Do You Need ID Theft Insurance or Credit Monitoring? By Jason Alderman

ou’d have to be living under a rock not to be concerned about identity theft. It seems like every other month there’s a new report about another massive data breach somewhere in the world.

Not surprisingly, a thriving industry has sprung up around helping to protect consumers from identity theft. Most of these services are pretty expensive and many consumer organizations argue that they merely take actions you could easily carry out yourself for free. But if you don’t have the time or wherewithal, you may want to enlist a professional to help unravel the mess.
•
Keep in mind when considering whether to buy credit monitoring: • Many creditors report information to all three credit bureaus, but some only report to one, so your three credit reports may contain different information. • Because many lenders only report activity to credit bureaus monthly, it could take weeks before your monitoring service spots fraudulent behavior. • Ask how you’ll be notified of flagged changes (email, text and/or mail) and how frequently (daily, weekly, monthly). • You can order one free copy of each credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com per year, so by staggering them, you could get a different report every four months.
Following are some of the identity theft prevention services being marketed, as well as questions to ask when considering them:
ID theft insurance is commonly offered as a rider to homeowners or renters insurance and typically costs $25 and $60 a year. Note: it doesn’t protect you from being victimized in the first place nor does it cover direct monetary losses resulting from identity theft. Rather, it reimburses costs associated with reclaiming your financial identity (e.g., phone calls, making copies, mailing documents, wages lost when pursuing resolution, and hiring an attorney).
If you know – or fear – that an account has been compromised but don’t want to fully block access to your credit reports through a credit freeze, you can place a free, 90-day initial fraud alert with the three credit bureaus. This means businesses must verify your identity with you before opening new accounts.
Questions you should ask: • What are the policy’s limits? • Is there a deductible? • If lost wages are covered, what limits apply and what triggers this coverage? • If legal fees are covered, what limits apply and must the insurer preapprove the work? • How much personalized assistance will you get – will they assign a case manager to execute on your behalf or merely give you a checklist to follow?
Credit monitoring services track your credit reports and contact you whenever key changes occur – things like new accounts opened in your name, address changes, credit inquiries and increased credit limits. They usually cost from $10 to $30 a month and services provided are all over the map. For example:

Some monitor and provide credit reports from all three major credit bureaus; but some only track one. More expensive plans provide additional services including monitoring public records, black market website surveillance, and computer protection programs like antivirus and keystroke encryption software. Some provide one or more free (or low-cost) credit scores.

his week we heard two expressions we are compelled to share with you, our readers. They are “The Fooling Yourself Theory� and “Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness.� Both can be applied to fundraising throughout the year, and especially in the last quarter. They were shared by women from different parts of the country both of whom are very experienced with fundraising, board service, and nonprofit management. One is a nonprofit executive: the other heads a private business.
The Fooling Yourself Theory. When we heard this phrase we had to stop and write it down right away. Here’s what it means. You are an executive (or board member) and you observe that certain structures, systems or people do not support the organization and its goals. You make the observation and then you ignore your observation. Or you hope you’re wrong. Or you hope it will resolve itself on its own. We have seen this in play so many times. People in leadership know what is wrong, see it clear as day, and yet take no action. Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness. This error can be made by young and old alike. The young may confuse kindness with weakness because they don’t have a history of working within healthy organizations. They may assume that creating a climate of trust and letting people be responsible for outcomes is a sign of weakness. That the executive or board chair won’t notice if work isn’t produced. Older people may have been trained to respond to constant follow up, criticism, and externally imposed deadlines. They may mistake a leader’s delegation of responsibility and respect for others’ expertise and autonomy as weakness. The fourth quarter is a time many nonprofits focus on revenue, and “The Fooling Yourself Theory� can get in the way of successful fundraising. If last year’s fundraising strategy did not yield the required results, thinking it will work this year may be an example of the “theory� in action. If board members did not solicit those they agreed to solicit last year, you may want a different strategy – or different volunteers – this year.
Employees and board members who show up in body but not in mind and spirit, and those who quietly or boldly don’t fulfill their responsibilities may be surprised when they are asked to resign. It shouldn’t be a surprise: kindness is not weakness. Kind leaders work with their employees and board members and understand the ups and downs of life and the many commitments we all must fulfill. But leaders – mean and kind – know that responsibilities need to be fulfilled. Those who don’t practice the “theory� take action: they are not weak, they are kind and decisive. Redeem the TIME….’cuz you never know By Dr. T
T
ime is something there never seems to be enough of… at least for some things. It passes so quickly in certain circumstances and drags endlessly on in others but whatever your perception of it, TIME is something that is beyond our control. It moves at its own pace, and we are helpless to change it one way or the other. In life and death, it is a constant companion tapping us on the shoulder and reminding us that we had better pay attention.
When we do not value time, we tend to waste a lot of it. There is nothing wrong with a measured amount of frivolity on occasion. Certainly, we all deserve to take a break from our labor and the cares of the day, week, or month and just do nothing, mindlessly wasting time, if that is what is needed. The cautionary admonishment here is that whatever time you waste, you cannot ever retrieve again from the waste can or trash bin; it is gone forever and deleted for all of eternity. So consider carefully if you really want to waste that time that you think you have because you never know when TIME, itself, will just simply run out. And once your Time runs out, you cannot replenish your supply because we are all allotted a certain amount of it and when it is gone, it is gone. Like a basketball game where the final shot for the win is taken at the buzzer, it matters if the clock shows a zero before the shot is taken. It is inconsequential whether the shot is made or bounces off the rim because TIME has run out and the shot doesn’t count either way. That coach, player, and team wishes with all their hearts that they had just a little more time and the end result would have been different for sure. To how many broken relationships, family situations, or dreams and aspirations deferred can we apply that analogy? We always think we have time to do this or to do that next week, next year, or the next time we see the person to whom we need to speak a word of encouragement, love, or even apology. You have the dream of starting your
own business or moving to a new place, traveling or finally finishing your education, but you always put it off or make excuses for not doing it now because, it can wait. Time is passing, my friends, whether you are aware or not and it cannot be determined how much you have remaining in the container

