From our Congregational Leader Dear Friends, As I prepared this letter, I realized that my deadline was “election day.” As I prepared to cast my vote, I reflected on the whole notion of politics; at that time I found myself in agreement with those for whom the concept of politics often stirs negative feelings and responses. After all, politicians as a group appear to be held in low esteem; if a process appears to be convoluted or cloaked in secrecy or shadowy deals, we frequently label it “too political.” But I challenged myself to think again. While one of Webster’s synonyms for “politic” is “shrewd,” “political” actually simply means “of or relating to government;” and “govern” implies “a smooth course for the good of the individual and the whole.” Certainly these latter interpretations pose a more hopeful image. In Laudato Si, Pope Francis reminds us that “a healthy politics is sorely needed, capable of reforming and coordinating institutions, promoting best practices and overcoming undue pressure and bureaucratic inertia ... (181).” He also regretted that “... recent World Summits on the environment have not lived up to expectations because, due to lack of political will, they were unable to reach truly meaningful and effective global agreements on the environment (166).” In this issue of Ursulines Alive you will discover the scope and content of the United Nations’ document, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. You will also explore the many ways the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph already support many of these goals through their ministries and mission. As you examine those efforts and reflect on the ways you yourself might be supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, I urge you to remember that, while individual and community efforts can and do make specific differences, we are each challenged to look wider and understand how political elements must be engaged and directed. In the words of Pope Francis, “... for all this (environmental reform, sustainable development goals, new global rapprochement), there is urgent need of a true world political authority ... (75).” We are still called to lives of prayer and service, but we are also challenged to recognize that we must frame our prayer and service in the realities of the needs of the world in which we live – just as Saint Angela did as she ministered in Brescia to all those who sought her counsel – spiritual and political. Blessings for all our prayerful political endeavors. In Angela, Sister Sharon Sullivan, OSU Cover: Top: Sister Carol Shively is the superintendent of Catholic Schools in Shreveport, La. Ursuline Sisters already work to achieve global goals to help the poor

He said, ‘You are here to love us.’”
2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Bread for the World, a collective Christian organization that measures hunger with data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, reported in September 2015 that one in seven households in the United States were “food insecure” in 2014, meaning that they were unsure at some point how they would provide their next meal. Bread for the World ranked states by hunger and poverty. Among some of the states where the Ursuline Sisters minister, Kentucky is the fourth hungriest state and fifth poorest; Louisiana is the third hungriest and third poorest; and Tennessee is the 11th hungriest and seventh poorest. Through her role with UNANIMA, Sister Michele has given several talks on the global realities of food and water. Some staggering facts include that one-third of all food produced is wasted every year, and that in developed countries, the waste is due to human behavior. “If we could eliminate this waste there would be enough for the whole world,” Sister Michele said. “All of us can act locally on this – asking the grocer to package the produce in smaller units so it won’t be wasted, or to 4
sell it in bulk, or we can be content with the fruit with spots. We can take the so-called ‘expiration date’ with a grain of salt.” The sisters at the Motherhouse are partnering with Owensboro Community and Technical College and Brescia University by leasing farmland for a sustainable agriculture course at OCTC. Community college students learn vegetable gardening and raising livestock while supporting the Ursuline mission of being good stewards of the land.
