roots By Anne Marie Ashley Photography by Jim Schmid

February/March 2013 Urban Home Charlotte 15

Sometimes, you just need to return to your roots.

fter 23 years in a high-stress executive position and 17 years spent mostly away from her family, Lynda Strickland decided it was time to find her center and build a home that was a retreat. She went to architect Frank Harmon with three simple requirements for her home: It had to be dramatic, fused with nature and in a modernist style with little to no ornamentation. Three years later, Lynda finally felt that she was at home. “I built a modernist home because I love the movement and light experience of modernist spaces and materials like wood, metal, glass and stone,” explains Lynda. “Plus, it’s

16 Urban Home Charlotte February/March 2013

perfect for my family – it provides a sanctuary from the busy world and is, at once, one with nature.” Not to be confused with contemporary design, modern architecture and décor fuses the simple lines of nature with cool materials like wood, glass and stone to create lots of light, air and open spaces and, in Lynda’s case, lots of white walls. “My style is minimalist with a focus on texture, color, light and materials.” Lynda designed the interiors herself, drawing on inspiration that burgeoned within since she was a small girl. “I spent all my free time outdoors as a child,” remembers Lynda. “Following creeks, watching ant colonies, making mud pies, sewing, drawing house layouts, dreaming of Hollywood homes from the 50s and 60s. I translate all of this into a style that is the Japanese aesthetic of George Nakashima meets the form and function of BB&T Italia furniture meets Gary Lynch’s abstract

art.” Lynda directed the build team to reduce the interior spaces to the simplest form – exposed bolts, construction markings, no moldings so that she could really see how the house was put together. Rough, unfinished, laminated veneer lumber beams were positioned against sleek forms and rich fabric textures creating a space that was truly a “juxtaposition of materials,” as she puts it. Built on a dramatic slope with a running creek at the bottom, and in the middle of the woods, the house did present challenges, but none Harmon couldn’t handle. “The site was a steep, north-facing escarpment, 80 feet above Crabtree Creek and shaded by a 150-yearold forest of beech and oak trees,” says Harmon. “The creek carved this escarpment for millions of years, which immediately suggested a site of great ecological sensitivity. We knew we had to build upon it carefully.” The layout and design took a full year to flesh out and the build was done in two years. A hand-forged and fabricated steel staircase catches your eye in Lynda’s home with complementary steel walls, backsplashes and hood surrounds in the kitchen. “I think good design happens when you stay away from trends,” suggests Lynda. “Design should reflect the purpose of the space and each element should play nicely with others, but February/March 2013 Urban Home Charlotte 17

should stand on its own as well.” Practicing what she preached, the staircase has floating wooden steps suspended with steel and wood railings, creating a sort of balance in the center of the living space, while picture windows (27-feet high at the tallest point) flood the room with light. An avid art collector, Lynda also adorned her home with several beautiful and large-scale art pieces, adding layer upon layer of interest to the overall décor. When asked what her advice to homeowners would be when building a modernist home, Lynda says you need to look honestly at how you live and what you actually need. “Think seriously about how you move and live in spaces. What are your needs for privacy, sound control, lighting, etc?” Lynda also suggests making sure all of the already-installed materials are in top shape; if the carpet is dirty or worn, clean it or replace it, if hardwoods need repair, then refinish them and if walls are scuffed and need touch-ups, put a fresh coat of paint on them. “No design, no matter how magnificent, will shine in a room where the walls, ceiling or floors aren’t in top condition.”v

If Walls Could Talk

trent haston A good architect or designer knows when and where to add that special detail.

