Happy New Year to everyone. We have stepped into 2022 and we have put 2021 behind us. Even though we still have luggage from 2021, we should be thankful and blessed to see a new year. My friends and reader’s, we must continue to be mindful of the fact that Covid is still a part of our daily lives and we must stay masked up and we must also get the vaccine. There is also a war on voter’s rights. This is a war we must win, as we cannot go backwards, but we must continue to move forward. Also, let us not forget the dream as we remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday this month. This month’s edition of the magazine features Dr. DeWayne Harvey. Dr. Harvey is a great gospel singer and Pastor who hails from Florida. Dr. Bobby Jones calls Dr. Harvey the Renaissance Man of Gospel. This man of God has a great gospel song on the charts at this time and it features gospel great Fred Hammond. It was a pleasure interviewing this great gospel singer.

MAKE IT YOUR BUSINESS!!

22 GREAT SMALL BUSINESS IDEAS by Ambassador Dr. Anita Davis DeFoe for urban sentinel Have you considered exploring the “gig” or freelance economy? Are you considering creating multiple streams of personal income? Do you have an idea for a product or service that you want to launch in the marketplace? Many people have been sitting on a great business idea and hoping to ‘ride out’ the pandemic, but it’s time to stop stalling and simple go for it now – start your business in 2022, remember it is without question the season to manifest you! It has been nearly two years since the pandemic began in the United States, and one thing is clear… COVID-19 is not going anywhere. While this thought is truly disturbing, the pandemic has created a unique environment that is beneficial for new small business owners, so now just might be the best time to get started. Consider these 9 reasons to 4

start a business in 2022 as you ponder your decision and plan your enterprise! 1. You’ve Been Soul Searching The last two years have been a time of reflection for all of us, so likely you have been doing some soul searching as well. Are you living the life you want? Are you happy? Do you have a purpose? If your unrealized dreams are keeping you up at night, and you can’t quiet the voice in the back of your head that keeps telling you to ‘go for it!’ then you have all the signs you need that it’s time to start a business in 2022. 2. E-commerce Is HOT The pandemic has changed the way we do business. After months of not being able to shop in person, even the most

reluctant have joined the online shopping bandwagon, with statistics showing a spike of nearly 40% growth in e-commerce since the start of the pandemic. Chances are there are tons of people online right now searching and shopping for what you want to sell. 3. Shop Local Trend Is Growing Research on post-COVID purchasing behavior shows that consumers are increasingly moving away from malls and big-box stores and shopping locally instead. The pandemic touched us all at a very human level, and with that came a new appreciation for frontline workers and for our neighbors who were working in our local communities Research shows that 56 percent of consumers are shoppin g at neighborhood stores or buying locally sourced products, and other research indicates that more consumers are planning to shop local over the next year. 4. The Market Is Ripe for Innovation The pandemic has given way to brand new industries, and entirely redesigned many traditional industries. In essence, there is an open invitation for disruptive ideas and novel products right now, especially as they relate to the changes in work and lifestyle caused by the pandemic. 5. You’ll Face Less Competition The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a huge toll on businesses, small and large. Research suggests that there are now 37.5% fewer small businesses open compared to January 2020 (two months before the pandemic struck the US). Since official closure statistics have a lag, how many of these businesses have closed permanently and how many are facing temporary shutdowns is unclear. Regardless, the chances are good that you will have significantly less competition if you start a business in 2022. 6. Space Is Available (If You Need It) Closed businesses mean more than just less competition. If you need to rent a storefront space for your small business, you’re in a great position to do so right now. Not only are there more options available, but you may even find discounts or be able to negotiate affordable rent. But maybe you don’t even need a commercial space. According to the Harvard Business Review, the number of digital nomad

businesses (those that don’t have a specific location) has been increasing since the pandemic and is projected to grow even further. New technology like collaboration software, productivity apps, and communication platforms have made it possible to work remotely, so this might be an option for your business too. 7. You Have Funding Options Whether it’s a grant, a loan, or another funding source, help is available to those who want to start a business in 2022. There are so many options, in fact, that the US Chamber of Commerce just posted a list of 49 Grants, Loans, and Programs to Benefit Your Small Business. The article has links and details for all the funding options from federal, state, and local government as well as the private sector. 8. You’ll Be Set Up for Long-Term Success Recent news suggests that we are entering a recession, so if you start a business in 2022, you’ll be focused on creating a lean company from the start. This means prioritizing essentials, limiting your spending, and keeping a close watch on your numbers. In other words, you’ll be doing everything RIGHT from the start! The thoughtful way you start and run your business in 2022 will set you up for success as you develop good habits and create a robust long-term plan. 9. You Can Enjoy the Perks NOW While there are many specific reasons to start a business in 2022, some of the best reasons are perks to enjoy ANY time you become your own boss, such as: • Make more money • Have increased flexibility • Pursue your passion • Find your purpose • Solve customer’s problems • Build a team/support your staff • Give back to your community If you're ready to run your own business, consider these business areas for your envisioned enterprise. 1. Consulting If you are knowledgeable and passionate about a specific topic (like business, social media, marketing, human resources, leadership or communication), consulting can be a lucrative

URBAN SENTINEL MAGAZINE | JAN 2022

5

option. You can start a consulting business on your own, then grow your business and hire other consultants over time. 2. Online reselling Those passionate about clothing and/or sales may consider starting an online reseller business. Although it takes time and dedication – and an eye for fashion – you can start as a side hustle and turn into a full-time resale business. You could start by using online store websites like Poshmark and Mercari to sell your unwanted clothing, then expanding to your own resale website. 3. Online teaching The demand for online education has opened up possibilities for entrepreneurs. Since this is an online venture, you can choose any subject you are knowledgeable about and teach a course regardless of your location. If you don't have advanced knowledge in any particular subject, consider teaching English as a foreign language online to students overseas. 4. Online bookkeeping As with education, technology allows many bookkeeping services to be performed online. If you are an accountant or bookkeeper who wants the freedom and autonomy of running your own business, take advantage of modern technology to start your own online bookkeeping service. 5. Medical courier service If you have a reliable vehicle and good time management skills, consider creating your own courier service – more specifically, a medical courier service. As a driver, you would be responsible for transporting medical items like lab specimens, prescription drugs and equipment. You could start your courier business on your own, or hire other drivers to work for you. 6. App development If you are knowledgeable and experienced in technology, you may want to consider a career in app development. Smartphones are an everyday accessory these days, which has increased demand for mobile apps. 7. Transcription service If you have a good ear and can type quickly, a transcription service would allow you to work from home with a flexible

