Studying for Test
Then figure out how long each subject will take. For example, a weekly Spanish verb test probably won't be as intense as a big history test. So you won't need to set aside as much study time for the Spanish test — and if you break it up into a short amount every night, that's even better. Another study technique is called "chunking" — breaking large topics down into chunks. Let's say you have a history test on World War II. Instead of thinking about studying all of World War II (which could overwhelm even a historian), try breaking your study sessions into 2-year chunks or studying the material by specific battles.
You just heard you have a math test on Friday — the same day as your big history test and weekly quiz on Spanish verbs. Are they crazy? How will you get all your studying done? Don't panic. There are some secrets to good studying. If you follow them, you'll be able to take all three tests with confidence. Start Studying in School Studying for tests and quizzes actually starts way before you even know you'll have a test. Good study techniques begin in the classroom as you take notes. Note-taking is a way of remembering what you were taught or what you've read about. Some keys to note-taking are to write down facts that a teacher mentions or writes on the board during class. If you miss something, ask your teacher to go over facts with you after class. Other keys to good note-taking are keeping notes organized by subject and making sure notes are easy to read and review. (This may mean that you need to recopy some notes at home or during a free period while the class is still fresh in your mind.) Unfortunately, most schools don't have classes that teach you how to take note. When it comes to taking good notes, it can take some experimenting to figure out what works, so don't give up. Time Management When you sit down to study, think about how much time you want to devote to each topic. This will keep you from getting overwhelmed. If it's Monday, and you've got those three tests on Friday, figure out how much time you need for studying between now and then.
When you've decided on a manageable amount of work, consider how long you need to study it. Most people can really concentrate for about 45 minutes — after that you'll probably want to take a short break. If you find yourself getting distracted and thinking about other things as you study, pull your attention back as soon as possible. Remind yourself that when your 45 minutes of studying are up, you can take a 15-minute break. How to Study As you study, review your notes and any special information from your textbook. In the case of math or science problems or equations, do some practice problems. Pay special attention to anything the teacher seemed to stress in class. (This is where good note-taking comes in handy!) Many teachers tell students ahead of time what the format of an exam will be. This can help you tailor how you study. For example, if you know you are going to have multiple-choice questions on World War II, you'll know to focus on studying facts and details. On the other hand, if the exam will contain essay questions, you'll want to think about which topics are most likely to be covered. Then come up with several possible essay topics and use your notes, books, and other reference sources to figure out how you might answer questions on those topics. When trying to memorize dates, names, or other factual information, keep in mind that it usually takes a number of tries to remember something correctly (that's one reason why it's a good idea to start studying well in advance of a test). Use special memory triggers that the teacher may have suggested or ones that you invent yourself. Read things over several times if you need to, and write down any phrases or thoughts that will help you remember main ideas or concepts. 4
Some people find it helps to teach what they're studying aloud to an imaginary student. Or work with a study partner and take turns teaching aloud. Another study technique is making flashcards that summarize some of the important facts or concepts. You can then use these to review for a test. I'll Study Tomorrow and Other Excuses It's tempting to put off studying until the last minute (also known as procrastination). Unfortunately, by the time students get to high school there's so much going on that there's usually no room for procrastination. If you're a procrastinator (and who isn't sometimes?), one of the best ways to overcome it is by staying organized. After you've written test dates and project due dates on a calendar, it's hard to ignore them. And sitting down to organize and plan your work really highlights how much time things take.
Studying in a Crowd Study groups are also helpful because you can work together to come up with ways to remember concepts and then test one another. For some people who are easily distracted, though, study groups spell disaster because they get off the topic. When you're with a bunch of friends or classmates, you may spend more time hanging out than actually studying. One way to ensure quiet and focus when studying with a group is to do it in the library. You'll be forced to keep things more low-key than if you're at someone's kitchen table. In the end, it comes down to what works best for you. If you like to study alone and feel most confident doing it that way, that's great. If you think you'd like to work in a group, try it out — just be aware of the drawbacks. The Payoff

