Associates and Sisters Day moves to August 8 By Dan Heckel, OSUA (MSJ Staff)
T
o give everyone a better chance of gathering safely, Associates and Sisters Day is being moved to Aug. 8 at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. That Saturday was already reserved for our annual Associate Retreat, so instead we will bring everyone together to listen to Ursuline Sister of Louisville Martha Buser discuss “Charism Isn’t Taught – It’s Caught.” Once you’ve caught the Ursuline charism, where will it lead you? The new date is contingent upon our ability to gather free from concerns about Covid-19. We will likely have livestreaming available of the day for those who still feel uncomfortable with getting together with a large crowd. A final decision on whether to continue with Associates and Sisters Day will be made in early July. We asked our Ursuline Associates how they were staying positive and helping others during these unusual times. Here are some of their responses: Pam Knudson, Kansas City, Mo.: “We are trying to stay positive and not have cabin fever in our home; we don’t want to end up like ‘The Shining’ characters. A lot of people are sitting on their front porches on sunny, warm days enjoying waving at each other and yelling ‘hello’ to each other. The neighborhood has a teddy bear walk ... where we walk around the neighborhood looking to see who has a teddy bear waving or just sitting in the windows. On some walks we flip a coin at the end of the block to see if we turn left or right or go straight.
Registration is now open for Associates and Sisters Day on Aug. 8, 2020. Fill out and mail the registration form on the back page or sign up online with the web link provided.

This makes the evening walk more interesting. Teachers are parading through neighborhoods honking their horns so that schoolchildren know that their teachers are thinking of them. I’m cooking at home a lot more, but sometimes we will order a meal via the telephone and pick it up at the restaurant where a server will bring it to our car. We feel like this is supporting our local small businesses and we always tip the server.” Ed Cecil, Owensboro, Ky.: “I am trying to stay positive by talking to my wife, Gloria, three or four times a day by phone at the Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. I am trying to keep her positive and keep her spirits up.” Gloria Cecil is also a dedicated associate. Carol Hill, Leitchfield, Ky.: “I start my day with prayer, then make necessary phone calls and texts to check on several people. I’m keeping the rest of the day my normal routine. ... Thank God for all blessings and keep us safe from this deadly virus.” Christa Bennett, St. Joseph, Ky., and director of Human Resources for the Ursuline Sisters: “I’m finding little ways to make home time more enjoyable, like walking the dogs on my lunch break. From the Associate Office... In a Time for Needed Prayer
Dear Associate Sisters and Brothers, Our foundress Angela Merici grew up during a time of war and the plague but managed to keep her faith and belief that God would protect her. During this time, let’s come together in prayer to renew our faith that God will help us through this pandemic of Covid-19. As we are drawing closer to our 2020 Associates and Sisters Day, we have decided to reschedule this event for Aug. 8, 2020, provided we are able to come together safely. We pray that it will still include our guest speaker Ursuline Sister Martha Buser, OSU, of Louisville, Ky. This was a very difficult but most important decision for us to make as this pandemic grows bigger in the world. Everyone’s safety is our main concern. I want to let you know that I am praying for you all at this time and I will keep you up to date as we come closer to the August Associates and Sisters Day. In the meantime, please keep yourself safe and remember We Will Get Through This.

She then decided to send “cheer” cards to some of the Ursuline Sisters who needed some cheering up. The Ursuline Sisters want their Ursuline Associates to know that they are praying for them and ask for your prayers in return. Along with the prayers of Saint Angela, we will get through this together.n

Dear Associates, Holy Week and Easter bring us together to celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It is a time of quiet and a time of remembering. During the past weeks we have all had time to contemplate the sacred mysteries of the life of Jesus as we are staying in our homes because of the Covid-19 virus. Sometimes God stops everything, so we have time to really remember the important people and things in our lives. Maybe this is God’s way of helping us realize who and what are the most important parts of our lives. The question we might ask ourselves is – now that I have had the time to think about all of this, how am I going to be changed? How am I going to live my life differently? How am I going to be kinder to my family and friends? Do I really need all the things that I have? What is important to me? The best thing that can come out of this awful pandemic is a renewal of people’s commitment to be disciples of Jesus by sharing what we have, by being good neighbors, by giving of ourselves to help others and living as true followers of Jesus. During these weeks of Easter and on to Pentecost, let’s prepare ourselves for the coming of the Holy Spirit so we can truly be the people chosen to spread the gospel by the way we live. God Bless all of you.

