ABOUT

With a history dating back exactly a century to 1921, baseball has long been a part of Greeneville’s narrative. That tradition will continue this year as the newly rebranded Greeneville Flyboys will continue to play in the Appalachian League, now one of the nation’s premier wooden bat collegiate summer leagues. Flyboys was chosen as the official name of the club in reference to the fact that the team’s stadium was constructed near to the location of an old airfield, as well as the strong history of patriotism in the area. The “jewel of the Appalachian League,” Pioneer Park opened in 2004 in conjunction with Tusculum College and was built just a few hundred feet from the former runway of Tusculum Field, the first airport in Greene County. Most recently an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds since 2018, Greeneville was also a longtime affiliate of the Houston Astros from 2004-17, winning Appy League titles in 2004 and 2015, and played host to two versions of the Greeneville Burley Cubs from 1921-25 and 1938-42. Among the many future Major Leaguers to play in Greeneville are current stars Jose Altuve, Lance McCullers, Jr., Carlos Correa, J.D. Martinez, and Joe Musgrove.
