For us looking back over the year has been interesting. So many changes occurred at Urban Life and yet there are still so many more to come. The summer holidays are finally apon us and apart from planning the actual holiday, we have Christmas to think about as well. I am a firm believer in being organised in advance, as the craziness of December is very overwhelming. Being a mom of 2 children, I thought it would be great to look at holiday essentials for the whole family. I am not sure about you, but I generally get left to sort everyone out, from the shopping to the planning and even the packing! urbanlifenstyle.com

All our needs are different, but here are a few things that you shouldn’t leave home without.
FAMILY ESSENTIALS: • Sunblock • Multi-plug/charger • Passports and documentation • Travel size cosmetics • Travel pillow • Camera
these may seem obvious, but i bet you have left at least one of these items behind. it’s best to decant cosmetics into smaller containers. make sure your hand luggage is regulation size, and that all the things you need access to are packed in there. i always recommend you take a change of clothes in your hand luggage, in case of delays or lost luggage. if you are travelling with smaller children, make sure you have something packed to keep them busy. i have seen many a mom sweating on the aeroplane with a screaming child who is merely bored, and wanting something to do.
ESSENTIALS FOR HIM:
When heading on a summer holiday, think light and comfortable. a great pair of comfortable shoes in a neutral colour, a few pairs of cotton shorts and golfers would be the route that i would go. baggies or swimming shorts, slops and a hat. a button down collared shirt and a pair of chinos or dark denims, in case you have to follow a dress code for evening. select fabrics that don’t crease easily and that are cool. make sure you have colours that mix and match, as this will reduce the amount of clothes you will need to pack. i follow this list for my 14 year old son, but just don’t worry too much about a dress code for the evening. i pack more on the t-shirt and baggies side. i try and select easy drying fabric, as I find that generally it’s a matter of alternating between very few items.

ESSENTIALS FOR HER:
this can be a whole lot more tricky as our choices are endless. cottons, sheers and mesh is what works best! these are lightweight, don’t crease and keep you cool. invest in great cover ups for your swimwear, which can overlap in the evening as a dress/skirt. dresses are easiest to pack, with neutral sandals and a neutral bag. a casual dress can easily be transformed for evening by wearing a smarter shoe and accessorising. bermuda shorts are also a great essential that can be dressed up or down. for my 16 year old daughter, i pack more shorts and tops, as this seems to be what this generation wears year in and year out! a few bikinis and sarongs are best for this age group. i spend quite a lot of time convincing her that less is better. give your children the freedom to make their own choices within reason. be there to guide, but not to do everything for them. this is a great time for the family to relax and be together. don’t let overweight bags and stuff way you down. Pack the essentials and leave the rest behind.

Our temperatures seldom or if ever, dip as low as in some European countries, which means packing can be quite a challenge. The jacket we think of as being ‘warm enough’ may just not cut it in New York in the winter.

Dressing for cold weather destinations means layering up. Make sure you have a woollen beanie, thick scarf, thermal underwear, thick socks, and a good all purpose winter jacket with a hood. A thick coat is not essential if you layer properly as most indoor places you might visit will be centrally heated. Just don’t forget a good pair of boots. Remember, winter wear is heavier than summer, so if you intend buying anything while abroad you may want to watch your weight before you leave.

switzerland is a mountainous country, and many attractions can be closed due to the weather. also, remember to plan your trip well as the combination of travel time and weather can eat into your holiday. if you plan on being in the country for at least a week an 8 day swiss saver pass may be beneficial. Apart from being good value for money, it also allows unlimited travel by rail, water or road. there are also numerous discounts that come along with it, like free admission to certain museums. (in some cases you may have to purchase an additional ticket for certain lines)
If you're a first time visitor to the country I would suggest Lucerne (Central Switzerland) or Interlaken (Berne Oberland) as definite stops. It is about a 2 hour train ride between the two. If you have the time you can do both but certainly Lucerne has more to offer by way of a town and the stops between the two are pretty remarkable. TRAvEL

the jungfrau district of interlaken has beautiful mountain villages including a few where motor vehicles are completely prohibited like, murren and Wengen. jungfrau is also famous for having europe’s highest train station and remarkable views.

the swiss are known for their delicious cheeses and taste bud tempting chocolate and you can get to sample both of these at the villages of broc fabrique and gruyeres. the cheese factory is in broc and you can taste cheese to your hearts content, then take twenty minutes to walk it off, uphill, to the medieval village of gruyere where you can visit maison cailler, for the most heavenly chocolate on earth. if you have the time you can enrol in a chocolate workshop.

