Gluten Free
Vancouver
BY BROOKE TAKHAR
I have had celiac disease for 20 years. Just a few years ago dining out was a risky proposition. Would the server understand what gluten-free was? Would the kitchen know how to avoid cross-contamination? Would I have to run home and be in pain for weeks because of an honest mistake? Needless to say I didn’t eat out a lot in order to minimise these risks. A lot changed in a short amount of time. In 2015 gluten free in my city is so common I can eat out at a wide variety of delightful restaurants and bakeries. Now that I have a 4 year old as a sidekick, I have become adept at collecting wonderful spots in Vancouver that can accommodate both my allergen requirements and the sticky, picky and impatient fingers of my sweet date. Here, in alphabetical order, are my favourite kid-friendly gluten free places to eat in Vancouver. Chains MILESTONES, EARLS, CACTUS CLUB CAFE, BOSTON PIZZA & RED ROBIN Various locations around Vancouver
If you’re downtown shopping with a set of rumbling bellies or need a pre-game meal to quiet a whiny kid, the great news is many major chains right in the heart of the city can accommodate a gluten free diet and a small voice that might just want a side of fries with ketchup. I have had safe and flavourful gluten free eating experiences at all the chains I’ve listed above. Crackle Crème CHINATOWN cracklecreme.com
Only in Vancouver would you find a wildly popular specialized crème brûlée dessert café open just a few days a week. Just go with it. Check their Facebook page for updated opening hours and be sure to bring friends so you can order more than one dessert. My daughter once quietly ate three bowls of their homemade ice cream, legs swinging merrily under her chair, while I tapped through the sugary crust of a
mango crème brûlée and caught up with friends. That’s what I call a perfect parenting-while-eating moment. Edible Canada Bistro GRANVILLE ISLAND ediblecanada.com
To be honest, I prefer to devour Edible Canada’s gluten free duck poutine all by myself, but I will share a fry or two with my kid if she asks nicely. After a morning exploring Granville Island, the impeccable service and beautifully curated menu of this warm little bistro is such a welcome way to spend your afternoon. I’ve blown out many a birthday candle there, and drag every out-of-towner into their warm, welcoming and delicious embrace. Float On Bakeshop & Cafe FRASER ST Floatonbakeshop.com
When you step into Float On, a dedicated gluten free bakery, it feels like your favourite friend has invited you to come get cozy in their living room. While your kids doodle down the hallway on the long chalkboards

and read classic Disney stories, you can enjoy every sip of your Elysian coffee and every bite of their fantastic flatbread. Don’t forget to grab two (or more) comfort cookies on the way out. You will NOT want to share their mashup masterpiece of chocolate, potato chips and pretzels with anyone. The Gluten Free Epicurean MOUNT PLEASANT glutenfreeepicurean.ca
The first time I tried their gluten free apple fritter, I nearly cried. It is so perfectly crispy, chewy, sweet and studded with just the right amount of apple chunks. When I was done, fingers smeared with glaze and belly full, I knew that the days of eating sub-standard gluten free food were over. This bright white space, fragrant with fresh baked goods, is wedged in a leafy corner of the Fraserhood. With a perfect little play area for kids to knock around in, you can eat that fritter in complete zen. You’ll want to take home a selection of their flaky sausage rolls, chewy over-sized cookies and clever artisanal crackers. Don’t forget to take a peek in their freezer. The chicken pot pie, jammed with giant chunks of chicken and veggies in a creamy sauce hidden under a buttery crust, is a main the whole family will love. Gyoza Bar & Ramen with dessert from Cartems Donuterie DOWNTOWN gyozabar.ca / cartems.com
Even if your kids aren’t super adventurous, they’ll eagerly accept a set of chopsticks and a warm bowl of noodles to conquer. Sure, you’ll need 27 napkins and a lot of patience, but that should buy you enough
time to enjoy your gluten free ramen (order without the noodles and with rice on the side). I highly recommend the seafood saffron bowl. It’s filling, satisfying and comforting from first bite to last slurp. Once you’ve finished your ramen, and the echoes of the staff’s friendly good-byes ring out, skip down the block for a donut from Cartems. Your kids can smash their faces against the glass case and choose their favourites. I recommend the gluten free chocolate donut with salted caramel glaze. It’s everything you want and need in four bites. Las Margaritas Restaurant KITSILLANO lasmargaritas.com
Any establishment that immediately slides complimentary warm homemade tortilla chips in front of your hungry faces gets all the love from me and my kid. This is uncomplicated hot and cheesy Mexican food on West 4th Ave with some great deck space if you can snag a table outside in the summer. Fun fact: your kid’s voice ceases to be so shrill when you’ve had a margarita (or two.) Lemonade Gluten Free Bakery CAMBIE ST lemonadebakery.ca
A welcome addition to Cambie Village, this sweet little joint will satisfy all your gluten free cravings. While you’re picking up a loaf of their “people won’t believe this is gluten free” quinoa bread, keep your little one’s mouth occupied with their campfire cupcake, topped with a glorious toasted marshmallow. A smart parent would grab one to be enjoyed later, after bedtime.