6

schedule. Medical transcription services are especially needed as voice recognition technology proliferates for healthcare provider dictation. If you're not looking to start all at once, or if u have a day job you would like to keep for the time being, you can accept as few or as many transcription jobs as you'd like. 8. Professional organizing Looking for a business idea that can really spark joy? Professional organizers help people declutter and minimize for a living. If you're a highly organized person who enjoys making spaces functional and comfortable, you might be good at coaching others to do the same. People will pay you to help them devise a method of minimizing their possessions and maintaining an organized space. 9. Cleaning service If you like to clean, you can easily turn that into a business. With a few staff members, a host of cleaning supplies and transportation, you can offer cleaning services to homeowners, apartment complexes and commercial properties. 10. Freelance copywriting or content writing If you're a natural wordsmith with a bit of marketing knowledge, you can establish yourself as a freelance copywriter or content writer. Whether you write blogs, web content or press releases, plenty of companies will pay for your services. Increase your value by using SEO knowledge to help clients craft a strategy around specific keywords that their target audience is already using in their online searches. 11. Home care service A background in care and hospitality can go a long way to support housebound seniors who require in-home care. It's also a service for which demand is only going to grow. According to the National Institute on Aging, between 2010 and 2050, the 85-and-over population is projected to increase 351% globally, and the global number of centenarians (those over age 100) is projected to increase tenfold. 12. Translation service According to research from IBISWorld, the translation services industry saw a decline in 2020, as did many industries; however, IBISWorld forecasts a "major uptick" for

the industry over the next five years. That projected growth isn't surprising, as the internet has opened up entrepreneurs in other countries to English-speaking markets and vice versa. This trend has created an opening for multilingual speakers to offer specific services, such as document translation and the translation of website information into languages for use in other markets. If you're fluent in multiple languages, you could be successful carving out a niche in the translation services industry. 13. Digital marketing The importance of the internet grows with every passing day, but it also becomes harder for businesses to cut through the online clutter and properly market themselves. Digital marketing services are always in demand, and many small and midsize companies would rather outsource them than establish a costly in-house team. 14. Owning a food truck With indoor dining limited in many locations right now, aspiring restaurateurs might find more success with a food truck. Food trucks come in all shapes and sizes, serving up a wide range of snacks and cuisines. Take your favorite style of food on the road and sell your culinary passions directly to hungry customers. 15. Lawn care service Working outdoors with your hands to tame and beautify the natural landscape can be a rewarding experience, and since so many people find the work tedious, it can also be profitable. 16. Rideshare driving If starting your own business seems daunting or too much of a risk, you can always use your car to become a rideshare driver. The overhead and responsibility of running the company falls on the rideshare service, giving you the freedom to work as much or as little as you want.. 17. Real estate For many people, navigating the housing market is overwhelming. As a real estate agent, you can help people find their dream homes at a price that fits their budget. In many states, you only need to complete a few months of classes and pass an exam to qualify as a real estate agent.

18. Graphic design Corporations, small businesses and sole proprietors all need eye-catching promotional materials, but not everybody has an eye for what looks good. If you have an artistic streak and know how to organize content into a visually pleasing format, start a graphic design business to provide flyers, digital ads, posters and other engaging visual materials. Graphic design requires few physical tools beyond a laptop and a desk. 19. T-shirt printing Just like with graphic design, you might enjoy launching a T-shirt printing business if you've got a sharp artistic sense – or if you enjoy taking someone else's designs and screen printing them onto a blank tee. . 20. Drop shipping Not all companies that sell goods store them onsite. In drop shipping, people who run e-commerce sites go to a third party to fulfill all orders. The third party is likely a wholesale retailer or other entity that runs a warehouse and shipping operation. al inventory and tools needed for drop shipping make it an especially great startup idea if you're worried about overhead costs and physical space. 21. Pet sitting As a pet sitter, you'll watch over your clients' dogs, cats or other pets at their house, making sure to feed them, give them water, play with them, spend time with them, and (with dogs) walk them as needed. You'll also need to regularly update your clients on how their pets are doing. 22. Virtual Assistants Small business owners and entrepreneurs so often need support, but not the expense of a full-time employee, so a virtual assistant becomes ideal. Whether providing administrative, financial management, cybersecurity, or marketing support, becoming a virtual assistant can be a lucrative small business to launch. If you are considering enterprise, 2022 can become the year you manifest the entrepreneurial mindset that best reflects YOU!!

The Combahee Ferry Raid: One of Harriet Tubman’s Missions to Freedom by Brandee Johnson for urban sentinel Forget waiting until February; why not begin the new year honoring our ancestors and keeping in mind what they sacrificed for all of us to reach our greatest potential? There are many of our ancestors who deserve to be remembered each month out of the year for their bravery and ability to overcome insurmountable obstacles. One of our ancestors who will always deserve her flowers is Maryland’s own hero Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman accomplished so much in her life that cannot be covered in just one month dedicated to Black History. While mainstream media has described Harriet Tubman as the conductor of the Underground Railroad, she was also a spy, a nurse, and abolitionist, and a Civil War scout. In fact, one of Tubman’s greatest accomplishments was a mission that will not be discussed in many history books: the Combahee Ferry Raid. The Combahee Ferry Raid was a military operation that took place during the Civil War from June 1 to June 2, 1863. Under the command of Union Colonel James Montgomery, Harriet Tubman became the first woman to lead a major military operation in the United States. Thanks to Tubman’s

