Beautiful From the Inside Out By: Kimberly Coventry, MS, CNC

honest. If not, let's go through this journey together to figure out how we can get you to where you need to be. It is possible-I promise. When I was in my teens and early 20's, I really struggled with a positive self-image. I looked okay on the outside, but the inside of me was always in turmoil with external feedback. It wasn't until I was able to take some steps to learn to love myself, let go of perfectionism, and really embrace who I was that I became truly happy. It's really strange, but once I was able to just accept who I was, I felt free.

This evening, I had the opportunity to be a judge in a high school Pageant that awarded college scholarships, and it proved to be a huge eye opener for me. Throughout the interview process, swimwear competition and evening gown finale, it was amazing to me to see how some were so unsure of themselves, and others were beautiful from the inside out. It got me thinking, how in the world can some of these young ladies differ so much in confidence at the tender age of 18? Everyone obviously has a different upbringing, but how they actually feel about themselves is totally up to them. We have all heard of numerous stories of kids growing up that were told they were not going to amount to anything in life, and they still overcame great odds and were hugely successful as an adult. So my conclusion is that it is not so much the external influences, but the internal influences. What do I mean by this? I think you are the only one who can establish yourself as being beautiful from the inside out. Think about it-how many times have you received a compliment and you said, "Oh, no, that's not really true, I actually looked horrible in that picture"...? If this is what you are saying out loud to others, what I felt as if all the pressure was released off of my are you saying to yourself? Or have you noticed a shoulders, and I could just be myself. Dating Tips For Guys By: Nathan Hall

If you want several first date tips for teenagers then buckle down on your chair because you've just found the right site. There are moments when teens find it tough to go out with a girl. There are constantly problems such as an empty wallet, overmuch nervousness, hiding from your parents and more. But we're certain you'll get through it once you absorb all this information. Perhaps your buddies gave you loads of ideas, or your mom told you to take the girl to a movie and that's very nice of them but you're becoming an independent person now and you should think for yourself. Even if others wish you the best they probably don't consider themselves dating gurus. If you want a victorious first date you need to have loads of enjoyment, then have the chance to be isolated with your date and lastly, have an interactive environment. Having a blast is well achieved when you're both pleased with the date. So go ahead and choose several first date ideas that you'll feel comfy with and then propose them to her, see what she likes. You can go dancing or to play pool. You'll have more fun playing a game with her than watching a movie together. Take her to the nearest 10

Skating ring or ride the bike together. One of the best first date tips for boys, is to find an interactive environment for your date, where you have plenty of opportunities to interact with her. Don't take her to to a concert, to a show or to the theater. Other people might encourage you to try these ideas but they are bad ideas for a first date. If you go to a movie you can't even speak with her, that's zero interaction with her. You have to be able to speak to each other so go somewhere quiet enough. Maybe a theater is a better idea than a cinema but if you really want to get refined you could go with her to a museum. At least there's more interactivity. Find a place where there's only the 2 of you. If you decide to go bike riding or skating choose a spot where none of your friends usually go. The people you know might distract you; you might be inclined to act in a different way. Take her to an ice cream walk in the park. You'll have the opportunity to be more intimate with her. Or take her on a boat ride. Yea perhaps it's overly romantic for you, but for her it'll be marvelous. With these first date tips for

teenagers you can now feel positive and plan a thriving date. All you have to keep in in mind is to make it fun, interactive and give yourselves the chance to be alone. Now, go and practice these everlasting first date tips. Good luck!

5 Ways to Reach a Healthy Weight (and Maintain!) a Healthy Weight Diets aren't the way to go when it comes to losing weight. That's because they create temporary eating patterns — and, therefore, temporary results. Most dieters gain back any lost weight when they go back to their old eating habits. So what's the best way to drop excess weight? Create a new normal! Weight loss is most likely to be successful when people change their habits, replacing old, unhealthy ones with new, healthy behaviors. Here are 5 ways to make that happen: 1. Exercise. Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscle — both of which help you look and feel good and keep weight off. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things that increase your daily level of activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, increase the intensity of your workout and add some strength exercises to build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren't exercising. 2. Reduce screen time. One reason people get less exercise these days is because of an increase in "screen time" — the amount of time spent watching TV, looking at the computer, or playing video games. Limit recreational screen time to less than 2 hours per day. If you're with friends at the mall, you're getting more exercise than if you're IMing them from your room.