3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Sister Jacinta Powers is a nurse at the Church Health Center in Memphis, which has a goal to bring healing to the whole person – body, mind and spirit, she said. “Not only do we offer medical care to Sister Jacinta Powers checks our patients, but we also the blood pressure of Orlean have a health facility Murry, of Memphis, Tenn., where people can begin at the Church Health Center an exercise routine,” in 2010. she said. “Other aspects of the facility include healthy cooking classes, smoking cessation meetings and education on chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. The population being served through the CHC is receiving quality care through their primary care provider, whereas previously they only had the choice of the emergency department in the local hospitals. “My satisfaction comes from knowing that our patients leave us with a better understanding that we are their partners in health … instructing and empowering them to have the keys to a healthier lifestyle,” Sister Jacinta said. “Our clients want to be involved in the choices for the health of themselves and their families. They are not sitting back saying ‘oh poor me,’ but instead are eager to learn ways to maintain health and a healthy lifestyle. Our clients are people just like everyone else. Just because their circumstances in life may be a bit different, they are not a drain on society. Often they are the backbone of society.” Sister Larraine Lauter is also ministering to ensure healthy lives with Water with Blessings, the organization headquartered in Louisville that raises money for filters and training so that people in impoverished nations can have clean drinking water.
4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Sister Carol Shively is superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Shreveport, La., in which 12.7 percent of the student population receives one of three types of scholarship grants due to economic need. Sister Carol Shively, “The toughest factor Superintendent of Catholic I have heard teachers Schools for the Diocese of express is not that Shreveport, La., gives a children are any different medal to a student at St. John Berchmans Catholic School. in desires or dreams, but that those who have had an inferior academic foundation struggle greatly to catch up,” Sister Carol said. “They also mention the lack of higher level thinking skills and creativity … but not for long. Once these students have a shot of confidence instilled in them they blossom as any child does within our Catholic Schools.” Sister Carol bristles at the opinion that some people still don’t relate poverty to a lack of quality education. “We live in a capitalistic society, the only way possible is through education,” she said. “An educated person is able to maneuver the roadblocks in the system. They have the skills to find the information they need. The Bible tells us … that the poor will always be with us. However, I believe that in a country as great as ours we can lessen the socioeconomic injustices that currently plague our society, and it’s through quality Catholic education.” The Shreveport Catholic Schools seek to serve the whole child, Sister Carol said. “We provide the formation of life, how to communicate with others, how to articulate their thoughts, building self-worth,” she said. “We tell whoever brings these children to school – parents, guardians, grandparents – that we partner with the whole family. It’s more than teaching religion. It’s a full-service education.” Sister Monica Seaton teaches at St. Patrick Catholic Elementary, a Jubilee school in Memphis. After a long history of educating children in downtown Memphis, the school closed as more Catholics moved to the suburbs. In 2003, thanks to an anonymous donor, St. Patrick reopened with a goal to bring Catholic education to inner-city children whose families would otherwise lack the resources to provide it.
5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Sister Mimi Ballard is serving in her 18th year as director of Casa Ursulina, in Chillán, Chile, where women learn skills that enable them to produce items they can sell. “Selling their products enables them to supplement a meager income in order to support their family,” Sister

Mimi said. “Many of our women earn money through cleaning houses, serving or working in the kitchen at catered events. The work is sporadic, and the pay often below minimum wage. Often their husbands don’t have steady work, doing odd jobs for minimum wage or below. “At Casa Ursulina we are creating a space and atmosphere in which women feel supported and are inspired to help each other. No one is in it alone,” Sister Mimi said. “If they/we support and help each other, everyone is going to do better. Many women don’t come specifically for economic reasons, but because they are very alone in their lives – depressed, sick. They need support and they are supported by coming and receiving from other women – but also by offering what they know to other women. In a very individualistic world, it seems that solidarity blossoms when people come together and are encouraged to live in community.” “Perhaps this example shows how this ministry mirrors the mission of Saint Angela: Casa Ursulina now has a volunteer group of women who go out to visit bedfast people and to help their caretakers, perhaps by giving them a day off. Our women have become very aware of the women in the area, especially the very sick and elderly,” Sister Mimi said. Supporting and empowering women has long been a staple of the Ursuline Sisters. The sisters continue to minister in the Contemporary Woman Program at Brescia University in Owensboro, which was created to help women develop their full potential. They support Impact 100 Owensboro, a coalition of women that joins together to raise money to issue grants for Sister Mimi Ballard, worthy causes. 