8

leadership, she and 150 African-American Union soldiers succeeded in rescuing more than 700 slaves. Tubman became involved in the Civil War when she travelled down to South Carolina as a volunteer for the Union Army. For months, she served several roles such as serving as a nurse and opening a washhouse. Because Tubman had experience with forming allies, gathering information and evading capture, she was given orders to create a spy ring. Tubman collaborated with Colonel James Montgomery, an abolitionist that commanded the Black regiment known as the Second South Carolina Volunteers. These two were responsible for crafting a raid set to take place along the Combahee River. The plan was to rescue enslaved people, retain freed men into the Union Army, and eliminate some of the rice plantations in the region. At the time Montgomery had about 300 men, with 50 coming from a Rhode Island Regiment. Tubman was also able to recruit eight scouts that assisted her with mapping out the area and sending word to enslave people about the time that the raid would take place. Tubman brought not only courageousness and fearlessness

A reporter from the Wisconsin State Journal heard about the Combahee River raid and began to write the story without mentioning Tubman’s name or role in the raid. Instead, he mentioned how Montgomery’s “gallant band of 300 soldiers” operated under the guidance of a Black woman, creating millions in economic damages and striking terror into the heart of the Confederacy. Fortunately, in July of 1863 Franklin Sanborn, the editor of Boston’s Commonwealth newspaper, picked up the story and mentioned Tubman’s name, who was a dear friend of his.

but also a sense of trust. She was able to get African-American people to trust her in a way that Union officers could not, for obvious reasons. On the night of June 1, 1863, Tubman and Montgomery led two gunboats out of the St. Helena Sound towards the Combahee River. Because Tubman was illiterate and unable to write down any gathered information, she committed all gathered intelligence to memory and guided the ships near strategic points where enslaved people were waiting and the Confederate property could be destroyed.

Although the Combahee Ferry Raid was one of Tubman’s greatest accomplishments, Tubman was consistent in freeing her people from slavery long after the Civil War. Until her death in 1913, Harriet Tubman was a true leader and fighter. Union forces modeled the tactics used in the raid for several operations, and the plantations and mills that were destroyed during the raid were not rebuilt after the war. Regardless of mainstream media’s coverage of her achievements, it is evident that Harriet Tubman lived an interesting life, and served so many people in her 91 years of living.

Around 2:30 a.m. on June 2, Tubman led 150 soldiers on the John Adams boat toward the fugitives. Once the signal was given, Tubman recounted seeing women carrying babies, crying children, animals running amok, and pots of rice. Rebels attempted to chase the slaves, gunning them down and murdering at least one girl. As the slaves escaped to the shore, Black troops met them in rowboats to transport them to the ships. Afterwards, there were more than 700 slaves who escaped and made it to the ships. The troops were also able to torch the plantations and fields of near Field’s Point, adding insult to injury for the Confederacy.

SOWING POSITIVE SEEDS

by C. NaTasha Richburg for urban sentinel 12

Baltimore, Maryland, also referred to as “Charm City” according to theculturetrip.com, is nicknamed as such to capture the city’s friendly vibrancy and sense of pride. In the photography community of Charm City, Jeff and Aisha Butler reside as the proprietors of the legendary highly celebrated Jazzy Studios Photography. Jazzy Studios has continuously developed talent who have appeared in numerous places such as Playboy cologne advertisement, Vogue Magazine, Elle Magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine, Nike, Beauty Outlet, Rolling Stone Magazine, K-Swiss Shoes, Travis Winkey, Mark Jacobs, Church ministry publications, radio advertisement campaigns and more. The couple are in love with each other and in love with the photography profession as well. Though they don’t formally advertise their business, word-of-mouth has spread the news about who they are in Charm City, the surrounding county and aboard. The warm comforting environment of Jazzy Studios exudes an emotionally fulfilling vibe that makes a two-hour session feel like 15 minutes. Due to the warmth of their smiles and good humor, time moves quickly in the company of Jeff and Aisha. Oh yeah, life lessons and meaningful words of advice also cascade out of their sessions, freely given to the attentive listener. The story of the couple’s meeting is captured in this interview for the reader to understand how the craft of photography shines best when there is “love” peering through the eye of the camera. How Jeff and Aisha met… October 2001, Aisha worked as a teller at a Baltimore City credit union. One uneventful work day, she took a break outside of the building. When she returned to her teller window, Aisha asked her colleagues about a handsome brown-skinned man she noticed driving by in the parking lot. Aisha and the handsome men glanced at each other; that glance lingered in Aisha’s memory. No one else noticed the gorgeous man and thus couldn’t solve the mystery of her experience. At the time, Jeff worked at a chemical company, though his dapper appearance reflected a fashion forward sensibility. February 2002, Aisha saw Jeff again when he came to her teller window. They both wore red sweaters. Aisha was so excited

to see this man appeared before her. Aisha kept her nerves patiently anchored in the base of her stomach, only to burst into a smile when Jeff finally left the building. In other words, Aisha played it cool while she handled the transactions of her future husband. According to Aisha, Jeff flirted. According to Jeff, Aisha flirted. What matters is they both recognized the spark. Two weeks later, Jeff entered the credit union wearing a long tan cashmere coat. He headed to another teller’s window. Aisha was taking a lunchtime break and ventured to the parking lot. She purposely started a conversation with the mailman as she secretly waited for Jeff to come outside. When Jeff came outside, they had their first informal lighthearted conversation. Aisha experienced Jeff ‘s warm easygoing presence; a good fit for her personality. They were about to embark on their first date, when Jeff received an unexpected call from his mom. Though slightly sidetracked, they later went to Wendy’s for a frosty. That’s when Aisha learned her future husband loved Sade’s music. Immediately, Aisha learned to play Sade’s “Color of Love” on the keyboard. One day as Aisha waited at the counter of Popeye’s restaurant preparing to purchase her family’s Friday night chicken dinner, Jeff tapped the back of her shoulder. Aisha turned, then locked into a eye gaze with Jeff ’ and knew it was official. “My spirit jumped inside me. We officially became a couple since the tap on my shoulder represented a spiritual connection for me,” Aisha said.

