an art gallery feel and used sculptural architectural elements to enhance the mood. “It had a cool vibe and lent itself to a curved sofa that welcomes you and wraps its arms around you as you walk in,” she says.

Her artistic eye also targeted the back corner of the home, where she felt a huge focal point was needed. Sarah Catherine Collective created the custom channel tufted banquette to define the space. The kitchen features a Tribal Makassar island, Hans Krug Safari Glass countertops, and Italian leather stools. In the living space, Garvin created a warm, casual area for the family to relax, installing another custom-made curved sofa to complement the curves of the room’s fireplace, along with custom swivel chairs to flank a burl wood coffee table, giving a nod to midcentury modern style. Her choice of bouclé fabric for the chairs accented by gold and rust pillows creates a warm, energetic vibe throughout the home. Garvin also designed the guest bath, drawing inspiration from the mint green cabinetry by Hans Krug. She used porcelain tile with a subtle geometric digital pattern and classic penny rounds for the backsplash. A vintage Curtis Jere brass table lamp in the living room and vintage Turkish rugs from Fos Restoration Company were among some antique pieces used. “It’s always nice to put a piece of history in your home,” Garvin explains, who says she doesn’t gravitate toward any one style but likes an elegant, effortless mix. “There’s a certain feeling you get from vintage pieces; it’s an underlying vibrancy that pulsates through the room.”

complementing the Oak Champak closet by Hans Krug. “Mid-century modern is my favorite design style, so I was really excited when Sarah and Tony approached us for this collaboration,” Nessbach says. “Our inspiration started with the

idea of incorporating a focal wall with geometric patterns and built-ins, which was so indicative for this era. We then elevated the design to the 21st century by incorporating LED accent lighting and modern furniture pieces with classic roots.”

October / November 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 69

Ashley DeLapp Evaru Ashley DeLapp also likes to throw a little vintage into the mix, using vintage lamps and nightstands in the master bedroom she designed. “I always incorporate vintage pieces into my designs,” DeLapp says. “They give character when used alongside new items and I love how they make a room unique.” DeLapp drew her inspiration from the shag rug with its muted palette of blues, purples, and blush. Bold color is DeLapp’s trademark, so she chose grasscloth by Phillip Jeffries in vivid purple to accent the wall behind the bed. Artwork and pillows by local artist Windy O’Connor pair nicely with the patterns and textures DeLapp chose to accent a Hans Krug Walnut Corte laminate closet. The modern brass chandelier from Illuminate

Vintage adds a final crowning touch. The home has been such a success and the team’s collaboration worked so well; Battah says he is eager to tackle another mid-century remodel. “We know there is a renewed appreciation for the unique design qualities of mid-century modern homes, and these homes are in danger of being torn down,” Battah says. “We are working to preserve these neighborhoods that make Charlotte unique by finding and restoring as many of these homes as we can. Our team has a vision for modern design that celebrates mid-century modernism and also works for the way we live today.”u

Livable Caroline Brackett designed a Myers Park home that manages to be clutter-free and kid-friendly. By Page Leggett Photograhy by Dustin Peck

C

an a home be both pristine and conducive to letting kids be kids? Designer Caroline Brackett proves the nearly impossible to be possible in the Myers Park home she designed for a family of four. The homeowners, both in the healthcare field, have two children and a dog. And they love to entertain. They hired Brackett to give their newly constructed, 4,500-square-foot home a “young, fresh, and comfortable” feel. “The homeowners have quite a flair and are very stylish, and I wanted their home to reflect that,” Brackett says. “They wanted it to be current and beautiful, livable, and family-friendly.” Brackett chose durable fabrics for the family areas, like indoor/outdoor fabric in the kitchen, where messes are likely to happen. The ottoman in the den is easily wiped clean. “This was a new home, but they weren’t part of the building process,” Brackett explains. “The house has a great foundation of finishes and materials, so it was easy to build on those.” Brackett’s practical strategy: Decorate the main rooms at one time and complete those spaces down to the accessories before moving on to other parts of the home. It’s true that the entire house has a “wow” factor, but certain rooms really pack a visual punch. “I especially love the den with the U-shaped sectional. It is truly somewhere you want to curl up and relax,” Brackett says. “The dark, saturated color on the walls and trim adds to that coziness.”

