the new bold By Anne Marie Ashley
There is a certain charm to older homes that can only be truly appreciated by someone with an eye for seeing character in wood paneling, narrow doorways and pronounced rooms. And further, for seeing the potential these character-laden elements can bring to a well designed home, making it equally stylish and relaxed.

harlotte is dripping with these homes and for those that can see the possibilities, it’s a paradise. The homeowners of this feature home have a soft spot for early 1900s architecture and when they discovered this home in one of the most historic parts of Charlotte, they knew they’d make it their own. The resulting home was bold – and completely comfortable. We spoke about this project with interior designer Lindsey Coral Harper and the renovation team to find out how it all came together. Andrew Roby General Contractor and Sam Greeson of Meyer Greeson Paullin Benson Architecture were called in to oversee and execute the renovations. “Most of the changes were stylistic,” explains Greeson, “to meet the new owner’s desire for a younger, more modern look.” That’s where New York-based interior designer Lindsey Coral Harper came in. “It just needed a little bit of freshening up,” says Harper. “We took out every bit of carpet and repainted every square inch!” The kitchen was the largest of the renovations, making the originally tiny space much larger and marrying it nicely with the recent family room addition. An artist was flown in from New York to hand paint the interesting kitchen floor. “The banquette was added at the pass thru to the family room, where the sink had previously been located, explains Greeson. We discussed opening the wall up, but it would have disturbed the flow and arrangement of both spaces. With the final solution, you feel that the kitchen is huge, but we actually didn’t add any square footage. The whole project, renovation and interior design included, took just four months to complete. “The process was faster than it normally would have been thanks to the homeowner knowing exactly what she wanted and Andrew Roby’s well organized schedule,” says Greeson. “Communication is everything when it comes to construction schedule and overall quality,” says Chris Maynard of Andrew Roby. “Projects don’t go this well or turn out this beautifully if you don’t have the team of home owners, designer, architect and contractor all working for the same goal - which is outstanding quality and a wonderful experience.” Harper knew what her client was looking for from the get-go. “I knew my client was moving from a one-bedroom apartment in New York City to a four-bedroom house in Charlotte,” says Harper. “ I had a sense of her overall taste, so shopping for her and finding things she liked was the easy part. It helps when your client has great taste!” Harper called on the help of local custom window treatment and sewing experts Elaine Mitchell and Pam Dawes of Interior Couture of the Carolinas. “Lindsey’s eye for design is unparalleled,” says Pam. “The fabrics she chooses, the textures and layering of design, really creates

some unique elements in a home.” Elaine adds, “her designs are simple, but with the bold fabrics and rich textures, the result is extraordinary.” Harper says incorporating this client’s personality into the home was easy. “I am creating a ‘home’ and space for them, it’s not about me. I know they are a very friendly, young, stylish couple that loves to have friends and family over. So that is what I tried to translate.” Harper suggests a fresh coat of paint in any room to liven it up and change the look or mood. Pam and Elaine suggest freshening up a room with window treatments, adding that great window treatments can truly make or break the look of a home. “In this case,” says Harper, “we stripped away everything and painted and/or papered every room. We changed everything about it and basically started from scratch.” There are several ways to use bold design in any home, but according to Harper, it will always change depending on the client. “In this home, each room has at least one bold element. In the entry it’s the wallpaper; the dining room - the glass chandelier; in the kitchen it’s the bold use of color and pattern; the living room has those beautiful curtains and all the powder rooms have really great wallpapers.” “I think there are a lot of bold elements throughout this house,” says Harper, “but they all blend together to make one cohesive story.”v