In 2005, Aisha picked up a camera for the first time. “It took three years of Jeff urging me before I touched a camera,” Aisha said. As a couple, they taught hundreds of newcomers about the modeling profession throughout the years. Jeff hosts “play dates” for students where a team of aspiring makeup artists, hair stylists, fashion stylists and sponsoring boutiques act as a glam squad to prepare models for Jazzy Studios haute couture photo shoots. The synergy of the collaborative effort at Jazzy Studios creates a place of community, camaraderie, friendship and love. All who experience Jazzy Studios are guided by the joyous motivation of the couple for generating experiences that immortalize clients through photography. 14

The photos they take exude the essence of the love Jeff and Aisha have for each other and their craft. Like the other landmarks and cultural institutions of Baltimore, Jazzy Studios is a place that feels safe, trustworthy and honest. Jeff and Aisha obviously love and care about people inside and out. The community of clients and friends love them as well. Hundreds of well-wishers came through to support the couples’ Gofundme campaign to cover expenses during Jeff ’s cancer treatments. The results of the campaign far exceeded expectations. Residents of Charm City and beyond came to support the loving couple with gifts of gratitude that enabled Jeff and Aisha to keep the studio lights on. Their triumph over life trials allowed Jeff and Aisha to continue to serve the community despite COVID-19 and personal challenges. Nineteen years after Jeff and Aisha met, they continue in business together. They successfully managed the ebbs and flow of life to keep their eyes on the prize with a good worklife balance. With that in mind, Jeff and Aisha offer the following piece of advice for couples trying to successfully work together and stay happy in their marriage too. “Stay humble.” – Jeff “Regarding how we can work together; we are friends first.” – Aisha “We sowed many positive seeds as part of our photography business.” – Jeff & Aisha The photography of Jeff and Aisha continues to withstand the test of time. The couple is a Charm City treasure that embodies love and endurance. Jeff and Aisha’s impact on high fashion, print ads, heirloom-worthy family portraits, and eye-catching professional headshots fulfill the premise, invented by advertising executive Fred R. Barnard, that “a picture is worth 1,000 words.” Located in: Motor House Address: 120 W North Ave, Baltimore, MD 21201 Phone: (443) 552-5757

THE RENAISSANCE MAN OF GOSPEL

Dr.

DeWayne HARVEY by DeWayne Harvey and Reginald Kearney for urban sentinel Coined the Renaissance Man of Gospel by Dr. Bobby Jones, of Bobby Jones Gospel on BET, DeWayne Harvey makes his triumphant return to Gospel Music through the release of his first solo project, DeWayne Harvey & Friends, “What The Lord Allows”. The first single from the album, “What The Lord Allows” features Grammy, Dove, and Stellar Award winning artist, Fred Hammond. Fred Hammond recently had a number one Gospel hit with “Alright” and is known for his countless hits as a solo artist and for being one of the founding members of the iconic gospel group Commissioned. The song “What The Lord Allows” is an upbeat groovy song, written and produced, by DeWayne Harvey and is destined to be a gospel staple, and loved for many generations to come. The single was leaked to YouTube 20

and in the first 60 days without any publicity garnered over 300 K views, as it encourages the listener to understand that whatever the lord allows in their lives is still working for their good, one just has to trust God through the process. The lyric video of the song boasts over 700 K views to date. The song is so popular, in the state of Florida, that several radio stations, grabbed the song from YouTube and started to play this hit. Fred Hammond said, “DeWayne, radio is going to love this one, it’s a great song and it is very declarative, and it is what the world needs right now.” Pastor Angela Spivey, declared as only she can, “It’s a Hit my brother, and it speaks to today’s issues and how we navigate through them on purpose, knowing God is on our side”. This new album is a collection of 8 songs all written and

produced by DeWayne Harvey for Innovative Records. The songs are all co-produced by Etienne Porter (EJ), and on three of the tracks Antonio Wimberly joins in on the production team. DeWayne states that this album is unlike the previous bodies of work he has been associated with. He said, the previous albums of Unrestrained Praise and the Greater Blessings Praise Team were written with groups in mind and stayed close to the traditional gospel sound that people had become accustomed to hearing. However, this album is ultra-contemporary and even urban with heavy influences from R&B Music. The new album includes additional tracks such as “So Much I Can Do” which will feature Kelante Gavin, “Ever Really Wonder”, “Like Mike”, “Love Me Again” and “Father He Knows” just to name a few. DeWayne Harvey is an inductee in the Florida Gospel Music Hall of Fame for his previous body of work as a singer, songwriter and producer. DeWayne is known for the groups, DeWayne Harvey & Unrestrained Praise, and Pastor DeWayne Harvey & the Greater Blessings Praise Team. DeWayne Harvey & Unrestrained Praise were known for such hits as “Tell It”, “I Can See My Storm”, “Shine A Lil Light”, “Keep Looking Up” and “God Will Deliver “. While The Greater Blessings Praise Team is known for the Album “The Report of The Lord” which produced such hits as “Whose Report”, “Celebrate”, “All To Him” and “So Great”. The Report of the Lord gave DeWayne Harvey his first billboard hit, with the album peaking at number 16 on the Top Gospel Albums Chart. Most notably, DeWayne has written and produced music for Angela Spivey and Stellar Award Winner Dorothy Norwood. DeWayne Harvey for Innovative Records was the label, producer, and song writer behind Angela Spivey’s 2014, solo project, He Keeps His Promise. With this album, Angela Spivey, peaked at #14 on Billboards Top Gospel Albums Chart, peaked on Billboards Hot Gospel Chart at #16, and peaked at #16 on Billboards Gospel Airplay Chart. This album also garnered Angela Spivey & The Greater Blessings Praise Team and Innovative Records two Stellar Nominations. DeWayne says, this new solo project is full of surprises.