The print rug is by Bellbridge and the soothing wall color is Benjamin Moore “Northern Cliffs”. 74 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | October / November 2017

Indeed, it feels cocoon-like. The sectional is a dark, textured linen, and the metallic, vinyl cocktail ottoman is large enough for anyone to rest their feet on from any place on the sectional. The room’s palette is so dramatic that little else is needed. The only artwork in the room is a wall-sized map of Paris from the 1960 World’s Fair (the wife’s grandmother was French) and a pair of the son’s prized antlers. The son has made the room his own. His “lair” is where he spends much of his free time reading or watching TV. But dark isn’t the palette for the entire house. Clean, light, and airy are a few ways you could describe the home. Creams, pale taupes, and cool whites are the perfect backdrop for occasional pops of color like the persimmon dining room chair fabric. Not everything in the new house is new either. The homeowners recovered their existing bed in a peacock-colored velvet. “It really stands out against the white shiplap walls,” Brackett says. “It’s an interesting palette of pale lavender, grey, cream, and aqua. And it is a serene, soft respite.” “The homeowners inherited several pieces from the wife’s grandmother, who seems to be the most chic, eclectic woman,” Brackett says. “Everything she had passed down to them we tried to use. The coral base on the dining table was hers, as was the pink glass geisha stationed at the end of a hallway on an acrylic stand.” An impressive collection of Lalique crystal was also passed down from the grandmother, who was a decorator in the Washington, D.C. area. Two reproduction Barcelona chairs are in the living room. Paintings from the grandmother’s art collection hang in the dining room and master bedroom, and the dining chairs are also hers. “My grandmother used to tell me that if something is beautiful and worth having, it will find a place in your home,” the homeowner says. “I believe her.” “The home is a wonderful reflection of the family’s lifestyle, heritage, and personalities,” Brackett says. October / November 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 75

And most importantly, the homeowners agree. “Decorating can be expensive, and Caroline was able to quickly identify and prioritize where to use my budget,” the wife says. “As a working mother, I wanted to avoid anything overly fussy or requiring special care. It was remarkable to me how easily she was able to judge my tastes and needs.” The home proves that refined doesn’t have to mean stuffy. And comfortable doesn’t have to mean entirely casual.u

Top Left: Set against shiplap walls, the pink glass geisha and acrylic stand, both of which are heirloom pieces handed down from Juliette Lane’s grandmother, is the hallway showstopper. The runner is a vintage rug. The walls are painted in Benjamin Moore “Rodeo”. Top Right: Sherwin Williams “Aloof Gray” provides a soothing backdrop for this spa-like master bath with hardware from Ballard Designs and window treatments by Larsen. Bottom: A calming oasis, the muted master bedroom gets a jolt of color from the headboard, which is upholstered in Pindler fabric. Color Trends It’s going to be a yin and yang year…

By Dana W. Todd

ccording to Sherwin-Williams, the 2018 color forecast is turning out to be a bit like the Chinese philosophical concept of yin and yang – a little bit of dark and an equal measure of light, but all the colors work together. The two ends of the spectrum will be represented in residential design next year, according to Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams director of color marketing, and her team of color designers and researchers.

Layered neutrals, long a staple in residential decor for their soothing effect, are being challenged by an increased interest in deep, bold hues that can be dashing and romantic in the right spaces. “Scandinavian design will continue to influence color choices as people are drawn toward layering neutrals to create calm, soothing palettes,” Wadden says. “At the same time, people are now seeking deep and rich hues as an interesting, romantic contrast to all of the light.”