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Aside from the work Sister Michele does concerning clean water policies with UNANIMA, Sisters Sharon Sullivan, Ann Patrice Cecil and Eva Boone at the Motherhouse are trained water testers with Kentucky’s Watershed Watch, a program supported by the Kentucky Division of Water. Volunteers collect water samples from creeks and submit them for testing to make sure there aren’t harmful chemicals polluting the streams. The ministries described here are just some of the ways these goals are being pursued by the Ursuline Sisters. Many sisters serve the poor in numerous ways outside their official ministries. n 5

Sister Catherine said being at the Mount has been an opportunity for growth. “Just living with a larger number of people, you need to be open to their needs, to how other people feel,” she said. “I personally Former Belleville Sister Marilyn feel very much at home Mueth, left, and Sister Ruth Gehres here.” She is joined at the Mount by Sisters Dorothy Helbling, Mary Elizabeth Krampe and Mary Patrick Monaghan. Sister Marilyn Mueth continues to live in Millstadt, Ill., where she left her education ministry in 2014 to care for her elderly mother. She said the merger was beneficial for the older sisters who needed more medical attention. “Their physical care has been provided in an environment of spiritual respect,” Sister Marilyn said. “Their contentment has been a great relief to me since this was a guideline given to us by (Saint) Angela. “For the rest of us, their provided care has freed us to be in ministry for a longer period of time,” Sister Marilyn said. “All of the Belleville Sisters have benefited from the more diverse ideas, sharing and friendships provided by a larger number of community members. It has helped us grow and be able to be a part of a greater service to the Church and the world as a whole.” Sister Evelyn Latham lives the farthest away, serving in her 10th year as a drug and alcohol counselor in Anoka, Minn. “I can’t say it was easy for me. We were a small ‘family like’ community going to what seemed to me a huge new world,” Sister Evelyn said. “As I met the sisters they were all so open and greeting. I love the Eucharist, the morning and evening prayers, hearing the sisters pray and sing together.” Being so far away makes it more of a challenge to be integrated in the community, Sister Evelyn said, but she feels supported in her ministry. “I do feel part of my new community. I am still learning,” she said. “The Maple Mount Ursulines have had a long tradition and I’ll keep learning and offering the gifts I have to the betterment of my ‘new’ community.” To ease the merger transition, Sister Nancy Murphy

moved from Maple Mount to Belleville in 2005 to serve as local coordinator, giving her a unique perspective on the sisters. “I always was inspired by their commitment to prayer and their love of Scripture classes – gifts still held dear to them,” Sister Nancy said. “Their inclusivity and hospitality to the marginalized and less fortunate were gifts that I admired. I see all these as some of their outward gifts still being shared with our community.” Sister Michele Morek spearheaded the merger effort in her role as congregational leader of the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph. “When I look back on my time of leadership, one of my favorite parts was the merger process – working with each sister and getting to know her – this unique person who would change us forever,” she said. “I hoped that together we could be better than either of us were separately, that we could complement and enliven each other. I hoped for happiness for each new sister in her new home. When I look at our sisters – who just happen to be from Belleville, as I Sister Martina Rockers, left, with former happen to be Belleville Sister Mary Ellen Backes, seated, from Aztec, and Sister Mary Angela Matthews N.M. – I wonder how we did without them?” Now 13 years since her Maple Mount retreat with the late Sister Frances, Sister Mary Ellen calls the merger “a rebirth of opportunity to listen and respond to God’s voice in all of life. The same God that drew my heart when I left home for the Ursuline community in Belleville calls me to serve God’s people as an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph,” she said. “The difference is that the signs of these times are different and require a different and fresh response.” n
Couple receive Sister Darlene Make a Difference Award Each September, the board of Shively Area Ministries in Louisville, Ky., selects a recipient of the Sister Darlene Make a Difference Award to honor the late Ursuline Sister Darlene Denton and the work she did for 10 years with the ministry serving the poor. Sister Darlene, who died Sept. 5, 2011, “took risks, made things happen and was instrumental to help the ministry move to the next level,” according to this year’s award presentation.