Your teachers will give you plenty of notice on important tests so you have enough time to study for the type of exam you'll be taking. But what if you're feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff you have to do? Are classes or extracurricular activities limiting your time to study properly? Ask your teachers for help prioritizing.
Most of all, don't panic if you can't remember some facts the night before the test. Even if you've spent all evening studying, the brain needs time to digest all that information. You may need to involve the people in charge of your activities - such as your coach or music or drama teacher — in working out a solution. College News Filling Out College Applications The most important thing to remember is that you’re not completing the application all by yourself. You will usually need at least one recommendation from a teacher or school counselor, and you need official copies of your grades and test scores sent as well. Make sure you give everyone the necessary forms and plenty of time to get them to the colleges of your choice. Give yourself plenty of time. Distinguish yourself from other applicants. You need to list any academic honors you’ve received since 9th grade – honor roll, National Merit Society, and the like – as well as extracurricular activities in which you’ve participated since you began high school. Notable achievements from before the 9th grade can be included, but you need to have done something truly extraordinary. “Extracurricular” really means anything that’s not a required part of your school program. Maybe you joined your school’s tennis team or volunteered at a soup kitchen or have a really cool stamp collection. They all count as extracurricular's. Colleges like to see what kind of person you are apart from your grades and test scores. The more well-rounded you are, the better your application will look to admissions departments. If you’ve had part-time or summer jobs in high school, colleges want to know about them. It will help show that you’re responsible and capable. Don’t be shy about listing your work experience!

Chani especially enjoys working with The YMCA because it gives her the platform to speak to youth on Issues like HIV/AIDS, she feels it’s a great opportunity and that if she can save one teen from making a mistake she would have done a her job. Chani’s advice to other teens who would like to pursue a career in the music industry is “ follow your dreams and never give up on yourself, expect a lot of work, but stick to it”. Also due to release this fall is Chani’s first book titled “ I want to Live: A Teen’s Guide to Finding Self-Love.” adding teen author to her list of accomplishments as well as her new reality show “Coming Up Christie” debuting this fall as well. Fitness: Liz's Story

I've played field hockey since the eighth grade. I am now a varsity player entering my senior year of high school, but I have to admit that I wasn't always physically fit. I was a scrawny little kid who was always the shortest and most petite in my class. My mom had always feared that if I played competitive sports, I'd get hurt by aggressive players. So I wasn't very athletically involved during my childhood.
The first day of practice was one of the hardest workouts I've ever had. It was a lot of running for me, especially since I decided to participate in the long-distance events. Fortunately, I wasn't the only slow runner trying to get into shape. A few others were on the same level as me with a similar goal. Day after day we supported and cheered each other on during practices and meets. As the season progressed, I found that I could run longer, faster, and without as much pain as I used to.
When I entered middle school, a lot of my friends were signing up for the school's sports teams. One of my friends convinced me to try out for the soccer team with her. I had played a little bit of soccer before, so I figured that it wouldn't be too bad since I already knew the rules and how to dribble, pass, and shoot. On the first day of tryouts, I entered the field feeling quite optimistic until the coach told us to run laps for warm-up. Bells and whistles went off in my head because I knew that I could not run for very long without getting really tired. As I struggled to keep up with the team, I found myself falling farther and farther behind until I was the last one to finish.
From Humiliated to Motivated Before we could even get a water break, the coach then made us do sprints back and forth across the field! I was so exhausted that by the time we did dribbling and passing drills I barely had any strength left to kick the ball! After tryouts were over, my name never made it on the list. I was disappointed, but at the same time, I expected it. It was at that moment that I knew I had to do something about my health and fitness. I didn't want to be humiliated like that again. When springtime rolled around, I made a big decision to sign up for the track and field team. People thought I was crazy because I ran a slow 11-minute mile in gym class, but I was deter-
One of the happiest days of my life was the last meet of the season when my mile time was 9 minutes. I could not believe that I had cut my time down by 2 minutes in just one season! It was painful and a lot of work, but the results were definitely worth it. Eighth grade soon rolled around and I was feeling really confident about trying out for another fall sport. Instead of attempting soccer a second time, I decided to give field hockey a try. Again, the coach instructed us to run a lot of laps and sprints. This time, I was well prepared. After a week of tryouts, I was ecstatic to see that my name made it on the list. I was inspired. I even took up kung-fu lessons in addition to being on both the track and field and hockey teams. Being in shape helped me feel energized, flexible, and strong. I also felt accomplished: My best mile time ever was 6½ minutes — a long way from the 11 minutes that I started with. After I got fit I learned another important lesson: Once you do get into shape, In high school, juggling all my athletic activities and schoolwork during my freshman and sophomore years was challenging but not impossible. But then junior year rolled around and I had the added responsibilities of planning for college, scholarships, PSATs, SATs, and finding a job so I could buy gas for my car. It became almost impossible to manage my time. The job gave me gas money, but it wore me out so much that I would often come home at night exhausted. Halfway through the year, I gave up some of my commitments to focus on priorities: Since I want to go to art school, I decided to spend more time on my artwork and my academics and less time on sports. I quit taking kung-fu lessons after 3 years of training and I quit track early in my fifth season. I knew my fitness would suffer, but I pledged to run on weekends and whenever I had free time. Unfortunately, I didn't keep my own promise. When I did have free time, I spent it going out with friends or catching up on sleep. I could feel my body getting more and more sluggish, but I kept telling myself that I would run the next day.
