LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Live and Let Live By Dr. T

L

ive and let live is an expression or an idiom that promotes the idea of allowing others to live their lives as they see fit no matter how you may “feel” about it, or whether or not it challenges your own personal beliefs of what is right or wrong. Why is it so difficult to allow people to live their lives without imposing upon them belief systems, moral judgments, and ways of being that may be contrary to their own cultural, natural, spiritual, and/or normal ways of being? Wars have been fought over these very things. Peoples have been conquered: their lands, religion and cultural practices taken, denigrated, and all but destroyed in the name of promoting systems of belief and morality throughout history. Why? Why do we continue to push past the boundaries of decency and decorum, into the households and bedrooms of people who are just living their lives, in the name of democracy and freedom or Christian values and morality? Even when there are laws that have been challenged and still remain the law of the land, the choices people make within their legal rights to do so are called “illegal” “immoral” and “murderous” by those whose moral convictions do not agree with either the law of the land or those who practice their right to choose under the law.

In the most extreme cases, these crusaders for “You MUST do what I do & Believe as I Believe” have committed the despicable act of cold-blooded murder while in pursuit of moral justice. The killing of Dr. George Tiller on a Sunday morning while he attended his chosen place of worship is only one example. Dr. Tiller performed safe and legal abortions as only a small part of his medical practice, which was dedicated to providing excellent full-service health care for the women in Wichita, Kansas. Although many anti-abortion activists expressed remorse and sorrow at the murder of Dr. Tiller, many of them did not repudiate the man who killed him as a murderer with the same vehemence they screamed curses and foulness at the women who came to seek

help from Dr. Tiller and the services he provided. That, on its face, is absolutely hypocritical. No matter what you believe, we are a nation of laws and we have a system by which those laws are challenged or changed, which does not include murder, intimidation, public shaming or physical and emotional violence. And yet those who would call themselves “Soldiers of The Lord,” continue to push the boundaries of decency and decorum with their hateful rhetoric and all-consuming tactics of fear and intimidation. What about the LOVE of God?

There are those who live daily with the fear of being identified for who and what they are, because who they are may cause them to risk being fired from jobs, lose their houses, friends, family, and even their lives. These people are law abiding, tax paying, community building citizens who do not share equally in the freedoms we all take for granted as American citizens. The LGBT (Q) community lives with this inequity throughout the country in communities large and small, liberal and conservative. Because of personal belief systems and moral codes, both explicit and implicit, there are people who cannot fully live their lives as they want to live. While those who have the privileges of embracing life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness keep on fighting…to keep others from sharing what we take for granted?

Consumer Reporting Agencies Follow Your Moves By Jason Alderman

B

y now, you’ve probably heard about the Big Three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), which monitor your financial history and issue credit reports and credit scores to potential lenders. But did you know that there are dozens of other specialty consumer reporting agencies that track your history for activities that may not appear on your regular credit reports – things like bounced checks, late utility payments, insurance claims, and prescription orders? Most people never hear about these companies until they’re suddenly turned down for an apartment, checking account, insurance policy, or even a job or promotion. But you need to know that potential landlords, banks, insurance companies and employers are very likely ordering specialty reports to help them assess the risk of doing business with you.

That’s fine if you’ve got a squeaky-clean track record. But what if their files contain mistakes; or worse, what if someone has hijacked your identity and is poisoning your record with their own bad behavior? Fortunately, you do have recourse. Under federal law, you can request a copy of your report once a year from each agency, generally for free. You’re also entitled to a free copy whenever an “adverse action” is taken against you because of something in the report. (For example, if you’re turned down for a checking account.)

Unfortunately, there’s no central clearinghouse for these specialty agencies so you need to contact each individually. However, the Consumer continued on page 8

fter waiting and praying for 28 years, Sharon Fields’ dream is becoming a reality with the opening of Faith Sharon Home Adult Daycare in Ashland, Va. Open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the center plans to serve about 100 people who are disabled, mentally challenged, veterans, or senior citizens. The guests will be given two free meals a day; participate in inside and outside activities; and have access to game rooms, an arcade room, exercise room, prayer room, and bedrooms for naps. “This is a place where (people) can bring their loved ones and truly don’t have to worry because they know that they’re taken care of,” Sharon said.

