SHOWHOUSE SHOWDOWN IT’S TIME TO OPEN THE DOORS TO SHOWCASE THE BEST OF THE BEST IN CHARLOTTE-AREA DESIGN.
W
e talked with Audrey Clawson and Starr Miller, chair and co-chair of the 2020 IDS Charlotte Designer Showhouses, about this year’s trifecta of showhouses. Three beautifully designed houses, custom-built by three well-known builders, are ready to open their doors to the public to display the work of many talented interior designers. How many years has IDS Charlotte presented this event? Miller: There have been IDS Designer Showcase Houses in the past, the most

recent in 2008, but this 2020 event is an extraordinary showhouse project that has taken two years, more than one hundred volunteers, three builders, forty-five designers, and a community of 150 sponsors and vendors to produce. This magnitude is a first for any organization. Most homes in a typical tour have one design firm that designs the entire home. Never have three luxury builders, in one neighborhood and on one cul-de-sac, teamed up with an organization to have a multitude of designers take over their homes to show the best in design. It is pure entertainment.
What was the decision process for choosing The Preserve at Narrow Passage as the neighborhood for the three houses to be built? Clawson: IDS Charlotte was seeking a unique site rooted in history and geared to the natural world. The Preserve at Narrow Passage is a new development designed by a world-renowned architect who focuses on conservation and sustainability. It is situated between the Rocky River and its West Branch, encompassing fifty-nine acres, of which thirty-seven will remain undeveloped open land. The community features walking trails that connect to Davidson’s miles of greenway that will take

custom builder), and Augusta Homes. They will unveil a vision for an eco-friendly and communityoriented development.
History comes into play, as many years ago, the East Rocky River ran in a different direction than it does today. On the southernmost parcel of the development, the East Rocky River used to curve up to a very narrow bridge on steep land. Because it was so narrow and dangerous, the locals came to call it the Narrow Passage, and it served as a meeting place. Today the site is marked by a historical plaque.

Clawson: I am over the moon about its inspiring story. It is exciting and rewarding to lead a group of individuals with a vision of giving back to the community. IDS is founded on a commitment to helping interior designers grow their businesses, develop their talents, inspire each other, and have a positive impact on their communities. This showhouse event is a tangible reflection of these goals. PHOTOGRAPHY: HOUSTON RAY.
you by foot or bike to many destinations within Davidson. Accessibility to River Run Country Club and its complete country club lifestyle is an added amenity.
What will we see in terms of design when visiting this year’s showhouses? Clawson: We can look forward to unique nature-inspired designs with a modern twist drawn from global cultures and traditions. Design styles are inspired by the past yet interpreted into new timelessly classic and streamlined features, including luxurious and comfortable furnishings, handcrafted case goods, accessories that delight and inspire, and lighting that looks like sculptured works of art. You will enjoy a wide spectrum of shapes, textural nuances, fabrics, and wallpaper from neutrals to sensationally bold patterns. Each house will be showcasing statement pieces and zippy splashes of color, all with a nod to the online world. Each showhouse has a theme that inspires its design: Modern Resort, Modern Farmhouse, and Modern Manor. We have partnered with three award-winning, high-quality builders: Plattner Custom Builders, Southern Cottage Corporation (a Southern Living
What excites you most about this year’s event? Miller: My answer is threefold. First, giving back to these incredible charities. The entire team has worked tirelessly for almost two years to make this happen, with one focus in mind—giving back to our community. Secondly, to have our stakeholders and sponsors feel the love as a result of their participation. And since collaboration is the most important element in design, it has been incredibly fun to see this heavy-weight design talent come together and make three unforgettable homes. Around every corner is another tantalizing surprise!