Panne Rizo Gluten Free Bakery KITSILANO pannerizo.com
I’ve been visiting this gluten free bakery tucked down on Cornwall Avenue for what feels like a lifetime. On a summer day there is nothing better than getting a few of their grilled paninis (with a hidden pickle) to go and taking them just down the block to be devoured on a soft blanket at Kits Beach. Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. MAIN STREET & KITSILANO rockymountainflatbread.ca
Pizza is a can’t lose option for kids. My favourite pizza joint has two locations in Vancouver. The one I frequent is on a busy strip of Main Street. A large open dining room beckons you in with the delicately perfumed air of yeast and herbs. A designated kid’s play area will keep little hands busy with pre-meal play time, so you can take your time perusing their delightful flavour combinations. (I highly recommend the apple chicken pizza.) Their gluten free crust is perfect – thick enough for that familiar necessary crunch, sturdy enough to handle your thick layer of flavourful toppings but still chewy and beautifully textured. Smak Food DOWNTOWN smakfastfood.com
As soon as you open Smak’s front door, the intoxicating scent of their innovative ingredients will have your taste buds
trembling with excitement. Their “healthy fast food” includes creative flavourful salads, blended juices perfect for sharing, oatmeal bowls, breakfast wraps, nori wraps and curry bowls. All dishes are perfect for sharing or grabbing to go if you need to munch in the car or stroller. Soirette Macarons and Tea COAL HARBOUR soirette.com
My daughter is at the age where a tea party is her favourite way to spend every waking hour. At Soirette not only do they offer piles of pretty pastel macarons (made with almond flour, most flavours are gluten free), they offer a gluten free high tea on weekends. Stacks of dainty desserts served alongside the best vanilla tea in the city? On a rainy day there’s no other place we’d want to be.
Bonus Suburban Deliciousness PIKANIK - SOUTH SURREY pikanik.ca
Pikanik ‘s amazing food is free from most common allergens but filled with love, innovation and glorious textures that you will not believe are gluten free. From cookies to naan bread to the sweetest of treats, they carry everything you and your little ones could ever dream of munching on. Best part? If you’re never out in that neighbourhood, they deliver! Check their website for more details.