The 2015 award was given to Bill and Deanne Whitman. Roxanna Trivett, executive director of Shively Area Ministries, described the Whitmans as “a couple who have not only been generous faithful partners in ministry for many years, but also took risks by co-signing the loan when we bought the present location of the ministry. They also were among the first who gave us an interest-free loan to build the food pantry addition.” 7

From the Director... Learn the steps for the prayer method of Lectio Divina W i n t e r
Dear Friends of the Center, As the Catholic Church moves toward the season of Advent, I will introduce you to the prayer method of Lectio Divina. This is a way to pray with the Advent Scripture readings. Advent is a great time to take a day away from all the craziness of shopping, partying or all the things we get into at this Sister Ann time of year. Call the Center to make an appointment for some quiet time. I will be happy to assist you if you would like to learn more about this method of prayer. This is a prayer form that is used by many people, but I always think of Benedictine spirituality when I think of this prayer. I was first introduced to it by a Benedictine Sister. It is a simple form of prayer with lots of silence as part of the prayer. There are four or five steps to this prayer depending on who is leading it. 1.) The first step is Lectio: Read. Choose a Scripture passage. You can really use any passage, the Gospel reading from the day, the Gospel reading from Sunday, or any Scripture reading you choose. Spend some time reading this over, read it more than once, read it aloud. As you read, listen “with the ear of your heart.” What word in that reading “stirs your heart” and invites you to pause to allow that word to take root in your life? Spend some time with that word. What is God saying to you through that word? Ask God…
2 0 1 5
2.) The second step is Meditatio: Prayerful Pondering. Ponder that word that “stirs your heart.” What does it mean to you? What memories surround that word for you? If images form in your mind, spend some time with those images. What is God saying to you through those images? Give God time to work through those images. 3.) Step three is Oratio: Speaking to God. Talk to God about the Scripture reading, the word that “stirred your heart,” the images that spoke to you of God’s work in your life. 4.) Step four is Contemplatio: God speaks to you. Sit in silence and allow God to speak to you in that silence. What would you like God to say to you? Do God’s words to you invite you to make changes in your life? 5.) Step five is Operatio: Prophetic witnessing. As your time of prayer comes to a close, how are you going to take this Word of God out into your world? Will you meet others with a smile today? Will you share your faith with someone today? Will you be willing to answer a God question for someone today? May these days be filled with God’s love and care for you. May you be willing to share God’s love and care with others. God bless you, Sister Ann McGrew Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center

Yarn Spinners find shear enjoyment at the Center

o slightly alter a famous line from “Field of Dreams,” Debbie Webb can prove that, “If you shear it, they will come.” In August 2007, Webb traveled to the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center from her home in Grayson County, Ky., with wool that was sheared from the sheep and llamas on her farm. It was part of an Arts at the Mount program called “Sheep to Shawl,” teaching participants how to spin and weave yarn that was freshly sheared. A one-time workshop wasn’t enough for the participants, and they soon started meeting as a group at the Retreat Center on Saturdays to spin yarn and create beautiful craft pieces. The Yarn Spinners were born. “Initially we would do four Saturdays a year,” Webb said. “Then I asked if we could come on a Friday night. Then everyone wanted a retreat weekend,” she said. “Then they wanted two retreat weekends. Then the group decided we wanted all weekends, although people can still come for just Saturdays.” Retreat weekends average 20 to 25 people, although not everyone stays the night, Webb said. “We have tables set up for projects,” she said. “Sometimes there are classes being taught, but it’s not real structured. You bring your own projects to work on and learn from the other people. Some people are knitting, some are crocheting and usually someone has a loom. Rug hooking is big now,” Webb said. “It’s a fibercentered group. Everyone is perfectly willing to share with anyone.” The Yarn Spinners always stress that beginners are welcome, Webb said. “I tell them to bring what you are working on, or an interest in the fiber arts,” Webb said. “There are people who can help you. Come be ready to visit with people who share your interests.” The Dec. 4-6 weekend features a silent auction. “We bring our stuff and put it up for sale, and all the proceeds are donated to the sisters who live in (Saint Joseph Villa),” Webb said. “We’ve done that for four years and have raised more than $4,000. Everyone enjoys doing it. Most of them are not Catholics, but everyone so enjoys the Mount. The way we’re treated by Kathy (McCarty) and Sister Ann (McGrew). It’s so comfortable. It’s a really good place for us to be.” The participants love coming to the Mount, Webb said. One participant is Judy Mason, of Henderson, Ky.