You never know when time will run out, if not for you then perhaps for someone that is close to you: someone with whom you never took the time to make amends, say, “I love you”, tell him or her that one last thing, or appreciate him or her for how they impacted your life. Do not delay until tomorrow what you can do today, because you never know when TIME will run out. The game clock is ticking and you need to get off the bench and get into the game. Redeem the time that you have been given and do not continue to waste it or procrastinate it away, because TIME is moving forward and the game clock is ticking for us ALL.

hen she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer about 20 years ago at the age of 45, Vernal Branch’s husband told her he wanted her to be there to watch their grandchildren with him one day. Today, she is a breast cancer survivor, advocate and the grandmother of six grandchildren. “I’ve reached a milestone in my life and I am just blessed, very very blessed.” Now she serves as the Public Policy manager of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, a position she has held for five years. Originally from Winston Salem, N.C., Branch has lived in Richmond for 13 years. She previously lived in California where she was diagnosed. When diagnosed, she had recently moved from Texas and had a lot of family support in California but not as many friends in the new state. She said she did have the support of her husband and sons. “I think their strength in taking care of me and as my caregivers was what really helped me to survive and to get better and just lots of phone calls,” Branch said. Later, she also received support from people from one of her son’s high schools, as they started to rally around her.

When asked what advice she would offer to women, and possibly men, who currently suffer with the disease, she recommended for them to make sure they get all of their facts first; to not rush into any decisions; and get a second opinion, if needed. Branch said it is important to have someone available to go through the whole process. “Sometimes you need someone with you to travel that journey with you and to help you with some of the decisions that you’re going to make,” Branch said. “I think a really good support system is important for a woman or anyone who is going through cancer.”

Five years after her diagnosis, Branch was denied health insurance because of her pre-existing condition. “I was asked by the White House and the Obamas to come and tell my story, because they were trying to pass the Affordable Care Act,” Branch said. She also appeared in congressional hearings for the same thing. Branch also works with “Every Woman’s Life,” a program through the Virginia Department of Health which offers free breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings for women and even help with treatment. She mentioned how one national law, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000, does something similar.

Eight weeks after her mastectomy, Branch became involved with breast cancer advocacy. She said she realized she needed to take the focus off of her and focus on the big picture. “There were a lot of women who were not surviving, and why were they not surviving?” Branch said. “I realized I had to learn more about this disease, and so that’s what kind of drove me to that activism and learning more about the disease and how it can affect our lives, affect our families.”

What Are the Symptoms? Different people have different warning signs for breast cancer. Some people do not have any signs or symptoms at all. A person may find out they have breast cancer after a routine mammogram. Some warning signs of breast cancer are— • New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. • Irritation or dimpling of breast skin. • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast. • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area. • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood. • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast. • Pain in any area of the breast. How to Help a Loved One Get through a Tough Time StatePoint

hether self-induced or unavoidable, there are a host of pitfalls that life can throw one’s way, and everyone faces a crisis at some point in his or her life. When it happens to a friend or family member, knowing how to be supportive can be difficult.
“One of the grandest gifts we can extend to friends and family who are in trouble is the gift of our time,� says Beth Wiseman, author of the new novel “The Promise,� based on a friend’s experience being held captive in Pakistan.
Wiseman, who worked with government agencies to help extract her friend from a dangerous situation and then supported her upon her return to the States, is offering tips to anyone looking for ways of being helpful to someone going through a tough time.
• Be present: When one is at the center of a crisis, it’s often hard to see the light for all of the darkness. Friends and family can help that person see past the “nowâ€? of a situation toward what the future can bring. You can be a source of positive encouragement and a reminder that things won’t always be this way. Your troubled friend may simply need a sounding board. Identify in what capacity you can be helpful and then fulfill that role.
• Give your time: So often, our time is limited and precious, which makes it worth more than monetary offerings. Perhaps that is cooking a meal, running errands on his or her behalf, or

• Don’t say “I told you so:â€? No one needs to hear advice on how he could have avoided a bad situation after the fact, particularly when he is suffering. You don’t need to agree with someone’s decisions or actions to find ways of being supportive. So skip the “I told you so.â€? • Be patient: Oftentimes, when people are going through a rough patch, they may need space more than help. Approach the situation delicately and thoughtfully so you are not adding to his or her stress. • Have perspective: In the thick of it, don’t forget that trauma can be life changing and often has a silver lining. We are stronger than we think.

The 78 points are the most points scored by a VUU football team since Virginia Union defeated Morgan State University 85-0 in 1921. VUU set a school record with 697 offensive yards, breaking the school record of 623 yards set against Norfolk State University in 1992.

The VUU Panthers scored 11 touchdowns, breaking the single-game school record of 10 against Lincoln in 1960. VUU kicker Troy Krepich set a school record with 10 extra points, breaking the previous record of 9 scored against Lincoln in 2008. Krepich also set a record by attempting 11 extra points, breaking the school record of 10 against Livingstone in 1980. VUU’s Cassious McDowell rushed for 174 yards on nine carries, including four touchdowns. McDowell’s average of 19.5 yards per carry was the second-highest single-game total in VUU history set against Saint Paul’s College in 1976.