Isabel Crenshaw: A friend for a lifetime By Sister Martha Keller, OSU
In 1980 I was sent on my first teaching experience to a small Catholic school in Hawesville, Ky., Immaculate Conception. It was a year of many firsts for me. It was my first experience of having my own classroom of 35 students, a classroom packed with 3rd and 4th graders. My first year of planning lessons, correcting papers, creating bulletin boards and giving tests. It was my first experience of stepping out as an Ursuline Sister into the field of education. Part of that year of many firsts was being gifted with coming to know one of my co-workers, who shared the title of secretary for the school. Sister Martha Keller when she was teaching at She was known by all as Isabel. Immaculate Conception My relationship with Isabel Crenshaw in Hawesville, Ky. grew into a genuine friendship very quickly. Isabel was single and had time to hang with the “Sisters at I.C.” I was thrilled to have her accompany me and the other sisters to a ballgame or drive across the toll bridge for a pizza or movie. Life with Isabel was filled with stories and lots of fun and laughter. She was a tremendous storyteller and story maker! I soon realized that she was a person one could confide in. I will pray for the Ursuline Sisters and Associates of Mount Saint Joseph and work to link my life with theirs in meaningful ways. I promise to grow in awareness of and commitment to the core values of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. …to foster a lived communion with God through daily prayer and a spirit of selfless service, generosity and hospitality, …to seek the reality of true peace and dignity for all peoples in all circumstances, …and to recognize and reverence the presence of Christ in each person I encounter. I make this promise for Your glory in the spirit of Saint Angela Merici, our founder and inspiration. AMEN.
An Associate Prayer Loving God, let Saint Angela never cease commending us to your kindness. By always imitating her charity and prudence, may we come to a deeper understanding of the mission of Jesus. May we always reflect his presence in our lives. AMEN.

Carol O’Keefe climbing a spiritual ladder By Renee Schultz, OSUA
Saint Angela saw women as significant agents of change. Carol O’Keefe is a force of nature and a natural-born leader. She relates most to the risktaker in Saint Angela. She has taken many great leaps of faith to follow where the Spirit leads her. From an early age, Carol bravely followed God’s call. With very little religion at home, at age 12 she began walking herself to the church down the road from her house. At 16 she began dating her future husband, Steve. Through him she was introduced to some of the people and places that would later become her greatest loves: the Catholic Church and the Ursuline Sisters in Wea, Kansas. She ended up working in the rectory at Queen of the Holy Rosary in Wea in 1998. She became very close with Sister Marie William Blyth. They had many faith talks and Carol remembers explaining to Sister her feelings. “To me it was like slowly climbing a ladder one rung at a time,” Carol said. “You get your feet comfortable on a step and you just want to stay there for a while. But in time you begin to feel a little uncomfortable. You know you can’t stay in one place forever. In order to grow you need to move now and then. You start praying that you will make the right decision as to when to move and whether to go up or down. Then suddenly you feel the eagerness to take that next step. You have come to know that feeling is God answering your prayers and it is your free will to decide: up or down.” In October 1998, Sister Marie William invited Carol to a weekend retreat at the Ursuline Motherhouse in Paola. Carol said, “I had been searching for ways to enhance my spiritual life for some time and with the intercession of Saint Angela, God’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect.” She became an Ursuline Associate in 1999. In 2003, she agreed to serve as co-coordinator
of the Paola Associates with Sister Marie William. After Sister Marie William moved to the Motherhouse in Kentucky in 2009 (she died in 2019), Carol continued to serve as coordinator for the Kansas City Ursuline Associates. Carol wanted to share the Carol O’Keefe support and empowerment toured the Holy she had received with young Land in 2017. women. She had a dream and calling to begin the Young Daughters of Saint Angela in Kansas. She and fellow Associate Lisa Reilly worked together to develop a program that had a huge impact on the young women she served. After losing her husband in 2011, Carol was guided by the Spirit to serve through Stephen Ministries, which trains people to give one-onone Christ-centered care to those who are hurting. Hearing her husband’s name in this ministry gives her the little nudge she needs to take her pain and give to others. The day Carol interviewed for this article she was out picking up and delivering masks to help during the Covid-19 outbreak. She is always ready to respond to the needs of the day. “By our very claim as members of the Ursuline family, we all risk being agents of change within the church and society,” Carol said. “As we continue to be faithful to the charism of our founder, Saint Angela Merici, let us remember to listen and to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we continue to serve this broken and fragile world.” There is a line in a poem by Paola Ursuline Sister M. Charles McGrath that says, “You are the women who have spiritualized adventure.” This is the best way to describe Carol O’Keefe, a woman who has spiritualized adventure.