80 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | October / November 2017

Carriage Doors: Elevate Your Curb Appeal By Dana W. Todd

84 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | October / November 2017

N

o longer simply a utilitarian part of the house, garage doors have recently taken center stage in home design and renovation projects. As an emphasis on curb appeal grows, homeowners have turned their attention to designing garage doors that match the beauty of their home’s elevation. Phil Cox, co-owner of Cox Door Company alongside his sister Pam Betts, recognizes this growing trend of builders and homeowners installing wooden carriage style doors on their garages. Cox Door has been customizing and installing wood carriage doors for many years – most notably for the two Street of Dreams houses in Charlotte and a Southern Living Idea House, both of which garnered the company nationwide requests from those wanting to replicate the high-end look. From chateauesque to Craftsman style, carriage doors capture the historical charm of various periods while using upscale materials, such as paint-grade cypress, knotty red cedar, redwood, red oak, African or Honduran mahogany, and even reclaimed vintage wood. The architectural options are limitless, according to Cox. He can specify a cove molding on a carriage garage door, for example, that matches what the architect designs in the house’s interior. There are several major suppliers of custom carriage doors, but Cox is proud that his small, independent family-owned company can specify the right carriage door for his customers regardless of manufacturer. Many who want the carriage house look but are interested in a lower maintenance product can rely on manufacturers such as Clopay to

provide wood composite overlay wrapped around a steel door. “We have been at the forefront of perfecting the custom carriage house look for many years. As an independent company, we can buy from whichever supplier best achieves a homeowner’s particular vision,” Cox says. As a value-added service, Cox Doors reviews architectural drawings and modifies engineering specifications if necessary to move homeowners’ visions of carriage doors from concept to feasibility. “We also are able to make recommendations to lower the costs of garage door designs so architects can make the most informed decisions for their clients,” Cox says. “Our high-end clients expect perfection, so we really focus on creative ways to give them the looks they are after.” Cox Door representatives can also make stain suggestions and smart home technology recommendations based on many years of experience. “Not sure if you closed your garage door before leaving for a trip? We can enable you to check and close the door from a smart phone app while you’re lounging in Europe,” Cox says. The details are important to the Cox family, which is why this year marks their 30th anniversary in Charlotte. They’re looking forward to continuing to delight customers with their attention to detail, dedication to time spent with the client, and commitment to customer satisfaction.u Want to upgrade the look of your home with wooden carriage house garage doors? rande Custom Builders’ founder, John Jackovich, is not interested in playing it safe when it comes to designing luxury homes. “We are focused on trying new things that aren’t the usual in the Charlotte marketplace,” he says. “We want homebuyers to experience an emotional response to our homes.” Jackovich’s edgy style is evidenced in the latest Grande Custom home designed by architect Jim Phelps and

built in the prestigious Eastover neighborhood, a modern Spanish-style home that spares no details. Its clean lines belie the complexity of its worldly details, where old and new are layered effortlessly. Reclaimed Egyptian doors provide a focal point in the living room. A grid-like window wall takes the extra-large kitchen to a modern place, while icebox latches on custom cabinetry keep to a more traditional style. Handmade Moroccan tiles highlight the wall surrounding three ceiling-to-countertop windows in the kitchen, the kitchen backsplash, and risers on the grand staircase leading to the second floor. A neutral color palette lets the focus stay on the architectural details, according to Jenna Jackovich, founder of home staging company StyleFIX, who styled this modern home. “The layering of warm and cool neutrals gives the house dimension and creates a more interesting color palette. Antique brass and polished nickel finishes live in harmony throughout the space,” she says. Highlighted interior architectural details, like skylights in the main living areas, keep the rooms bright. In fact, the house is architecturally designed so that lighting isn’t needed during the daytime hours. “We wanted the rooms drenched in sun because light plays an important role in how we feel and live,” Jenna says. Not only does the house look modern; it lives modern. The entire home is pre-wired to be an interactive Savant Pro smart home. The pool, spa, shades, thermostat, lighting, entertainment systems, garage doors, electronic gate, and more can be controlled via a smart phone app. The exterior features as many exciting amenities as the interior, including low-maintenance materials that are practical, yet beautiful. An authentic clay tile roof evokes Spanish style while eliminating the need for future upkeep. Cedar trim details and easy maintenance landscaping limit homeowner