Sharon, a licensed nurse for 40 years, moved to Virginia from New York in 1986 where she kept people in her home for 24 hour care. She said she has worked for nursing homes, hospitals, and private homes for most of her life. She desired to expand and start her own business where she could continue to serve others. “That’s what I do, I care for others,” she said. The motto she goes by and tells her staff is to “give lots of love. It’s all about love, care and safety.” Sharon said opening the adult daycare was one of many achieved heart’s desires. Another achievement was receiving her GED six year ago. In the future, Sharon intends to pursue many other ventures including publishing her autobiography to inspire single mothers; opening a barbershop; and beginning a special ministry for both people who are behind on child support and need assistance finding jobs and staying out of jail. She said when God blesses her she wants to be a blessing to someone else. “Everything that I’m doing, everything that God is doing for me, and going to continue to do is not about the money because I never really had money-being married, divorced twice, and raising (my kids) by myself. Everything is truly coming from my heart,” she said.

Sharon said if it was not for her colleague Kelva Edmunds- Waller, she would not have been able to do everything. Kelva, the director of the facility, has been a registered nurse for 31 years and heard of Sharon’s efforts from her sister who attends the same church as Sharon. “Once I met Sharon and I saw where my strengths were in the administrative parts, which she really needed to have in order to get her approval from the department of social services, I really couldn’t say no,” Kelva said. “She’s really a delightful person, very energetic, and she believes in me too.” Kelva assisted with ensuring the center met regulations put forth by the Department of Social Services and helped write many policies. Kelva said she had not heard of centers similar to Faith Sharon Home and hopes individuals from Richmond and Henrico County will use the center for their loved ones. “It will be a fun, safe and high quality adult Daycare center,” Kelva said. “When they drop them off, they’ll know that they’re getting the best care.”

Faith Sharon Home Adult Daycare is located at 325 S Hill Carter Parkway in Ashland, Virginia. For more information go to the organization’s Facebook page, email Sharon at faithsharonhome@gmail.com , or call her on her business number at (804)496-6966. -----------------------------------------Promotional Feature-----------------------------------------www.UrbanViewsWeekly.com August 6, 2014 Urban Views Weekly

Ask the Candidates Jack Gravely, of The Jack Gravely Show on WLEE 990 AM, partnered with Urban Views Weekly to educate and inform our community of the positions of candidates in the 16th District Democratic primary. We posed the same five questions to each candidate. Rudolph C. “Rudy” McCollum Jr. and Gerry Jeffries Rawlinson replied and answered the questions. Their unedited words are printed on these pages. Rosalyn R. Dance and Delores L. McQuinn did not respond to questions, emails, or to telephone messages left on their voice mail. We thank Rudy McCollum and Gerry Rawlinson for being accessible.

Rudolph C. “Rudy” McCollum Jr. 1. Other than honesty and integrity, what personal trait(s) will you exhibit that will make residents of the 16th District proud that you are their Senator?

Partnership with the private sector and the enhancement of local public and private technical schools to provide greater options for the development of the trades are needed in order to provide viable options for those young adults who choose not to attend four-year colleges or universities.

Articulation, concern, courage, commitment, confidence, determination, diligence, leadership, intelligence, professionalism, and tenacity. These traits are critical for success in the state senate and my success is what will make the residents of the 16th district proud that I am their senator. In addition to those traits, I think the skills required, that are important are the ability to work well with my colleagues and also, to challenge them. And also, to provide the ability to interpret the legalities of the General Assembly and I believe that my legal skills, 24 years of which, are of great benefit.

4. Some individuals in communities within the 16th District feel that there is a pipeline running from their neighborhoods to prison. What will you do to help break the prison pipeline?

Focus on Pre – K education enhancement and focus on skill development during K – 12, as well as creating employment opportunities by bringing more business groups into the area through tax incentives and other measures, will provide the needs to avoid our young people breaking into the prison pipeline.

2. Under what circumstances, would you support the Commonwealth of Virginia to borrow from, suspend, or cut funding to the Virginia Retirement System?

Only under the most extreme and dire financial conditions, should the funds in the VRS be used for any purpose other than for the use of paying the retirement benefits. In other words, the fiscal state of our economy should be near devastation before we, in any way, affect those funds which are specifically set aside for the benefit of those retirees. 3. What type of training programs would you recommend that would improve employment opportunities and advancement of young adults who choose not to attend four-year colleges or universities?

5. What would you do to help increase the amount of contract dollars awarded by the Commonwealth of Virginia to Black-owned companies?

Creating more opportunities for Black-owned companies by having the opportunities to sit down with me and with the Secretary of Commerce, Morris Jones, to determine what is lacking in our current system that is preventing Black businesses from achieving greater participation and setting in motion the action required, be it legislative, or administrative, to obtain a much greater share of state government contracts, is what I see as a starting point for being able to improve the amount of contract dollars awarded by the Commonwealth of Virginia to Black- owned companies.

