A CHECKLIST SPONSORED BY ELL A BELL A .......................................................... 01 | 1ST TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES
□ Bella Band by Ingrid & Isabel (will
help you during transition phase and allow you to wear your regular pants as long as you can get them over your hips).
□ Everyday Cami by Ingrid & Isabel ( You can get away with most of your regular tops for now but if you find they are getting a little short on you, this cami will help).
02 | 2ND TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES
CASUAL WEAR: □ Jeans - skinny or boot cut. One good
□ Casual/Yoga style pants - look for a
soft knit fabric with a band that you can roll under or over belly.
BUSINESS WEAR:
□ Solid color basic ruched tops - Isa-
bella Oliver offers a variety of colors in short or long sleeves, scoop or V-neck and they are very reasonable in price for the quality. Get a few colors to go under your blazers and a basic black one that you can dress up with your favorite jewelry.
□ Basic
Pencil skirt - Boob makes a fantastic one called “Once-On-NeverOff Skirt”
pair of designer jeans is worth the investment as you will continue wearing long after having baby and you look and feel great during pregnancy).
□ Dress pants - you’ll need at least two
□ Leggings - over or under belly, crop
□ Maternity Tights and Pantyhose - if
or full-length, black or colored. Wise to stock up early as you will love the comfort!
□ Tunics - to wear with your comfortable leggings. Don’t be afraid to add some color or prints!
□ Basic tees - short or long sleeve depending on the season. A few solid colors but again prints can be fun too!
□ Ruched Tee

to three pair. Black for sure and charcoal is great too as it won’t look like you’re wearing the same pants every day.
you like to wear tall boots, tights will last longer than pantyhose.
□ Dresses
- One little black dress for sure! Dresses are easy because it’s “one” piece of clothing so get a few and make dressing in the morning an easy task.
□ Cardigan or Blazer - depending on your office dress code.
□
Designer jeans for casual Friday - look for a dark wash with little or no distress.
.......................................................... 03 | 3RD TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES Keep in mind that maternity clothes are designed to be worn thru your entire pregnancy. They are made to expand with your growing belly so unless you are expecting twins or have put on a lot of extra weight you should be able to continue with your same wardrobe even in your third trimester. If expecting twins, you may want to purchase clothing in stages or look for extra-long tops and dresses that are cut longer in the front.
□ Ruched Tank by Ingrid & Isabel lets you show off your belly and then lets your recovering belly hide under some ruching.
□ Nursing bras - you should have at
least one or two before you give birth. Look for Bravado Body Silk or Bliss bra that comes with an extender. Both these bras can be worn during pregnancy and have no underwire.Once your nursing is well established, then you can shop for a specific size bra.
□ Nursing Tank tops - some styles offer ruching on the sides which allows you to wear during and after. Look for Ripe, Cantaloop, Glamourmom or Bravado brands.
□ Nursing
Nightie - most maternity lingerie is made to wear during pregnancy and for nursing later. Look for Cake Lingerie or Belabumbum for great quality. FIND ALL OF YOUR FABULOUS MATERNITY STYLE ESSENTIALS AT WWW.ELLABELLA.CA.

CPR FOR
infants & children
PARENTING ESSENTIALS
..................................
WRITTEN BY | SARAH CASPER
PHOTOS COURTESY OF | OBLEEK PHOTOGRAPHY AND JANICE CROZE PHOTOGRAPHY (FACING PAGE)
Even with the best prevention, emergencies can still occur. Knowing what to do can save your child’s life. Immediate recognition of the need for First Aid, activation of EMS and early CPR are essential in trying to revive an infant who has gone unconscious and is not breathing. It can be difficult to differentiate between breathing and cardiac emergencies, the ultimate outcome means that we will treat them the same.
As a mother of a 1 year old boy and a St. John Ambulance First Aid and CPR Instructor I understand the importance of knowing what to do when things go wrong. As part of my profession I teach many parents what to do when emergencies arise. A person will greatly benefit from any CPR training, but as a new parent Infant CPR is a priceless skill to possess. Infants are little explorers and are constantly trying to discover their environment by grasping objects and placing them in their mouths, this exploration, although comical at times, can lead to serious emergencies. Common causes of breathing emergencies are choking, suffocation and drowning - all interfere with the infant’s ability to take in air.
► | EACH INCIDENT IS DIFFERENT BUT SOME STEPS YOU CAN TAKE ARE: ◘ Make sure the area is safe for you to be in ◘ Calling for help – attract attention to where you are if you are by yourself ◘ Assess responsiveness ◘ If the infant is unresponsive and not breathing, begin 2 minutes of CPR ◘ For an infant, place 2 fingertips on the breastbone just below the nipples ◘ Use 2 fingers to press down firmly on the breastbone ◘ Compress 30 times then give 2 small breaths ◘ After 2 minutes of CPR, take the infant with you to call 911, and follow dispatch directions It’s more than a cliché to say that CPR saves lives, but statistics show that it will most likely be one of your loved ones that benefit! Contact St. John Ambulance or Modern Mama today to find workshops and certification courses in your area.
► | STEPS TO ENSURE YOUR INFANT’S AIRWAY REMAINS CLEAR: ◘ ◘ ◘
Cut food into small pieces. Have your child play with age appropriate toys (no small or broken pieces), Check pacifiers and bottle nipples for cracked parts often (throw them away if they are!), ◘ Have the infant wearing a life jacket in the water and in watercrafts, ◘ Think of where and how you lay your child down, ◘ Keep plush toys, pillows and bumper pads out of cribs