Several attended a Working with Acid Dyes workshop and made dyed silk scarves in 2014. “The people and everything we do keeps me coming back,” Mason said. “We have broadened our horizons in so many directions since I began. When I started I knitted and was a beginning spinner. Now we’ve gotten into dying wool, weaving and rug hooking.” Mason has been coming for about six years, and is unhappy if she has to miss a Yarn Spinning weekend. “It’s a joy to go there. It’s just a bunch of like-minded women who love doing anything fiber related,” Mason said. “You can come and do whatever you do, and be supported by your friends. And we do a great thing for the sisters.” Mason is not Catholic and said she wasn’t very spiritual before joining the Yarn Spinners. “I’m still not Catholic, but I do go to church and consider myself a faithful Christian woman,” Mason said. “Part of that is the influence of Debbie and other Catholic women in the group, and how strong their faith is.” The Retreat Center is a perfect place for the Yarn Spinners to gather, Webb said. “The price is really reasonable, it’s a very good environment,” Webb said. “The conference rooms are perfect. They bring in the rocking chairs for us and we spread out all over the place. The food is good. Anything we need, they try to get it for us. People really care about you, they want to take care of you. It’s part of the welcoming spirituality.” There are five Yarn Spinning weekends scheduled in 2016: Jan. 8-10, March 4-6, June 3-5, Aug. 26-28 and Nov. 4-6. The cost depends on how many nights and meals are included. Those interested can contact Kathy McCarty at kathy.mccarty@maplemount.org or (270) 229-0206. Webb continues to have ready access to fresh wool at her home. “I have nine sheep, an angora goat, a llama and an alpaca as my fiber animals,” she said. “We call them the Spinners Flock.” n 2016 Yarn Spinners Weekends: Jan. 8-10, March 4-6, June 3-5, Aug. 26-28, Nov. 4-6. Not Really Retired...
Sister Joseph Angela “in the know” as daily annalist By Dan Heckel, Mount Saint Joseph Staff Sister Joseph Angela As chancellor of the Diocese Boone stands in front of Owensboro, Ky., from 1989of the daily annals of 2011, Sister Joseph Angela the Ursuline Sisters Boone was recognized as being that are kept in the the best source for just about community archives. anything anyone wanted to Annals are available know. back to the early 20th century, before 1912 Even though she is now when the Ursuline retired at the Motherhouse in Sisters of Mount Maple Mount, she still gets calls Saint Joseph became from the diocesan staff, most of an independent which begin with, “Where do I community. go to find out … ?” “I miss that role,” she said. “You could go home at 5 o’clock and the rest of the day was different.” There’s no end of shift for sisters at the Motherhouse … and as Sister Joseph Angela has learned, no retirement either. Since moving to the Mount from Owensboro in June 2014, Sister Joseph Angela – known as “J.A.” to her friends – has served as the daily annalist. It’s her job to document significant events that happen each day at the Mount, a role that has persisted since the early 1900s, even before the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph became an independent community. “When we have visitors on campus, I write down who they are and where they are from,” to add to the annals, Sister Joseph Angela said. After she’d been doing the job for a while, she received a call from Huong Tran, who was part of a Vietnamese family who was sponsored by the Mount from 1975-85. “She, her husband and her 13-year-old son came from California to visit,” Sister Joseph Angela said. They wanted to see where Huong worked while going to school. Sister Joseph Angela had previously turned in pictures she had of the family from the 1970s to the community archives. After the family’s visit, she went to the archives to see what information was available on the family, and found all that was present were her pictures. “I went to the annals from 1975 and there was one
