ASSOCIATE MISSION STATEMENT
W
e, the associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus through the actions of our everyday lives. We commit ourselves to living the charism of Saint Angela Merici in union with and in support of the Ursuline community of Mount Saint Joseph.
May 2017
A Note from Marian... Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, Associates and Sisters Day is just around the corner. It’s time to think again about our associate commitments. When we stood before the assembled sisters and associates to sign our commitments, we did not “join a group.” We did not become part of “a program.” We’d studied Saint Angela’s writings, we’d learned the history of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, we’d worked to discern our call to commitment. On that day, we chose a way of life, linking our lives with our associate and sister companions in spiritual communion with each other. We promised to support each other and to share the core values lived by Saint Angela Merici and the Ursuline Sisters. We may have begun the journey as individual associates, but it is our commitment to God and each other that enables us to be companions on our journey. The needs of today’s world are SO great that we must come together. Let us continue this journey with songs of joy. As Carey Landry wrote, “We are companions on the journey, breaking bread and sharing life; and in the love we bear is the hope we share for we believe in the love of our God.” Sincerely, – Marian Bennett, OSUA

and English literature; a master’s degree in theology and church history, and a master’s in spirituality; and a doctoral degree in counseling. To accommodate a scheduling conflict, Associates and Sisters Day will be in the Mount Gymnasium this year. The morning will be devoted to Father Brown’s talk, then about a half dozen new associates are expected to make their commitment at a 1:15 p.m. ceremony in the Motherhouse Chapel. The always popular panel discussion returns after the commitment ceremony, with four participants asked to share an everyday experience that helped them know that God is active in their life. Some interesting facts about the sisters and videos will round out the afternoon. Mass will be celebrated in the Motherhouse Chapel at 4 p.m. n Registration is now open for the 2017-2019 Spiritual Direction Training Program at Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. RENEWING OUR ASSOCIATE COMMITMENT On June 17, Ursuline Associates will make commitments at 1:15 p.m. CT in the Motherhouse Chapel. We invite you to renew your own associate commitment by praying with them: Young Daughers of Saint Angela in Whitesville, Ky., put together Giving Tree presents for a girl and a boy in December 2016. Their other activities that month were a Christmas party at the YMCA and singing Christmas carols for the Ursuline Sisters at Saint Joseph Villa, Maple Mount.
Coloring mandalas and listening to meditative music were on the agenda at the Feb. 28 Owensboro Associates meeting at St. Stephen’s Media Center.
Associate Jacinta Garinger was crowned queen at the Valentines Ball on Feb. 14 at the Carmel Home in Owensboro. Residents also voted for a king (Bill O’Bryan).
On April 8, Marian Bennett (second from left) attended the Tri-State Conference of Associate Leadership workshop in Cincinnati with Emily Mosby, Theresa Butler and Genevieve Churchill, associates of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. The workshop, “Moving Toward a Flourishing Community,” was led by Jeanne Connolly of the Wheaton Franciscans of St. Charles, Ill.
Kansas Young Daughters of Saint Angela Delaney Hile, Amelia Guenther, Olivia Vohs, Cindy Reilly and Advisor Lisa Guenther discussed the strength and bravery of Saint Ursula and enjoyed Valentine treats at a February meeting.
Loving God, I renew my commitment TODAY as an associate of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. I promise to proclaim the gospel of Jesus through the actions of my everyday life. While continuing to live the vocation to which You have called me, I will embrace their charism and share in their mission, ministries, goals, ideals and challenges. I will pray for the Ursuline Sisters and Associates of Mount Saint Joseph and work to link my life with theirs in meaningful ways. I promise to grow in awareness of and commitment to the core values of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. …to foster a lived communion with God through daily prayer and a spirit of selfless service, generosity and hospitality, … to seek the reality of true peace and dignity for all peoples in all circumstances, … and to recognize and reverence the presence of Christ in each person I encounter. I make this promise for Your glory in the spirit of Saint Angela Merici, our founder and inspiration. AMEN.
An Associate Prayer Associate Mary Teder was one of the Quilting Friends at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center from Feb. 26-March 1. She was working on a bright yellow Texas Lone Star quilt for her sister, Sister Amelia Stenger.
Loving God, let Saint Angela never cease commending us to your kindness. By always imitating her charity and prudence, may we come to a deeper understanding of the mission of Jesus. May we always reflect his presence in our lives. AMEN.