Through this project he will get to introduce some very talented young artists who have bright careers. These artist’s include Jasmin McClover who joins him on three tracks “Ever Really Wonder”, “Like Mike”, and “Father He Knows”, Alyssa White who joins him on “Love Me Again” and Raleigh Mosley, who also adds his vocals to “Father He Knows”. This is also the first release for his Innovative Records Label since 2015, but to make up for lost time, the record company will be dropping two additional new artists, Anita Franklin’s “Because of You” in April 2021, which DeWayne is featured on and Jasmin McClover’s, Just Jazz in October 2021. DeWayne Harvey began his musical career in 1970 at 3 years old, when his mother said as a child, he had to sing in the adult choir at Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church. Dorothy Ford stated, my son, had to have the same outfit that the choir had on and if we had robes, he had to have one made just like us. She says music was definitely in his heart. DeWayne comes from a singing family, as his mom and his aunts had a group called the Harvey Sisters and his uncles had a quartet singing group as well. Soon after DeWayne Harvey formed the group, DeWayne Harvey & Unrestrained Praise, his family members joined the group and added their rich vocals to his unique sound. DeWayne credits his love for gospel music to his Aunt Olivia Harvey, who taught and nurtured his gift from an early age. Although the DeWayne Harvey and Friends project is DeWayne’s first solo project, DeWayne is no stranger to the gospel music arena. He has had the awesome opportunity to share the stage with Vickie Winans, Dorinda Clark Cole, Dorothy Norwood, Byron Cage, Daryl Cooley, Jekalyn Carr, J.J. Hariston and Youthful Praise, Mali Music, and so many others. DeWayne says, over the years he was inspired by such artists as Andre Crouch, Walter Hawkins, Donald Lawrence, Shirley Caesar, Albertina Walker, Joe Legon, Harvey Watkins, The Winans and Commissioned. DeWayne Harvey credits much of his success to Bishop Leonard Scott, Pastor Bryant Scott, AL the Bishop Hobbs, and most of

DeWayne Harvey is not only a recording artist, producer, and label executive but he also serves as the CEO of Innovative Health Care Management Services, Inc. which for years owned and operated nursing homes, assisted living facilities, independent living facilities, and rehab clinics. DeWayne is also the Pastor of a thriving church in Tallahassee, Florida known as the Greater Blessings Tabernacle of Praise.

What was the inspiration for your song “What The Lord Allows”? Long story there. I started writing the song in 2015 but it didn’t feel right at the time so I put it on the shelf, thinking I’d get back to finishing the song later. Six years later I revisited “What The Lord Allows” after a period of not singing and focusing on other matters, which was very frustrating. The song came back to me on my way to church one Sunday and I taught it to my praise group within five minutes.

Dr. Harvey is professionally trained as a Health Care Administrator, a nurse, a professional guardian, a community association manager, and a grant writer. Dr. Harvey holds several degrees including an Associate Degree in Registered Nursing, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a minor in Accounting, a master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Health Care Management, and a Doctorate Degree in Health Administration. Dr. Harvey is the founder of the Innovative School of Health, which specializes in training Certified Nursing Assistants.

Recently the Urban Sentinel had the opportunity to interview Pastor Harvey Tell the readers about “Who is Dewayne Harvey”? DeWayne Harvey is a child of God, a creator of music, a minister, a leader, a husband, father, grandfather, a business owner, a medical professional, a singer, a songwriter. The song is awesome-How long have you had a relationship with Fred Hanmmond? Will you be doing any more collaborations with Fred in the future? I’ve known Fred for a long time and doing future collaborations depends on our schedules. We’re both very busy people! Who else have you done collaborations with? Both of my latest singles – “Ever Really Wonder” and “Like Mike” – are collaborations. “Like Mike” has Jasmine McClover and “Ever Really Wonder” features Jasmine with C3 (Christopher McKever). Please tell us about your record label? Innovative Records is the label I own and it’s my way of giving back to the music world by mentoring and producing other acts. Jasmine McClover is one and I produced Angela Spivey’s record “He Keeps His Promise” which hit Billboard’s Top 20 Gospel charts. Tell us about your work with the Rosa Park Foundation? How did you become involved? A consultant who works for my publicity firm Double XXposure Media Relations brought the song ‘What The Lord Allows” to the attention of Rhea McCauley, the head of The Rosa Parks Family Foundation. They chose to endorse the song during the remembrance of December

1st 1955 when Ms. Parks refused to give up her seat on the Montgomery city bus – thus sparking the Civil Rights Movement. We’ll be continuing this remembrance into January 2022 for Dr. King’s birthday, well into Black History Month in February. How does it feel to get the Foundation's endorsement of your song “What The Lord Allows?” It’s a blessing, an honor and a privilege to receive this wonderful endorsement from the Foundation. Where do you and the Foundation stand when it comes to the legal issues and fundraising surrounding the house of the late Ms. Rosa Parks? How can the public support

the foundation? The house legally belongs to the Foundation and right now it’s being held in storage in Italy by one who worked on rebuilding the house yet refuses to return it. Ms. Parks’ home needs to come back to the states but the Foundation is challenged by legal bills on both sides of the Atlantic Folks can help support the Rosa Parks Family Foundation by going to their Go Fund Me page https://gofund.me/fc017112 What does the future hold for Dewayne Harvey? Getting my album ready for release in 2022, making more music and always serving the Lord.

COVID-19 and its effect on

businesses by Felix Iziomoh, Lead Consultant - BeeFlex Consultancy Ltd for urban sentinel

Livelihoods are at stake in Africa as a result of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Some individuals have taken to their fate and accept that they will rather die from the Virus than stay at home and die from hunger. People have accepted to leave with COVID-19 for a conceivable future but with strict obedience to wearing of nose mask / facemask, liquid hand wash and use of hand sanitizers. As the number of infected cases keep increasing more deaths are been recorded, the lockdowns have generated several job losses, increases in mental health issues, domestic violence, child molestation and even rape. Security issues are not left out, as more people feel compelled to turn to crime to survive, especially those who live on daily incomes. When the virus came into Africa early this year, February to be precise, individuals and businesses experienced financial suffering, lifestyle and behaviours changed over time. Some individuals still feel life will return to normal before the end of the year. From my conversation with friends who run small businesses, there is need to adjust or find a selling tactics that will help increase sales. When coronavirus started in Wuhan, China before spreading to other countries, the world changed and individual lifestyles, behaviours

