Deszion Amani Nasir was born in raised in Hampton, VA, where she penned her first novel in the 6th grade when her simple ideas were read by others and she was told "Wow... this is good. You should be a writer." The light bulb clicked on and never turned off. In 2012 Nasir debuted her first novel, "Untrust," the strange tale of an unusual set of twins with no family, yet more family drama than one’s ever deem possible. Then she released, "Dragonflies & Demons," part one of a short series about a couple stuck in a vicious cycle of domestic violence that blurs the lines between victim and abuser. After that, the follow-up of "Untrust" entitled "Wicked Blues," dropped in November. She is currently writing her first paranormal/sci-fi novel, "Sariah," which is due to be released in the Spring. This excitingly eerie novel will come out in the Spring. Nasir is currently in the works to drop an Anthology with two other authors that will be released in June. The next installment to her series, Uncommon Devil, will be released in the Fall.

Education Essential!!! By: PJ Fleming

Most children growing up today are not big fans of attending school. Honestly, I was guilty of that at one time. In that time I couldn't stand going to school, sitting in some boring ass classroom, listening to some old geezer ramble on about a whole bunch of nothing, which I felt I couldn't apply later on in life anyway. Most kids today feel the same way, by a survey that showed when kids were asked how they felt about school, 90% responded with. "Why should I learn that and I will not

use it later?" My past sentiments exactly! It wasn't until I got incarcerated that I learned the essentials of education. When I arrived at Westville Correctional Facility in 2007 I learned quickly that i couldn't do anything without at least a G.E.D... I mean, I couldn't even get a job cleaning toilets or sweeping the floors without a G.E.D... I know everyone has heard a grandparent say before or in a movie.

"A near accident with a child is no laughing matter." Um, the person who said that ain't got my kid's! ~Amaru

" You need to figure out what you're going to do with your life? You are going to be a high school dropout and end up flipping hamburgers for the rest of your life at McDonald's?'' Well I am here to tell you that is no longer a factor and / or option. Flipping those burgers at McDonald's is not in ones future without either being a student (in school) or at least having your G.E.D... Imagine That! Guess it is safe to say that education is quite essential. Let's look at a couple of examples of how education

has served as such. Garrett Augustus Morgan (1875-1963), was an African American inventor, who noted for two very important inventions; the threeway automatic traffic stop light and the gas mask (originally called a safety hood). If you pull up some pictures of Mr. Garrett Morgan, take a look at the man's hair. Mr. Morgan is also noted as the inventor for the tonic for straightening hair and the zigzag attachment for sewing machines, and published the Cleveland Call. Which was a weekly newspaper devoted to news about the African American community. Mr. Morgan started working at the age of fourteen, after only six years of schooling. While working as a sewingmachine adjustor for a clothing manufacturer, Mr. Morgan interest was sparked in mechanics. His inventions are still being used today all around America. The traffic lightwith minor improvements-still controls traffic in the United

24

States: controlling the movements of more than 100,000 vehicles per day. Mr. Morgan received the first U.S. patent for the traffic signal among other honors and awards. The inventor Eli Whitney is 'generally' accredited for inventing the cotton gin in 1793. (Note: Eli Whitney was a black man. However, in those times no black could legally hold a patent.) The cotton gin purpose was to separate the cotton from the seeds. Before the machine was created, the seeds had to be removed by hand by slaves, which was a labor-intensive, time consuming process. The invention of cotton gin allowed these seeds to be removed rapidly by mechanics. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica Ultimate Reference Suite, the cotton gin is "an invention that pulled the cotton through a set of wire teeth mounted on a revolving cylinder, the fiber passing through narrow slots in an iron breastwork too small to permit passage of the seed. The simplicity of the invention-which could be powered by

man, animal, or water- caused it to be widely copied despite Whitney's patent; it is credited with fixing cotton cultivation, virtually to the exclusion of other crops in the U.S. South and so institutionalizing slavery.'' My point in bringing up these men is quite simple. Education is essential, but it's not just bound to a classroom. The importance of educationlearning in general-applies to every facet of life. One learns trial and error, and the valleys- trials and tribulations-that one endures throughout everyday life. I read a quote by Julian Bond and he stated, "Violence is black children going to school for twelve years and receiving only six years worth of education." Which adds to my point, education is not always received in a classroom. Be-

25

"My kid's are black, white, and Indian mixed. They all fucked up! My son wants to open up a casino now. I'm like, "Hold on Tontoe! Let's steal some land first!" ~ Amaru

cause many schools today just push children through just to rid of them. Let's not get my words misconstrued; the last thing I am saying is that classroom time is not important. Classroom time is 'proof' of your accomplishments, proof that you know what you know. However, look at the proven educational history of Mr. Garrett Morgan, whom only had six years worth of schooling. But for him to create what he created. I doubt those six years is the extent of his educational background. I am sure he read many books and other materials that educated him to have the

knowhow and the ability to invent the things that he has invented. Had he stopped learning after what he received in those six years, I doubt that his name would ring any bells today. Education comes through daily life, from the old saying, "You live and you learn." I have a great-grandmother who is knocking at the back door of ninety. One thing that she will let anyone know, she learns something new each day. However, for her to learn something new each day, she has to have an open-

26

mind to be taught something, never getting to the point that she knows everything. That is the key to education, learning in school and most definitely learning from the situations and circumstances around you. To make it in today's society and while at the same time either avoiding prison or preventing a return, education is mandatory. Without it, your options do not include flipping burgers or cleaning toilets or sweeping floors for the rest of your life. Those menial jobs require some type of education. Education (knowledge) is the light to whatever goal you have, or whatever dream you

are trying to make reality. So learn what you can; when you can; how you can; and how much you can. A great quote by Toni Morrison says, '' If you can't count, they can cheat you. If you can't read, they can beat you." American schools will not always teach what you need to know. You have to go out and get it, putting in the work to learn and educate yourself with whatever reliable tools you can get your hands on. The world is in a constant state of change, we have to learn and evolve with it. Live and learn my friends!!!