There is nothing I love more than a clean slate, an empty room – a room that doesn’t even exist, actually. When I work with a client in the beginning stages of a remodel or an addition, we don’t have any obstacles to deal with. We can really think about the function of the room and, with the help of an amazing contractor and carpenter, we can have everything on our wish list. I recently worked with the Freemans on a new project, transforming their garage into a new family room and pool house bath. Pulling in The Salin’s Group for expertise, we sought out to create a functional, stylish space for a family of five. Style was very important. Something beautiful, chic and fun that echoed the feel of the wooded lot their secluded home occupied, yet more artistic and modern than the typical “cabin” look. I chose bright birch tree wallpaper, with an almost hand-drawn feel, to cover the room. The clean and modern look of this paper set the tone of the room and became the focal point. It’s very eye catching and bright, and with the large retractable

doors the trees seemed to drift into the wooded backyard in such a beautiful way. The next step was to filter in large and simple pieces of furniture in warmer tones. Since I was working with such a sharp, clean and modern paper, I chose natural wood accent furniture to warm it up. These amazing pieces, while rustic in material, all have the modern clean lines I needed to compliment the overall look. I believe they’re works of art on their own. I then chose a large dark leather sectional couch. I love sectionals, especially tight back sectionals. The look is cleaner and over time, you aren’t dealing with the back cushions losing shape. This piece is large enough to be the main furniture in the room and accommodates their growing family. This room was screaming for a Lucite bubble chair. It’s modern lines worked well with the overall feel, but more importantly it doesn’t visually block the great wallpaper paper - plus, honestly – it was just fun! Speaking of ways to avoid taking away from

your key element, hidden built-in storage was a decision we all made early on. The entire wall opens up for ample storage, yet is designed and built in a way that doesn’t call attention. The finished product is clean, functional, and artistic, and a new room everyone wants to spend time in together just enjoying the “outdoors.” v Beth Keim is the owner of Lucy and Company, a full-service interior design firm located at 1009 East Boulevard. Dear Friends; For me, a much deserved milestone has bee reached and will be celebrated to your significant benefit. After almost 50 years in the business I love most, I’ll be stepping back to catch up on a few things I’ve promised himself along the way. This for you presents a rare and unexpected opportunity. Beginning immediately, we’ll be reducing inventory to as close to zero as possible. With Lions’ Jewelers’ Retirement Sale we intend to accomplish exactly that. Savings of up to 60% will mark this, the largest sale in our history. Today begins our intended liquidation of over 7 million dollars of the kind of spectacular jewelry and giftware for which Lions has been famous. Familiar faces will be here to greet you and assist in any way we can. If jewelry is part of this year’s gift list – or if up to 60% savings now means it should be – please consider this once-in-alifetime opportunity. We look forward to seeing you!

minimalism Finds Home in the South
By Anne Marie Ashley
When interior designer Steven Rasnick and his partner moved to Charlotte from San Francisco, he suspected they’d end up in a modern Uptown apartment in the heart of the city. hat they discovered, as many do when they move to the South, is that the charm of some of Charlotte’s neighborhoods can be irresistible. Finding minimalist style in an old charming area however, can present a challenge. Thankfully, the couple found the perfect Georgian style home in Myers Park that just begged for Rasnick’s creative eye and the result is nothing short of an impeccable use of minimalist style. We just had to explore this house, and this designer, further. UH: You come from progressive San Francisco – what drew you to this traditional home and neighborhood in Charlotte? Homeowners: Originally, we thought about a center city apartment close to work, but nothing was meeting our needs in a home. We fell in love with Myers Park - great location, enchanting streets, beautifully maintained yards and homes, and its magnificent tree canopy. We wanted an older home with character that we could renovate. UH: Tell us about your San Francisco (SF) residence and how it influenced the design of your home in Charlotte. 32

Best Of Guide 2012
Homeowners: Our home in SF was a large urban industrial loft with 20-foot ceilings. We loved our wide-open floor plan and wanted to create that same sense of openness in our Charlotte home. UH: What did the house look like when you found it? Homeowners: The house was really lovely; great curb appeal with perfect proportions typical of 1920s Georgian architecture. It was simple, symmetrical and unadorned with all brick construction, a screened porch and the original detached two-car garage. Interiors were period appropriate with intimate rooms, great moldings and panel detail. UH: Tells us about the renovation process. Homeowners: We knew we wanted to open up the downstairs and fortunately there were no structural barriers to prevent that. We widened and heightened all existing doorways to give a more soaring quality to all the rooms. We converted the side porch to a sunroom, took out a full bath off the family room and added a wall of French doors that opened onto a new colonnaded back porch. We added a mudroom off of the new kitchen and created a powder room under the staircase by combining a closet with the back of the butler’s pantry. We also added a second master suite.

