T
he 2016 Christmas season brought new meaning to AAA – Associates Active in Advent. Associate groups shared their preparation time awaiting the birth of Christ, gathering together or being of service to others, in the true spirit of Christmas. On Dec. 3, Western Kentucky Associates and Sisters came to Saint Joseph Villa at the Mount to throw a party for the sisters. It was the fourth year for the “inreach” to the Ursuline Sisters, and it was the biggest one yet, with 60 people present. The Western Kentucky Associates were joined by longtime central Kentucky friends Associate Phyllis Troutman and Sister Mary Lois Speaks. The group celebrated the feast of Saint Nicholas with treats for the sisters and festive head wear. And once again they got Santa Claus to show up. The following day, Dec. 4, Ursuline Associates and Sisters in Owensboro gathered on a rainy Sunday afternoon for their annual Advent Prayer Service, this time held at St. Pius X Church. Scripture readings, songs and the lighting of the Advent wreath were followed by a reflection from Associate Martha Little called “Simeon’s Prayer: Watching and Waiting,” by Christian author Max Lucado. Those present were then asked to reflect and share how Christ has brought “light” into their life, and where they had seen the face of Jesus during Advent.
One of the longest held Ursuline Advent gatherings is in Kansas, where the Ursuline Associates celebrate an Advent Day of Reflection. The tradition continued on Dec. 10 at Curé of Ars Catholic School in Leawood, Kan. The three Kansas City area Associate groups – Belles of Saint Rita, Saint Francis of Paola and Our Lady of Brescia – shared the responsibility for the day. Janice Arth, from the Our Lady of Brescia group, led discussion on “Our Advent Message.” Mark your calendars! Each table was Saturday, June 17, 2017 asked to discuss “Do you think of “Finding God in Everyday Life” God having tender, Associates & Sisters Day heartfelt mercy for Presenter: Father Ben Brown

Associate Update
Thoughts from Marian...
Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, With dissension and contention so prevalent these days, my heart turns in self-defense to parts of my life that have a chance to remain peaceful. Pushing aside the urge to jump back into bed and burrow under the blankets, my being an Ursuline Associate propels me to seek ways of peace and mercy. Although the Year of Mercy is officially over, remnants remain of that time of seeking a merciful life, floating in and out of my view like fallen leaves on a shimmering pond. Many visitors exclaim about how peaceful it is here at Mount Saint Joseph. Oh my, how true that is – and how desperately all of us need peace! I’ve realized now that mercy and peace go hand in hand – one leads to the other in an endless circle. I was privileged to attend a gathering of one of our associate groups recently. I noticed a pattern emerging as the introductions went around the room. Several of us described ourselves as “coming full circle,” or that our lives were “going around in circles.” One member noted how the simple act of greeting a stranger with a smile or a “good morning” can make that person part of her world. The circles of our small worlds can widen into circles of mercy and peace. As the holy season of Lent approaches, let’s continue to seek and share a peaceful life. Let’s pursue peace, embrace peace, proclaim peace.

ASSOCIATE MISSION STATEMENT
e, the associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus through the actions of our everyday lives. We commit ourselves to living the charism of Saint Angela Merici in union with and in support of the Ursuline community of Mount Saint Joseph.

Try on peace every morning to see how it fits, just for that day, and let it empower you to bring mercy to your world. May you be richly blessed with mercy and peace,
MARIAN BENNETT, OSUA
Coordinator of Ursuline Partnerships Dear Associates, It is hard to believe that the Christmas season is already past and we are looking toward Lent. Each day passes with its blessings as we continue on our journey to God. This journey is one of self-awareness and searching. During this time we have much to consider as we listen and watch what is happening in our world. How do we treat our neighbor? How do we treat the stranger among us? How do we treat the people we live and work with? How do we practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy? The year of mercy may be over but the need to live a life of mercy is with us every day of every year. Pope Francis tells us we cannot be Christian without practicing the Beatitudes. We know this from our scriptures and from all we have been taught over the years. It is so important for each of us to reflect on our lives of service and care of those who need our help and concern. During the next few months, let us pray especially hard for our country and ask God to open the minds and hearts of all in authority to goodness and truth. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. God bless each of you and those you love.