Sadly society often society puts a stigma on sexually abused persons and how they are perceived. But Kenni York is giving the face of sexual abuse another look.

At the age of 14 Kenni was molested by her very own father, not a step-father or boyfriend of her mother’s, but her own biological father. For nearly 16 years she has har 29

The Michael Brown Tragedy: Where Do We Go From Here? By: Richarh Aswanu

Through all of the debating and media coverage going on, one thing needs to be remembered; a young man's life is gone. I try not to make everything about race all of the time -for two reasons. One; if we continue to use racism as an excuse we will never be able to move forward as a people. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist in America. But what I'm saying is; it's here we know it's here, it's never going anywhere, so it is up to us to figure out how to rise above it. Two; I've come to realize that alot of problems we face as African Americans aren't just "black" issues. They're issues faced by Americans period, white, black, Latino and every one in between. But...how can we say that race isn't the issue when it's only young unarmed black males dying at the hands of the police? That question has been posed in the media in the wake of

the cold blooded killing of Mike Brown. Here recently, Dillon Taylor an unarmed white male was gunned down by a black police officer in Salt Lake City, Utah. The conspiracy theorist in me wants to think that "they" figured it was time for some sort of affirmative action to ease the speculation and rumors of a systematic plot to eliminate the black male from the face of the earth. I don't know, maybe it is just a coincidence that a black cop murdered a white male in the wake of the Mike Brown situation. When is it going to stop? What can we

34

do to prevent any more of our youth from becoming Mike Brown? These are questions that are ringing throughout the black community. I don't know the answers. But I do know -that first, we must stop killing ourselves. If we're killing ourselves, how can we expect anyone else to care when one of our youth is murdered? We look weak and divided to the enemy, whoever that may be. I'm not big on the theory that there is some little white man hiding in a secret office pushing buttons as he plots to destroy us. But at the same time, I'd be totally blind not to recognize something is going on. From where I sit,

behind prison walls, I've learned how to observe war tactics on a smaller scale. People who are divided are much easier to attack. Our leaders can't seem to be able to come together and agree on what direction to go in order to solve our crisis. We'd have so much power if we'd come together. Why so many African American organizations? Why not one centralized organization with strong, intelligent leadership? I'll tell you why; the thirst for the spotlight, ego's, selfcenteredness and money. Spread out, we're just barely chipping away at a huge mountain. Together we'd crumble it. 35

prove. Long as we use excuses, we will never look within ourselves and ask ourselves; "What can we do to change this?" We have fallen into a pattern of selfdestructive behavior. To the so-called gangsters; the fearless goons We as a people have to stop displaying who roam our neighborhoods who are self-destructive behavior. us. You're prepared to either die or spend the rest of your lives in prison over a street corner, but are you ready to lay down your life building those same corners? I am not calling for violence, let's make that very clear. But let's take a look at our mindset. Even in prison, I have witnessed four "goons" run into another man's cell and stab him and brutal-

tearing up our own neighborhoods. Why didn't we march in Officer Darren Wilson's neighborhood? Self-destructive...

ly beat him in the process of robbing him for a cheap ass $19 cell phone. But, when the correctional officers go into the goon's cell for a shake down; they just willingly give it up without a fight. I never understood that logic. We have a self-destructive mindset. I understand the frustration, the hopelessness of our people; I am one of our people. But I never understood killing ourselves and

it ain't working. It's time for new leadership and new tactics. Personally, I have my eyes on Michael Eric Dyson and Marc Lamont Hill. I wish they would step into the much needed positions. Tired of our so-called black leaders criticizing our generation. But yet they want to show up, smile for the camera and give a sermon when something bad happens.

Albert Einstein says insanity is trying the same thing over and over while expecting different results. We've been marching, praying and singing Negro spirituals since the 50's. It's over for that,

37

It was completely appalling to see all those celebrities and leaders attending Mike Brown's funeral. It was just fake to me. Funerals are for friends and family. All I can say is; I'm waiting to see what they do after the smoke clears. Are they actually going to do something, or are they going to walk offscreen and fade to black until the next "situation"? I wish our entertainers who have been in the eye of the camera would put some money into a productive, pro-active organization and use their star power to help create some solutions instead of hollering Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown's name in a song to appear current on social issues to drive record sales. We're watching. The word on the streets is that ya'll are just hopping in front of the camera's to get some shine, to be able to say; "I was at ground zero" like you're some kind of survivor of a 911 war one or something. So, where do we go from here? From day one, I've always said Urban Image is your platform. This magazine is OUR voice, speak up and be heard. I am really interested in what you have to say and how you feel about 38

what's going on in our community. Drop me a line at info@urbanimagemagazine.com, let's talk about it.

On our Facebook page we asked our friends about their views on how we can prevent another tragedy like Mike Brown’s from reoccurring in the future. John S. Keenan responded and he hit on so many points that we felt inclined to print his response in it’s entirety.

John S. Keenan The first thing we need to do is educate ourselves... stop settling for what we're given and start getting some things on our own. 2nd would be to begin taking full responsibility for ourselves and actually become a community again. Starting with this whole "stop snitching" nonsense. I get the whole don't be a tattletale thing but if you have information that will help a family heal, use it! As a people, our mentality has to change. We need to stop using the past as an excuse as to why we feel we don't have a future. Stop letting people tell you what you can't do...and show them what you can do. The way we're treated as a people is the direct result of the lack of respect we have for ourselves and each other. We are the most selfish and non-supportive race there is. We are a hindrance to our own selves because we're afraid that someone is going to do better than what we're doing. We are the most talented, most versatile and most creative race that exist, yet we've allowed our ideas and our identities to be stolen because we don't want to see any of our own do better than us. We'd rather sabotage than to support and we do it constantly. On the outside looking in....we're seen as nothing more than loud mouthed, lazy savages. We are the ones that have to change that and we need each other to be able to do it.