involvement. Metal windows and doors eliminate the customary problems of wood warping and decay, with the added bonus of clean lines that complement modern design. A HERS energy efficiency index score between thirty and forty means this modern Spanish house is about seventy percent more energy efficient than a standard new home. At more than 6,100 square feet, five bedrooms, five full baths, two half baths, and a basement, the house is large enough for luxurious living. Outdoor living spaces expand the footprint even farther, with a large pool for relaxing or lap swimming, featuring three waterfalls and a separate heated infinity whirlpool. Two covered porches and a brick retaining wall and privacy wall continue the retreat-like feel. “The sheer descents allow you to drown yourself in the ‘music of water,’” John says. u Interested in this modern Spanish house or ready for Grande Custom Builders (GCB) to build your luxury home? Casual COMFORT by Dawn Harris

F

inding a gifted and discerning designer who “gets” you can be one of the most satisfying aspects of decorating your home. It can give you the confidence you need to push your creative envelope. It can be the difference between a good experience and a great one. Just ask Cindy Moeller. Before retiring and settling into a condo in Charlotte, Moeller sold high-end office furniture for thirty years, so she was no stranger to the design process. Moeller says she was ready for a fresh start and in the market for all new furniture — classic, quality pieces for her “forever home.” One day, she happened into our Design Center in Pineville, where she promptly fell for the Audrey sofa. Designer David Prosser appeared, and both agree there was an instant connection. “Some clients are all business, but not Cindy,” Prosser says. She opened up to him about her hopes for her home, and as he says, they just clicked. Prosser is an award-winning designer who has been with Ethan Allen for seventeen years, during which he has polished and honed his listening skills. When he saw Moeller’s condo during a home call, he says he fully understood what she was after: casual comfort and a transitional, mostly neutral look. He knew that scale would be very important (luckily the Audrey sofa that won Moeller’s heart wasn’t too deep), and that a treasured painting would figure prominently in the design plan.

They talked budget, Prosser made a formal presentation, and Moeller was satisfied that every purchase would be worth the money. “I’ve always believed if you buy cheap, you buy twice,” she says. On the spot, she decided that Prosser would help her furnish all three rooms of the condo at once. The result is a comfortable space with a few rustic touches, a style very much in keeping with Prosser’s work. “Cindy has simple tastes, and I’m not an overly fussy designer,” he says. “I don’t think it’s necessary to ‘over-wow’ a customer.” The inspiration piece, a colorful cityscape, hangs in the dining area of the open living space. Prosser picked up its secondary colors in the accent pillows. To make the space feel less formal, he switched out a chandelier with an industrial-style pendant. He also transformed Moeller’s master bedroom into a sanctuary and created a comfortable but hardworking guest room, as she has young grandchildren. “David really met my needs,” she says. “He thought through everything, and trust me: I’m picky!” From the very beginning, Moeller says she could tell that Prosser’s heart is in his work. “He looked the part, acted the part. He spent time with me and made me feel important. From the moment I saw him, I knew he was ‘the one.’”u Stop in and meet the design team. It’s their job to help you design the home of your dreams—doing as little or as much as you like. And remember: Their services are always free. For inspiration and ideas, visit www.ethanallen.com or visit the Charlotte Design Center at 11516 Carolina Place Parkway in Pineville, 704-341-7512.

Large in Small Spaces

When Square Footage Goes Slim, Functional Style Goes Big. By Brandy Woods Snow

single professional establishing a first residence, empty nesters with too much room in their current home, or those simply looking to downsize — there are times in everyone’s life when a smaller living space is ideal. But just because the square footage is slim, doesn’t mean the style should be. Karen Dixon, owner of Front Door Fabrics and Interiors, has assisted many homeowners in transition and knows what it takes to make smaller spaces strike a balance with the highest standards of style and function. “My motto is ‘Decorate to bless, not impress,’” Dixon suggests. “Your home is a direct welcome message to your guests, and you should make them feel comfortable and blessed to be there.” Small spaces are often marketed as “cozy,” but that’s not to be mistaken with cramped – at least not for homeowners who thoughtfully consider how a downsized space can be a boon to their lifestyle rather than a hurdle to overcome. Dixon says the secret to designing the perfect small space is to be frank with yourself about your goals for the home, as well as how those goals are best achieved. With Dixon’s

afraid to go for a brighter pop of color in less intrusive and more defined spaces, such as laundry rooms, powder rooms, and limited kitchen walls.

