03 | 3RD TRIMESTER MUST-HAVES Keep in mind that maternity clothes are designed to be worn thru your entire pregnancy. They are made to expand with your growing belly so unless you are expecting twins or have put on a lot of extra weight you should be able to continue with your same wardrobe even in your third trimester. If expecting twins, you may want to purchase clothing in stages or look for extra-long tops and dresses that are cut longer in the front.

7 TIPS FOR

introducing solids N U RT U R E V E R S U S N AT U R E

WRITTEN BY | CARLI SUSSMAN

...................................................... Are good eaters born or made? While a baby’s individual personality plays a role in how well he accepts new foods, the evidence increasingly points to nurture over nature when it comes to your child’s future eating habits. Here are some ways to help give your baby the best possible start with solids:

► | LET HIM EAT STEAK!

Health Canada’s most recent infant nutrition guidelines recommend offering ironrich foods – such as meat and egg yolk – for baby’s first foods.

► | INTRODUCE TEXTURES EARLY.

Exposing your infant to a variety of textures as early as possibly just might be the best insurance against future picky eating. But is it safe? The BC Ministry of Health recommends offering fork-mashed foods (as opposed to purées) from the age of six months onward, and Health Canada recommends that infants be eating “family foods,” served in soft and age-appropriate pieces, by the age of 12 months.

► | DON’T SHY AWAY FROM STRONG FLAVOURS

There exists a common misconception that infants prefer – or can only tolerate – bland foods. This simply isn’t so.

► | OFFER FINGER FOODS ALONGSIDE PURÉES

Children who learn to self-feed earlier feel more in control of their eating experiences and are more likely to develop positive associations with mealtimes. Allowing your baby to self-feed improves her physical skills, such as her sensory and motor development, and also respects her growing need to develop capability and autonomy.

► | CUT BACK ON MILK.

By the age of 12 months, your baby should be drinking a maximum of 500 to 600 mL of milk per day. Children who fill up on milk are less likely to be hungry for other foods.

► | FOCUS ON HABITS, NOT NUTRIENTS.

It’s easy to get caught up in manufacturer claims that those gummy fruits contain an amount of beet purée equivalent to “one serving of vegetables,” but are you really teaching your child to love beets – or are you teaching him to love gummy candies?

► | AVOID ALL-DAY SNACKING & GRAZING.

Feed your child three meals and two snacks daily. As the French say, “Hunger is the best sauce.”

CPR FOR

infants & children

PARENTING ESSENTIALS

..................................

WRITTEN BY | SARAH CASPER

PHOTOS COURTESY OF | IMAGES BY BETHANY AND JANICE CROZE PHOTOGRAPHY (FACING PAGE0

Even with the best prevention, emergencies can still occur. Knowing what to do can save your child’s life. Immediate recognition of the need for First Aid, activation of EMS and early CPR are essential in trying to revive an infant who has gone unconscious and is not breathing. It can be difficult to differentiate between breathing and cardiac emergencies, the ultimate outcome means that we will treat them the same.

As a mother of a 1 year old boy and a St. John Ambulance First Aid and CPR Instructor I understand the importance of knowing what to do when things go wrong. As part of my profession I teach many parents what to do when emergencies arise. A person will greatly benefit from any CPR training, but as a new parent Infant CPR is a priceless skill to possess. Infants are little explorers and are constantly trying to discover their environment by grasping objects and placing them in their mouths, this exploration, although comical at times, can lead to serious emergencies. Common causes of breathing emergencies are choking, suffocation and drowning - all interfere with the infant’s ability to take in air.

► | EACH INCIDENT IS DIFFERENT BUT SOME STEPS YOU CAN TAKE ARE: ◘ Make sure the area is safe for you to be in ◘ Calling for help – attract attention to where you are if you are by yourself ◘ Assess responsiveness ◘ If the infant is unresponsive and not breathing, begin 2 minutes of CPR ◘ For an infant, place 2 fingertips on the breastbone just below the nipples ◘ Use 2 fingers to press down firmly on the breastbone ◘ Compress 30 times then give 2 small breaths ◘ After 2 minutes of CPR, take the infant with you to call 911, and follow dispatch directions It’s more than a cliché to say that CPR saves lives, but statistics show that it will most likely be one of your loved ones that benefit! Contact St. John Ambulance or Modern Mama today to find workshops and certification courses in your area.