6 Easy ways to Boost Your Metabolism By: Denetra Key

Metabolism is defined in the Taber's Medical Dictionary as the sum of all physical and chemical changes that take place within an organism; all energy and material

transformations that occur within living cells. How your body metabolizes food has a direct effect on whether you lose or gain weight. Many people struggle with slow sluggish metabolism. Here are some tips to help speed your metabolism so that is easier to lose weight.

42

1) Eat Breakfast: You've al-

ways heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a nutrient rich breakfast shortly after getting out of bed gets your motor (your metabolism) running.

2) Drink Water: A study shows that people who drank eight glasses of water burned more calories in a day than those who drank only four glasses. Dehydration slows your metabolism. Drinking sweetened drinks adds empty calories to your diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables can also be a great source of water.

43

3) Eat More Often: Eating three large meals a day allows your body's metabolism to slow between meals. Eating less meals then that makes your body think you are starving it so it goes into preservation mode by storing the food that you take in for energy at that point the body also stops burning fat. Eating small meals or snacks every three to four hours (known as grazing) cranks your body's metabolism.

4) Eat Protein: Your body burns more calories digesting protein than fats and carbs. It also takes longer to metabolize proteins which allows you to feel full for longer.

44

5) Spice Up Your Meals: Spicy foods such as peppers have natural chemicals to boost metabolism. You also tends to eat them slower which allows you to feel full with less food.

6) Drink Caffeine: Caffeine naturally increases your metabolism. It also allows you to feel less tired and increases endurance while you exercise. Most energy drinks contain caffeine and Taurine which both increase your metabolism. 45

Introducing Lupus the Mystery Disease By: Denetra Key

Growing up spending a lot of time with my grandmother, I remember her wearing these special built shoes and always, always, always having to wear a big hat and long sleeves out in the sun. Being so young I never understood why my Granny had to do these things. I asked my mother at an early age why my Granny had to cover up from the sun and the only explanation I was provided was that my grandmother had Lupus. Of course I had no idea at the time what that was. Inquiring more about my grandmother's particular case of Lupus I found out that her Lupus attacked her bones and made her feet cave in resulting in the need for the special built shoes she had to wear. Lupus also caused her to be very sensitive to the sun which was why she always had to cover up in the sun. She al-

so had Cushing's disease because of the high doses of steroids she used to try to control the disease. Years went by and I became a nurse when I grew up. I still did not get much more of a clear explanation for what Lupus was or what effects it had on a person's body. You never heard much about. It was like it was a mystery disease or something. The Lupus still remains a mystery for many. Today I want to inform you. I formerly introduce you to Lupus... 48

Lupus is an immune system disease that cold or stress) affects 1.5 million people in the U.S.  Anemia People of African, Asian and Native  Blood Clots American decent are more likely to get Lupus then Caucasians. 90% of people Though the exact cause of Lupus is undiagnosed with Lupus are women. Although the disease is widely spread it is still not well known. In Lupus the immune system inappropriately attacks tissues in various parts of the body leading to tissue damage and illness. The disease can affect any part of the body. Many experience skin, joint, kidney, heart and blood problems as a result of Lupus. Some of the common side effects of Lupus are:        

100 Ways to Build Wealth: Part 3 By: Clifton Cook

This segment represents the last and final article in my "100 ways to build wealth series." We started with the fundamentals to help those who felt overwhelmed by the idea of controlling their financial destiny. We built a foundation based on the idea that when you finally get serious about saving, the basics will get you far. Not sweating the investment mistakes that may happen on the front end frees you from the paralyzing feeling that new investors tend to have. The idea of spending less to enjoy it more was introduced which essentially means you have to reevaluate what things really give you the most joy. Doing so will free up money that can be put to work to help build the foundation of your financial future. Lying that foundation means you start the saving process young as possible and going with a ROTH investment gets you totally free tax withdrawals in retirement.

Now that you have started the retirement savings process you have to make sure you do not leave money on the table that your employer is offering in the form of matching dollars in an employer sponsored 401K. You do so by remembering that 88% of 401K plans set initial default contributions below 6%, which in most cases is below the amount required to get the employer matching dollars. As you progress in your professional endeavor and move on to home ownership, focus on purchasing the smallest house in the best neighborhood. This will position you to take full advantage of rising home prices and safeguard you against the possibility of deflated home values. Remember to define your goals as you mature during your investment journey. Refining your goals mean you cast the widest net to capture profitable yields.

54

You do so by developing an investment portfolio that includes a foreign stock fund, U.S. stock market index fund and Bond market index fund. You can attempt to assist your dependent child with secondary education after leveraging your cash to build your retirement nest egg. Just keep in mind, the average dependent child has a much longer time horizon to pay back any debt related to education expenses.

Some locations that happen to fit this description are as follows; Sharon Mass., Louisville Colo., Mason Ohio, West Goshen, Pa. and Columbus/Elliot City MD. Closing out your financial building process should always conclude with efforts to expand your education. The internet represents an ever changing world that is packed with data. Determining Your Ideal Eyebrow Shape By: Denetra Key

So many shapes, sizes and methods! Ladies I know it is very trying to determine what your perfect eyebrow shape is and also to keep them up once you’ve finally gotten them right. We spend tireless amounts of time and money trying to get these small patches of hair above our eyes to compliment our face. I for one know a bad pair of eyebrows can mess up your whole look. Some of us draw them on, we shave them, we wax them, we get them stringed... but one mess up can lead to weeks of embarrassment. Here are some tips to help you get the perfect eyebrows.