expertise, homeowners can discover that “spacious” is in the eye of the beholder. Keep Your Furniture to Scale The 96-inch sofa with large rolled arms from your previous home will most likely overpower the limited living space. Instead, opting for a smaller piece with a sleek, low profile will seamlessly integrate into room proportions. In the bedroom, don’t be afraid to break up that suite or mix it up with eclectic pieces that coordinate. Better yet, consider hiring a professional closet organizer to maximize your storage space and toss out that old chest. Choose Multi-Functional Pieces In small spaces, furniture pieces and accents that pull double (or even triple) duty are paramount. Try using a chest of drawers as a side table or an ottoman in place of a coffee table (bonus points if it has hidden storage). Small ottomans that can be stashed under side tables offer additional seating but require no precious square footage when sidelined. Flat panel TVs have eliminated the need for cumbersome entertainment centers, but go a step further and conceal the black screen with a moveable art piece. Consider stashing a couple of bamboo folding chairs in a hall closet for extra seating when needed.

Lighting and Accessories Set the Mood For shorter ceiling heights, stylish flush mount fixtures are best. As well, recessed lighting is another terrific option. If neither suits your fancy, strategically-placed lamps can offer the same quality lighting. As for accessories, use rugs to define spaces in joint living/dining floor plans, and don’t be afraid to accessorize with memorabilia collected through travels or experiences. Make it personal. Breaking Up is Hard to Do…But It’s a Must! Ask yourself the hard question: Do I really need all this stuff or is it purely sentimental? If the latter, take a picture, save it on digital media, and let it go. “It’s not a depressing thing,” Dixon says. “There’s something very freeing about it.”u If you need help to start living large in your small space, visit Front Door Fabrics and Interiors at 9517 Monroe Rd, Suite D, Charlotte, call 704-844-6330, or visit www. frontdoorfabrics.com.

Color Coordination Adds Continuity and Pop Open concept designs, common in small spaces, leave no defined “stopping places” between areas, so keeping the walls a streamlined, neutral palette offers continuity. Warm greige colors in the main living spaces and spa blues in the bedroom flow seamlessly off one another. One caveat — don’t be October / November 2017 | Home Design & DecoR Charlotte 99

n case you haven’t noticed, the “boho chic” of bohemian style is everywhere in fashion and interior design. We saw the revival of unfettered lines in the mid-century modern aesthetic of the ‘60s and ‘70s, so it’s only fitting that the carefree spirit of the bohemian lifestyle now joins the party. This look draws inspiration from the world traveler. By combining East and West, vintage with modern, it displays an eclectic and cultivated blend of patterns and textures. A relaxed style, it’s punctuated by fringed throw pillows and macramé works, potted plants, and a hint of the Orient. The result can impart the feeling of an everlasting vacation – a bit rumpled and very, very at ease. The chic comes in with a simple backdrop upon which the layers of texture can pop, while a curated collection of accessories dials down the rumple and ups the style. This bohemian project was right in my wheelhouse stylistically and also played to my everlasting love of black and white. My young client wanted a little boho chic and I

Mixing furniture styles makes the room feel collected, a hallmark of the bohemian style. wanted to keep the colors to a minimum. The rug and pillows were my starting point, both very textural and both handcreated with strong patterns. Keeping the walls bright and white combined with a simple bed and simple curtains allow those strong pieces to stand on their own. The texture is amped up when you throw in bamboo blinds and woven sconces. Mixing furniture styles makes the room feel collected, a hallmark of the bohemian style. A little vintage side chest with a tall graphic bookcase and a low upholstered platform bed complete the comfortable look. Most boho chic looks infuse lots of colors that are often mismatched for effect. This is a great way to have fun with collecting pillows and art – the more the better, so have at it!u