CARING AND SHARING ARE INTERWOVEN INTO THE 2020 IDS DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES.
T
he IDS Designer Showhouses event is all about great design, of course, but it also serves a higher purpose. The Charlotte chapter of the Interior Design Society is donating the proceeds of this year’s ticket sales to four local charities that benefit the community. Although the charities focus on fulfilling different needs, they are all working on the ground—and often together—in the Charlotte area. These four charitable foundations have a common tie in the community as they work to support children, the hungry and homeless, and military families. “The work done by these charities will make a difference in our whole community,” says Starr Miller, event co-chair.
14 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES
“We believe these charities are a tangible reflection of the Interior Design Society’s values,” adds event chair Audrey Clawson. Motor Racing Outreach MRO serves the local NASCAR racing community, a vital part of the area, by providing Christian support to those who work in the motorsports industry and who spend most of their Sundays at the racetrack. The organization also actively partners with other foundations to provide assistance to the homeless, children, and military families. “All of the foundations involved in this event are a perfect collaborative fit,” says MRO president and chaplain Billy Mauldin. “What is exciting for us is the ability to take the dollars raised to help others in many different
ways, from providing at-risk programs for adults and teens to addressing kids’ needs and feeding and clothing those who are homeless. This really will benefit the whole Metrolina area.” Hendrick Family Foundation Rick and Linda Hendrick have a long history of putting dollars into the local area to benefit those in need, most specifically assisting and advocating for financially disadvantaged children and their families. The foundation often collaborates with other organizations in the community to achieve even more than is possible on its own, including organizing food drives and holiday meal drives. The Hendrick Family Foundation reported impact of providing 4.6 million pounds of food to support neighbors in the local area.

The Dale Jr. Foundation The Earnhardt racing family has raised millions of dollars to feed hungry children, fund summer camp for medically challenged kids, and provide access to medical care and prescription drugs that are out of reach for some families. The foundation does not work alone, and to date, has partnered with 300 other national organizations to serve underprivileged youth. Its work exemplifies a vital part of the spirit of giving back in the NASCAR community.

Operation FINALLY HOME The charity chosen by the Southern Living Custom Builder Program to receive a portion of proceeds is Operation FINALLY HOME. Since 2005, the organization has coordinated teams of builders, remodelers, developers, corporate and individual sponsors, and volunteers to build and renovate homes for American military veterans and their families. Its goal is to provide custom-built, mortgage-free homes to military heroes and their families who have sacrificed their personal comfort for this country. So far, FINALLY HOME has completed 250 houses in thirty-three states. “We bring together communities, builders, developers, and designers to provide for deserving veterans. Thanks to the donations being raised by the showhouses, we will be able to honor another hero with a home, allowing him to continue to heal,” says executive director Rusty Carroll.

Influenced by the distinct flow that chinoiserie design offers, KLI used principles of this design aesthetic, then toned the vibrant wall panels with soft, subtle paint colors and solid fabrics. Because chinoiserie gained popularity in the eighteenth century, it takes a delicate balance of the right choices to make a design like this work—to put a modern spin on it yet still keep its timeless profile. Inspired by an idea to infuse bright colors into the design palette, KLI used geometric pairings, both large and small, to create a subtle design balance without overwhelming the mix of contemporary minimalism and fresh-from-the-garden spring vibe. The stamped brass bed with clean lines, another nod to tradition, together with the lacquered corridor, hand-painted pillows, custom artwork, and moldings, help to bring the space to life, offering a serene sanctuary that anyone can enjoy.

SUITE 4 BROOKE COLE Brooke Cole Interiors
I imagined the suite being used by a whimsical daughter or as a chic guest respite where the woman of the house is allowed to let her design aspirations run free. When I think of elegance, I think of soft, soothing colors, florals, and restraint from bold contrasts and bright colors. Windy O’Connor’s Cherry Blossoms mural wallpaper in lavender was the element that kicked off the overall design scheme. Modernity was also introduced through the graphic block patterns on the drapery trim and the geometric floor covering. As a contrast to the lively wallpaper, the original encaustic wall art by Dusty Griffith complements the geometric theme and allows your eyes a moment to rest. A stunning modern brass chandelier beautifully encompasses the soaring ceilings. 26 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

LAUNDRY ROOM RUTH MCKINNEY McKinney Design Begin with great natural light and a terrific view. You will need a generous and gorgeous sink and fixtures, as well as beautiful, well-crafted, functional cabinetry and state-of-the-art appliances. Of course, you must have space for hanging, space for folding, lots of storage, and excellent ambient and task lighting for working on those pesky stains. Lush and enveloping color is a must. Give the window a soft drape, and hang beautiful and inspiring art on the walls for that all-important splash of whimsy. Add some pretty plants. Now turn up the music and enjoy! 704-425-0114 MCK-DESIGN.COM RUTH.MCKINNEY@MCK-DESIGN.COM 38 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