UH: How long did the remodel take place? Homeowners: It took just over a year to complete and we couldn’t live in it for the first 10 months. We replaced all the wood floors on the first floor, built interior closet systems and reconfigured the center hall staircase. We balanced and re-hung all the old doors and replaced all the brass hardware. UH: How do you create minimalist style without the house looking cold? Homeowners: Most of our furniture and lighting is contemporary and the minimal styling of it is a perfect counterweight to the more substantial period details of the house - tall baseboards, crown moldings, panel doors and ornate staircase accents. Warmth is added with rich stained floors, vibrant art and textured rugs. UH: How have you used art to decorate? Homeowners: All the art is original. For us, art is a preeminent consideration when looking for a new home. I think art is what anchors

your home - no matter where you move to - it remains the one true constant. It makes your house comfortable in the most important way. UH: Tell us about the master bath. Homeowners: We designed the new master suite at the top of the stairs around a double-sided gas fireplace. The fireplace was built in Canada and is distinguished by a 36-inch narrow ribbon of fire. I wanted to enjoy the fire both from the bathroom and the bedroom, so I designed a deep, Japanese soaking tub with a wide deck and angled back for comfort that faces the fireplace cabinet. I also designed the bedroomside maple fireplace cabinet. UH: What are your favorite local design resources? Homeowners: My local go-to stores are places like Mrs. Howard, Luxe, BD Jeffries, Metro, Design Within Reach, Stark Carpet, Cotswold Marketplace and the DOMA Gallery.v