28

and businesses began to change. People began to practice the physical / social distancing when they go out, some did their shopping online during the lockdown while some companies instructed their employees to work from home, but how effective is the service delivery to customers? People now prefer to shop online but how secure is my data or information? This is one of the question a friend asked me during our discussion on this issue, was it the same before Covid-19? People prefer to shop online and have the items deliver to them due to the safety and endangering themselves of the virus. They are avoiding the physical distancing and wearing of nose mask, washing of hands and hand sanitizers. Businesses will have to scan their service delivery models, since the pandemic, people have changed their shopping habits; consumers are looking for shopping solutions that are suitable and safe. Lifestyle and behaviours have changed, shopping routines have also changed, some people prefer to go cashless using their debit cards to make payments , since cash is seen as a higher risk for payment, mobile money transfer have been widely used as a form of payment rather than cash. Also, many shop outlets as well as small business owners have adopted to innovate to the use of point -of -sale device (POS) for any cash transactions. This is precisely

why so many businesses are forceful about going online in a bid to reach customers wherever they are. They are strong, not only to protect their revenue, but to protect their brands by demonstrating social responsibility at a time when modern humanity is at its most vulnerable. Consumer behaviour and lifestyle is now different across the world. Companies need to recognize the right information to make that will help drive their business to provide a better competitive edge. To stop the current effect of the pandemic, business owners need to find alternative ways to earn by thinking up new problems they can solve in the current situation. Businesses must find ways to key into the new economy being created by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic continues to spreads across, companies can help keep staff and consumers safe by following strict recommendations from the health officials. Following the best ways of hand washing, social/ physical distancing,

disinfecting procedures and wearing masks show that companies cares about the health and safety of staff, consumers and the community. In conclusion, small business can follow the below points to stay in business during this period. · Look for new opportunities · Expand supply or identify alternative sources to prevent running out of stock: · Leverage temporary workforces from those who have lost their jobs or looking for additional jobs during this period. · Assess realistic consumer demand because people’s needs and preferences may have changed: · Leverage digital platforms to find suppliers, market to sell goods Business owners should also request for stimulus or intervention funds to return to profit ways. © Felix Iziomoh, +2347038222687, f.iziomoh@beeflexconsult.com

Give Yourself MORE, Manifest YOU in 2022

S P I RI T UA L NO U RI S H M E N T B RO U GH T TO YO U B Y URBAN SENTINEL AND UPSHIFT GLOBAL by Ambassador Dr. Anita Davis DeFoe for urban sentinel The New Year is here and now it is time for all of us to get busy with the business of making various aspects of our lives fulfill the desires of our hearts. The year 2021 was indeed a year filled with test and testimonies, trials and tribulations, transformation, and triumphs. With the dawning of each day, we are blessed with yet another opportunity to to journey in purpose and choose what we will do, and who we will become. Decide to manifest YOU in 2022!! Before you can begin that process, you must first make sure that you have officially shut down all of your 2021 operations, that you have brought last year to closure, and that you have learned and heeded the lessons wrought from your 2021 experiences. The past is gone so truly you must leave it there. So, if that means you need to have a good cry, a shout to rid your body of emotional toxins, begin a journal or write a letter to express what you are feeling inside, do it, so that you can bring your “whole self, whole heart, whole spirit” into the New Year. Dwelling in the past is one of the most dangerous dream snatchers around, and far too many of us for, definitely for far too long, hold on tightly to past hurts, broken promises, even unproductive relationships and we become stuck. Instead of us seeking release and moving forward, we dance on fleeting memories and cling to past experiences, wrapping ourselves tightly in this negativity, becoming entirely too comfortable with feelings that we need to let go. Finding spiritual and personal healing is the gateway to personal achievement. Being a “whole” person unlocks the floodgates to opportunity, inner peace, and joyful tranquility. Before you can get about the living you seek for 2022, putting 2021 in its proper perspective is a definite

must. I urge you as you read the musings of someone who shares your desire for personal and career satisfaction, for business growth and success, to decide exactly what you want to achieve and go forward to achieve it with the determination of a colorful kite on a windy day. Whatever it is, write it down with some specific steps that will carry you to your desired journey’s end. With that done, all that remains is for you to simply get busy. Tomorrow is certainly not promised so there is no good reason to put off till tomorrow what you can start doing today. With that in mind, I say to everyone as you read these words, decide today to “Give yourself MORE and manifest you in 2022.” MORE self-love, MORE self-respect, MORE self-pampering…..MORE determination, MORE faith… MORE hope…MORE compassion…MORE opportunities to pursue your dreams….MORE chances to develop positive relationships with family and friends….MORE occasions of personal and career joy, and MORE choices that contribute to your becoming the person that you desire, that individual that answers to the call of your true spirit. What is MORE? MORE is Maximizing Our Resources Effectively in support of our own personal good. Take your gifts and talents off of the shelves and use them; dust off your hopes and dreams and pursue them, muster up your purpose and persistence and achieve them. Decide to earnestly give yourself a chance, and definitely decide to “Give Yourself MORE, and manifest YOU in 2022.”

FOR YOUR HEALTH

The Heart of the Matter –High Blood Pressure by dr. lenore t. coleman for the urban sentinel PRESIDENT, HEALING OUR VILLAGE

www.hovhealth.com

Introduction It is estimated that nearly 1 out of 2 adults in the United States have hypertension. That works out to roughly 108 million Americans. High blood pressure or "hypertension," as it is also known, is one of the most dangerous diseases in our country. You could have high blood pressure and not even know it-that's why it's often called the "silent killer." Approximately 32% of people with high blood pressure don't know they have it. There are usually no warning signs for high blood pressure If left untreated, hypertension can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. High blood pressure was a primary or contributing cause of death for more than 494,873 people in the United States in 2018. High blood pressure costs the United States about $131 billion each year, averaged over 12 years from 2003 to 2014. In most cases, we don't know what causes high blood pressure. But the good news is that it can be treated, and there are things that you can do to reduce your chances of getting high blood pressure.

What is blood pressure and why is it harmful? Arteries carry blood from the heart to all parts of the body. The force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is Blood Pressure. Each time the heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries. Blood pressure is highest when the heart contracts and is pumping blood; this is called your systolic pressure. Between beats, when the heart is at rest, the blood pressure falls; this is called your diastolic pressure. High blood pressure causes the blood vessels to get stiff and narrow. This makes the heart have to work harder to get the blood through your vessels. High blood pressure can

36

also weaken the lining of the arteries and veins so that it is more susceptible to cholesterol deposits. This narrowing of the blood vessels throughout the body can lead to problems with the heart, kidneys, brain and the eyes.