If you’ve ever endured the painful process of removing wallpaper from your walls, you’ve probably sworn it out of your life forever. While wallpaper has been scraped, scoured and peeled right out of décor for the last decade, I want to urge you to reconsider this misunderstood design element. History repeats itself, as they say, and I believe we will be seeing a lot more character on our walls in 2013. Maybe it’s just my opinion, but I have always seen wallpaper as tacky, cheap and outdated. Over the years, I have come to prefer and appreciate a more clean, crisp and monochromatic aesthetic. However, I’ve noticed many of our clients going beyond the basic painted sheetrock wall and incorporating various wall coverings in their homes instead. And I have to admit; the special pop it adds has really won me over. Today’s wallpaper has come a long way from our grandmother’s homes. You will find bold colors and patterns, some textured grass cloths and even some luxurious fabrics. The options are endless, so make a statement and don’t be afraid to use it in unconventional places. Use it in your laundry room or stairway, for example. It’s an easy way to instantly add character to drab rooms. Wallpaper is not the only upgrade you can make to your walls, however. Another old-new trend is wood paneling. Wood slats can be hung horizontally or vertically, and can be applied in either tongue-and-groove style or butted. Instead of slats, you can add constructed panels that are built-in like cabinets. Many people are using antique or reclaimed wood for a rustic feel, but new wood will give a more sleek appearance. Either way, wood adds a lot of warmth to a room, whether you do an accent wall for a little pop or the whole room for that cabin feel. Stone is another option for your walls. Depending on the look you are going for, you can use full slabs or smaller tiles with grout joints. Where wood adds warmth, stone adds grandeur and formality. Stone has been very popular in kitchen and bath applications, but take it to your foyer or formal living areas for that special wow-factor. If you are just not friends with wallpaper, can’t warm up to wood and feel cold about stone, you can always just change the paint for an updated look. A lot of people feel married to the wall colors in their homes, but remember, paint is the easiest and cheapest way to update and spice up your home. If you haven’t changed the paint colors in your home in the last decade, give it a try! Go for a textured paint, do a bold accent wall or paint a pattern. Do something different to make your home feel brand new. Whatever your style, I urge you to make 2013 the year of upgrades in your home. If your walls could talk, I think they’d thank you.v Trent Haston is CEO of Andrew Roby and has spent many years in project management, focusing on style and craftsmanship for custom home projects. Color n Trends

Move over Tangerine Tango,

By Nancy Atkinson

there’s a new color in town.

A Jewel

With Pantone’s recent declaration that Emerald Green is the color of 2013, we’ll soon be seeing the fresh jewel tone in our closets, kitchens, living rooms and even car showrooms. Most often associated with precious gemstones, Pantone calls emerald a color that is lively, radiant and lush. It is also the color of

growth, renewal and prosperity and has been chosen for centuries to represent healing and unity. “Green is the most abundant hue in nature,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “The human eye sees more green than any

Of A Color other color in the spectrum.” To arrive at their selection for Color of the Year, Pantone surveys designers in various fields to learn more about the colors they’ve been working with. By the time the Pantone announcement is made, the “it” color is already out in stores. So it’s not surprising that green showed up on the runway at New York Fashion Week in September. It was also on

display at the Fall 2012 Furniture Market in High Point, North Carolina, where furniture makers like CR Laine layered several shades of green. From jade and lemongrass to avocado and pear green, CR Laine presented playful rooms of vintage Palm Beach style and used saturated greens to create a fresh take on preppy, Ivy League style.

February/March 2013 Urban Home Charlotte 29

Surrounded by all this green, it may seem like we’ve landed in Oz. But while the prevalence of green is undeniable, an entire palette of colors will emerge this spring, from a grayed jade (think seafoam green) to a zesty lemon and a bright shade of blue. Sherwin-Williams announced their paint color of the year as Aloe, a midcentury tinged blue described as having a hint of mint and lots of moxie. Benjamin Moore has named Lemon Sorbet its top hue for 2013. And Pantone’s top color for spring 2013 is Monaco Blue, a blue with a shot of sparkle that lies somewhere between bright cobalt and sapphire blue.

If something about this palette gives you a flashback to a different time, you’re not mistaken. “It’s really a throwback to the 1980s,” says Eiseman, explaining that emerald hasn’t been this popular since Ronald Regan was president. And while last year’s Tangerine Tango was vivid and energizing, this year’s Emerald Green is more relaxed. “It is absolutely the opposite of 2012’s Color of the Year,” says Eiseman. “It’s a color of growth, renewal, healing, unity and regeneration – words we’re all so in need of at this point of history.”v

Going Green

Use this year’s color palette in your home with confidence: u Treat Emerald Green like a neutral. Pair it with tan, black, blue or even yellow. u Layer multiple hues of green together for a timeless look.

u Try Monaco Blue with bright hues of similar saturation (blues, purples and Emerald Green), citrus colors or warmer neutrals.

u Combine Aloe with natural textures, aged metals or warm wood tones. u Pair Monaco Blue with poppy red and linen or emerald for a fresh collegiate look.