Home Away From Home
trent haston This year, I see a few trends that give me hope for better living ahead.
As 2012 comes to a close, I have time to look back on the projects Andrew Roby has worked on and reflect on the custom home trends of the past year. Thankfully, I see that we are starting to put the FUN back into our homes. When the economy initially took a nosedive, people hesitated to spend money on their homes and I think it’s fair to say that most contractors were surviving on maintenancetype projects - repairs and fixes that were absolutely necessary. However, once things began improving a little, we started seeing need-based additions and renovations; projects that would allow homeowners to remain comfortable in their current homes when selling them wasn’t an option. This year, I see a few trends that give me hope for better living ahead. Outdoor living areas were one of our most popular projects of the year: pools, patios, kitchens and decks. I see this trend reflecting our desire to get out and enjoy the company of our friends and family. Over the past 12-18 months we have completed at least 15 outdoor spaces, over half of which have included pools. Outdoor kitchens are also on the rise—and these are not skimpy kitchens. Outdoor kitchen appliances are rivaling indoor kitchen appliances in cost, design and practicality. Customers use these kitchens in the same way they use their indoor counterparts. Patios and decks are also reflecting our desire to bring quality living outside. We are using a lot more Ipe (Brazilian hardwood), which is a virtually weatherproof wood that hardly shows its age. Ipe has surpassed its demand of 2007 as the “high end” outdoor product of choice, and one that I highly recommend. Another popular project in 2012 was the spa-inspired master bathroom. These bathrooms are becoming roomier, with more open floor spaces and larger private water closets. Fixtures, such as glass bowl sinks and waterfall faucets, are bringing design and ambiance along with their functionality. Perhaps the most spa-like features are showing up in the showers. Homeowners are going larger and more indulgent, adding various showerheads, body sprays and spectacular frameless shower surrounds. These bathrooms are also becoming more personal. In a recent article, I urged homeowners to consider a bath remodel in effort to make this space a retreat. I suggested adding heated floors, towel warmers, plush furniture, TVs and special art. These are exactly the trends I have seen echoed in our projects throughout the year. There is another major trend that has become hard to ignore, as it has spurred several new divisions for Andrew Roby – the return of the vacation home. We are finding that our customers in the Charlotte and Raleigh markets are longing for that fresh mountain air and sea salt life on the coast that are so conveniently located to the urban areas of North Carolina. We are currently in various stages of the construction process for seven new homes in these areas, as new custom construction (as well as remodels and maintenance) are trending up. The quality has not gone by the wayside either, as they seek to match or exceed the quality and product selections of their primary homes. Projects in these areas are using top-notch materials such as Ipe wood decks, Nano doors and Marvin/Pella/Jeldwen windows, just to name a few. This year has shown me more than ever that we all long to be home. Country clubs, spas and resorts may be fun for a while, but home is truly where the heart is, even on vacation.v Trent Haston is CEO of Andrew Roby and has spent many years in project management, focusing on style and craftsmanship for custom home projects. here are so many gorgeous neighborhoods in Charlotte, any one of which offer a plethora of interesting places to dwell. Living inside a high-rise condo in the historic Fourth Ward, however, may be the most interesting of all. With sweeping views of the silver skyline and the bustling streets of Charlotte below, our feature home is a master class in sophisticated city living. And that balcony... well, it’s a view indeed. The condo was a blank slate for Sonja Elliot of Sonja Elliot Interiors, with all white walls and nothing but the kitchen cabinetry bringing in color. Built in 2010, The Vue is the tallest residential building in the Southeast with 50 floors of studio and penthouse condos, all complete with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies. The homeowner had purchased a unit with the largest balcony, and when Sonja was asked to decorate the new condo,
she knew it was a designer’s dream project. “He said ‘Just do your thing, Sonja’,” she says. “I knew what the homeowner liked, having worked on other spaces of his, and I had the freedom to show his personality throughout the condo.” The condo has an innate modern feel to it, being part of an urban high-rise, but Sonja’s client had decidedly traditional taste – so she married the two, creating a classic space with warm earthy tones and furniture, and a cool vibe with sleek accessories. “If I had put a tufted leather sofa in the condo, it would have been out of place,” explains Sonja. “The homeowner is modern but comfortable, traditional, but warm. And I think I pulled that off in the décor.” Sonja’s inspiration for the design and palette of the condo sprang from the backsplash she discovered for the kitchen. The tortoise shelllike design included shades of blacks, browns, creams and tans, and it was installed row by row along the wall. Everything else just grew from the kitchen - outward. The entire process took Sonja 14 months to complete, from concept to installation and she chose most of the furniture and art herself, while the sculptures were already part of the client’s collection. “Art was the biggest component of the job,” says Sonja. “Living with great art makes you feel good.” Each room has a unique piece of art to pull everything together and the homeowner uses his sculpture pieces to add an extra layer of interest. “The terrace was the second biggest part and my client wanted to ‘feel some green’ when he walked out onto the balcony,” says Sonja. With the landscaping expertise and help of Solow Design Group, she created three greenscapes on the terrace with tall trees and potted plants alongside comfy outdoor dining furniture with an amazing view of the horizon, and relaxed seating on the side balcony overlooking the city. A small glass outdoor fireplace was added for a warm, cozy feel and ambient, solar powered lighting was installed in and around the landscape for evenings. The homeowner discovered the bright orange Chihuly glass centerpiece in the Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte and brought it to Sonja to see if she could incorporate it. When paired with the painting in the dining room, it adds a pop to the room “that’s just perfect,” says Sonja. For the rest of the home, Sonja chose a warm palette of browns and creams, calling on the Historical Collection from Benjamin Moore for paint colors. “The Richmond Gold in the kitchen really articulated the traditional style the homeowner loves,” explains Sonja. “But that backsplash is what really inspired me.” “I loved every part of this project,” says Sonja. “My favorite piece, though, is the cocktail ottoman I placed in the living room. It adds great texture, but it’s also completely functional. And that’s the secret of great design – beauty and comfort in perfect harmony.”v To see all of the photos from this home, visit the Urban Home Magazine blog at www.urbanhomemagazine.com