PHOTOGRAPH your babe! AGES & STAGES YOU WANT TO CAPTURE
.......................................................... Janice Croze is a Vancouver family and children’s photographer. She photographs on location throughout the Lower Mainland and in studio in South Surrey. Janice@JaniceCrozePhotography.com
DON’T MISS DETAIL: Make sure to photograph four month olds as they take on tummy time, working so hard to hold up their heads and beaming with pride when they do.
► | SITTING PRETTY AND STUCK STILL | SIX TO SEVEN MONTHS OLD
Their baby wisps and curls will turn into pig tails and buzz cuts, and their chubby, wobbly legs will grow into lean, strong machines that power their first two wheelers. Every day of your child’s life holds a priceless opportunity to photograph them, to treasure and remember who they were for that brief moment in time. Here are just a few of those highlights you want to ensure you preserve forever.
► | A LITTLE SCRAWNY & A LOT SLEEPY | THE FIRST MONTH From their giant yawns to their tiny legs, the newborn stage is as adorable as it is fleeting. Most newborn photographers recommend photographing babies before they are 14 days old. However, if you missed the “deadline,” no worries. While after two weeks old it is more difficult to get photographs of your baby sound asleep and folded up in fetal positions, you still have time to capture that incredible newborn stage. DON’T MISS DETAIL: Oh, the yawns! Being a baby is hard work and newborns are in a rush to get from one nap to the next. Make sure you capture that so-sweet yawn that tells anyone watching it is time for baby to go back to sleep.
► | ALL BABY | THREE TO FOUR MONTHS OLD Once baby moves from newborn to infant, their body plumps up and they become even more interactive and fun. I love to photograph babies at this more alert and active stage. They are still young enough to capture their “newness,” but strong enough to steady their heads and engage with you.

www.modernmama.com | HAVING A BABY IN EDMONTON | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2013
It is a wonderful time when babies haven’t yet mastered crawling their way into trouble. Baby can get up on all fours, but is stuck in “neutral.” Just as moms appreciate those last few days of her baby “not on the move,” so do photographers! Scheduling a photo session with your photographer at six months old is a great idea. Many photographers have packages that include multiple photo sessions in your baby’s first year so you can capture your baby as a newborn, at six months and at one year old. DON’T MISS DETAIL: At this stage, everything goes in baby’s mouth – especially their hands and feet. Focus in on those flexible limbs and those delicious fingers and toes.
► | STANDING STRONG | NINE TO TWELVE MONTHS OLD From crawling, to standing, and even taking their first steps, babies approaching their first birthdays are ready to show off their skills – and flash you some smiles. DON’T MISS DETAIL: Me Ra Koh, photographer and author of “Your Baby in Pictures” published by Amphoto Books, reminds moms and dads to photograph those “chunky, adorable baby legs” before they magically slim down when baby starts walking and running.
► | GROWING UP SO FAST | EIGHTEEN MONTHS TO TWO YEARS OLD Your baby has morphed into a toddler who is perpetually on the move. While photographing this age can be exhausting, it is also rewarding. Soon your toddler will be off to preschool, so make sure you document those fleeting baby days before diapers are done and big kid beds move in. DON’T MISS DETAIL: Celebrate your busy toddler and their constant action. Take shots of them discovering and conquering the world around them. Be creative in getting their attention and enlist help!

► MODERN MAMA
WHO WE ARE: Modern Mama is about “getting moms out of the house”. Being a mom on maternity leave, a stay-at-home-mom, a working mom, a single mom; whether you have one child or five, the common thread is that it’s difficult to find time for yourself, and motherhood can feel isolating and overwhelming at times. We believe that although motherhood adds a new dimension to who you are and it changes many aspects of our daily lives, it can’t replace our old selves – meaning we still need fun, friendship and some ‘me-time’ in our lives. Modern Mama aims to help you get out and get that support, connecting you with other moms who might share the same interests, and at the same time, provide that much-needed ‘me-time’!