Measuring Your Blood Pressure A blood pressure measurement is given as two numbers. When written, for example, the numbers might be 120/80; this blood pressure, when spoken, is "120 over 80." The higher (top) number (120) is the systolic pressure, while the lower (bottom) number (80) is the diastolic pressure. These numbers are measurements of millimeters (mm) of mercury (Hg). A blood pressure reading of less than 130/80 for adults is considered normal (including high normal); a reading below 120/80 is even better (see chart below). The goal or target blood pressure for African Americans is 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure is grouped by stages, and the higher the number, the more serious the problem. Persons with diabetes require the lowest levels of blood pressure in order to achieve protection from heart attacks and stroke. It is most important that blood pressure is aggressively treated in people with diabetes.

Are there certain ethnic groups at increased risk?

• Overweight, obese and sedentary lifestyle • Fewer physician visits • Do not take their medications as prescribed • Genetic factors

What are the signs and symptoms of high blood pressure?

• Dizziness • Headaches • Blurred Vision • Rapid Heartbeat

Treatment of High Blood Pressure

African Americans in the United States have the highest rate of hypertension in the WORLD. There are many theories why that is true. Many experts feel it is due to unhealthy lifestyles, eating TOO MUCH SALT and the lack of coping strategies for the STRESS and STRAIN of “BLACK LIFE”. As of 2016, nearly 58% of black men and about 53% of black women in the U.S. had high blood pressure. Thirty percent (30%) of all deaths in African American men and twenty percent (20%) of all deaths in African American women are due to high blood pressure. African Americans are four times more likely to have hypertension than Caucasians. Hypertension runs in families. If you have a family history of hypertension, make sure that everyone in your immediate and extended family gets his or her blood pressure checked regularly. The hypertension that you see in African Americans is more severe and occurs at an earlier age. High blood pressure causes damage to the heart and blood vessels that can lead to heart disease and stroke. African Americans die 50% times more frequently from heart disease and 80% more frequently from strokes. Twenty- six percent (26%) of all new cases of kidney failure each year is due to high blood pressure. There are several factors that contribute to the high blood pressure seen in African Americans: • Eat a diet high in salt • Do not eat or drink enough potassium and calcium in their diet

When you find out that you have high blood pressure, it is important that you understand that it can be controlled but not cured. You must make the decision to take control of your condition and make the changes in your lifestyle that will be necessary to control your blood pressure. It is not going to be easy, but there are a few simple steps that you can take. Stop smoking- Even 1-3 cigarettes per day can increase your risk for heart attacks and stroke, so you must QUIT altogether. Limit your alcohol intake- No more than one glass of alcohol per day ( I glass = 4 oz. of wine, 12 oz. of beer, or I oz. of 80 proof spirits). Cut down on salt- The average American diet contains 25 grams of sodium. If you have high blood pressure, you should eat no more than 2 grams (2000 mg) of sodium per day. Avoid foods that are high in salt (potato chips, deli meats, canned soups). Use herbs and spices to season your food instead of seasoning salt. Read the nutrition labels of the foods that you eat and count every mg. Lose weight- 160 million Americans are either overweight or obese. Currently 60% of the US population is overweight and 33% are obese. African Americans have more obesity than Caucasians. We are now seeing an epidemic of obesity in our children, especially teenagers. Being overweight can place an increased burden on the heart and can make your hypertension worse. It is important that we begin taking off the excess weight by combining regular exercise with a wellbalanced, low-fat diet.

Medication Compliance Two-thirds of all Americans fail to take any or all of their prescription medications. Almost 29% of Americans stop taking their medications before they run out. Twelve percent (12%) of Americans do not take their medications after they buy the prescription. Here are some helpful hints to improve your compliance with your medication regimen. 1. Always get your medication filled on time and from the same pharmacy so that they can have a complete record of your medication history. 2. Don't stop taking a prescribed medication because your symptoms have gone away, or you feel better. High blood pressure is a chronic condition that will require long-term treatment. 3. Always check with your doctor before you stop taking a medication 4. If you are experiencing side effects from your medications, mention it to your doctor so that they can change or modify your medication regimen 5. If you miss taking a medication DO NOT DOUBLE UP 6. If you are seeing multiple physicians make sure they ALL know what medications you are taking. 7. Keep a written record of the medications that you are taking. There are a number of FREE apps that you can download to your phone that can help you keep track of your medications 8. Do not share or borrow medications for other people. 9. Store your medications in a cool, dry place. Always check the expiration date to make sure your medications have not expired. Taking expired medications can lead to complications. 10. If you have high blood pressure, check with your pharmacist before you buy over the counter (OTC) medications. Some of these medications, cold and cough 38

syrups for example can increase your blood pressure.

New Advances in the Management of High Blood pressure – Remote Patient Monitoring Have you ever heard of “White coat hypertension”, or “White Coat Syndrome”? This is a condition that occurs commonly in patients with high blood pressure. When some patients go to the doctor their blood pressure is higher than normal due to the tension or stress from being in a doctor’s office. There is also “Masked hypertension” which produces the opposite effect – normal readings in the doctor’s office, but higher readings away from the office. In both cases, providers aren’t able to get an accurate analysis of a patient’s blood pressure and are thus unable to determine whether that patient needs further treatment. Now we have technology enabled care that allows patients to take their blood pressure at home with Bluetooth enabled (wireless) blood pressure cuffs. The blood pressure readings go up into the Cloud (internet) and the readings are available for your healthcare team (physician, health educator, case manager or pharmacist). These platforms can also alert your physician if your systolic or diastolic pressure get into the DANGER ZONE. This new technology finally provides patients the comfort of knowing that someone on their healthcare TEAM is constantly monitoring their blood pressure readings and therefore intervening immediately through telehealth e-visit or a telephone call. For more information regarding Remote Patient Monitoring Contact Healing Our Village at 800 788 0941.

