VOLUME X, NUMBER 1

A DAY OF JOY, SHARING, COMMITMENT, AND LOVE by Suzanne Gochenouer, OSUA

“Let us build a house where love can dwell….” More than 150 sisters and associates sang these words at the beginning of the Mass that closed a day of shared love and respect on July 9, 2005. Earlier that day smiles and hugs were exchanged between welcoming sisters and associates arriving from near and far. Sister Shellie Intravia had journeyed from Chillán, Chile, for Ursuline Community Days and this day of thoughtful contemplation. The group was nearly evenly divided between sisters and associates, with 72 sisters and 77 associates signing in upon their early morning arrival. Following a warm welcome by Sister Marietta Wethington, the group settled into the Mother Aloysius Room of Saint Joseph Villa, eager to receive inspiration from the day’s speakers. Sister Michele Morek set the tone for the day as she shared with the group the new vision of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. Through the year 2010 they intend to “Make Love Visible,” as the sisters and their associates walk in the way of

Angela. To share and remember this, we each carried away a laminated bookmark with this vision statement on the front and, on the reverse side, a prayer for guidance in living this love. Voices rose in song as we sang the vision through the lyrics and music of Sr. Maureen Griner, OSU, Judy Gray, OSUA, and Barbara Goldsmith, OSUA. Sister Margaret Ann Hagan, OSU, of Louisville, shared with us Saint Angela’s love for the Eucharist, which during Angela’s lifetime was a yearned-for blessing not received every day. However, Angela exhorted her followers to “see” an entire Mass each day. Sister Margaret Ann described how Mass was said in 16th century Italy, and explained that to actually see the Mass with your own eyes would take effort and determination. We were invited to discuss how we receive the Eucharist in sharing with each other the ritual of the Mass. Angela called for a spiritual virginity, which the continued on page 5

day’s participants agreed is centered on the Eucharist, and defined by the utter love and attention we focus on in our participation in that devotion. We were amused to hear that Angela decreed that her followers should not spend all their time in church, but should take their prayers home where they could pray as long and as much as they felt called to do. We understood that she wanted us to live our prayer rather than pose in our prayer. We broke bread together at a delicious lunch in the sisters’ dining room decorated in summer colors, and enjoyed a break in which many of us wandered through the grounds of the Mount under clear blue skies. We returned to a presentation by Sr. Rita Klarer, OSU, on the Eucharist in a moving experience of music, word and movement. Sr. Rita’s gentle, love-filled voice surrounded us as she led us on a journey from the creation of the world to the creation of the Eucharist through the sacrifice of God’s Son, and His sharing of the bread and wine as embodiments of Himself and God’s love for us. And God said “Ah, that’s good,” as Sr. Rita brought to a close our discussions on how we all receive the Eucharist in becoming bread to one another. The day came to a beautiful end with the Mass shared in the communion of spirit and music. During Mass, 19 associates made temporary commitments and 5 associates made lifetime commitments. The Ursuline community, in return, expressed their commitment and welcome to the associates. As we departed, we called for the love of God to fall gently on all the associates and sisters, all the earth and all creation, as we sang “Rain down, rain down, rain down your love, God of life.” Suzanne Gochenouer made her lifetime commitment as an Ursuline Associate on July 9, 2005.

REPOR T FR OM JJAMAICA AMAICA REPORT FROM Associate Mary Danhauer, who began her ministry in Jamaica in early June, recently sent a report on her activities. “I started seeing patients the day after arriving and haven’t stopped since!” she writes. She is working in the Diocese of Mandeville, an area of extreme poverty, with Dr. Carol Narkevic, who has ministered in Jamaica for some time. Each day of the week they visit a different clinic or nursing home in the 1282-square-mile diocese. A recent donation from the Ursuline Community helped to purchase medications costing approximately $1640. It is still not enough. “We’ve had to cut down on what we give and write a prescription for the rest if the people can afford it,” she says. Mary expresses her gratitude to the Ursulines. “Do know that you’re here with and in and through what I do...for you have helped to make me who I am.” Mary’s e-mail address is danhauermp@msn.com. Donations to the Jamaica ministry may be made through the Catholic Pastoral Center in Owensboro. Make checks payable to the Owensboro Diocese and designate “for Jamaica.”

THE MOUNT PICNIC — SEPTEMBER 11, 2005! September 11 is the date for the annual Picnic for the Retired Sisters. It’s just a few weeks away. This is the 35th Mount picnic — preparations are well underway. Over the years, we have been very privileged to have so many of you to give of your time and talents. This is a large event, and your help is again needed. Even though the picnic is on Sunday, much work goes on during the last week. Something new this year is the setup of tents for the booths/stands on the Tuesday prior to the picnic. Help will be needed! Contact the Mount for exact times. As always on Monday and Tuesday, utensils, dishes, pots and pans will be cleaned. Some food will be prepared. Help is needed then. On Saturday morning, there is more food preparation. Come on out — this is a fun time. Early Sunday, booths and stands are set up and stocked. Sunday is the big day — when everyone’s help is needed. This year again we will have over 40 booths/stands — For many years, Associate Jeanne Lamastus (left) has each will need your help. Many of you are our “faithful regulars,” volunteered the week before the picnic to sort and price and as always we are very appreciative of your past efforts. hundreds (thousands?) of items for the Yard Sale booth. We invite family, friends, alumnae and associates to come out Last year her sister, Sue King, came to help. and spend a hour or two helping with this year’s picnic. Your presence is most important in making this event a success. Besides, it’s a lot of fun, and a chance to meet with old friends. If you have a hour or two to spend, send us a note at mksull3@peoplepc.com, or call 270-442-8535. So, circle your calendars for September 11. thanks! We’ll find a place for you. On behalf of our elderly and infirm Sisters…….thanks! Pat and Mike Sullivan, OSUAs