1)Determine where your inner brow should end. Hold a straight edge, such as an eyebrow pencil or a ruler, vertically in front of your face. 

Line it up so that it touches the outermost of edge your nose and the inside of your eye. This line will determine where your eyebrow should start. 

Mark that spot with an eyebrow pencil. Repeat for the other eye. 

65

2) Determine where your arch should peak. Angle the straight edge so that it lines up with the outermost edge of your nose and the outermost edge of your iris. 

It's very important that you look straight ahead — both your face and your eyes should be looking directly forward at the mirror. 

Wherever the line intersects your eyebrow is where the peak of your arch should begin at the top border of the eyebrow. 

Mark that spot with your eyebrow pencil.

Repeat for the other eye.

3) Determine where your outer brow should end. 

Angle the straight edge further so that it touches the outermost edge of your nose and also passes along the outermost edge of your eye.

This tells you where the eyebrow should end. Mark this point with your eyebrow pencil. 

Repeat with the other eye.

66

*An Additional Note* Consider your face shape. 

Certain brows better compliment specific face shapes.

To minimize the curve of a round face, direct the outer third of the brow towards the top of the ear.  If the face is square, direct it toward the middle of the ear. This helps balance the face.  If the face is long, keep the brow more straight across, directing it above the ear.  An oval face already looks balanced, but to enhance this harmony, you can direct the outer third towards the ear lobe.

Fashion: The Art of Color By: Cesar Sosa

What is your favorite color? We all have favorite colors, I love purple. But the truth is, your favorite color may not be what looks best on you. Your hair, eyes and skin tone all play a part in selecting colors that belong in your closet. In this section I will explain how to use colors to highlight the parts of your body you love and camouflage the ones you don't. I will also tell you what colors go with what. Black and White Technically, black and white aren't really colors (even though many people call them colors). Black is the absence of color while white, is the sum of all the color of light. If you have lighter skin and you want to wear alot of beige, make sure you throw in an accent color to add a pop of life to your overall look. Pastels: Pastels are lighter shades of basic colors: Baby pink, light blue, lavender, pale yellow, and mint green. Pastels work well with navy blue, kelly green and white. “I LOVE YOU” DECODED: FIVE SIGNS OF A MAN’S LOVE FOR YOU By: Kimberley Jasper

Some men don’t know how to say it, and some men have never said it to a woman who wasn’t blood related, but that doesn’t mean that a man doesn’t love you or isn’t passionately in love with you. Society conditions men to behave a certain way, that way being to withhold love while simultaneously demanding it. Or simply neglect to teach them to express it. Because of this, some men aren’t always able to verbally express how they feel about you, but many show it in a number of other ways. Here are just a few… 89

1. HIS KISS Be it the soft forehead peck or the passionate knee-knocking lip-lock, the way a man kisses you tells you a great deal about him and how he feels about you. You can be sure of his love by the way he embraces you each time he kisses

you, and if he seems to anticipate each kiss that you two share. When a man draws you in completely, chest-to-chest or head-to-chest, with his arms folded around you, cradling you like you’re something precious, you can feel that affection. It’s within reason to assume that he truly adores you; because men usually reserve that level of intimacy only for women who they care deeply about. 90

2. HE’S IN CONSTANT CONTACT He texts you to say, “Ugh. This grocery store line is too long” or “I have this song stuck in my head…do you like that song?” He makes the effort to express to you that he misses you or that he needs you, through phone calls, messages, status updates, tweets or by whatever means…that’s a proclamation of genuine affection. He wants you to know that he’s thinking of you, so he finds a way to make that happen. He thinks talking to you makes even the

most mundane things in life entertaining and enjoyable. That’s affection for you, no doubt.

91

3. MAKING CHANGES FOR YOU Men, by far, are not perfect creatures, but when they are trying to improve in order to become better boyfriends, lovers or counterparts, it’s usually love that drives those intentions. When he’ll agree to go dancing or do other new

things that he’s never been open to trying before, or better yet, tries to be more open period, then he cares for you. Compromise is a beautiful and loving thing. He’s stopped eating red meat, or even exercises more often. First of all, he values you and what you stand for, so mimicking your habits is a good idea to him. He also loves you so much that you make him want to be a better person. 92

4. HE BECOMES MR. FIXIT Any time your guy is over, he is investigating every nook and cranny of whatever piece of furniture, appliance or squeaky door he is standing in front of. He wants to make sure everything works properly, that you have the most efficient model and so on. He’s hands on with car repairs, even if he can’t fix it himself, he will be the one to contact someone who can. Oil changes, flat tires, landscaping, air filters, garbage disposal, whatever breaks, he’ll make

sure it’s fixed. He won’t feel like an errand boy if you need him to do something, he will gladly volunteer because he cares about you and wants everything to go as smoothly as possible in your life.