sentence on the Vietnamese family arriving. I wish the annalist had written more down,” she said. That was her first visit to the annals. “When I was in the archives, I saw all these notebooks lined up from the 1900s,” she said. “I find the history of the community fascinating.” Sister Joseph Angela is a native of New Haven, Ky., and was taught by Ursuline Sisters in grade school and high school. Among her large family were two siblings who were Ursulines, Sisters Aloise and Mary Regina, now deceased. This is her 68th year as an Ursuline. She may be most known among the public for her many years serving the diocese, and among her religious community for the 19 years (1970-89) that she spent as treasurer and business administrator for the Ursuline Sisters. But she said one of her favorite ministries was the eight years she taught math at Brescia College, now University (1963-70.) “I had been teaching seventh and eighth graders, but I had finished my master’s degree at Catholic University of America,” to qualify her as a college math professor, she said. “In my first class at Brescia, the students didn’t seem the least bit interested in what I was saying. I had backto-back classes, and after the second class, the registrar said, ‘What are you doing to these kids? They all want to withdraw immediately.’” That’s when she decided to proceed more slowly. Among her many honors, Sister Joseph Angela is a Distinguished Alumna of Brescia University. In 2014, a new lodge at Gasper River Catholic Youth Camp and Retreat Center was named “Boone Lodge” in her honor, recognizing her as a co-founder of this camp near Bowling Green, Ky. Those who want to write to Sister Joseph Angela can do so at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.
In the joy of eternal life Sister Mary Rita Lavigne, 93, died Sept. 17, 2015, in Owensboro, in her 62nd year of religious life. A native of Topeka, Kan., she enjoyed playing the piano by ear. Sister Rita was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., prior to that community’s 2008 merger with the Ursulines of Mount Saint Joseph. She was a teacher in Kansas, using her acumen for business to help her students. From 1969-87, Sister Rita was business administrator for the Lakemary Center in Paola, which serves adults and children with developmental disabilities. Sister Rita moved to Maple Mount on June 1, 2009, and served in the community archives until her death. Survivors include a brother, Harry Lavigne of Des Moines, Iowa, nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community. The funeral Mass was Sept. 21, with burial in the convent cemetery. Donations in memory of Sister Rita can be made to the Ursuline Sisters, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356. 11

Soli Deo Gloria:
We rejoice in the gifts of our sisters, given for the kingdom of God
The Archivists of Congregations of Women Religious (ACWR), which commemorates its 25th anniversary this year, recognized Sister Emma Cecilia Busam as a founding member during its Triennial Meeting Aug. 29 in Pittsburgh. Sister Emma Cecilia founded the modern archive for the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Sister Emma Cecilia Saint Joseph in 1983, following Busam working in a 38-year career as a teacher archives at the Diocese and principal. In 1991, she also of Owensboro in 2009 became the archivist for the Diocese of Owensboro, Ky., creating its first archive as well. She continued in the dual role until 2001, when she devoted her full attention to the diocesan archives. In 1983 she began her affiliation with the Society of American Archivists. It was during an SAA meeting that the idea of forming an archives association for women religious began. Sister Emma Cecilia became one of five founding members of ACWR when it was established in 1990. She served as president of the group from 1995-98. Sister Emma Cecilia continues to volunteer with other sisters in the Mount archives. Sister Larraine Lauter was honored by her alma mater, Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky., with the university’s top honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award, during a ceremony Sept. 19. Sister Larraine graduated from Brescia in 1987 with a double major in fine arts and education. She serves as Sister Larraine accepts her Distinguished Alumni executive director of Water award from Brescia With Blessings, a nonprofit University President organization that trains Father Larry Hostetter. mothers in 30 impoverished countries to know how to filter drinking water for their small communities. Sister Larraine became the seventh Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph to receive the prestigious award, joining Sisters Vivian Bowles, Ruth Gehres, Michele Morek, Joseph Angela Boone, Rose Marita O’Bryan and Dianna Ortiz. “My studies at Brescia prepared me for whatever door God would open next. I learned the values and skills of persistent creativity, the critical perspective of others, historical context, a basic working knowledge of a wide variety of subjects ...