Charlotte homeowners who appreciate the luxury of streamlined European cabinetry will be excited to learn about our city’s newest showroom. Hans Krug, an international manufacturer of European designed and engineered cabinets, recently opened its flagship showroom in Charlotte’s renaissance Westside. Hans Krug owner Tony Battah says the brand offers the same features and quality of high-end European cabinets such as SieMatic, Poggenpohl, Snaidero and Scavolini, at a fraction of the price. “Our cabinets use Blum premium hardware, the TANDEMBOX plus system and optional motorized Servodrive,” says Tony. Blum hardware is known throughout the industry for its integrated drawer slide system, which closes drawers and doors silently and effortlessly. “Our friendly prices and short turnaround times will set Hans Krug apart in the market,” says Tony, who explains that the cabinets are all made to order in less than ten weeks. “That’s less time than it takes most American based cabinet companies, at a cost that is less than a kitchen at a big box store.” German kitchen designer Michael Schlütter is the product and design manager for the Hans Krug line. Michael developed his passion for kitchen design at the age of 16, working as an apprentice in his father’s kitchen design studio in Germany. He studied business management in Boca Raton, Florida before returning to Germany to work for SieMatic Kitchens. He was also a kitchen designer and project manager for 3er Kitchens in Munich, Germany. Now Michael is enjoying the challenge of setting the standards of excellence for Hans Krug showrooms, which will soon open across the world. Showroom openings

planned for 2014 include Singapore, Manila, Taiwan, Munich, Miami, New York, Dallas, Chicago and Los Angeles. The Hans Krug showroom in Charlotte is also a Miele premiere store, the largest in North Carolina, with more than 50 Miele products on display. Hans Krug partnered with Cosentino for its Silestone countertops and with Harkey Tile & Stone for the beautiful countertop fabrication. The result is a showroom that Tony calls ‘a cook’s dream.’ With more than 28 different finishes on the cabinets and over 370 sizes, Hans Krug promises to have something for everyone’s taste. “We
have a wide range, from modern cabinets with electric drawers to classic and transitional,” says Tony. v Open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Hans Krug showroom is on the corner of Freedom Drive and Morehead Street. The showroom welcomes the general public, builders, architects and designers. Visit the showroom at 1500-B West Morehead Street in Charlotte, NC, 28208. Best Of Guide 2012
By Anne Marie Ashley
When we asked Dorothy Smith how she would describe the style of her home, she seemed a little perplexed. “I just picked stuff I liked and left the rest to the designer,” she explains. We agree, this might be the best description of the Smith’s style – comfortable and well designed. The couple knew when they purchased the home that it would have to be added onto in order to accommodate their family and their desire for open space.
ith the help of architect Ken Pursley, the result was a house full of light and air that fit seamlessly into the rich history of Hermitage Road in midtown Charlotte. It looks as if every part of the home was there when it was built in 1913 and the Smiths have created a new space for their family that they cherish. We asked the homeowners to tell us a little about their style and the changes they made to their home. UH: Give us a little background on your home. Smiths: It was built in 1913 and was originally a two-story home with an attic. With a teenage boy who has two sisters, we knew we wanted to give him a space of his own. So we asked Ken to modify the third floor for our son. Also, the one thing the house was lacking was a family space, so we knew we wanted to add that.
UH: How did you find it? Smiths: We were looking for a home in Charlotte with a Realtor, but just happened to ride down Hermitage Road and see the sign in the front. We went to look at it and fell in love. We really wanted a home with a lot more light and space, taller ceilings and bigger windows and this fit the bill, with a few changes we planned to make. UH: What was the home like when you purchased it? Smiths: The previous owner had redone the bathrooms and some of the electrical and plumbing work to update it, but we knew we wanted to add on a large family space and update the look. We didn’t touch any of the older parts of the home with new construction, except for converting the old kitchen into a mudroom. The attic was the playroom when we purchased it, but we moved that area to the basement, which seemed to fit better with our lifestyle. UH: Tell us a little about the renovation process and timeline. Smiths: We spoke to Ken Pursley even before we officially owned the

