Alums recall fun they had on class trips
O
ne of the perks of becoming a senior at Mount Saint Joseph Academy for many students was the chance to take a class trip. Some of the alums share their memories here of what it was like to be away from Maple Mount. Anna Mattingly, A66, thinks her class was the first to be able to spend the night away from the Academy for a senior trip. “We went to the Shrine of Our Lady of Snows in Belleville, Ill., spent the night there, and then went to St. Louis,” she said. “We saw the Arch of St. Louis and went to the St. Louis Zoo and returned to the Mount the same day. The Arch was quite impressive as was the fact we went over the Mississippi River. Even though we were used to the Ohio River, I had never crossed (the Mississippi) and was quite impressed with the bridge we crossed over and seeing the Arch, which was still under construction (it was completed in October 1965.) “My family and I were not travelers, and at the time I had not been out of Kentucky,” Mattingly said. “I remember Our Lady of Snows as being a very peaceful place, a certain reverence about it. One of the things that I really liked was the fact we were able to spend a night on our trip away from the Mount. After all, we were the first to do this and it was just exciting.” New Orleans was the
destination for both the class of 1971 and 1974. “I remember the French Quarter, eating at the Cafe Du Monde, the small shops (I still have a little candle I bought) and the cemetery (all the graves are above ground),” said WaNell Stallings Lanham, A71 . “We saw some floats from Mardi Gras. I did have a few pictures, I wish I could put my hands on them, but that’s probably not possible any time soon.” Becky Collins Morris, A71, was also on that trip, which included Sister Charles Mary (Lindauer). “I most remember our walk down Bourbon Street. The nuns did not wear the head pieces,” Morris said. “One particular bar/saloon had a lady swinging in/out a window. Passers-by commented we must be a class from a ‘girls school’ – they spotted the nuns.” Tina Weber Smith, A74, went to New Orleans with Sister Helen Marie Pfohl and perhaps former Sister Laura Abell. “17 girls and two nuns!” she said. “Soon after we arrived, we found a restaurant for breakfast. We were all wearing our Mount Saint Joseph T-shirts. One of the waiters yelled, ‘Here come the Josephs!’ It was a ‘far

out there’ place for this country girl. By the end of the week, I decided I liked it. “Drinking at 18 was legal in Louisiana, so we did our fair share,” Smith said. “We all survived, including the nuns. I’ll never forget that trip and the fun we had. I still have souvenirs from New Orleans.” The details of several trips are a bit fuzzy for some alums, but for Rosa Palazzo Schmidt, A51, the confusion was included in her first class trip as a junior. “Mammoth Cave was our destination, a great place to visit if one has not been there,” she said. “On our return trip to the Mount, we stopped in Bowling Green, Ky., for dinner on our own and visiting around town. “The preceding summer, my mother and I had been to Shelby Park in Louisville, where I lived at the time, and met some nice people there as we were watching the swimmers. One was a young man who was a junior in college at Western Kentucky (which is in Bowling Green.) My good friend Continued on page 5

The NEW Mount
-By Sarah Patterson, Director of Archives Archives news for Alumnae Weekend
Be sure to stop by the Memory Room at this year’s Alumnae Weekend. We will have displayed photographs, yearbooks, copies of The Mount and other assorted goods to take you down “memory lane!” The Museum will be open for visitors, but please be aware that we are in the initial stages of renovating and re-visioning the presentation of our history in the Museum. Proceed with caution as you walk through. In the Memory Room will be a Book Sale of books used in the Academy library and classrooms. The Museum does not need them all and we will be happy for them to find a loving home where they will be read and treasured! In this last year the Archives has debuted online
the Oral History Project. Started in the winter of 2013, the Archives and Communications offices have been interviewing sisters and recording their life story. We would like to add alumnae to this collection of histories. If you are interested in sharing your story of attending the Academy and/or Junior College, please contact Sarah Patterson to schedule an appointment during the Alumnae Weekend. If you live close to the area and would like to schedule an interview at a different time, that can be arranged. Sarah can be reached at sarah.patterson@maplemount.org or 270-229-0605. You can listen to selected oral histories online at http:// ursulinesmsj.org/about-us/archives/oral-history-project.