Ask the Candidates

Gerry Jeffries Rawlinson 1. Other than honesty and integrity, what personal trait(s) will you exhibit that will make residents of the 16th District proud that you are their Senator? I, Gerry Rawlinson, am knowledgeable, loyal, faithful, and committed to the People of the 16th District and to the Democratic Party. I am a logical and steadfast person. When facing hurdles, I do not take no for an answer. However, I do possess the critical thinking skills needed to be able to analyze situations and to proceed to accomplish the desired goals. 2. Under what circumstances, would you support the Commonwealth of Virginia to borrow from, suspend, or cut funding to the Virginia Retirement System?

I would support the Commonwealth of Virginia to borrow from, suspend, or cut funding to the Virginia Retirement System, only for the benefit of education. 3. What type of training programs would you recommend that would improve employment opportunities and advancement of young adults who choose not to attend four-year colleges or universities? I would support training and programs for:

-- specific skills and trades needed for local and statewide industries; -- starting small businesses; and

-- assisting individuals to improve their reading, computers, public speaking, time management, self-discipline, problem solving, and management of money skills.

4. Some individuals in communities within the 16th District feel that there is a pipeline running from their neighborhoods to prison. What will you do to help break the prison pipeline? I will support legislation to improve education, community unity, and fairness in the justice system. I will support legislation that works to accredit the student and not the school. I believe that there needs to be an overhaul in the schools’ methodology in educating children who are at high risk for the “pipeline running from neighborhoods to prison”. I would support legislation addressing teen pregnancies, and adverse factors impeding economic growth in low income neighborhoods. 5. What would you do to help increase the amount of contract dollars awarded by the Commonwealth of Virginia to Black-owned companies?

I will support legislation which would require that a percentage of contracts and a specific dollar amount be awarded to qualified Commonwealth of Virginia Black-owned businesses. I would require that an oversight committee be appointed to ensure that the state and other parties are in compliance with the requirements. The oversight committee shall have expertise related to the industry. I believe in free commerce but not to the extent that qualified members of the Commonwealth of Virginia are eliminated from the opportunity to generate wealth for their families. Virginians cannot allow or accept the “trickle down” concept or continue to permit large corporations or special interest groups to control who is able to sit at the table of opportunity.

Life is like a boxing match. Defeat is declared not when you fall, but when you refuse to stand again. ~ Unknown

O

ne of the world’s oldest, and most celebrated sports, boxing, has proven to be popular among many people, for a variety of reasons. From its emergence in ancient Greece, through early 18-century England where it was considered the “gentle” art of self-defense, boxing has continually been refined and perfected. Amateur boxing is also growing exponentially. Whether doing it professionally, for fun or for fitness, boxing is becoming very popular.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that doctors “vigorously oppose” youth boxing because of the risk of head injuries like concussions. But trainers and boxing supporters say it teaches young people discipline and work ethic better than any other sport. Many kids in urban areas join boxing gyms to learn how to defend themselves, and end up getting in fewer fights in school and on the street, they say. Stress relief. Humility. Self-assurance. Improved self-image. Mental fortitude. And, becoming a better person and athlete. This and more are all the benefits of boxing, and Ninth Dimension Sports Circle supports every aspect of boxing and is teaching children and adults of all ages the benefits of the sport. Richmond Gym Uses Boxing as Teaching Tool for Teens

Ninth Dimension Sports Circle is a boxing organization specializing in the fundamental and amateur Olympic-style boxing. The non-profit, homegrown in Richmond, Virginia, Ninth Dimension prepares youth and adult athletes to follow their dream of representing Team USA. Ninth Dimension allows boxers to compete in state, regional and national tournaments, and they are trained to become amateur boxing champions. Ninth Dimension Sports Circle has hosted seven state tournaments and boxing shows, really putting Richmond on the map for being known for elite boxing athletes. Coach Omar Aleem founded the non-profit in 2007 to help the community and to make a difference.

Their mission is to enable local metro Richmond athletes and coaches to achieve sustained competitive excellence, develop character, support the sport of boxing, and promote and grow Olympic style boxing in the state of Virginia and nationally. They strive to encourage, teach motivation, guidance and inspiration to build character and strength. In addition, their members will learn discipline and respect where they can utilize these skills in the community, home, work, and school. The responsibility of Ninth Dimension Sports Circle is not only to produce accomplished boxers, but also to develop young men and women to be productive adults in their communities. Ninth Dimension sports is certified with the National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee for the United States. In addition, the gym is sanctioned with the USA Boxing Association.