► | STEPS TO ENSURE YOUR INFANT’S AIRWAY REMAINS CLEAR: ◘ ◘ ◘

Cut food into small pieces. Have your child play with age appropriate toys (no small or broken pieces), Check pacifiers and bottle nipples for cracked parts often (throw them away if they are!), ◘ Have the infant wearing a life jacket in the water and in watercrafts, ◘ Think of where and how you lay your child down, ◘ Keep plush toys, pillows and bumper pads out of cribs

AVOIDING

post partum depression

AWARENESS IS ESSENTIAL

................................

WRITTEN BY | CONNIE PETERS

PHOTOS COURTESY OF | IMAGES BY BETHANY

► TALK WITH YOUR CAREGIVER AND FAMILY

members about your risks (family history of depression can increase your risk) before you give birth.

► TALK TO YOUR CAREGIVER or a therapist if you have anxiety or negative feelings about your pregnancy, childbirth, parenting or life in general.

► A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IS IMPORTANT in managing stress and anxiety.

Eating balanced meals, whole foods, exercise and lots of rest can improve your state of mind.

► LEARN TO SAY NO! Don’t overextend yourself and be sure to set your expectations low during the months surrounding birth (both before and after).

► TREAT YOURSELF to a massage, a night out, whatever you feel is relaxing to your spirit.

► SURROUND YOURSELF with a supportive network. Visit your local health unit after

the baby arrives, and find a moms group (visit our resource listings in this guide), or join a support group like La Leche League to connect with other moms.

► GET ACTIVE at local post-natal fitness offerings that encourage you to bring your

baby along with you. (We list plenty of options in our resource listings in this guide).

► ASK FOR HELP.

Don’t stay silent about stress or negative feelings.

The Postpartum Depression Awareness Society (ppda.ca) and your local Health Unit can provide support and be a resource. PPDA.ca

PREP your nest! G E T R E A DY TO B R I N G B A BY H O M E

.......................................................... ► | BABY’S ROOM Do you want baby close to your bedroom for convenience or far away for a sound barrier? If you have a choice, you’ll want to put some thought to this. Decorating is the fun part – but don’t go overboard! Start with the basics (crib, changing table, dresser, rocking chair) and then add in the items you love over time. And don’t forget the most important part: safety. You might want to think about replacing the baby’s bedroom door with a wooden screen door. It’ll keep pets and guests out, but keep you seeing and hearing the baby.

► | GEAR

PHOTO COURTESY OF | JANICE CROZE

..........................................................

Never mind the fancy stuff, a good old fashioned rocking chair will be relaxing for you and create a soothing motion for your baby at feeding time. Look for one that will become a useful and memorable piece of furniture in your home for years to come. And because you can’t be in all places at all times, be sure to purchase a dependable baby monitor. This is a huge comfort, especially during those first days at home with baby.

► | BABY PROOFING

Regardless of if you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, you’re going to need some equipment. If you’re bottle-feeding, you’ll need bottles and formulas. If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll want a breast pump and bottles so others can lend a hand in the feeding department. Don’t forget the nipple cream and phone number of a local breastfeeding support group.

► | GOOD EATS

If you don’t already own a digital camera, now would be a good time to buy one. Simple, durable and dependable trumps fancy and hard to operate. Once baby is hear, you’ll be overwhelmed by the photo ops…starting a few minutes after birth! Ask around and get some recommended reading or websites for baby care. Whether it’s a sniffle or rash, these resources are incredibly valuable!

32 •

www.modernmama.com | HAVING A BABY IN VANCOUVER | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2013

Remember: it doesn’t need to be done all at once. A newborn requires a different kind of baby proofing compared to a mobile crawler! Re-evaluate as your baby hits each new stage, but be sure to be baby-proofed before baby makes it through the door.