together at Rich’s and my home in Sarasota, Fla., every January and March for the past 22 years! When I learned that Kathy (Welz) McNeary and her husband Tim also live in Sarasota (year-round!), the four of us couples have had great times together every year in Sarasota. So the Mount HAS HAD a very positive impact on us in many wonderful ways! Mary Danhauer A71 (right) was named a 2013 Brescia University Distinguished Alumni in October 2013. The award honors graduates who have distinguished themselves on the regional, national and often international scene. A 1976 Brescia graduate, and former member of the Mount Saint Joseph Ursuline community, Mary has been a teacher, EMT and nurse practitioner and is now director of the McAuley Clinic, where patients without medical cards or insurance are served. She is involved in social justice and is committed to the needs of the poor. Margarita Lopez-Guerra de Cardenal (left): My name is Margarita Lopez, I’m from Nicaragua, Central America. I studied in Mount Saint Joseph Academy for almost two years (January 1979 until May 1980). I graduated as a junior; that’s why I’m not in the 1980s class graduation. I learned English at Mount Saint Joseph and enrolled in the University of Louisiana. I’m so glad I found the Mount Saint Joseph website! NOTE: Alumnae Adventures is YOUR corner. Share your news; fill us in on your life after the Mount! alumnae.msj@maplemount.org • MSJ Alumnae Office, 8001 Cummings Rd, Maple Mount KY 42356 • 270-229-2006 The 1966 senior class trip to see the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill., (the Main Shrine is pictured at left) may have been the first overnight trip for Academy students. Liz Ruckriegel Berger was a member of the group who went to Mammoth Cave in May 1955. She said, “We climbed a lot of stairs and got wet because it was so damp. We saw stalagmites and stalactites, and lizards crawling on the wall. But we didn’t see any bats, though many of the girls talked about it.” The lanterns in the picture were used to light their path for part of the way.
Class Trips

Joan Sherron (Hofman) and I decided to go up to the college to say hi to my newly acquainted friend. “We met all these nice young men who were eager to help us find our friend.” Schmidt said. “The only trouble, none of them knew him by name. They called in other classmates. Still no one knew him. Finally, they brought in the yearbook. Still no Bill. As we were leaving, one of them said, “I betcha (there is no Bill.)” Reflecting, I thought, ‘They think we made that up just to come up here and get a boyfriend!’ “Back at the Mount, I wrote my mother, who told me Bill was in college at Eastern Kentucky. I felt very silly after that, but at least I did not have to face those young men again!” The class of 1972 went to Atlanta, a trip memorable because their bus had a flat tire. “Nothing like a bus full of Mount girls yelling at all the truckers,” said Mary Ann Shewmaker Payne, A72. “A bus loaded with girls would get the attention of anyone, although the attention might tone down a bit when our chaperones were spotted.” Dorothy Ford Riggs, A72, said it wasn’t just the girls waving at the truckers that she remembers. “We got lots of responses from them, too.” “We did have a wonderful time,” Payne said. “I can remember being told that if we went out at night, not to walk alone. The city of Atlanta was huge to a small town girl, and no, you would not want to walk alone even in the daytime. I can remember us going to Underground Atlanta which I really enjoyed. Then at night, we filled the hotel with lots of party fun and laughter. “The last day we were there we went to Six Flags
over Georgia. All the memories of a great class and wonderful teachers will never be forgotten. It would be great if some day in time, we could all take another trip together, I know we would enjoy it now as much as we did back then.” To some, the most memorable trip was no trip at all. Mary Costello, A65, recalls that her senior class was the Mount’s largest. “The dilemma was where to take 44 teenage girls,” she said. “Well ... time quickly passed and there were no weekends that could be used for a field trip due to the end of the year crunch. The music voice students could not chance jeopardizing their recital. What to do? Those girls really wanted to go on a trip! “The answer was right in front of the principal, Sister Miriam Medley,” Costello said. “Those seniors could have a giant sleepover in the MSJ gym. All boarders and day students were invited to spend one night together in the gym. We had a ball. We roller skated and then played ‘our’ music and danced the night away. There was not much sleeping going on in that place! The sleepy seniors wanted to skip dinner the next day, but were told ‘no dice.’ Some did manage to sleep through the supper bell though.” With 2015 serving as the 50th anniversary year for the class of 1965, Costello said her classmates are in the planning stages of finally having their field trip. “We are planning to be at the Mount for Alumnae Sunday, May 17, 2015 and to have our field trip that weekend (even though it will not be an overnighter),” she said. “Join us for Alumnae Weekend 2015 and see how we fare.” That may be giving an idea to the class of 1973. Carolyn Sue Cecil, A73, said her class had no big trip, instead doing small activities in the area – a bowling trip into Owensboro, a gathering at Mrs. Omoto’s, an overnight trip to Louisville. “One time, instead of dumping the money we made at a car wash in the ‘senior trip’ fund, we gave it to the Drurys because their house burned down,” Cecil said. “Maybe one of these days, the class of 1973 should take a ‘class trip’ as adults!” n

We welcome you to the Mount Dear Alumnae, Within a few months we will be coming together for our annual reunion. We do hope that you will take this opportunity to come to the Mount to visit, renew friendships and have a good time. It is so important for us to stay in touch. By the time you get here, the Mount will be in full bloom. The winter has been pretty incredible with ice, snow, sleet and everything in between. It is going to be nice to have the trees greening up and the fields being planted. Spring is a wonderful time of the year. It reminds us of renewal, new life and the abundance of the land. Our farm is so beautiful and so bountiful. It sustains us and gives us the opportunity to help feed others with its produce. As alumnae of Mount Saint Joseph, we have all been touched by this land and have walked its fields and pastures. Let us use the land as an example of giving of self and sharing our abundance. We welcome you to the Mount in May. If you haven’t been here for a while, please give yourself the gift of a weekend away with friends. May your lives be filled with many blessings.