Welcome to our new Associate! MARY KAY HOWA of Westwood, Kan., attended meetings as a guest of the Our Lady of Brescia group for several years and is now pleased to be an “official” member. She retired after 40 years as a registered nurse and has been widowed since 2000. She enjoys living three blocks from St. Agnes Catholic Church, where she’s been a member for over 32 years. She is involved with Catholic Hospice & Stephen Ministry and enjoys playing a lot of bridge with Associate Irene Quigley. Kay’s relationship with the Ursuline Sisters runs deep. Her aunt was Mother Charles McGrath, former superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Paola, and she attended Catholic grade school, high school and college. In former years, she cooked for a food kitchen and was a member of a group of actors who put on an annual performance of song and dance. Always cordial and welcoming with a strong prayer life, Kay knows that becoming an associate will help her to grow spiritually. Her contact companion is Sister Angela Fitzpatrick.
A workshop to turn plastic bags into sleeping mats for the homeless took place on Nov. 12, 2016, at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. Associate Brenda Semar (center, hand raised) instructed Ursuline Sisters, Academy alumnae and Young Daughters of Saint Angela (YDOSA) from Whitesville, Ky.
Kay Howa, second from left, made her commitment as an Ursuline Associate on Dec. 10, 2016, at the Kansas Associates and Sisters Advent Day of Reflection at Curé of Ars Catholic School, Leawood, Kan. Lisa Guenther, third from the left, who made her initial commitment in 2014 when the process was in two steps, received her lifetime associate pin. They are pictured here with their contact companions, Sister Angela Fitzpatrick, left, and Sister Jane Falke, right. BELOW: Sister Jane pins Lisa and Sister Angela hugs Kay.
At the Kansas Advent service, Associate Carol O’Keefe, left, gives Associate Pam Knudson a gift of items connected to the late Sister Mary Rudina (Rita) Klarer, who was Pam’s inspiration to become an associate. Pam is moving to Georgia. Carol also discussed a plan for the three Kansas associate groups to share their formation time together. She is stepping back from her work with YDOSA to devote more time to these groups.

Sister Monica, who began as director of vocation ministry in 2016, began her blog, “Vineyard of Hope,” on Jan. 3, with a focus on hope. As she explained in her first blog, she came across an icon of Saint Angela holding grapes, symbolic of her vineyard as well as of the group of women she brought together. “Vineyard represents the bond of all the women who have chosen to live in community as Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph,” she said. “Hope is the attitude with which we approach each tomorrow on our journey toward heaven.” Sister Monica hopes to shine some light on what it means to be an Ursuline Sister, as she talks with young women about whether religious life may be for them. Sister Stephany began her blog, “Sticky Notes,” on Jan. 6. Now halfway through her first year as a novice, she will share with readers the unique viewpoint of someone new to religious life. What is a family?