93

5. HE TELLS EVERYONE ABOUT YOU You two are hanging out together, watching movies…or doing whatever, and his phone rings. No matter who’s on the other end of the line, he announces to the person that’s he’s hanging out with you by name and making it known that you’re an important part of his life. If everyone in his social circle, as well as his family, knows who you are or at least knows about you, then there’s no doubt that he talks about you quite a bit. Do all of his friends know about your accomplishments before you get the chance to tell them? Do they already know about everything you and your guy did last week before you start the story? That’s a sure sign that the man you’re with is into you. 94

SEXUAL EXPRESSIONS Wi th Des zion

I've been talking to a long time friend of mine who I've known for over twenty eight years. We've been dating a little over four months now and I love him to death. However, he is in a very complicated situation. I have begun to develop strong feelings for him, however, my patience has grown very thin because I feel like I am in limbo in regards to where we stand. Some may think four months is too soon to commit to someone but I feel that it's more than enough time especially considering the fact that we've been friends for so long. He has five children and I don't have any yet. I have obtained my BA in communication arts, and I will be graduating in February with my MBA in marketing. I own my own business and I am ready to start a family. I gave him an ultimatum today refusing any calls or text until he makes a decision on what he wants to do. My brother told me regardless of his situation, if he really wanted to be with me and if he was serious he would drop everything and make it work. To the men, is he right? Or do you think he is saying that because as a brother looking at his situation, he wants someone else for me? Or am I being too impatient with him? 96

Girl, please. Listen here. First, just because YOU'RE ready for a relationship, doesn't mean that he is, even if you've been friends all this time. You and he are entering different territory and he may need more time than you. I mean, what's his complicated situation? If it has anything to do with his children(s') mothers, you really don't want to be in the middle of that mess, do you? When a man tells you about himself, listen to him! Your education and all that is an excellent coup but has nothing to do with a relationship status. You have what you want and are ready to move on to the next phase of your life: it's really unfair to demand that he move on your time scale. Ultimatums USUALLY DON'T WORK with men, especially if you already knew about him having “a complicated situation. You two are not on the same page right now. You two need to talk and communicate better about what you BOTH want out of this. All I'm hearing are your demands. A relationship involves two people, perhaps you need to consider the other party more before making suck drastic decisions. You might lose out on a great guy. You might realize he's really not the one for you. But either way, throwing a demand at him isn't the way to communicate effectively. <3 Desion

Michael Sam: Making the Cut By: Lonnie Hall

By now, I'm sure you have heard of Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL. He went to the St. Louis Ram's as the 249th pick in the 7th round and he got more attention than other notable players. Usually, the most popular 7th round draftee is Mr. Irrelevant because he's picked last. He usually gets rewarded with a free trip to Disney World and is never heard of again. But this year, Mr. Irrelevant was upstaged by the sexuality of Michael Sam who should have never been spoken of. Michael Sam is a 260lb defensive end from the University of Missouri who was the 2013 SEC player of the year. He had an excellent college career. Every year there are many young men who work and train hard to

reach the NFL. Their stories may differ, some are more heartfelt than others, some paths appear more difficult than others. But, each of these men have relentlessly chased their dreams of playing in the National 110

12 Things Women Wish We Would Understand‌ By: Richarh Aswanu

1) It doesn't matter how handsome we are or how good we hit the spot. Eventually she's gonna fake an orgasm to get you off of her.

2) She doesn't love you or who you are. She loves you for who you could be. Why else is she constantly trying to change you? 118

3) Keeping anything from them is a cardinal sin. They need to know everything. Who, what, why, where and when.

4) Be careful when adhering to number 3. All information will be used against you. If you cheated in past relationships, keep it to yourself. She will never trust you. 119

5) If she flirt with other men in front of you and picks fights with you over nothing - she doesn't want to be with you anymore.

6) You are supposed to take her side -always. No matter what.

120

7) If you've been messing around for more than a few months and she hasn't stalked you or told you she loves you -she doesn't.

8) She cares what her friends think of you. Who else do you think has such a great impact on the tide of y’alls relationship?

121

9) You don't have to understand her obsession with shoes. You just have to accept it.

10) If you want to try something a lil kinky you don't have to be such a bitch about it. Be a man and take control.

122

11) that she notices the way you suck the meat off of BBQ chicken wings. So, it pisses her off when you don't put that same enthusiasm into oral sex.

12) they want to know about our ex's, just enough to assure them that they are better than she is -at everything.

VMA Wrap Up By: Torrie Essex

All and All; the VMA's were alright. It launched with a decent and energetic performance by up and coming pop star Arianna Grande. I can't remember the name of the song because I was focusing on how sexy she is. And yes her age has been confirmed so I no longer fell like a pedophile for being attracted to her. At first I wasn't sure if it was appropriate for me to be looking at her like that.

Jay Ferrell as the host was a baaad move. Dude was corny. On to Nicki Minaj; Nicki set a nice tone with her uptempo hit Anaconda and her sexy, borderline inappropriate performance. That's just the father in me speaking. I wouldn't allow my 12 year old daughter to watch but personally, I enjoyed it. I was like; "Damn Nicki Nicki Nicki..." I that they are far too old for the Dumb

prayed to the heavens above as she had a slight wardrobe malfunction when she hit the stage to perform "Bang Bang" with Jessie J and Arianna Grande. I was praying for her dress to swing open. The first Moon Man award of the night went to Katy Perry featuring Juicy J -Dark Horse for best female video. I'm sorry but I feel like Iggy Azalea's Clueless inspired video for "Fancy" should have won. I mean Clueless? Classic. She's been riding the top of the charts for a while now. I'm just saying -she's hotter. Taylor Swift, she was the night's next performer. Let me just go on record to say this real quick; "Taylor stop dancing to other people's performances, sweetheart, you cannot dance." Now on to her performance. Where was Kanye

West when you needed him? That's when he should have interrupted her. Best male video went to Ed Sheeran for the Pharrell assisted "Sing". Please tell Jeff Bridges and Jim Carey and Dumber shit. They were trying too hard to connect, it was forced and unnatural. Best Pop Video goes to Adriana featuring Iggy Azalea -Problem. Kim Kardashian West was a presenter. I just have to say this, and I'll accept whatever consequences comes behind it. Kim was wearing some straight up bullshit. I think North West picked that outfit out for her, or she must just feel like she can wear whatever. I'm pretty sure Cesar has much to say. Sam Smith put on a great perfor

mance with "Stay. "Common was a presenter. I don't like to hear Common speak. He puts so much conviction and authority in what he says; he makes me want to go turn myself in. I apologized to the person next to me and I hadn't even done anything wrong. Usher and Nicki gave a good performance. Usher better stick to singing and dancing because whatever he was doing before he actually started singing was not attractive. Real Talk, homeboy was serious. Plus he had that hot ass jacket on. Just one song and he was sweating like he done an entire 90 minute set. That's dedication. Yeah man!