house and told him what we wanted. We had seen his work in other houses and respected his talent a great deal, plus we loved his personality. It just seemed like a great fit and we started working with him right off the bat. The kitchen was the primary space we wanted to start on and get completed as soon as possible. But we also wanted to add a fifth bedroom, which turned into our son’s space on the third floor. I was looking for a huge family area that combined the kitchen with the living room and Ken really took the lead on coming up with the design – he made it happen. The end product was so perfect that I started to feel like it was all my idea to begin with! The entire construction process took about a year, and the interior design was done as we went along. UH: Talk to us about the interior design and working with Teri Thomas Interiors. Smiths: Teri worked with me on my previous home and I LOVE her style. We also hired Lucy and Company to do the girls bedroom/bathrooms to tie everything together in the end. Beth has such a cute children’s room

style. We wanted a very clean, uncluttered look that mixed contemporary elements with what we already had. We did a lot of the decorating before the construction was done because I was so impatient! UH: What are your favorite places to shop for things for your home? Smiths: I am not really a big shopper to be honest, but we travel a lot and while we do, we pick things up as we go. For the most part, Teri chose the accessories to compliment her design, as she often does. For local stores though, I LOVE Luxe and Decade. UH: What’s your decorating secret? Smiths: (Laughs) Hire an interior designer and have great artwork! UH: What’s your favorite room in the house? Smiths: The Garden Room, which is the new living area, and my office. Our whole family adores the front porch area though. Ken built the huge swing you see out there and it’s a family favorite spot.v

FOOD
Jim Alexander
design
Many food connoisseurs know that while French cuisine is inherently simple, it can be complicated to prepare correctly. There is an art in balancing the complexity of fewer ingredients in food that exudes richness and flavor. Chef and restaurant owner Jim Alexander is a graduate of the internationally known Culinary Institute of America. We sat down with Jim to discuss his French restaurant Zebra, and his success in the Charlotte restaurant scene. How has your menu evolved to stay relevant and fresh? We have become better at sourcing local produce, meats, fish and other ingredients. An example is our relationship with Captain Tim Griner of coastal South Carolina. He catches some of the tastiest fish in the world and has it to us in less than 24 hours. The organic produce we source from Dr. Dane Fisher, a biologist and owner of Fisher Farm, is another way we’re working more with local ingredients. Fisher Farms is known for award-winning tomatoes but also produces a distinct selection of gourmet and culinary vegetables. What are your favorite interpretations of the simple, yet rich French cuisine on your menu? You never see poached fish on a menu. I almost always start a multi-course menu with delicate poaching. Braising food is another great method. When properly executed, I can even get a non-carnivore to eat red meat (chuckles). Really, is there anything simpler than a pot roast? French food is as much about the simplicity of the ingredients as it is about how the ingredients come together. That interaction and presentation of the meal are crucial. What is it about your menu that consistently achieves awards with the likes of Zagats, AAA and Wine Enthusiast? Everyone at Zebra understands the importance of our food and the dining experience. We are all “foodies” and we have an understanding that every dish is just as important as the one served before it. The awards and accolades are wonderful recognition of our efforts, but they are not nearly as important as the dining experience of the guest who is in our restaurant at the moment.