MASTER BEDROOM LOUNGE DESIGNED WITH RELAXATION IN MIND, OUR MASTER BEDROOM LOUNGE IS A SPACE THAT’S INSPIRING, GLOBAL, AND BOOKISH (IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE). Pulling inspiration from our recent sourcing trips, you find a rattan light fixture, a custom bar cart, and seating, all from Bali, as well as a vintage rug handpicked in Morocco. The inspiration for the colorful pops of teal and pink came from our collaboration with the talented Jill Seale, who created the custom marbled wallpaper and cushion fabric that ties the entire space together. In true House of Nomad style, we layered the room in texture, pattern, and color—our favorites being the marble-stacked lamps, the burl-wood desk, and the Balinesian seagrass mirror. A place where a couple can relax with a glass of wine or a book at the end of the day, this space speaks to luxurious wanderlust. 40 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

The Modern Farmhouse bonus room is a curated space that evokes serenity and positive energy, and it expresses that aesthetic in as many ways as possible. Serving as a multifunctional hub to wrap up the end of the day, the space can be used for conversation with friends, relaxing with a drink and a book, or watching the latest film on the big screen with surround sound. In either application, the result is a room that draws you back again and again. The natural, earthy vibe comes from the abundance of smooth lines that emanate everywhere your eyes fall. The gradient nature of the design grounds the energy, effortlessly making it one of the most relaxing rooms in the house.

FAMILY ROOM MEREDITH BEREGOVSKI Georgia Street Design
From a warm but varietal color palette consisting of mossy greens, cool neutrals, and accents of brass, we built a space that would welcome and excite. Features of the design such as the grasscloth wallpaper within the built-ins, the rattan sconces flanking the fireplace, and the woven composition of the rug add textural elements to the space without overwhelming it. A fundamental of this design was using pattern and texture to create an elegant but fresh reminder of traditional gathering rooms; this was executed by the striking woodland-themed drapery that anchors the rear windows, the plush weave of the sofa, and the herringbone tile in the fireplace. This room invites all to gather in it while marveling at its elegance and timelessness.

MY DESIGN GOAL WAS TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL SPACES WITH INTERESTING DETAILS. I began by selecting distinctive elements such as Mitchell Black wallcovering and Windy O’Connor art. With the painted white brick accent wall, I knew the remaining walls could handle a bold wallpaper. I appreciated the high ceiling, so I chose a glossy, light blue to complement O’Connor’s happy art. The mid-century modern feel of the pendants with the intermingling of Molé black-and-gold finishes was just too perfect for the space to install only one. Don’t forget to admire yourself in the unique mirror. And peek out the lovely treated window to the welcoming back porch. In this room, you can see this represented in the beautiful French oak nightstands and chair, which are custom made. Through the use of the traditional printed floral fabric from Thibaut and the matte-gold canopy bed, I created tension and balance in the room by juxtaposing those elements with the more masculine furniture pieces. I believe a bedroom should be a haven and a respite from the outside world. To create that space, I chose a dark-black berry color on the walls to ground the room and provide a foundation for the rich Thibaut fabrics and the reclaimed French oak. I carried this through to the pale coral bathroom with the use of the white-oak vanity, the pale coral walls, the mosaic marble floors, and the hand-cut tile.

MASTER CLOSET THE MODERN FARMHOUSE CLOSET INCORPORATES SLEEK AND NATURAL TEXTURES, BRINGING HARMONY TO A SMALLER SPACE. One does not spend hours in the closet every day, but the time spent in this space is most certainly meaningful. Your clothing can speak volumes about your personality, and what you choose to wear corresponds with your activities on that particular day. Are you throwing on workout clothes to drop off the kids and hit the gym, or are you putting on your favorite, most stylish work outfit? Either way, this closet space is where you start and end your day, so the right elements of fashion, style, bling, details, and coziness are very important. The sleek, modern look of the navy acrylic doors evoke a confident, clean energy that will kick-start your day, while the soft, natural touches of the fabrics and the countertops are calming elements that give this space a more simple look and a warm feel. 58 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

This begins in the foyer by showcasing to all who enter something about its inhabitants. Parrish was inspired by the gallery-like setting, which begged for architectural pieces and colorful art to set the stage of the home. Each piece fulfills its purpose with interest and intrigue. The skeleton bench, art in itself, serves as a “rest stop” to admire the faces of the bold and eloquent art of Page Morris. Flowing into the master foyer, the fun begins with a whimsical antelope bench and candid art from fashion and design artist Julian Cardinal. Art continues to flow with wallcoverings from the master foyer ceiling into the powder room. Each Finnish artist has created depth and movement pairing with the window covering of the debut fabric line from Parrish DeLapp. Surprising coziness through florals, nature, and texture, combined with color and life, is Modern Farmhouse.