Best Rock Video, Lorde with Royals. Personally, Jenny from the block gets the best dressed award. I know it wasn't a category but damn, she was killin' em in that dress. The younger women need to take note. The rest of the performances were alright. I wish Iggy would have done fancy instead of Black Widow. But I get it. That's the only way Rita Ora could shine since she couldn't perform her own song. Her ex made sure of that, at least she knows someone will "Let You Down." Video of the year; Miley Cyrus, Wrecking Ball. She just showed every 134

one how to get it. Get naked. I mean she was up against some monster video's. BeyoncĂŠ' -Drunk in Love, Pharrell Happy, Iggy -Fancy. Naked has been the theme this year. Naked and Afraid and Naked Dating. Get Naked! But she did support a god cause with her win. It's hard to judge where a person is truly coming from. But I guess in that situation you are going to get much media attention whether you did it for the cause or for more publicity. BeyoncĂŠ' closed the show. Killed

it! The Michael Jackson Vanguard Music Award. She is truly the greatest performer of our time. She did a whole concert. She had to go last. Who could come after that? I thought it was a great touch to have her husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy present her with the award. Shut the haters up. I think all in all. The VMA's showed the voices of the young generation. Be who you are, embrace it and show the world. Be the best you can be and the love will follow.

Red’s Corner By: Rodney Carter

Hello readers welcome to Red’s Corner where we tell the truth nothing in between. Today we are discussing Katt Williams. Katt says that Suge Knight was not the intended target during the shooting that occurred in the West Hollywood club. Really! How would Katt Williams know who was, is, or should have been. You know Katt Williams is quick to say it was a misunderstanding. In July of 2014 Katt Williams pulled a gun out on a hackler at a comedy club. Spectators said that the man said Katt Williams was shorter than he thought. Katt Williams then pulled the gun out, but realized that the man was not the intended target. Thou Katt Williams is going thru a lot of legal issues he still was able to land a gig with HBO directed by Spike Lee. Let’s hope that this gets Katt Williams on the right track. Remember Katt life is too short. Why you pull out that gun Katt I said life is to short I didn’t say you. @29 pimp in distress Katt its just a misunderstanding. Go on Katt stop playing. I had a fan follow me to a few shows in various states. Old cat. Great dude. He had a glass eye, so he usually sat up front. This time, he sat in the back. I noticed on stage and asked him from the stage, "Why you sittin' in the back, OG?" He took his eye out and rolled it on the floor towards the stage. I was like, "WTF! Was that your eye?" He said, "Yeah. I wanted to see the show in 3D this time!" #trueStory~ Amaru 144

It Ain't Hard to Tell By: Larrod Evans

Every now and then, a new artist enters the game giving us gasping Hip-Hop heads CPR. Picture yourself in your whip station surfing while shaking your heads in disgust towards the typical watered down Hip-Hop that plagues our musical outlets. Then bam, it hits you! A breath of fresh air in the form of a song that makes you confess; "Yeah, he's the truth." The current generation has its J. Cole, Lil Wayne, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and a few others, but in 1993, my dose was Nas. My man Loushen (AKA "DJ LouieLou") started one snowy school day in November by hyping up this unknown MC named Nas; "Yo, you think BIG is nice, wait til you hear this kid...and he's killin them Wu cats!" Now Lou was a known weed head, but that day we thought he was drunk, dusted, coked up or all

the above! Nicer than the Wu? C'mon. Lou was always doing this to us. He always had his hands on the hottest new records. But truth be told, he usually was right. So, here we are dreading the school day in anticipation of this dude named Nas who was supposedly the savior to Hip-Hop. Boom, 2:45 hit and it was on. We got to Lou's spot in a flash and the L's were lit quicker than usual. At the time, we didn't know that he had the whole album. But when we heard; "Straight from the dungeons of rap where fake niggas don't make it back..." coupled with Premo's ill piano loop we bugged. We would've played "New York State of mind" until the sunset. "I'm like Scarface sniffin cocaine holdin the M16/ see with the pen I'm extreme." It's like you could literally see everything Nas spit. Before the joint ended, I honestly had to agree with Lou. He just took you on a trip with his wordplay. Through the smoke I could see that everybody in that small cramped room was in the same place.

Shan and the legendary Juice Crew. Nas was more than ready to walk in his hoods footsteps. Three years earlier, the underground took notice of a cocky teenager spittin controversial bars on Main Source's "Live at the BBQ." Soon after, the streets were craving an album which led to Nas being signed to MC Serch's searchlight publishing in hopes of landing a record deal. In the process, Nas was met with much criticism from some of the industries heavyweights concerning his commercial appeal. He was being compared to Kool G Rap (ironically a queens bridge native), but the skepticism only fueled his passion. A short time later, Sony Music A&R Faith Newman-Orbach signed Nas to Columbia records and the table was set. Columbia assembled some of New York's dopest beat makers such as; Pete Rock, Large Professor, DJ Premiere and L.E.S. to provide the backdrop to the instant classic Illmatic. Every joint on there was like a clip from a movie. You could smell the blunt smoke, hear the gunfire and feel the concrete beneath the scuffed up timbs on Nas' feet.

