Thermal Water Water is a source of life, and thermal waters are a gift of nature, enjoyed and used for very diverse purposes. They are especially valued because our modern life style makes stress a common ailment and relaxing becomes indispensable. It is also important for people who wish to ensure their physical well being through rejuvenation and beauty treatments, and for those who want to have fun; they find in the thermal springs a wonderful option in a natural environment.

Thermal Region In the northwest of Uruguay and 400 km from Montevideo, the capital of the country, there is a large area with a varied thermal spring offer, located in the departments of Salto and PaysandĂş. Thermal water springs from one of the most important water resources of the planet: the GuaranĂ Aquifer System, which stretches along an area of the subsoil of the territories of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. They were discovered in 1946, at a time of oil prospecting in the area. Instead of the black gold, extremely hot water emerged.

Quality of Life There are different ways of enjoying the thermal springs and their mineralized waters, extremely pure and crystal clear. Swimming pools of all sizes, shapes and water temperature, either indoors or outdoors, provide a sensation of total relaxation. Massage showers, invigorating jets and bubble baths are a temptation for resting and well-being and for leaving stress behind.

Aquatic Parks The water of the thermal springs is also a source of fun. Two aquatic parks use these waters to amuse old and young alike in rides where water takes the leading role. High water slides (both straight and with bends), tunnels, bridges, giant cascades, swimming pools with artificial waves, are some of the attractions offered by both thermal water parks. One is the first one built in South America, and the other is the biggest thermal water park.

Thermal Spas Beauty treatments are provided, using the properties of thermal waters, both for facial and body care, as well as to aid weight loss and to combat stress. The Spas have first class infrastructure and professional teams and there is also the possibility of enjoying these waters in the privacy of your own rooms in a Jacuzzi.

13
Thermal Gastronomy A generous land for delicacies, where fresh water fish are mixed with citric aromas and the perfumes of the blueberry plantations. The Chajรก, a delightful dessert, is a traditional treat of this area, as well as the Tannat, a wine variety recognized and awarded all over world. Exquisite cheeses that are made using thermal water contribute a distinctive and exclusive flavor.

Thermal Springs all year round Whether sunny or cloudy, in winter or in summer, the thermal springs receive visitors year round. The night is magic there, with well lit indoor and outdoor swimming pools, which can be enjoyed during long hours even under a cloak of stars. And despite the high temperatures that characterize these waters, the thermal springs have become a preferred summer destination, with the use of modern and original cooling mechanisms that make them enjoyable even if the weather is hot.
16
17
Surroundings In contact and communication with nature, the thermal springs are surrounded with softly undulating natural prairies furrowed by the water of rivers and creeks. The scenery is wonderful, and to get to some Thermal Centers it is necessary to drive off the route through roads that lead towards dream-like places. For people who look for an even more direct contact with nature, and with the traditions of rural life, there are tourist ranches where it is possible to participate of daily country activities such as milking, rodeos and shearing.
18
19
Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism A visit to the thermal springs can also be an excuse to enjoy another type of tourism. Incredible scenery, clean air and tranquility provide the perfect setting for activities like photographic safaris and bird watching. There are also options for the adventurous such as trekking, rafting, and 4 x 4 road trips with different levels of intricacy. And this region provides the best fishing of the whole Parana River Basin, with the possibility to catch Dorado fish that average 15 to 20 kilos during all seasons.

Historical and Cultural Heritage The first missionary settlements of the XVIIIth century, the Plateau of Artigas, and the mythical Villa de Purificación (Purification Village), are examples of a tradition that lives on in the circuits of historical and cultural tourism and highlights the rich architectural heritage of the country. Purificación was in 1815 the site of the first national government and capital of the Free Nations (Pueblos Libres, an Independence period denomination for the River Plate Basin provinces). Tradition is alive and well in the parties and cultural events that reminisce of the country’s origins and appeal equally to both residents and visitors.