In the footsteps of Christ By Judy Sims, OSUA
Associate Betty Girten and I have become travel buddies. In 2014 we went to Italy and had such a good time. For years I had wanted to visit the Holy Land, and when I asked her to go with me she was so excited. Some family members and friends voiced concerns over our safety. But we did some research and spoke with others who had made the trip and decided to go for it. We booked our tour in June 2016 and departed for Israel on Nov. 12. November is supposed to be quite cool and rainy, but we had beautiful sunny days in the 70s the entire time. Among the many places we visited were the Jordan River, where John baptized Jesus; the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on water and calmed the storm. Then we stopped at Kibbutz Nof Ginosar nearby. The museum there features the remains of a wooden boat like the one Jesus used. It is 2,000 years old and was discovered in 1986. On to the city of Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle, turning the water into wine. We saw containers used to store wine. They were not the ones used at the wedding feast, but they were 2,000 years old. Betty bought a bottle of Wedding Wine. They told us it was the same kind of wine served at the feast. Not sure if that is true, but we enjoyed it anyway. Next stop was the Via Dolorosa walk. This is the route Jesus
Hello Associates, Family is a strong word, with many different meanings. What does the word “family” mean for you? For me, it’s that feeling of knowing that someone is always there for me no matter what. We share our lives together, putting our faith in God, staying strong through good times and bad and supporting each other selflessly. Ursuline Sister Judith Nell Riney says, “Family is where you learn to live and love, give and take, and develop relationships that sustain you through life. My family has always taught me about the gift of life.” Ursuline Associate Kris Mango believes that “Family is the building block of our world; it is the sacrificial love that unites us – whether by birth, adoption or spirit – and enables us to live in the creative love of God.” It’s easy to see that our friends are a family, not in the traditional sense, but playing very similar roles. We give to each other and we receive from each other, all in the name of God; it is a wonderful support system. It’s important to remember that we do depend on each other. The Ursuline supporters cherish and appreciate all the wisdom and knowledge that the Ursuline Sisters have instilled in us. On the other hand, the sisters depend on us to help care for them, to be there to support them in whatever ways we can. We all have our duties and responsibilities like those of your own family. Thank you for playing such an amazing role in our family community. We should all be proud of what we are a part of! God Bless.

followed to Golgotha, the site of the crucifixion. It was heart wrenching to imagine Jesus at this time. We also saw big stones that were actually at the foot of the cross. Other sites visited were the Western Wall and the Garden of Gethsemane where Judas betrayed our lord. Amazingly there are 2,000-year-old olive trees still there. We saw the caves of Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered and swam in the Dead Sea. One of our last sites to see was the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. This is located in the occupied territory of Palestine. Our Jewish tour guide was not allowed to cross the border. At this point we acquired a Palestinian guide. There were many more places we visited which I simply can’t include in this short article. A friend of mine told me before I left for Israel that once I witnessed all these places I would read the Bible with an entirely new perspective. He was so right. It truly was the trip of a lifetime!

In Loving Memory... SISTER MARY RAYMOND DIECKMAN, 84, died Oct. 27, 2016, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 66th year of religious life. She was a native of Kansas City, Kan. Sister Raymond was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., prior to the merger of that community with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. She was nicknamed “Mighty Mouse” for her small stature but huge impact on all those to whom she ministered. She was a teacher and principal at schools in Kansas and Oklahoma, and served 22 years in leadership, including eight years as superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Paola (1974-82). She was the contact sister for Associates Lillian Cloughley, Patricia Wernel, Rita and Jim Wilkus and Doris and Jim Wilson. Survivors include her sister, Betty DuPont of Paola, Kan., nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Oct. 31 at Mount Saint Joseph. Gifts in memory of Sister Raymond may take the form of donations to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356. MADELEINE MARY HICKS BIANCO, 93, died Nov. 6, 2016, in Bardstown, Ky. The former Sister Mary Jane Hicks (1939-1967), she was a lifelong educator who made learning fun, with an ever-present smile and a great sense of humor. She was described as a model of the Ursuline tradition of excellent teaching and love for her students, whose love for God radiated through everything she did. Madeleine was married to Peter Bianco for 30 years. After his death, she volunteered at a local hospital in Arizona, and relied on her strong faith to get her through hard times. She became an Ursuline Associate in June 2002 with her contact companion, the late Sister Margaret Joseph Aull. FERN KELLY, 98, one of the first Paola Associates, died Dec. 17, 2016. Edward L. Kelly, her husband of 36 years, preceded her in death in 1978. She retired as a supervisory clerk in the regional office of the Bureau of the Census and liked to travel and play bridge (one of her frequent partners was Sister Marcella Schrant). She is survived by her four children, Mike Kelly, Pat Robinson, Rita Zeller and Father Ken Kelly. Fern was an outgoing and positive woman who loved life, no matter what it brought. Her goal as an associate was “to develop spiritual growth and to share hospitality and support each other in the joys and sorrows of life.”