Easter joy continues!
By Sister Marietta Wethington, OSU
As I am writing this, we, in our Catholic tradition, are still celebrating Easter. Every morning as our chaplain opens Mass, he wishes us a happy Easter. Easter, a feast much too great to be celebrated in one day. It takes a whole week. Actually, it takes 50 days. Easter. New life of the Risen Jesus. Our campus here at Mount Saint Joseph reflects that new life. All around us Japonica near All Saints Avenue at we see trees blooming – the redbuds, the pink and white dogwoods, the japonica Mount Saint Joseph. Photo taken by Sister Marietta. bush. Even the ground is covered with a variety of lovely violets. And what about us? How do we as individuals reflect new life? We let go of our burdens and fears. We reflect joy, peace and grace. We keep our eyes on the Resurrection. It is not something that happened over 2,000 years ago. It continues to happen every day. May God give us the grace to see.
“ Do something differently. . . ” “If according to times and circumstances, the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice.” –Saint Angela Merici The words of Saint Angela are as relevant today as they were 500 years ago. We have experienced something none of us have experienced before. We have had to get out of our routines, our comfort zones and do something differently. I’m a firm believer that out of a bad situation there is good that comes. We may have discovered we have the courage to learn a new way to communicate through technology, or those human connections we have taken for granted are more important than ever before. We may have discovered a new way to serve others. For us, we are preparing for rescheduling events and discovering new ways to do our work. We want you to know how much we value our Ursuline Associates and appreciate what you do. We need each other. As we get through this situation, we continue to listen to Saint Angela’s words: “For this way, without doubt, Jesus Christ will be in your midst, and as a true and good master, he will enlighten and teach you what you have to do.”

She spent lots of time seeking God’s direction for her own life in prayer and this overflowed into her conversations and presence with all whom she encountered throughout the day. She took both her needs and those of others to God in daily prayer. She was a joyful person and everyone who was with her had a good time. Isabel went to heaven on March 16, 2020 (see obit on opposite page). She lived her life for her family, her brother and sisters, and all her beloved nieces and nephews. She was a person who taught me that family extends beyond the members who reside under the same roof. Everybody was treated like family by Isabel. She came to know my family and asked about them by name. She was well known by so many people and loved sharing her favorite beverage – a cold beer – and a University of Kentucky basketball game with passionate UK fans. Having many teachers who were Ursuline Sisters in the school over the 16 years she served as secretary, Isabel came to love and appreciate our mission. It is not surprising that Isabel was one of the first to become an Ursuline Associate and loved