Discerning interior designers have been incorporating Carpet’s products, including rugs, carpeting, wallcoverings and fabrics, into their projects worldwide for many, many years. The trend has continued, with Stark product lines popping up in top designer’s residential projects and the results showing up in broadcast, print and web media worldwide. Well-known interior designer and star of HGTV’s “Showhouse Showdown”, Corey Damen Jenkins, named Stark as one of his top go-to vendors for his design projects. He recently used Stark’s Beatrice design from the Boucle Collection in an on-air renovation project, and known for using a range of design styles – traditional, modern and transitional – Stark’s wide selections and collections fit beautifully into his designs. It’s not just Corey Damen Jenkins that recognizes the quality and versatility of Stark’s offerings; most national designers have been invested in Stark Carpet and their endless selection for over 70 years. Thankfully, all of their designs and collections are available locally, right here for Charlotte designers and homeowners. Products that have recently been used in nationally spotlighted renovations, as well as a showroom full of fabrics, rugs, wallcoverings and carpeting, can be perused at leisure in Stark’s Charlotte design center. Not only that, but local Stark experts, Tim Cohen and Drew Olsen and their sales staff, are available to help designers and homeowners choose the right textiles to pull a room together and offer advice on what trends they see popping up. “Look for color trends to showcase subtle textures in sophisticated and understated grays and neutrals,” explains Tim. “In design, geometrics still are very much in play, from big and bold to small and understated.” Tim also suggests that traditional designs in grays and neutrals will now play a transitional role, bridging the diversity of furnishing styles. Drew Olson promises to continue to bring in more and more products that suit every life style and budget in 2013. “Currently, we are offering over 30 new wool broadloom designs, which are new to the market,” he explains, “as well as hundreds of new and antique hand knotted rugs. The style ranges from contemporary to traditional and everything in between.” With the help of the local Stark Carpet team, Charlotte homeowners can now re-create and achieve the high-end room designs seen in the pages of national magazines and in the hands of national designers. All right here, in our own backyard.v For more information call 704-588-8842 or view Stark’s products online at www.starkcarpet.com or visit the Stark Carpet Design Center and Outlet at 11415 Granite Street, Suite A.

New at Stark Glitz carpet: This wilton carpet is made of wool and viscose and appears handmade, when in fact it is woven by machine. It is available in four beautifully subtle neutrals: Champagne, Milky Way, Pewter, and Sterling.

Dhurrie Collection: Bright blues come alive in geometrically designed patterns in this collection of floor coverings. The look of a summer getaway cottage, Dhurrie features cotton and wool varieties. Custom colors are available.

Jean Paul Gaultier Collection: French haute couture fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaboration with Lelievre brings fashion sense into interior design. Eight textile creations weave shades of muted and bold blues with other vibrant colors for looks as diverse as fishnets to tartan plaids.

High Cotton Home Co. and Southend Trading Company showcase different design styles and merchandise, providing a complete selection of home goods and interior design services covering all customer tastes. Does the family room need a complete overhaul? Visit one of the three stores to complete the specific look that suits your home and consult an onsite designer for advice. Check out the unique offerings at all three stores: The Furniture Connector – Still incredibly popular, The Furniture Connector is the first store Rodney and his business partner opened and carries an array of eclectic pieces in a fun and flirty environment. Anatomy of a Great Mudroom By Anne Marie Ashley

We all have one. A secret hall closet, a mysterious drawer, a garage full of clutter. A great mudroom, though, can be a Godsend for chaotic lives full of backpacks, shopping bags, coats, hats, boots and a host of other incendiary items that need a home for a short time. Here, we demystify the elusive “organized drop zone” and highlight the key items for keeping your goods at hand and looking neat.

Storage Bins

Hooks

“Lockers”

Seating

Perfect for creating spaces for each individual in the family, or for occasionally used items.

Hang coats, purses, scarves or book bags for easy access and uncluttered floors.

If you have the ability to have separate compartments, it creates a type of “locker” atmosphere where each person has their own personal space.

Sit down to put on shoes, organize shopping bags or just take a load off! Provides a drop spot for smaller items and quick use.

Drawers/ Cabinets

Rug

It’s a mudroom! A rug offers you a place to wipe your shoes, dry your feet or be a drop zone for messy or wet sneakers.