With the recent disasters in paris we thought we’d pay homage to the city of lights and explore it in all its snowy white glory during the cold months.
Lucerne itself has lots to offer but the one place that is certainly worth a visit is the glass factory where you can watch glass blowing by hand or mouth. (entry is covered by your swiss saver).
paris in Winter is a spectacular affair especially at night, it’s not called the city of lights for nothing. the night lights twinkle, the air is chilly and the warming aromas of hearty stews fill the air. If you’re a red wine drinker,
switzerland is beautiful especially when in its full Winter regalia of snow, but plan carefully. if you’re a ski beginner then choose a location wisely. the best resort for beginners is in the berne overland area. a note to remember is that whether you arrive in Zurich or geneva, lucerne is still a train ride away.
i promise, it will never taste as good as in paris on a cold winter night. the christmas lights on the champs elysee beckon as you stroll along streets which are much quieter than during the summer season. the days are shorter with dark falling around 4:30pm which means you have dinner a little earlier, but you may linger much longer than any other time.

Winter is special in that it is ‘hunting season’. so look out for venison and of course game birds like pheasant (faisan) or grouse on the menu. 10. of coursE, that french accent. just the call of a vendor calling you to try his chaud les marrons (coal roasted chestnuts) or a waiter offering you a cup of vin chaud (hot wine) can sound sexy and romantic...more than enough reason for visit me thinks.

The summer is for love. Love of spending endless hours in the African sunshine. Love of travelling to beachy destinations along the coast and letting your hair down. Love of eating fresh seasonal foods at the best restaurants in the world. and, a love of relaxing and pampering yourself on holiday. i am head over heels in love with the summer in and around South Africa, in fact anywhere you decide to worship the sunshine in the whole world is wonderful. Thoughts of breezy warm nights, wearing just shorts and a tee, make my heart swoon. Long days inspire adventure, hikes up mountains and runs along promenades, yet I feel like I can accomplish everything and lounge on a towel for hours in the hot sand simultaneously. It’s the possibility of leisure, however you prefer it. Travelling in summer makes me want to move just a little faster, only to relax on the beach again every afternoon. And the eating, the incredible eating that comes along with a festive season that’s celebrated during the summer; it’s pure sensory overload. This is the season to be absolutely joyous. It doesn’t matter if it’s spas and saunas, a big Christmas dinner or a pumping New Year’s Eve party, the summer is the absolute best time to indulge in everything on offer. With good times always flying by, I make sure to check-off a few things from my summer wishlist before time moves on too quickly.

But of course, nothing beats an African Summer. Long lazy days, cocktails on the beach and tanned bodies relaxing poolside while the sultry sounds of African beats drifts in and out on the wind. And the most fantastic thing is that we need not venture too far to have a holiday, stay a little closer to home and our rand does not take a complete beating. Escape to the islands, we chose neighbours, Mozambique and Zanzibar to get our Summer party started. Both islands are hot and humid, both offer the soothing gentle breezes off the Indian ocean, both have their own flavour yet are remarkably similar in their African hospitality.
MOZAMBIQUE ever popular with durbanites and joburgers alike, with its quick travel time of just about 5 hours drive from both cities, mozambique, the once portuguese colony still alive with Portuguese flavour and culture is slowly but surely returning to its previous status of south africa’s ‘playground’ as it was during its heyday of lourenco marques. i remember clearly my parents taking off there often just for a weekend jaunt and now it seems we’re following suit. although still recovering from many tumultuous years of civil war the people are friendly and welcoming and their warm hospitality will quickly put you at ease. mozambique is well known for its pristine beaches and excellent seafood so prepare to be thoroughly spoiled. south africans have made the rum and raspberry drink a firm favourite and many have tried to replicate it once back home. alas, without the special rum, tipo tinto, which you can only get in mozambique, the results are never quite the same. so whilst you’re here, indulge. just be careful, the refreshing sweet drink strikes a mean punch. the areas of Xai Xai and ponto d’oura are relatively well known but try something a little different and venture to one of the marine parks the country offers. Like, the Quirimbas arqipelago...stunningly beautiful with miles and miles of unspoilt beaches and natural beauty. pemba is the gateway to Quirimbas , it has the most spectacular coral reefs which provide excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving. forests of baobab trees grow all the way down to the shoreline and send the gentle breezes coming in off the ocean your way to cool down on hot humid days. Pemba offers up beautiful displays of portuguese architecture and Arab influence. it is situated in the north of the country so self drive can be a little challenging, yet not impossible, though access may require a 4 wheel drive. A quick flight from any major south african airport solves all the problems though.
don’t forget to explore the markets to pick up some cashew nuts, mazavaroo sauce and maybe even a bottle of tipo tinto. the traditional markets also offer loads by way of arts and crafts and traditionally made items.