The son of Olu-Dara, Nas was wise beyond his years as a kid outta the Queensbridge projects which is home to many greats such as; Marly Marl, MC My crew and I could relate to Illmatic 148

because we talked, walked and looked like Nas. We rocked fatigues, Guess and Columbia Ski Jackets too. We were still teenagers and could trade war stories as fluidy as a Vietnam vet. Nas' ten song debut was a reflection of our wild lifestyle. From "The World is Yours", to "Halftime", to my favorite cut on the album, "Life's a Bitch"; Nas set a new standard for lyricism. "My mic check is life or death, breathin a snipers breath/ I exhale the yellow smoke of buddha through righteous steps." However the critics were right, but only in a sense. Illmatic didn't appeal to the masses and only sold a mere 330,000 copies. Back

then, a gold album (5000,000 copies) was equivalent to going platinum in today's market. Still, it didn't matter; Nas was exhalted and hailed as a Messiahlike figure destined to save Hip-Hop. In a way he did...in New York at least. Throughout the history of Hip-Hop, each coast has depended on its own artists to carry the weight and Nas was destined to be a major contributor to New York's rich history of spitters. Two years later in 1996, Nas released the controversial and highly criticized, "It Was Written." The bulk of the back

lash derived from the album's subject matter and it was speculated Nas adopted a persona to boost album sales. Gators, fly suits, cocaine talk and mafia references were a far cry from the socially conscious street disciple that fans raved about on Illmatic. It didn't help matters none that he was in ca-

To this day I'm still torn between which album is my favorite; "Illmatic" or "It was Written." In my personal opinion, it seems as if the critics just wanted something to talk

about and Nas further fueled the controversy when he signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. After the release of The Firm's album, an extensive beef with Cormega, and a successful appearance in Belly which he co-wrote with I didn't listen to the critics. The album Hype Williams, word on the streets was; was amazing to say the least. "If I Ruled "Nas is falling off." the World" featuring Lauryn Hill jumped the summer off, it was crazy! copped "Nastradamus" and "QB's Finest." And when he made his so-called comeback in 2001 with "Stillmatic" in the midst of the Jay-Z beef, I was on the frontline. The highly publicized feud was won by Nas and catapulted him once again to the forefront of HipHop. "Ether", the greatest battle record of all time solidified his skills and quieted the doubtful whispers. He used the momentum of his victory over Jay-Z to reclaim his title as "King of New York." Now, here we are in 2014 and it seems like it was just yesterday when I first heard this legendary MC. I can still see the faces of astonishment in that jam packed, smoked filled listening session years ago. Throughout my 35 years here on this earth, I've heard alot of music. Through all the records, tapes, CD's and downloads, I still put Nas above the rest. From his storytelling, to the concepts like "Rewind" and "Book of Rhymes", to his laid back, yet subtly commanding approach, he has the whole package. No matter who you put in the top 5, Nas' name must be included - it's a no brainer. Compare his catalog and influence with any MC on your list, then you'll see why..."Nas' raps should be locked in a cell/ it ain't hard to tell."

What’s Goin On Today This Month By: Talia Rice

Female MCs Can there be more than one queen of rap on the throne? The way these females are acting I highly doubt it. There are a lot of talented female emcees that can rock the top together but refuses to play nice. We have always been in competition with each other in all aspects of life. Social media does not help the beefing either, it just add fuel to

the flame. It has me asking, can we all just get along? Lil Kim vs. Nicki Minaj The most recent beef is between rappers Nicki and Lil Kim. Lil Kim reigned in her day. With explicit lyrics she raised the bar and made women not be ashamed of their sexuality and to come hard on the mic. A few circumstances caused her to go

156

to prison. Like the saying goes, there is always someone ready to take your spot as soon as you slip up and that it did. I will admit when I heard Nicki Minaj on her mixtape I heard the similarities between Nicki and Lil Kim. I still banged her music in my truck because she came hard with it. Suddenly people started to take notice. Pint size Lil Kim was not feeling it. It was not a form of flattery in her eyes. Nicki never acknowledged the influence Lil Kim had on her career. Because of that, Lil Kim is making it her mission to demolish Nicki's career. She has been releasing not complete albums but diss tracks all about Nicki Minaj. She did radio interviews about her and has attacked anybody who rides with Nicki. The more Kim go at her the hotter Nicki becomes. Personally Kim needs to come to the realization that she needs to take several seats and let someone else reign. She definitely should not hold her breath while waiting for an acknowledgement, it just won't happen.

Iggy Azalea vs Nicki Minaj and Azalea Banks This is one beef that works for the white rapper. Rapper T.I. signed this young talent immediately and has put her on to the hip hop scene here in America. Since getting on the freshman cover on XXL magazine subpar rapper Azalea has been gunning for Iggy. She does not understand why this white girl is getting fame and not her. Clearly she has not heard her own whack music. T.I. even became a target of her wrath but he pumped her breaks real good. Iggy seemed unfazed by the one sided beef and remains to focus on her hustle. Now Nicki Minaj is accusing Iggy of not writing her own lyrics. T.I. stepped in and claims she writes all of her ish. The accusation came right after a prestigious magazine coined Iggy as the new face of rap. Do these girls know that Iggy did not dub herself that but different music outlets did? Again Iggy is too busy making money to respond to child's play.

