ABOUT

The baseball jerseys in Johnson City will sport a new logo for the first time in over 45 years this summer as it joins the newly-reorganized Appalachian League as the Doughboys.

The nickname is in reference to a statue behind their home stadium, TVA Credit Union Ballpark, named “Spirit of the American Doughboy.” Doughboys was a nickname for American soldiers during World War I and the statue honors U.S. infantrymen who died in service to their country.

The Doughboys moniker also harkens back to the city’s baseball past as Johnson City’s original Appalachian League team was called the Soldiers from 1910-38.

Johnson City is the most recent champion of the Appy League, winning its 11th title in 2019. It had served as an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals since 1975, counting among its alumni former Cy Young winners Ron Guidry (1978) and LaMarr Hoyt (1983), 1991 National League MVP Terry Pendleton, and current big leaguers Yadier Molina, Paul DeJong, and Jordan Hicks.

Rick Magnante is set to serve as the skipper for Johnson City, returning to the Appalachian League for the first time since beginning his managerial

career with Bristol in 1987. He has managed for 16 seasons throughout his career, primarily within the Oakland A’s organization. In the dugout with him will be pitching coach Cody Stull, hitting coach Dean Green, and player development coach Cody Gabella.

COACHING STAFF

RICK MAGNANTE

MANAGER

Rick Magnante has become accustomed to the role of skipper over the years, having spent 16 seasons as a manager for various teams throughout his career. He was a part of the Oakland Athletics organization for 12 of those seasons, serving as manager of the Vancouver Canadians (2006-2010), the Vermont Lake Monsters (2011-2013), the Beloit Snappers (2014) and the Stockton Ports (20152018). He was also named manager for Vermont again in 2020 before the season was cancelled. Magnante began his managerial career in 1987 for the Appalachian League’s then-Bristol Tigers. In his first two seasons in Bristol, Magnante compiled a 66-76 overall record, with a 26-game improvement from 1987 to 1988. Since then, Magnante has coached in over 1500 games and holds a 739-783 record. In 2018, Magnante was named the California League Manager of the Year after he led the Stockton Ports to a first half division championship title and a 77-63 overall record. The Ports made it to the semifinals of the league championship that year and finished the season ranked first in pitching, second in fielding and third in batting. Before he took on the role of a coach, Magnante was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 13th round of the 1969 MLB June Amateur Draft after playing for the University of California, Santa Barbara. Following his playing career, Magnante started with the Athletics as a scout in 1996 and was credited with signing impactful players such as Barry Zito, Eric Byrnes, and Bobby Crosby. Additionally, he managed the South African national team during the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006. CODY STULL

PITCHING COACH

Cody Stull arrives in Johnson City this summer following a successful playing career. Set to serve as the pitching coach for the Doughboys, Stull brings with him six seasons of experience at all levels of the Oakland Athletics minor league system. After being selected in the 29th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, he opened his career in the Arizona League where he posted a 1.47 ERA over 14 appearances. Stull continued to build on that success and worked his way up to Triple-A Nashville just two years later. The 6-2 southpaw would go on to help lead the Double-A Midland RockHounds to back-to-back Texas League titles in 2016 and 2017. Overall, Stull pitched in 197 games, accumulating 279 strikeouts in 300.0 innings with a 3.69 ERA and 12 saves.

DEAN GREEN

HITTING COACH

Dean Green will join the Johnson City Doughboy’s as the club’s hitting coach for the 2021 campaign. An 11th round selection by the Detroit Tigers in the 2011 MLB Draft, he was a career .306 hitter with 76 home runs and 401 RBIs over six seasons of affiliated baseball, including two stints with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. Green later took his talents abroad as he spent the 2017 season with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Japan and part of the 2018 campaign with the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League. The Tulsa, Okla., product also played at the independent league level from 2018-19, suiting up for the New Jersey Jackals (Can-Am League), Sioux City Explorers (American Association) and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (Atlantic League). CODY GABELLA

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Cody Gabella returns for his second coaching stint in Johnson City as he will be the player development coach for the Doughboys this summer. He previously served as the hitting coach for the club in 2018, helping the then-St. Louis Cardinals affiliate lead the league with 75 home runs. Gabella spent five seasons as a coach in the minor league system for the Cardinals, also working with the Class-A State College Spikes and the Gulf Coast League Cardinals. He was set to join the High-A Peoria Chiefs in 2020 before the season was cancelled to the due COVID-19 pandemic. His coaching career began in 2015 with the independent Watertown Bucks. Gabella was drafted by San Diego in 2011 and played 47 games in the Padres system from 2011-12. He is the son of longtime minor league manager Jim Gabella who spent three seasons coaching Burlington, winning the Appalachian League title in 1993.