reat things are happening at New Old, and we couldn’t be more excited to share them with Charlotte Home Design & Decor readers! As a company, we have always sought to thoughtfully balance our dual core values of preserving the past and innovating for the future. Now, we are thrilled to be experiencing a series of “firsts” that honor the history and traditions we cherish in new and exciting ways. We are immensely proud and excited to unveil The Bramble, New Old’s first planned community of homes. This project certainly represents a milestone for us as a company. But what makes it truly special is the fact that this will be Charlotte’s very first Southern Living Inspired Community. We are passionate about Southern Living Inspired Communities for so many reasons. First, they are always beautiful, timeless, and preserve the unique character of their surroundings. Second, they exemplify charm, grace, warmth, tradition, hospitality, and community – all of the very best things about life in the South. Third, they are the epitome of taste, elegance, and refinement. And last, but certainly not least, Southern Living Inspired Communities are committed to “preserving the long-favored lifestyle of our region

with some of the best ideas in urban planning, architecture, landscape design, and recreation.” These principles and values speak to who we are as builders, which is why we were incredibly honored and delighted that The Bramble was hand-selected by Southern Living editors. They also speak to who Charlotte is as a community, which is why we are so excited to be the ones to introduce this concept here. We designed The Bramble to be an intimate neighborhood of luxury homes, where people can quietly enjoy their families, their neighbors, and their lives, in a serene wooded setting, amid charming streets lined with copper lanterns. Farmhouse, Craftsman, traditional, and European styles inspire the homes’ designs, and each is gracious, welcoming, and bright— just as a Southern Living Inspired home should be. We also designed each home to reflect an exquisite sense of taste. We used the highest level of craftsmanship and the finest

materials, and we made sure that each home had innumerable custom details that made it truly unique. Our goal was to provide elevated living in a way that was genteel, refined, and understated – not showy or ostentatious. In essence, luxury you can sense rather than see. You might say it’s our interpretation of the best of traditional Southern values. We are delighted to now see our labor of love come to fruition. We are even more delighted to share it with the Charlotte community. We know it has opened up a new world of possibility for us, and we hope it opens the door to many more Southern Living Inspired Communities for Charlotte in the future.u Mary Ludemann is the founder of New Old and has been designing and building homes for over 12 years. A Remodeling State of Mind

A

utumn is by far my favorite season in the Queen City. This season brings an intoxicating mix of cooler weather, football, pumpkin beer, and the anticipation of impending change as the year begins to close out. The kids are back in their school routines and adjusting to all of the new experiences that come with moving up in grade school. Community festivals, school sports, and football tailgates dominate the weekends. Transition is in the air, and for many people, so is the thought of home remodeling. In our remodeling business, the start of fall also brings a frequent question at initial consultations: “Can you be finished by Christmas?” Understandably, most homeowners want their house to be complete and undisturbed during the holiday season. Their home is the place where they

108 Home Design & Decor Charlotte | October / November 2017

can enjoy some peace and order in an otherwise disorderly outside world. Not to mention, for many, the holiday season is the season of entertaining. Remodeling is disruptive and messy, and the thought of the project impacting their routines, especially around the holidays, can be stressful – even when the outcome is set to produce lasting and positive changes. Maintaining sanity during your remodeling project requires that you channel a “remodeling state of mind.” When remodeling a home, just like in life, it’s not a question of whether or not things will go precisely as we planned or expected, but instead, how we will manage our thoughts and emotions when they do not. Reflecting on her own home remodeling experience, Jennifer Kunst, a clinical psychologist, said it best in an article she wrote entitled Life is Like a Bowl of Remodeling: “Even the simplest project has its unanticipated challenges; they are not disasters. They can be seen for what

they are – just problems to be addressed. I find that this attitude works well when it comes to thinking about myself, my relationships, and my daily work as a psychologist.” I cannot and will not glamorize living in a home under construction – let’s be real. Remodeling is messy, loud, and time-consuming. It’s performed by an orchestra of human hands installing products that were fabricated by human hands. And in the same way that humans are imperfect and sometimes fail to perform how we expect them to, so too can a home remodeling experience. A “remodeling state of mind” means maintaining vision for the final outcome and working through obstacles as they arise. Just like dealing with any of life’s challenges, perspective is everything!u