157

My point is why can't female artists focus on their skills as hard as they try to stir up trouble? Would we respond like this if it were men? It does appear unladylike. Ride or Die Chick or Crazy in Love?

rapper claiming to want or need one or telling us women how to become one. She is the one who holds him down, go to war for him, put money on his books, rob another for him and be that blunt that calms him down

'I'll ride for you, Die for you, Do anything you want me to cause I'm your down ass chick' Ja Rule f/Ashanti Remember when the term ride or die chick was coined in the hip hop community? Every song just about had a 158

after he just got done dealing with the hood. All while cooking him dinner butt ass naked rocking six inch stilettoes! There is nothing wrong with pleasing your man ladies as long as the love is reciprocated. Somewhere down the line the definition of the ride or die chick has become blurred. Behaviors that are unacceptable are being tolerated, mainly cheating. Trina, Amber Rose, Ciara and even BeyoncĂŠ, though beautiful and successful have been cheated on. Which

goes to show you even the most beautiful women in the world cannot make a dog learn good behavior. But why in the hell those same women are taking these men back after they blatantly cheated on them? Are they that thirsty for a warm body at night? To be that ride or die? It is bad enough to deal with a cheating man but when it is in public it is worse. Take Ciara for example. She thought she was different than Future's other baby mamas (yes plural) but she

159

found out real quick that she was not. He took a pic with his stylist, both in an inappropriate position. Ciara immediately kicked him out but recently moved him back in. All to have a warm body at night. What about Karrueche? She has become used to being second to Rihanna. Chris posted a pic of her bare ass and she dumped him. But a day ago she was spotted walking out of the courthouse in step with her disrespectful boo and a Kool-Aid smile on her lips as though ish is all good. If that is what I

have to endure just to get that label, I'll pass. I enjoy a drama free life. Failed System Earlier this year a video was released via TMZ. It showed NFL player Ray Rice pulling his girl out of an elevator at a hotel. It was clear that she was unconscious. He admitted to punching her moments before knocking her out. Although there were no audio a person could clearly see Rice had no urgency to get help for her. To slap her once again the commissioner of

160

the NFL only suspended him for two games. That is as bad as the act itself. It tells females that they are not worthy enough to bench or fire the football player. It is 2014 and yet we still treat the abused as an inconvenience rather than a victim. Women are not equals to men period. No matter how many degrees we have earned, CEO positions we have taken we are not important. We have been tricked to wear rose col-

ored glasses that makes equality appear closer than we think similar to what is on the side view mirror. Women have lost the drive to fight just like the feminists from back in the day. Just because you cannot physically see a problem does not mean there is none. Until we say enough is enough these athletes will continue to get their hands smacked for this behavior.

Police Brutality A murder in the city of Ferguson had me compare it to a war going on in a third world country. Eighteen year old Mike Brown was viciously murdered in broad daylight by a white police officer. A blanket of rage covered the predominately black city, with good reason. However I believe how we went about the situation was all wrong. Rioting is not the answer, all that did was make us look stupid. Curfew was enforced and school was delayed be-

cause of it all. Mike did not deserve that fate but fighting and looting is not what we owe this boy. And how are we going to become rageful when a white man murders one of our own when we do it on the regular? We should display that same anger toward our own and say enough is enough! Otherwise we are fighting for nothing! Rest in heaven Mike Brown!

Interview with

G.A.G.E.: A New Caliber of Talent By: Richarh Aswanu

One of our main intentions here at Urban Image is to seek out new talent and share it with the rest of the world. In our quest, it’s not that often that we come across an artist who really makes us wonder; “Why ain’t this cat signed?” In the wake of the Mike Brown situation, I heard what I feel is the only song that was written from the heart and truly captures the emotion and frustration of not only the people of Ferguson, Missouri; but of the Black Community across the nation. Ladies and gentleman, I’m proud to introduce you too G.A.G.E. Richarh: What up Bruh, what's going down wit cha?

G.A.G.E.: Nothing much just working hard tryna get my message heard! Richarh: I heard the song on Russ Parr's Morning show and I was floored. I got chills homie. The lyricism, the production, it was cold. It was cinematic and journalistic.

to put you out. Due to a lot of political behind the scenes stuff; I was never put out as an artist but I have worked with just about every big name in the industry so the industry knows me, but the average everyday listeners didn't get the opportunity to hear my harsh delivery and content that I put in every song that I do! But after my departure from that label in 07 I have done a lot of business with Dre. But now that you guys do know me, you can follow me on twitter

and Instagram @gagepromo to stay updated on all of my new Material. Richarh: What were your initial thoughts when you first heard that Mike Brown was brutally murdered by a police officer? G.A.G.E.: The first thing that came to mind; I felt pain and anger, frustration and hostility because this is an ongoing problem in our society that has been taking place for over 60 years and

166

it has to stop, this cop MUST be prosecuted in the court of law or the people will start prosecuting the only way we know how, and that's taking it to the streets!

G.A.G.E.: The only thing that will change this now is as I said to start charging the officers with the crimes they are committing, if we keep letting them go free they will

Richarh: Tell me about your own percontinue to do whatever the FUCK they sonal experience with law enforcement. want! G.A.G.E.: I have been dealing with police all my life growing up in the inner city from random jump outs to even swung on by police sticks and weapons. I moved to Atlanta years ago to escape all of that, and since; it has even become worse!

Richarh: Hey man, thanks for the interview. Thanks for your song, you captured the essence of our struggle. Don't be a stranger to Urban Image. Hit us up and keep us posted on your moves. Is there anything you want to say before we go?

G.A.G.E.: I just want to Richarh: Are there any thank everyone that has tensions between the been supporting the "I am police and the people of Philly? Mike Brown" song, and to look forward to seeing the video on WorldStar in the G.A.G.E.: I haven't lived in Philly for next week or two, only we as a people close to 9 years but every time I go to visit it is still the same and I have close can stand up to bring real content and substance back to the music!!! I will go to 7 family members incarcerated in into production on my first studio album Philadelphia due to troubles with city next month titled "I Am Greatness", so and police corruption some serving over look forward to that in the early future. 100yr sentences!