4. Eat 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Fruits and veggies are about more than just vitamins and minerals. They're also packed with fiber, which means they fill you up. And when you fill up on fruits and veggies, you're less likely to overeat when it comes to high-calorie foods like chips or cookies. 5. Don't skip breakfast. Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism, burning calories from the get-go and giving you energy to do more during the day. People who skip breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than they would have if they ate breakfast. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend to have higher BMIs than people who eat breakfast.

3. Watch out for portion distortion. Portion sizes are bigger than they used to be, and these extra calories contribute to obesity. Another key factor in weight gain is that more people drink sugary beverages, such as sodas, juice drinks, and sports drinks. So choose smaller portions (or share restaurant portions) and go for water or low-fat milk instead of soda. 14

Back to School After a summer of sleeping in or doing things on your time, the alarm bell announcing that first day of school can be a rude awakening. Whether you're an anxious new freshman or a confident senior, heading back to school signals a time of transition: new classes, new teachers, new schedules, and a new social scene. Dread it or love it, you gotta go to school. Here are some ways to make the transition from summer to school a little easier. First-Day Mania There's no escaping the fact that the first day of school can be crazy. New kids wander around in circles. Lockers won't open. The school nurse needs your medical records. You forgot your gym shorts. Freshmen are running in all directions, looking for their homerooms. How can you combat first-day chaos? If you're headed to a new school, try to arrange a visit before classes begin. Explore any areas that are of particular interest, such as the gymnasium, library, or science labs. Some schools offer maps. Get one and give it a read before school starts — then keep it in your backpack until you're familiar with your new surroundings. Your first day is also the time to bring in school supplies and paperwork. It can help to pack your backpack the night before school starts so you're not scrambling around at the last minute looking

for what you need. In addition to packing basic supplies (such as notebooks, pens, pencils, and a calculator), hunt down any of the school forms that were mailed to your family over the summer: immunization (shot) records, permission slips, and class schedules. Did you try on eight different outfits before deciding what to wear? Lots of people check out who's wearing what on the first day of school. The key is to wear what makes you feel good, whether it's a brand-new outfit or a comfy old sweater. If you plan to wear a new pair of shoes, break them in a few days beforehand or your feet may scream for relief long before last period. Each school has a different opening-day drill. Some start with homeroom or an assembly, but others may jump right into the first-period class. You'll meet your new teachers, and they'll probably give you an overview of the course syllabus, class rules, what the semester will be like, what supplies you'll need, and expectations of your performance and behavior. Some teachers will jump right into their first lesson, while others may have noncoursework activities planned. It all depends on the class and teacher. Emotions Here's a simple equation: new place = new emotions. Lots of people feel anxious, scared, or excited about school. Although students who are coming back as seniors may be happy they're in their final year and can't wait to visit with friends, most freshmen or new kids are likely to be tense or worried.

Back to School cont. It's perfectly normal to feel nervous on the first day of school. Getting back to the school routine and adjusting to new workloads takes some getting used to after a long summer break. If you're having a mental meltdown, think back to some previous "first days." Everything probably settled down pretty quickly once you got into the routine. Meeting new people or getting reacquainted with classmates can feel overwhelming, especially if you're the shy or reserved type. Start small: If large groups make you nervous, try saying hello to one or two new people a day — the kid at the desk next to yours in homeroom is a good place to start. Or ask new people to sit with you in the cafeteria. If you still feel uncomfortable after a few days, talk to the school guidance counselor, a favorite teacher, or someone else you trust about how you're feeling and what you can do. But give yourself time — most problems adjusting to school are only temporary. Making Your Way Through the Lunchroom What's everyone's favorite period? Lunch, what else? But with foods like tacos, pizza, or cheeseburgers staring you in the face when you're at your most hungry, it can be hard to make healthy choices. Here are some tricks to choosing foods that will keep you focused and active throughout the day — as well as help you grow and develop throughout the school 28

Year: •Get a copy of the menu. If your cafeteria provides a weekly or monthly menu, check it out. Knowing what's on the menu puts you in control: You can pick and choose which days you want to buy lunch and when you want to bring your own. •Head for the salad bar. If your school offers a salad bar, take advantage. If you'd rather pack, consider adding carrot sticks, a piece of fresh fruit, or pretzels to your lunch bag. •Think energy. Some foods are better choices than others for maintaining energy during the day. Choose low-fat proteins, like chicken, beans, or low-fat yogurt and add lots of fruits and veggies to your meal. They'll provide the vitamins and minerals you need and the energy to get through the day. The same is true of drinks filled with caffeine or sugar. You don't have to cut these out entirely — just enjoy them in moderation. •Stop for a snack.