“Nine is the highest single-digit number in the decimal system.” comments Aleem. “Which is why we titled it Ninth Dimension, because we believe we provide the highest level of talent and training in our area.”

Coach Omar Aleem is a certified and licensed coach through the United States Olympic Committee. He has eight years of Level 2 coaching certification. In addition, Coach Omar is a Level 1 official. Coach Omar has experience in the field of martial arts and self-defense. Under Coach Omar Aleem’s guidance and training, two boxers have moved forward to the pro ranks of boxing, and two boxers have made it to the Olympic trials. Recently, there were several boxers who participated in a “Belt Blast” boxing tournament in Algiers, North Carolina that won their divisions among 100 participating boxers. Promo Video for Ninth Dimension Sports Circle

At Ninth Dimension Sports Circle, everyone is welcomed regardless of his or her financial status. “We are thankful that we are able to offer athletes the opportunity to develop their skills in a positive environment,” says Coach Aleem. “This is due to the help we receive from individuals and businesses within our community.” He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life. ~ Muhammad Ali

The boxing family serves youth and adults in the city of Richmond and surrounding counties. The organization currently works with 127 young men and women. Coach Omar’s sons, Immanuel Aleem and Moshea Aleem, are pro boxers and have fought on ESPN2 and Showtime. Immanuel Aleem recently had a boxing match against Michael Noriega during their ESPN Boxing bout in Rancho Mirage, CA, and Moshea Aleem and Edward Cordova during their ESPN Boxing in Rancho Mirage, CA at Agua Caliente Casino Resort & Spa on April 24, 2014. The youth involved with Ninth Dimension travel all over the USA for tournaments and matches. Their past travels have taken them to Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.

To continue building the Ninth Dimension legacy and improving their impact in the community, the organization needs the community’s support and assistance. They are in need of an event building for training and hosting boxing shows for the youth and adults. They are also in need of donations for new safety equipment, shoes, uniforms, boxing gear, USA member’s passbooks, and assistance with traveling expenses. Finally, the gym is in need of a passenger van or bus to use for traveling to out-of-town events, and many parents are unable to afford the expense of driving to and from the events. They would like help to provide many inner city low to moderate- income youth an opportunity to participate in the program who cannot afford to pay USA fee, club dues, or purchase equipment to give them the same opportunities that are provided to the upper class communities.

They would like the support of the public with donations of any type. Also, they hold tent sales outside of the gym to sell merchandise to gain profit for the gym. continued on page 10

We were talking with Davis to learn how this column, FUNdraising Good Times, influenced her work in raising $45,000 for The 10th Anniversary Gates Campaign. This was a campaign to restore the beloved metal gates at the museum and the 331 rosettes that adorn them.

Financial Protection Bureau has taken some of the legwork out by compiling a list of the most commonly used agencies, along with instructions and contact information for ordering your reports. (Search “Specialty Consumer Agencies” at www.cfpb.gov.) Another great resource is the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse’s fact sheet on specialty reports at www.privacyrights.org. Specialty consumer reporting agencies collect information about you from various sources and share it with creditors and other businesses, including: • Public records of criminal and civil cases • Credit history • Bankruptcy filings • Companies with which you have an existing or prior relationship • Medical information • Driving records Typical inquiries might include:

• Check-writing history – for banks, credit unions and businesses that accept payments by check. They’ll look for things like bounced or returned checks and fraud.

• Medical conditions and prescription drug history – if you’re applying for an individual life, long-term care, or disability insurance policy. (Note: Health insurers can’t deny coverage or charge higher premiums because of preexisting conditions.) • Residential – landlords checking your tenant history, credit, criminal background, etc.

• Auto or homeowner/renter’s insurance – insurers will screen your records for things like traffic violations, claims, and property losses.

• Payday lending – creditors investigating people who don’t use traditional financial services (banking, credit cards, etc.) might evaluate payday loans, checkcashing services, prepaid cards, etc. • Utilities – If you’re trying to open a new utility, phone, cable, or Internet account.

• Employment background – By law, employers must obtain your permission to run a background check. Unfortunately, they’re generally not required to identify which company they’re using unless they decide not to hire you – it doesn’t hurt to ask ahead of time, though.

Note that when you dispute information in your reports, agencies are legally obligated to investigate and correct any inaccurate or outdated information. Also, they must give you an update on the status of your request to view your report. However, there is no time limit on when your request must be processed. Bottom line: You might not realize there’s false or potentially damaging information being reported about you, so get in the habit of ordering specialty consumer reports along with your credit reports.