It’s easy to forget to feed yourself when you find yourself tending to your baby’s unknown eating schedule. Yes, there’s always take-out, but that takes its toll on your wallet and your health. If you start in the time leading up to baby’s arrival, you can fill your freezer with easy meals like casseroles, sauces and stews.

► | DIGITS Make a list of all of your important phone numbers. Program them into your mobile, but also post them near your home phone. Don’t forget the pediatrician, your family doctor, poison control, and any other support numbers.

PHOTOGRAPH your babe! AGES & STAGES YOU WANT TO CAPTURE

.......................................................... Janice Croze is a Vancouver family and children’s photographer. She photographs on location throughout the Lower Mainland and in studio in South Surrey. Janice@JaniceCrozePhotography.com

DON’T MISS DETAIL: Make sure to photograph four month olds as they take on tummy time, working so hard to hold up their heads and beaming with pride when they do.

► | SITTING PRETTY AND STUCK STILL | SIX TO SEVEN MONTHS OLD

Their baby wisps and curls will turn into pig tails and buzz cuts, and their chubby, wobbly legs will grow into lean, strong machines that power their first two wheelers. Every day of your child’s life holds a priceless opportunity to photograph them, to treasure and remember who they were for that brief moment in time. Here are just a few of those highlights you want to ensure you preserve forever.

► | A LITTLE SCRAWNY & A LOT SLEEPY | THE FIRST MONTH From their giant yawns to their tiny legs, the newborn stage is as adorable as it is fleeting. Most newborn photographers recommend photographing babies before they are 14 days old. However, if you missed the “deadline,” no worries. While after two weeks old it is more difficult to get photographs of your baby sound asleep and folded up in fetal positions, you still have time to capture that incredible newborn stage. DON’T MISS DETAIL: Oh, the yawns! Being a baby is hard work and newborns are in a rush to get from one nap to the next. Make sure you capture that so-sweet yawn that tells anyone watching it is time for baby to go back to sleep.

► | ALL BABY | THREE TO FOUR MONTHS OLD Once baby moves from newborn to infant, their body plumps up and they become even more interactive and fun. I love to photograph babies at this more alert and active stage. They are still young enough to capture their “newness,” but strong enough to steady their heads and engage with you.

26 •

www.modernmama.com | HAVING A BABY IN VANCOUVER | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2013

It is a wonderful time when babies haven’t yet mastered crawling their way into trouble. Baby can get up on all fours, but is stuck in “neutral.” Just as moms appreciate those last few days of her baby “not on the move,” so do photographers! Scheduling a photo session with your photographer at six months old is a great idea. Many photographers have packages that include multiple photo sessions in your baby’s first year so you can capture your baby as a newborn, at six months and at one year old. DON’T MISS DETAIL: At this stage, everything goes in baby’s mouth – especially their hands and feet. Focus in on those flexible limbs and those delicious fingers and toes.

► | STANDING STRONG | NINE TO TWELVE MONTHS OLD From crawling, to standing, and even taking their first steps, babies approaching their first birthdays are ready to show off their skills – and flash you some smiles. DON’T MISS DETAIL: Me Ra Koh, photographer and author of “Your Baby in Pictures” published by Amphoto Books, reminds moms and dads to photograph those “chunky, adorable baby legs” before they magically slim down when baby starts walking and running.

► | GROWING UP SO FAST | EIGHTEEN MONTHS TO TWO YEARS OLD Your baby has morphed into a toddler who is perpetually on the move. While photographing this age can be exhausting, it is also rewarding. Soon your toddler will be off to preschool, so make sure you document those fleeting baby days before diapers are done and big kid beds move in. DON’T MISS DETAIL: Celebrate your busy toddler and their constant action. Take shots of them discovering and conquering the world around them. Be creative in getting their attention and enlist help!

► MODERN MAMA

WHO WE ARE: Modern Mama is about “getting moms out of the house”. Being a mom on maternity leave, a stay-at-home-mom, a working mom, a single mom; whether you have one child or five, the common thread is that it’s difficult to find time for yourself, and motherhood can feel isolating and overwhelming at times.