Hide away items that aren’t used as often like umbrellas, snow boots or footballs, but that still deserve a home in a high traffic area.

FOOD

design Dean & DeLuca established themselves as an icon in the gourmet food store scene in New York and quickly developed the same following when it opened its SouthPark location in Charlotte. Now, the Charlotte store is blazing the way for a new concept, fusing their globally-known avant-garde culinary trends and traditions with their impeccable wine offerings in The Dean & DeLuca Wine Room. General Manager Don Burns tells us what makes it unique. It seems there are several influences in the Wine Room menu, including French and Spanish. By what or how was the food menu inspired? Chef Andres has full creative control over the menu and he is truly bringing inventive dishes to the Wine Room using local ingredients at their freshest and as many prepared ingredients from the market store as possible. We want our customers to see the Dean & DeLuca signature through and through, but with international influence that showcases the versatility of our food. Wine is obviously an integral part to the Wine Room dining experience and the offerings in the menu. Why is it important and how is it infused into the menu? Our wine team spent a very long time choosing our list of wines. They tasted and sipped; making sure each wine was the right style, variety or compliment to our menu. Chef Andres helped choose wines that pair beautifully with the food he wanted to serve. Wine can elevate a meal, and a meal can truly elevate a wine too. They go hand in hand. How is the Dean & Deluca market experience and Dean & DeLuca philosophy fused with the n ew restaurant? You mean aside from them being under the same roof (smiling)? The market cheeses, pastries, breads and charcuterie are all used in our dishes, showing just what can be done with what we offer customers. The Dean & DeLuca philosophy has been and will always be sharing the finest quality food and wine with our customers. While the Wine Room is a new concept for the franchise, giving customers a unique experience of fine foods and wines together is not. It’s Dean & DeLuca taken to the next level. What’s the most important component of creating a dining experience that keeps people coming back? That’s simple – service and atmosphere; both of which are impeccable in the wine room. We offer a casual, upscale atmosphere that makes people feel comfortable but sophisticated. A great combination. What is your favorite dish offered at the Wine Room and why? Admittedly, I have two favorites. Our lobster sliders are decadent, but not over the top and truly delicious. I’m also a red-meat lover and our filet is one of the best in Charlotte. Succulent, tender and perfectly cooked by Chef Andres. I wouldn’t steer you wrong! 44 Urban Home Charlotte February/March 2013

child’s play By Nancy Atkinson

With so many toys, clothes, books and accessories, children’s rooms can often become a war zone while fighting the battle to clean up and get organized. You have to start somewhere, so we asked Certified Professional Organizer, Laurie Martin and Associate ASID Interior Designer, Traci Zeller for tips on overcoming the clutter. Read on for peaceful, organized solutions to ending the battle of the bulge in your child’s room.

Teach Organization As A Life Skill To help your child (and you) enjoy the benefits of having an organized room, Laurie and Traci say it is essential to involve your child in the process. “Resist the urge to purge your child’s bedroom when they are not present and consult with them on a system that makes sense to them,” says Laurie. To eliminate stress and potential arguments, you may want to hire a professional organizer to assist you. Room To Grow One of the biggest challenges in creating an organizational system for children’s rooms is that their needs change as they grow – quickly! “Hobbies, habits, and sizes change frequently,” says Laurie. She recommends customizing a system to fit the needs of each child or teen, tweaking them once or twice a year. “Before the holidays and at the end of the school year are great times to purge and de-clutter.” Traci likes flexible storage solutions. “If you are investing in a custom closet or quality furniture, look for adjustable shelves and the ability to accommodate a variety of basket or box sizes so you can change the layout of the closet or furniture piece as the child’s needs change.”

