ALUMNAE ADVENTURES Sister Rose Henry (Henrietta) Higdon, SL, A’35 Dear Classmates of 1935, It would be great to see you again and learn what each of you has done during the last 70 years. As you know, I became a Sister of Loretto. When I went to the priest for advice he told me to go to Loretto. I had never even heard of the Sisters of Loretto, but since I asked him to help me, I thought that I had better do what he told me to do. I later learned that he had three blood sisters who were sisters of Loretto, so that is how I got to Loretto. After I got over my homesickness I was all right. For many years the Ursulines have been very good to me when they were teaching in Lebanon. They would always let me know when they were going in that direction, and take me down. I am doing quite well at the age of 88 ½. Have a nice celebration, With love and prayers, Sister Rose Henry Higdon Frances “Sis” Hamilton Steltenpohl A’42 She is 80 years old and “not in good health.” She wrote, “Hope the 100th celebration (of the MSJ Alumnae Association) will be lots of fun and ‘no rain.’” Patricia J. Livers C’46 I regret that time and tide have curtailed my travel abilities. That circumstance in no way dims my support and appreciation of the Mount. May the Association continue for another 100 years with enthusiastic leadership. Sister M. Brenda (Rita) Willett A’51 I really regret that I am not able to attend this year. I spent a few days in the hospital in March and I am still trying to get caught up. The end of the school year is right on us and there is so much to be finished. Shirley Steerstedter Raymond A’65 We are looking forward to the Reunion so very much…Pam (Steerstedter Nolot A’62), who is my older sister, is desperately searching through boxes looking for her beanie…and other accoutrements of Mount living. (This says something about how much time she has on her hands now that her eleven children are mostly grown with families of their own!!!) I am humming the song about the buns at Mount Saint Joseph they say are mighty fine… but one rolled off the table and killed a pal of mine…and the famous verse added by the class of 1965: “The boys at Mount Saint Joseph, they say are mighty fine… We asked for Elvis Presley…they gave us Eddie Riney…!!!” Enough of that…Pam and I are gathering our dusters, saddle oxfords and train cases (with tins to keep our food in our lockers) of course…and will see you soon. I may even try to find my book, The Graduate…that was confiscated early in my senior year and returned at the end of the year…dog eared and well read by several good sisters…I am sure!!! Sister Cheryl Clemons A’69 After receiving Ph.D. in historical theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1995, I taught theology, scripture and women’s studies courses at Brescia University for ten years before becoming part of the Leadership Team for the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph last year. After several years away from playing organ or piano, I’ve begun organ lessons again as I can squeeze them in. I also continue to read mystery novels, and I’ve been a devoted Star Trek fan through all its various incarnations. My parents are still alive; mom beat cancer several years ago, but my dad, after several small strokes and other ailments, is getting more and more feeble. But it’s great to still have them around. My seven siblings are all doing as well as one could expect and better! I have 3 nieces and 3 nephews. Winifred “Winnie” Riney Cohron A’69 I’m still working—assistant principal at Drakes Creek Middle School (in Bowling Green). Love my job, but more importantly, our first grandchild was born last summer, and everything else pales in comparison to that! Paula Mattingly Crabtree A’69 Phill and I have been married 35 years and are the proud pappy and nana to six adorable grandbabies (ages 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 9); two boys and four girls — all living in Daviess County. Lisa (our oldest) and her husband Robert live in Whitesville; Lisa is a teacher — now stay-at-home mom with three children. Jenni and husband Steve live in Owensboro with their two “miracle” babies and she works in county government. Our son Phillip and his wife Laci have a 1-year-old daughter. He manages our custom woodworking business. We manufacture and sell custom kitchens, baths, mantles, etc., nationwide. We are extremely blessed with good health, family and friends, and are very thankful for all that God has provided. Phill and I, our children and their spouses, are all born-again Christians. continued on page 3

M A P L E L E A F AWA R D S Peg Bourke C’48, and Mary Anne Kevil A’58, received the Maple Leaf Awards at the 100th anniversary Alumnae Weekend. The Maple Leaf Awards recognize alumnae/associate alumnae “who personify the values of their MSJ education in contributions to their local fiath communities, civic communities, and/or Mount Saint Joseph.” In her nomination of Peg Bourke, Sister Mary Eileen Howard stated: “Peg’s life has been one of teaching, tutoring, and travel.” She also attested to Peg’s love for and loyalty to the Mount as evidenced through her involvement in Ursuline ministries when she comes to visit, and through her generous donations to the Sisters’ Retirement Fund. Mary Anne Kevil’s nominator, Sister Annalita Sister Mary Eileen with Peg Bourke in Yosemite Lancaster, recounted how National Park. Mary Anne’s life is a witness in a world fixated on power and possessions. Mary Anne has kept alive Angela’s spirit of welcome and belief in the dignity and worth of each individual person, according to Sister Annalita. In her service of teaching, nursing, practicing law, and returning to teaching again, Mary Anne has been passionate in loving and serving others.

MEMORIES OF LONG AGO On June 23, Sister Martha Ann Cargile (left) welcomed Wilma Bischof Snyder, who was a 7th- and 8th-grade student at the Mount, 1935-37. Sister Martha Ann — a very young sister at that time — was assigned to help with the grade-school girls. Wilma, who had not been back to the Mount since she left, asked her daughter, Charlotte Martinez, to bring her to the Mount. Originally from Louisville, Wilma now lives in Indianapolis. Wilma enjoyed lunch at the Mount and a tour of the former Academy buildings. She described the 6-7-8 classroom as a one-room building located about where the flagpole is now. She remembers that there were about 35 girls in these classes.

Some have sought the mission fields of China and other locations, but the rest of us lean on the stirring of the Holy Spirit in teaching about Jesus closer to home (like me!). I thank you for the opportunity to share a part of my life with you. Karen O’Daniel Gerstle A’69 I work as a nurse in a local long term care facility and take care of aging in-laws and parents and my two beautiful granddaughters in my free time. Pat “Woody” Wooldridge A’70 In a nutshell, after graduation from MSJ, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps. I did two tours of active duty. After the military, I took a job with South Central Bell in Owensboro but transferred to Louisiana in 1982. In 1987, I was offered a job with Sprint and moved to SW Florida. Currently, I am a supervisor, field operations, for the Golden Gate exchange in Naples, Florida. I wish all members of the class of 1970 the very best.