Your restaurant is also known for the depth of your wine list. Why is this important? It’s really a balance of practicality and indulgence. Wine is a component of the entire white tablecloth, fine dining experience. A small wine list just doesn’t fit the depth of our menu. For example, we currently serve authentic Roquefort (yes, from Roquefort France) with walnuts and beets as an appetizer. The classic wine pairing is a port – but not just any port, a tawny port is best. This dish DEMANDS a good port. We also pride ourselves on finding the absolute best value in each price range. Zebra is located in the heart of SouthPark at 4521 Sharon Road. They are open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and special events. For more information, call 704-442-9525 or visit www.zebrarestaurant.net.
A Simple Party Recipe From Zebra Ingredients ¼ lb soft goat cheese (you may use equal parts of cream cheese and goat cheese)
12 seedless red grapes 3 Tbsp finely chopped pistachios
Method Cover each grape in a portion of the goat cheese by pinching off just enough cheese to cover each grape. Form the cheese around each grape with your finger tips then finish by rolling between your palms. Roll the cheese covered grapes in the ground pistachios, refrigerate until ready to serve.

Timeless
We all have those special items in our closets or jewelry boxes that make us feel like a million bucks. For me, there are few things more transformative than plush textures, elegant silhouettes, personally defining scents and statement pieces. Finding the balance between spending a little more on quality picks – which put a smile on your face every time you slip them on – and mixing in everyday essentials isn’t always easy, but when you do, it’s a beautiful thing.

t was the house everyone in Charlotte was interested in but no one would buy. Until self-proclaimed “serial remodelers” Joy and Michael Palermo walked through its doors. “We almost didn’t buy it,” said Joy Palermo. She described breaking down after their tenth walk-through of the house with house designer Frank Smith and builder Ben Collins of the Salins Group. Joy explained that the house had a nice exterior but was so quirky on the inside that it turned people off. “The rooms were dark, the flow was bad and one of the bedrooms had no windows,” she said. “The interior walls were 16” thick cement and could not be moved.” But the biggest design challenge would be adding an upstairs wing with bedrooms for the couple’s four children - within their budget. Thankfully, at the eleventh hour, the team created a plan to make the Mediterranean style home a perfect fit for the Palermo family.

“When you are here it feels like you could be anywhere in the world, even France or Italy. It is like you are on a vacation at home.”
Joy, an interior designer who graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and her husband Michael, a banker who shares his wife’s love of remodeling and her sense of style, began working closely with architect Frank Smith on the design of the home. “I have always loved Frank’s style,” she said. “He and I discovered we both love the book Villa by architect John Saladino (known for creating serenely timeless interiors). We decided that’s where we wanted to go with it, and it grew from there.” “We are so busy all the time,” said Joy. “I wanted to create an environment that made us feel really protected, a space that was cozy and soothing.” Joy used a very calming color palette to create an overall feeling of symmetry. She mixed furniture and accessories from her other houses with new items selected specifically for this home. “Antiques bought in Paris sit beside things from IKEA,” she said. “It’s a great eclectic mix of high and low, old and new, pulled together with the neutral tone.” When asked about her favorite architectural detail Joy is quick to mention the courtyard with its new pool. “I love the courtyard,” she said. Previously unusable space, it was Frank’s idea to put in a pool. Now the family hangs out there all the time. Joy laughs when she says the questions people ask the most are, ‘How can you live through a renovation like this with four children and how do you stay married?’ But the Palermos have renovated a total of five homes together in their 15-year marriage and they truly love the process. “This house is unlike any of our other houses,” she said. “We have done the Southern thing and the Georgian thing, but this home is our little cocoon inside Charlotte. When you are here it feels like you could be anywhere in the world, even France or Italy. It is like you are on a vacation at home.” And though she already has her next dream project in mind (a fisherman’s cottage in the Hamptons – done in all white) she admits this home could be a keeper. “This house is beyond what I had envisioned,” said Joy. “It truly is one of those houses that is once in a lifetime - the house everybody wanted but nobody wanted. I am just so glad we saw the potential.” v
