Prepare to

Push! BY KIM VOPNI

In the fitness industry there are several principles of training. One of them is the principle of specificity. Essentially it means that you should train your body for the event you are preparing for. If you want to run a marathon your training should include running and strength and stretch activities for the muscles involved in running. If you want to be a better basketball player, you should practice a lot of drills, build strength and endurance in the muscles that are used for agility and dribbling and then play a lot of basketball. Birth is no different – well it is a bit different since you can’t really practice giving birth over and over but you can prepare your body for the big day. If you want to birth well, then you should learn how the body moves to facilitate birth and then train your body for endurance, strength and flexibility in those movements. Optimizing your upcoming birth means learning and then practicing various labour movements and birth positions. I recommend walking, squatting and pelvic rocking on a birth ball in preparation for early labour. These can all be practiced safely during

pregnancy. When it comes time to push I like the all 4’s positions and side lying positions best. Exercises such as hovering, the clam and side lying bent knee lift prepare you for these birth positions and are all safe to do during pregnancy. They really build up the strength and endurance in your legs, core and glutes for the big day. Flexibility and suppleness training should also be an essential part of your preparation. Stretching the glute muscles and hip flexor muscles should be done daily as well as hamstring and calf stretches. Releasing tension in the pelvic floor is essential and can be done with a small, soft ball such as a Miracle Method Ball or a Franklin Method Ball. Placing the ball between the sitz bone and the anus and then allowing it to melt into your posterior pelvic floor muscles will create space and openness in your pelvis for your baby and help you learn to yield against discomfort. Another preparation tool is visualization athletes often use imagery and visualization as they prepare for their event. Same goes for birth. Seeing in your mind the birth you want, visualizing space and a tension-free

birth canal for your baby will allow your mind to connect with ways that will optimize the movement of your baby into and out of your pelvis. Recovery is an aspect of training that is often overlooked but needs your full attention. It takes nine months of changes to grow your baby. It then takes many hours to get your baby out. Your body needs to rest, recover and heal and then progress gradually back to exercise. Many of the exercises you use to prepare will also be used to recover. The clam and bent knee lift will be some of the first followed by walking, hovering and then squatting. The key is to rest in the early days and gradually progress to upright positions and then upright moving activities. Take your time – even though birth is a marathon, it is not a race.

UAS and the “Right Tight” system make installation easy. Adjustments are a piece of cake as well, with a simple recline, and Tri-Zone Level Indicator to find the perfect angle for your child as they grow. There are straps to hold the harness out of the way when necessary, and SIP that adjusts between 6 positions, without rethreading, even with baby in the seat. SLEEP CALM & Dream On It is common in today’s world to think that total exhaustion is simply a part of parenting. We think that becoming Mom or Dad equals years of wondering where the ‘old you’ went while you stumble for your words, reheat your coffee for the tenth time, and say to your friends ‘I don’t know when I last slept 4 hours straight.’ We want to tell you that parenting does not have to be filled with fatigue; in fact, with the right strategies both your child (and you!) can get the rest you need to live a healthy, happy, and flexible family life.

A routine is a wonderful way to create happy bedtimes so you can bond with your child instead of struggle with them. They should be exactly the same. Every. Single. Time. Consistent and predictable sleep routines for bedtime and naptime are vital so that your child knows exactly what to expect. Our recommended bedtime routine is listed below and should be 20-30 minutes long. The naptime routine is a shortened version of the bedtime routine, minus the bath and the feed, and should last about 5 minutes.

It is up to us as parents to help our children get their desperately required Zzzs. The first step towards giving your family good sleep is to accept that naps and a good night’s rest are crucial for a child’s development and are just as important for good health as nourishment, love, and shelter. Then, you need to develop your sleep plan, an outline of how you and your family decide to handle every aspect of nighttime sleep and naps*. The foundation of a healthy sleep plan is based on two key items that will help you not only just survive – but also thrive - as a parent of a young child who needs more sleep:

• Bedtime bath (no need to lather up every day, a quick dunk is fine )

1. Having consistent sleep routines 2. Knowing your child’s sleepy cues and awake windows

• Diaper and sleep wear (we highly recommend using sleep sacks) • Have a bedtime feed/drink** (don’t forget to brush teeth) • Read a book (it doesn’t have to be long) • Sing a short song (‘twinkle-twinkle little star’ is a great one) • Put your child in their sleep space while they are still awake Yes – we said it! Put your child down awake: no rocking, bouncing or feeding your child to sleep. Once your little one knows how to fall asleep without relying on you, you’ll see a dramatic change in how long they sleep. Being 100% consistent with your child’s sleep routines will help them become familiar with how to put themselves to sleep in every situation – no matter where you are.

18 • www.modernmama.com | CALGARY | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition

‘Sleepy cues’ are the tired signs that your child exhibits before they are overtired. The most common include pink eyebrows and the ‘million-mile stare,’ when your child seems to mentally ‘check out’ for a moment. Look for these sleepy cues so you can identify when your child needs to start their sleep routine. Behaviour such as overexcitement, high emotions, eye rubbing, back arching, and ear pulling are overtired signs and show that your child should have gone to sleep earlier. Remember, an overtired child is a child that has a very difficult time relaxing for sleep - and that makes for stressful family bedtimes. Watch for sleepy cues and give yourself adequate time for the sleep routine; plan ahead and be prepared!