Expect to find some exquisite pieces of silver jewellery as well as colourful fabrics which you can bring home and transform into the outfit of your choice. A dhow safari is a great way to drink in all the surrounding beauty from the vantage point of being on the water. the language spoken in mozam is still portuguese so learn a few phrases before you leave like, boa dia, boa note (good morning, good evening) or obrigado (thank you)

pemba is a stone’s throw away from Zanzibar and getting between the two countries is quite easy. either catch a fast boat (book with your hotel), a ferry or a plane ride, which is fairly cheap and a lot quicker, if you take distances into account. Although Pemba is beautiful and offers a great escape from city life, Zanzibar does have just that little bit more to offer. Choosing which end of the island to stay on is probably your biggest problem.
the east coast is more of a resort type atmosphere with many offering ‘all inclusive’ options but the south and north coasts have the most beautiful beaches. stone town is of course a must visit...after all it is the birthplace of the legend freddie mercury. but more than this, stone town is the only functioning historical town in east africa. stunning arab architecture and once graceful palaces still line the streets and offer a glimpse into what once was.
the small town has an almost magnetic appeal but so to do the crystal clear waters of the ocean. Walk down to the beach and hire a boat to take you to sandbank or nakupenda. absolutely breathtaking...white sands, clear blue waters and amazing coral reefs. be warned though, the beach becomes submerged once the tide comes in...so plan to get in early.

a tour of the mtoni palace ruins is another highlight and just simply delightful. it gives a great view of what it was like during arab reign. the palace is one of the oldest buildings on the island and was one of the largest of sultan sayyid said’s palaces during his reign. in fact book a princess salme spice tour which begins at the palace, where she was born.
It includes a boat ride to a traditional coffee and dates ceremony, a spice tour by donkey cart and a traditional arab meal. there is also a visit to the persian baths that were built for sultan said’s second wife. princess salme was one of the sultan’s daughters and is one of Zanzibar’s most famous inhabitants.
Zanzibar is a kick back and relax kinda destination so once you're done exploring make sure you leave enough time to do just that. What with the many beaches and water adventures that are available, you really need to ensure that you do.

The Pastoukhoff suite pays tribute to the Russian artist, whose art-work adorns the walls of the Lancaster. PREPARATION 1. Steam the potatoes until tender, then mash with butter and cream then season with salt and white pepper. 2. Set a large heavy frying pan over a medium-high heat and pour in the olive oil. Season the Kingfish fillets with salt and white pepper. Arrange the Kingfish pieces in the hot oil and sear for 2 minutes.

Turn over and cook for 3 minutes on the reverse side, or until Kingfish is cooked medium-well. Remove the fish from the frying pan, stir in the thyme, garlic and stock cube and cook for 1 minute. PREPARATION: 1. Separate the eggs to yolk and egg white put in a bowl, mix the cocoa and flour 2. Beat to the machine egg yolk and half of the sugar to a creamy consistency (sabayon). Beat the egg white with the leftover sugar to a form meringue. Then, mix egg yolk mixture with the egg white mixture together then fold in flour, 3. Add the dessicated coconut to half of the mixture

Stir in orange juice, butter and vanilla until well combined.

Combine the octopus, bay leaf, thyme, peppercorns, 1 teaspoon salt, the garlic, and 1 of the lemons, cut in half, in a saucepan along with water to cover 2. Turn the heat to medium, cover, and bring to a boil. Adjust the heat so that the liquid simmers slowly and cook until the octopus is tender, 30 to 90 minutes (check with the point of a sharp knife) 3. Drain, discarding all the solids (except for the octopus) 4. You can prepare octopus 24 hours in advance up to this point; cover and refrigerate the octopus 5. Start a charcoal or wood fire or preheat a gas grill; the fire should be quite hot and the grill rack about 4 inches from the heat source. Cut the octopus into large serving pieces, brush it with half the olive oil, and sprinkle it with salt and pepper 6. Grill it quickly, so that the outside browns before the inside dries out. Cut the remaining lemon into wedges 7. Brush the octopus with the remaining olive oil. Serve with lemon wedges, hot or at room temperature, garnished with the parsley

Toast in oven on low heat METHOD SALAD: 1. Wash and clean thoroughly crunchy lettuce leaves and soak well 2. Mix the crunchy leaves with dressings and croutons 3. Serve with saved parmesan cheese.