Apartment Therapy

The Right Tools What are the organizational experts favorite tools? For Traci it’s boxes, baskets and bins, especially when paired with a shelving unit. “It’s easy cleanup for children when they can put all their dolls into an open basket and then stash that basket on a shelf,” she says. “I also appreciate how neat they can look when they are all lined up.” Laurie likes clear containers. “Containers help define the category and allow children to see exactly what they have,” she says. “Labeling the containers makes it easier for children to put things back where they belong!” Traci sums up the point of helping your child organize by saying, “More time and less frustration leads to happier moments and a better quality of life.”v

Vintage Posters A B uying G uide By Anne Marie Ashley

Vintage posters can add a certain Old World charm and sophistication to décor, but if you’re serious about finding a rare piece, what validates a true vintage find? When the demand for vintage posters gained momentum in the late 1970s, most of the attention was on the Belle Époque period of French peace and prosperity, including French artist Toulouse-Lautrec’s depictions of the famous Moulin Rouge and Jules Charet’s advertising posters. As the market matured, it also broadened, with collectors seeking rare travel, Olympics, transportation and World’s Fair posters, some paying upwards of $200,000 for a piece of artwork capturing an era in time. With prices rising steadily each decade, new specialty categories have risen including German, Dutch and Italian posters along with propaganda and war related artwork. Today, buyers can find nearly every period and style imaginable, all with quality artwork, ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. There are several factors in determining a vintage find, making it a collector’s item. In the end though, as is true for most design, the taste for what’s vintage and valuable is entirely subjective. v

Estimating Vintage Value Printing Method Most fine art posters from the 1880s1930s used the difficult printing process of Stone Lithography, whereby the color and artwork is fixed onto a porous stone and then transferred to the paper. The vibrancy and texture of the print is hard to reproduce and therefore, highly valuable. Rarity Rarity can be difficult to determine, as typically nobody knows how many were printed, let alone still exist. Posters were usually produced in runs of 250 to 3000 and those that were posted normally did not survive. The remains, then, will be artists’ collections, collector’s posters or leftovers from a printing warehouse.

Originality The poster and design must have been part of an original run done by the artist of the time. Condition If the poster is rare, it may be highly valued, even in poor condition. Ratings for collectors go from A-D and the rating can mean a difference of thousands of dollars. Subject Subject interests vary with the times, for example the popularity of cigar posters in the late 90s. However, perennial favorites include ocean liners, automobiles and skiing pieces.

BETH KEIM

I love a “wow factor” focal point when you enter a room.

My client, Maureen Baudhuin, presented me with a challenge: How can we add storage and style to her teenage daughter ‘s 12 x 12 room, who loves all-things fashion? Her daughter Kimmy had shoes, purses, clothes, make-up and jewelry to store, but a closet too small to hold it all. The room had plenty of space for storage up high but not at arms length, where she needed it. Plus, the twin bed had to go — I was determined to give this tall, 16-yearold girl a queen-sized bed. So, where to start? I love a “wow factor” focal point when you enter a room. A look that immediately grabs you and pulls you in. This room has a beautiful large picture window, so I wanted to place the bed in the center and work the new storage design around it. With the help of my carpenter Shaun, we created seven-foot-tall cabinets to flank the bed, with plenty of shelving and four new drawers below. The cabinets connected across the top with a long wooden cornice. This creates that focal point I love and also allows space for the queen bed with room to move on all sides. I find a lot of time that window-walls are the last place in mind for storage or furniture - but when done well, it’s perfect! Opposite the window-wall we then created two

58 Urban Home Charlotte February/March 2013

more tall but shallow wall cabinets for everything glamour! Jewelry, make-up and shoes stand at attention on 16 new shelves, all inside two wallmounted cabinets. A new desk and some artwork create another focal point. With such a love of fashion, my color palette was clean black and white with a splash of color; a somewhat French-inspired look. The velvet headboard was stitched to resemble the classic Chanel bag and Christian LaCroix’s floral fabric filled the window for a pop of color. Artwork for this space was also important to me, so Mekenzie France photographed Kimmy and some of her favorite things for a sophisticated, personal grouping. This space now offers tremendous style, but also multiple storage options for Kimmy. It’s a clean and put-together space with major glamour and a little wow factor. Think outside the box when designing a space for storage, and reconsider unconventional wall space for new storage possibilities!v Beth Keim is the owner of Lucy and Company, a full-service interior design firm located at 1009 East Boulevard. Escape Fresh

By Dana W. Todd

Pool by Design’s team designed and installed a free-form freshwater pool that resembles a pond. A filter and ultraviolet light keep the water clean and fresh for swimming.