As they were narrowing down the myriad possibilities, they almost simultaneously landed on music. They wanted to gear their space toward teenagers who love rock ’n’ roll. Their inspiration started simply with a desire to have music “on the walls.” From there, they envisioned a different take on the bed wall—they mounted two cherry-red electric guitars, lit from the back to add an extra punch. Once those key details were secured, the rest was a blur of creative explosions. By keeping the background crisp and white, and the furnishings dark with varying textures, other elements come to life. Concert posters, records abounding, music constantly flowing—there is always a party in the Kids Rock room. “Rock ’n’ roll is—and should be—a kid’s place.”—Ben Folds 64 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

Inspired by these fond memories, I envisioned a room that allowed a child’s imagination to run wild yet had the sensibility to grow with them. The forest wallpaper became the perfect backdrop for this room, setting a classically whimsical tone in which a child can explore. To evoke the feeling of a curated, timeless, and versatile space, the camel leather dresser and classic spindle bed were selected as the room’s foundational pieces. In juxtaposition with these pieces, I wanted to create a special place within the room that any child would love—a fort. I strive to design bold, collected, and colorful spaces. By embracing the foyer’s unique layout and oversized double doors, my goal was to use color to create a bright and welcoming entrance to the home. Bright colors, pulled from the Phillip Jeffries wallpaper panels, inspired the custom, colorful wool rug with a graphic motif from Nashville Rug Gallery. The rug not only brings the room together, it also acts as an oversized piece of art. Brass and marble finishes on the furniture and decor are the accent pieces that connect the space, while surreal art and transitional and mid-century style pieces are the collected items that complete the room. This room was no different, and a sense of warmth and texture was his goal. The starting point for this design was the lumbar pillow on the sofa, which brings in the deep-water tones from the plunge pool that is just outside the sliding doors. These shapes and the color story were incorporated throughout the room. Ennis wanted this space to have a great sense of touch and texture. He was able to achieve this by applying different wallpapers, mixing leathers and lush fabrics for upholstery, and combining woods, metals, and various other materials. The result is a modern blend of classic design elements shown in a current color and texture palette to blend with the theme of a Modern Resort. 78 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

The veranda is the “ultimate chill space,” where you can enjoy a cocktail or catch a movie from the hidden screen that is easily accessed with a push of a button. I really enjoyed designing this space, and I hope you will enjoy it, too!

MUDROOM & HALLWAY CAROLYN GALLOWAY C Galloway Designs SPARKLING, ELEGANT MUDROOM. An oxymoron for sure, yet so true. Just peruse the sparkling metals of the art, hardware, and light fixture while identifying the purposely designed storage and seating for everyday utilization. There is room for current seasonal sports equipment, and even an especially cozy area for your favorite pet. The pet bed includes a zippered denim cover for easy washing. Having watched children try to organize, the storage under the bench was created with backpacks and shoes in mind. Open shelving houses seasonal shoes for easy selection, making the “get out the door” mornings more manageable.

Notice the “last-minute” mirror placed strategically beside the back door for that last look as you head out for the day. What a great way to keep the usual chaos under control.

GUEST BATHROOM I WANTED TO DESIGN A GUEST BATH THAT WAS UNAPOLOGETICALLY FEMININE—A CREATIVE ESCAPE INTENDED ONLY FOR HER. Vintage-inspired pink tile, white marble floors, and graphic plum wallpaper wrap this modern resort-themed showhouse bath in fun luxury. The floating vanity with clean-line slab doors and drawers is softened with a hand-carved glazed ceramic sink and brushed gold fixtures. Above, a swarm of butterflies offers an unconventional touch of art. All these elements come together to create a vibe that is boldly unique with refined modern touches. KRISTIE KNORR & TEAM IMPACT Design Resources THIS MASTER CLOSET DESIGNED FOR THE MODERN MANOR HOME IS BOTH DRAMATIC AND SMARTLY PLANNED TO MAXIMIZE EVERY INCH OF SPACE AVAILABLE. Pulling color inspiration from the fabulous master bedroom wallpaper, the chic and edgy crocodile-leather doors and the drawers painted in Sherwin-Williams Quite Coral provide an over-the-top element to this personal, private space. There are plenty of thoughtful details focused on organization. This luxurious high-end closet is not only home to clothes, but it also stores wardrobe accessories, like jewelry, on a pullout. It has pullouts for shoes and one for a hidden mirror, as well. This lavish closet also includes places to store purses, watches, and folded items. The drawers under the stairs make great use of that unusual space and are kicked up a notch by adding a glass inset top to see special jewelry. Matte-gold finishes add just the right completing touch to this very custom closet. 84 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