Medications for High Blood Pressure Currently, there are multiple medications that can be used to treat high blood pressure. In order to achieve a goal blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg, many African American patients may require 2-3 different medications taken at the same time. The different classes of medications have specific mechanisms of action. Most African Americans will require a diuretic (water pill) to reach their goal blood pressure. Table I (Chart from helio.com) provides the information regarding some of the common medications used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It is important that you take your medications as prescribed.

Fail Your Way to Success

S P I RI T UA L NO U RI S H M E N T B RO U GH T TO YO U B Y URBAN SENTINEL AND UPSHIFT GLOBAL by Ambassador Dr. Anita Davis DeFoe for urban sentinel “The road to success is always laced with challenges.” We have all read this in books, we’ve heard others say it, but how many of us truly believe it. Far too many of us believe that our road to success would be swifter is we simply had more money, more brains, or the right connections. Granted each of these things may possibly open a door or two for you, but rarely can these things alone keep opportunity and success coming your way. On the flip side, each of us probably knows someone who has one or all of these advantages, yet they are still not achieving the level of personal success that they desire. To make it to the “Land of Success,” persistence and determination are often more valuable commodities than some of the things we think are essential to “making it.” As far as the quest for success goes, even more important I dare say is “how one views and responds to failure.” The vast majority of us let our fear of failure keep us from actively pursuing success. The vast majority of us cling to failure and relive that devastating event daily in our minds and replay the event repeatedly in our hearts. Instead of learning from the experience, most of us allow this temporary setback we call “failure” to place fear in our spirits, ultimately making us deeply afraid to continue chasing our dreams. One’s view and ability to deal with failure is critical, for our prospective regarding failure tend to impact every aspect of our lives. We all plan for success and we make long lists of things we will do when we succeed, but we rarely plan for handling failure. Rarely do we prepare mentally for life’s inevitable obstacles and challenges that can and will confront us. Of course, no one sets out planning to fail, but the reality of the human experience is that not all of the choices we make will be right for the situation at hand, nor will all of the roads we decide to take contribute positively to the achievement 40

of a desired goal. Most of us go through life not understanding that failure is only a step in the process that leads to our success. Instead of viewing failure as finality, as a nail in our personal coffins, failure should be seen as an opportunity for us to “ find answers in life’s untimely resistant effect.” Too often we label isolated events as failures, focusing not on the big picture, but on a single wrong turn taken while making the journey to success. Once we understand that occasional failure is unavoidable; failure is not an event but merely an indicator that you did not consider or master all of the steps needed to achieve your goal; failure is in the eye of the beholder because you ultimately are the one who chooses to label an event as a failure; and failure is not a stigma or the enemy. Only then are we truly prepared to unlock the gateway to our personal success and fulfillment. Most of the people that we view as being successful will quickly tell you that everything that led to their success also came from past failure. Hard as it is to accept, there is benefit in every event that occurs in our lives. These occurrences and difficult challenges provide invaluable life lessons and countless opportunities for improvement. Navigating these trying seas enables us to anchor onto the shores of personal achievement. Vow to make failure your friend, for through failure we are all able to find success. Remember failure is only a temporary, isolated incident, not a life sentence designed to hold us forever hostage. As you journey toward your goals, ask yourself, if failure was not even a possibility, what would I seek to do? Then stare the possibility of failure directly in the face, smile and with courage go forth and passionately pursue your potential!!!!

But I mean I really, really love it because I'm lucky to have been born in December so the whole month is my celebration and everywhere is festive so how can you not love that your birthday month is literally a worldwide celebration of beautiful lights, decorations, happy people spreading cheer! How could anyone not love that their birthday month does that? But for some reason, this year just did not have that excitement for me. I mean the world is literally upside down. There is so much loss in so many ways. And so many people have left this earth this year alone and that has caused so much pain everywhere to so many families. And to top things off, I got the dreaded Mr Vid and was suffering with that on my birthday in December! And unfortunately I didn’t have the one with no symptoms, I had the full out flu, aching, sniffles, constant sinus headache, no smell, no taste and no appetite and trust me, until you experience no taste you will never understand how much color that adds to our life! Thankfully, some people mustered up enough energy to still be festive and I applaud them for keeping things in perspective. But you know what? Tis was the season and after I recovered, I had to muster up some energy to get into it and enjoy my beautiful birthday month and the holiday season because the world was still celebrating what we did have and what we had not lost! I had to become thankful that the world was carrying on and slowly, but surely, it is trying to reset itself. I, in turn, looked around and saw my blessings in the form of the 3 amazing people that call me mommy and the husband that I was blessed to join my life with just recently and my health and a body that had fought for me to recover and won! And I was mostly thankful for a God who continues to be as good as he always has been and promises to be. And now here we are at the dawn of a new year. A time to sit back, breathe, and be grateful that we get to see another one because in these uncertain times, this is certainly a blessing. Those of us with our family intact and a semblance of happiness and normalcy need to be ecstatic because we

made it to 2022. Those of us entering a new year without someone or are experiencing health issues; our hearts and prayers are with you and ask that you call on your friends and loved ones for the support and not go it alone. And let us all count our blessings and reach out to those in need in our respective communities and lives. A new year among other things is also the perfect time to REFLECT, ASSESS and CORRECT. Reflect on the last 12 months to see what was done that was right and good and to reflect on all relationships good and bad and assess everything and everyone for their contribution and value in your life. Assess the impact that they had on all parts of your life to see if it was more positive than negative. And mostly to correct; correct what was wrong, clean house if need be; embrace what was good and celebrate all of the blessings. When new year rings in so many people are filled with regrets and waste their energy on “should have, would have and could have”. Others are ready with the resolutions that often lose steam somewhere along the line. So in the midst of being thankful let us make some commitments together for this New Year that continues to be filled with uncertainty and be certain about what we are in control of. So let us make promises that we can keep. Promise to give more this year Promise to see more this year Promise to love more this year Promise to savour more this year Promise to say thanks more this year Promise to do more of what you want this year Promise to be healthier this year And promise to pray more this year And most of all promise yourself to live life to the fullest this year. It is a new one so ready set go. Make 2022 a year that counts! Follow me on Instagram @realcatherinetyson.