68 Urban Home Charlotte February/March 2013

Glen and Mary Stowe commemorated their wedding anniversary June 30 and they celebrated by jumping into their new backyard pool. The pool, constructed by Pool by Design, is part of a larger oasis that provides respite for the busy couple at the end of each day. “The pool project took seven weeks to complete,” says Mary Stowe. “Completion was closer to the timeline than we’ve ever experienced during a construction project and Simon [Spiers, of Pool by Design] gave us excellent advice.” The Stowes began by installing a six-foot brick fence around the entire backyard, a material in keeping with the modernized take on their Colonial Georgian house. “The bricked-in backyard gave a different feeling than I expected,” says Stowe. “I expected the enclosed space to feel smaller, but it actually took away the view of neighbors’ houses. I was worried the fence would destroy the park-like feeling, but instead it provided an oasis.” Working in tandem with landscaper The Whole Blooming Landscape, and outdoor lighting vendor S&H Sprinklers & Landscape Lighting, Pool by Design’s team designed and installed a free-form freshwater pool that resembles a pond. A filter and ultraviolet light keep the water clean and fresh for swimming. “Simon suggested we move the pool closer to our house than originally planned,” Stowe says. “He leveled the ground so we could walk right off the portico to the pool concrete and over to the water. He suggested we situate the shallow end near the door so it would feel more like a social outdoor room.” These changes created more of a true outdoor living ambiance and paved the way for natural plants to complement the hardscaping. Stowe is a gardener, so she had garden beds installed where she could transplant seedlings. “I used native plants and those I already knew how to grow,” Stowe says about the garden beds that interrupt the surrounding hardscape of French gray tiles capped with bluestone. “We incorporated unexpected tropicals like palm trees, a banana tree and a windmill palm at the pinch point in the middle of the pool.” An installed pool waterfall replicates Mother Nature’s white noise and allows the family to enjoy it from inside when the doors are open during warmer weather. The pool blends with the home’s architecture and another outdoor living area that contains a two-sided chimney with an English flue, kitchen, grill, smoker and showerheads. “It’s like a British Colonial,” says Stowe, about the house’s traditional architecture mixed with the tropical yard plantings. “I underestimated the positive effect the redesign would have. Just looking at it and hearing the fountain is instant tranquility.”v Now is the time of year to begin designing your own personal oasis. I’m crazy for a traditional spring garden party. The weather is defrosting, the colors are blooming, sundresses and sandals take the place of anoraks and boots, and I really feel like I can breathe again. Capitol is flush with gorgeous pops of color just waiting to meet the great outdoors. Here are some of my picks for this spring’s must-have garden-party-inspired style.

Style GUIDE

Garden

Party 1. Stella McCartney Sweatshirt and Girl. Band of Outsiders Jeans For the urban garden party, I’m crazy about Stella. Her pieces are instant classics in my closet. Always tailored with a little bit of punk. 2. Irene Nuewirth Lockets It’s the closest thing to putting your sweethearts in your pocket. These are so special...like little jeweled jellybeans. 3. Sophie Anderson Mochila Clutch I can’t get through summer without my cross-body Mochilla, so I was thrilled when Sophie made these gorgeous clutches. Light, colorful and doesn’t take itself too seriously - divine!

4. Rupert Sanderson Heels Completely impractical and my favorite shoe for spring by far. I’m nuts for these! 5. Marc Jacobs Floral Dress I think Marc was surely influenced by lovely Southern women in their gardens for this collection. I’ve never seen a collection of his that looked more like home - perfection!

3

6. Diptyque Do Son Solid Perfume Smells like beach waves and tuberose. Totally dreamy. 7. Oscar De La Renta Brooch I love to pin brooches in unexpected places. I’d pin the bee high on my shoulder as if this jeweled beauty just landed on me perchance. 8. Bernardo Sandals These are the classic Bernardos that Jacqueline Onassis wore on holiday in Greece, only now in fluorescents! Perfect for pruning peonies. 9. Barbara Tfank Sundress Barbara Tfank makes the quintessential garden party dress. She uses spectacular vintage silk brocades and jacquards. Her dresses are prim, but never boring.

A Formula For

Success

By Dana W. Todd

Regardless of design trends, e3’s staff, which has more than 75 years of experience in construction and cabinetry, devised a formula for cabinetry design and installation that ensures success for homeowners’ projects.