WHEN DESIGNING THE BONUS ROOM FOR THE MODERN RESORT HOME, MELISSA LEE OF NEW SOUTH HOME AND BRENNA MORGAN OF STUDIOB INTERIORS PULLED INSPIRATION FROM THE GRAND HOTEL LOBBIES FOUND IN ASIAN-PACIFIC RESORTS. Their goal was to create an upscale, family-friendly space by mixing natural elements with fine fabrics and modern conveniences. The 450-square-foot room is divided into three sections to maximize functionality and fun with two game tables, a custom beverage center, and a luxurious media space. The modern wood paneling, three chandeliers, and lighted jadegreen backsplash were all custom designed with an upscale resort feel in mind. On top of these decorative details, high-end features such as a fifty-five-inch television, two refrigerators, and motorized window shades have been successfully blended into the design. All of the seating is upholstered in stain-resistant performance fabrics to allow the homeowners to focus solely on their enjoyment in this space specifically designed for high-end family entertainment.

StudioB Interiors Brenna Morgan has always had a love of design. When she was a child, she used to rearrange her bedroom almost weekly, playing with the furniture and noticing how it fit into the space. Fast forward many years, Morgan found herself immersed in a real estate career in Charlotte. But her love of design continued, and in 2016, she made the switch to interior design, earning her certification from the New York Institute of Art and Design. After working at New South Home for a few years, she opened StudioB, a design studio specializing in homes in North Charlotte and the Lake Norman area. StudioB creates livable luxury—spaces that look and feel luxurious but are meant to be lived in without worry. From small-room refreshes to full-scale remodels, StudioB can tackle it all. Morgan feels that interior design isn’t just about pretty furnishings and finishes; it’s also about how you live your life in your home. Beautiful design isn’t just a single formula, it’s different for everyone, and Morgan prides herself on listening to her clients and bringing their vision to life.

GUEST BEDROOM ZACHARY LUKE Zachary Luke Designs I started with bold green on the walls and teal on the ceiling. The materials in this bedroom are soft, inviting, and classic. Notice the organic details on the side chair, the drink table, the drape pattern, and the bedding. We cannot forget about the amazing bubble chandelier overhead, which adds so much interest to the ceiling with the warm shadows it produces. The lamps have embellished leaf- or tree-like patterns on them, creating visual interest. It’s all about the organic touches in this room. I also love the silver metal finish on the bedside chests, lamps, light fixture, and drapery hardware. This is an excellent material to design with and always remains classic. The abstract art placed above the bed adds that extra pop in this bedroom and pulls everything together so well. 704-763-0391 ZACHARYLUKEDESIGNS.COM ZACHARYLUKEDESIGNS@GMAIL.COM 88 IDS CHARLOTTE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSES

The study features an inviting palette of taupe, indigo, and bone in a mix of textures and materials. The walls are covered in a neutral-colored grasscloth wallcovering, providing the perfect backdrop to showcase original artwork from several North Carolina artists. The beautifully hand-knotted wool and silk Tamarian rug has a subtle geometric pattern and is truly a work-of-art on the floor. The embroidered linen fabric used for the window treatments sets the tone for the other fabrics used throughout. The one-of-a-kind acrylic desk chair allows the art and collectibles on the custom bookcase to be seen while providing a comfortable place to sit. Subtle metallic finishes are infused in the lighting, accessories, and mirror-topped desk.

POOL POWDER ROOM WITH A MOODY TWIST, THIS INSPIRED-BY-NATURE POWDER ROOM LAYERS VARIED TEXTURES AND NEUTRAL HUES TO CREATE AMBIANCE. A custom Aronson Woodworks vanity and curved back wall anchor the small but vital space. Morgan Hunt’s hand-painted mural—a whimsical take on the beautiful weeping willow tree—is a focal point. The dark bronze countertop and walls provide a striking contrast to the marble floors and light metallic mural. Lighting and hardware provide the musthave touch of black while the natural material mirror brings the outdoors in. These details culminate in a luxurious, inviting space that functions beautifully for pool and dinner guests alike.