and most importantly, a solid spiritual foundation for all,” Sister Larraine said in her acceptance speech. Sister Annalita Lancaster, who died Dec. 9, 2014, was honored on Aug. 29 by her former students in the small central Kentucky town of Clementsville. Here Sister Sister Annalita’s pine Annalita served as teacher, grove in Clementsville, Ky. principal and organist from 1958-65 at St. Bernard High School. During those years, Kentucky increased its course requirements for a high school diploma, so St. Bernard suddenly needed more classes and more books. As principal, Sister Annalita knew that what the students really needed were marketable skills, such as typing and bookkeeping, but the equipment was expensive. To overcome this obstacle, she worked with the National Forestry Service to plant 500 pine trees, earning a dollar for each tree planted. The money from the trees, together with the proceeds from a few pigs and bales of hay, provided St. Bernard with its new courses and technology. And the baby pine forest still flourishes today. Her former students never forgot how her ingenuity helped further their careers. On Aug. 29, a plaque was unveiled on the former school building (now the parish hall). It reads: “We, the former students of St. Bernard School, honor Sr. Annalita Lancaster, OSU (1958-1965). To whom we owe our greatest achievements in life as a result of her teaching. She was the mastermind behind the planting of the beautiful pine forest on the hill above our school. She instilled in us faith in God and ourselves. Fondly remembered, with deep gratitude.” Sister Pam Mueller, director of campus ministry at Brescia University since 2005, has been nationally certified by the Catholic Campus Ministry Association in the name of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Subcommittee on Certification for Ecclesial Ministry Sister Pam and Service. Prerequisites included an advanced degree beyond a bachelor’s; 18 graduate credit hours in theology, religious studies or pastoral ministry from an accredited college or university; ecclesial endorsement from her congregational leader; documentation of professional competency from supervised practicum, and from three people at Brescia; a self-reflection paper and an interview by three certified campus ministers. The process was finalized in October.

Dear Donors and Friends, Each year at this time we remember the wonderful people who have supported our mission during the past year. Each year we marvel at the tremendous blessings we receive from so many of you. You share your time with us at the picnic, donate gifts for the sisters in the Villa, and support our ministry with your monetary gifts. We could not do what we do without your help. The main story in this issue talks about the United Nations Sustainable Goals for the next 15 years. It gives you information about these goals. It tells you some of the places where we work and how we are trying to fulfill our mission. Many of our sisters work in areas where poverty and hunger are still prevalent. We believe our mission of education and Christian formation fits perfectly with these goals. It is through education that people become more able to take care of themselves and their families and it is through Christian formation that they learn about their Creator. When Pope Francis was here in the United States in
September, he showed us many ways to recognize the worth and goodness of all of our brothers and sisters. As we begin the Year of Mercy on Dec. 8, we want to continue to be doers of the call of Jesus to serve the poor and continue to empower women and men to become the best they can be. I am not going to repeat all the information about the places we serve. I am simply going to say thank you for helping us as we continue to work in these places of need. Your generosity has helped us in so many ways over the years. We pray for you every day and ask God to bless you and those you love. We hope you have a blessed Advent and Christmas season.