Dear Associates, Winter has come to an end and the promise of spring is all around us. It is a time of anticipation of flowers, fresh vegetables and warm spring days. A few showers along the way will give life to the grass, and the birds will start their new families. Spring is a time for Easter celebrations and Alleluias. As I write this, I can look out the window and see the day lilies and irises trying to bring their buds up from the earth for us to see. This newness and resurrection of the things of earth are reminders of the Resurrection of Jesus and the new life that comes to all of us through His gift of His life. During the days ahead, let us keep this hope and newness alive as we pray for peace in our world. Let us ask Jesus to come again into the hearts of those who make decisions that touch other people’s lives. Let us open our hearts to the stranger and help others when we can. Let us pray for a renewal of faith so that all will know of the goodness of God. Let us seek help for all people by trying to end racism, by taking care of the earth and by seeking human rights for all people. If each one of us does something, we will begin to change this world one little piece at a time. God bless all of you. We hope to see you for the Associates and Sisters Day in June.

Sowing Seeds of Faith...
As Lent ends and the Easter season begins, a newfound hope fills the air. Just as Christ is resurrected from the dead, spring brings new life. We see buds on the trees and smell the blossoming flowers. Sometimes it seems as if spring happens overnight, and we might not think about all the preparation and God’s miracles that must happen for spring to arrive. Last fall I shared with you how the sisters have impacted my life and the importance of sowing seeds of faith. As a symbol of a mustard seed growing into a huge plant, trees are being planted on April 29 in Owensboro to honor your support of the sisters. Like the preparations and miracles that bring spring to blossom, the sisters witnessed faith in your giving! Those wonderful trees will grow much like the sisters’ missions, and it’s because of YOU. I know that I tell you that often, but I cannot stress it enough. The sisters are so grateful for your support and generosity. As you smell the wonderful spring air, stop for a moment and reflect on the work that goes into all those small seeds blossoming around you. Your continuous support helps the sisters’ missions bloom into beautiful things just like all the new life growing around you. Thank you for helping us bloom and grow!

Carrie survived cancer, counts her blessings By John Little, OSUA, Owensboro, Ky.
Carrie Wieder learned about the Ursuline Sisters very early in life. “Our mother and three of her sisters boarded at Mount Saint Joseph while they were in 7th and 8th grades,” Carrie said. “We always loved hearing stories about their experiences at the Mount.” It was not until many years later that Carrie learned about the Ursuline Associate program. She received an invitation from Sister Suzanne Sims to become an associate. Sister Suzanne led the training for Carrie and she became an associate in 2014. The Wieder family has faced serious health issues, including a cancer scare for Carrie. During this time, she found comfort in their association with the Ursulines. Carrie related the story of a prayer service for her and her sister who was also battling cancer. “Sister Suzanne brought a relic of Paul Volk (the
priest who asked for the Ursuline Sisters to come to what is now Maple Mount). We were surrounded by sisters, associates and family. What a wonderful feeling. I believe that was the turning point for me.” Carrie said that during her battle with cancer, the prayer requests sent out daily from the associate office Carrie were a great comfort. “Due to all of the prayers and support I am now in remission,” she said. “God has truly blessed me.” “My being a part of the associates has provided so many benefits,” Carrie said. “We have come to know Saint Angela on a deeper level. Just about every aspect of my life (prayer, personal and social) has become richer the last several years due to this relationship. I am very blessed.”

Are you dynamic like Christ? By Sister Marietta Wethington
F
ather Richard Rohr, OFM, says that God is much more a dynamic verb than a static noun. God is constant flow.
Since our baptism, God’s life has been flowing in us, creating a yearning, moving us toward love and union. Love is also a dynamic verb, not at all static. God’s love is expressed in the form of Jesus who took on our human flesh. There is nothing static about Jesus. The gospels are full of stories of Jesus moving among the people teaching, healing, forgiving and giving them new life. Jesus shows us the constant flow of God. In Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans we hear that we were baptized into the death of Christ and united with him in resurrection. We are the expression of the love of God today. We are the dynamic verbs. We are Jesus alive during this Easter season. The Holy Spirit empowers us to be the dynamic flow of God. How are we the dynamic verbs? How do we express the constant flow of God? I believe we do that by imitating the actions of Jesus. These are some of the ways we express the flow of God. Listening attentively to someone who needs to talk. Preparing a meal for a family whose parents are harried and overworked. Visiting a lonely person in a nursing home who does not have anyone to visit him or her. Welcoming immigrants and refugees into your neighborhood. (Remember Jesus was an immigrant.) Forgiving someone who has hurt us. Letting go of the grudge we have been carrying for years. Caring for the earth, our common home. Planting flowers to increase the beauty around you. (We all need beauty in our life.) Taking a walk and praising God for the beauty of the earth.