76 Urban Home Charlotte February/March 2013

Historically, Charlotte is a traditional market when it comes to interior design, according to Carolyn Hyatt, who heads up the design department at e3 Cabinets and Design. “We’re seeing the move to a more simplistic design,” Hyatt says, “Softer colors in cabinetry, such as grays and variations of white, contribute to the simplicity.” Hyatt and her team of interior designers work with homeowners who are embarking on new construction projects, renovations of kitchens and bathrooms and room additions that include cabinetry to handle storage needs. Regardless of design trends, e3’s staff, which has more than 75 years of experience in construction and cabinetry, devised a formula for cabinetry design and installation that ensures success for homeowners’ projects. The first step of personally meeting with the homeowner results in a written list of goals for the cabinetry team to accomplish. With so many custom and pre-manufactured options available, designers can conceive and find the right cabinetry and accessories to fulfill a range of functionality and aesthetics for individual spaces. Homeowners can submit ripped out magazine pages or electronic files from sites such as houzz.com or pinterest.com that inspire them. This is also the appropriate time to provide a preliminary budget to the designer. The designer will provide feedback on what the homeowner can achieve within the allocated budget. Next, e3’s designer will work with the homeowner to choose colors. With interior designers on staff at e3, color choices are not limited to cabinetry. The team will work with homeowners to ensure all adjacent tile and paint colors will coordinate with the finished cabinetry. One of the toughest parts of a renovation project is choosing the right contractor. A benefit of working with a company like e3 Cabinets and Design however is their knowledge of the construction industry, their relationships with contractors and a staff that includes in-house licensed contractors, all working successfully with Charlotte clients. That knowledge is passed on to the homeowner, who can choose the contractor that best matches their needs from a vetted range of professionals in the Charlotte market. “If you are contemplating new construction or a remodel, e3 Cabinets & Design provides consultations to help in decision making,” says Hyatt. “We will provide all the right tools to design the dream area in your house, weather it’s a kitchen, bathroom or builtins. Our goal is to help make the thought process and project run smoothly while allowing you to enjoy it at the same time.” v Design your dream kitchen in 2013 and add storage to your home. Designer Spotlight: Lynn-Anne Bruns

by Anne Marie Ashley

WHY THE ROOM WORKS We asked Lynn-Anne Bruns of lakbdesign and Home With Heart in Charlotte to give us the rundown on one of her favorite client spaces. Here, she explains how the project came together and some of the key design elements she used to design it. “Every designer knows that it’s much easier to create a lovely living room from scratch, choosing each separate piece with a careful eye, rather than crafting a room already filled with much-loved family pieces coupled with new, designer choices. It’s easier, but the spirit of the family and a little of the room’s soul is lost when a room is filled with everything new. That’s why I enjoy using family pieces, when possible, in furnishing a living room. This living room of an Eastover family works cleverly in several ways. First, it’s a welcoming, cozy place for the family to curl up, reading, talking, and playing. Second, it’s a charming place to entertain, with prized pieces by prominent glassmaker Duncan McLellan and potter Ben Owen, among others. At the core of the room is the hearth, which features a 1965 oil painting done by the homeowner’s father; a striking piece which incorporates deep blue green, earthy tones of cream, gray, brick red, sandy brown and a delicious, Mediterranean orange. These tones pull together the otherwise disparate color elements of the room, including the sandy brown sofa and its homemade red quilt, the beautifully faded childhood trunk from my client (now serving as a coffee table), the blues and greens of a rustic ‘cloud’ garden stool and the gray sheepskin in the spaniel’s basket by the fireplace. The antique carpet and drapes reinforce the warmth and welcome

in the room, while the silvery cigar table and the mercury glass and hammered silver lamps provide a cool, modern counterpoint. At every turn, there’s a reminder of family – the father’s bronzed baby shoes are perched on top of a small stack of the mother’s Beatrix Potter books, reminding children that parents were small once too. A stash of legos is found in pottery bowls stacked in a family wagon from long ago, which now serves handily as a side table. Easily repeating elements, I brought in a weathered gray mirror from Vagabond Vintage to echo the color of the 1940s marble of the fireplace and reinforce the circle elements found in the drapery and vibrant McClellan bowl. Built-in shelves, original to the house, give each piece its own space. It’s truly special to capture and celebrate the family’s spirit using evocative things next to new, and providing a warm and welcoming living room for the family that lives there.”v
