YEARBOOK
VALETE
FROM THE HEADMASTER
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. This new yearbook is the very best way to capture the essence of life at Arnold House over the last twelve months. A vast array of human traits are on display here: curiosity, trepidation, concentration, friendship, determination and joy. It is also a reminder of just how much we have undertaken both here at school and offsite, in a year that was still overshadowed by the pandemic.
The opening of our Early Years setting at Marlborough Place was an historic moment for the school. The staff and boys, the latter resplendent in their red blazers, were up and running straight away and the benefits of their addition to the wider Arnold House family have been clear to see. Those first cohorts will now move through the school, advancing our provision in all ways in the years to come.
I was also delighted with the way in which staff responded to the phased lifting of restrictions as the year unfolded. It was no small task to reintroduce all that a good prep school offers outside of the classroom, especially after an enforced pause of two years. If newspapers were reporting fears that some aspects of school life would never return, there was no sign of reluctance or rustiness here at Arnold House, where the attitude was overwhelmingly positive. Matches, events, visitors and trips quickly made their way back into the calendar, enriching the boys lives, and allowing the whole community to re-engage with each other. Even the weather played its part!
The photographs on the following pages capture all this and more. Records of scores in matches can be found elsewhere, as can exam results and housepoints; this yearbook takes the same focus that we bring to each day: the boys. Their experiences, reflected in their eyes, faces, hands and hearts, are the most important part of the school and it is ensuring that they are fully engaged in all that is on offer which lies at the heart of our success. So enjoy the 2022 Yearbook, which will always serve as the best way of getting to know what it has been like to be an Arnold House boy at work, rest and play over the last year.

FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
It gives me great pleasure to report on a very successful year at Arnold House with a most welcome return to the normal rhythms of school life uninterrupted by the vagaries of Covid.
The boys are clearly delighted to be back in school with their classmates and teachers and the staff are, likewise, extremely happy to be back in the classroom. My post-pandemic discussions with parents have revealed even more respect for the skills and patience required to teach effectively!
We were delighted to welcome our Pre-Reception and Reception boys to Marlborough Place last September. Our Huxley boys, after a year, are well and truly Arnold House schoolboys; busy, lively, inquiring and clearly enjoying their learning.
Our other “new boy”, Giles Tollit, has hit the ground running and has spent a very busy year “getting under the skin” of Arnold House and truly understanding the School’s culture. He has worked closely with the Governing Body to envisage how we develop the additional spaces created by the purchase of The Huxley Building and we look forward to sharing this vision with you.
The Governing Body has also been very busy behind the scenes. We send our heartfelt thanks and wish a fond farewell to three retiring Governors. Dan Widdicombe, our Treasurer, retired after eight years. His support and wisdom during the Covid pandemic and the purchase of The Huxley Building has been exceptional. Vicky Savage leaves Sarum Hall to take up the Headship of Repton Prep. Her guidance on the curriculum, staffing and safeguarding of our Early Years has been invaluable. Mark English, Vice Master at UCS, has been a fantastic support on both the Academic and Appointment Committees. We are most grateful to all our retiring Governors for their support and generosity of both their time and skills.
We welcome two new Governors to the Board; Mike Grenier, Senior Master at Eton College, joins our Academic Committee and Sumita Honey who brings depth and breath in knowledge of the charitable and financial sectors to the Board. We are delighted that they have agreed to join the Governing Body and look forward to working with them.
Finally, my very special thanks must go to all of our fantastically dedicated staff, very supportive parents and exceptional boys for making Arnold House such a unique place to grow and learn.
Dr Michèle Badenoch Chair of Governors