Visiting someone who recently lost a family member. Writing a handwritten note to someone to show that you care. Spending quiet time in prayer each day. Reading scripture daily. These are some of my ideas. I’m sure you have many of your own to add.
Reflection: During this Easter season, how will
I show an appreciation for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus? How will I allow God’s dynamic love to flow through me?
Volunteers needed for Maryland to Kentucky and Beyond Conference The 2017 Maryland to Kentucky and Beyond Genealogy Conference is June 22-25 at Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky. The conference has been held every three years since 1990. It is an opportunity for descendants of the Maryland to Kentucky pioneers to meet and share family history beginning in 1785, when Maryland families formed a Catholic League of Families and pledged to migrate to Kentucky. The 2014 event in Springfield, Ky., hosted 465 participants from 26 states. Associate Ed Cecil and Sister George Mary Hagan – both natives of Nelson County, Ky., where the Maryland settlers began arriving in 1785 – are members of the group. Any Ursuline Associate who can help will be appreciated. Volunteer duties include staffing the Help and Registration Desks; proctoring for classes (announcing speakers and distributing handouts); door monitoring for classes, and handing out and collecting surveys. Anyone willing to volunteer should contact Associate Ed Cecil at 270-485-6983.
’ If, according to times and circumstances, the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice.

Ursuline Sisters lose a beloved friend in Bishop John McRaith The Ursuline Sisters lost a beloved friend and one of their earliest Ursuline Associates with the passing of the Most Rev. John J. McRaith, bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky. “He was a common man at heart,” Sister Amelia Stenger, congregational leader, told the Owensboro MessengerInquirer on March 19. “He was humble. He was a servant. And he walked in the footsteps of Jesus.” Sister Amelia worked on Bishop McRaith’s staff as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Owensboro from 1984-91. She was at McRaith’s bedside until shortly before his death. “He was a good man, a great priest and a strong leader,” she said. “He loved to be with people. He believed in the goodness of everyone.” Bishop McRaith was a strong supporter of the Ursuline Sisters. When Continued on page 7

In Loving Memory... SISTER JANE IRVIN HANCOCK, 89, died March 8 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 69th year of religious life. She was a native of Waverly, Ky. Caring for others was Sister Jane Irvin’s specialty. First it was the elementary students she taught. From 1975-83, she was dean of boarding students at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, where she acted as a second mother to many girls. From 1983-89, she served as facility organizer at Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center, caring for the guests. She also ministered in the Archdiocese of Louisville, where she cared for retired priests. She retired to the Motherhouse in 2003. Survivors included two sisters, Sister Jane Miriam Hancock (since deceased - see obit on this page), and Margaret Louise Coshan, Ontario, Canada, and nieces and nephews. SISTER PHILOMENA COX, 91, died March 9 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 72nd year of religious life. She was a native of Owensboro, Ky. “Sister Phil” loved a challenge and was handy with tools like her patron, Saint Joseph the Worker. A teacher or principal for 29 years in Kentucky, she was happy to roll up her sleeves and work as director of building services at Brescia College/University from 1976-91. After leaving Brescia, she ministered at the Motherhouse, first as a business office secretary (1991-2000), then as local community treasurer from 2000 until her retirement in 2008. She was the contact sister for Associate Mary Ann Schilling. Survivors include a brother-in-law, Louis Taylor, and a niece, Mary Lou Nolan. SISTER ROSALIN THIENEMAN, 96, died March 29 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 68th year of religious life. A native of Shively, Ky., she was a teacher for many years in Kentucky, including at Mount Saint Joseph Academy (1956-57). Sister Rosalin served in a variety of roles at Brescia College in Owensboro from 1961-88, including assistant registrar, dean of admissions and director of financial aid. Today’s Brescia University students receiving financial aid owe a debt of gratitude to Sister Rosalin’s pioneering efforts. She also served as a parish minister, and held many volunteer positions at Mount Saint Joseph, including information receptionist and in the finance office. Survivors include her sister, Marita Eckhart, of Louisville, and nieces and nephews. NOTE: Memorial gifts for a sister may take the form of donations to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.

Mount Saint Joseph Academy closed in May 1983 and reopened that August as Mount Saint Joseph Retreat Center, The Bishop’s Ride at MSJ Picnic McRaith’s staff retreat was its first customer. In a 2008 interview marking the 25th anniversary of the Center, the bishop said the peaceful surroundings at Maple Mount made a perfect setting for a diocesan retreat center. “To set aside time to turn off the noise of the world and spend some time with God in a special way is so important,” he said. “God’s creation is so magnificent, and such places are more conducive to the beauty and grace of others. The Mount is a beautiful example of God’s handiwork.” He had a great love for the land and nature. Bishop McRaith became an Ursuline Associate in 1985, just two years after the program began. He was a fixture at the annual Mount Saint Joseph Picnic for many years, offering wagon rides around the grounds to children and his many friends. On March 24, following his funeral at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro, he was laid to rest in the Mount Saint Joseph Cemetery.