An ‘awake window’ is the time period from when your child wakes to when they fall back asleep for their nap or for bedtime. Children – right from newborn age – can only stay awake for a certain period of time before they catapult into a state of overtiredness. If you do not notice sleepy cues in your child (which does happen!), start by following your child’s age-based awake window, which is unique to them. Start on the low side and watch carefully! Newborn: 45 - 60 minutes 3 - 6 months: 1 - 2 hours 6 - 12 months: 2 - 3.5 hours 12+ months***: 2.5 - 6 hours

* A newborn child needs to feed around the clock to be healthy. We recommend that your child be over 13 weeks AND 13 pounds before you consider rescheduling nighttime feeds to the daytime. ** If your child is over a year, consider having a feed (breast or bottle) before bath time. *** The awake window for 12+ months is relevant until a child is ready to give up napping, often around 3-4 years old.

www.modernmama.com | CALGARY | A RESOURCE GUIDE | 2015/2016 Edition • 19

Implementing these core strategies at a young age is the key to moving towards a life of restful naps and happier bedtimes. Some children and parents, however, are at the point where they might need a little (or a lot!) of help in modifying a child’s learned sleep habits. We no longer have the proverbial ‘village’ of support when it comes to raising children so, if you’re looking for more advice for your situation, consider hiring a Certified Child Sleep Consultant. Sleep consulting is becoming increasingly popular amongst parents because a consultant can give you the answers and support you need - when you need it – and can provide you with a proven, customized sleep plan for your child so that your family can sleep calm and dream on.

Rest assured! Kari Wright, B.A., B.Ed., and Alison Ruks, B.M., C.H., are Certified Child Sleep Specialists and co-founders of The Sleeping Child who provide sleep solutions and support to families around the world. They are mothers who have faced the challenges of child sleep issues, have over 30 years of combined family health and education experience, and are passionate about helping you develop positive family experiences. Avoiding Post Partum

Depression BY CONNIE PETERS

1 Talk with your caregiver and family members about your risks (family history of depression can increase your risk) before you give birth.

5 Treat yourself to a massage, a night out, whatever you feel is relaxing to your spirit.

2 Talk to your caregiver or a therapist if you have anxiety or negative feelings about your pregnancy, childbirth, parenting or life in general.

6S urround yourself with a supportive network. Visit your local health unit after the baby arrives, and find a moms group (visit our resource listings in this guide), or join a support group like La Leche League to connect with other moms.

3 A healthy lifestyle is important in managing stress and anxiety. Eating balanced meals, whole foods, exercise and lots of rest can improve your state of mind.

7G et active at local post-natal fitness offerings that encourage you to bring your baby along with you. (We list plenty of options in our resource listings in this guide)

4 Learn to say no! Don’t overextend yourself and be sure to set your expectations low during the months surrounding birth (both before and after).

8A sk for help. Don’t stay silent about stress or negative feelings.

The Postpartum Depression Awareness Society (ppda.ca) and your local Health Unit can provide support and be a resource.

Nest Prep: Getting Ready to Bring Home Baby

Baby’s Room Do you want baby close to your bedroom for convenience or far away for a sound barrier? If you have a choice, you’ll want to put some thought to this. Decorating is the fun part – but don’t go overboard! Start with the basics (crib, changing table, dresser, rocking chair) and then add in the items you love over time. And don’t forget the most important part: safety. You might want to think about replacing the baby’s bedroom door with a wooden screen door. It’ll keep pets and guests out, but keep you seeing and hearing the baby.

Gear Never mind the fancy stuff, a good old fashioned rocking chair will be relaxing for you and create a soothing motion for your baby at feeding time. Look for one that will become a useful and memorable piece of furniture in your home for years to come. And because you can’t be in all places at all times, be sure to purchase a dependable baby monitor. This is a huge comfort, especially during those first days at home with baby.

Regardless of if you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, you’re going to need some equipment. If you’re bottle-feeding, you’ll need bottles and formulas. If you’re breastfeeding, you’ll want a breast pump and bottles so others can lend a hand in the feeding department. Don’t forget the nipple cream and phone number of a local breastfeeding support group. If you don’t already own a digital camera, now would be a good time to buy one. Simple, durable and dependable trumps fancy and hard to operate. Once baby is hear, you’ll be overwhelmed by the photo ops…starting a few minutes after birth! Ask around and get some recommended reading or websites for baby care. Whether it’s a sniffle or rash, these resources are incredibly valuable!

Baby Proofing Remember: it doesn’t need to be done all at once. A newborn requires a different kind of baby proofing compared to a mobile crawler! Re-evaluate as your baby hits each new stage, but be sure to be baby-proofed before baby makes it through the door.

It’s easy to forget to feed yourself when you find yourself tending to your baby’s unknown eating schedule. Yes, there’s always take-out, but that takes its toll on your wallet and your health. If you start in the time leading up to baby’s arrival, you can fill your freezer with easy meals like casseroles, sauces and stews.

Make a list of all of your important phone numbers. Program them into your mobile, but also post them near your home phone. Don’t forget the pediatrician, your family doctor, poison control, and any other support numbers.
