FATHER'S DAY Shifting the Narrative: Changing the Portrayal of Black Fathers in Media
STAFF WRITER
The media has long played a significant role in shaping public perceptions and reinforcing stereotypes. One area where this is particularly evident is in the portrayal of black fathers. For far too long, black fathers have been misrepresented as absent, uninvolved, or disinterested in the lives of their children and families. However, it is essential to challenge these narratives and recognize the truth about black fatherhood

A study conducted by Color of Change and Family Story, analyzing hundreds of news stories and opinion pieces between 2015 and 2016, revealed a stark contrast in how black and white families are depicted in the media Black families were often portrayed as poor, dependent on welfare, and linked to criminality, while white families were depicted as socially stable
These representations perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to the negative perception of black fathers. The mischaracterization of black fathers as absentee is rooted in the flawed use of non-marital birthrates as a measure of parental involvement. This assumption wrongly implies that black fathers who are not married to the mothers of their children are not engaged parents However, research tells a different story

A 2013 report by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) found that black fathers were more likely than white fathers to engage in daily activities with their children, such as bathing, dressing, helping with homework, and attending activities Contrary to the media portrayal, black fathers demonstrate a high level of involvement and nurturing towards their children
It is crucial to challenge the prevailing narrative and celebrate the reality of black fatherhood. At Urban Trendsetters, we are committed to changing the way black fathers are portrayed in the media. We recognize the importance of showcasing positive examples of black fathers' love, care, and dedication to their children. To combat harmful stereotypes, we call for more black journalists in newsrooms to help set a better standard and provide accurate social and historical context By amplifying the voices of black experts and reaching out to them for insight, journalists can ensure accurate and nuanced reporting But the change doesn't stop there We invite everyone to join us in celebrating black dads Less than half of black fathers believe that mainstream media, social media, and popular culture accurately portray them. We must challenge this perception by actively sharing and promoting positive stories of black fatherhood. Let's use our social media platforms to #CelebrateBlackDads and share the true narrative of black fatherhood with the world. Black fathers are here, caring for their children every single day It's time to challenge the negative stereotypes and acknowledge their essential role in shaping the lives of their families Together, we can change the narrative and foster a more accurate and inclusive representation of black fatherhood in the media and beyond