6 temper tantrums Tactics to Prevent
BY NATACHA V. BEIM
One of the most frustrating moments for parents is having to endure their child’s temper tantrums, especially if it happens somewhere public. No matter how cool and collected we act, tantrums can be quite challenging and embarrassing. The good news is that there are many simple tricks that you can learn to ensure that your child experiences as few tantrums as possible. Prevention tactic #1: Catch it before it starts: If you look closely, you will notice when your child is getting sleepy or overly tired. You will see when he is frustrated by an activity that proves too difficult, or hungry between meals. The more you are in sync with your child’s emotional state, the more you will be able to help your child manage those emotions before they reach the level of a tantrum. Prevention tactic #2: Allow for twice as much time Children feel a natural urge to explore things that we often take for granted. We forget that they are forming essential neural connections in their brains by exploring, observing and handling all these things around them. While you are busy going from A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible, your child will want to stop to pick a tiny flower she saw a few steps back, or balance on a step, or even ask all kinds of questions about the oil stain left on the street by your neighbor’s car, which seems to have a beautiful rainbow inside it that she just needs to touch. If you feel your patience has reached its limit, stop. Remember that
while you may have an agenda for the day, she has her own agenda to explore. The best thing to do is to leave with at least an extra twenty minutes. That way, you can take the time you need for your child to learn from her surroundings. Prevention tactic #3: Divert If you see that your child is getting frustrated with an activity, or with his sibling, suggest a different activity before he loses control of his emotions: “You’ve been playing with your sister for a while now, and I miss you! Would you like to come for a walk with me?” or “It’s hard to put these puzzle pieces together isn’t it? Do you want to play in the water to rest your fingers for a little while? We could put bubbles in the bathtub!” Find something your child will find attractive enough that he will want to take a break in his current activity, and above all, don’t make your child feel like he has to do something else because he can’t handle what he is doing; children have their pride too. Prevention tactic #4: Offer choices If your child is asking you relentlessly for something she can’t have, find different ways of saying no. For example: “This candy will hurt your teeth; let’s find
10 • www.modernmama.com | VANCOUVER | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition
something you will love that is better for your health. Would you like this juice? Or do you want to make apple slices with honey? Let’s see if we can find honey here…” and go in search of it. If it is something they do not want, use the same method: “You need to wear shoes because we are going outside. Would you like your runners or your rubber boots? Would you like me to put them on for you or do you want to put them on?” The more choices your child gets to make throughout the day, the more she feels in control, and the less tantrums she will have. Even when your child is happy, make it a habit to ask her for her opinion (“Should we go this way or that way? Which do you prefer?”), offer her choices (“Do you want to go to the park today or to the library? Would you like to eat with a spoon or a fork? Do you want your vegetables first or your noodles?”). The more your child learns to manage her life, the more she will be able to manage her emotions as well. Many tantrums happen because children are asserting their independence. They have reached an age where you no longer make all of the decisions on their behalf. Prevention tactic #5: Communicate at eye level Once children start using language, we quickly forget that they are not as adept at communicating as we are yet. There are a few things to remember that will go a long way in preventing tantrums. Firstly, when you want something from your child, make your request while looking your child in the eye, and asking him to repeat back to you what you have asked him to do. Yelling it from the other room, or from the other side of the playground, will get you no results. Your request must be clear and concise: “Can you please sit on your chair so we can eat together?”
Prevention tactic #6: Eliminate “no” and “don’t” from your vocabulary Tell your child what you want instead of what you don’t want. Instead of saying “don’t scream,” ask him to “use your inside voice.” If your child is old enough, explain why (“When you speak loudly, it makes my head hurt”). Instead of, “don’t climb on the table”, ask him to keep his “feet on the ground” and if he is old enough, you can explain later that climbing on chairs and tables can cause him to fall, which will hurt. If your child is very little, use an assertive “OUCH” instead of shouting “NO” if he is reaching for the electrical outlet, or an open flame. With just that one word, you are clearly saying, “This is dangerous, you will get hurt.” instead of, “No”, which can mean “I don’t want you to explore” and may teach your child to shy away from new experiences, good or bad. Instead of, “No, you can’t have rice pudding,” try “Sure! Let’s save it here for after you have your lunch.” Instead of saying “not now” if your child wants a bath, you could say, “What a great idea! Let’s do that after I finish vacuuming the floor. Do you want to help me?” You will find that most “NOs” can turn into a “yes” if you specify when or how. Of all the things we go through with our children, tantrums are by far the least pleasant to endure. With these tools, you will definitely ensure that the tantrums are as few and as mild as possible. Good luck on your parenting journey! Natacha V. Beim is an early years and parenting expert, a writer, a speaker, a teacher, and the founder of the renowned CEFA Early Learning Schools (www.cefa.ca). Best Educational
& Last Forever
Toy Picks
BY: DONNA GROCOTT
As the owner of BC Playthings, I love to embark on educational adventures. This has led me to learn about all of the amazing ways that I would become a better educator to my own children.
Spending all day researching thoughtful child playthings has also led me on a journey of interpreting the world differently. “Can we play now Mom?” is sometimes a great invitation and sometimes one that we postpone due to daily responsibilities. However, I’ve learned that if you can re-frame the question to “Can you teach me, Mom?”, it becomes a moment for you to bond. Clear a space on your floor, sit in a well, naturally lit area and choose a well thought out activity from the toy box and let your imagination create a teachable moment. My personal teachable moments with my own boys are ones that I always cherish. I have learned so much from my boys and our floor play with their rubber wood Plan Toys, Brio and Ambi Toys that we still have eight years later and I still have them available for new play opportunities that often arrive. I can say with all honesty that the value in finding the right space, time and toy means enabling a quality moment shared. Your child has bonded with you, you took the time to enjoy and teach and you know that you have offered a memory for you and for your little love.

Our picks for the best in toys for your 2-5 year old that will last for years and years are:
1
Magna-Tiles.
Magna-Tiles are flat pieces of geometric shapes that have magnets running enclosed 1 along each edge. Simple to use, they offer the whole family an easy building tool that helps in early math. The geometric shapes of Magna-Tiles, allow your child to make 3D buildings and other creative constructions. The shapes can be sorted, sequenced and built into castles, homes and garages, or anything which requires executive planning - all of these you can share with your child, discuss and dream about while sitting on the floor, in a car, on a ferry, or in the classroom. A huge bonus, Magna-Tiles are easy to store and clean!
2
Fidget Toys and Sensory Toys.
These assist in calming and soothing anyone who needs an extra support at school, work, home, and play. An array of balls, wiggle cushions, putty, textured pens, and worry stones. Slowing down the moment through play offers children a tool that can last a lifetime! Fidgets are becoming a popular, sought out tool to enable self-regulation at any age.

They are excellent outdoor and indoor for little movers and shakers. Gross motor skills, early math and pretend play are all being tested when the Green Toys dump trucks made from recycled milk jugs are available. Dumping and filling (math), crawling and pushing the toy (gross motor) and imagining a whole new road (Pretend Play) are all being offered!
4
Plan Toys.
Made from renewable rubber wood and made in a state-of-the-art factory with an amazing philanthropist owner, Plan Toys are a delight to buy and play with! From dollhouses to stacking rings, cars to blocks, Plan Toys offers a huge selection of thoughtful toys for children and families! Create a family in the playhouse that looks like your own and re- enact your day. Sometimes a child needs to replay events to make more sense of them. With role-play and pretend play, a child learns how to move through their social world in a safe and imaginative way! Imaginative, open-ended toys, from a company you can feel good about buying from makes Plan Toys a delightful heirloom toy!
